4 out of 5 stars Heavenly Live!..........2007-05-07

If you are a devoted fan of the ANGEL group, this is great recording to listen: In 1980, the band presented this to the approval of their audiences; showing their musical capability and stage presence Full of pyrotechnics and magic illusions; but the most important thing...the emotion, the music, was there!...They showed their dextresity with themes like Tower, Can you feel it, Telephone exchange, Don't leave me lonely, Feeling right, White Lightning, Hold me squeeze me or Rock & Rollers; with extended solos from Gregg Guiffria, Punky Meadows, Barry Brandt and a little one by Felix Robinson on Bass ("Over & Over"), making it a great show...

The extended keyboard solo of Gregg Giuffria, (just before the track "On the Rocks"), showed his dextresity, letting us know, the major league kind of a great kekboardist he was... Since the first two recordings: Angel (1975) and Helluva Band (1976), we put him at the side of keyboardist like Keith Emerson (E.L.P.), Rick Wakeman (Yes), Tony Banks (Genesis), Eddie Jobson (U.K.) or Kerry Minnear (Gentle Giant) masters of Progressive Rock.

Punky Meadows, in the Rock & Rollers song did a great bunch of classic fast licks that for moments resembles the influence of Jeff Beck (the "Blow by Blow" recording). I must Say that the sound guitar and playing style of Punky is very distictive and original...

By the other side this recording brings two live different tracks from the official discography (at least in these moment): "Twenty Century Foxes" (From the motion picture FOXES and now at the "Anthology" CD), and "All the Young Dudes" (a well known Mott the Hopple's song). This CD is a great prove of their technical habilities and an outstanding landmark of their compositional talents!...Good Luck!

A Band that should have been much bigger than they were.

4 out of 5 stars welcome re-issue .......2007-02-28

I had this album from the start on vinyl and must admit that the soundquality of this remastered 2006 CD is far better. Everything falls in place, even the bombs on the first track "Tower" are noticeable, as I did not before. Musically spoken the material is heavier, the rythmsection is more powerfull and especially the synthesizers and leadguitar flourish. That is not to say of the bulk of the songs, "Tower" apart. "Rock an Rollers", a good song (from the first album) is underbroken for a guitarsolo, I'd rather seen that on one of the weakier songs which would have taken profit by that. Although recorded in 1978, before the release of the 1979 studio-album "Sinful" (formely "Bad Reputation") it contains nevertheless "Wild & Hot" from that album. Furthermore there is the Bowie written but Mott the Hoople performed "All the Young Dudes" which doesn't add anything in the way Angel performes it. Finally the album ends with a song that must be seen as something of a bonus because it was not part of the show and therefore not recorded live (although audience can be heard), the filmsoundtrack "20th Century Foxes", which could have been taken from the first album but isn't and should have been added to anyone of the others as only one of the scare qualitysongs. Angel could deliver but failed to do so by writing the wrong songs, aiming not towards rockfans, the way KISS did (which is hardrock neither), although having a spectacular liveshow, but attracting only young girls with glampop and lyrics dominated by the "L-word" and therefore hardly selling albums in terms of finance. Shortly thereafter the band fragmented. This album is a good souvenir from lost times.

3 out of 5 stars Great album but bad disk.......2006-11-20

I loved this album, I bought all the studio albums when the we released on cd. but I waited too long for this one. I did not want to buy it for what some people were selling it for(it had been out of print). So I waited and hoped it would be released again. And it finally wuz. So I bought it. Warning. BGO a small English label put this out. What a shame. Some of the quality is poor. lots of crackling in the background of some songs. But it is better than spending 50 for it from some people.

In the mass of singer/songwriters that seem to surface weekly it is easy to forget that older masters of the craft still walk among us and offer vital work. Janis Ian's brilliant 2000 release God & the FBI got lost in this glut--more's the pity. Working Without A Net sums up a career to date that while producing the justly famous "Society's Child," "At Seventeen," and "Jesse," also given us such lesser known gems as "Love Is Blind," "Boots Like Emmy Lou's," and many of the others included here. Over a decade's worth of live performances reveal an emotionally wrenching singer, a fine guitarist, and a remarkably consistent writer. Hopefully Working Without A Net will make people want to go back and explore gems like Breaking Silence, and the aforementioned God & the FBI. At the very least it raises the bar for the current crop of would-be troubadours. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Society's Child is also "Great" live !.......2004-06-18

This 2CD set is brand new(2003)and the live 2 track recordings are from 1990 -2003. The excellently recorded songs are from over 30 yrs of a fine collection of the supurb songs most written by Janis herself. These songs take you all the way back to her first hit "Society's Child" when she was 14 years old. Excellent Sound, Unbeatable Singing, and No Waste of Track Room, both CDs are loaded with real treasure. What more can be said ! For the person that does not know much about Janis Ian buy this set, it has most of her famous songs and it's a great place to start ! "Enjoy"

5 out of 5 stars Who needs a net when you can soar like this?.......2004-04-16

Stop reading these reviews and order this CD! If Janis isn't coming to your town, this is the next best thing to seeing her live. She is authentic, warm, funny and amazingly gifted.

Her songs have a social consciousness without being preachy. Who do you think paved the way for Suzanne Vega, Alanis Morisette, and the rest of those female singer-songwriters? Janis wrote the book on great writing. She knows how to weave a lyric that lingers for days around your heart.

This is a woman whose had an amazing 40 year career and shows no sign of slowing down. With age usually comes wisdom. Janis was wise beyond her years as a teenager. I think she has many great songs left to write, but this CD gives you a great overview of her music.

You walk into her show wondering how you'll be entertained by a four foot nothing middle aged Jewish lesbian. Buy the CD and you'll understand. JANIS ROCKS!

5 out of 5 stars Unlike other "live" CD's........2004-04-06

Unlike other live CD's, this double-CD set is really "live" - recorded direct to 2-track, without edits. And isn't it wonderful to really be able to sit in on a Janis Ian concert? Ian makes her feelings about downloading and home taping known with her choice of the final track, her own version of "These Boots Are Made For Walking", which was recorded on minidisc by a fan sitting next to the mix board!
If you loath the RIAA policies, you should support Janis Ian, and read the article "The Internet Debacle" on her website at www.janisian.com!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Super Live Set.......2004-01-31

I've enjoyed some great 2 CD live sets such as Bonnie Raitt's "Road Tested," Laura Nyro's "The Loom's Desire" and the James Taylor "Live" set. Janis Ian's "Working Without A Net" ranks right up with the best. First of all, a prerequisite for me, the sound quality is excellent. In the excellent notes in the booklet, she details how this was recorded on two-track, not multi-tracked and edited and cleaned up in the studio. What we hear is what happened live.

From the opening drums on "This Train Still Runs" and the train whistle blowing, we can tell we're in for a great bash. "Fly Too High" was not one I was familiar with, but it's great jazzy rendition written with Giorgio Moroder makes me hit repeat. The hits "Jesse," "Stars," & "Society's Child" shimmer like familiar jewels in new settings. The humor songs "Boots Like Emmy Lou's" & "Cosmopolitan Girl" are great fun. "Honor Them All" which I first became acquainted with on the Mothers Against Drunk Drivers CD works well as recorded in Japan. Janis talks about feeling sad when listening to "Silly Habits" because she injured her hand & will never play piano again as she did that night in Holland. The CD concludes with the wacked out version of "These Boots Were Made for Walking" which is great fun.

Janis writes, "The relationship between performer & audience at a live show is fascinating, energizing, amazing. A good audience feeds you, makes you want to exceed your best. And a good performance feeds the audience, making them feel that you're speaking to them directly." Janis indeed accomplishes this on "Working Without A Net." She & Oh Boy Records have picked some blockbuster performances from her many live tapes. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars What Janis Ian fans have waited for.......2004-01-03

This is a CD that captures the experience of Janis Ian in concert. Those who know Janis' music and concerts understand the depth of her writing and performances. From the inspirational This Train Still Runs through the power and emotion of the classic Society's Child and Tattoo, this CD shows the range of talent and hard work that have made Janis Ian one of music's most worthwhile listens.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Getz album.......2004-03-14

A beautiful album. "What Do You Want" is one of my very favorite songs of all time. It's an evocative, melancholy reflection, with a particularly memorable line: "Sometimes there is just too much "after' in your afternoon."

Getz is a gifted performer and songwriter who deserves to be widely heard.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasing voice and acoustic guitar.......2003-05-19

A pleasing voice, heart-felt lyrics and a guitar is all she needs to make beauiful music and a new fan.

5 out of 5 stars That beautiful voice and guitar is all she needs........2003-05-18

My favorite CD of Kerry's, as brief as it is. It showcases her sublime skills at singing and guitar playing, stripped down and pure, the way she shines the best. This CD contains several of my favorite songs of hers: "Why am I So Uncool?" "The Forgiveness Hoop" and the heart-breaking "What Do You Want," one of the deepest and truest songs I've ever heard, by anyone. This is a perfect CD for those listeners out there who don't know Kerry, because you'll hear her the way all of her fans have heard her over the years, on her own at the mike with only her beautiful voice to carry you away.

5 out of 5 stars Live at the Galaxy.......2003-05-14

Great introduction to a wonderful singer/songwriter. And at $... per song it's a great bargain.

As I listened to this CD, I had to keep remembering that there is no band. Just Kerry and her guitar. The sound was so full. Each song highlights her unique guitar playing and the lyrical strength of her voice.

I was hooked by the first song "Why Am I So Uncool" (who can't relate to this feeling at some point in their life) and I loved her rendition of "Walk Away Renee".

5 out of 5 stars kerry does it again!.......2003-05-13

Kerry's sultry voice will captivate you in Another Fine Mess; and After All This Time touches your soul.

A friend recently lent me his copy of this album to dub for him. I'll admit that during the 70's in Angel's heyday, I was listening to KISS and Cheap Trick records heavily, but somehow never got to hear anything by Angel until now. This double live LP won me over, especially Greg Giuffria and Barry Brandt's playing. They were a tight band in their day. Too bad there's not much visual documentation (at least to my knowledge) of the band live other than photos here and on the internet. Gene Simmons helped these guys get signed and promptly pulled the rug out from under them when he forbid them from playing together with KISS. It's a shame that this live LP came at the very end of their career. There was a brief reunion of a few of the members in the studio and a short tour in 1999, but I believe that was to be all for Angel's output. Good hooky songs, great playing, good times...
    Enjoy...

        5 out of 5 stars A Warm, Inviting Album.......2006-10-13

I really like this CD. It's a live recording, and it not only sounds intimate but also feels intimate. Noah Peterson's sax sounds so warm, so smooth...it just puts me right in the crowd. A better-sounding sax I haven't heard in a long time. I highly recommend this album.
