Album Description

For the past seven years or, to be more precise, since the opening tones of their sensational debut album, Legendary Tales, Rhapsody have been one of the most unusual phenomena of the current metal scene. The huge range of their creativity, the number of legendary compositions that the Italian band, with their primary members guitarist Luca Turilli and keyboarder Alex Staropoli, have released so far reached the climax with the new album Symphony Of Enchanted Lands II - The Dark Secret. A new saga has been born, one that takes the listener on a musical adventure featuring epic, fast metal tracks and sonic landscapes with stirring narrative. It is the debut of a new style of Heavy Metal music created by Rhapsody known as Film Score Metal. The massive production, led by Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli themselves was done in several studios throughout Europe; from England to Italy, from the Czech Republic and Belgium to Germany. Supported by appearances by more than a dozen international guest soloists and the entire Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra from the Czech Republic, a 50 piece choir as well as Christopher Lee - the grand seigneur of film and one of the most filmed actors in history, Symphony Of Enchanted Lands II - The Dark Secret will set the world of Symphonic Metal on fire.

2 out of 5 stars Perhaps too much of what I expected.......2007-04-04

I purchased the first Symphony of Enchanted Lands along with Unholy Warcry. I liked them enough that I decided to get what was at the time Rhapsody's latest offering. I knew full well what I was getting into: cheesy dialogue, over-the-top vocals, and fast guiter wankery.

Well, when I was able to give this album a listen, I was disappointed.

My main gripe with SoEL II is the amount of dialogue, which I guess isn't so bad, but I grew bored of it by my third listen to the album. I ended up ripping each track and creating my own CD with select songs from this album.

The music itself is enjoyable, especially if you're already a fan of Rhapsody. However, this album was just not to my liking.

5 out of 5 stars Another amazing album from Rhapsody!!!.......2007-03-12

Every single song on this album sent chills down my spine! Fabio Lione's voice and the musical prowess of the other bandmates, this album is by far one of the greats from them!! For anyone who loves epic metal, a true fantasy tale, this album will be a sure fire win!!

5 out of 5 stars it wants what it wants and what it wants is metal.......2006-11-06

hello fellow metallians, i just have got to say that this album really grows on you over time. every album by rhapsody to me are all masterpieces in their own right, this cd continues the symphonic epic style that rhapsody has truly perfected and crafted into what is one of the most amazing styles of metal that i have ever heard. this album is truly epic in scope and full of memorable moments. i love the song never forgotten heros, it has some of the most beautiful intricate and delicatly slaying guitar work ever to emerge from the finger tips of luca turilli, this song is by far one of the best songs to ever be recorded by a symphonic band. fabio sings so perfectly on this album, never have i heard him put so much effort into his vocals as he has on this song(never forgotten heros) just listen to the main guitar solo. it will melt your mind. also the song unholy warcry is awesome, and typical rhapsody. from amazing power metal ballads to 10+minute epics, this cd keeps the rhapsody flame burning and shows that the future of rhapsody is to be as brilliant and majestic as their past. if you are new to the power metal scene and are interrested in hearing rhapsody and you wish to find out what all the hype about rhapsody is, or if you just want to hear for your self if they are truly as great as they are said to be then start out with the cd,(rhapsody-tales from the emerald sword saga) because it is a perfect way to get to know rhapsody. it has the best songs from their first 5 albums and is truly one of the greatest best of cd's ive ever heard. there are so many great power metal bands out today trying to keep the flame alive and i am so very thankfull for all of them. rhapsody are truly up there with the top 10 of the whole pack. so many bands are trying to immitate rhapsody and some of them are very good, but none of them can hope to compare with the masters of symphonic epic power metal RHAPSODY.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Metal orchestration.......2006-09-02

Ingenious orchestrations incorperating classical and electronic elements to create the optimum in "Epic Metal" composition.

"Rhapsody" contains the three primary elements which comprise Malefik Musick: I. Exceptional Orchestration, II. Application of Aesthetics / Theatrics, III. Imaginative Lyrickal content.

It takes quite a bit to impress Me from this genre anymore, preferring superior evocations to 'contemporary' fare, but these musicians, along with a scarce select few besides, receive the Draconian 'Seal of Approval'.

Yes, that is the legendary Christopher Lee narrating.

5 out of 5 stars Rhapsody + Christopher Lee + Orchestra = Great Metal!.......2006-06-10

I could go on forever about how much I love this CD, but instead I will give a brief description of each song.

The Dark Secret- This is a very atmospheric intro; it really sets the tone with great narration by Christopher Lee ("The Wizard King.") 10/10

Unholy Warcry- Typical Rhapsody goodness, with a great instrumental section, and more great narration by Christopher Lee. I don't care much for the little guitar doodle towards the end- it gets a bit repetitive. 9/10

Never Forgotten Heroes- It starts off very similar to "Wisdom of the Kings" on SoEL1, and then goes on to a very catchy chorus. 10/10

Elgard's Green Valleys- This is a very weak transition piece. 5/10

The Magic of the Wizard's Dream- This is an amazing Ballad. You have to hear it to believe it. 10/10

Erian's Mystical Rhymes- Interesting Monster Noises at the beginning, although you can't understand them, and so I usually just fast forward through the first minute. The rest of this ten minute song is very interesting. 9/10

The Last Angel's Call- A more typical Rhapsody song; it has a great tune and reminds me more of Riding the Wings of Eternity from the First SoEL. It is very catchy. 10/10

Dragonland's Rivers- Some stream and grunting noises for a minute- supposed to sound like a Dragon drinking from a stream I guess. It is a short, but beautiful ballad. 9/10

Sacred Power Of Raging Winds - My favorite Rhapsody Song!! Picture this: A band of heroes are walking through the snow, Christopher Lee is calling upon the gods to help them on their quest. Then, a heavy guitar comes out of the fog. Then there is a very catchy main melody, and a very intense second verse. This is followed by a great dialogue between the Demon King and his son, Fabio Lione. Then, the song transitions into an amazing 4 minute instrumental solo, with some crazy syncopation. This song also revisits Elgard's green valleys, which creates the impression the travelers have returned to that same village in the heart of battle, furthering the "Film" aspect of the album. 200/10

Guardiani del Destino- This is an amazing ballad, full of energy. Unfortunately, I don't know Italian, but it is still enjoyable to listen to! 9/10

Shadows Of Death- A more typical Rhapsody song again, but it seems like Fabio tries too hard on the vocals. Overall, an interesting song, though. Good synthesizer and guitar solos. 9/10

Nightfall on the Grey Mountains- It builds up to the chorus, then falls back down in the same manner. It is kind of an odd ending to such an amazing CD. 7/10

OVERALL: Definitely recommended to all Rhapsody fans, Metal fans, Rock Fans, and Lord of the Rings fans! (As Christopher Lee plays a big part of the album)

WHEN FILM-SCORE METAL COMES ALIVE!

In January 2006, Italian Film Score Metal icons Rhapsody are poised to release their first live album ever on Magic Circle Music - entitled Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret!

This testimony of pure energy, over 60 minutes long, was recorded at the 'Albert-Rousseau Arena' in Quebec City on June 13, 2005 during leg one of Rhapsody being the special guest on Manowar's 'Demons, Dragons and Warriors World Tour'. The first leg of the tour, completed in Summer 2005, was highly acclaimed internationally for its stripped down and performance orientated arrangements, which allowed the band to prove that the music is the message. "This album is exceptionally magical", says guitarist and composer Luca Turilli. "It combines the song visions with the fun we had on stage and the amazing reaction from the fans". Keyboardist and composer Alex Staropoli joins: "The reaction of the fans in Canada and the US was just unbelievable. That's why we simply had to name this album 'Live In Canada'. A true dedication!"

This Special Edition of Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret will be released as a two disc set featuring the complete Quebec show and a bonus DVD with exclusive behind-the-scenes-material as well as the complete album in 5.1 surround sound! With no doubt this will set the band's epic performance in a new light and give the listener a truly monumental audio experience.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Could have had a longer and better set.......2006-02-10

I'm giving this three and a half stars actually.

I don't feel I'm getting much more with the bonus DVD, other than finding out I'm going to be spending more on the upcoming live DVD (!). I don't find much use for the additional audio version of the concert on DVD.

Complaints first. Such a short set. Only nine songs actually, not counting the intro `The dark secret' and the `Gran finale.'

The selection is not great. They put relatively boring stuff like `Village of the dwarves' instead of something like `Holy thunderforce' or `Rain of a thousand flames.'

I'm not the biggest fan of the album `The dark secret' either, so to see three of the nine songs coming from there, wasn't very cool. Or they could have put `Never forgotten heroes' if they really wanted a `Dark secret' song.

You can barely hear the bass guitar in the mix, so there's always that lack when listening to it.

For live concerts, I prefer huge arena-sounding drums with a real deep end and strong reverb for the snare, but the snare in this CD is alright. The bass drum however could have been mixed a bit more.

I'm glad the CD contained `Wisdom of the kings' and `Emerald sword' at least. And Rhapsody is always a tight band, at least from what I'm heard from a bootleg.

So there. There could have been more songs, and less `trudge' songs like `Village of the dwarves.' They could have put a lot more goodies on this CD. I hope the DVD lives up to its claim of having plenty of documentaries and stuff. I actually enjoy documentaries and stuff as much if not more than the recorded concerts.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Stuff Here!.......2006-02-03

This is a very good live album! All the songs sound really really good. The setlist is not the best, but it works well.

I wish the dvd had the whole entire Live In Canada concert on it... That would have been a lot better, but it only has a few previews of the shows.

If your a fan of Rhapsody, or a fan of POWER METAL in general, you should pick this up, and give it a listen.

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis

Amazon.com

Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-07-29

This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.

3 out of 5 stars Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22

This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.

This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.

5 out of 5 stars if you like bjorling this is the best thing you can get!.......2000-06-26

this is so awesome, i love his voice, this is good for anyone, the professional or just someone who wants to hear the greatest tenor of all times! this is so great

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02

When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25

Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.

This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Roman Twilights.......2006-08-11

I read all the reviews on amazon for this cd and went ahead and bought it about a year ago. I have to agree with most of the comments. This is not for someone new to Eno as it is made up of out takes from some of his best albums. However, if you are an Eno fan it is definitely worth buying. It has actually become one of my favorites. True, many of the tracks sound like different versions of previously released tracks. For instance, Reactor, Chermin de Fer and Dark Waters sound like songs that were on Another Green World. Always Returning sounds like something from Apollo. And From the Coast is Quartz from Music For Films, Fuseli is Patrolling Wire Borders. Some of the others were new to me but sound like they could have been quite at home on earlier albums. The Dove and Roman Twilight sound like tracks from The Pearl. Empty Landscape, Drift Study and Dawn, Marshland sound like aural landscapes from On Land. My only complaint is that the pieces are too short. Many could be extended to twice their length and still hold my interest. And it would be nice if the retitled repeats (Fuseli and From the Coast) could be replaced with new pieces. Still, if you enjoy On Land, The Pearl, Apollo, Another Green World and the original Music For Films you will probably like this one as well.

4 out of 5 stars One Man: Two Musics.......2005-07-03

I don't know if my CD vesrsion of Music for Films is AstralWorks; all I know is that the CD version rearranged the sequence of songs which is a sacrilidge - this is one of the reasons I still keep a high qualty turn-table in operating shape for listening to original vinyl releases.

At my age, I consider myself a fully competent commentator on Brian Eno's Music. Having first "discovered" my liking when I first heard "No One Receiving" and its David Bowid/Carlos Alomar style bomp, I was hooked. (I was in a Bowie phase in 1974-77).

Then my pure interest in Eno's music was the concretely sealed upon hearing "Another Green World" - That LP changed the way I listened to music. All of this on vinyl, at the time in which it was released.

My current opinion of Brian and his music is that he isn't interested in his own back-catalog very much or his re-issues. I am not even sure he owns the rights to much of his pre-OPAL material. Sure he gets royalties. But maybe not say-so in editing, I don't know. I'd be guessing

but, if you have been folowing the Oddities Volumes, you will also know he has a vault of things he (or his record company at the time) never released.

Eno has never been about the past. I consider him one of the greatest Futurists of the modern day.

EnoShop does a great job as distributing his current works which are almost all totally "Installation" music for rooms and enviroments he creates in museums etc.

Installations are Eno's primary "solo" medium. Actually, I think he's rather be raising his daughters or lecturing on a variety of theories and subjects, than making music. Not that he dismisses the fans of his music, but he has always just seemed to shun the lime light.

Eno could have been a great rock-star and he always went out-of-his-way to dodge this categorization.

Back to his current music - (I was fortunate enough to experience the Neroli exhibit in Madrid, over a decade ago.)...

From Neroli forward, Eno has pressed towards "experiential pieces" (in a way, like Stockhausen; These pieces, I feel do not translate well to the home stereo "Active listening mode". These works stil make for very good ambient music (in his defintion of the word) not the current translation of the ambient genre, which I would call "easy-listing techno".

On many great occasions, he has made collaborative musice that is much more extroverted and relative to the Eno we like to associate with the his first 7 solo albums ("The passage of my life is measured out in shirts"). But the lone Eno is a different animal.

His work with John Cale, Jah Wobble, Peter Schwalm and most recently and superbly again with Robert Fripp, brings out the very best of Eno's external musical self. He collaborates extremely well. He composes for himself, I believe.

I also see him faithfully applied as the "5th Beatle" in the music of James, The Talking Heads and of course U2. The song "We're all going to miss you" - on the James album with the pig on the cover - (at over 40 my places and names get foggier)is an excellent example.

This song could be dropped into "Here comes the warm jets" and fit right in; Farfisa Organ and Eno singing one complete refrain and all the backing vocals in his old reminscent style.

His new album, Another day on Earth" is very good. Eno has said it many times himself, he doesn't like to sing and doesn't think he sings well or likes the sound of his own voice.

To me, his singing is is like pure peace ( the second side of "Before and after Science" is just a vocal masterpiece.

Eno's voice is an under-used intstrument. But my opinion about his new vocal Album is that it feels forced; like so many fans wanted him to sing that he felt he had to put and album of songs together, even though this is not his current interest and subsequently resulted in not his best vocal album.

Maybe,I'll write a book, or a blog, because so many younger Eno fans may not have the same time-frame of perspectibeve that older Eno fans might have; I'm nealy his age and have everyting he's ever released and some he didn't release. (Those boot-leg vinyl's from the 70's were pretty rough.

Any way, this is not a criticism, I just think you have to separate the motive of the musician from the motives of the record company and try to figure out who is benefiting and calling the shots.

I personally did not need a re-issue of Another Green World or Before and After Science. But Somebody, EG or Island or Warner/AOL thought it would be a good idea; I don't know if Eno even had a say in it.

That's my 2-cents for the night.

    Good night

1 out of 5 stars Astralwerks mastering errors.......2005-06-30

Does anyone have the final word on the degree to which Astralwerks (sic) have screwed up these Eno 'remasters'?

'Another Green World' has the first bars of 'Everything merges with the night' missing, 'Climate Study' is missing from this release (More Music For Films), and someone on the Amazon review of 'Music For Films' states that the intro to 'Quartz' on that album is also truncated. Are Astralwerks just a bunch of amateurs or something? Eno must be well pleased with this mess..

1 out of 5 stars Sounds like a collection of unfinished work........2005-06-15

I find it hopelessly ironic that of all the material in the dozen reissues thus far, the one I was most wanting to get my hands on is the one that I find completely extraneous. "More Music For Films", essentially material from the "Music For Films Director's Edition" promo and "Music For Films, Volume 2" (and evidentally largely released on a boxed set some time back) is mostly an uninteresting effort. Quite simply, it feels like a collection of leftovers.

The album sounds like it was recorded in several batches, with material from each session adjacent to each other. This gives a small feeling of unity to each section, but all of the pieces have this unfinished feel about them, as though this was the raw material from which Eno would typically construct his actual pieces.

Its not that its all that bad, "Chemin de Fer" early on is a nice piece featuring some superb fretless bass playing (from Percy Jones), "Reactor" is a nice percussion loop-driven piece with a sublimely irritating lead guitar (although at 1:40, it ends before it starts).... I could go on, but overall, this is a completely unsatisfying listen.

My advice, if you're an Eno fan, get ahold of this, you'll want it. If you're anyone else, digest the proper albums before coming to this one.

    3 out of 5 stars Mastering Mistakes.......2005-05-03

No, I haven't purchased this yet as I'm waiting for Virgin/Astralwerks to correct their mastering mistakes. As has already been pointed out "Climate Study" is not on here but is in fact "Approaching Taidu". Also "Fuselli" unless it's a different mix that I can't detect from the sound sample is "Patrolling Wire Borders" and "From The Coast" is in fact "Quartz", both from MUSIC FOR FILMS. Let's hope they replace these repeats with "Dover Beach", the long version of "Signals" and both versions of "Always Returning". On a positive note the actual audio quality sounds promising from the samples I listened to (finer detail).

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.

        Recommended.
