Sure they're big, dumb, and obvious, but weren't the Ramones? Isn't Britney? (Especially Britney!) It is, after all, no mean feat to forge a bona fide rock stereotype, let alone become a self-perpetuating parody of said cliché in the bargain. Fashions may come and go, but the Scorpions still "Rock You Like a Hurricane"--and now at sporting events the nation over, no less. The material here leans heavily on the Hanover band's '80s prime, a period when they burnished their melodic pop-metal tack--if not their traditional spandex couture--all the way to the top of the charts, capping a decade of journeyman hard-rocking. There isn't much here from their formative '70s period (with the exception of Animal Magnetism's metal-shuffle "The Zoo"), but proto-power ballads like "No One Like You" and "Still Loving You," and hook-filled, power chord pomp like "Big City Nights" helped pave the way for the rise of the glam metal of Poison and G'N'R in the late '80s--and hey, thanks for that. That hard-pop sense also comes to fore on an '89 cover of the Who's "I Can't Explain" and a pair of undeniably consistent new recordings, the title track and "Cause I Love You." Scorpions über alles! --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Alles Gut!.......2007-07-26

This is a great greatest hits compilation from teh Scorpions. Not only are they the best rockers to come out of Germany, but they're one of the best hard rock bands from anywhere. Their stuff is definitely hard rock, but not angry or aggressive and most definitely not just noise. They can do stuff that has feeling, in a rocker way. This is a great CD to put in the player when you want some stirring rock music going. Especially awesome songs:

Rock You Like a Hurricane
The Zoo
Big City Nights
Rhythm of Love
I Can't Explain
Don't Believe Her
Tease Me Please Me
Hit Between the Eyes
Alien Nation

I've always been a fan of the Scorpions and particularly the voice of lead singer Klaus Meine. I can tell Scorpions fans to hold their breath for the next album, "Humanity", which is scheduled for release in May. Last night (March 24) I saw a live performance of the title song at a concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Union, and it is a beautiful and politically important rocker. Look for it!

5 out of 5 stars The best hits.......2006-12-13

I enjoy this cd devinely, when in the mood to rock. Definately 5 stars, and the slower music in the later part of the cd is also nice to listen too and relaxing.

4 out of 5 stars Schpinal Tap?.......2007-01-03

I've heard many of these Scorpions songs over the years and thought they were the kind of band that Spinal Tap was spoofing. But when I recently heard "The Zoo" blaring out from the local classic rock station (and could not help myself from singing along), I wondered about the odds of a German band becoming superstars in the U.S. So I picked up this CD and I'll be darned if I didn't become a convert after a few listens. This is incredibly catchy stuff. What makes it even cooler is Klaus Meine's heavily German-accented vocals. No chance you'll be able to duplicate that on Karaoke night.

1 out of 5 stars Hilarious, funniest CD ever !!!!!.......2006-12-06

From the juxtaposition in the title of "20th Century Masters" with "Best of Scorpions" , through each of the songs the laughs never end.

This is a perfect CD. If you are Beavis or Butthead you can rock out, if you have a brain you can laugh your a*s off at the indescribable suckitude of Scorpions.

Seriously though, I expected more from this CD given Germany's long history of extraordinary pop music.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of hit tracks for a new Scorpions fan .......2006-06-29

The Best of Scorpions: The Millenium Collection from the 20th Century Masters series is a great CD for those fans who want to get know what the Scorpions are all about. You can't really complain about the cost; the track list makes it definitely worth the price.

The 2 most commercially-successful albums "Love At First Sting" (Rock You Like A Hurricane, Big City Nights, Still Loving You) and "Crazy World" (Tease Me Please Me, Wind Of Change, Send Me An Angel) are well-represented here. Although, having 2 tracks from the sub-par "Savage Amusement" (Rhythym of Love, Believe In Love) and only 1 from the vastly-superior "Blackout" (No One Like You) is a joke.

If you want a decent selection of great songs from one of the better rock bands of the 80s and 90s but don't want to spend a lot of cash, get your hands on this disc. If you want a more complete collection of great Scorpions music and don't mind spending a little more, pick up the 3-disc "Box Of Scorpions" set instead of this.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD! .......2006-04-03

Scorpions. When it comes to heavy metal, very few bands did it better than Scorpions. And, this timeless CD of Scorpions makes their legacy larger than life. Read on for further details.

On this disc, as always you get the 24.bit remastering, meaning it's the best possible sound. And this is all the casual fan will need. I Can't Explain, Rock You Like A Hurricane and The Zoo are all here, and they all sound excellent.

There is not one bad thing I have to say about this disc. And, at 12 tracks, you get a mighty fine overview of Scorpions best. And if you want an excellent sampler for Scorpions, this the one to pick.

Overall this CD is highly recommended!

12 Tracks 57:24 total time~Universal entertainment-24.bit remastering. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music.......2006-09-13

If you like the Scorpions you can't go wrong with this CD. Excellent selection of all my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Pre Wind of Change Best of.......2006-08-30

This disc got a fair bit of push at the time but when it was released prior their biggest international hit (Wind of Change) the validity of this '89 release comes into question for the latter day convert. No arguing with the tracks that are on the disc though. Have a squiz at the track listing and you'll see the quality. Rock You Like A Hurrican, Rhythm of Love, Big City Nights and Lovedrive all do the job as does their cover song Can't Explain which was also the bands contribution to the Stairway To Heaven, Highway to Hell compilation album. Some of the ballads don't work for me personally but a number of them were hits in certain territories like Still Loving You and No One Like You. The title gives fair warning, for every You Give Me All I Need ther is a rocker like Blackout and Another Piece of Meat.

I always get a good feeling about this album but that's probably because I bought it while on holiday in Switzerland so perhaps the good vibes of my trip are colouring my judgement a bit. But for me this is a four star release due to it's judicious blend of metal (Blackout/Another Piece of Meat), hard rock (Rock You Like A Hurricane), generic rock 'n' roll (Can't Explain) and ballads (No On Like You etc). But there are later and far more exhaustive best of packages out there nowadays, so despite the quality tunes this is a package of limited value for buyers today. Still, top wattage.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great CD!.......2006-08-26

Not sure why people are bashing this CD because it's one of my absolute favorite CD's of all time. My first Scorps purchase was "The Zoo" on a 45. For you youngens, that's a single song on a vinyl disk that's played on a record player. Good luck finding any of these anymore! I upgraded from my 45 version of The Zoo to the full-blown LP. I had to save up my pennies to get this expensive album when it came out and then figure out how to record it onto a cassette. What can I say, I was a kid and I was broke. For those that don't know what an album is, it's also a vinyl disk but this baby ran at 33 revolutions per second and had better quality sound than the 45 and even had a bunch more songs like a CD does today. The cassette was a miracle product that came on the market shortly after those wonderful 8 track players came into full swing. Ah, I miss the days of seeing an 8-track tape fluttering in the breeze after someone threw the tape out his or her car window at 65 mph because the darn thing got stuck in the player for the last time. Those were the days all right. Speaking of CD's, when these little beauties came on the scene, I had the money and went straight out and bought this CD right after buying my first CD player. At that time you couldn't record to a CD like you can today. Did I mention I didn't stop there? I had to go out and get the DVD's as well and how about that mp3 file in my cell phone? Anyway, I've played these songs through most of my adult life. On the CD version I played the laser dots off the disk. Did I mention I'm loosing my hearing from playing Scorps rock tunes like Still Loving You at full volume on a Boze system that really cranks? But wait, there's more. I love the songs on this album, oops, I mean CD, so much that I couldn't just listen to them anymore. I wanted to learn how to play them myself so I went to the local Guitar Center Store and spent a little more coin on a new $1000 guitar and $900 Marshall amp. Sorry Amazon, you weren't even a twinkle in someone's eye back in those days. After doing this I learned just how talented the Scorps are and admired their talent even more. The Scorpions are master musicians and the reviewers are right, this CD doesn't have all the Scorp songs but it's the CD you must have if you love the Scorps. The songs on this CD are the ones the Scorps are known for and I wouldn't trade this CD for anything. They'll have to pry this CD out of my cold dead hands after I die!

4 out of 5 stars Missing Some Songs, But Still A Great Scorps CD!!!.......2004-02-27

This album is missing a couple good songs, like Send Me An Angel, And Loving Sunday Morning. But a good CD nonetheless...
Here's my 2 Cents:

Rock You Like A Hurricane - A Scorps Classic!!! It'll make you wanna' stand up and shout!!! Very electrifying. 5/5

I Can't Explain - Simular to Blackout. Sounds like somthing you'd hear from Judas Priest. 4.75/5

Still Loving You - A slow ballad. Very sullen. MAkes you want to break down and cry. *sniff* 5/5

Big City Nights - It's like Rock You Like A Hurricane pt. 2. They both have that great neon Jaming feeling. 5/5

Lovedrive - Not a weak song... Just sounds like somthing you'd hear from Loverboy *Blaughh* 3.75/5

Holiday - My friend DJ's favorite Scorps song EVER. I love the intro and overall statistics of the song. 5/5

Blackout - An up-and-go-go feeling song! Good chorus. 5/5

Rhythem Of Love - A sweet love ballad. The Scorps make love ballads so NOT sickeningly sweet. There all just so damn powerful!!! 5/5

No One Like You - MY FAVORITE SCORPIONS SONG EVER!!! The chords are very Jamin'. 6/5

You Give Me All I Need - Awsome... Need I say more? 5/5

Hey You - My least favorite on the CD. Still good though. 3.5/5

The Zoo - Great pick for an outro, one of the Scorps best! 5/5

In Conclusion... Get it if you are into Old School, like Judas Priest, Ozzy, Dio, and all that. If your into nu-metal, This may be too old for your tastes. Personally I love it!!!

3 out of 5 stars Too much missing to be taken seriously.......2003-08-05

Tying with Roger Daltrey for the worst album title of all time, it's hard to imagine that this is what the powers that be saw as a Scorpions best of collection. To begin with, the disc leans too heavily on the later years, which admittedly are the bread and butter of the record company, but not at all representative of what a force the Scorps were in the late '70's/early '80's. From where I stand, start with Animal Magnetism and Blackout, then slip in the occasional mid to late '80's cookie cutters. True, there were some decent songs on the late '80's albums, but to get a real taste for the band, much of the early stuff is essential. Average at best, but an okay place for the casual fan to start.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the early years.......2006-07-06

How this (vinyl) album rocked me through my college years. I believe I was the only one who had it in 1980. Mine has a different cover (scorpion on a woman's thigh). Scorps got no airplay then. This is a cult classic along with UFO's Strangers in the Night. Schenker Brothers Rock!

5 out of 5 stars A solid overview of their early material.......2005-11-08

Released in 1984 at the height of their popularity, Best of Scorpions compiles the best songs from their albums Fly to the Rainbow through Taken by Force. These albums, while popular in Japan, were seldom heard in the U.S. before the band broke through with their 1982 album Blackout. What you hear on Best of Scorpions is a band polishing their sound. The songs are rawer and heavier overall with a large emphasis on Uli John Roth's Hendrix-like lead work, which while impressive, occasionally clashed with the band's more melodic material. While Klaus Meine's lead vocals were very powerful, his command of the English language was limited which led to many of their songs to sound disjointed. However, Rudolf Schenker's gift of writing memorable melodic riffs show their fruition here and would sound awesome once the band retuned their sound starting with 1979's Lovedrive, which would be the band's first release with lead guitarist Matthias Jabs.

Every track here is very solid. Tracks like "Pictured Life", "Backstage Queen", and "Steamrock Fever" are excellent arena rockers even if you can't understand Meine's vocals most of the time. Songs like "He's A Woman-She's A Man", "Virgin Killer", and "Dark Lady" are furious rockers featuring menacing riffs and Roth's wild lead work. While the tracks "Robot Man" and "Speedy's Coming" have great riffs, the lyrics are pretty weak, something they'd improve on their future albums. However, "In Trance" is an excellent power ballad, their best next to "Still Loving You" from Love at First Sting. Roth's "Hell Cat" sounds like one of the heavier tunes off of Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and is also very good if you can get used to his lead vocals. Finally, "The Sails of Charon", which Testament later covered on Signs of Chaos, is one of the great early epics of heavy metal history. Like how "Victim of Changes" is to Judas Priest, it has become one of the Scorpions' defining tracks. All told, while not as polished as their more popular albums from the '80s and '90s, Best Of Scorpions shows that the band was a formidable force years before they broke the mainstream. While this compilation is now out of print, it's worth seeking out. And if you like what you hear, all of their '70s albums are pretty decent.

3 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2003-08-14

The Scorpions are one of the greatest power rock bands of all time, I shouldn't have to tell you that. Unfortunately, there's a problem. Not many of their greatest hits albums cover the band's early material with Michael Schenker and Ulrich Roth. Finally, we have one that does! Read on for pros and cons of this compilation.

PROS:

This compilation features tracks from the band's second through fifth albums (Fly To The Rainbow through Virgin Killer) The CDs that contain these songs are EXTREMELY difficult to find in the States, so American fans of the band may see this as a good alternative to buying many hard to find and pricey CDs.

CONS:

The problem here is obvious - THERE AREN'T ENOUGH SONGS! Likewise, there aren't any songs from the band's underrated debut album, Lonesome Crow. And, of course, this ONLY covers early material, so you get nothing with Matthias Jabs on lead guitar (and that's EVERYTHING from 1979 on!) Accordingly, you won't get ANY big hits here.

OVERALL:

If you really want to hear some early Scorpions stuff, and you don't want to hunt down the albums, this is a good alternative, but I actually recommend hunting them down over buying this, because this just isn't enough.

5 out of 5 stars Best Remaster - Better than the Box of Scorpions.......2004-07-21

I don't feel the need to praise Scorpions like the other reviewers because you already know the guys. And I don't need to tell about the songs because you already know them. What I really want to talk about is the sound quality of the CD.

I bought this one, the Box of Scorpions and the Remaster series of the album. I played the same songs on all of them. It sounded like they traveled through time and just recorded today with the new technology on the "Best of Scorpions" - There are many of them so I will give the Full Catalog Number: 724349701328 - in Amazon it is only 4970132. I am not saying don't buy the "Box of Scorpions" There are many more songs that I liked on that one on other albums. But This one sounds awesome.

2 out of 5 stars Another sampler?.......2000-07-25

I think Scorpions are the band with the most samplers in rock history! Why another one? OK, the songs are ofcourse good, but this is an 'no-need' release. Believe me, I am a big fan... Two stars, because the songs are ok.

5 out of 5 stars The really "BEST" of Scorpions!.......2000-06-24

This cd includes the hits of Scorpions. I like almost all the songs. The only weak tracks are "I'm going mad" and "Love is blind". However, it deserves 5 stars. But hey, where is "You and I", "When the smoke is going down" and "Polar Nights"? I think "Make it real" or "Always Somewhere" aren't so good as that songs. But it doesn't prevent this of being the most "BEST" of all BEST of Scorpions. My favourite tracks are "Wind Of Change" and "In Trance". Please buy it, or you aren't a rocker.

5 out of 5 stars This is the strangest but also the hottest and the best of.......1999-08-15

I am really into this CD.It is just good, wierdly charming.THe sound of robot man just makes me cannot sleep. While the ghostly sound of "the sails of charon " haunted me and make me feel like i am experiencing an illusion.I like "In trance " the best because of the hair splitting sounds of the guitars and the voice of Klaus meine si just so terribly oppresive.it is ineffiably stimulating.

5 out of 5 stars 70's Scorps.......2006-03-14

For those who are not sure whether to buy this compilation of seventies Scorpions? Here's some help.

Tracks 1-5 are taken from the 1974 album "Fly To The Rainbow".
Tracks 6-11 are taken from the 1975 album "In Trance".
Tracks 12-17 are taken from the 1976 album "Virgin Killer".

One thing I don't understand is how come this compilation did not feature anything from "Taken By Force" and "Tokyo Tapes-Live" (both released in 1978)? I mean it was the Scorpions last two albums on RCA before signing to Mercury to make "Lovedrive" (1979).

As for the sound quality? The sound is pretty good. Don't expect Rhino Records remastering sound. Remember these songs were made in the mid seventies.

Highlight rockers off this album : "Speedy's Coming", "Virgin Killer" and "Catch Your Train"

5 out of 5 stars The Scorpions...........2004-11-26

... at probably their very best. A lot of people remember Scorpions just because of hits like "Blackout", "Rock You Like A Hurricane", "Wind Of Change", "You And I" etc.

Well, that's not a bad thing. But check out their earlier albums! You'll be blown away! This complilation plays a role in that. While I'll admit that IMHO, they left out some great songs, I also realise that it is a compilation disc and they can't fit EVERYTHING in it.

I recommend this CD. It'll broaden your horizon as regards Scorpions.

5 out of 5 stars "You think you know, but you have no idea.".......2003-07-21

Many people that know Scorpions only know of their "mercury years." (The albums they released here in the states.) Well you've got another thing coming. The scorpions with Klauss Meine, and Uli Roth created some of the hottest tunes while establishing their career in Germany. This collection of their greatest hits from the early years (70's) includes some of their finest work like "Pictured Life," Robot Man," In Trance," "Virgin Killer," "Yellow Raven," etc. If you like scorpions American debut albums like Blackout, Savage Amusement, and Pure Instinct, I strongly urge you to get their early albums. Its heavy-metal at its finest. This album is a perfect place to start because it will give you samples from their early years. So Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars It has all the best songs from the Scorpions in the 70's.......2003-06-20

It has all the best songs from the Scorpions in the 70's. It contains five songs out of the all the Scorpions albums from the 70's, from the album "Fly to the Rainbow" to "Virgin Killer" which in all would be 17 songs(2 of the songs in there, I don't know what album they came from, I think they're bonuses). Though they didn't put the songs from their first album in there or the songs from their last two 70's album which contained Ulrich Jon Roth in one of them, I would recommend this album if you are a fan of the Scorpions songs from the eighties such as Rock you like a hurricane or Big City nights. You would definetely love this CD then.

5 out of 5 stars The "Real" Scorpions.......2000-10-17

This is it! This cd is all you need. The only problem is there's no songs from Lovedrive. However, this seems to concentrate only from the RCA era. (a.k.a.- The Uli Roth Days!!) After Lovedrive, the Scorpions were more interested in making money than good music. Although, who can really blame them? Even though their commercial success came from Blackout thru Crazy World, a "real" Scorpion fan knows that this is the best of their best!

3 out of 5 stars Good for fans of EARLY Scorpions - and no one else.......2003-08-14

4 out of 5 stars Early Scorps - The RCA Years.......2001-06-25

As a big Scorpions fan i was very interested in hearing how they sounded before they hit it big. I had heard that their early stuff was as good or even better than the material released on the Mercury Label, i'm not sure that i'd agree with that comment, but this album does feature many solid songs including 3 live ones. Also, they seemed to have a bit more energy & faster riffs, largely due to Uli Roth, who is wicked at guitar! I would definately recommend this album, not just to the die-hard Scorps fan, but to any rock fan!

I don't think it's necessary to buy all of their RCA albums, as long as you buy this and their first Best Of album. Some of the better songs on this Best of Vol. 2 are: "Speedy's Coming" (Live), "They Need A Million", "Longing For Fire", "Top Of The Bill", "Catch Your Train", "Sun In My Hand", "Crying Days", & "We'll Burn The Sky" (Live)

4 out of 5 stars Before They Hit Paydirt , or, When They Were Good.......2000-02-05

I have no idea who all these people are who've been buying Scorpions albums the last 20 years, but in case you're too young to remember or never noticed at the time, the ONLY good Scorpions is OLD (RCA-era) Scorpions, a/k/a The Uli Roth Era. The early model of the band delivered salvo after salvo of blistering, ram-it-down-your-throat heavy metal,70s style, with the aforementioned Herr Roth cranking out tortured leads, fills and justplainsquawk like his hair was on fire and setting a new standard in heavy-rock guitar that hundreds of young players would emulate (to this day). By the time they'd switched to Mercury and begun their world domination, Roth had left the fold and the result was the same uninteresting mix of midtempo chug and syrupy ballads they've paid the bills with the last two decades. I suppose most of the fans they've made over this period wouldn't care for this early stuff for the VERY reason it's great - its raw, immediate, uncompromising urgency and excitement! But like the man said, if you're a connosieur of hard'n'heavy, the only Scorpions you need are these two RCA best-ofs. Uli, you STILL da man!

5 out of 5 stars An easy winner at a bargain price...nice remaster too.......2000-01-14

If you're interested in pre-Mercury Scorpions music, all you really need are Best Of and this. What makes this disc particularly worthwhile is that it culls several live songs from the stunning "Virgin Killer,""Taken by Force," and "Tokyo Tapes." For twelve bucks you can get a nice package which includes many of the best cuts from those albums...BUT don't think this "best of" has anything to do with their mainstream hits, as the pro review at the top points out. For that you want "Deadly Sting" not any of these "bests."

4 out of 5 stars This CD is aimed directly at the older Scorpions fans........1999-02-05

If you are a true Scorpions fan, then you may want to give this one a try. This CD contains some classic sounds from the Scorpions earlier recordings, such as "Speedy's Coming"(live),"Catch Your Train",and my personal all time favorite Scorp's tune "We'll Burn The Sky"(live). The only complaint I have with this album is that my favorite song(We'll Burn The Sky) is not the studio version. All in all, though, this is an excellent mix of they're earlier efforts. If you like the Scorpions, you need this one!!!
