Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Glenn Hughes solo Album.......2007-08-02
I've been listening to Glenn for almost 35 years now and he is one of my all time favorite vocalists. In fact I've always preferred him to Coverdale and wonder what he would have sounded like with Gillan! And, even through all his ups and downs, his voice still sounds as soulful and powerful as ever.
He has many great albums (check out Hughes/Thrall if you haven't already) and I always look forward to a new release but this album stunned me upon first hearing it. It's darn good, almost on an entirely different level than the handful of albums that came before it. He was clearly rejuvenated and riding high on his increasing popularity many, I'm sure, being older fans finding their way back to him. I'm also sure the "guests" on this album helped as well.
There's not a single song that I would skip over but "She Moves Ghostly", "Orion", and "Change Yourself" all stand out and I will say, without any reservations, that "Let it Go" is nothing less than a masterpiece. The emotion and power of that song jump right out of the speakers at you and I would LOVE to hear/see a live version of it. Being about his drug addiction and subsequent recovery, this song is clearly important to Glenn.
His core band has never been better and Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith is simply on fire!! As much as I hate to say it, this album is so good the next one (Music of the Devine) was kind of a let down. it'll be intersting to hear the next one.
With the release of both this and "Fused", his album with Tony Iommi, 2005 was a banner year for Hughes fans! If you are a fan you should be ashamed of yourself if you don't already own Soul Mover!! If you mainly know him from Deep purple and Trapeze and are curious about his solo released...here's where to start. If you aren't that familiar with his work and simply like good rock n' roll and/or great vocals, then get this album, get it immediately!! Now...if he'd start playing stateside somewhere other than NY, LA and Orlando...I'd be a happy man!!!
Glenn Hughes - Heavy Metal Funk Rock Makes A Comeback.......2007-05-14
Hughes is probably best known as a former bass player and vocalist for Deep Purple. He also was a founding member of Trapeze and did a stint with Black Sabbath among others. I first really became aware of him from a song he sang on Spock's Beard's keys man Ryo Okumoto's solo album. When "Soul Mover" came out I kept reading rave reviews about it, so I decided to pick it up. I am glad I did as it is a great hard rock disc with a good dose of patented Hughes funk thrown in. The album was mainly a project between Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The two really mesh together well and provide an absolute killer rhythm section throughout the album. Dave Navarro (former Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction) provides most of the guitar. Hugh's voice is still incredible after all these years and he is no slouch on the bass either. He went through some difficult years with drug and alcohol problems but has come out the other side performing as well has he ever has. If you have ever been a fan of Hughes work with Purple or Sabbath or if you just like you heavy rock with a good dose of funk and soul this album is well worth checking out.

The Voice Of Rock Keeps On Moving!!!!.......2006-01-28
Glenn Hughes has returned once again for a stunning album in Soul Mover. I must give a lot of credit to Glenn for turning his life around back in 1992 from battling recent drug and alcohol addictions he endured during the late 70's and throughout the 80's. I must also give credit to the KLF for recruiting Glenn who sang on their hit song "America: What Time Is Love?" It was that song that firmly cemented his comeback throughout the 90's not to mention them labelling Glenn as "The Voice Of Rock." A title he still cherishes to this day.
So after countless albums, all of which have been superb, Soul Mover soulfully moves into 2005 in a big way. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith features on this album as they've formed quite a friendship as of late. Dave Navarro also guests on a couple tracks. Rejoining Glenn is longtime guitarist JJ Marsh. His contribution to Glenn's albums has been rather impressive to say the least. An underrated musician Marsh really is. So glad that the guy has been working with Glenn for a long time not to mention the Hughes Turner Project albums also.
Well there isn't a weak moment on this album. There are some amazingly composed tracks including the title track, She Moves Ghostly, Orion, Let It Go, Dark Star, Land Of The Living (Wonderland) which is a favourite for me. High Road and Change Yourself are also fantastic tracks as is the closing track Don't Let Me Bleed. Glenn along with Chad and his fellow Chili's guitarist John Frusciante recently covered the Moody Blues classic Nights In White Satin for the Stealth movie soundtrack. This stunning cover is now included with a special Australian edition of Soul Mover. And there are hopes that Glenn will be in Australia next month. It's looking pretty unlikely as February is just around the corner.
Soul Mover is a superbly crafted album of soulfully funkified proportions. Glenn's voice certainly has improved with age and I look forward to what other endeavours he may pursue as the years go by. Soul Mover. Glenn's finest album in years.
Moving Funkified Soul.......2006-01-09
Man, Glenn Hughes has got to be exhausted; releasing Soul Mover, Fused (with Tony Iommi) and HTP II (with Joe Lynn Turner) all within a year of one another. But somehow his spirit and enthusiam has not waned, as this is possibly his strongest solo effort yet this century. Hughes seems determined to keep pushing the bar, and keeping vital by bringing in hotshot guitarists and in this case, a well established and respected drummer. The addition of RHCP's Chad Smith is a huge plus, his style meshes in nicely with Glenn's funked up hard rock leanings. Smith's rhythmic complexities add both punch and excitment not previously heard on Glenn's solo outings. Likewise, Dave Navarro's scorching solos on "Soul Mover" and "She Moves Ghostly" add a dose of chili pepper to already great songs.
The stongest songs are the bookends, the two mentioned above along with the nu-funk of "High Road" (catchiest song here), and the last two "Last Mistake" and the complex and emotional "Don't Let me Bleed." JJ Marsh is dependable as ever, and seems to be inspired by the injection he got from the addition of Navarro and Smith. This is especially heard during the brilliant solos from the retroreflective-come-stomper "Let It Go" and funky "Dark Star." Marsh has to be credited for never letting any of the songs drop off, as there is neary a weak track to be found, which is probably the first time this is the case in the last three or four Hughes platters.
Soul Mover is a fine step forward... not the product of a classic rock icon on cruise control. Now just think if he could get all his past and present guitarists together for one all-star jam session. Wishful thinking perhaps, but Glenn has a way of turning up where you'd least expect.

A welcome reissue from prime Atlantic period.......2006-02-08
Not one note of Wilson Pickett's Atlantic period should be out of print. Sadly, Midnight Mover has never been on commercial CD but that finally that has been rectified. Midnight Mover is very strong, cuts 1-10. It's a coincidence that Collectables has been releasing Pickett's classic individual albums at the time of his death. But it has served to make them even more relevant than before.
Pickett released 10 LPs on Atlantic and they're all essential. Many of the non-single tracks are just as good as the hits. Collectables delivers the usual skimpy notes but at least got the music out to us. Rhino has been sitting on Pickett's Atlantic output for years, releasing only I'm In Love, In Philadelphia and The Man And A Half compilation. This is an artist whose stature in soul cries out for his complete catalog being available.
Collectables has reissued the first five -- In The Midnight Hour, The Exciting Wilson Pickett, The Sound of Wilson Pickett, The Wicked Pickett and Midnight Mover -- and all are important. I'm In Love, In Philadelphia, Hey Jude, Right On and Don't Knock My Love complete the Atlantic discography. Of these 10, only Right On can be found lacking a bit, and even it has some wonderful moments. The unavailable Don't Knock My Love is a terrific wrapup on the label, and if Collectables or somebody else finally gets around to that one, maybe they can add his last Atlantic single: Funk Factory/One Step Away.
For now, get Midnight Mover. It's classic Pickett, a lot of it you've probably never heard. You'll be astounded by It's A Groove, I Found A True Love, Down By The Sea and Trust Me. How could these be gathering dust for nearly 40 years?

Bobby Womack's career is a book with many chapters; neither a bestseller nor a literary classic, it is nonetheless a consistently good read. The two-CD set, The Midnight Mover: The Bobby Womack Collection, only covers the middle chapters of that story, but those years (1968-76) brought the singer-guitarist-songwriter-producer his only Top 40 pop hits: "That's the Way I Feel About Cha," "Harry Hippie," "Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out," and "Lookin' for a Love." Womack is better known today for songs that were recorded by others: "It's All Over Now" by the Rolling Stones, "Woman's Gotta Have It" by the Neville Brothers, "I'm in Love" by Aretha Franklin, and 17 different songs by Wilson Pickett, most notably "I'm a Midnight Mover." All these recordings are superior to Womack's own versions (he is a robust gospel-soul singer but curiously lacking in understatement or big climaxes), but they are indicative of Womack's knack for telling a story to a very funky beat. All 8 of the above songs are included among the 44 tracks on the new anthology. What's missing from this anthology are the early chapters in Womack's story and the later chapters (his brilliant post-cocaine comeback albums, 1981's The Poet and 1984's The Poet II, his collaborations with Patti LaBelle and Wilton Felder, and his 1986 reunion with Moman, Womagic, the best album of his career). The Midnight Mover is the kind of anthology you shouldn't bother with until you have Otis Redding, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and Aretha Franklin covered. But if you have plenty of their recordings and still hunger for more classic R&B, Bobby Womack is a good next move. --Geoffrey Himes

Ultimate Soul, Gospel & R&B Vault.......2000-07-25
Every now and then a brilliant tribute album is released that celebrates the music of a certain artist, group or music style, like the album "Rhythm, Country & Blues" that was produced by Don Was. I think that I've found the perfect candidate for a tribute album like that: Bobby Womack. Just listen to the wealth of material that is available on this double CD, that could be recorded with a group of musicians that deeply respect Bobby and that know his songs inside-out (there are enough of them). Bobby contributed so much to albums of e.g. Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, as a singer, songwriter, arranger and guitarist that it would only be fair to shed a new light on his vast talents on an album with close friends that would like to honour him.
This Brother is BADD!.......2000-06-15
Bobby Womack is a Great Musical Genius that hasn't gotten his Fair Due.as a Writer,Producer,Instrumentalist&Vocalist MR.WOmack is One Of The Baddest Artists ever Too Rock A Studio. The Brother has alot of Soul.Very Essential Overview.
A Long-time friend & fans Pro's & Con's.......2000-03-27
Bobby I pray you read the following review: Being a personal friend of Mr. Womack's for the past 26-Years, I sincerly admit I am truly prejudice. All in all this 2-CD set of Bobby's early work is truly outstanding. However, I agree with the individual's review from Schenetady, N.Y. "Where was Daylight"?
All of his best - plus a few others.......2000-01-22
Womack is one of the most criminally forgotten soul men and listening to this collection will make that fact even more puzzling. He deserves far more attention than he's ever received, both from critics and the public.
That said, this two-CD set casts a wide net and ends up capturing more than just his best work: mediocre and even ill-advised choices (like "Sweet Caroline" - Womack covering Neil Diamond is as lackluster in reality as it sounds in theory) are in the minority for sure, but they do pop up here and there. They can be intrusive, but this is still an enjoyable set.
However, the Womack collection put out by EMI as part of its Heart of Soul Series in 1996 offers a briefer, but more finely distilled best-of. All the highpoints are there, plus an acoustic version of "Across 110th Street" (alongside the familiar version) that is excellent and not available on "Midnight Mover." That disk is also more interested in mood than chronology; its opening one-two punch of "Daylight" and "I Can't Understand It" (both of which are also here, of course) is irresistible. The title is "The Soul of Bobby Womack: Stop On By" and since I don't see it listed at Amazon, it may be hard to find. Well worth it, though.
Bobby Womack...B.O.B.B.Y.......1999-09-11
These 2 cds have been sitting in my system for over 2 years now...I aint even tired of listening to the brother preach and testify...this is a record that is definetly underrated. If you want to hear the truth about life...pick up the album...Bobby will break it down for you track by track...because Nobody Wants you when your down and out, and when your Across 110th Street...you might just feel some Jealous Love...comin at cha.
BOBBY IS THE GREATEST SOUL SINGER OF ALL TIMES!!!!
So if your thinking about picking up some Keith Sweat, or Ki ci and Jo JO...DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME...everything you want to hear from love to politics is waiting for you on a Midnight Mover.
Great Album man! I must have for collectors of 60's and 70's soul and r&b!!!!

Why does the best music get the least amount of airplay???.......2006-08-21
In an age where comercial play lists, non-talented studio produced superstars, and empty musical performances rule, BBC is a gift to us all. Its too bad that amazon does not have the samples of this CD avaliable because it is SMOKIN!!!! If you are a lover of true soul music with crafty and lyrical rhymes then you must have this one!!
Great Cd.......2006-07-27
Once again creativity is underrated. This band practically receives great reviews at every performance, yet minimal airplay. Great songs!
