Still proving that gothic metal need be mordant and humorless, New York's Type O returns with their sixth album of misanthropy, high drama and perversion with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Towering frontman Pete Steele is still the band's focal point and his lyrics are more grotesquely hilarious than ever. Musically, Life is pretty accessible, eschewing much of the brutal, thrashy heaviness of Type O's early material. "(We Were) Electrocute" is a sleek, electro-pop homage to 1980s New Romanticism that showcases Josh Silver's funeral synth lines. The adrenaline-fuelled soft-rock rush of "I Like Goils" comes on like Andrew WK in a vampire cape. And "Less than Zero" finds Type O Negative revisiting one of their more surprising influences, the Beatles, as a sitar cuts through the eerie gloom. --Louis Pattison

Another Great Return from Type O.......2007-07-21

This release from Type O Negative might not be their best to date but it's still nice to know they they still have the ability to write excellent Doom Metal music. This cd is filled with plenty of good to great tracks to keep the Type O fan entertained. It's nice to know they they still have been sticking relatively with their style. It might not be October Rust but it's still really good. Type O also has not forgotten to put jokes throught the album, this time though they did it more with song than filler. My favorite tracks on the cd are probably "Life Is Killing Me", "I Don't Wanna Be Me", "Anesthesia", and "How Could She?". Here's the rest of the album...

Type O Negative just seems to be making themselves a modern version of Black Sabbath with the type of gothic music they make and I love it. They managed to still put out another good album and any Type O Fan will enjoy most of the tracks on this one. Give it a whirl.

Type O Breathes 'Life' Into 'Killing Me'...4.5 stars..........2007-03-14

Type O Negative have been on the goth-metal scene for almost 20 years now, and they pratically invented the genre themselves and other countless bands (Lacuna Coil, HIM, Evanescence) have carried some influence from Type O. The Brooklyn based quartet's fifth album has some new sonic punch and you might even find yourself tapping your foot to some of the monstrous rock you'll find among LIFE IS KILLING ME's 15 tracks.

Opening cut "13" is rather like most of the beginnings of their other records, a mindless minute just to introduce the album, but still where would Type O be without their darkly undercut sarcasm? The next track, the manic-paced thrash of "I Don't Wanna Be Me", has to be one of the fastest and most thrilling Type O songs committed to compact disc. Johnny's drums bristle with intenstity, Josh's keyboard work provides some flourishes, Kenny's guitar work is awesome (the lead alone is incredible), and principle songwriter/vocalist/bassist Peter Steele remains firmly planted in the front, his roiling bass throbbing while his Bela Lugosi-esque vocals still remain the forefront. "(We Were) Electrocute" has a Beatles feel to it thanks to the sitar intregrated midway through the song; "The Dream Is Dead" is a recognizable fuzz-sludge attack; "A Dish Best Served Coldly" is a dark tale of revenge that seems creepy; and "I Like Goils" is the most hilarious of the bunch, again fast-paced like "Be Me", with Peter quite clear about where his sexuality lies, and that's with the other species of course (the lyrics alone just sell the song, check it out!) All the tracks, especially the sonic punch of the title track, retain all the Type O trademark's we've come to know and love since SLOW, DEEP AND HARD.

So while LIFE IS KILLING ME doesn't necessarily break substantial new ground, it does ring in yet another winner for Type O Negative. Boasting some crafty musicianship and their perverse, dark, and sullen sense of humor, Type O's 'KILLING ME' will not only satisfy their faithful, it might lure in some new admirers who might be curious why these four guys are known as "the kings of goth-metal".

Not THAT different, really.......2006-05-14

From the first notes of the very rock-ish I Don't Wanna Be Me one may say something has changed. What happened to our beloved gothic-doom-who-knows-what metal band Type O Negative? Almost high-paced songs, only two tracks clocking at more than seven minutes, no more indus/noisy interludes (apart from the end of I Don't Wanna Be Me), and basic verse-chorus structures. Add to all this that even if guitars still show a slightly raspy sound, all distortion seems to have been banished, the overall production being rather clear. Is TON trying to reach a wider audience?

But actually by listening a bit more carefully there's nothing really new there. More than selling out, this album may well be, on the contrary, a return to the band's roots. The punk-influenced songs are back, with I Like Goils or the hilarious cover Angry Inch, and at some points one almost feels like having gone back to the times of the two first albums, only with cleaner sound.

Similarly, two other main influences for TON had always been Black Sabbath and The Beatles, and indeed through years the band has covered several songs of both acts, so again it's not astonishing to find parts reminiscent of these bands. Less Than Zero or How Could She may be the songs which exhibit both influences most blatantly: The Beatles bring the sitar, the psychedelic vibe and sometimes even the singing style, Black Sabbath brings the riffs. This last band indeed seems to have inspired most of the tracks here, some parts almost sounding like literal rip-offs, what anyone who loves doom metal a single bit won't certainly complain about. Actually TON seem to have renewed with their melting of different genres in an album as well as in a single song, what sometimes leads to quite messy tracks (e.g. How Could She).

Slow, oppressive tunes have not been forgotten though, with the wonderful A Dish Better Served Coldly, reminiscent of the Bloody Kisses era. And even if titles like Life Is Killing Me, Anesthesia or The Dream Is Dead are (slightly) higher-paced, that doesn't prevent them from being perfect pieces of depression, with their deep down-tuned guitars and as-sick-as-ever backing keyboards. Lyrically, after the a bit far-fetched World Coming Down, the guys seem to once again go back to their traditional themes like deceived love (A Dish..., Anesthesia, The dream is Dead...), while humorous tracks have not been forgotten, like when Peter pokes fun about homosexuals (I Like Goils) or transsexuals (Angry Inch). Even if some songs seem to approach more "serious" questions like euthanasia (Life Is Killing Me), overall there is no revolution here as well.

Unfortunately the band also renewed with its long tradition of fillers, which is a pity as the album is, as usual, overall good. Todd's Ship God (Above All things), (We were) Electrocute and IYDKMIGTHTKY (Gimme That) have for them their hilariously stupid titles, but it's the best part of all of these songs. Apart from this they are mostly unnoticeable, too long for what they are and, in the case of IYDKMIGTHTKY, particularly repetitive. The very pop-ish Nettie shows an uselessly whiny Peter Steele, and Drunk in Paris is only a funny instrumental intro to The Dream is Dead so it doesn't really count.

Granted, Life Is Killing Me may be the catchiest Type O Negative album, but it's still not selling out - it sounds more like the logical evolution and summary of the band's whole career. As such, it definitely constitutes the best introduction to it, even if it may stand a tiny step below October Rust or World Coming Down.

Back to their Metal Days?.......2005-11-22

I bought this cd after Dl'ing several of the tracks first. It seems that in my humble opinion that Type is moving away from the melodic stuff that turned me on to their music to begin with,(Bloody Kisses, October Rust, Least Worst Of), and their moving to the industrial metal sound again. Let me say that I did enjoy several tracks on this disc, but it was a 25% like, 75% just ok for me on this one.

Guys, It wasn't broke, don't fix it.

What can one say about Type O with all the reviews contained herein?
I am not a Type O "Groupee", therefore I buy & review the material for what it is.

Seems like once a band creates a following, certain fans become somewhat "positive biased" to whatever material the band produces. Even if the material is vague, un-artistic or manufactured.

GOOD PARTY ALBUM-HOWEVER...
Good party album, can become "dry" at times. None of the songs really "jump out at you" except "I Don't Wanna Be Me" might show some intellegent songwriting.

INDUSTRIAL-GOTH?
Definitely NOT as hardcore industrial & gothic as some of these previous reviews may lead you to think. May be more of a "manufactured rock" album. A mild & refined "commercial" forte.

Nonetheless, still a good one to toss into the changer.

Type O Negative Makes A Comeback!.......2004-05-21

The extra tracks really make this disc a good reason for old school Type O fans to come out of the shadows. A far cry from the commercially pleasing "October Rust," but more depth and variety than "World Coming Down," this disc is a long awaited gem. Again, Type O Negative preserves their neo-gothic sound while mixing in elements of metal, rock and new age/industrial.
Notable tracks include "Nettie," "Anesthesia" and "Drunk In Paris." The highlight of the second disc (or of the whole album) is the "Suspended In Dusk" track from the import version of "Bloody Kisses," and the "Out Of The Ashes" mix of "Blood/Fire" from the Mortal Kombat Soundtrack. These two are a must have for Type O fans, conveniently added to this two disc set, as well as the spine-chilling intro to the second disc. Bravo for Type O!

If you folks are anything like me, the lack of "good" new music since the flip of the millennium has been disheartening. I will spare you my thoughts on the relative drivel of new-bubble-gum-pop-crap that has been produced of late, and get to the topic at hand. Type O Negative is one of my three favorite bands of all time, and their new release does not disappoint. While not as revolutionary as "Bloody Kisses" or as timeless as "October Rust," the boyz from Brooklyn did a respectable job putting together the new release, "Life Is Killing Me." The trademark Type O Sound, with slow sexual undertones, thick-layered harmonies, and hypnotic yet catchy melodies, permeate the disc. With any new Type O release, the fine wine-like quality (no pun intended) must not be forgotten. In short, you need to listen to the entire disc 10 times through, at least once with a phat bottle of thick red wine set to candles, before the true weight becomes apparent. Bottom line: purchase this disc, get a bottle of Merlot, get DRONK and enjoy! True fans, and neophytes alike will not be disappointed.

For reference, I will rate all previous Type O releases before making some comments on certain tracks from the new release.

Slow Deep and Hard: 2 of 10 - not really true Type O, IMO.
Origin of the Feces: 4 of 10 - two awesome songs, the rest sub-par
Bloody Kisses: 10 of 10 - in a word, revolutionary
October Rust: 10 of 10 - a must have in any music library
World Coming Down: 6 of 10 - some great tracks, some lacked focus

Odd lyrical content. Good ambient feel that makes ya wanna take on the world. Thick harmonies. October Rust 'esque track. Type O Rocks!

5. I Like Goils

Filler. Very explicit lyrics. 2:35 seconds . . . cummon boys. Don't waste my time. Gimme another bar of Todd's Ship Gods or something.

6. ...A Dish Better Served Coldly

Bring on the depression. Here's a good track to jam too whilst under the influence of your "escape." Driving drums, Driving vocals, 7:13 seconds. That's what I'm talking about. But, what's up with the abrupt ending?

7. How Could She?

Too "World Coming Down" for my taste. If you are a fan of the WCD disc you will like this track. I do like the 'reprise' though. It takes them 5 min to get into it . . . but hey, at least they got there. Overall, OK track. Would not be included on a greatest hits disc.

8. Life Is Killing Me

Get ready for the hammer to drop on 'yer' jewels, cuz "LIFE IS KILLING ME!" Here is a fresh track, epic in variation, epic in feeling, signature track. Roll down the windows, crank up the 8-track, and floor that 1.8 liter 4-banger! Cuz this track will get you a speeding ticket or four. Worth the price of admission.

9. Nettie

Track starts off with Peter singing lower than he has in any previous recordings. I mean wow, dude's got gonad for days. Great vocal showcase for Peter.

10. (We Were) Electrocute

Blah, Blah, Blah. Nothing special. "We Were Electrocute" ? . . . where ya going with this one boys . . . . better pop another lithium.

11. IYDKMIGTHTKY (Gimme That)

This song is a prime example why I didn't rate the disc higher. It's not bad, listenable, but not great. You just keep waiting for the rump to kick in . . . to no avail.

12. Angry Inch

I think peter had a "Carnivore" flashback on this one. 3:30 of too much "speed metal" crap. This one should have never made it past the mixing board. In fact, I'm not sure they even ran it through the mixing board. Noise.

13. Anesthesia

Ambient. Heavy on the synth. See my comments for track 11. Listenable, but not great.

14. Drunk In Paris

1:27 track. Instrumental Filler.

15. The Dream Is Dead

Cheezy "October Rust" feel. Average track. I have come to expect something a bit more epic from the Brooklyn Gang as an ending to an otherwise decent disc. A bit fluffy boyz.

You weren't expecting TON to digress were you? Peter's musical genius deepens with every album. This new work is not as dark; and their dark songs from the past were some of their best. However, with this new progressive and brighter instrumental quality (interjected with the "same old" dark "Type O" lyrics,) the band seems to be taking a more passive approach to their fatalistic views, as if, like the album states, Life is Killing Them. This album is like the others in that it will not get old. I believe that this is their second best album; preceeded by October Rust! Enjoy.

Fan of Type O so Take this Review with a Grain of Salt.......2003-06-28

While not their best album ever, this Type O CD stays pretty true to the form we fans have come to know and love. The familiar "light-goth" sound that they provide, along with familiar tonal qualities, make this CD a must for any Type O fan. For newcomers to the band, I would reccommend Bloody Kisses first, then progress to this album. But a great CD nonetheless.

Better Than Ever.......2003-06-26

Now here is a band that deserves a lot more credit and regognition. This is by far Type O's best album since Bloody Kisses. Its a step in a whole new , less depressing , more rocking direction. Musically , they have got to be one of the best metal bands out there. Peter is definetly one of the greatest , unsung vocalists of all time. All in all , this album rocks. Not one bad track. Buy it!

Type O Negative is the death metal band for anyone who doesn't like death metal. They're dark, edgy, oddly comedic, and make great metal-ish music. Good album, falls short of October Rust greatness.

Good old cynical, tongue in cheek TON!.......2005-06-11

I am totally, utterly, hopelessly in love with TON. Ahh...Josh's amazing sixties-sounding keyboard that can turn sepulchral at the drop of a hat, Pete's booming basso voice, Kenny's whiplash licks and Johnny's dynamic presence... But above all their scathing, vitriolic, black sense of humor, which, if you ask me, very few people "get". October Rust and World Coming Down are my absolute favorites, the first being their sad and romantic masterpiece, smelling of fog, goodbyes, and burning wood (Pete's favorite, as the fans know), the other one of the most amazing albums ever on the utter hell that life has become, paralleled, in my opinion, only by certain tracks on The Who By Numbers and by Bowie's horrifying visions in Diamond Dogs (no coincidence about the fact that the "culprits" are the same: alcohol and cocaine addiction). Life is Killing Me (masterful title) is, in my opinion, a "bipolar" album, containing hilarious, depressing, venomous, nostalgic, and tragic tracks. Anesthesia, probably the album's highest point, gives me shivers with the "I don't feel anything" crescendo. Being a huge fan of this often misunderstood, wonderfully original band, and seeing the latest news from their camp, with the hoax of Pete's untimely death, the change of label and a mysterious new album that seems to take much longer than it should have, I can only hope that the last track on this album "The Dream is Dead" is not prophetic.

having seen them live 12 times and getting and having every one there disks in order they came out; this is the best one yet. if you like Type O you will love this. If you love Type O you will love them even more. just can't say enough great things about Life is Killing Me.

5 stars, even with two songs deleted...........2003-06-18

**This review is intended do give the specifics on the EDITED VERSION of "Life Is Killing Me."***

When it comes to edited CDs, they went the easy route with this one. The first thing you must know is that the edited version only has 13 tracks, as opposed to 15 tracks on the normal version. The songs "I Like Goils" and "Angry Inch" have been removed altogether, rather than being edited for language. Of the remaining songs, only "Less Than Zero" is unfit for radio airplay. Thankfully, the editing on that one song was done very smoothly, removing the objectionable words completely while leaving the backround music intact. Type O Negative songs have had some sloppy "bleeping" edits in the past, so I was pleased to find that the edits here were much more smooth and unintrusive.

And as far as what was left IN, here's a general overview for the conscientious buyer. The title track leaves in the word "a**," and the edited track "Less Than Zero" leaves in the word "p*ss" (although the other "worse" words in that song have been edited, as mentioned earlier). There are no objectionable words beyond that. There are definite thematic elements, however, that may not be for the squeamish. Edited or not, this album focuses heavily on death and anguish. There are songs that examine revenge and suicide, so be prepared.

This is just to let people know what they're getting. I, for one, loved this album and thought that all the themes were dealt with in a beautifully artistic way. Type O Negative has a mastery of melody that never gets in the way of their heavy metal stylings, and they're in rare form on Life Is Killing Me.

That's basically it for the edited version. So if you're one who buys edited versions, make sure you realize that you're only getting one song that's actually "edited," per se, and you'll be missing out on two songs. It's STILL an amazing album, STILL worthy of five stars... just know what your getting.
