5 out of 5 stars Beauty Slept And Angels Wept For Her Immortal Soul..........2007-01-27

Once I was introduced to Cradle via Nymphetamine and Damnation and a Day, I decided to listen to their old, original albums. The difference between these eras is great, though their new material still sounds great, if you're not a person who feels a band should have a single style and play only that style. Now, having listened to this album, it has become one of my all-time favorite albums, along with Cradle's Midian and Within Temptation's Mother Earth (if you haven't heard of them, it's because they have yet to release an album stateside).

What makes the album succeed is the incredible drumming and the guitars are amazing, especially in Funeral in Carpathia. Dani's vocals are probably at their best here, though many may find the screaming annoying, it realy takes talent to be able to do that. You probably can't do it yourself if you tried, especially at the constant rate he does. It also weaves an elaborate story of a mighty vampiric (vampyric, if you want to be technical about it) being, who in his revival following a war between Christians and Pagans, kills one who appears to go by the names "Elizabeth," "Beauty," and, in my view, "Day/Dawn," because her soul becomes Dusk beyond death. Then, Dusk and the being appear to fall in love, to the point where Dusk and the being's souls are trapped away, where the story thus ends. This is just the way I view it, as many concept albums can be interpreted in many various ways.

Breakdown, song by song:

1. Humana Inspired to Nightmare: Great instrumental, most of Cradle's are, as always. (4/5)

2. Heaven Torn Asunder: Starts slow but really kicks up and becomes a great song to start off the story, though some of the song's lyrics are not for the easily offende (i.e. "From this ransacked celestial temple, I held the prophet's severed head unto all nations")

3. Funeral in Carpathia: Great drumming, excellent vocals from both Dani and I believe Sara (I don't remember if she was with Cradle on this album) and perfect guitars really make this song everything it was meant to be and more. Personal favorite and one of Cradle's best. (5/5)

4. A Gothic Romance (Red Roses For The Devil's Wh*re): Another favorite of mine. As described in the spotlight review, it really is a great example of the combination of beauty and brutality that Cradle really tries to be. Another slow starter, it really picks up into one of my favorite songs to headbang to. (5/5)

5. Malice Through the Looking Glass: This song has a generally slow tone to it and, in a much darker and more screechy way, sounds like an older version of Nymphetamine Fix. It sounds actually very good, which leads me to feel Cradle should have a slower track like these on all future albums (Cruelty and the Beast had Bathory Aria, though that doesn't seem to be incredibly popular among fans, though I personally love the song) as they make them very well. (5/5)

6. Dusk and Her Embrace: The album's title track starts off wild and just takes of on a wild ride. A fan favorite, and a staple at concerts. (5/5)

7. The Graveyard By Moonlight: Another great instrumental. It sounds very entrancing and very eerie at the same time. (4.5/5)

8. Beauty Slept in Sodom: A bit softer sounding with very deep and somewhat confusing lyrics. (4/5)

9. Haunted Shores: A perfect closer for an excellent album. The intro is great and stays heavy and intense right until the end, with what seems to be the Vampire's last words. (5/5)

Final Word: A great album from a great artist. Newcomers to Cradle should start with this, as well as probably Nymphetamine (to understand the change in sound the band has undergone) and Midian, which is popular among many Cradle fans. If you're even more serious, I recommend the bands albums prior to this one, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh and the V Empire EP.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!.......2006-10-26

I don't know why I haven't written a review for this album before!
Dusk and her embrace is, for me, the masterpiece in COF history!
All the songs are awesome!
My fav song is Funeral in Carpathia... my god! I could listen to it again and again!! The lyrics are great, Nicholas was at his best at the drums... too bad he left for DimmuBorgir!!
Love every single songs!!!

5 out of 5 stars again not a kid but love black metal.......2006-09-30

this has to be the best of all the cradl of filth albums i being a huge fan love this album they are my favorite band and enjoy their music not because they are satanist (of course i am a satanist and 15)but because they consist of beautiful lyrics and have an incredible talent i recommend this album to anyone INVERT THE CROSS AND BURN THE CHRIST HAIL SATAN!

5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2006-05-05

This is one of the greatest symphonic BM albums of all time. With great production, and great preformace, Cradle (as usual) is able to create a dark, cold, and suffocating atmosphere. Dani's vocals are outstanding, and the musicianship is totally original and innovative. Do not expect the same ol' black metal riffage. Well worth any fan of symphonic BM's money.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome organs and drums,but.......................2006-04-17

First off i really admire the intros and outros of COF. Their instrumentals are nothing more than brilliance. The only thing I can't stand is the screaming and blasphimy, but COF are pure satanists and they let everyone know. You have to excpect evil out of these guys. This music is not fake and is to be taken seriously. I love metal, thrash, hardcore, but these guys r just too sacriligious for me. I'm a diehard metalhead and would rather listen to descent metal like Megadeth ( the new album rocks), Hypocricy, Fear Factory, even Madball. Music that's heavy, but less satanic if not satanic at all. I think Cradle for sure is headed towards hell and if there is a hell, which I believe there is, they will end up there. I don't wish this for COF, but if they don't change their ways along with the same continuous lyrics. I recommend buying for something scary at halloween, but unless you really know what COF lyrics are all about, don't even bother.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best, ever. End of story........2005-02-19

Before I review the Jap. import of this cd I will copy/paste my review I wrote last summer fomr the american version

Over the past 4 years, Cradle Of Filth have become one of my favortie bands. They are always accused of making black metal popular, being sell-outs yeah whatever. I am not here to drown on about close minded fools. So onto the album.

This is a beautiful album, I love every aspect of it. This is probably tied with cruelty and the beast as my favorite cof album. I just find the lyrics beautiful and inspiering in there own way. The music as well is just brutal at times and beautiful another/ If you are new to cof or black metal in general the vocal styles will be difficult to get used to at 1st. Now time for my thoughts on the songs themselves.

Humana inspired to nightmare - 4/5 One of my favorite cof insurmentals truly beautiful.

Heaven torn asunder - 4.5/5 A great full length song opener. Sets the mood well for this album

Funeral in Carpathia - 20/5 My favorite song off of this album and one of my favorite cof songs in general, a beautiful epic.

A gothic romance (red rose for the devils whor*) - 5/5 Probably the best example of beauty meets brutal on this album great lyrics as well.

Malice through the looking glass - 6/5 An incredlbile song, I love the orchestrated intro

Dusk and her embrace - 5/5 Title track for this album and a great song at that a real fan favorite.

The graveyard by moonlight - 4/5 Another great instrumental worth a few listens

Beauty slept in sodom - 15/5 2nd favorite song off of this album has some of cofs best lyrics.

Haunted shores - The best possible closing song for this album I love the violen intro.

So, to put an end to this review. This is a modern masterpiece in my eyes. I would not advice if you are new to cof to start with this album. My opinion is you buy maybe damnation and a day & lovecraft and witch hearts 1st. I hope you found some helpfulness in this review. Enjoy

So now onto the japanese import version........

Wow, dusk and her embrace is my favorite cd ever which is saying something that I own almost 200 cds. The American version is pure brilliance, now you add a GREAT Slayer cover another beautiful insturmental and Nocturnal Supremacy (also found on the rare UK EP V Empire) I couldn't ask for anything more. Worth every penny. I could sit here and praise this cd all day. For those that thnk Nymphetamine is the greatest cof cd apparently those mall core whiney pre teen's haven't heard this masterpiece. If you love This band (exspecially their work from 94-02) BUY THIS don't hesitate.

1 out of 5 stars This suppost be their best ? hahaha.........2004-06-28

People have told me that this is cof's best album...What a joke! What makes this any difirent from all of their other crappy god bashing satanic albums ? Can we say redone and pointless? Its all weak bullsh*t! Listining to music that makes you a lessor person and mediocre at best--is just truly sad and pathetic. Vampires ? Please! Children com'n now. Any of you who buy this and like it...Needs to have your brain checked or something siriously, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars Is Not Enough.......2002-07-02

'Dusk And Her Embrace' is already a classic album. Every song is CoF doing what they do best, which is black metal done right. Excellent. BUT, when you throw in a SLAYER cover, hide behind something big and hope that Hell itself doesn't swallow you whole. Cradle's cover of 'Hell Awaits' is a magnificient display of pure metal mastery by Dani and the boys, and is alone worth the price of the album. Adding a twist of European sophistication to pure American violence, 'Hell Awaits' becomes a lesson in brutality that only CoF can teach. If you don't already have this album, GET IT NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cradle Of Filth album.......2001-06-06

This album contains the original nine tracks plus three additional recordings. One of them being a Slayer cover called "Hell Awaits".The other two are "Carmilla's Mask" and "Nocturnal Supremacy."I am pleased with Cradle's version of "Hell Awaits."It's one of my favorite songs on this fine edition. If you're a fan of Cradle Of Filth,I highly suggest that you buy this album.
