Product Description
Since 1991, The Luttenbachers have been fusing hardcore punk rawness, death metal speed/technicality, free jazz asymmetry, no wave skronk, prog rock conceptual bombast, electronic noise, and modern classical abstraction. On "The Void", the band walks the line between control and chaos with newfound subtlety and expert precision. This is their most rocking album to date.

    Album Description

Seattle's Jesy Fortino has played coffee shops, on mismatched bills with by-the-book folkies, and fielded far too many questions that address her gender rather than her music. Fortunately for us these things all fall away when she plays. Inhabiting the space carved out by minimal guitar, gentle textures, and stark, immediate vocals, Tiny Vipers' music evokes the contrast and quiet, empty beauty of a grey northwest landscape. A uniquely striking record that's as fully realized as it is spare and beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars real talent is ALWAYS lesser known.......2006-12-12

You probably already know this if you're here, but this is a way underrated 80s band. I got introduced to them from hearing "Never Say Never" at 80s clubs (not until the late 90s) &, prolly only a handful of times, on the radio. The music biz isn't a kind industry, & this band unfortunately fell victim to music peeps that prolly just wanted a generic pretty & skinny female singer to make them $$. It's all about $$ & Barbie clones, right?!?! I don't think this would've been the case if the lead singer had been male. They've only been known for a couple of songs, & it's too bad that they couldn't have gone on to make more recordings, if even under a different label. I know it's easier said than done, & what's done is done, but it's still just unfair & not right to me how many of the actual TALENTED bands in general get snubbed over by the (often) much lesser talented, short-lived eye candy ones. I guess most people only listen to bands with their eyes or something... I just don't get it. I have eyes AND ears, & can spot a good band when I hear it. I could go on & on about this, & I'm sure many people would agree with me, but WHY don't the freaking record execs do something about this?!?! Why is it always about $$??? What happened to putting out music for the actual MUSIC???? The best band I can think of that never made it a big deal (I honestly didn't know what they even looked like for years) was New Order. The music speaks for itself. But I guess since this is superficial AMERICA, & since this band is from here, it's a different story... anyway....

Onto the music, what can anyone say in here? Nothing bad here at all. I prefer her vocals to some of the other more popular female singers of the 80s (pop & rock). It's kinda hard to categorize the music itself... sometimes it feels new-wavey, other times it feels on the cutting edge of post-punk/gothy, mainly with the guitar effects & punchy dance beats. I know the use of saxophone seems like a unique thing, but don't forget other 80s bands that used it: Psychedelic Furs, English Beat, etc. Whatever drives you from listening to the few songs you may know, do yourself a favor & get this, & you won't stop tapping your foot.... or wanting to dance around in your room. If you already like bands like Blondie, Berlin, & The Pretenders, then this is right up your alley. Other lesser known & similar 80s groups with female vocalists you might wanna check out are Altered Images, The Waitresses, & The Primities.

      4 out of 5 stars Classic-ness-osity-ism!.......2006-11-02

This is the ONLY album you need by this band...beatnik new wave at its best. Sadly, they never broke out because at the infancy of music video, the ultra-talented lead singer was deemed visually un-appealing...SADNESS! In my opinion, britney and paris hilton are far less appealing considering their obvious lack of talent.

I don't put undeserving names in capitals!!!

4 out of 5 stars Filling the void.......2006-02-16

This group always seemed more like a novelty band to me, leaning on the lyrical hooks, with a bit of a thin sound, punctuated by the inclusion of a horn. This cd has all the good stuff on it though, and more. It's not that simple either. Debora Iyall's strong vocals aside, the band sounds fantastic too. They are not just a backing band, they step out with some tight rhythms and present an edge that still sounds way fresh.

I think I missed out by not paying attention when they were in their prime. This cd is a great introduction to the band and a terrific compilation all wrapped in one.

5 out of 5 stars Coffee house/new wave pioneers - Romeo Void - this album highlights their genius!.......2005-12-27

Romeo Void was not on the lips of most people in the 1980's even though they should have been.

Formed in the late 1970's, Romeo Void is an important benchmark in American/European music, especially that of the 1980's. Maintaining and even improving on previous rock groups song writing ability, Debora Iyall crafted detailed and involved storylines in her lyrics. The musicians/song writers of Romeo Void created deeply evocative sounds for the new music era. Whereas other punk/pre-new wave groups were incorporating synthesizers to a degree never known before, Romeo Void utilized them, but also did something previously thought to be ridiculous: they incorporated a saxaphone!

The sound that Romeo Void created is completely unique. They were neither punk nor the new sound of new wave. Debora Iyall's wailing and emotional vocals are powerful and uniquely branded the band - something that not many 80's bands managed successfully. Many subsequent bands would re-work Romeo Void's "sound" as they broke into the 1980's music scene. Some succeeded and even surpassed the success of Romeo Void. However, Romeo Void still gets my vote for the highest quality, because it was their uncompromising insistence on their songs sounding the way THEY wanted them to rather than the way their labels wanted.....

Certainly the top 40 hits "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing) and Never Say Never are going to be the reasons that an otherwise unknowing person purchases this album, but rest assured that the entire album is extremely worthy of attention.

It is a great shame that the group broke up in 1985/1986 and we can only hope that their recent attention via VH1's Bands Reunited will encourage this group to really make a move toward a permanent reunion.

Their sound is as desirable today as it was in the 1980's since it is still as unique. In other words, time has been kind to the music of Romeo Void.

If for no other reason than to appease your artistic muse, check this album out - you'll not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD reissue of a lost classic!!!.......2004-07-15

I loved this album when it first came out on vinyl. Wore that out, as well as a cassette copy I found a few years ago.

This is, in my opinion, the best Romeo Void album. This album is filled with many different moods, but the music and lyrics are both consistantly excellent.

Get it now - you won't be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Void Has Been Filled (Trust Your Instincts) !.......2003-10-22

Yes ! Finally ! after all these years this lost and forgotten New Romantic/Wave album from one of the most underrated groups of the 80's has come to the digital format. Almost 20 years to be exact.

The catchy guitar riffs with the drums, synth work hooks, and the wailing saxophone (touch of coolness) made this band more of a cult classic new wave gem than a top 40 pop accessible cliche. Fronted by the smooth, lightweight, yet driving vocals of Deborah Iyall. Romeo Void had subliminal hints of pre-alternative before alternative would come to the forefront in the early 90's.

I strongly recommend this unearthed musical treasure to be listened to by some of the younger whipper snappers. They will realize there were new wave artists of the 80's who were a sort of blue print for the alternative scene of the 90's and beyond...

5 out of 5 stars The Genesis .......2007-07-06

Back in the very early 90's you could not go to a club where the "Spice" was not at least played sometime during the night, the pounding bassline maxed out most soundsystems and packed the dance floors.

Solid from start to finish this classic CD goes down in the history books of electronic dance music.

      5 out of 5 stars Essential........2006-09-27

I agree with all the other posted comments. This album is essential. It started me on a buying spree in the techno/breakbeat/house genre, but after all these years, it's still on my list of Top 10 electronic albums. Even the ambient-style closer, "Dawn on a New World," is good.

      5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2003-05-12

Eon's "Spice" was my introduction to rave/techno back in 1991 shortly after moving to San Francisco. I can still remember being at a street fair on a Sunday afternoon in the summer of 91, techno DJ crankin' this one and thinking ... this is the best music I've ever heard. It still sounds new in 2003. This is old skool techno at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Where Darkest Stars Dwell.......2003-03-07

If you're considering this disc, ask yourself how you came here?

With 'Basket' Eon lead the way of Flat-Note House. Now known as Dark House.

While the musicians had strong roots in the development of the House sound, destructive intonations seemed irresistable to the doomed. Flat notes spun over breakneck speed sent crowds deep into the darkest corners of their consciousness. As Dune samples wheeled through danceable knowledge of pain and fear, surviving listeners raised to pillars over heaven. An ability to be was no longer sought.

Calm loops in chaos kept even the innocent in the balms of evil. Skimming beneath warm clouds of a never before seen stomp, Eon introduced true madness to a scene already riddled with insanity - and challenged its ability to maintain.

Stomping crashes took every spun raver into the flat ranges of desperation, and raised the power of both literary wisdom and the drive of tribal pursuit in a music that should be compared to the dark guitar work of early Sabbath. With the power of House, HERE is secret few sane hear.

In 1992 I'm not sure Eon knew what they were doing, but an entire legion of House opened because of their foresite. Because of them, Nwafor and Stow exist.

In the stew of House, Void Dweller should be considered a point of origin.

Make madness as you shall. Should you listen to Dweller diligently, here ever after I wish you, do your best to keep any sense of sense.

5 out of 5 stars I might like you better if we slept together..........2007-03-14

Ah, the hopeful outlook of the '80s, before everyone knew all the nasty things you could get from sleeping with someone. I loved this record then, and it still sounds fresh and rocking after all these years, thanks to Debora Iyall's aggressive vocals. All the songs are good, very cynical and wonderful for people recovering from a relationship gone bad or just feeling lonely.

5 out of 5 stars The Best US Post-Punk Band at its peak........2006-02-04

Most US punk, new wave & ska bands from the early 80s tended to be pale imitations of UK acts, who usually had smarter lyrics, better playing & catchier rhythms. Romeo Void was the exception. Romeo Void's use of saxophone & Debra Iyall's sultry voice added a jazzier dimension to their music and really separated them from the growing New Wave crowd. Add to that smart lyrics & a danceable beat and you have a winning early 80s combo. Unfortunately they didn't quite garner as much success as other, lesser bands, and the success they did achieve was from their more inferior material, after which they quickly disbanded.

Romeo Void's "nvr sy nvr" EP (included in its entirety here as bonus tracks) is the group at its peak. This masterpiece, which was produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars, was first issued on San Francisco's 415 label and received modest attention on college radio, but little else. However, because the infectious & catchy song "Never Say Never" continued to receive regular play in clubs & on college stations a full year after its release, Columbia signed the band & released the album "Benefactor" featuring a censored/edited version of "Never Say Never". It then re-issued the EP, giving it a bit more visibility, thereby still getting air/club play for over 2 years after it's initial release. I remember "Benefactor" being a bit of a disappointment, if only because the songs were shorter than "nvr sy nvr" and (except for Undercover Kept) not quite as infectious. However, the album grew on me with repeated listenings and soon grew to like it as much as their first album (It's a condition), though it did seem to make a nod in a more commercial direction.

      5 out of 5 stars 2 down, 1 to go.......2006-01-27

All we need now is the re-release of "It's a Condition".
Wounded Bird Records has done New Wave music a great service by releasing this album on CD. As an added treat, you get the "Never Say Never" E.P. which is included as bonus tracks.
Debora Iyall's voice had a disconnected condescending quality that inspired lust and erotic vibrations.
Benjamin Bossi's Sax playing needs to be singled out as a highlighted element as well. His impact is still felt today. His solos have been included in popular video games. He has transcended his artisic medium.
Zincavage kept the pace of the songs with a sometimes hostile bass rhythm that was thick and fluid. The other instrumentation, of Wood and Carter, stuck to his bass-lines like they were taffy.
Ultimately this band's success was victimized by the image obsessed era they arrived in; the 80's. If Debora Iyall had the figure of a Jessica Simpson, they would have had the full force and resources of their record company's marketing department behind them.

5 out of 5 stars "Benefactor" finally on CD!.......2006-01-22

        Amazon.com essential recording

Departing from the tribal themes that occupied him through most of the 1990s, Roach takes a philosophical leap into Void, directing his endless reverbs and glowering synth programs toward the speck at the center of the universe. Eschewing the indigenous drums and didgeridoos of his Dreamtime Return-era work, pieces like "Between the Gray and the Purple" could as easily be the soundtrack to a psychological thriller as a rumination on infinity. "Void Memory One" refracts sheets of pure frequency across a pitch-black galaxy; "Cloud of Unknowing" taps the elements in a maelstrom of cosmic wind and solar fire. What--too much imagistic hyperbole for you? Roach invites such musings, if only because he carries you down those dark corridors so convincingly. Sequenced as one continuous piece, Void is an astral-gothic collage of fear, transcendence, and weightlessness; a high-water mark of space music; and one of Roach's finest hours. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-07-14

If you enjoyed the star ride in "2001" A Space Odyssey," you are going to love this one. This is very dramatic, dark, ambient. Think of it as an hour long ride through a black hole, put on your headphones, and buckle your seat belts. Not for relaxing. This is for active listening. Sci-fi ambient journey. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The Sounds of Innerspace and Beyond.......2006-06-11

I experienced this disc in a dark house with some incense burning and my stereo at just the right volume.Being perfectly relaxed I on went on the 70+ minute journey of sound with an open mind and at least a little excitement building inside of me.I felt an incredible loosening inside of me thats hard for me to express or describe....it really shook me mentally, spiritually and musically and has since become a true favorite. There is nothing to compare this music to....dark yet textured, effortless yet so full of tones and sounds that can indeed carry you to places you have never(or don`t want)to go.
Haunting but beautiful,Steve Roach with this disc has made his mark on recorded music.A sonic journey to the true depths of inner space and beyond that flows through you, making you not a passive listener but part of the music.
I never expect to have the same experince again but one thing is for sure....I`ll never forget it.A worthy addition to anyones collection.

        5 out of 5 stars unreal.......2005-03-09

there was a time when i hated this album, then there came a time when i thought it was okay, but nothing special, now a i love it. i've never had an album take this long to grow on me.

Steve creates a huge sound scape on this recording, lush synths work by contrasting smooth sounds with slightley rougher whispery sounds. some portions are more more melodic than others, but over all the album flows like a single work.

Cloud of Unknowing is probably the coolest part, a very epic melody over massive synths. the final track Atlus moves with a more repetative minmal melody than most the album, and makes it a dynamic closing section.

i have to stress that if you bought this and didn't like it, clear your mind and when you're in the right mood play it through. i'm not sure what i was missing, maybe it was the scope of this thing, its huge.

Like an earlier reviewer, I also bought Roach's Void at the same time as Lustmord and Rich's Stalker. I agree with the previous reviewer that Stalker is unbelievably moving, but unlike him I resonated very strongly with Magnificent Void. It is rich with subtlety and fullness--as if the universe were belching forth from the void in super-slow-mo. Not as image-inducing as Stalker was, it is rather a deep unfolding of the mystery in its own time. I can understand where the detractors might come from based on its slow progression, but it really works for me.

        5 out of 5 stars A Steve Roach Masterpiece!.......2005-01-26

The Magnificent Void is a modern ambient classic by the master of the genre, the very talented and prolific Steve Roach. The album can be viewed as a dark ambient/space music album. The Magnificent Void in my opinion is what Tangerine Dream's 1972 album Zeit would sound like today if it had been released in 1996.Anyhow,regardless of comparisons,The Magnificent Void manages to exert a sound of its own, much like all of Roach's albums, which is a very good quality if I do say so myself. The album opens with the wonderfully titled,"Between The Gray & The Purple",where you can immediately feel the overall ambience of the album, relaxing yet haunting enough to keep you interested from beginning to end. This continues on track 2,"Void Memory One",the first of three brief interludes, and immediately spills over into track 3,"Infinite Shore",my personal favorite on the album. It is on this track that the strongest, most vivid washes of "Void" induced ambience engulfs you, evoking vivid images of a literal,"Infinite Shore",a shore that you don't want to leave, but of course, the music moves on,taking you to track 4,the "Cloud Of Unknowing",where you float for a seemingly eternal amount of time, when realistically,it has only been around 10 and a half minutes,10 and a half minutes of pure, uninterrupted bliss. After leaving the "cloud",another "void" memory is induced on track 5,"Void Memory Two",followed by yet another one, this time, the final,on track 6,"Void Memory Three",which leads you over to "The Magnificent Void" itself,(track 7),escorting you through the darkest regions of the "Void",where the sounds of shimmering bells, most likely synthesized, entrance you as the rising and falling synth guides you along to the final piece, track 8,"Atlus",which is the most quiet sounding and relaxing on the entire album, while also ranking as the longest track on the album, clocking in at 20 minutes, which is a good thing, the longer, the better,as is the case with Steve Roach's recordings. It is a perfect way to end a masterpiece of an ambient album. This is one that you will not want to end.My personal advice is to listen to this album at night,in an enclosed room with the light off. This is a perfect place to start if you are new to Steve Roach's music. If you like this album,I strongly recommend you try Tangerine Dream's Zeit album, you will enjoy it,I promise.I highly recommend "The Magnificent Void" for all ambient/space music fans.Enjoy!

          5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation from 415 Records!!!.......2004-07-18

The Best of 415 Records is a compilation CD containing great tracks from the bands on the roster of 415 records, specifically Wire Train, Red Rockers, Translator, Until December, and Romeo Void.

For this review, I am going to limit my comments to the Romeo Void tracks. The other groups I will review later.

The three Romeo Void tracks on this CD are uniformly excellent. Only one track can be found elsewhere.

A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing) can also be found on the Romeo Void compilation CD "Warm, In Your Coat" as well as the recent Wounded Bird Records re-release of "Instincts". It's likely available on many 80's compilations as well. You can get an exclusive "Dance Mix" of this songs on a CD entitled "Classic Alternatives Vol 3. It's a great remix, and worth checking out.

Never Say Never is presented in it's original unedited, full length version. Most 80's compilation contain the version bleeping out a rude word in the second verse, and the "Warm, In Your Coat" compilation is missing the beginning guitar only intro. So the only place to get Never Say Never in it's original (and best) version is on this CD.

Not Safe is exclusive to this cd, and it not available anywhere else (as of July 18, 2004).

Hopefully we will see reissues of Romeo Void's other albums: It's A Condition and Benefactor, as well as the NVR SAY NVR EP.

The only thing that could make this disc better (from a Romeo Void fan's standpoint) would be the inclusion of "Apache", which was a Jorgen Ingmann cover songs recorded as the b-side to Romeo Void's first single "White Sweater".

All in all, this is a good compilation. Get it while you can!!!
