Versions gathers 18 Thievery Corporation remixes from across a music spectrum that only the most eclectic could love. The vinyl-popping digital duo embraces '60s psychedelia with the Doors and '60s kitsch with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. They put them all into the mixmaster, usually adding the downtempo jazzy electro-lounge beats upon which they built their early reputation. Alpert's "Lemon Tree," taken from the recent Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped, is a vintage noirish mood piece, but this doesn't always work. Fear of Pop's "In Love" becomes a tedious vamp, and the Doors' "Strange Days" is a missed opportunity squandered on a Cagian "indeterminacy" moment, like two bands in different rooms. But the Thievery formula usually works wonders on even the most unlikely material. There's an Indian twang to many of these mixes, including the Middle East-via-Bombay grooves of Trans-Global Underground, the Indian singing of Ustad Sultan Khan, and the fragile sitar of Anoushka Shankar. Even the tunes that aren't Eastern, like Nouvelle Vague's Euro-lounge "This Is Not a Love Song," get the full Indian treatment with droning tambouras and tabla percussion. I wonder what it says that no matter whether they're using Astrud Gilberto, Sarah McLachlan, or the Doors as source material, it all comes out sounding like Thievery Corporation. --John Diliberto

Versions.......2007-05-09
Awesome CD. Great music to work to, party to, be creative to. just about anything
Consistently Excellent!!!.......2007-03-09
It's nice to finally have many of these remixes in one place, including many I had not heard before. Despite these songs being from many different genres and times, they flow together like liquid butter! The new Thievery song "Originality" is a slamming reggae jam that will liven up your party in the coming months. Imagine today's young people getting down to The Doors, courtesy of Thievery's "Strange Days" remix. Elsewhere, there are plenty of songs to spin, no matter your mood. This is not just some knockoff package till Thievery can deliver another studio album - this is a full fledged musical work!
On another note, it's nice to know that Thievery is embracing the beauty of album packaging, with another first rate package here to go along with "The Cosmic Game" and "Richest Man in Babylon." Even though CD sales are going the way of the passenger pigeon, it's nice to browse through such an elaborate package, which can then enhance the entire listening experience.
Not their best, but a regular in my playlist.......2007-01-30
Thoroughly enjoy this cd, which I can play during a variety of moods, events, or tasks. I especially enjoy placing individual songs in my playlists related to specific moods. Love Thievery and ESL!
Not the best, but Good easy listening.......2007-01-11
Not the best, but some great tracks are there. A biy too ethnic.

Washington, D.C.'s Thievery Corporation purvey a very mellow, deliberately international mixture of sounds that might be called "lounge music"--not in the kitschy sense, but in the sense of a laid-back local bar (much like the one the duo happens to run) with no dance floor. Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are professed admirers of Brazilian music, and they're determined to inject as much warmth into electronic music as possible. The Mirror Conspiracy is quite a musical travelogue, starting in Jamaica with "Treasures." This dubby opening track, which features vocalist Brother Jack, is quite reminiscent of the start of Swayzak's Himawari. Next up is "Le Monde," a quiet, wah-wah-inflected song featuring a chanteuse named Lou Lou. She reappears later on the somewhat more uptempo "Shadows of Ourselves," which, despite the title, is also sung in French. "The Hong Kong Triad" sounds like a tip of the hat to Shaft-styled soundtrack music. Elsewhere, it's off to India for two sitar-flavored tracks with a similarly laidback groove that gets a bit closer to techno, one of which, "Lebanese Blonde" (hash? a woman?), has been released as a single. Brazil gets its due on the densely percussive "Air Batucada," the more bossa nova-like "So Com Voce," and an instrumental titled "Samba Tranquille." Fans of this style are sure to be pleased. --Bob Bannister

Thievery Bliss.......2007-05-20
I typically respect peoples' opinions regarding reviews. However, I have to take exception to the "alla fishkop no.1" review. The review talks about the lack of originality and the "same as 90% of the chill out around". I notice you don't share any thoughts about other Thievery albums you own in comparison to this one...Oh I know, you probably don't own any other albums by them...that's why!!! This is a definitive album for a genre that is filled with wannabees that try to cash in on few talented people in the business. The reason why it "sounds like a lot of other chill albums out there", is because this album has been around since 2000 and has been a benchmark for all other artists since then trying to capture the essence of this sound. Thievery has been spinning quality tracks since the late 90's and will continue to dominate this genre for a long time. I see that you're from NY....chances are, you probably think Louie Devito spinning at the Sound Factory is the sh**!!. Don't give reveiews on music you don't know poseur!!
Stealing Time For Reflection.......2007-04-12
If you come to Thievery Corporation expecting anything other than downbeat dubs and unruffled rhythms, expect to be disappointed. This D.C.-based duo of Garza and Hilton are experts at sampling sounds from all over the world (primarily India, Brazil, France, and Jamaica) and building out of them a lounge ambience that is deep and drool-worthy.
You could say that the songs are derivative, evidence of artistic talent used to trace old drawings, but in an age of sampling, loops, remixes and homages, "derivative" seems like less and less of an insult (these guys, anyway, revel in it, if you haven't noticed the name of their group). These songs are, everyone one of them, brilliant in a warm, enveloping, devilish way, music for secrets. These are the songs to which hair is tucked behind ears, candles flicker on dull veneers, hands -- under tables -- are placed gently on foreign knees. Its the kind of album that makes you believe anyone, listening to it, could be a good dancer if they just let the notes take over.
The Mirror Conspiracy brings to the sometimes harsh light of electronica a honey-hot glow. The boys in Thievery Corporation aren't trying to pull off any acrobatic stunts or massive implosions of sound, but they do execute some dizzying and hypnotic sleight-of-hand. It's a dreamwave of an album, a great score for seduction, and the tender taunt of temptation. Give Thievery Corporation a chance, and they may just steal your soul.
Suprisingly dissapointed..........2007-04-12
I've purchased this CD based on huge popularity of previous albums on radio, good reviews on Amazon, plus this album always comes up as one of the bestsellers in Chill/Jazz/Electronica genre sections, of which I'm a big fan. Well, I was highly dissapointed after listening for 10-15 minutes, and could barely go through the end. They are not bad, it's good music, but nothing special. The sound and beats are too familiar from 90% of other Chill bands. I did not sense any originality, direction, and movement in any piece. Every piece flows and finishes the same way it starts. Wallpaper, wallpaper, wallpaper. The bottom line is that I've heard this million times before. Even vocals don't help this album. I wouldn't spin this album even if I owned a lounge.
Still my favorite.......2007-04-05
If you bought this album because "Lebanese Blonde" from the "Garden State" soundtrack is on it, congradulations! I first picked this up in 2000, and was blown away! I have bought all thier albums since. This is an excellent album by Thievery Corporation. "The Mirror Conspiracy" still has a special place in my musical collection. This is, to me an album in a classic sense. Meant to be listened to from beginning to end. Incorporating elements of Dub, Reggae, Indian, Bossa Nova makes for an eclectic listening experience. You should put this on for your next coctail party.
Superb chill-out music.......2007-03-16
This album is an essential part of my music library. It is a collection of some of the finest, most tasteful down-tempo music out there to date. Definitely a must-have.

There's always been a psychedelic edge to Rob Garza and Eric Hilton's Thievery Corporation project. 2000's Mirror Conspiracy is a downtempo classic precisely because of its druggy expansiveness; sober listeners and saucer-eyed trippers alike could find common ground. Similarly esoteric and nocturnal, The Cosmic Game floats around the room on a wave of mystic beats and guest vocals from Perry Farrell, The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and David Byrne. Garza and Hilton are less devoted to non-electronic sources here than they were on The Richest Man in Babylon or The Outernational Sound, though their fascination with dub rhythms and world music remains intact. A fair amount of armchair travel is involved as you go from the late, late-night, beach-club-in-Jamaica sound of "Amerimacka," to the Brazilian percussion of "Ambicion Eterna" and "Pela Janela." But more than anything, the record feels like a return to the duo's own ethereal sonic roots. It's a nice blend of their music over the last half-decade for longtime fans, and a hazy glide down the rabbit hole for newcomers. --Matthew Cooke
Album Description
The most fully-realized Thievery set to date, their fourth studio record packs an all-star punch, with cameos by FLAMING LIPS, PERRY FARRELL, DAVID BYRNE, and more of their usually lovely futuristic bossa/lounge/downtempo sound. Check out ThieveryCorporation.com to launch soon.

Progressive decline in creativity by T.C........2007-05-24
It seems that since the Mirror Conspiracy, all these guys do is turn out endless variations of the same played-out sound
From the Cosmos.......2007-02-11
Only one word fully describes this album: Wow. Where do they get the inspiration, the creativity, the magic? Who knows. Just be thankful that they keep making beautiful and innovative music. TC just keeps getting better with each new album. If you thought RMIB was original, wait till you hear the collage of sounds compiled onto this tapestry of music. Some standout tracks: Warning Shots, Heart's a Lonely Hunter, Amerimacka, and the knock-out The Supreme Illusion. Holy cow, this song will floor you. It's almost too good.
If you own any other TC album and you like it, go out immediately and but The Cosmic Game. It's even better.
Good music, but hidden.......2006-10-25
Certainly a good solid album, and worth the listen from beggining to finish. Found myself really liking most of the tracks, but after a few listens there are some repepetitive elements that are hard on the ear. On most, if not all, of the tracks there is a heavy triplet delay effect that becomes extremly annoying after a few minutes. There is a lot of good music in this album, a shame that the smooth rythms, ecclectic vocals, and svelt textures are drowned in the delay. If this was a mastering descision, someone should shoot the engineer in the foot.
Another Classic.......2006-09-15
Context: I own a lot of music from Thievery Corp. , K&D, Moby's instrumental work, Rob Dougan and others. But of all the different kinds of "groove" I listen to and work to all day long, Thievery are my favorite artists / duo. If you own and enjoy the Mirror Conspiracy, you're going to love this IMO.
These guys are truly incredible the way they manage to integrate a wide variety of sounds into a completely seamless and natural sounding whole. This CD flows together as a single work probably better than any other that I own. And I own a ton of instrumental music. Urban, Jazz, Ethereal, you name it. It's just impossible to get sick of this music. It reveals something new almost every time I listen to it, which is not always true of modern instrumental music. Often it just fades away into the background after a while. Not this, however....
I don't often use the word "rewarding" in reference to music, but this CD qualifies in almost every respect. Worth every penny.
ecclectic mix.......2006-03-08
with so many different artists collaborating on this cd, i don't know where to begin
i must say though, that having the flaming lips open with ' marching the hate machines into the sun' was a great beginning..
retaining a classic 'theivery' feel, you can really get the 'world music' vibe, with hints of reggae, indian, alt rock , etc
each track is well produced, and at the risk of sounding like a fanboy, there's none that i woudl skip over; the cd was just mastered so well that they all flow into each other
they've always been on my radar ( since i first heard the french version of lebanese blonde ) but this is my first disc from them, and i have no regrets

Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton and Rob Garza have always treated the line between acoustic and electronic music as a drunken sailor might, unpredictably falling on one side or the other with equal frequency. By this measure, The Richest Man in Babylon is their soberest effort to date, striding confidently into jazz, soul, world beat, and other styles with a direct, reverential approach. The band's last record, Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi, featured a set of classic jazz tunes unadorned with remixes or reinterpretation. But the songs on Babylon are originals, incorporating not just jazz but Afro-beat, Brazilian dance, Persian and Indian music, reggae, and psychedelia, all while making expert use of new and old collaborators like Sleepy Wonder, Lou Lou, and Shinehead. Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini makes an instant impression on the first track, "Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes," her voice freeing the song's melody and structure with just a few hypnotic bars. It's hard to call this an electronic record at all; even their dub-influenced tracks miss a certain studio sheen, as if Hilton and Garza simply waded into a sweltering Jamaican beach party and hit record. But while it misses the ambient, ethereal edge that made The Mirror Conspiracy a downtempo classic, Babylon satisfies with organic energy and tasteful eclecticism. --Matthew Cooke
Album Description
Rob Garza and Eric Hilton consider it their most introspective work to date. Existing somewhere between rock, dub, psychedelic, Latin, and electronic music, this 2002 album finds the duo elevating their signature sound with more contemplative and thought-provoking songwriter. The jewel case is housed in a slipcase along with a 40-page black & white photo booklet. Eighteenth Street Lounge. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional fusion........2007-07-10
Words cannot fully describe the vibes that emerge through the sound of this CD. I first heard it at a Microsoft conference in Virginia. Before the speaker took stage, The Richest Man in Babylon had captivated the audience. Something only a Thiethery Cororation could do. Immagine a group of highly thinkers in the world standing still; Absolutely mesmerized by a mystical fusion of JazzBigBandElectroCeltic sound. It was so ooooo relaxing; so oooo captivating that I got off my seat, walked to the sound system and asked the MC what algorithm he used to produce such a fantastic sound. He told me the sound was rendered by a DC group called Thievery Corporation. Ever since, I have been and remained a fan. Buy and listen to this CD. Also checkout the dub version of the same album.

Good background music.......2007-04-10
I saw them perform last year, and was told by friends that if I was going to purchase one of Thievery Corporation's CDs that this should be the one. As soon as I got it in the mail, I have listened to it nearly every day while working. If you like electronic music as background music, I would suggest this CD. It has a nice steady rhythm throughout the entire CD to keep you going. I love the CD but hate having to get up and press play again...I guess that just means that I should buy another one of Thievery Corporation's CDs.
Nothing less than 5 stars.......2007-02-11
I don't usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to raise the average rating on this album. Look, it's silly to give any TC album less than 5 stars, when comparing to any other album out there. TC makes the most brilliant music on the planet right now. Of course you should go out and buy RMIB right now, if you don't already own it. The first and last songs on this CD are worth it alone. You will find yourself listening to Resolution over and over again, mesmerized by its beautiful, swirling, mystical, comforting, and yearning sounds. The first song is just hands down brilliant. You've never heard anything like it in your life, but somehow it seems familiar.
Now, comparing TC albums to each other is a different story. There should be a separate "intra-artist" rating system. In that sense, I
would rate Cosmic Game the highest, followed by Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, and then Richest Man In Babylon.
Great Album.......2006-09-28
This is my second album by Thievery Corporation, The Cosmic Game being the first. I think I like this album a bit more due the the more organic nature of the instrumentation here. "Facing East" is my favorite song on the album, as well as one of my favorite songs at the moment. The exotic Middle Eastern groove and instruments really make this song something very unique. The song "The Richest Man In Babylon" is a real gem in more of a soulful/jazzy/reggae kind of mood. The mix of cross cultures really brings this kind of music to life. "Resolution" has a cool dreamy atmosphere, the perfect way to end this album. I will explore more of their music soon.
Wow.......2006-08-11
I can't believe Schirmer's review is highlighted, this album is amazing!! Babylon has as many bold shifts in style, experimental, innovative melds of music, RICH instrumentation, interesting & relevant lyrics and great vocal work as a late Beatles album. Except there's lyrics not only in English, but French, Farsi and Spanish!! There's Indian, dub, Latin, jazzy, rap, instrumental, fast, slow, fun, reflective all on one album with a very cool political stance. This is SO original, seriously, who sounds like Thievery Corporation?? This is one of the best albums of 2002, if not THE best (I'd put the Chemical Brother's Come With Us up there too). I feel this is Thievery, Inc.'s best album (I have them all, too), but that's a seperate argument. This is so much infinitely better than most of the totally wretched garbage that gets played on the radio/MTV these days. Also it's independently made, which is hard to hear these days as well, with total corporate control of the mainstream media. Which the group's name is a 'hip' take on. Speaking of, sure some of the songs sound 'hip,' that's a compliment, isn't it?
The only way someone could find this album bland or boring is if that person is bland or boring, i.e. has no interest in the the world outside their local community, other cultures, or only interested in one kind of music. Or if you're a neo-con.
People from all over the world came together to make this album, how cool is that??
If only there were MORE international collaborations that ended up as beautiful as this....

5 Stars to the Guy in the Corner.......2006-11-16
This is one of those albums that subtly grows on you after a couple of runs through the CD player. No one has yet compared it to any of Theivery's other albums - which are all balanced and intoxicating. Yet, I don't think you can. Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi is on a totally different plain than any of Thievery's more recent releases. Perhaps Hi-Fi is a couple stories down with an ambiance that truly embraces the listener even through the transition of tracks. Everything seems natural.
If you've listened to more recent albums from this duo you've probably become addicted to the seductive vocals and modest choruses that become addictive over time. Not so here...Instead this album produces easy beats, slow constructions of tracks, and mellow dramatic tones that seem to open doors to trance and highly reflective states. In other words, great background music that can also be enjoyed with a little concentration.
For myself, this album brings back the nostalgia of the North Shore and the smell of pineapples. Just the whole mood of strolling by palm trees with the Pacific in the background seemed to compliment this music to an even higher state...which I'm thankful to still remember.
Give this guy in the corner a try...you might be impressed.
Serious Addiction........2006-03-12
My addiction to this stuff is way over the top. I need to get in touch with these dudes so i can croon discordant and seductive!!! If i couldnt describe myself in words, which i cant, this type style of flow would do it. Excellent. Picked this up last nite at Tower. Each album ages sweet! Now to finish my collection.
*Rubbing hands greedily.
This is a great CD.......2006-03-06
This is a great CD, every track is different but good. I have all their other CDs and this one completes my collection. Most music in this genere fall into one of two catagories. The more pop-oriented bands like Morcheeba, Zero 7, Hooverphonic, etc. or the more unusual ones like Stereolab, Spicehouse, Portishead, etc. Theivery Corporation is somewhere in the middle. They have good songs put together in unique ways. Their music is always refreshing. My favorite songs on this CD are; The Oscillator, Sun, Moon, and Stars, Incident At Gate 7 and Transcendence. If you like Trip-Hop/Chill, you can't go wrong with any of their albums.
A very nice re-release.......2006-01-25
Having re-released their other albums as digipaks, Thievery Corporation did so with their first album. This is technically a re-release of the 1999 re-release, with Transcendence, Scene at the Open Air Market, Encounter in Bahia, Assault on Babylon, and One. They have removed the track Manha (which doesn't appear on the original CD anyway), which is not a big loss, and adds two tracks: Sun, Moon and Stars (from the Incident at Gate 7 single), and The Sleeper Car (from the 38.45 single). Sun, Moon, and Stars is a very nice uptempo song with a reggae-style beat, and The Sleeper Car is a very laid-back relaxed song. This is a great purchase if you didn't have these songs. Now, if they would just get around to compiling all their other B-sides, we'd be in business.

It seems Studio K7 do no wrong when its comes to their widely adored DJ Kicks series. The German label has showcased the record-selecting talents of DJs and producers from around the world, and in doing so has become a reliable brand name for quality home listening. This installment has Thievery Corporation, Washington, D.C.'s masters of the mellow groove, flexing their skills. The mood across the disc's 18 tracks is decidedly laid-back, but eclectically so. Les Baxter's '60s cinematic lounge sets the scene, but the second track is a quick fast-forward into modern lounge, as provided by Kraut-chillers A Forest Mighty Black. The vibe spans the gamut from sitar-and-tabla world beat (Up Bustle & Out) to dubby (Rockers Hi-Fi), but in the end, it's the Corp's own works that are the true standouts. This is easy listening for the hipster set; background music for the space-age dinner party. --Courtney Reimer

wow.........2004-12-21
This album again deepens my love for Thievery Corporation. I heard about TC last month, and I have purchased six albums by them since. Their flavor from all over the world is captivating, their mixing is flawlessly seamless, their music is so relaxing. This is great music for driving and for studying, and it definitely is a favorite on my collection of music. Garza/Hilton have truly mastered their art, and I am looking forward to 'The Cosmic Game', which is released in February.
Also recommend all CDs by Thievery Corporation, Ursula 1000, and Zero 7.
A Slammin' DJ Kicks! .......2004-10-05
I Love this CD. Thievery Corporation's foray into the DJ Kick's series is a classic one as it has the sounds that makes ESL label so great. It's as though Thievery Corp. were honored to make this album and you can simply feel it by the tunes selected and the flow of the cuts. On a label (K7) that's done DJ Kicks by everyone from Smith & Mighty to DJ Cam to Kruder Dorfmiester to Carl Craig as well as release albums by Tosca, Ursula Rucker and several other artists, they do know a thing or two about DJ's and mixing.
The first track had me - Les Baxter's "Tropicando"... you may remember this old school easy jazz cut from a docker's commercial in 2000 or the late nineties where the dude is at a dinner table, thinks these two lovely ladies are moving up his leg with their feet only to find out that it's actually the mister across the table that's infatuated (yikes...). But then you have a smooth flowing Forest Mighty Black track titled "Rebirth" that'll get the party going with a old styled guitar in the background & a electronic samples. It's a compost thing. Then you have Da Lata's samba influenced "Beija Flor", and this came out at a time before Songs from the Tin, so when you hear the beat heavy "Ponteio" just know that neither cut is on their debut album. Fun-Da-Mental's collab. with them in "Mother Africa" is the perfect prelude to Indian Ambiance with the electrifying "Rainbow" following it up. The beats don't stop there... Karminsky Experience's "Exploration" was a sort of anthem in 1999... so simple and so great, sitar spashes throughout. "Coming From the Top" follows and that track... if I were a boxer that would be my intro music to every fight.
Those are only a handful of the tracks. Rockers Hi-Fi, Jazzanova, Lazy Boy, DJ Cam and a few others have some smokin' tracks in what is IMO one of the best DJ comps ever put out. I was always a fan of ESL, picking up Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi a long long time ago but this one made me want to actually check out the DC lounge for myself. DEFINITELY check this out. It's a bit older and it does have a sort of India vibe to it that maybe not everyone will dig, but I still love this release and the consistency of the cd warrant the international ambience. And if you do enjoy this be sure to check out ESL's other works, from "Sounds from the Hi-Fi" all the way up to "Outernational Experience". And be sure to take a look at some of the many other greats on their label, like Karminsky Experience, Ursula 1000 and Desmond Williams just to name a few.
More class grooves..........2004-05-29
Like their Austrian peers, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation know how to mix and, like K&D, their "DJ Kicks" album is a class act in both its production and its selection of tracks. More down-tempo than K&D's offering but equally interesting in its sequencing, it scans a broader palette of styles from bossa-nova, through Indian sitars to deep Jamaican dub. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen?... well, not here, because in these guys' hands each track is integrated seamlessly into an hour long musical journey that's held together by lock-tight beats and overlays. Genuinely interesting and perfectly crafted it's another example of just how good "laid-back" club music can be in the hands of people who know what's out there and how it should be delivered.
This is an outstanding album..........2003-11-06
...of fascinating mixes. I like their own work but find it occasionally repetitive - the reggae riffs in particular. But this album enchants with brilliant elaborations. I've had it for two years and haven't tired of it yet. Along with Kruder & Dorfmeister's mixes (including a great DJKicks contribution) - and the Byrne/Eno collaboration in My Life in the Bush of Ghosts - and many of the cuts in the Verve Remixed series - and some of DJShadow - Thievery's mix albums represent some of the most interesting pop/jazz/electronic music.
ExtraSpectaculary.......2003-08-19
Thievery Corp. does it again. A powerful compilation of extraordinairy sound. These DJ kicks albums always sound so damn good within the genre of the artist.

Get ready for your jazz education. These virgin, unremixed tracks taken from the 1960s Verve vaults were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents like The Mirror Conspiracy. Their time capsule is a bubbling, Brazilian soul-jazz blast, starting with the sensuous "Menina Flor" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. Jimmy Smith's "Road Song" is a classic of '60s hard bop, while Kenyon Hopkins's "Hard Latin" shows the kind of groovy organ jazz that was popular in bars from Philly to hot 'Lanta. Things go left with Cal Tjader's "The Fakir," a day-glo Middle Eastern track influenced by Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," while Astrud Gilberto pulls a Nancy Sinatra on another freaky standout, "Light My Fire." Walter Wanderley, Wynton Kelly, Chico Hamilton, and Elis Regina also light up the night, along with your hi-fi. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
Great *JAZZ* album... TC only selected old tracks........2005-12-01
I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.
This is where they get their inspiration.......2005-03-13
I remember the first time I listened to a record by Thievery Corp. I became instantly aware of how different their sound is. I could not help wonder where this pair gets their inspiration, and what serves them so well in their constant stream of well engineered sounds.
Well...this is it!
I think they did a great job in letting their public know what inspires them to conceive the sounds they so well create.
The songs in this compilation range from Bossa Nova to early Latin Jazz...a truly remarkable spectrum of early sounds that planted the seed for part of what is now known as loounge music.
Not Your Classic Thievery.......2004-10-26
This CD by all means is not like Thievery's other stuff. When I first bought the album I was a little disappointed. I had boughten "The Richest Man in Babylon" and had fallen in love with these guys. So when I got this CD it just didnt do it for me at first. It was just all jazz tracks. But I took it with me one day to the library to study with and I have to admit it is really a great CD. I am glad I bought it. All the tracks are really amazing once you get into them. But hey if you're not into jazz dont buy this cd.
What's Old Is New Again..........2003-08-09
Bossa Nova, Jazz, Reggae and Lounge-Pop are what the Thievery Corporation is all about. The resurrection of the downtempo-lounge movement of recent years is a reflection of the original musical craze of over 40 years ago. It is nice to see that artists such as Willie Bobo, the Gilbertos, Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, and other artists that my parents grooved to, have now come full circle for a new generation. Although this music may sound a bit dated to those born after 1985, those who can appreciate music before the MTV age can chill out with a cool drink and some headphones, stereo lounge chair optional. This CD is a nice tribute compilation of various artists and gives us an idea of TC's inspirational roots.
Can't get enough!.......2003-06-11
I first heard this compilation in the Pacific Restaurant in Dublin. I asked the server for the name of the CD and ordered it right away. I'm a boomer and was heavily into the "Top 10". Finally, I've matured beyond that. Thievery has done a great job of placing the music so that it flows along. The instrumentals are catchy enough to linger in your head and complex enough to engage you in multiple listenings. First rate. I'm ordering this for my daughter!

Nice massage music. .......2007-06-09
I own a day spa and my therapists all enjoy this music. It is great for relaxation.
The Best of Ambient Music.......2005-10-22
This is the sort of rare CD that you can turn on, set "repeat CD" and not touch it for the day; or even for days! I have had this CD for many, many years... and it has never lost its appeal. PS: This is NOT "upbeat" jazzy ambient; but, mellow "calm you down" ambient. Each track is unique.
Lydia.......2005-05-21
Most of the tracks on this album are very good, but Lydia by Tim Story is special. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever come across.
A tapestry of earth and music..........2002-09-06
This is a marvelously moving album to experience. While all the artists are different the album flows together very nicely. It moves along at its own pace, far far different than the pace of much of the everyday world in which we live. It is mellow and is not something you actively listen to although over time the melodies become quite clear and, oddly enough, captivating even exciting, though on a different level.
Play it in the background or play it in the car and suddenly an entirely different ambience is created. It's a beautiful work. I never tire of it and it embraces whatever mood I'm in and allows it to unfold in a rhythm all its own. You won't regret it a bit.
Path for yoga, for relaxation.......2000-10-16
As a Yoga instructor and artist I am constantly seaching for that special flow- that music that you consciously hear as you begin yoga or meditation, but has the ability to disappear into the recesses of your mind as your awareness attunes to a different level. Path invokes relaxation. It is fast enough to use in anything involving movement, yet not so fast you feel hurried in any way. I am not sure that it would be slow enough for pure meditation. Every musical creation on this CD is different, yet it flows seemlessly. I also bought YogaZone, Music for Yoga- it was good-a few shared artists- but nothing compared to Path. If you are looking for a complement to your yoga, or want some music to create a relaxed atomosphere this is it!

Songs Of Praise And Worship ~ The Early Years Of John Michael Talbot.......2006-03-30
This CD contains two of John Michael Talbot's earliest releases, 'The Lord's Supper' his third Christian album from '79 which was his first as a Catholic and 'Be Exalted' which was his fifteenth released in '86.
Containing -22 tracks- this compilation of Catholic worship and praise music contains many of the essential Talbot songs that made the name John Michael Talbot a household word in most Catholic homes in the '80's. 'The Lord's Supper' was and probably still is his signature release in the minds of his fans.
Essential JMT!
Two Wonderful Recordings On A Single Disc.......2005-06-21
Here are two very nice musical performances; THE LORD'S SUPPER (1979), which provided the "bridge" John Talbot crossed, going from country rock to the more contemplative style many identify with him today. This is a mass and the Spirit seems very present here - the music can lift and help bring freshness. BE EXALTED, released in 1986, is a fine collection of contemporary worship songs, including "Holy Ground" which attracted minor radio attention upon its release and which at least one of us finds lovely and meaningful beyond words. "Lord, Be Glorified" also is included, a simple hymn that formed part of the soundtrack of my college years - oh, those BSU Bonfires...

Customer Reviews:
Great album for a wonderful cause!.......2006-07-25
I loved the original edition of "Red Hot & Latin" when it came out 10 years ago, but the new re-issue track is even better! Highlights include the new bonus tracks from Brazilian Girls/Kevin Johansen, Kinky, Nortec Collective, and Thievery Corporation....but the older material also holds up quite well.
I still think that Fishbone and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs' collaboration on "What's New Pussycat" is such a blast - those guys should tour together again some time!
This album was truly groundbreaking when it first came out - there were bilingual collaborations from many acts, WAY before this was commonplace. Any fan of Latin, world, or alternative music needs to own this album.....plus, all the proceeds go to fight HIV/AIDS in Latin America and the U.S. Latino community, so it's for a worthy cause.
