There's a long tradition of artists banding together for a noble cause, but--needless to say--good intentions are no guarantee of good art. Fortunately, the twain do meet and the project even succeeds with creative flair in this compilation. It kicked off the Red Hot AIDS Benefit series back in 1990 and in fact launched its own sort of minigenre, including theme albums devoted to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a wide swath of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to its message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Here, the legacy of this ultra-sophisticated, closeted master of the popular song from the era of the "lost generation" is presented as a source of rejuvenating inspiration. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers. There's an occasional miscalculation (Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop's didactic "updating" of Porter's bon vivant wit doesn't compare well with the original), but moments of stunning fusion abound (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Instead of getting lost in translation, Red Hot + Blue adds a whole new dimension to the art of swellegance. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Red Hot & Blue: A Tribute to Cole Porter.......2007-07-25

Awesome CD, used to have the cassette tape. We decided we had waited long enough to here this grouping of music again....so bought the CD. Especially as it was sold as a money raiser for AIDS. Wonderful songs, fab groups singing them. We love it.

4 out of 5 stars red hot and sometimes, not!.......2007-05-14

this is the red hot that started the whole affair. this collection of cole porter covers was recorded as a way to let the world know that the music industry cared about aids awareness and raising money to bring about a cure.

the representation of artists is a cross section of who was hot in 1990 with few exceptions (prince, janet jackson, madonna and cyndi lauper immediately comes to mind--madonna would pay her dues soon though). some of them are gloriously up to doing the cole porter songs justice.

for example, lisa stansfield's 'down in the depths' is elegantly jazzy and a perfect showcase for her sweet honeyed mezzo. and, kd lang can do wrong working her way through 'so in love'. it's brilliant. as is annie lennox's 'ev'ry time we say goodbye'.

others bring their stamp to the songs and make it happen for the pop market. u2's 'night and day' is a great success, david byrne takes 'don't fence me in' on a great romp and fine young cannibals take 'love for sale', which has an unshakeable identity with women from billie holiday to aretha franklin, and makes it a randy boy-toy cruise that porter would have loved!

now, while sinead o'connor and iggy pop made be the last two singers one would expect to take on cole porter, o'connor's whispery boop-a-doop approach to 'you do something to me' is a definite change of pace and pop just says 'so what!?' he and debbie harry give 'well, did you evah?' the punked out once over that again would have tickled porter to no end.

now, if he wouldn't lose his sense of humor on some of the rest, as a listener i do. jody watley has one of the toughest tunes to do in 'after you--who?'. and a sense of humor or a little help from elton john might have saved her. as is her apporach is too studied and careful. and i don't get salif keita's 'begin the beguine'. this is one of the songs that needed to be sung because of its lusicious melody. and i like rap as much as the next person but i have to concede the point that porter's lyrics don't need reconception as raps.

4 out of 5 stars A CD I still listen to regularly after years.......2007-02-19

This collection of Cole Porter songs performed by different contemporary artists came out in the early 90's as a fundraiser to benefit AIDS research.

The artists have different styles, so you'll probably like some tracks much more than others. I think they're uniformly good with some standouts, such as Annie Lennox's Everytime We Say Goodbye.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting tribute developing now it's own classic status........2006-07-18

The beautiful elements of all Porter's work are that the songs he penned are elegant, witty, refreshingly verbose, timeless and can, in effect, be sung by anyone to anyone. They are loving, sexy and sexless at once; which reveals much about the great man's character and genius.
The songs and artists here are a sound spread of genre. Sung in either classic form or as refreshing reworkings. On the whole it works well with a few unfortunate exceptions.
It is well worth adding to a discerning collection. My personal favourites are those which by and large retain their classic quality, Annie Lennox, K D Lang and Lisa Stansfield do beautiful interpretations of their chosen songs. Andy Bell and David Byrne add twists which work to great effect. It is a certainty that the album is developing it's own classic status as time moves on, it was origianlly released in 1990. The perfect tribute at the time and a mark of how far we have come in an effort to fight HIV. The songs howevr in my opinion need little tinkering or adjustment since they were and are beautiful, it is a shame some of the artists chose to rework certain songs so heavily.

4 out of 5 stars FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS THE BEST SONG.......2006-05-21

I BOUGHT THIS CD FOR ONE SONG AND ONE SONG ONLY.
LOVE FOR SALE BY THE FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS. THE CANNIBALS
NOT ONLY DO JUSTICE TO COLE PORTER'S LEGACY, THEIR PERFORMANCE
ILLUSTRATES PORTER'S SONGWRITING BRILLIANCE. ROLAND GIFT NAILS THE SONG'S MOODS AND THE ACCOUSTIC TOUCH IS ON TARGET FOR THIS SONG. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE CANNIBALS ONLY MADE A COUPLE ALBUMS, BUT LOVE FOR SALE IS ARGUABLY THEIR FINEST SONG, AND REASON ENOUGH TO BUY THIS CD.

4 out of 5 stars Five-star artist and five-star release gets a 4-star CD.......2007-02-25

OK. I haven't listened to the American Beat version yet - it just came in the mail 10 minutes ago, but it's interesting that the CD cover DOES list the Ian Hunter Band members, but there's no liner notes whatsoever in the single gatefold-like CD insert - just song titles and songwriters. This seems to be the exact opposite of the Import (UK version), which people say has liner notes by Ian Hunter but no mention at all of who was playing with Hunter that night during recording.
Also, the American Beat version (U.S.) shows pics of Hunter's band on the back of the CD insert, with Mick Ronson apparently cropped out of the frame (he is seen standing next to Hunter onstage.) Odd, being that this was a Hunter-Ronson release, and Ronson's such wonderful contribution and importance to Hunter's music in the 1970s. They should have featured a shot of Ronson in the booklet (he is seen on the back of the CD jewel case with Hunter, in a small, blue photo.) Oh well, at least the CD is finally here in print in the States.
(The Mott reissues last year are good, especially "Mott," despite a horn goof near the beginning of "All the Way From Memphis." Also pick up the double, 30th anniversary import of "Mott the Hoople Live." It smokes most bands out of the water.

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.--Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars the "point a" of Elliot........2007-07-24

4.46 stars.

for anybody who even half-way enjoys the one-man-and-a-guitar stylings of pre-"figure 8" Elliot Smith, go ahead and make that collection complete by snapping up a copy of "roman candle". i bought this album for that reason alone and wound-up very much enjoying it.

the opener, from whence the album takes its title, is enough to justify the purchase price, but that's not to say that the rest of the album is anything to simply gloss over. Elliot fans who, like myself, became such because of the "good will hunting" soundtrack will be happy to have a familiar friend along the way in the form of "no name no. 3". also, the sinister swell that "last call" delves into as it comes to a close is pretty ded-gum neat, so be sure to check that out as well.

i only rate this album a 4 instead of a 5 because i DO NOT wish to give the impression that i find it to be on par with "Elliot Smith", so if you are trying to decide between the two of them, hit that other one first. however, if after injesting that one you like it as much as the rest of the Elliot-lovin' free world does, be sure to get ye back out into thine music-gettin' landscape to procure a copy of "roman candle" for yo'self as well. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-04-17

This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-03-13

i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05

This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers.......2006-07-16

Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.

4 out of 5 stars WARNING: MISSING A SONG!!!.......2007-06-17

I bought this CD as well as all the other available Robin Trower two-fers as a cheap way to replace all my old Trower LPs. However I discovered that the song "The Shout" from Victims Of The Fury is missing, apparently sacrificed due to time constraints caused by the double offering. It is one of the best songs on the original album, and I believe it was one of the "single" releases. A glaring omission! If they really had to kill a tune, I would rather have seen "One In A Million" get the axe. Other than that, everything is great! I have always loved VOTF, and slowly but surely the tunes from Caravan have grown on me.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Trower.......2007-01-04

Having two Robin Trower lps on one CD is convenient, however, the song listings do not indicate which selections belongs to which CD. The two lps show two contrasting styles of the gifted power trio that formed Trower's band in his later period.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best......but still a good double.......2006-10-12

This package has the last two albums recorded by the band with the wonderful James Dewar on vocals. The first, Caravan to Midnight I found disappointing. The album represented a change in direction and in my opinion not for the better. Robin Trower admitted to spending more time on musical arrangements than previously and although the guitar work is still excellent, the funkier sound leaves me a bit cold. Victims of the Fury is a welcome return to the more familiar power trio line-up (Rustee Allen played bass on Caravan to Midnight and In City Dreams), and has Robin back to his raw sounding best. I rate this as the band's best since For Earth Below.

5 out of 5 stars Robin Trower at his best!!.......2006-03-22

Robin Trower has a lot of albums, This is one of his best.
A great mixture of rock and soul... well worth the money!!

4 out of 5 stars reminds me of Judas Priest.......2007-05-23

I'm looking through the MSG stuff on Amazon because "Rock Bottom" has been in my head since I heard Tesla perform it at the New York State Fair this past fall (2006). I've watched various "Rock Bottom" videos on YouTube, and they impress me to no end. I know Amazon's short sound clips can never give full justice to songs, but almost every clip I heard had me thinking of Judas Priest. It would be nice if the clips featured the best of MSG, but they don't. Don't rely on the sound clips. Check out MSG on YouTube or myspace for a better representation. MSG rocks when you hear the full context of their songs. This isn't intended to knock Amazon in any way, since they aren't to blame for the quality of their sound clips. (I usually buy through Amazon.) Other online sites offer the same clips. Hopefully there will come a day when better clips are available. For now, though, I will check out myspace and youtube, and gladly buy anything that turns me on. My first MS purchase will have to be something with "Rock Bottom" on it. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Built to Destroy.......2007-01-21

The final of the classic MSG line-up of Gary Barden, Chris Glen, Michael Schenker, and Ted Mckenna(Cozy-RIP-was the best but he liked moving around) As with most bands that do well and have a distinct sound, much of it is found in the lead vocals. David Lee Roth said it right " I am Van Halen" and with MSG, Gary Barden is no exception, he is "MSG". True there is no way to replace guitarist like Schenker or Eddie Van Halen, but the voice is up front and sets the pace for the song.

Built to Destroy (Imported version) maintains that "MSG" sound but explores the popular rock scene of the times, a little more keyboard with Andy Nye. Gary's vocals are right on and Michael's guitar work is brilliant, especially on "Nemo" and Systems Failing.

This is the American version where the entire album was remixed to push it on the charts. As a dedicated early days MSG fan, this mix gets further away from that original heavy european rock sound of MSG. I rank the american version the lowest in the Barden era. Just way too produced. As a former audio engineer, the mix in a way sounds "amatuerish" In addition, I'll never understand why they ever brought in Derek St Holmes in for vocals on "That little devil" - truly a mistake, Gary's version is far superior. He should have stuck with Ted Nugent.

The cover shot is fantastic and a great indication of what Michael would like to have done to the record executives heads that were controlling the bands work. The back cover is a beautiful example of MSG, small stage, beautiful girls and rockin' music.

If you are a first time MSG listener, go for MSG and MSGII, look for the live EP for the original MSG, it has Armed and Ready and Into the Arena live. That was my first introduction to MSG and is "The sound"

Get Built to Destroy after you're hooked, then you will be able to find those sounds from the early days throughout this album.

Cheers - Mike

2 out of 5 stars Dated sound, stellar Schenker.......2005-10-20

My first introduction to Michael Schenker was through this album back in 1984. Listening back to it now, the instrumental track, "Captain Nemo", and the guitar solo to "Systems Failing" are still stellar examples of his classical-tinged blues rock playing. And while, personally, its a fine nostalgic visit to listen to the album again, its woefully evident now that the lyrics are weak and the overall slick production has that pre-1985 hair-&-spandex rock feel. Most telling of this is just how much keyboard there is on the album. A nod towards riding the "rock synth" fad that followed Van Halen's release of "Jump" of of their "1984" release, perhaps? If anything, one can always skip this one and pick up the live follow-up "Live at Hammersmith Odeon". Most of "Built to Destroy"'s tracks are on there, as well as a few others from other earlier releases. If your're looking for a better listenable intro to Schenker, get either the 1st or 2nd McAuley-Schenker albums.

One interesting note is that my CD, while it does not contain the original mixes, has "Rock Will Never Die" retitled "Walk the Stage". Having owned the recording on cassette back in 1984, and borrowed the vinyl LP then as well, that retitling made me do a 2nd look!

2 out of 5 stars Half baked effort.......2004-12-10

This is not the best Schenker album, but still has a lot of his trademark guitar licks, melodic solos, expert guitar playing and some good vocals by Barden (even containing his trademark bad, I mean BAD, silly and useless lyrics).

The trouble lies in the bad production. It is too polished, what would have not been a big problem had it not sounded so lifeless, lacking punch, lacking rawness.

Anyway, for a Schenker fan, it's obligatory acquisition.

3 out of 5 stars Someone Screwed this mix up........2004-02-10

This is a revamped version of the original release from '83. It is slicker, but that's it. They cut short some of the guitar solos. The best example is Red Sky, which was called "Red Sky at Night" on the Chrysalis release. This was one of my favorite Schenker songs, but when I listened to it I could'nt believe how it was butchered. This BGO version just doesn't sound like the original at all. Skip this one and find the original.

Album Description

This is dark instrumental surf music. Reminiscent of classic surf artists, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones and The Ventures but with a darker modern twist. Murder On Beaver Street shifts between different styles within the surf genre. For example, the fast picking style of Dick Dale, the spaghetti western feel of Ennio Morricone, and the primitive rock and roll style of Link Wray.

4 out of 5 stars Pay No Attention To The Song Titles!.......2005-09-03

Overall this is well-played instrumental surf music of a gentle nature. I have no idea where the group came up with song titles like "The Mummy's Curse," "Shallow Grave," or "Death, Death, Death." There is nothing eerie or ominous about any of it. In fact this CD could be played in the background of a quiet get-together with friends and set a very nice ambience. It is worth owning but don't buy it expecting music in the "horror surf" genre.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!.......2004-06-08

This CD is great. If you are looking for a different type of music other than the same old pop music out these days, pick up this CD!!! You can feel the soul in the instruments these guys play and you WILL be caught dancing or jumping around!!! This is the best surf I have heard!!!

5 out of 5 stars Their Finest Work.......2000-05-04

Made in 1972 this album is rated, by many fans, as Man's finest. While the second song, "Keep on Crinting" is not so well remembered, the others, "C'mon", "Bananas" and "Life on the Road" are firm favourites with fans and even today, almost thirty years on, it is hard to imagine a live set without "C'mon and Bananas".

The mood is mellow, laid back and irreverent. The music always seems to be on the way somewhere progressing rather than repeating.

Throughout the album, the guitar of Micky Jones works well with the keyboards of Phil Ryan as they trade lead melodies. This was the latter's first album with the band and it is remarkable how well the whole group fits together.

"C'mon" and "Keep on Crinting" almost seem to be a single piece and they start the tradition of the band to perform a variety of extended versions of the former track. "Bananas" and "Life on the Road" are more distinct as songs but they fit well into the mood of the album. The lyrics are generally upbeat and light hearted with no attempt by the band to take themselves particularly seriously.

If you are new to the band, this album really should be your first purchase. If you are an established fan that this is an essential part of your collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......1999-04-17

The first "real" Man album, Be Good sets their sound, which was basically Grateful Dead-ish jams lightened with some British progressivisms. The instrumental workouts here are quite nice. If you like this, you may want to try Slow Motion or Back to the Future next.

3 out of 5 stars bossa nova lounge.......2002-05-07

Individual songs here are refreshing in that they are not the same 20 bossa nova classics we've been hearing for the last 40 years, however, as a collection this album feels really light. OK, for bubble-gum background music; not great for serious listening.
