Before Pharoahe Monch started playing party games, he was working with partner Prince Poetry to put together three of the best albums in hip-hop history. Stress: The Extinction Agenda is the best of this musical triple crown. Every song has an ace beat that mixes loose, jazzy samples and tightly coiled snares. And every song features two of hip-hop's all-time greatest MCs doing their best work, using their voices like instruments to create performances that are intellectually stimulating and rhythmically bangin'. Pharoahe's verse on "Bring It On" is raw enough to force even the hardest MCs to consider careers as accountants. One warning: Q-Tip's alleged guest appearance on "Let's Organize" consists of him repeating the words "Bounce, let's organize" over and over again with minor variations as the song fades. And it's still a great song. --Joe Schloss

Stress: The Extinction Agenda is a mature album by two emcees that are highly under rated and under appreciated. While I can imagine that this album didnt recieve much commercial success, this says nothing about its genius and its emotive expiremintation with metaphores and anecdotes. Its an energetic album that flatters the listener by exposing them to smart lyrics and unconventional production.

After having listened to this album Pharoahe Monche has proven himself to be one of the best lyricist ever.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD.......2007-05-14

I heard one of the songs on my XM radio - had never had heard of Greg Adams before.

I did not realize he had been around since the 1990's! I had to do some searching to find the song and the album, and then found that it was available though Amazon.

If you like smooth jazz - this is an excellent addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars What a great sound!.......2006-08-18

A little reminiscent of Miles Davis in his last decade, some wonderful other style mixes in there too. Intense at times, then mellow. What a great combination!

5 out of 5 stars Love it enough to buy it again........2006-07-31

Don't know what happened, and I love the whole cd, but my favorite cut, Burma Road, is skipping. Can't have it. Rarely do I do this, but I'm buying it again. I play this cd so much, it's part of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked Since The First Listen !.......2005-01-13

Had I not been up late one night recently listening to a local jazz station playing Burma Road (which caught my interest and piqued my curiosity)I would have never known about this artist!Hard to believe this cd has been out already ten years and I have barely found out about it's existence...

The title of this c.d. could also have been "Smooth Operator" ...smooth, slick, hip, are just a few of the adjectives to describe it. Two more words would be pure class to describe Adams' grand artistic solo performance. Tracks like Burma Road, Moon Over Palmilla, 5 O'Clock Somewhere inspire rich mental visualizations of said places. The listener becomes transported to these mysterious places. Hidden Agenda is completely filled with positive atmosphere and artistic ambiance. Try to pick out one single track to qualify as a dud and NONE will be found ! Guaranteed.

There's so much upbeat vibes and plenty of colorful energy from this spectacular fusion of jazz, hip hop, R&B, funk elements. His rendition of Sade's Smooth Operator, as I understand, was probably the first track to get rotation on jazz/fusion airwaves. Smooth Operator sounds very much like it could have also been specifically written by or for Greg Adams as an instrumental only track ! Most popular songs with vocals that are covered by other artists as instrumentals do not translate very well... It is the extreme opposite with Adams' rendition.

In no way form or fashion will you mistake Greg Adams' Hidden Agenda for generic elevator muzak. If you are hard-pressed to make a comparison, it's almost like Herb Alpert teaming up with Paul Hardcastle on the Jazz Masters series. However, Greg Adams still has a very distinct project and sound with all the musical and horn arrangement hooks you could ever hope for and also be surprised by. This cd did not have to grow on me; It instantly became one of my all-time favorite smooth jazz cd's on the first listen!...It's no hidden agenda on Adams' part to get you to like this cd. Guaranteed you will on your own (practically on the first listen) !

5 out of 5 stars Greg Adams Hidden Agenda tops of list of jazz CDs........2004-06-11

This is my very favorite CD for company and dinner guests. They smile as they move their shoulders about and say "Who is that? I want that!" I have carried this CD around and listened to it so many times that I damaged it and am buying it again. I have looked for it for a couple years! The music is smooth and yet upbeat. You just can't help but start moving to the lovely sounds. I see he finally has a new CD and I am buying that also. He is a winner in my book and one CD I just can't be without!

Album Description

The North American debut for Stockholm, Sweden trio Peter Bjorn And John, on Hidden Agenda Records. Falling Out is a assemblage of ingenious pop songs, cleverly recorded and masterfully arranged, sounds drawn from the simple (the Speak & Spell talking toy that opens the album) to the symphonic (tidy string arrangements). Think early Squeeze and The Jam and several decades worth of British Invasion, Canadian popsmiths A.C. Newman and Joel Plaskett, and the euphoric rush of The Shins. 10 songs about falling in and Falling Out of love with people, places, and ideas. Includes the Swedish singles "It Beats Me Every Time" and "Teen Love" (a Concretes cover) and the standout album opener "Far Away, By My Side".

Songwriters Peter Moren and Bjorn Yttling (producer/arranger for Concretes, Shout Out Louds, Nicolai Dunger, among others) have been writing songs together since their teens but it wasn't until hooking up with drummer John Eriksson in 1999 that the collaboration bore fruit. Since then the band has released four singles, three EPs, and two full-length albums (Falling Out being their second), and performed live hundreds of times.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The first US release, showing the way towards "Writer's Block".......2007-07-22

I am absolutely enthralled with Peter Bjorn & John's current album, "Writer's Block", so far the best album of 2007 for me personally. This lead me to seek out the band's earlier output. This album, released in 2005, is the first US release, but actually the second album of the band (they released a debut album back home in Sweden in 2002).

"Falling Out" (10 tracks, 40 min.) starts off with one of the best tracks (and lead-off single) "Far Away, By My Side", which barrels on through you, and its harmonies at times remind me of early Beatles. "It Beats Me Every Time" (another single) is in the same vein. "Big Black Coffin" is a sad reflection on a failed relationship, with great lyrics like "But it's all clear and bright now/from the statements to the lies/from the big black coffin/to the black under your eyes". "Teen Love" (another single) is a cover of the Concretes' song, and sounds great. "Tailormade" is another yearner for better days, as the chuorus goes "Well I hate to be a downer/but this happens to be the truth/I got lost when you found her/bring me back my youth", wow...

This is a good (but not great) album, and you can tell that with this album the guys would eventually be on their way to yet bigger and better things with "Writer's Way", which is in fact a great album, and then some. Seeing Peter Bjorn & John live at Coachella a few months ago was without a doubt one of THE highlights of the festival. Check them out!

    Album Description

All Music Guide calls it: "A striking collection of hushed and autumnal indie pop bedroom songs that reside on the hi-fi end of the lo-fi spectrum." Veneer is the debut album by Swedish-born minstrel José González…already a certified quiet-is-the-new-loud legend in his native Sweden. Who needs bells and whistles (outside of a forlorn trumpet and some subliminal percussion) when songs are this strong and the voice is this perfect? When all that you need to hold an audience in blissful rapture is what you can balance on a barstool? Jose's sensual, sensitive, powerful vocals and supernaturally gifted guitar playing truly recalls artists like Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Hayden, and Mark Kozelek. He's earned the accolades by writing incredible songs and staying true to his heart, keeping the songs barebones simple.

The José González song "Crosses" was featured on the season finale of The OC.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tranquil Voice, Stimulating Music.......2006-09-24

Jose Gonzalez is a class act. One of his greatest talents is his gift in combining a beautiful, tranquil voice with stimulating, rousing instrumentation. 'Veneer' reflects this perfect combination track after track, and brings the acoustic genre to a new level. It is the perfect soundtrack for buffering this crazy world we live in today. I was introduced to Jose via his work on the latest Zero 7 album. His tracks on that cd bring depth and substance. Likewise, 'Veneer' recharges the mind while soothing the soul...as in my favorite lyric: "Cast some light and you'll be alright".

I have seen Jose perform live twice and even had the opportunity to chat with him briefly. Watching him live is a treat. He becomes one with his guitar, as if he were born playing it. Jose Gonzalez is a rare talent, a humble performer, and a genuinely good guy. Get to know him...get 'Veneer'.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not great.......2006-08-22

The first song I heard from this album was "Heartbeats" on Radio 1 back in late 2004. I thought it was great, but none of Jose's EPs were avialble at that time here in the States. About a year later, I heard a session and interview of his on NPR. He played a number of songs, including "Crosses" and "Stay in the Shade": both excelent.

One the quaility of the songs I heard, and being a fan of folk music and acustic guitar, I purchased the album. I got exactly what I expected: a short album with a dozen really great tracks

There are, however, a couple weak points in my opinion.

First, all the songs, though very good, sound more-or-less very similar. There is not a lot of creative range here.

Second, I agree with the one reviewer that mentioned the songs were too short; it almost seems as though he was more concerned about being radio-friendly than creative.

Overall, a good CD. If you've heard "Hartbeats", "Stay in the Shade, and Crosses and want more of the same, buy this CD. You won't be dissabounted. Don't buy this CD on the strength of "Heartbeats" if it's the only song you've heard. You may find this disc is far more mello and folky than you were anticipating.

3 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Lazy artist.......2006-07-20

I bought veneer because I had heard "heartbeats" on the sony Bravia advert. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. Most of the songs are awesome cos you feel that the artist is emotionally invested in the music but the disappointing thing about this album is that most songs are way under the 3 minute mark. dont know about anyone else but that just strikes me as plain lazy, with such acoustic beauties the lack of length is a crime.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-07-03

This albulm is beautiful, it's so relaxing and calming it's great to just listen to and forget the day.

5 out of 5 stars the escalator .......2006-06-29

the escalator and the man stand at the bottom summed up the album even before i had the pleasure of listening to such beauty and intelligence in my entire life time of listening to folk rock music this has affected me the most i can't tell how much..
i know it's an clinche but.it left me speechless i didn't know whether to cry jump up and down with merriment of..just sit quietly and seep in the beauty i had just been laid next too me.
all them emotions from a voice guitar and a trumpet at the end of broken arrows

how do you say can that happen? because this guy has talent.
to transmit an beauty and vibrance over to the listeners ears
in my mind you have to be in tune with yourself to fully appreciate the album.

we all have these emotions in us to appreciate this album
on another level and i have and i won't be turning back it changed my life this afternoon.. the escalator only goes up..

    Album Description

Soaring debut album from Santa Barbara atmospheric pop outfit. "The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea's debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo's melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead's impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. Imagine a stratospherically skillful space-pop quartet with an entire string section behind it, and you'll be on their wavelength, but for me it all comes down to the voice. Frontman/founder Rey Villalobos' vocals steal the show (think Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue, Radiohead's Thom Yorke): a luminous, sometimes androgynous croon, a silvery warble, without a glimmer of pretension…

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the best music in years.......2007-01-16

Its like a mix between mercury rev, lightning seeds and radiohead but still completely different. It is the most beautifully sad record written since Strangeways Here We Come by the Smiths. No review can do this album justice and I cant wait for another one from this amazing band. It is a 5 star album but i cant figure out how to fix it from the 4 stars i gave it.

5 out of 5 stars It's been a long time since I've found a new band this good.......2006-07-18

This is one of those albums that would be on everyone's top ten list for the year (think How it Ends, by DeVotchKa), if only they'd heard it.
Dark and dramatic, with soaring vocals and melodies similar to obvious comaprisons like Muse and early Radiohead, but with a more intimate, human feel.
From the high emotion of Yesterday/Tomorrow and Fell, to the more mellow, wistful In Between The Days, to the inexplicably catchy Ancient Modern People, Volcano and Heart is worth a listen.

This album is a really fun listen. Almost every track is instantly catchy. The highlights are "Fakin Amnesia" "Untitled Two" and the best track on the album, "Sleepyhead", but I don't think theres really a dud to be heard. If you don't mind strange music you should check this out. It's funny, energetic, bizarre, clever, and sometimes genuinely beautiful music. Oh, and it's is unique. You aren't likely to find anything else in the same style. The question is not whether this album is good, but whether you are open minded enough to appreciate it.

3 out of 5 stars just about right..........2005-08-11

i'd really give this 3.5 stars, if i could. club 8's johann pulls double duty, splitting time between club 8 and acid house kings, proving he's more than capable of continually cranking out quality pop tunes. where club 8 leans a little more towards the elctronic side, AHK employs a little more acoustic approach.

what AHK has going for it are irresistable pop tunes, able musicianship, and pleasant vocals. top tracks include 'sunday morning,' 'she keeps hoping,' and 'swedish hearts.' for as good as these tracks are, you can't help but think johann saved his good stuff for club 8. i could be wrong, though.

'mondays are like tuesdays...' sounds like it could have been released 40 years ago. much like saint etienne and birdie, AHK incorporate xylophones and brass into the music, giving a kitschy sound without coming off as pretentious (no small achievement in twee-pop); and AHK do it in style, exhibiting their skill at crafting three minute pop songs.

a couple of songs, however, border on the just-a-bit-too-sickly-sweet side of things. some of the ba-ba-ba's and cutesy acoustic guitars come off sounding like really bad john denver songs; but fortunately, those songs are few.

by and large 'mondays are like tuesdays...' is a solid pop album by a yet another in a long line of quality scandanavian pop groups. AHK won't turn your world upside down, but if you wear cardigans and mittens, sip herbal tea in hip uptown coffee houses, and talk about the latest fashions, AHK are definitely for you.

Athens, Georgia's Gerbils--Will Westbrook, Scott Spillane, and John D'Azzo--all play in extended lineups of Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control. The Gerbils have their own sound, however, and it's a delectable one. Gushing with ecstatic, fuzzed-out, shambling, warm pop melody, the harmonies are sung at a ridiculously high pitch. The vocals sound unreal; the group consistently achieve Muppets in Space/ Menudo-boy registers that somehow sound really great. The band members are connoisseurs of lovingly deranged pop and borrow equally from late-'60s bubble-gum psychedelia, early-'70s Canterbury prog, and late-'80s bedroom-recorded strummy stuff. Sound levels are intentionally pushed well into the red, flavoring the songs with a wide range of premeditated distortion. The first tune alone, "Sunshine Soul," will propel you through your day, stuck on repeat play in your brain. Its sweet chorus, "Your sunshine soul, it seems to me like some melody," will add a lilt to your step, a smile to your face. --Mike McGonigal

This CD is simply stunning. If you're looking for a hihly polished gem that has been cultivated and nuitured by some big-wig record company, LOOK AWAY. Go listen to britney spears. this cd is about raw energy and talent. it's fuzzy, it's loose. it off key. it's impecable.

    2 out of 5 stars Getting sleepy.......2004-10-29

On-again band the Gerbils are technically a part of the Elephant gang, but you wouldn't know it to listen to their debut "Are You Sleepy?" Half of it is your basic indie-rock, with some slightly warped tracks in the middle of the album, and delivered in an unappealingly sloppy way.

A sort of country-tonk kicks it off in "Sunshine Soul," a song that doesn't match what comes after it. Things get more indie-rockish with "Is She Fiona" and "Crayon Box," before lapsing into the dancy "Fluid" and the bubbly experimental "Wet Host." Then it's back into indie-rock and some solid but unexciting ballads, before wrapping up with the forgettably catchy "Grin."

It's basically an average indie-rock album, but one hampered by unappealing vocals. The rock songs are pretty grounded, but their grounded-ness is what holds them back -- they hint at being capable of being more, but settle for being singsongy, simplistic and folk-tinged. There's nothing too special here.

Musically it's pretty uneven, though taken alone the songs are fairly good. The fuzzy guitar and bass give a lo-fi sound to the rock-ier tracks, and some electronic flourishes give extra life to "Fluid." About halfway through, it seems to occur to the Gerbils that they need some psychedelic stuff, so they patch in some bubbling, gothic sounds -- interesting, but not entrancing.

Let's get this out of the way: Scott Spillane has a very high-pitched voice. What's more, his voice develops an annoying nasal quality at times -- it's okay when he sings ballads like "Glue," but just annoying when he tackles the ghastly "Walnuts." It's not a requirement that a rocker have a perfect voice, but Spillane's does not fit the music.

The Gerbils have potential, but it's not realized in their debut "Are You Sleepy?" Lackluster and marred, but with some solid songs buried in there.

Have you sucked on your helium today?

Okay, maybe poking fun at the vocal stylings of this wonderfully loveable band isn't fair at all, but the first time you hear that voice you cannot help but think; what did this guy inhale?

Once you get past that though, all there is to hear are the songs, and dreadfully fun songs they are. You haven't heard this branch of the indie-pop tree; not since your weird cousin showed you those four-track tapes he recorded when he was high.

Yes, the drums sound like a toy drum kit. Yes, the guitars tinkle like Christmas chimes. Yes, the singer sounds like the demented, helium-sucking half-brother of Billy Corgan. Yes, they began life as part of the infamous Elephant 6 Collective.

And yes, you will absolutely adore this wonderfully eclectic batch of slightly off-kilter pop songs about love being like glue and dinosaurs and ditching your friends when you go to Portastatic shows. Reach into those pockets and grab a copy. You'll either be overly annoyed that you did, but far more likely, you'll love yourself for it.

this is surely one of the best albums ever. if you enjoy wholesome indie rock and Also Consternation Inward Drops you will love this almbum. huh, thats right.

    5 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2001-11-04

If I may be frank (and I may), this is my favorite cd. For a sense of where I'm coming from, the artists which predominate in my collection are Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Ween, Pavement, The Flaming Lips, and Radiohead, but my collection overall is quite extensive and varied. Yet, I like this album better than any other album I own. It's simple (in an aesthetic sense). It's pure. It's sweet. It's enduring. It's personal. It's just so damn friendly. Taste in music being how it is, I wouldn't suggest that this will be your favorite cd. But if you like your music unpretentious, you should at least listen to it and see what happens.

5 out of 5 stars Whispery Dream Pop Pleases.......2005-09-30

Swedish female vocalist whispers melancholy background music. Sometimes the melodies are pronounced enough to be more than that so that it sounds like the Cardigans, but otherwise a good example of seamless "chill out" music that one listens to. Fans of this genre will want to check out Morcheeba, Departure Lounge, Sweet Trip, Color Filter, Airiel, Brazaville, Gentle People, Ronderlin and LeMans.

4 out of 5 stars nothing strange about this beauty..........2005-08-01

i don't know what they put in that scandanavian water, but the region puts out some of the finest pop music around. club 8 is another in a long line of stellar pop acts releasing stellar albums.

the follow up to the amazing 'spring came, rain fell,' sees johann and karolina more focused than on previous efforts. earlier albums were chocked tightly written pop songs, sprinkled with occasional brief experimental-sounding musical interludes. not so on 'strangely beautiful.' this, their most recent album, listens more like a greatest hits collection. it's hit after hit after hit. gone are the little snippits and present are simply great pop songs. johann, it seems, is more confident in his songwriting skills and karolina sounds like that girl you see making eyes at you from across the room, only to bolt for the door once you make your move. she doesn't have the greatest voice in the world (and that's not to say she doesn't have a great voice--it's just a bit thin, but effective) but she doesn't need to. johann's arrangements and melodies are more than enough to carry 'strangely beautiful' to beautiful heights.

like any good popmeister, johann brought some new influences to 'strangely beautiful.' while all the songs on the this album are definitely synthy/electronicky fairs, it's nice to hear the jazzy, bossanova-y influences. here's hoping their next album sees them take their music even futher.

'strangely beautiful' is probably club 8's best, most cohesive album. there's really not a dud nor a dull moment on the album. with 'spring came, rain fell' running a close second. if you area savvy pop music afficionado (and you know who you are), club 8 is your drug.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautifully engaging........2003-06-18

This is a pleasantly comfortable album, something that will send you into a warm, relaxed state. It is such low-key pop that it will cover any bits of worry and frenzy with a soft blanket.

Johan's simple music, a mix of guitar and keyboard, complements Karolina's sugary, light voice quite nicely. Her vocals actually remind me of early Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries, except with a slight Swedish accent. I like all the songs, but my favorites are "I Wasn't Much of a Fight" and "The Next Step You'll Take".
