How did two Mexican-born heavy-metal enthusiasts end up at the top of the Irish charts? The story begins back in their homeland, where Rodrigo Sanchez (lead guitar) and Gabriela Quintero (rhythm and guitar-top hand percussion) met as teenagers. Following years of fruitless struggle, they settled in Dublin, working as street entertainers, eventually wandering as far afield as Denmark and Spain. But over time, their virtuoso duo-guitar instrumentals garnered them a following, which in turn led to indoor engagements where they no longer had to freeze their hands off. And no wonder -- their eruptive mixture of Central and South American folkways, with its propulsive rock rhythms, plus grooves reminiscent of The Gipsy Kings' crowd-pleasing Catalan rumbas, is incredibly infectious. Yes, their frisky yet spot-on covers of "Stairway To Heaven" and "Orion" may goad some listeners into purchasing the album, but believe it or not, the original tunes are even more mesmerizing. "Ixapa," in which the pair are joined by noted Hungarian Roma (Gypsy) fiddler Roby Lakatos, has a wicked, pan-European swing, while the impossibly fleet "Juan Loco" should delight all comers -- once they catch their collective breaths! Produced by John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Muse), the USA release includes a DVD containing interviews, live performances and other extras. --Christina Roden
Album Description
The sleeve photo of a crocodile's eye with a faint image of Rodrigo and Gabriela superimposed, suits the artists' desire for something which didn't shout "Mexican guitarists" or "Couples." "It reminded us of Tamacun, the famous Mexican eccentric who is in Ixtapa where we lived for a while".
Tamacun -"Tamacun's message is to teach kids to respect nature." He handles crocodiles, and tourists come to photograph him.
Diablo Rojo - Inspired by a wild rollercoaster called 'Red Devil' at a theme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three rides in a row, each.
Viking Man - Another Danish inspired piece. The Viking Man was a homeless guy who encouraged Rod & Gab to tough it out on the streets, busking in minus zero conditions at Christmastime. John Leckie adds radio static.
Satori - Experiencing self doubt shortly after arriving in Ireland, Rodrigo y Gabriela were at a low ebb. No money, poor English and a deep sense of uncertainty. Only an unshakeable faith in perseverance kept them going. Satori describes the Zen - like moment of enlightenment they felt when they came through the storm.
Ixtapa - "Ixtapa is a very beautiful, very Mexican town." Roby Lakatos' wildly soaring violin solo is a perfect counterpoint to the melodic and percussive guitars.
Stairway to Heaven - "Ixtapa was our very own Stairway to Heaven!" Rod & Gab's take was initially inspired by Stanley Jordan's interpretation of the Led Zep warhorse. Growing from snippets in their live show, their unique version is at once both respectful and innovative.
Orion - This epic reworking of the Metallica song is the second time Rodrigo y Gabriela have covered Messrs Hetfield, Ulrich & Co: "A tribute to the style of music we love, it's what kept us playing the guitar through all those Spinal Tap years"
Juan Loco - The first attempt at recording this album in Mexico in Summer 2005 resulted in three weeks of sunbathing, beer drinking and power cuts. Enter Mr John Leckie, legendary producer of Radiohead, The Stone Roses and Muse, to name but a few; to midwife Rod & Gab's musical vision into what you hear today. 'Juan Loco' ('Mad John') is their Mexican nickname for Mr Leckie.
PPA - "The first P of PPA stands for Pinche, a Mexican term meaning f**king asshole. This is for all the people in the music business who think they know what's going on but actually don't have a clue".

Fantastic!.......2007-08-02
I bought the CD because I had heard Tamacun on the radio. I made the purchase with some trepidation because usually there is only one or two -- maybe three, if one is lucky -- tracks that are any good on a given CD. Well, I lucked out!!! This CD is SOLID! Not a weak track anywhere. Well...maybe a couple, (Stairway to Heaven and another one that I can't think of -- it has a violin) but that's in comparison to the rest of the CD. I can't comment on the technique or musicianship; all I can say is that I looove this CD. It's good music, through and through. So good, I get requests for it at work!
Not the highest quality recording.......2007-07-30
While the music is excellent, the recording production is not
very good. Extraneous noise and glitches are evident,
especially in track 3, where there is actually noise
and bleed-in recorded onto the track, interfering with
the song for a few seconds
(sounds like radio freqencies are being picked
up from an errant amp). Rather than editing or re-cutting
the track, this noise was left in and detracts
significantly from track 3. In my opinion, this was
sloppy production. I rate the performance of
Rodrigo & Gabriella 5 stars.
Makes your body move, makes your body happy :).......2007-07-28
Love, love, LOVE this CD. Interesting, consuming beats; happy music - even if you can't dance this music will inspire something. Great on a Sunday morning. Also recommend this group's live performance. Simply lovely.
Outstanding guitarists!.......2007-07-21
I bought the CD for one song, Tamacun, but the whole CD is fantastic. I think Diablo Roja and Orion are actually my favorite tracks. Well worth it!
Firey and Foot-stomping Spanish guitar music.......2007-07-19
If you like Spanish/flamenco guitar music, you will really like this album. Although R & G claim that this is not traditional flamenco music, it has the exact flavor of flamenco. BTW wonderful and wild solos by Rodrigo as he flies up and down the guitar fretboard.
Stairway to Heaven version is beautiful, jazzy and latin.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

one of the best CDs I own.......2007-07-25
Other reviewers have gone into a lot of depth about this CD already, so I'll keep my endorsement short and to the point. The CD is fantastic and is one of the best that I own. You will never get tired of listening to this one.
Simply addictive!.......2007-07-12
This is her best album!
Her voice is unbelievable, the delivery is amazing and the lyrics are stunning!
Haunting sounds.......2007-07-06
For 3 months, my Norah Jones CDs have taken over my car stereo. This woman is very talented!
The phenom Ms Jones.......2007-06-27
This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.
Glad i bought it ( Part II )...!.......2007-06-20
I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice, new, fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.

Canadian singer Leslie Feist has served as a guest vocalist for Norwegian folkies Kings of Convenience, Toronto power-pop troupe Broken Social Scene, and - under the frightening moniker "Bitch Lap-Lap" - the hairy female rapper Peaches. But her unruly resume hardly prepares you for the emotionally rich, softy sensual music on her major label debut. Moving from tortured torch songs such as "Lonely Lonely" to pulsating originals like "Mushaboom," it also contains stunning remakes of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" and the Bee Gees' "Inside and Out," tunes Feist not only makes her own but effectively uses to dissect her romantic desolation. "Don't you wish we could forget that kiss?" she smolders on the title track. Not in this lifetime. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
Hmmm, go back to Broken Social Scene and let this siht die, please.......2007-07-10
Fiest runs the gamut of musical styles from A to B on this record, from soul (ish) vocals to Norah Jones-like musings to out and out disco which was bad enough the first time - may the BeeGees rot in hell. I guess it's ok if you're an "indie" artist to regurgitate past musical styles that weren't too good to begin with and add a few electronic flourishes so you won't be accused of being too too retro and then add some dishpan shallow boy/girl lyrics and voila - pop genius! Fieist manages to be both sultry and sucky at the same time. Well at least all I lost was time having downloaded it, listened to it twice and deleted it. If mediocre modern pop is your thing then buy it but it's just not my bag, dad.
Another great album.......2007-07-06
I only found out about Leslie Feist in an LA Times article in early July 2007, and bought a couple discs on a lark. Good investment. This lady is gonna go far. A less mature work than The Reminder but very high-quality work.
Two stand out songs.......2007-06-18
I would rate the songs I like at 5 stars each but can't rate the cd any higher than a 3 since there are only two period. Her voice is sweet and velvety but I just don't play it that much.
Delicately Beautiful.......2007-06-12
There is one particular word for describing the sound of Feist.
Refreshing.
This '05 debut album for Feist is crisp, clear, and melodious. Right from the moment "Gatekeeper" grabs your attention you're hooked, and glad to be so. It's hard to place Feist into any one category of music. She makes me think of a possible Norah Jones wrapped in a modern shell of jazzy, loungy, and slightly Indie influences. Like nothing you've ever heard, certainly not in the last few years. Her more recent album, The Reminder, is capturing most of the attention of listeners right now and rightfully so, but this work is not to be forgotten. For a debut solo album, Let It Die seems to lack no maturity, and to think that it was recorded in a mere week amid her many international tours of '05! These songs show no hint of being mindlessly crammed onto a record ready for the shelves. In fact, it shows no haste at all. Simply the most relaxing music, but not to the point that it's short on pop, albeit in a very subtle way.
"Mushaboom" picks up the pace followed by worthy-of-flagship-status "Let It Die". All of the next three tracks are gold when you arrive at the strange tale of "When I Was a Young Girl" to which there is nothing I can compare it to except maybe Norah Jones' "Sinkin' Soon". "Secret Heart" is a fun little inquiring kind of tune with nice subtle vocals. Now we come to the place that the critics really rave about here. Feist's remake of one of my favorite Bee Gees songs "Inside and Out" is killer. The Bee Gees did such an original good job on it that its tough to say this one's better, but its close. Alot jazzier to boot. After you finish jivin' out, you arrive at unexpected "Tout Doucement". Feist's surrounding influences shine out in this jaunty little tune, so jaunty that you feel like you're strolling down a sunny avenue in Paris one morning on your way to a little cafe. Afterall, it was recorded in Paris. This charming tune will tell you that. Last we have "Now At Last", suitable but certainly not least. Of all the songs on this album it seems that this one above all others was made for Feist. Simple, delicate, and just really nice.
You simply must check out this one of a kind CD, certainly one of the best of '05. Enjoy
Time to Let it Die.......2007-05-18
I read that Feist was a sort of Norah Jones on steroids. I like Norah Jones but I'm not crazy about Norah Jones. I wanted originality. I wanted a jazz singer with a little more punch than Norah Jones. After making it through the first 8 tracks of Let It Die, I did. Feist needs steroids. Her voice is weak. There's a sexy breathless style common these days and then there's "I have no lung capacity". Feist seems the latter. Steroids could help.
Sorry, I didn't like it. The sound quality is poor which may contribute to the artist's poor performance. 2 stars because it's different and different is good. I don't think things will get better in future releases because the talent doesn't burst through. There's talent in her but not in the quantity to smash into your CD "Top Played" list.

Also known as the "rune" album or Zoso because of the medieval symbols adorning the inner sleeve, Led Zeppelin's fourth album, released in 1971, turned them from mere superstars into giant behemoths of the rock world. On tracks like "Black Dog," "Misty Mountain Hop," and "Rock and Roll," the combination of Robert Plant's banshee wails and Jimmy Page's frenetic guitar playing forever altered the stylistic bent of hard rock music. And the foreboding "When the Levee Breaks" demonstrated that Zeppelin could indeed play the blues fairly straight if they so desired. Still, everything here ultimately took a back seat to the album's (and, ultimately, the band's) magnum opus--the expertly constructed and deftly executed classic, "Stairway to Heaven." --Billy Altman
Amazon.com
Jimmy Page was a top London studio guitarist before he got rich and famous as the musical leader of Led Zeppelin. The group's fourth--and arguably their finest--album is as much a tribute to his technique as a monument to his versatility. Page produced the album, co-wrote all eight songs, and played mandolin as well as all the guitars. Musically, this 1971 disc ranges from acoustic English folke ("Goin' to California" and "The Battle of Evermore," the latter featuring the late Fairport Convention frontwoman Sandy Denny) to bone-crushing, bluesy riff-slinging. On the album's centerpiece, "Stairway to Heaven," these light and dark strains are dramatically intertwined. The chiming "Four Sticks" aside, it's the Little Richard-inspired "Rock and Roll" and the tricky time changes--a Zeppelin trademark--of the fast-and-furious "Black Dog" that elevate this album into more than just a bustle in aspiring guitarists' hedgerows. --Don Waller

Fantastic.......2007-08-03
Led Zeppelin have always been my favorite band and also the best live show I saw, and this album is flawless. Sexy, hard rocking, soulful, bluesy, mystical, otherworldly, timeless...all wrapped up into one glorious album.
LED ZEPPELIN IV : CLASSIC ROCK IN ALL IT'S GLORY !.......2007-08-01
Led Zeppelin IV, with it's rock opus Stairway To Heaven, secured the band's status as rock gods when it was released in 1971, and still remains the third best-selling album of all time. The songs are all staples on today's classic-rock radio, and they're all still very much a part of people's lives. Just yesterday, I saw somebody wearing a t-shirt with the ZOSO album cover image on the front of it. Musically, Led Zeppelin IV offers a variety of heavy-metal, blues, acoustic music, and rock n' roll. The album opens with the enthusiastic and lusty Black Dog. With Robert Plant scream-singing sensuous lyrics and Jimmy Page playing a wicked-fast guitar riff, the song is a classic. It's followed by another classic, Rock And Roll. With lyrics reminicent of 1950s era rock n' roll, and a heavier, electric, and updated version of that genre, the song definitely lives up to it's title. The Battle Of Evermore is an acoustic, mandolin dominated, medievil fantasy that has an otherworldly aura. It's followed by the legendary Stairway To Heaven, and of course, it's one of the greatest songs in the history of rock music, and it carries significant weight on this album. Beginning with only an acoustic guitar and flute, it deliberately and skillfully builds through several tempo changes and melodies untill it reaches the heights of screaming heavy-metal brilliance. The mood of the song is reflective and hopeful, and it strikes a chord in people's hearts and thoughts every time they hear it. It was was destined to become the legend that it is and will always be. Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks both include inventive guitar, interesting lyrics, and they rock with unrelenting beats. The acoustic and mellow Going To California adds variety and a change of pace. The album closes with another classic, When The Levee Breaks, a heavy-metal-meets-the-blues celebration of intense expression. John Bonham's excellant, and as always, powerful drums are highlighted on this one, and the song closes this classic album perfectly. Led Zeppelin IV is most definitely a classic rock legend. It will be an indelible part of our lives and rock music forever, and year after year after year, Stairway To Heaven will be named the The Number One Song Of All-Time on classic-rock radio stations all over the world.
The Essence of Rock and Roll.......2007-07-07
The original and definitive heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin made their mark in several other categories with their fourth album. The vocals of Robert Plant, guitar playing of Jimmy Page, and drumming of John Bonham are all the stuff of legend. John Paul Jones brings extra versatility and originality on bass, keyboard AND acoustic guitar. The songs:
Black Dog - blues-influenced (like a lot of earlier Zeppelin), loud and raunchy (in the best kind of way), some over-the-top vocal stylings
Rock And Roll - barn-burning blues and a great vehicle to show off one of the greatest rock drummers ever
The Battle Of Evermore - inventive art rock that proved that these guys were not only great rockers, but great artists as well
Stairway To Heaven - the definitive power ballad
Misty Mountain Hop - more barn-burning blues with monstrously huge guitar sounds and distinctive electric piano riff
Four Sticks - raucous art rock, using a crazy time signature and chord voicing that few bands other than Rush and Jethro Tull would dare to touch
Going To California - yes, they can do acoustic folk rock better than anyone else too
When The Levee Breaks - more rowdy blues, this time with some gritty harmonica to give it a different vibe
The production and engineering behind this album are the icing on the cake. Recording students are still studying and copying this stuff and trying to reproduce the "Bonham drum sound" to this day. The generous echoes and overdubs on Plant's vocals somehow never seem overdone or dated.
This is the amazing work of an amazing team of players and recording experts on their best days ever. Rock fans should be intimately familiar with this timeless and hugely influential CD.
brings back memories........2007-06-20
i know that a lot of people claim to have gone to the original woodstock concert, but i really did. and of all the great bands who played there, this was the best. i will never forget their great set. the lead singer and guitarist was a black man who played his guitar left-handed. the best song they played there was a great, great song about somebody named Purple Hayes, who could get into your mind. i think the title of the song was "Purple Hayes." unfortunately i have never been able to find that song on an album, but this album is great anyway. i just discovered it, and it is full of great songs. there is one song here called "Stairway to Heaven," which is about a stairway that goes up to Heaven. cool. and there is other neat stuff, too. get this record. you should. and if anyone knows what album "Purple Hayes" is on, please please please let me know.
ZOSO.......2007-06-12
This is the album that got me in to Zepp, and the first one I ever bought.
This ground breaking recording was Zepplin's #1 album, and if this would have been the only album they would released, I think they still would have had just as much of and impact on the world as they do now.
1. Black Dog- Strange name but awesome song, and one of the best riffs ever!!! 5/5
2. Rock And Roll- This song is exactilly what the name is; Rock And Roll. It's Zeppelin at their best, Jimmy Page's solo is simply amazing and fits with the song. Perfect riff, Perferct title, and a perfect solo make this song, well...perfect! 5/5
3. Battle of Evermore- It's always nice to slow it up a bit with some thing accustic, and "Battle Of Evermore" is that something accustic. This song really shows off Robert Plant's vocal range and fetures matiline. Bring it Back! 5/5
4. Stairway to Heaven- This is a song that needs no introduction, it's such a totamic peace of music, mainly because it is a constant climing song. It has some of the stragest lyrics of all time, and is known for having a backwards massage. Message or not it is still an amazing song, and Jimmy gives one of the best solos ever. 5/5
5. Misty Mountain Hop- This is the first Zeppelin song I ever heard and it still rocks. Greatest riff of all time? Maybe, but one thing that I know that everyone thinks at some point is, "What the hell is a Misty Mountain Hop?" The world may never know. 5/5
6. Four Sticks- This is a highly underratted song. It has tons of cool elements about it, Electric and accustic guitar parts, cool vocals, and great keyboard. Classic hard rock song. 5/5
7. Going To California- Another accustic song, nice and mellow. 4/5
8. When the Leeve Breaks- Best drum beat ever, provided by the one and only Bonzo. Heavy riff with some harmonica, great way to finish off a great album. 4.5/5
Led Zeppelin made their mark on the world with this one, legend- Chuck

It's a great and perhaps impossible challenge to encapsulate the highlights of Johnny Cash's vast musical catalog in a two-CD, 36-song collection like this. Yet, though it barely scratches the surface, 2002's The Essential Johnny Cash--part of a series of compilations and reissues celebrating Cash's 70th birthday--does present three-dozen satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels. Above all else, these 36 selections are wonderful reminders of Cash's rustic eclecticism. Cuts range from '50s Sun rockabilly classics like "Hey Porter" and "I Walk the Line" to '60s country-folk gems like "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and Cash's memorable duet with Bob Dylan on Dylan's "Girl from the North Country." Also included are more recent samplings of Cash's celebrated collaborations, including "Highwayman," which he recorded in 1984 with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson as part of the on-again, off-again supergroup the Highwaymen, and "The Wanderer," a fervent gospel collaboration with U2 that appeared on the band's 1993 album, Zooropa. --Bob Allen

Sorry I bought.......2007-08-02
I know some people will hate me for this, but I really did not like this music. Oh, a couple of the songs were really great, but I do not like to own albums where I only want to hear a couple of songs.... so I gave it away to a friend... who then gave it away to a friend. Wish I had more to say, but that's it.
untimately boring.......2007-08-01
The volume was bought to accompany us on a month long road trip. The CD's got one play and were put away for the rest of the journey. The arrangements and instrumentation was repetitive and the voice shows little ability to work outside of a single approach to lyrics. I would have been better served to download the few well know items and forget the rest. Perhaps it will appeal to die hard JC fans but it is like a character actor who can only play one role.
Great collection.......2007-07-13
The Essential Johnny Cash, while far from being the only Cash CD you'll ever need, is nonetheless a great collection of his biggest hits. Drawing mainly from his early years, this set features nearly all of my personal favorites, and even a few lesser-known hits that usually get lost in the cracks of other albums.
Like I said--this isn't the only Johnny Cash CD you'll ever need, but this, along with the Folsom and San Quentin concerts, is a good way to start your collection. Highly recommended.
All of the favorites!.......2007-05-17
This is a great 2-CD set if you are a Johnny Cash fan and want as many hits as you can get without buying the box set! I got the Essential Johnny Cash for my Dad at Christmas last year and listened to it on a trip with him. I loved the movie Walk the Line and this CD made me go out and buy the box set for myself. I admit I like this CD better thna the box set as I find myself switching CD's too much with the box set. There are 4 CD's with the box set where this one has two. the boxed set also has a lot of gospel song by Johnny Cash, which I didn't like as much. But the Essential Johnny Cash did have a couple of the gospel songs that I did like. So if you are a Johnny Cash fan, or think you are becoming one, I highly recommend The Essential Johnny Cash 2-CD set. It has all the songs you'll need and love! Like me, you may even discover some you never knew you'd love.
Perfect Intro to Johnny Cash!.......2007-05-14
What can you say? It's Johnny Cash and he's great. What I like most about this CD is that it introduced me to songs of his that I had never heard of such as 'Hey Porter'. You can hear Cash's personality and humor in his music. Buy it, you'll like it.

The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life".......2007-07-16
What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life", it delivers more of same from start to finish. However, clearly one-upped by nearly every track on "The Open Door".
Indispensable.......2007-07-09
This is one of the very best CDs ever made, and one of the ONLY ones I've ever found that I can listen to from beginning to end and never skip past a single song. I think there's maybe four or five others in the world that I can say that about, and I listen to almost all types of music, from Mozart to Enya to Tool to Billie Holiday to Simon and Garfunkel to Staind to... anyway, it's a masterpiece. Some music snobs like to turn up their noses at Evanescence and mock those who listen to them because they're generally thought of as "Teenage Goth", but I have a message for them: GET OVER YOURSELVES!! BY BEING NARROW MINDED YOU ARE ONLY DEPRIVING YOURSELVES OF SOME OF THE BEST, MOST HAUNTING MUSIC YOU COULD ASK FOR!! I listen to this CD ALOT and I never get tired of it. Amy Lee is amazing! TRY IT!!!
Light in the Darkness.......2007-07-03
Fans of bands like Nightwish, The Gathering, Lennon Murphy and Lacuna Coil are either rejoicing or cursing Evanescence. Their brand of atmospheric gothic rock / metal is quite comparable to all bands mentioned above yet they are the ones in the Billboard Top 10 Album chart.
"Bring Me To Life" is a stunning track on its own merit that could stand to lose the male pseudo rap-rock vocal yelling "Wake Me Up". (If you hear the demo version without the male vocal you will understand) I find it amusing that fans of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are buying this disc just on the basis of this track alone only to realize that the rest of the disc is moody, dark journey into the belly of various beasts. Nevertheless, Amy Lee has a haunting voice that layers beautifully over gothic rock/metal passages much like Tarja, Anneke, Christina, and Tori Amos. "Haunted" is a short, but remarkable track that allows Amy's vocals to breathe chilling words of despair. Just read the cold words to "Imaginary" and you wonder what exact demon tortures the writer's (Ben Moody) soul.
Overall, this disc is way too deep and thought provoking for its target audience. For those of us that have supported this style of music for years, please don't pass judgment against this disc until you have experienced the overall enchantment within its 11 tracks.
Amy Lee: The most underrated voice in music today.......2007-06-27
I remember when "Bring me to life" started playing regularly on a local rock station a few years ago. I thought it was a pretty cool song and liked the vocals of female singer Amy Lee, who seemed to have a wide range and yet still able to have somewhat of an overall mystique to her sound that I still have a hard time describing to this day. At that point a friend of mine loaned me the CD, but upon the first couple of listens I put it back without a second thought.
After selling 14 million copies worldwide and having a strong sophomore release with "The Open Door", I decided to give Evanescence another chance, returning to the debut album "Fallen". Sometimes it takes giving an album a second chance to make a first impression, and this time around I guess I was ready to embrace a band that was deemed as Goth Metal by the masses, but had a female vocalist that was able to help them rise above the all too familiar growl and dirge vocal efforts that usually fall into this category. Strong singles that stand out to me start out with Track 1 in "Going Under", which has a nice, simple guitar piece that has enough grind to stay down in the darker, more brooding sounds of this style of music. Track 6 is a tune called "Tourniquet" and has some eerie tones that help it start out before breaking into a clean, balanced attack of guitars and percussion. The overall structure of this album is great, and although I said there are several singles I like, I will just sum it up by saying there is something great about every song on this album.
What really is a selling point for me, however, is the lead singer Amy Lee. Amy's voice is poetic in deliverance of the songs and has a great overall emotional connection with the music, while at the same time her range allows her to add a lot of diversity to each and every song throughout the album. Overall you have a powerful set of music that rocks when it has to, and has some piano melody to add to the mix (Track 6 and 9 in particular) that I feel sets it apart from a lot of the genre's and classifications that people have been trying to put it in. If you are not much into newer "Nu-Metal" or what have you, but enjoy some of the progressive metal sounds and intricate approaches of such musicians, you just might find Evanescence to your liking. As stated before, it took me a few years to "come back" and discover them, but the wait was worth it and I look forward to any new releases this band has to offer.

Jack Johnson has found himself a groove. Indeed, the Hawaiian surfing champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his sophomore release. Fans of Brushfire Fairytales should be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These," the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy." On the splendid "Taylor," Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan. And "By The Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful. -- Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:
Well he is not Neil Young, let alone the second coming.......2007-08-01
This guy is way overhyped, songwriting is whiny and lacks any facts or knowledge. Guitar playing is really childish skittishes that do not really portray any talent past knowing 3 chords. Tries to act like he is some voice that represents youth but fails miserably. I added this CD to my list of things I wipe with. If you really want to hear an acoustical session that proves this guy sux, there are some others out there. Marketing is the key in todays music world instead of talent and that is why this guy sells records. The lyrics suk, he is just crying and whining from visuals he gets from NPR or something, and that alone is enough to put someone to sleep. Boring, bad and will not be heard of in twenty years. I wish the next Hendrix or Neil Young would please stand up because the posers in here right now annoy me.
On and On.......2007-06-13
Considering I first heard this DVD sitting in my dentist's chair having a tooth extracted, you wouldn't believe it's effect. It certainly helped take my mind off the immediate situation. Beautiful music, soothing mellow voice and a delight to hear at any time.
GREAT STUFF!.......2007-06-08
A great, laid-back, very mellow CD that can put you right on the beach, with a drink in your hand, watching the waves roll in.... even if you are sitting in your office in front of your computer. A must have if you love acoustic guitars! I HIGHLY recommend it!
Amazing Album.......2007-05-30
I love Jack Johnson! I have a more recent album and thought nothing could top it, but this one does. The lyrics are thoughtful, the melodies are catchy. I drove up and down the coast listening to this CD and never got sick of it.
Jack--always a classic.......2007-05-15
This record is one of his best... I would recommend it for new listeners of Jack Johnson who are just beginning to explore his musical awesomeness.

The Killers match postpunk guitars with a synthesizer overlay that recalls '80s New Wave without burying their sound in nostalgia. On their debut, Hot Fuss, frontman Brandon Flowers plumbs his imagination for tales of murdered lovers ("Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," "Midnight Show"), voyeurism ("Mr. Brightside"), and sexual confusion (the single "Somebody Told Me"), Flowers and his mates are obviously canny students; the total effect is of a playacted obsession, but one made irresistible by their skillful, catchy songs. If there's an occasional misstep (the painfully earnest line "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" from "All These Things That I've Done"), it seems of a piece with the Killers' influences. As it is, Hot Fuss is one of several recent releases that bring a diverting faux glamour to the mainstream rock scene. --Rickey Wright
Album Description
Hot Fuss features eleven nuggets of reel-you-in storytelling genius and musical nectar. These eleven tracks span from the "very Vegas - like Ziggy came to town" first proper single release "Somebody Told Me";"Mr Brightside" - a tale of jealousy that depicts that moment in a relationship when you realize that your other half might be playing away and this thought takes up residence in your psyche feeding the worst fears and visualisations your imagination can then throw at you. You'll find two-thirds of a murder trilogy in "Midnight Show", which starts off harking back to "Lipgloss" before veering into far darker territory than old Jarvis would ever have flirted with, in Pulp days at least, and "Jenny". These two are connected by the story of a murder of a girl by her jealous boyfriend. The first part of the trilogy, "Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf", will, you can be sure, make an appearance at some point in the future. It's a deliciously ambitious series that! belies the band's tender years. Elsewhere, meanwhile: "On Top" celebrates where Brandon feels the band is at, while stalker's tale "Andy You're A Star" and "All These Things That I've Done," saw Flowers realise his dream of using a gospel choir in their recordings.

Love it! Play it repeatedly.......2007-07-20
Yes, I do play it an awful lot and I'm not afraid to say so. This has so many great tracks on it; I really can't think of one I don't like, though I do have my favorites. Pop it in and it will help you get your work done in the home or yard. I really need to order their next album as well, Keep it up, Brandon and boys.
A Lovely Journey.......2007-06-02
I have to admit, when I first heard "Mr. Brightside" back in 2004 I wrote these guys off as new wave copycats devoid of their own creative force. Boy was I EVER wrong!!! Fast forward 3 years later. After hearing "Read My Mind" from their "Sam's Town" album and instantly falling in love with it, I went back, gave this album a fair listen from top to bottom and I was blown away. Sure, the influence of 80's new wave with it's blasting bass lines and sonic-filled synthesizers are there, but they've pulled off in such a way that makes this offering fresh without giving the listener a nostalgia hangover. The playing by the band is tight, groovy, and as catchy as an STD in Africa (okay, bad analogy but you get my drift). Brandon Flowers' voice is awesome in the weirdest way. It's pitchy, squeamish and loud at times, but somehow you fall in love with it. Overall, I believe that this album should be considered a modern day classic. Rock on Killers!
Loveeee me some killlers.......2007-05-31
I will admit that i do like Sams Town better. But none the less this album is still absolutey fabolous. The Killers and Coldplay are the only 2 bands albums where i can listen to there albums without skipping songs. This band is just so fantasic in so many differnt ways and for all you people who think that they are just another average band i seriously think that is so false.Other than Franz Ferindad i really dont know any other band like The Killers. And even Franz doesn't really stand up to The Killers. Also these guys are mind blowing live.I've recentyl attended there concert in Atlanta and it was the best show i've been to.I will be a killers fan for a long long time and there cd's will never leave my car cd player lol

I'm always a little skepticle to purchase any items online but the product was as mentioned and the turn-around was quick.
Thanks.

With their dueling guitar leads and harmonies built on a double drummer foundation, the Allman Brothers Band cast the mold for the southern rock sound that would proliferate in the '70s. Virtuoso musicians, their songs drew upon a number of southern influences, including country, the blues, New Orleans jazz, and even gospel, creating a sound that was distinctly theirs. Decade of Hits is a great catalog of the Allman's at their guitar wielding best. The sweet, infectious harmonies on the instrumental "Jessica" have become a classic reference point in themselves. Next to the tragedies that plagued them--two motorcycle deaths, heroin addiction--the Allman's are probably best known for the heroic "Ramblin' Man." Written and sung by the now legendary Dickey Betts, the song contained everything that made the band great: intricate guitar harmonies, a strong melody, and just enough twang to keep the thing tight. Decade also contains Allman staples "Melissa," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and "Southbound." --Steve Gdula

This is older music that still rocks into 2007. I bought this for my husband as a birthday present and got a very pleased husband for my trouble. Check out Gov't Mule if you like Allman Brothers.
LOVE IT.......2007-04-26
I love this CD. I wish there were more hits on it, but hey. I like The Allman Brothers Band loads better than Greg Allman on his own. It took me awhile to finally find the song/s I like, done the way I remember them. Glad I finally found this one.

GREAT SOUTHERN ROCK COLLECTION.......2007-03-13
The Allman Brothers' A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 is arguably the best greatest hits compilation ever assembled and released within the Southern Rock genre.
Indeed, it is a most enjoyable listen. It has the early hits with the fine-tuned organ and the top-notch guitar work of the great Allman Brothers. The very early tracks from the 1969-1970 period, Whipping Post and all, are quite appealing and are reminiscent of those darker tunes in the style of Sugarloaf's Greeneyed Lady and Santana's Soul Sacrifice.
The commercially successful records that put the Allman Brothers at the top of the charts but were, sadly, recorded and released well after the death of Duane Allman are all there, from the number 2 hit, Ramblin' Man, to the immortal instrumental that has received international accolades, namely Jessica.
For those who want a perfect Allman Brothers sampler without delving into the boxed sets or anything that is outside that frequently played on the classic rock radio stations, this is it. You have the signature live and studio pieces that have preserved the Allman Brothers' legacy. 'Nuff said.

Fans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

Knocked my Socks off....& blew 'em Away!.......2007-03-28
For me, that's plenty nuff said, right there!
I don't get blindsided like I did when I caught his act somewhere in the music and was left to wonder "What and Who was THAT?..WoW" Same thing happened during the last membership drive for OPB...caught a snippet...then my dtr in law sent me his album. I thought, Who the heck's Jack Johnson? Now I know. It put the name to the music that haunted me and oh boy is he something else. Fabulous. I think I could probably be happy as a big ol fat mud hen, just to take this CD and maybe a Macy Gray and some Shawn Mullins...and go to that proverbial deserted island, a happy camper. Food?...Well at least my soul would be well fed. I've had a Dave Koz CD in the car's player for 2 yrs. It will finally get to come in the house for a well-deserved rest, while this one goes traveling for a while! The back-up for his vocals are totally outstanding. Nobody can say that I "don't know Jack", anymore; that's for sure! Looking for a new and totally addictive, musical high?....Here 'tis! A beautiful baker's dozen.
Brushfire Fairytales.......2007-03-08
Jack Johnson is smooth and the tunes are catchy and stay in your head.
Rythmic souds.......2007-01-25
More laid back that his "in between dreams" album. Great soothing voice. song lyrics vary from topic to topic. Awesome driving music. The song "Bubble Toes" make me want to dance everytime I listen to it!
Jack Johnson is awesome.......2007-01-15
I started listening to Jack Johnson when his Between Dreams CD came out. Who knew this gem was just waiting to be discovered?
Adore him.......2007-01-11
