Here is the breakdown of this kick-[...] Scorp album. If you like commercial rock, leave this CD alone as it is just a raw and powerful hard rock sampling.

1) "Make It Real" - This is classic Klaus Meine.
Rating: 5 stars

2) "Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)"
Rating: 5 stars

3) "Hold Me Tight" - This song is OK. Not an awful song but pretty plain.
Rating: 3 stars

4) "Twentieth Century Man" - A cut above "Hold Me Tight" but not much
Rating: 3.5 stars

5) "Lady Starlight" - I like this one. It is a nice ballad that really digs into your soul. Klaus Meine's vocals flow out and grab you and lets you feel the emotion. It is superb!
Rating: 5 stars

6) "Falling in Love" - This is a really nice ballad that rocks. It was very close to 5 stars. I think you will like it. I do!
Rating: 4 stars

7) "Only A Man" - This song starts out like it is going to be crap and then it picks up. This song is just average, not bad, but not great
Rating: 3 stars

8) "The Zoo" - This is the first Scorpion's song that I ever heard. Of course, it was on the radio that I heard it. I told a friend of mine about the song (He had just moved back from Germany) and he said that the Scorpions rock and he had been listening to them in Germany for years. He then turned me on to songs like "Speedys Coming", "He's a woman, She's a Man", "Backstage Queen", "Pictured Life", "In Trance", "Hell Cat", "Dark Lady", "The Sails Of Charon", "Virgin Killer", "Robot Man", and "Steamrock Fever". If you get a chance to buy these songs, do, definitely do. You won't regret it.
Rating: 5 stars

9) "Animal Magnetism" - The guitar at the beginning of this song, draws you in, for lack of a better word, like a magnet. Then Klaus extends his vocals along with the incessant drumming and before you know it, you are there, in a climatic transe!
Rating: 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars Der Missing Link!.......2006-09-01

A very interesting album from the Scorps. . .The cover was polarizing enough, stretching the boundaries of 1980's good taste with its' exotic, animalistic, sexually provocative imagery, not to mention the bizarre inner sleeve photo(for those of you who have an original LP pressing).

Although song lyrics and structure clearly suggests the Scorps are trying to ascend the same sexually charged thematic heights reached on Lovedrive, this album tends to fall short.

First of all, this is the most poorly produced Scorpions album ever. Klaus Meine at this time appears to be already experiencing some major problems with his voice (sustain, depth, resonance), and the final mix appears to have been adjusted to compensate for it with poor results. The listener gets a very washed out, mushy sounding mix, with bass and drums severely muted, guitars with no effetive punch, and tinny vocal production that seems to exacerbate Klaus Meine's condition rather than remedy it.

Secondly, a certain little brother's writing, and specifically solo work, are missing here and leave a demonstrable void when compared to "Lovedrive".

Despite these problems, the album does manage to come to its' feet and put up a good fight. Tunes such as "Don't Make No Promises your Body Can't Keep", (a rare writing credit to Matthias Jabs), "The Zoo", and "Only a Man" keep the swaggering sexuality of the Scorps solidly moving forward. Then there is my personal favorite, "Falling in Love", whose simple guitar line understates what the song is all about, LUST! Very clever writing indeed.

The Scorps toyed with themes of misogyny/objectification of women in their lyrics, and pointedly displayed them in their album artwork. Right or wrong, I think this album is the zenith of that sexual energy, and despite some obvious flaws which were later remedied in the album "Blackout", shows this band in a very interesting period of their career. Highly Recommended. 3.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great album with no airplay.......2006-07-06

Maybe the Scorps best. Falling in Love and Make it Real are worth buying the CD.

4 out of 5 stars The Scorpions enter the '80s gracefully........2006-03-04

Lovedrive (1979) was a masterpiece with lots of great guitarwork and powerful vocals. Those things are heard on the follow-up, Animal Magnetism, but somehow it's a little too ambitious and a little too underdeveloped. Every song is great but most of them sound too rushed or simply just re-writes of stuff on Lovedrive, like "Don't Make no Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)" which sounds virtually the same as "Another Piece of Meat" from Lovedrive. "Twentieth Century Man" is a social commentary track that doesn't contain any special lead guitarwork. "Lady Starlight" is a powerful ballad with string arrangements, but doesn't really flow well with what the band is better known for, and that's rockin' hard. They do that in wonderful tracks such as "Make It Real", "Only a Man", "Hold Me Tight", and of course, the menacing "The Zoo", which contains great drumwork. Overall, the album is worth a purchase but it's not able to compete with the previous album, Lovedrive, or its over-the-top follow-up, Blackout.

Wow, this is the best cd made by the Scorpions in the eighties, definitively a must-have for every Metal-fan. I really was surprised when I heard this much heavier music than what the Scorpions made before. Awsome, really, and ofcourse not every song is heavy, but seven are. The best song is Animal Magnetism en the worst is Lady Starlight, but that is jsut because I dislike ballads (mostly). Make It Real really woke me up, and the next song rocks like a hurricane!!! Well, I recommend this album highly, and after buying it: enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Welcome to the eighties.......2004-05-17

Animal Magnetism (1980.) Scorpions' seventh album.

Normally replacing band members can result in instant doom for a band. The Scorpions are one of the few bands that didn't have to face such a tragedy. Their new guitarist, Matthias Jabs, had more than proven to be a competent replacement for his predecessor, Ulrich Jon Roth. Their recent album, Lovedrive, had proven this well. And in 1980, the band released its seventh album - Animal Magnetism. Read on for my review.

Unlike the previous Lovedrive album, which experimented with a number of styles, just about every track featured on this album explores the same style - classic hard power rock. One of the band's earliest big hits, the rocker known as The Zoo, can be found on this album. This is one of the band's most popular songs to date, as well as one of their finest. A number of other excellent rockers can also be found on this album, including the excellent opening track Make It Real. The album's other rockers, including Twentieth Century Man, Falling in love, and the title track, are equally excellent. There is only one ballad to be found on this album, but it's one of their finest tracks of the styling - a little number entitled Lady Starlight. This is the band at its slowest and most melodic, but it's still an excellent song, and in my opinion, better than the other ballads they would score later in the decade. All the way through, this is an excellent album, and though it lacks the substance of its predecessor, Lovedrive, it's more than worthy of a score of four point five.

To put it simply, this is an album worth owning if you like the Scorpions for their hard rock material. Through and through, this album sticks with a style similar to what other power rock bands of the eighties would use, so if you like eighties hard rock, it's extremely likely that you will like this album. Don't pass it by; it's a Scorpions masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Good remaster.......2002-12-07

Don't think many people need an introduction to the album, so I'll go ahead with the quality. I believe I also placed a review earlier, but it might have been under the wrong version. Basically the sound quality absolutely kills Deadly Sting. Totally demolishes. The only problem is that the remastering exploses some flaws, and there's clicks in track 2 similar to those in some Priest remasters.

Hey You is also different then the old Rockers N Ballads cd. For one, it's cut to 3:40. The other part is that it sounds a lot less organized. It kinda goes all over the place, and the vocals sound like they're barely competing with the music. They're much easier to hear on the old cd. Hopefully that one will sound better when I get that remaster.

3 out of 5 stars Big Improvement.......2002-12-07

I originally typed a review out for this, but mistakenly put it under the old US remastered version. I'll give a shortened one here. The sound quality is a HUGE improvement. It kills Deadly Sting. It's much louder, bigger, more clarity, and a huge improvement in bass. The only drawback is the same kind of clicking present on some Priest remasters that appears on track 2 during a couple verses. It repeats and is somewhat distracting, probably more total clicks on this song then all the clicks combined from the whole set of Priest remasters. There's also the standard static and tape hiss flaws that seem to be showing up on remasters done after 99.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-01-08

This is one of the best peices of music I have ever come across, and yet one of the most newest sounding musics Iv'e heard in a long time, if not thee most. It's inticate simplicity, original, mesmerizing, dissonant, repetitious ringing pulse is SOOO wonderfully moving it can take you to another place(REALLY LOUD IS THE KEY). It has a variety of uniquely arranged instruments, such as the electric guitar which has built in magnetic driver-sustainers for each string and new frets that were installed in a just intonation, and many other cool, original instrument arrangements that really make this sound great and very different (like an acustic guitar outfitted with snares witch is played percussively with sticks, etc). Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars pretty good merzbow album - uses live chicken samples.......2005-08-15

this is one of his early all-computer albums i believe. it features samples of his chickens. i like the artwork, and i like the tracks as an overall background - but i don't find this album as compelling as some of his more recent beat-oriented albums or as eclectic (varied?) as some of his other albums, such as Amlux. It's a good album if you're already really into Merzbow and/or other noise. If you want to try him out, I suggest picking up Frog, Amlux, Merzbeat, or actually the Ikebana Remix Merzbow double-CD.

5 out of 5 stars take me to the nuthouse pronto!.......2004-12-12

More intense, sizzling aural output from the indefatigable Merzbow. Raucous experimental noise, an electronic caterwauling that stimulates and soothes even as it frays sanity. Though Masami Akita, the mastermind behind Merzbow's decades of originality and experimentation, might just be the one person to set you loose in the streets, wild-eyed and foaming at the mouth like Kevin McCarthy in the 1978 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," or reclined in a Crispin Glover-like groove with headphones and eyes closed - lulled into a surral cityscape - like the industrial span of William Gibson's cyberpunk vision - far beyond the limitations of normalcy.

Are helpful psychotropics necessary at the speed of noise? I'll take it over the commonplace and prevalant any time...

Worthy, and highly recommended for the adventurous and open-minded only.

Perhaps I've heard it all before or maybe he is too reliant on Lap top computers to get him through the next album but there is nothing new here.. No where near as ground breaking as other albums. But then again he churns them out like hamburgers at McDonalds. Buying them all starts to get stupid after awhile. Chickens and sheep mixed into the usual sonic shriek. Been there done that.
