A couple of years after asking Can I Borrow a Dollar? and before he lost the "sense" in his moniker, the Chicago MC now known as Common dropped this impressive sophomore set, marking him as one of the most versatile MCs to emerge in the 1990s. Shirking the often derivative flows of his debut, Resurrection finds the Windy City rhymer ably assisted by the voluptuous jazzy excursions of producers No I.D. & Ynot. He revels in ear-tickling wordplay, slinging countless witty punchlines and similes on "Orange Pineapple Juice" and "Communism"--songs that require several listens to unravel. Far from relentless chest-thumping bravado, Common's lyrics have substance, exploring inner faults and fears on "Book of Life" and touching poignancy on his classic metaphorical ode to hip-hop culture, "I Used to Love H.E.R.," a track that is perhaps more relevant today than when it was released. The beginnings of Common's ongoing struggle between his boyish effusiveness and moral responsibility, which figures greatly in his subsequent releases, is captured on this essential release. --Del F. Cowie

this cd, as of late july 2007 has 4 1/2 stars
i disagree
this is a 5 star cd
and where is this Ynot guy on Chapter 13 (rich man vs. Poorman) his verse is so nice
This album is aight........2007-06-24
Yup, it's just alright to me. I know that many rate this album as one of the greatest, but I didn't hear that when I listened to it. When I heard this album back in the say when it first came out, I didn't like it at all. I figured that since my tastes have changed since then, I'd give it another shot. So, I got it from the local library and while I like it better now then I did then, I still can't really feel this album too much. My first Common album (the first one that I bought) was "One Day..." Now, that was a very good album, one of the best to date IMO. Since then, I've purchased every album that Common has come out with and have not been disappointed. It appears to me that he went through a serious change between "Resurrection" and One Day..." I guess that he went through a process of maturing and began writing better lyrics, which is why I like "One Day..." a whole lot better than "Resurrection" His style of rhyming and the lyrics here I just did not like. I loved the jazz infused beats and his pop's rap at the end, but I just didn't really care too much for the songs. I still like the album some, but not as much as his other albums.

In the vein of the great MCs of this thing we call Hip-Hop, Common arises from the fray with his sophmore opus, which, is a masterpiece. Period. This album truly showed the dexterity he shares with the greats of the game all while sprinkling consciousness on our heads and in our ears. Kudos to the chef!
Good hip hop album.......2006-09-28

To celebrate 10 years as the world's most popular musical, the cast of Les Misérables threw a phenomenal birthday party at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. A decade after Trevor Nunn directed its premiere at the Barbican Centre, and the subsequent move into what became a permanent home at the West End Palace Theatre, producer Cameron Macintosh felt the time had come for a little outing for "the miserables." Conductor David Charles Abell, having climbed out of the cluttered Palace pit, for one glorious night has the entire Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal and there are appearances from over 150 singers--birthday celebs from Les Mis stagings worldwide--who flocked to the grandiose venue. Hosts for the night are the 1995 London cast: Colm Wilkinson's Valjean has power and beauty in "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home," and Michael Ball is a charming Marius. Miss Saigon herself, Lea Salonga, gets the crowd-pleasing favorite "On My Own." The Albert Hall sounds filled to the brim with an appreciative audience that contributes to the festive atmosphere. The result is a real treat for fans and lovers of Boubil and Schönberg's greatest musical--this double CD is an obligatory item in every collection of Les Mis memorabilia. --Yngvil V.G.

The best one I've heard.......2007-04-10
The first time I ever heard Les Miserables, it was on the Original Broadway cast CD. That CD had great vocals, but I didn't realize how much I was missing until I saw the show in NYC. What sets this recording apart from many others, including the OBC version, is the fact that, like the musical, it is through-sung. The complete symphonic recording is also this way, and has all of the music. Although this CD is lacking a few parts, most noticibly a shortend Lovely Ladies, missing a section with Javert, and Gavroche's death, when looked at in terms of the completeness and vocal abilities, this is the best.
Regarding the cast, Colm Wilkinson is THE Valjean. I love his vocals and the expression he puts into the character. Armstrong, as Therniere, is great, as is Jenny Galloway (Mme Therniere). They are both great actors and convey the comedic nature of the parts well. Hannah Chick, as young Cosette is splendid, especially in the fact that she sings right through the accidental gun shot noise in the middle of her song. Gavroche is priceless. The best I've ever heard. Ruthie Henshall does an absolutely brilliant Fantine, incredibly moving. Michael Ball (Marius) also has the supberb vocal ability and expression so prevolent in this cast.
Now, my two favorite characters, Javert and Eponine...Phillip Quast (Javert) is practically flawless. I personally don't like his interpretation of the prologue, but that's just me. Other than that, perfect. He more than makes up for that with his rendition of Stars, and his soliliquy in which he dies. You can visualize him going mad and jumping from the bridge just from his voice...amazing. Lea Salonga's vocal ability is unmatched. Her rendition of A Little Fall of Rain is tearjerking, and you can fell Eponine's pain and anguish throughout the entire CD. Anything with her in it is worth buying.
Finally, this CD has a recording of One Day More sung by the Valjeans from all over the world...amazing to hear.
To conclude, this is the best recording of Les Miserables you can buy.
Great musical! Best singers!.......2007-03-13
This is my favorite collection because the performers are amazing. I don't like the exploding balloon during little Cosette's song, but the lead singers in this CD couldn't be any better.
if you like les miz you can't go wrong.......2007-03-09
personally I am a sucker for a good musical...and music in general...This however is exceptional. I love it, it is one of my favorite versions of the musical, and I have been eyeing this cd for sometime now, i am so happy to finally have it in my collection. the quality is good, the music great, and the voices are fantastic!
My 1st "Les Mis".......2006-10-27
It took some time for this musical to sink in for me but when I sat down to watch this broadcast the characters, plot, motivation(s) and all the nuances of minor characters fell into place -- it was exquisite. Granted some of the voices might not be up to par for more experienced ears and there are technical glitches here and there but this is my favorite. I still admire Hannah Chick for continuing with Castle on a Cloud in spite of the distraction -- that's an actor. I also find the extended applause at the end of some songs annoying but that doesn't negate the 99.99% pure magic previous.
My main beef is that discography is NOT IN ORDER on the second disc, and that works my nerves. I hate having to go in and edit the list.
What worries me NOW is that when it comes to the time to making a film of the musical it might suffer the same fate that Sweeny Todd seems to have looming in the wings. The Broadway musical (ST) was cast with actors, some happened to be stars. I hate it when something as fine as Sweeny Todd, or Les Miserables, would be filmed with stars (OK, JD is both but the director and leading lady have to go) and not actors.
Filming of Les Miserables -- in my life time please. Would it be asking to much to have someone do a remake of 'The Wiz' with spending a zillion dollars on junk? Ok, ok, ok, I'm going to go listen to Philip Quast who is simply amazing and blows my socks off.
Best Les Miz Recording Out There.......2006-09-23
Now don't you disregard this because it says I'm a kid. I am very experienced in theatre and know exactly what I am talking about.
Colm Wilkinson(Jean Valjean): His enunciation is annoying and he tends to rasp and whispers. Great false but not my favorite Valjean.
Phillip Quast(Javert): Brilliant performance. This Aussie is the perfect Javert, his voice is clear and strong, wrapped in emotion.
Ruthie Henshall(Fantine): In my opinion, the best in the entire cast. Her throaty, crystal voice is absolutely exquisite. My favorite singer. That reviewer who said she has an awful voice seriously needs help! She is breathtaking!
Michael Ball(Marius): What can I say? Wonderful as always. Fantastic actor and very powerful singer. I get chills hearing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables".
Judy Kuhn(Cosette): Nice voice, I do like her better as Pocahontas or Florence (Chess) though. Her accent is extremely blatant. All in all, Rebecca Caine should have been cast but Judy Kuhn is still very good.
Lea Salonga(Eponine): Wow. That's all I can say. She took my breath away as Kim in Miss Saigon and now in Les Miz, she impresses me once again. A magical rendition of "On My Own" and moves me to tears everytime I listen to her death scene with Michael Ball, "A Little Fall of Rain".
Alun Armstrong and Jenny Galloway(M. and Mme. Thenardier): Hysterical performances by both! Such talents! Jenny Galloway is returning for the Broadway revival in November, too.
Michael Maguire(Enjolras): Annoying accent again. Can't they all just sound English? Still, wonderful voice and great delivery. Very satisfying.
Over all, I highly recommend this recording. It is the best I have heard so far. The Original Broadway one was horrid and the London was okay. But this one is thrilling and moving. Les Miz at its best.

Better Believe It!.......2007-07-12
Megadeth's first album. Dave Mustaine was kicked out from Metallica before they were making their first album. Mustaine was one of the writers in four songs in "Kill 'em All"..."Phantom Lord", "Jump in the Fire", "Metal Militia", and..."The Four Hoursemen"...Mustaine made his own lyrics to "Four Horsemen"...it was called "Mechanix"...it has the same riffs but a little bit different lyrics. Actually, "Four Horsemen" was called "Mechanics" before...it was Dave's song! I like Megadeth more than Metallica but I think Metallica's version of that song was a little bit better than Megadeth's. But there's better songs in KIMB...the first song is fast but sad..."Last Rites/ Loved to Death"...I like the riff so much...it is one of my favourite megadeth songs. "Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!"...need I to say that there's excellent lyrics? There's also great metal riffs...it is a killer track! "Skull Beneath the Skin" is also a great track...it comes better all the time you're listening to it. "Rattlehead" and "Chosen Ones" are great heavy metal tracks. "Looking Down the Cross" is at first peaceful then it becomes heavier...and the lyrics are awesome! Megadeth's debut is an original sounded...they had still that innocence (in music) that also Black Sabbath had in their debut...like most of the band has in their first albums. It may sound a little bit raw but that's what makes it special.
Stars: Last Rites/ Loved to Death, Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!, Looking Down the Cross, Rattlehead
Great debut album.......2007-04-26
This is a great debut album for one of the greatest metal bands of all time. I prefer megadeth to metallica. This is probably the fastest album they put out, it starts fast with last rites/loved to deth and doesnt let up until the last track. Great technical musicianship and catchy riffs flood this album. Its a must own album for any megadeth fan, although i would recommend rust in peace first for newbies.
Metal where it begins !! .......2007-02-10
This is it , this is the real deal when it comes to Metal , this album is a timeless classic ! songs like "rattlehead" "chosen ones" & "Mechanix" (far better than metallicas take on this).
Nice that Dave remixed this , he really brought out the guitars & the vocals a lot more & got better seperation on everything .
This was a low budget album , but it's now at it's best , killer playing , killer songs & now killer sound ... turn this up!
METAL.......2006-11-16
this is a good metal album, not as good as other megadeth records but you can definitely see the potential there,i would recommend this to any metal fan
Awesome, awesome CD........2006-11-09
The 2nd heaviest MegadetH CD right behind "So Far, So Good... So What?" CD.
Not a bad song on this entire CD anywhere.
Many songs have a very early MetallicA feel to them, well that's b/c Dave wrote the good chunk of very early MetallicA's songs, that he never got credit for. But that's another story for another time.
Scott Ian from AnTHRaX writes up the review of the CD in the CD cover notes.
Dave writes some after-thoughts of this CD as well in the CD cover notes.
"These Boots" will not sound the same as it was on the original CD, b/c of the band being threatened by a law-suit from the original songwriter, so the band purposely screwed up the song and bleebed out much of the song to avoid a law-suit and by destroying the song, it was also making a joke and a statement to the original song-writer. (Dave explains all of this in the liner-notes in the CD cover).
No reverb sound on this CD, which is very nice. Although there is a lot of reverb sound on the demo songs, but what do you expect? Those demos are about 25 years old.
You are also going to hear some J.S. Bach Classical Music on here too at the beginning of "Last Rites / Loved to Deth" song. Don't freak out and think this is a Classical Music CD b/c the song starts out with J.S. Bach Classical Music.
"Mechanix" is the same song as "4 Horsemen" from MetallicA, but with completely different lyrics. Exact same music, different lyrics.
"This next song can be interpreted 2 ways: You have our way, and you have their (MetallicA's) way. Personally, I perfer our way the best. The next song is Mechanix." (What Dave said at the beginning of "Mechanix" on "Rude Awakening" 2-CD concert set).
You can't go wrong with this CD. You just can't go wrong with the first 4 MegadetH CDs.

How did serious efforts to combat racism go outta' style in Hip-Hop Land? Who knows. But the battle ain't over. Dead Prez would rather defend free speech and poor communities than waste their Warholian 15 minutes obsessing over booze, blunts, and hos. Dead Prez's lacerating lyrical stance is unapologetically socialist and pro-black, recalling X-Clan and Paris. This album is a recorded challenge to hardrocks to renew their sense of activism---Insane Clown Posse diehards need not apply. Neo-Black Panthers stic.man and M-1 attack a full spectrum of politically charged issues. Check the antiflossing manifesto "Hip Hop" ("Would you rather have a Lexus or justice?") which works well over brooding bass lines and bounce beats. On "Police State" the duo offer their take on police brutality while the Pan-Africanist "African" serves as a fitting ode to the Motherland. Interestingly, their revolutionary tactics are not just political, but rather serve as a rallying point for the mind, body, and soul. For the pro-vegetarianism of "Be Healthy" the duo somehow coax the usually juvenile Prodigy (of Mobb Deep) to wax about the evils of eating processed foods. Revolutionary indeed. And searing critiques of the powerful and corrupt continue on "They Schools," where the education system takes a lyrical beatdown over some synthesized string arrangements. Let's Get Free is geared toward those who would rather rage against the machine than be eaten by it. --Dalton Higgins
Customer Reviews:
"Classic" Under Rated and Under Appreciated.......2007-06-04
This album is simply a "Classic" hip hop album. I'm a fan of all genre's and a big fan of all styles of hip hop/rap. One problem with hip hop/rap is that it's not balanced. I think hip hop/rap is at its best when its balanced out but at the moment the south movement is dominating and albums like this one have been long forgotten.
I agree with Alan Pounds "music obsessor" (Minneapolis, MN) review to a certian degree. Dead Prez has a lot of powerful lyrics and if you listen closely you will definately come away with a different perspective on things. But I Agree with Mr. Pounds review because I think at times Dead Prez show the anger they have and it comes out like racist lyrics. I definetly understand where they coming from but harsh lyrics against white america is not going to help there cause. What is going to help there revolution is there facts and strong passion.
But as far as the sound of the album, the production on the album is second to none, it has the gritty early 90's sound. It doesn't have the futuristic neptunes or the scott storch or timberland sound. The production sounds more like old school mobb deep - wu tang clan. Though the lyrics tend to get harsh they are cleverly written and to the point. The whole mood of the album makes you wonder where have the complete albums gone. We hear great singles or we hear an album with 4-5 solid tracks out of 12-14 but where are the albums you can play through.
All in all if you are a fan of early 90's hip hop - NWA, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Public Enemy. Buy this ALBUM NOW. But if your more of a fan of today's hip hop and only today's hip hop TI - Lil Wayne - Young Jeezy - etc than you might need to skip this cd. But I still think someway or another you need to hear the cd so atleast download it or borrow it from a friend.
Final Words: Its a shame that albums like this today are not recognized, there is no outlet for this. You have to really love music and hunt this type of music down. I've known of dead prez because of the hit single hip hop, but never listened to them until now. I think people need to experience music like this and it would be nice if artist with a voice - 50 cent, TI, Lil Wayne, Jeezy, would use there voice to put some real talk on there albums. We all know they have money, we all know they have cars, and we all know you are from the ghetto. Hell I'm from the ghetto Jersey City, New Jersey. But use your voice, your talent to tell stories about things other than your greed or how many ways you can murder some one
The truth immortalized on plastic.......2007-05-27
I have to say the truth hurts doesn't it? I read some of these reviews about how dead prez is so racist and they write hateful lyrics. Lets get free is a direct product of what history created. So before you start throwing the rocks in your own racist glass house, make sure you take a good look in the mirror to evaluate yourself. Lets get free is a dope album that has the messages of health, hip hop, issues in the black community, as well as a tinge of gangsterism. I would definitely call these kats a cross between the geto boys, krs one, and public enemy ( a very potent mix). The album in my opinion gets an 10 on the richter scale. Beats, rhymes and life!!!!!!!
Dalton Higgins...........2007-05-12
I am a Juggalo, or as you put it, an "Insane Clown Posse diehard." And I really thought it was funny that you put that in your review. Not sure if you've ever listend to ICP, but they are very much against racism and very much for diversity.
As for Lets Get Free, it is a classic, true hip hop, album. In a time when most rap about money, drugs, cars and 'hoes,' DPs speak truth and try to open the minds of listeners. If you listen to Public Enemy, Paris, Black Star, etc... You probably already own this, but if you like the rap genre (be it 50 Cent or Insane Clown Posse), this is an album for your collection.
Thoughtful Rhymes From One Of Hip Hop's Revolutionary Groups (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-04-11
People complain about Dead Prez being racists and having their music targeted at white people clearly don't see the big picture within this album. This album isn't made just for black people. It was made for minorities in the world, in which case you can be African-American, White, Hispanic, Asian. In this case Dead Prez really speaks out on such issues that have affected our world today. And the thing about it is that most rap listeners can easily relate to what they are saying. I don't think anyone finds it amusing that many people goes and work extremely hard at their jobs, just to earn $6.00 an hour struggling to get by, while there are people who are at the top of the ladder eating off their hard work. That is why some people like Dead Prez, because they really tell it how it is in our society, and points out information that the govenment has really kept from us since day one (you'll be suprised how much info that they have withheld from us). And you know, it sucks too that this is they way we have to dig into the crates to find information that has been kept from some time. Artists like Public Enemy, Immortal Technique, BDP, and The Coup (my introduction to concious rap) expand on such issues that exposes us to way we are being forced to live, and the information that we have been enjected with since we were children, only to realize that it was all lies. You have to thank these guys for putting out some truthful music and tell it how it is, because rap music really needs something like this (but you have to think, what are the chances concious rap is going to be played on the radio, and people actualy listening to the lyrics now in 2007?). Chances are some of the people who bash this album and give it one star have absolutely no clue what is going on, or they probably grew up in upscale subarban neighborhoods where most likely never experienced something or cannot relate at all what is on this album, and are more than likely casual listeners to rap music (meaning they most likely get their source of hip hop and rap music from the radio). Albums such as this really shouldn't be taken offense to, unless you feel that it is directed to you. Then again, I've learned the power of words and how they can affect one person (especially with events going on today).
And as for "Lets Get Free", basically Dead Prez will touch on the subjects that I just mentioned in the previous paragrah. Most people will find their lyrics overshadowing the message that they are trying to send (using the word "C******"...being an black guy myself, I never use that word). The lyrical content is there as well as the message that is being transmitted. stic.man & M1 really deliver over nice production throughout this album. No, this album won't change the world or change the way hip hop and rap music is being transmitted (thanks to such organizations is the Federal Censorship Comittee), but this album will make you think about every day events going on. Also songs like "Be Healthy", "Dicipline", and "Mindsex" are other songs that describe the life we live. The latter song is a love track within the mind. "Lets Get Free" is a hip hop album that should be heard by everyone, because not too many albums really give in insight on today's world and how it affects everyone, no matter who you are. Peace!!
Top 5 Favorite Tracks:
1. Hip-Hop
2. 'They' Schools
3. Mind Sex
4. Police State
5. Animal In A Man
Update: To clear something up, yes Dead Prez were people who studied the Black Panther movements, and yes most of their songs are pro-African American, I realize that. I believe that some of the songs here do not just apply to that fact. Anybody can have a different interpetation on the songs here on this album. I'm a fan of Dead Prez and understand the message that they are trying to send, but I belive that it is sent to more than one group of people. Hate if you want and give an unhelpful vote if you want, but don't be like these people who leave comments who pretend like they know more than someone else in reality they're complete idiots.
dead prez maybe political, but even those with no interest in politics will enjoy........2006-11-11
dead prez are a political rap group, made in the same vein as Public Enemy. They described themselves as a deadly concoction of Public Enemy and N.W.A.; however, their messages are far more potent than Public Enemy, and their gangsta-ways aren't nearly as cartoony as the N.W.A.'s. Perhaps if Public Enemy or N.W.A. were around in the new millenium, they'd sound like this - but as it stands, this is strictly dead prez.
They're very pro-black, so expect that before coming into this. At the same time, don't allow that to turn you off from this music; even if their targets are those of the caucasian race, any head, from any creed of people, can feel their views. dead prez's message is universal; even if they weren't aiming for that. If you're still in school, you'll definitely feel a track like "They School" - and even if you're not currently attending school, they'll still make you look back on your tenure there, and shake your head along with them in agreement.
Phat beats and dope rhymes are the only formula for this album; something no head can argue with. Both stic.man and M1 are are talented young emcees, who are literally starving on the microphone - and they eat those mics alive throughout this album. It doesn't get much more raw, or passionate than dead prez's delivery on this album, and you'll definitely feel what they're saying, and how they're spitting it. The beats are absolutely phenomenal; honestly, this has some of the flyest production I've heard on any hip-hop album. Pure hip-hop beats with one hell of a hardcore edge, and eerie samples scattered throughout. I honestly can't give the production credit with words, because it's just so unbelievably dope and consistent.
Like I mentioned in the title, you don't have to have any true interest in politics to enjoy this album at all - you have to be a hip-hop head. dead prez maybe about their message first, but in no way does this music suffer from this - in fact, their music is ten times better because of it. This album sounds like the score to a revolution; proving dead prez succeeded in everything they set out to do, and more. Pick it up, as you won't regret it.

Common's flow on here is somewhere between Q-Tip, Busta & Charlie Brown's of LONS. It's hard to tell on here if Common is repping NY or his hometown of Chicago. His whole persona on this joint is straight New York. Other than that, it's a dope introduction to the homeboy Common.

Common is one of the best rappers hands down. I think this CD is good but "Like Water for Chocolate" is sicker. One track that you heads need to hear is a white label edit on vinyl by Karu featuring Common called "Faces on the Mural". This is deep house at it's finest with the ripe vocals of Common. You guys should check out Karu's "Amazing Place" CD for some great deep jazzy house & trip-hop. Wow! I can't believe it. I just bought the Illform "Next Level Fusion" & Quentin's Ladder "Delusion" on here and realized Quentin Allen produced all these including Karu "Amazing Place". Don't be fooled! This definitely is not Quentin's first CD. It is the third CD and maybe the best. People need to check out this music. The jazz & hip-hop influences are all there and come together nicely. My favorite track is "Out to Get Mine" Hot EPMD vocal snippet. Another great track is "Sketch the Play". You'll here a great texture of sounds too. Rhodes & acoustic pianos, synths, deep basslines, great vocal samples, tight house beats, awesome jazz solos and nice chords. The Karu sound is like deep house by Hanna, Office Gossip, Miguel Miggs, and Chuck Love. If you want to here a great producer at work, get Quentin Allen latest offering "Amazing Place".

I Liked Common when his syles was like it was on this album.
He has more explicive lyrics than be. But on Resurection
He had a totaly different style. But he wasn't considered
Gangsta Rap at all.
Common Classic.......2005-07-03
Just recently bought this album and it's a classic. Common's not as polished as his later days, but it's still an amazing album and should be in every hip-hop fan's collection.
If you are just getting into Common check this album out!.......2005-06-06
I really, really, really liked Common Sense in 1992. "Take It Easy" was like my theme song during my senior year of high school, and being from Chicago I was really glad to see a Chicago MC doing his thing. If you didn't get into Common until later, "Can I Borrow A Dollar," might come as a bit of a suprise to you. In the beginning, even with the first single "Take It Easy," Common seemed much more light hearted and comedic along the lines of The Pharcyde or Busta Rhymes. Musically, it was a good album and the second single "Breaker 1-9" got heavy rotation on The Box like the first single. If you are just getting into Common check this album out.

My Intro to Hip Hop.......2006-07-05
I was 16 years old when this cd dropped, and I didn't listen to hip hop at all at the time. I was a skateboarder, and all I listened to was punk rock back then. I didn't really get the slang, styles, or concepts of hip hop; and I never really gave hip hop a chance before this cd came out. However, I do remember a lot of my friends telling me how nice The Wu were, and how excited they were when this cd was released.
After seeing the video for "Triumph" a few times, I knew that The Wu were dope. I didn't realize it at the time, but "Triumph" actually changed my whole perspective of hip hop. To this day, I believe that this song is the best posse cut ever. Inspectah Dek and Method Man jump start this song with incredible back to back verses, and the beat is epic. I've heard this song hundreds of times, but I still get amped whenever it's playing. Everyone spits a good verse on this song, and the energy of the track is incredible.
"It's Yourz" is another classic. This is a great closing track for disc 1. Similar to "Triumph", this song has a lot of energy. It also has a great hook. This time it's The Rza and Inspectah Dek who lace the track with the most memorable verses.
A lot of people hate on this cd, but I don't understand why. Although "Wu-Tang Forever" is not anywhere near as raw as "36 Chambers", it is definitely more lyrical. I don't agree with all these filler complaints either. I have listened to both of these discs repetitively for nearly a decade, and the only tracks I skip aren't actual songs.
My favorite tracks include:
Disc 1
Reunited-great verses from The Gza and Meth
Visionz-great Production from The Rza
Older Gods-love the beat and Ghostface's verse
It's Yourz-see Inspectah Dek verse
Disc 2
Triumph-The Anthem
Little Ghetto Boys-one of Cappadonna's more memorable verses
Hellz Wind Staff-dope song w/ martial arts vibe
Heaterz-another great beat courtesy of The Rza
The Last Words: Classic cd. It honestly changed my life.

Some rappers die because they get shot. Some die of AIDS. But corpulent Latino rapper Big Punisher died of a massive coronary; at the time of his February 2000 death, he weighed over 600 pounds. While this made Punisher a suitable poster boy for the dangers of conspicuous consumption, on his platinum 1998 debut album, Capital Punishment, he's eager to poke fun at the creed of greed: "I'm not a player", he announces, "I just fuck a lot." But while Capital Punishment is perfectly adequate gangsta fare, Big Pun doesn't deserve the deification that dead rappers so frequently receive; here, he deviates little from the egomaniacal posturing that the Notorious B.I.G. branded his own. "If it doesn't make dollars, then it doesn't make sense," splutters compadre Fat Joe on "Glamour Life." Suitable, then, that Big Pun died in an industry where rigor mortis is the ultimate unit-shifter. --Louis Pattison

Lyrical Genius......R.I.P.......2007-03-23
Now, I am not the one to give respect to albums regardless if the artist is gone from this world. I am the first to call it like I see it. However, I can't front....Capital Punishment is probably one of the greatest hip hop albums to be released ever. The late Christopher Rios with the help of his "twin" Fat Joe puts out what might not have even been anticipated but on time with this solid debut. Pun's word play and lyrical prowess, in my opinion, would take mentor Fat Joe out in a freestyle competition any day. Pun's production is quite possibly the best compliment to this gem and the guest appearances are on time and on point. My favorite would have to be "Punish Me" featuring Miss Jones, displaying Pun's lyricism in reference to love, relationships and fatherhood. My second fav would have to be the posse cut "Glamour Life" showing Pun and his fellow Terror Squadians speaking of aspirations of fame and fortune(which is not one of my favorite topics in hip hop however when you have an excellent lyrical delivery on this subject I will make an exception). In short, this is a must have from quite possibly the "best" member of the Terror Squad camp.
Remarkable...the album behind the legend.......2006-12-18
During Big Pun's unfortunately short lifetime, he released only one album, 1998's "Capital Punishment," and with this one release he amassed the reputation of one of New York's greatest MCs ever. Listening to this album, it's not hard to see why. Pun shows simply amazing technique, lyricism, and versatility on the album that made him the first Latino rapper to go platinum. Pun flawlessly tells stories of crime and dangers in the streets of the Bronx, but he also makes some deeper tracks about life and philosophy. He is simply an awesome lyricist. Also, the group of guest rappers is among the best ever assembled for an album. In addition to his group of Terror Squad peers such as Fat Joe, Cuban Link, and Noreaga, other appearances come from rap legends like Prodigy, Busta Rhymes, Inspectah Deck, Black Thought, Dead Prez, , and singers such as Joe, Wyclef Jean, and Miss Jones. The production is outstanding throughout the album, coming from such accomplished beatmakers as the RZA, L.E.S., Rockwilder, and Dr. Dre. Overall this album is a complete classic that deserves to be a part of any hip hop collection.
After the intro, the album begins with "Beware," starting the album with a hard lyrical track with great production. "Super Lyrical" is just that, a collaboration with Roots rapper Black Thought. "Still Not a Player" was Pun's most successful single, the song that made him famous and a legendary classic. Over an awesome, Latin-inspired beat, Pun drops hilarious, well delivered verses in between great singing from Joe, who also sings the classic outro. "The Dream Shatterer" is very well produced and is a hard, street-level song. Miss Jones collaborates on "Punish Me," one of my favorite songs on the album. With a subdued, thoughtful beat, Big Pun talks about a relationship gone sour. "You Ain't a Killer" is another New York classic. The hard piano laced beat fits great with Pun's threatening lyrics and great punchlines. "Glamour Life" features the Terror Squad, where they talk about the reaps of a life of crime over a great beat. The title track follows in the trend of hard, well-produced tough songs. On "I'm Not a Player," Pun speaks again of his character and interactions with women, the song utilizes a great soul sample. "Twinz (Deep Cover 98)" is a cover of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's classic song from 1992, where Pun and Fat Joe collaborate for one of the best songs from either one of their catalogs. I really like the interlude "The Rain and the Sun" with Dead Prez, it's relaxing. "You Came Up" may actually be my favorite song on the disc, though. With Noreaga, Pun discusses his rise to the top of hip hop, and the saxophone loop is perfect, Terror Squad always shines on this type of song. RZA produces "Triboro Trilogy," a standard New York anthem featuring legends Inspectah Deck and Prodigy. "Fast Money" tells an awesome story, and the album finishes with the Busta Rhymes-assisted "Parental Discretion," where the rappers warn parents of the dangers of raising children in the ghetto and exposing them to the dangers.
"Capital Punishment" is so amazing because it is a perfect combination of a truly special MC, great guest appearances, awesome production, and perfect execution. This album is so complete and well rounded, easily one of the best albums from the late 90s. I recommend this album to all kinds of hip hop fans, it has something everyone can enjoy, because it's such a classic.
The heart of the terror squad.......2006-11-20
Just like Biggie, when I hear a rapper called the greatest ever, and he only has 2 albums I laugh. Big Pun is nowhere near the G.O.A.T. Had he lived a lot longer, He would be a contender. This album is a classic. For a guy so heavy, he had amazin breath control. The Dream Shatterer in my opinion showcased his best lyrical arsenal. Thats my absolute favorite. But there are a lot of standout tracks on this album. In fact this is one of the very few albums I can listen to straight through. Highly recommended. He was a very big loss to hip hop. The death of him, Pac, and Big only prove how bad the game needs real rappers.
Big Pun was better than his proteges.......2006-11-03
Standout tracks: BEWARE, SUPER LYRICAL(excellent match up with Black Thought), THE DREAM SHATTERER, PUNISH ME, YOU AINT A KILLER, CARIBBEAN CONNECTION(Wyclef killed it!), GLAMOUR LIFE, CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, TWINZ(Deep Cover 98), BOOMERANG, YOU CAME UP and FAST MONEY. Filler: Tres Leches(both Podigy and Inspectah Deck had suspect verses)and Parental Discretion(sleep inducing). Bottom Line: Big Pun was the best thing that came out of that camp(Terror Squad). He had a killer flow and witty punchlines that kept you listening for more. Songs like Super Lyrical, The Dream Shatterer, Beware etc showed you that Pun was a force to be reckoned with. His untimely death was unfortunate especially at a time when we need more like him in this game. RIP BIG PUN.
Holds well over the years........2006-09-09
...And yes, I can proudly say that I was listening to this stuff whenever Pun was still alive and the album was just recently out. Putting everything aside, though, "Capital Punishment" is a nearly flawless album and one of the few great mainstream hip-hop albums of the past ten years. Listening to the album gives me a kind of nostalgia as well, since there was so much great music released back then, and hip-hop was a lot better (DMX's first album, Lauryn's solo album, OutKast's "Aquemini", etc). I remember I really enjoyed hearing "Still Not a Player", a part-remixed, part-new song that had a really catchy tune and awesome flow. A track for anyone who likes a track you can hear at the club, R&B or hip-hop.
Many talk about how someone his size can flow so fast is impressive. However, even if it were someone of any other size it would have been just as good an album. The quality of it is mainly in his delivery and the content of the flows. You'll hear it in "Beware", "Super Lyrical" (with Black Thought; the greatest track on the album), "The Dream Shatterer" and even in "Twinz", a track with Fat Joe that updates the Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg single "Deep Cover." There's also greatness like in the childhood reflection of the title track or the rising of fame in "You Came Up", one of the more catchy tracks in here. Even "Punish Me" is great, a song of a broken relationship, never getting mysogynic or anything like that.
Some may not like the many interludes in the album, but I'm totally fine with those. I like the intro and how "Charlie Rock Skit" is basically a brief intro to the next track, "Fast Money." Some are kind of entertaining to hear like the two "Pakinamac" tracks. Sometimes the tracks can be pretty funny though, like in "Uncensored" with Funkmaster Flex.
Another shocking quality is that a lot of the "superstar" songs are the more weaker tracks on the album, and for me even more since those were some of my favorite mainstream rappers (Wyclef, Busta).
I'd say that if you like any kind of hip-hop that you will most likely enjoy "Capital Punishment", an album that is surprisingly well-aged in time. Pun may have had a short career, but in the time he delivered some of the greatest stuff around.

ESSENTIAL Thrash Record.......2007-06-19
Exodus, in my opinion, do not get the credit that they deserve. They tend to get overlooked when talking about thrash metal bands, probably because they weren't as well-known as the more influential groups like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, or Anthrax. However, I like to credit Exodus as being a TRUE thrash metal band through and through. For instance, Metallica changed when the 90s hit. The image, the attitude, the music; they all were altered drastically due to probably fame and popularity. Anthrax and Megadeth as well changed their purposes for rocking, the former mixing rap and metal (yuck) and the latter wanting that #1 spot ever so bad (with Countdown to Extinction) and also making a commercialized pop-metal album called Risk. They were losing their edge, conforming if you will, to the demands of popularity, success, and commercial status.
But not Exodus. No, these guys were pure metal dirtbags from their rotted black teeth to their fungus-infected toenails. Never did they falter, never did they conform to the wishes of the media. Exodus' front man for this album, Paul Bailoff, in fact, was probably thee biggest metalhead of thrash, maybe surpassed only by Cliff Burton. His voice, if you've never heard him, is very unique for a thrash singer. He reminds me of Tom Araya from Slayer in the menacing way he presents the vocals and he's also similar to James Hetfield a little, cause he uses that screechy, high-pitched vocal style straight from the throat. The guy would go up to people wearing glam metal shirts, tear `em up, and wear them around his arm like trophies for God's sake; how metal is that? Anyway, this underrated band can not be tossed away like some ratty hair metal t-shirt (whoops). Bonded by Blood is easily a top-10 necessity if you wanna get into thrash metal and will be remembered by thrashers for years to come.
Many people deem Exodus' guitar riffs generic and ordinary (most likely for the sole reason of raw production), but truthfully Exodus' riffs have a great deal of substance to them and pack heavy punches. How can any metalhead NOT headbang to the main riff of "And Then There Were None"? I mean, the first few measures of the riff draw you in tight, but then the pounding drums come in and then you really can't stand still. And of course you got Paul reaching into the bowels of Hell and expressing some real malignant images as well, so really the whole bit's just unadulterated thrash. Oh, and if want catchy riffs just get an earful of the title track, "Exodus", or a little dose of "Piranha", which has a brief but driving drum intro, one of my favorite verse riffs that has sort of a Jon Schaffer (from Iced Earth) touch going, and some wicked-a$$ solos which ice the cake.
"Bonded by Blood" not only contains a catchy riff, but the chorus is insanely memorable and a great shout-along, on which Bailoff really delivers. "A Lesson in Violence" and "Metal Command" are fast-paced metal blasts with menacing vocals from Paul and driving, in-your-face thrash riffs; both add a great deal to the album. The solo on "Metal Command" is quite noodly and soaring as well, and the chorus on "Lesson in Violence" is definitely a highlight. "No Love" opens with an acoustic passage showcasing Exodus' classical side, but in no time, another infectious riff creeps up and we have another amazing song on our hands. "Deliver Us to Evil" is somewhat epic (7:10 long) and is one of the best off the album. Paul's vocals are awesome on this track and the chorus is something special too. Last but never least, the closer, "Strike of the Beast" ends the album off on an incredible note. This number has great gang vocals at the chorus and some more evil vocals from Paul.
So Bonded By Blood, while not THEE most influential thrash record, can not be taken lightly nor can it be disregarded. Yes Triple B might not be as good as more "classic" thrash albums (Master of Puppets, Peace Sells, Reign in Blood) but ask almost any diehard thrash fan, and they'll tell you, Bonded By Blood is a must have and essential for any metalheads collection.
Bonded by Blood.......2007-05-12
Vocals are terrible, they are more like talking instead of singing. I'm selling the CD because it is so bad.
Old School 80's Thrash Baby!!.......2007-01-23
Words just can't describe how great Exodus's debut album "Bonded by Blood" really is. I mean this is without a doubt one of the greatest thrash metal albums of the 80's. Whenever I listen to this album, I always get a serious kick of adrenaline rush. I mean this album is just heavy, fast, crazy, take no BS, in your face, headbanging old school thrash from start to finish. "Bonded by Blood" of course would be the first and only Exodus album with Paul Baloff on vocals. His vocals on here are just angry and all out pissed off throughout. Gary Holt and Rick Hunolt are very awesome guitarists. These guys rip right through your skin with wild thrashing riffs, and crazy fast dualing solos like a race car driver going 100 miles per hour. Rob McKillop's bass is pretty good, and Tom Hunting's drumming is just fast and all out merciless. Every song on here is just full of fast, crazy, thrashing heaviness, and very mosh pit worthy as well, including "Bonded by Blood", "Exodus", "Piranha", "Metal Command", "And Then There Were None", "Strike of the Beast", and of course "A Lesson in Violence" which is wihtout question one of Exodus's best songs ever and a true I DON'T GIVE A CRAP attitude like anthem as well. There's also some bonus live versions of "And Then There Were None", and "A Lesson in Violence" too. Bottom Line is this, if you're looking for some old school 80's thrash metal to just bang your head like freakin crazy, then by all means, you must own this album. LONG LIVE EXODUS!! R.I.P. PAUL BALOFF!!

Top 3 of Thrash .......2006-07-01
Around 1984, thrash metal was born as the b*stard child of Motorhead (Overkill, 1979), the Dead Kennedys (Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, 1980), Venom (Welcome to Hell, 1981) and Metallica (Kill em All, 1983). Three albums can be seen as defining this genre: Exodus' "Bonded by Blood" (recorded in 1984), Destruction's "Infernal Overkill" (1985) and Slayer's "Reign in Blood" (1986).
Going beyond the more 'civilised' speed/thrash metal of NWOBHM-influenced US bands like Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth, 'real' thrash metal was characterized by a very straightforward, aggressive and more black metal & hardcore punk influenced style. You might say that Exodus contributed the basic song blueprints and overall brutality to thrash metal; Destruction provided a unique combination of intelligent, intricate songwriting and sheer intensity (the US market, mostly ignorant of the European scene, had to wait for Death Angel to deliver this kind of combo); and with Slayer everything culminated into the Reign in Blood landmark that is still the major achievement of the genre.
"Bonded by Blood" is basically one adrenalin rush from start to finish. Most songs are great, and often even quite memorable if you listen to them one by one ("And then there were none", "Lesson in Violence", "Metal Command, "Strike of the Beast", ..) but on the album they blend into such a rollercoaster of excitement and aggression, that after the album is over it's hard to remember any particular highlights.
With this head start, Exodus was predicted a rosy future among the very greats of metal. Alas, the over-the-top-but-in-a-stupid-kind-of-way lyrics already testified of the not-too-sane state of mind of singer Paul Bailoff, and in effect he was kicked out soon after making this first album. After this, Exodus reverted to a more normal but also much more boring approach, making "Bonded By Blood" the only must-have album in their discography until today.
BONDED BY THRASH...........2006-01-06
This is the debut album of one of the greatest thrash metal bands ever which is Exodus. If you just started to listen to metal you might propely be more familar with the albums Tempo Of The Damned or Shovel Head Kill Machine but this album is one million times better than those two albums put together. The music is so fast and crazy. I can't believe that kirk Hammet left Exodus and now Exodus is like way more popular than Metallica. The song Bonded By Blood is one of my favorite songs by Exodus.
The lyrics to me are no different than any of the four original Metallica or Megadeth albums which means that they are good. The lyrics fit the music perfect and the lyrics and the music are so complexed.
This is just as good as Metallica or Megadeth. Exodus to me is underated a little. They are like five times better than anything you hear on television or the radio. The most impressive song on this album to me is Strike Of The Beast. I hope that Exodus plan on releasing more albums like a year or two in the future seeing that they just released Shovel Head Kill Machine.

Why don't you - PULL THE PLUG!!!.......2007-06-08
Its obvious that calling any Death CD great is an understatement but I really love Leprosy. Its raw and brutal and the defintion of what a death metal CD should be. I love all the Death CDs but this one finds my CD player more than any other one not named Symbolic.
Pull the Plug has got to be one of the tightest death metal songs written and there are highlights galore on this baby. If you like Death and don't have this one you are retarded. Period.
Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-03-23
For this merely being Death's second album, it is amazing the extent of maturity they have gone through from Scream Bloody Gore. Of course, Death is still presenting us with a tasty plate of raw, crushing brilliance that was trademarked by their first album, but the songs are beginning to sound more structured. Chuck's vocals are much, much better (at least to me) than from Scream Bloody Gore and the overall sound quality seems to be at an equilibrium between polished and raw. It is still, by all standards, fairly typical old-school death metal, but it is above par in comparison to many of the bands of that day and age. Brutal, fast, and top to bottom quality DM.
Song Favorites: "Born Dead," "Left to Die," "Pull the Plug," and "Open Casket." (Open Casket is my all time fav)
Very Good.......2007-01-17
Back when I first bought this album, I would've given it a five star rating. However, now being familiar with Death's other releases, I have to say that Leprosy is far from my favorite. The album at times kind of gets repetitive. Overall, it's a worthy Death release, but if you are new to Death I suggest getting Symbolic or Human before checking Leprosy out.

Excellent folow up.......2006-11-10
The second installment of Chuck Schuldiner's group DEATH entitled LEPROSY is nothing short of amazing. The songs deal with several issues as pertinent then as they are today . "Born dead" explores abortion and "Pull the plug" explores the right of a person to terminate his or her own life. Incidentally these have been hotly debated issues during he mid term campaigns in the USA. Pro Life...Pro choice.Eusthanasia... Mr Schuldiner had an opinion about each and all of them. The musicianship is not as tight as the following releases but the solos are still mind blowing. Production is very good and all those seeking for clasic Death Metal will see their cravings very well satisfied. It is only too bad that Chuck Schuldiner is not with us anymore after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
Excellent early-days metal band.......2006-10-30
Death is one of those bands who fell through the cracks to some degree and never really received the full respect and recognition they truly deserve. Chuck Schuldiner, in my opinion, is one of the better heavy metal writers and guitarists to come along and I've heard a lot in my life (hint: I'm over 40).
"Leprosy," being Death's second album, stands out as one of the classic death/speed metal albums of all-time. Granted, Death's music changed dramatically as their career grew and transformed into the great releases such as "Symbolic," and "The Sound of Perseverance." But for those albums to have ever existed "Leprosy" first had to come.
My favorite songs from "Leprosy" are:
1. Primitive Ways - Wow. What a driving, pounding, relentless example of pure heavy metal power. Rip-sawing guitars tear away following the initial drum roll to open the song. This is one of my top ten all-time heavy metal songs.
2. Left To Die - My first thoughts when hearing this song is their introduction on the live video, "Ultimate Revenge II." This is Death in one of my favorite periods when they were still raw but very much refined. A very good, driving, maniacal heavy metal song that stands out amongst others.
3. Pull The Plug - A guitar masterpiece that, like so many Death songs, pounds and pounds and pounds and then pounds some more.
All in all, Death is one of those gems who will eventually receive the credit they're due. As more people hear them and find out about them more people will realize just how great they really are.
R.I.P. Chuck Schuldiner

While Gov't Mule is spearheaded by ex-Allman Brothers Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, this isn't so much a "jam band" as a power trio. Cream, Mountain, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience provide more accurate points of reference than the Grateful Dead. Not that Gov't Mule isn't interested in improvisational probing. For example, "Trane" explores John Coltrane by way of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This debut displays a high level of communication, cohesion, and musicianship, indicating this Mule can handle a considerable workload. --Richard Gowen

Government Mule.......2007-07-20
My friend Vinnie in Germany recommended this band, and I like the CD I ordered. Their sound is definitely hard core rock, great guitar work!
Must Have Gov't Mule .......2007-02-14
Gov't Mule's self-titled debut Jams from beginning to end, and is an essential addition to any CD collection. The Allman Brothers meets Led Zepplin. Truly a must have.
Mule rules!.......2006-11-10
One of the best blues/rock CD I've ever heard and possibly my favorite Gov't Mule album. In my opinion Warren Haynes is the best blues/rock guitar player at the moment, with lots of jazz influences (listen to 'Trane'). Killer riffs, great melodies, fantastic improvisation. Everybody who like Cream, Hendrix, Clapton and the 60's/70's classic rock bands must listen to this album.
WOW.......2006-04-14
This is the best music that I've heard from Govt Mule. The only thing that I can compare this with is seeing them live. It took me a week to get this cd back from my wife. I had to make her a copy.
Awesome Album.......2006-02-27
I got this CD two days ago, after knowing about the band for probably less than two weeks. I listened to some song samples and decided they were my new favorite band.
This is one of the few CD's I can listen to, back to front, without getting bored of any song. Warren's guitar playing is incredible, and It's no wonder he had to overdub vocals on nearly all of the songs. Allen Woody (Rest in Peace) was also a great bass player, and you can actually hear the bass on this CD, as opposed to most other bands where you just sort of feel the notes. Matt Abts, a great drummer, completes this Southern/Blues Rock Power Trio. And I won't leave out mentioning Warren's awesome blues singing. Overall, a great album, good sound quality, and I especially appreciate the fact that Warren uses Gibson electric guitars on most of the tracks (except the two that are a vocal solo and an acoustic song), my axe of choice. I just wish I could play like him. If you are a Southern Rock, Blues, or Classic Rock fan, I highly reccomend this album to you. You WILL NOT be dissapointed.
Hope this review helped.
