A JEWEL.......2007-07-30

1992.... Fear Of The Dark. An album that marked the end of an era for all of the Maiden fans, for Bruce Dickinson would leave the band for a few dark years. When looking for reviews on this one, people may read a lot of different things. Facing the facts, this is one of those albums that, once you've listened to it right, you will never leave. And when I say "listen to it right" I am talking about those unknown songs that weren't part of the tour, for the other ones will probably get you instantly. Different from the old stuff, but with really heavy cuts, unforgettable riffs, a couple of fillers (like the most good albums), amazing solos.... and sitting in the end of the album, on track 12, reigns one of the best songs of Maiden ever, which gives the name of the album, the glorius Fear Of The Dark.
I can talk for an hour of the greatness of this album, but that would be my opinion, and we all have different taste. For me, this is one of the 10 albums that I would take to a desert island or to another planet. But if you're reading this because you dont have enough information about this album, here are some facts... This album was rated as "a really great album" by metal magazines like "Metal Hammer" and "Kerrang"; I remember the reviews on the spanish version of Metal Hammer on 1992, that said "for a lot of us writers, this is one of the best Maiden albums"; Those are reviews far more useful than mine and the other guys that write here. Even "Wasting Love", the soft song of this album is awesome!!! Tracks like "Be Quick Or Be Dead", "Afraid To Shoot Strangers", "Childhood's End" and "Judas Be My Guide" are this kind of stuff that will never let you go. The usual "fist in the face" Maiden style, with melodic riffs, mind-blowing drum work, outstanding solos and that kind of "substance" that great classics are made of. Other songs like "Weekend Warrior", "Fear Is The Key", "Chains of Misery" and "The Fugitive" have another style....the songs that dont catch you in the moment, but will later for sure... sooner or later.
And for the end, the crown upon Maiden head.... Fear of the Dark. Maiden oftenly deals with perfection, but this is beyond sight.... from the raw begining, passing through the mesmerizing soft introduction, and the blast that follows, the unforgettable riff, the outstanding solo section, the flawless chorus and the amazing conclusion, there's just one word to describe this song... PERFECT. And again, that's not only my opinion. Since this album came 15 years ago, the band has NEVER put this song out of the selection for live performances. In the past tour promoting their latest album, "A Matter Of Life And Death", they played the entire new stuff and only 5 all time classics, among them of course Fear Of The Dark. I think that says it all.

solid maiden album!!!!.......2007-07-15

this is a solid maiden album from "be quick or be dead" to "fear of the dark" its full maiden.some people reviewing this one must not have followed maiden to long as they dont seem to get that they slightly change their direction every album still having that maiden sound.you can play any track on this one and it is good at the least,darn awesome for the rest.some peoples ice cream is always to cold!saw them on tour for this one and it was great front row no less.bought it the day it was released on tape and have since bought the dvd,and the "raising hell" tape that was bruces last concert at the time with them.the guy that saya he can play better than janick must have had a bad hangover the next day,get real bud,if you like maiden you will like this one.

Here to Eternity? Weekend Warrior? Give me a break! Pretty Weak.... I hate the stupid bar band stuff. Maiden wrote smarter songs before.Anything From the 80's would suit better if you are new to Maiden.... There was no growth here at all. There are a couple goodies here too. BE quick is OK, Fear of is OK, Just not enough to make it worthwhile. Try Brave New World. Adrian is back and it has many better songs

Not terrible, but not great either.......2007-04-10

This album is a big improvement over "No Prayer for the Dying", which was one of the worst albums Iron Maiden ever released. Sure, there are still some dogs on "Fear of the Dark", but there are some highlights too, notably the title track and "Judas Be My Guide", both of which are strong songs. The lyrics are still a weak point on this album - not that Maiden has ever really been about the lyrics, but these are generally pretty sub-standard and silly. This doesn't compare to the classic period (Number of the Beast - Seventh Son) but it's still a decent album.

Good but not great.......2007-04-06

I somewhat have a softspot for this album, just cause it was my first (yeah yeah i started being a maiden fan way late in the game) and i actually found out about them on accident. needless to say when i first heard the album I liked it a lot, so there you have it i bought all the other maiden albums. with that being said, after hearing all the other albums and years later of listening to maiden and following their stuff i have to say that this is probably my least favorite album. Not that its bad, its still better than 90 percent of whats out there today, but compaired to their earlier works, this one just dont hold up. fear of the dark, is an outstanding song, as the albums epic, catches my attention and rocks hard. be quick or be dead is another solid rocker. other than that though i feel that the album is pretty much filler. no garbage in this album, just nothing that really grabs me.
some people will say that this is an improvement over no prayer for the dying. I might agree just cause of the prescense of the title track Fotd but other than that its pretty much equals.

Quite a different sound.......2007-07-07

I'll admit, I admire the folk music, but I can't say that I'm the biggest fan. I listen to more of the general rock music, ranging from the classics to the more aggressive modern metal/screamo combinations. But THIS, this is practically a class in itself. The mixing of folk and metal sounded very bizarre when I heard of the concept, but when I actually heard the music, I quickly became a fan.

Just the imagination and originality of it is phenonmenal. Not only that, there has to be a lot of talent required, considering that the artists need to be skilled not only with the folk instruments, but also with the modern ones as well.

Finally.........2006-11-21

Spirit, the debut full lenght from Eluveitie, can be hard to describe. The album, in my opinion, suffers few, if any, flaws. The flutes, the whistles, the pipes, the accordions, the hurdygurdies, the whatever-other-obscure-folk-instruments are all perfect. Good folk metal is something hard to truely achieve (most of the good ones are mainly viking/scandiavian metal bands, i.e. Odinir, Korpiklaani, Finntroll even). But enough for Scandinavian Folk...we needed some good celtic metal. I'm sorry, but Cruachan and Skyclad (and many others) have all failed to make an amazing celtic folk metal album, one of the standards of Spirit. This album manages to be original and complex in a genre of music (I mean metal here, not just folk metal) that leaves little room for something different. A mind blowing work and a must have. Spirit is one of the best metal albums, ever.

Spirit is an intense musical alliance of the old and new. Eluveitie started as a project to reconstruct a helvetian(continental) celtic dialect. Resurrecting the sounds of rituals and celebration to bind up in union with the violent intensity of metal, Eluveitie has emerged as the champion of the field!

With enough instruments to make the Chieftains envy, this album is the standard for originality. The instruments are well balanced, the guitars don't claim any superiority but leave enough room for your ears to capture the sounds of flutes, pipes, horn, whistles, fiddles, mandola, hurdygurdy, gaita, and accordian.

Six of the eleven songs are sung in english.

Mindblowing pagan metal..........2006-06-22

This is quite some mindblowing stuff concidering that 'Spirit' is actually Eluveitie's debut album... The quality of their EP of 2004 was OK, the songs were good, and now with 'Spirit' they are perfected... Violins, accordions, fluits, whistles, bagpipes (or whatever) give their very recognizable and distinct sound to the rough metal Eluveitie makes... Eluveitie means 'I am an Helvetian', a continental Celt... Some songs are sung in Celtic, others in English... All are about Celtic culture and wars...
I love Chrigels voice! His clean vocals and his screams are both awesome...
You've got to hear this band playing live! It's a party every time I see them...

This is one great band and this is definately one of the best releases I know of...

Great CD!!.......2003-08-07

This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.

Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20

Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

The guitars are brought forward much more on this disc and the keyboards, while still a vital part, are pushed back in the mix allowing for a much more extreme sound. My favorite tunes on this CD are "A Dragon's Children", "And Thus It Burns" and "Of Slumber and Death". But really, there is not a downer on the whole album. If all this wasn't enough, the production, packaging and artwork are top notch. christian black metal? is that possible?.......2007-07-26

i've been too busy flipping out on posers (ehem, cough, As I Lay Dying haters, cough) to actually review anything lately, so i figure i should start again with this awesome album. this makes 3 inches of blood look like slipknot. the vocals are so high pitched it's unreal and the guitar just kills. if you like black metal or are a fan of 3 inches of blood or megadeth's vocals, definantly get this album. no one has ever heard of this band for only one reason. they're christian. so if you like christian metal this would be a good album to buy to expand your taste from the hardcore and metalcore most christian metal bands play into black metal. ROCKS!

My favorite album by my favorite band.......2005-12-18

Simply put I love this album. This band is heavy, powerful and extreme black metal. Unfortunately they don't get the respect they deserve in the black metal community for one reason...they are Christians. Speaking as a fan of Emperor and Dissection this is head and shoulders above them all. When I got out of the black metal scene and wanted to find Christian alternatives, Slechtvalk was one of the first I found. I realized I had found a band that was the equal (and superior) of Emperor. This is a must-have for any black metal collection.

Extreme Excellent Black Metal.......2005-10-26

It's sad that because the lyrics are positive this band may not get much notice. When it comes to black metal this band is awesome. Not really breaking new ground but excelling in the genre none the less. I don't always agree with the "professional" reviews Amazon has, but this reviewer nailed it. If you like extreme metal at all this band deserves a listen.

Great music from a great musician.......2003-01-22

My first introduction to Giltrap was Live At The BBC. I think it was actually a bootleg because it isn't listed here or as one of his releases on his official website. Anyway, it contained great intrumental music and I really wanted to hear more of him so I quickly ordered this album along with Visionary. In my opinion this is definately the better of the two (if you want to know why then find my review of Visionary - I posted it recently along with this one).

There are actually only two songs here that were on Live At The BBC, one of which is a bonus track and the other of which is the title track. Of the 8 originals, all are great. My favourites would be the folky Roots, the energetic Nightrider and the epic title track (only the first half is played on the Live At The BBC version - this version is definately better). The musicianship is fantastic - Giltrap's guitar work is certainly some of the finest I have ever heard. He is not really a lead guitarist in the Frank Zappa type sense, but instead draws far more influence from a classical style (like John Williams) which is more of a complex and melodic rhythm style. He has created his own brand of classical playing which he then incorporates into folk and rock arrangements. Not that he doesn't play fine lead when he wants, but that isn't so much his brand of playing.

As for the extras, well Catwalk Blues is the track which is also on Live At The BBC, and it is better on that album. The recording quality is better and the playing is far smoother. Smiler isn't a bad song but if its an out-take it isn't that hard to see why. The alternative version of Fear Of The Dark is interesting but while it would be very hard to not make this song sound good it is certainly nowhere near the original (or the Live At The BBC version). Oh Well isn't bad but its not my thing. I think its a Fleetwood Mac cover. These bonus tracks aren't bad music but they kinda detract from the original set of songs.

The album itself would probably get a full five but as a package (I hate refering to an album with that word) this only gets four due to the bonus tracks. But I digress - if you want some passionate, technical and exiting intrumental music that merges folk, rock and classical styles together then buy this album.

Fear Not!.......2000-03-28

Gordon Giltrap's "Fear Of The Dark" is exactly what you'd expect from a self-taught guitar virtuoso with medieval/folkie inclinations who falls in with people who do music for TV, in 1978. I've loved this record since I first heard it 19 years ago, and I'm delighted to have a copy, not just a cassette dub. It was worth the wait.

Giltrap's guitar playing, mostly accoustic, some electric, is stunning. The production gloss is so high you can just about see your reflection, and the drums/bass/keyboards/string section is tight, well rehearsed and to the point. There's real musical value in the composition and arangement, not just boogie-ing on.

The title track, in particular, simply defies categorization. It starts with an apeggio worthy of Strunz and Farah or the Gipsy Kings- the tune is carried on the modulation of the modulation of the notes. He's THAT fast. The wall-of-progressive-sound drums/ bass/keyboards comes in behind that and sketches a counterpoint in two parts. Did I mention the glockenspiel? A keyboard picks up the original arpeggio and suddenly an electric guitar takes off on another related melody, over a disco beat! By the three minute mark we're into a third movement, which sounds like an ending, but picks up and moves to a duet for acoustic guitar carrying melody over an an acoustic piano arpeggio. Strings, electric guitar, all kinds of percussion are layed on, another ending, this one with a non-vocal chorus. A long, long, ending, full of detail and nuance. A whole 'nother tune, really, a fourth movement.

What is this like? Like nothing you've ever heard before. Like Latimer and Bardens from Camel decided to write THEIR version of "Quadrophenia" and hired John Williams, the guitarist, not the Boston Pops conductor, to play it. Like movie music for a big-budget production of "Nine Princes In Amber", directed by Kurosawa. The juxtipositions are fearless, and inspired.

The rest of the tracks are similarly wild mixes, based on incredible guitar playing, tight, focused back-up and fair-to-middling composition. Melody, rhythm and counterpoint move between the acoustic guitars, the keyboards, electric guitars, string sections. Sometimes the drummer counts time, tock-tock-tock. Everything is VERY crisp.

I find the one vocal track of the original, "Weary Eyes" to sound like an ad for something, with an unaccountable guitar solo and progressive touches- I wonder if this WAS an ad, or began as one. But "Fast Approaching", the next track, mixes so many up-beat elements with such overwhelming craft that its impossible to not say 'oh, go ahead!' and just let it play. Plenty of people get bell-like tones from the harmonics of accoustic guitars- only Giltrap mixes it with *real* bells, and roto-toms, and a raging electric guitar solo, and an ah-ah-ah male chorus.

Four bonus tracks are included, and details of the arangements differ from the US cut-out disc which I first heard in 1981. The differences make this stronger- perhaps this is how they wanted it to sound in the first place.

The first bonus, a live Cakewalk Blues, is pretty and illustrates Giltrap's solo accoustic playing which is mostly what his later career has been about. Amazing technique.

The second bonus track must be an outtake from the same sessions and deserved to be left out first time around. So did the 'single version' of "Fear Of The Dark", the third bonus track. Like the alternate take of "Brazil" on Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Stone Flower", these two less inspired tracks make the stuff that works all the more impressive- its clear that a good record isn't just a matter of recording some musicans. The muse is not indiscriminate.

The last bonus track could have been a great idea, "Oh Well", the old Fleetwood Mac gem, but the reading is all wrong, with a horn section that's tight but a chart that's wrong, and a guitar arangement which wastes Giltrap's talent and the joy of the original tune. A real disappointment.

Never mind the last three tracks then. The first 9 are WELL worth the purchase price. No filler, no wasted time. A true original that has only improved in the 22 years since it was recorded.

Great Introduction To NWW.......2007-05-18

For those new to Nurse With Wound "Livin' Fear Of James Last or... Joy in the House of Dada!!!" is a great way to get to know the NWW sound.
This compilation gives you a nice over view of their work from 79' to 05'. What I feel is best about this compilation is not only do you get 19 great NWW tracks most of them are over 7 minutes long. Although that isn't uncommon with NWW.

The comp also has a nice variety of tracks.
Such tracks as "Die, Flip or go to India" and "Home is where the heart is/Monument for Perez Prado" are some nice chill-out ambient. "Optical Illusion Pad" and "Intravenous(edit)" have a psychedelic edge and of course there are some great noise tracks like "Cold(edit)" and "The six buttons of sex appeal" and there is even "Subterranean Zappa Blues" which stands out as the most structured track on the comp that seems to scream "Industrial".
Last of all there is the track "I was no longer his dominant(remix)" which I believe is the only unique track on the album. It's a ambient like track with spoken word throughout and last over 11 minutes.

The price is right for the album but I believe new fans will benefit from it more than collectors unless you absolutely gotta have everything NWW.

Sympathy's Arcane path is a successful combination of brutality, technical prowess,melody, sharp, crisp production. Definitely a step up from the debut album Invocation. Great songwriting for a death metal band, really good lyrics(my favorite one is Lord of Terrors). Just killer, no filler!!!!
