A splendid ecliptica without doubt.......2006-10-12
Well, there is nothing more to say (other reviews have described this album and its music quite accurately) - this band is totally incredible, the blend of beauty and iciness is enchanting. If you are new to this type of band, do not worry, I will share brief information about their sound and music experience.
First of all, they are a Power-Metal band with no equal whatsoever; they are from Finland, this makes their sound quite magical and attractive; do not be fooled, although the sound is fantasy-bent, the lyrics are themes of reality (90% of them: war, sadness, the missing of someone or something, sin outcomes, lunacy, cause and effect, among others in a unique and odd manner); the singer provides a strange yet captivating voice, he is truly feeling what has been written (the accent makes it the most interesting); the rest of the band just provides you with a series of scenarios that are genuinely convincing; with this said, prepare yourself for a regal and mythical journey.
This album contains 10 unparallel tracks:
1) Blank File - a fast paced opener with an ecstatic feeling to it (it talks about technology and how it can affect a person's life if used in an addictive way). I give this one an A.
2) My Land - a mid paced song that may perhaps trigger your reflective senses (perhaps it talks about how time can change a place you grew in and cherished, how time and ambitions can fortify or corrupt that special place). It is a decent song with a slight patriotic sound to it. I give it a B.
3) 8th Commandment - just as the first track, a more mystifying fast paced one. Only in this case there is a sense of anger as it describes the consequences of lying. I give this solid piece an A.
4) Replica - another mid paced song, but with drama. Here you have the traumatic effects of war; somehow you can feel those effects with the song's sound of heroism, burden, and indirect regret. I give this special song a B+.
5) Kingdom for a Heart - this is one of my favorite songs right here. It is emotional, but it keeps its edge. Here you have the yearning of love, but it is impossible to achieve. It is a masterpiece even though the writer himself did not like it that much. I give it an A.
6) Fullmoon - here you have a song that is 50% real and 50% myth. It talks about a troubled romance due to a man's curse (he becomes a werewolf), of course, that is my opinion. I give this mid paced sound of tragedy an A (the chorus are very catchy, that is an element that greatly distinguishes this band).
7) Letter to Dana - I really love this power ballad, it is that zealous and melancholic alike. It talks about the missing of a person; there are other sub-themes in there too. Some say this song is all that greasy, but the invocation of depression in a sweet way is there. I give this cookie an A (listen to Shy if you have the chance - the sequel is as better, if listened together it will not disappoint).
8) Unopened - the infamous what if theme, another favorite right here. This song returns back to fast pace, almost Victorian sounding; it is that fun to listen. I give this overacted sounding (it has its reasons to sound such way) an A.
9) Picturing the Past - another favorite of mine, this is fast paced also. It talks about a past regarding prostitution I think. The sound is intense and torment-bent, it will not let you down. I give this striking opus an A.
10) Destruction Preventer - this song is absolutely awesome; it is a bit long, but the ferocity and cold ambience mixture is rewarding to the listener. Its talks about the fall of nature (mankind as well) due to military advanced weaponry - it is as the rest of the songs, earcandy. I give this closer a B+.
In the end, I give this entire album a 3.7 which is a deserving A (highly recommended). This album was Sonata Arctica's first album and I have to admit, the put sacrifice into it for in my view it remains their best album so far. Please, if you are deeply centered within Death-Metal and Nu-Metal (which some bands sound great), and Metal music related with the first two mentioned, I suggest not to gain this album. Again, if you want new experiences and are familiar with Power-Metal, Fantasy sounds, etc. - then I strongly suggest to feel free and gain this wonderful album, it will remain with you for a long, long time. Thanks for having time to read this review and analyzing it.
Suggested albums: Reckoning Night, Silence, and Winterheart's Guild (Sonata Artica as well, in order that I admired most - A [almost tied to the first album], A, and B. Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius' Visions, Kamelot, among others are good too.
Welcome To The World Of Sonata Arctica!.......2006-09-08
This band brings depth, quality, and skill to the table for our enjoyment. They can go fast, like Dragonforce, but they also know how to make a ballad. I prefer their harder stuff though, but don't have to skip tracks because it is all very good. Sometimes you can hear Tony Kakko's Finnish accent, but it does not detract from the music in my opinion. I have Reckoning Night and Winterheart's Guild (in addition to Ecliptica) and they are also worth getting. If you like Sonata Arctica's style, make sure you pick up all 3 titles that I mentioned. They are very satisfying.
Wow, this is great!!!.......2006-04-08
One of the best albums in the power metal category!!! This is Sonata Arctica, with incredible musicianship, and great voice very melodic. The arrengements are at the top!!!!
A strong debut.......2005-10-02
Ah, good ol' Sonata Arctica. My current favorite Finnish metal group took four years to release their debut album here, but when it first came, I'm sure fans of Silence and Winterheart's alike were flocking into the stores just to see what they sounded like in their developmental stages. Well, early on, they sounded a LOT like Stratovarius, only with a MUCH better vocalist. They have a lot of speedy songs on here, but the are easy to tell apart, including their first single, "UnOpened," the brutal opener, "Blank File," and the awesome third track, "8th Commandment." However, they do have a typical Sonata ballad ("Letter to Dana"), as well as "My Land" and "Replica," both of which begin like a ballad and grow increasingly heavy, only to mellow out by the end. Closer "Destruction Preventer" instantly made me think of the classic Stratovarius tune "Black Diamond," as did the harpsichord intro from "UnOpened." However, even though endless comparisons could be made to the BIGGEST power metal group from Finland, it didn't mean that they weren't their own band. And that's good, and also what helped this debut kick ass.
Incredible........2005-09-13
"Ecliptica" was Finnish power metal band,Sonata Arctica's, debut album, and to this day, after three more remarkable albums, I feel this is still their best. It was also the realisation that power metal dosnt have to deal with dragons and wizards, and can still rock, and still have a sort of mystical edge. Tony Kakko's vocals are excellent, Janni's guitar work, and I think he's pretty young, is astounding. The keys, which i also think were Kakko's part on this album, are also great, which are really showcased in songs like "Kingdom for a Heart". While Tommy, the drummer, does keep a quick beat, that's really all he does. There are very minimal rolls, and the beat kind of remains the same throughout most of the fast songs. But This is SPEED power metal, like Rhapsody, so that's okay. If it aint broke dont fix it, right? All the song's are very catchy (especially "My Land", which remains my favorite Sonata Arctica song, even throughout all the albums). Even the ballads, like the song "Replica", are good too. So, if you want power metal without the cheese, Sonata Arctica is the band you've been waiting for! These Finn's are on a rampage! no one can stop them! And god forbid if anyone trys! Go Finnland! Go Sonata Arctica!

Nicely Done Power Metal.......2002-12-24
A while back, my friend Korey recorded an album of his for me on tape by a power metal band from Finland called Sonata Arctica. Interested, I said sure. Music is all about discovering new bands, right? It's been quite a while since I've last listened to it (I have so many CDs), but Sonata Arctica's debut ECLIPTICA is a very nice album. Usually when one thinks of power metal, you think of lyrics focusing on Dungeons & Dragons, "Star Wars," or saving the Earth. That's not the case here. Sonata Arctica have wisely chosen to write about modern-day topics a la Dream Theater instead of opting for the medevial lyricism of, oh say, Yngwie Malmsteen.
I don't remember all of the songs that much, but there's some that stand out in my memory. "Blank File" and "My Land" are a great opening combo, with blazing guitar/keyboard interplay, speedy double-bass drums, and soaring clean vocals. Kudos must go out to the producer of this album, as the double-bass loses that annoying rickety-rackety sound of most power metal albums (I'm looking at you Kamelot). "8th Commandment" is also a good one. "Full Moon" has some cool piano work from lead singer Tony Kakko. "Letter to Dana" is a lovely ballad. Those are just some of the highlights.
If you're in the mood for some uplifting metal that rocks hard without dumbing itself to the cheesiness of most power metal, then ECLIPTICA is the way to go.
Best Debut Album Heard in a Long Time!!.......2002-07-24
Having discovered Sonata Arctica through their second Record "Silence", which by the way is a pure blast, I expected their debut Ecliptica to be missing some of the elements and lack the luster of their second release. I was pleasently surprised by what i heard! The music was melodious and rich in emotion. It's a very intense disc! But their are some negative points, although not critical. The singer has an english accent that didn't really show on "Silence", but does on Ecliptica and their music is less original, but very well performed. The tracks on this disc are wonderful. The ones that stand out are FullMoon, which has powerful vocals, Kingdom for a heart, My Land, the beautiful ballad Letter to Dana which showcases a medival sound(using flute), and the amazing Replica which is clearly an anti-war song.
I recommend purchaisng this disc and Silence.
These are purchases you won't regret! As for the Japanese Ecliptica which features the extra track "mary lou" it ain't worth dishing an extra 32$ for an extra track unless your're a huge fan or have the money.

Finnish power metal at it's finest........2005-01-31
Sonata Arctica's debut album not only launched them into success and reknown, but it showed the world that power metal can be about other things than dragons and middle earth. The melodic qualities as well as Tony's voice makes each and every song its own. Kingdom for a heart, Destruction preventor, Unopened, and Replica stand out as well-thought tracks. Sonata Arctica is coming to Atlanta in April, and no way will I miss it.
Finnish melodic speed metal kills.......2004-03-25
My daughter first heard Sonata and pestered me to buy Winterheart's Guild, their third album. I was instantly amazed by their combination of speed and melody. From the outset they never compromise, I have no idea how they survive playing a whole live set, but I intend to find out.
All three of their albums are superb, instantly identifiable, but constantly evolving. I consider them among the very best rock bands around, and probably the best speed metal band in the world. On this album only the ballad 'Letter to Dana' let's up the pace, and even that is excellent (though the lyrics are a bit humourous). My current favourite is 'Destruction Preventor' or perhaps 'Full Moon' or maybe 'Blank file'. Try to download samples from their website http://www.sonataarctica.info and then buy all three albums. If you like power metal you will love Sonata Arctica.
Awesome.......2003-09-18
If you are a fan of Stratovarius and you are looking for something fresh, this would be a good album to get. While at times they do sound like Stratovarius, and the band seems to talk about them a lot, they are in no way a clone of them. The first three tracks are awesome and the song Kingdom For A Heart is my favorite on the album. In short, if you are a fan of fast melodic power metal, don't miss out on this band, also their other two albums are also great.
Finnish boys can make really good metal music!.......2003-09-03
If you live in Northern Finland, you have to play fast or you'll freeze. Sonata Arctica has paid attention to this advice!
Their debut album opening track "Blank File" is so quick that Tony Kakko has even difficulties to sing it in gigs. Kakko has said that one of his most important models is Stratovarius's Visions album. Double pedals and music style has taken for Stratovarius.
But it's ok because Kakko has found his own personal way to make music and Sonata Arctica is not a cheap Strato-copy. This album is surely one of the convincing debuts I have ever heard.
Tony tells us many interesting stories about computers, Satan, war, love and liars. Lyrics are not write without mind and heart in spite of that fact that they aren't real stories. Band plays well together and sounds are pure and clear. If you like heavy ballads your favourite tracks will be My Land, Replica and FullMoon. They are allready classics, which Sonata fans want to listen over and over again. Unfortunaly, Tony has bored to Replica and My Land. That's why he sings these songs in gig one after another. My personal favourites are Kingdom For A Heart and Letter to Dana, which are absolutely five stars songs. Kingdom For A Heart is a quick and keybords leading song. I think it has written for Satan, but you can make your own bottom lines. Letter to Dana is tribute to Dana Scully ( The X-files )
Personaly,I like most flute in this song. All in all, there is no bad tracks for Eclictica album. Keep going boys!
INCREDIBLE.......2002-09-17
You have no idea how awesome this album is. In the genre of melodic metal, these guys are up at the top, definitely. I never hit the skip button, not ONCE!! The song writing is great, vocals AMAZING, and the drumming and guitar/keys sweeping combo is right on. It's very full of energy. Get this if you like Nightwish, Rhapsody, Stratovarius, Dream Theater, and the like. You will not be disappointed. (And can you believe these guys are only in their 20s???)

Ecliptica: Euro Power Metal Perfection!.......2002-08-29
When I was first introduced to European power metal, I wasn't that impressed (my preference was for American power metal bands like Iced Earth). In the beginning I dismissed most of the bands. I didn't like the speed coupled with the often cheesy lyrics and saccharine vocal melodies. However, I did eventually warm up to some European power metal bands. First, it was Stratovarius and Balance of Power. Later, it was bands like Rhapsody, Silent Force and Kamelot (though three-fourths of the band are Americans, Kamelot is definitely European power metal in style). I began to like the genre, even though European power metal began to stagnate a bit by the turn of the century. Too many European power metal bands were sounding too much alike. With a few notable exceptions, there was a certain level of sameness prevalent throughout the Euro power metal medium and I began to tire of the genre. Enter Sonata Arctica.
Sonata Arctica surprised just about everyone when they released their debut album, Ecliptica, in 1999. Though Sonata Arctica didn't wow everyone with their originality-they were following Stratovarius's Helloween/Malmsteen influenced power metal blueprint very closely-they still managed to stun the metal world with outstanding musicianship and absolutely beautiful vocal melodies. In fact, the vocal melodies on Ecliptica are so gorgeous and catchy, I think Sonata Arctica outshines their predecessor, Stratovarius, in their consistency when it comes to writing catchy songs. I don't believe any one Stratovarius disc is, overall, as unfailing in the vocal melody department as Sonata Arctica is on Ecliptica. To put it bluntly, Sonata Arctica does Stratovarius better than Stratovarius does! Yes, Sonata Arctica is that good!
The first track, "Blank File", is Euro power metal perfection as speedy guitar and catchy vocal melodies intertwine beautifully
reminding me of some songs by Stratovarius ("Black Diamond" comes to mind). Not as fast as track one, "My Land" boasts some fabulous vocal melodies and crunchy guitar work. "8th Commandment" is fast, furious and unforgettable-this song will stay in your head long after you've listened to it. "Replica" is a semi-ballad that tells the story of a returning war veteran who can't re-assimilate into society. Perhaps this is odd subject matter for a Euro power metal band to be covering, but the song works and it's even touching. The fifth track, "Kingdom for a Heart" is possibly the best Euro power metal song I've ever heard. It is extremely fast and catchy and I'll never get this song out of my head! "FullMoon" starts off with a quiet piano and soon becomes an excellent rocker. "Letter to Dana" is a powerful, sweeping Irish ballad. You read that right: An Irish ballad. I don't know what a power metal band from Finland is doing writing Irish ballads but I'm glad they did. "Letter to Dana" is a song about hope, missed chances and innocence lost. Cliched, perhaps, but the emotional performance of vocalist Tony Kakko and the fabulous lead guitar work pull you into the story. Unbelievable. Sonata Arctica may worship Stratovarius, but "Letter to Dana" shows us that they are no mere Stratovarius clones. "UnOpened" marks the return to Stratovarius-like songs as it moves at blinding speed. "Picturing the Past" is another classically-styled power metal speedster that will stay in my head until my death. Finally, the album closes with the fantastic and epic "Destruction Preventer" which again boasts stunning vocal melodies and lightning fast guitar playing.
Though Stratovarius is clearly the band's main influence on this album, Sonata Arctica doesn't just mindlessly ape their power metal forefathers as they do a masterful job of crafting truly memorable songs. "Kingdom for a Heart", "Letter to Dana" and "Destruction Preventer" are exceptional songs on an album where every track stands out. Vocalist/keyboardist Tony Kakko wrote Ecliptica and his ability to come up with outstandingly beautiful vocal melodies without sounding sappy is a gift. Like the band Shadow Gallery, Tony Kako is able to write vocal melodies that are catchy yet unpredictable. This makes Ecliptica the best European power metal album I've ever heard.
Keep it up, Sonata Arctica, you're doing fine thus far.
The only good power metal band!.......2002-02-20
Now, of course, when I say this, I am not counting Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, or Blind Guardian as power metal, even though they often (unfairly I might add) fall into that category. To me, power metal is a cheesy, overglossed, annoying display of musical indulgence by musicians who don't even posess the level of talent they flaunt. But, somehow, this band manages to be different.
After listening to my friend's copy of this CD (with great hesitation, I might add), I find that this is a surprisingly good CD. The songs are meaningful, catchy, and the musicians play very well. The drummer is indeed very talented, and he does a lot of technical and rhythmic drumwork, as opposed to the mindless snarefests of the average power metal band. The guitarist is a bit reckless at times, but he knows what he's doing, and he does it well.
But, that's not to say this album isn't without its flaws. The vocals can be a bit goofy in times, due to the fact that the singer is not so comfortable with English. That, and the lyrics can be a bit much as well. "Letter to Dana" is almost enough to make you lose your lunch. Generally speaking, the lyrics are head and shoulders above that of the average power metal band, but still they are not perfect. But, since I don't generally pay too close attention to lyrics, that's a minor complaint.
I guarantee that no matter what you like, you will probably enjoy this album. This comes from a person who would rather slam his hand in a car door than listen to Rhapsody or Stratovarius. If you are a fan of the genre, this is a definite must-have.
Something to think about........2002-02-12
Usually when I think of power metal I think of Timo Koltipelto shrieking about saving the environment. Or, just as often, I think of an obnoxious drummer who may has well be replaced by a drum machine set to "Double Bass Attack Program #3". Then there's the hideously saccharine lyrics, awkward vocal performances, and repetitive songs. But Ecliptica gives me something better to think about. Sonata Arctica is a fairly new band on the European melodic/power metal scene, and they play hard & fast and carry a great melody while they're at it. Vocalist/keyboardist Tony Kakko writes all the music, and this guy is truly talented. Granted, a keen melodic awareness is fairly common among these power metal bands, but our good man Tony has pretty much everybody else beat. Just listen to "Full Moon", one of the most absolutely perfect melodic metal songs ever written, I'd say. I can practically guarantee it will have you singing along with the chorus by the end. Musically, the band is heavily influenced by the likes of Stratovarius, but again I must stress the melodic strength of the songwriting. And while there is a sense of homogeneity in some of the 'merely' good speed metal songs, the real strength of Sonata Arctica is found in the mid-tempo songs. The power ballads "Replica" and "Letter to Dana" (love the flute and Celtic influence on that one) are totally great, and the crunchier, keyboard-heavy rockers "My Land" and the awesome "Full Moon" are pure goodness. "Blank File" and "8th Commandment" are remarkable speed metal tracks with fat hooks lodged in the choruses. At the end is "Destruction Preventer", which starts simply enough but also shows some progressive inclinations that would be more fully explored on the next album, Silence (which I also recommend). Pick this one up.
Near perfection.......2001-11-26
I don't know if I can forgive myself. When I first heard this album I thought it was a bit average. Well played of course, but average. Then it grew and grew on me, until it dawned that this is in fact one of those rare gems in music. Every single song is memorable, and I mean that sincerely.
This band have their almost poppy moments but I am very pleased with this album. The vocalist and keyboard player Tony is very good at both his feilds, while the guitarist sure knows what he's doing as well. The bass player is a little drowned, but the drummer is fast and precise. This band are power metal though (albeit a softer form than Blind Guardian or Manowar); if you bought this on the Dream Theater comparisons you may be a little let down. I was expecting it to be more intricate and epic and a little less accessible. The comparisons simply are not justified as Sonata Arctica don't have the depth, variation or, well, many other things that Dream Theater have. They don't even SOUND like DT, neither should they try to. I guess that's why I didn't realise its brilliance at first. This album simply rocks hard - it doesn't try to do anything else. Tracks like Full Moon, Blank File, Kingdom For A Heart and Letter To Dana are so well executed that you constantly sing in your head and they stay lodged there all day.
This is worth it, even for the import. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay much extra because I live in England, but nonetheless I recommend you splash out on it. It's a great album, and it deserves more credit than it gets.
Woooooooow!.......2001-11-02
If it weren't for my internet friends recommending this band to me, I would never have heard of this band. I'm glad I discovered them. I first bought "Silence", which I loved, great album, but I still HAD to get this one. So, I finally get it. Wow! Great stuff! The thing that really got me interested in this band to begin with was the comparisons to Dream Theater, which I totally hear. Great guitar/keyboard solos, tight drums (pun intended), and great vocals. I like how the guy can go from a high voice, to this weird deeper voice. He sounds really cool both ways. "My Land" is a great mid-paced, melodic rocker, probably my fave. "Replica" is a godly ballad, although "Letter to Dana" is a little goofy. I like the Irish flavor, though. "Blank File" and "8th Commandment" are really fast and energetic, and "Full Moon" is just a fun song (although I think he should have said IN the sky instead of ON the sky). All in all, a great album, with a feel that's nearly indescribable. I like albums with feels. I'm not a huge fan of symphonic power metal (Hammerfall, Stratovarius), I generally prefer the heavier stuff, like Iced Earth and Iron Maiden, but this is by far the best power metal album of that nature I have heard, and one of the best albums in general. You would be wise to buy this. The only bad thing is that they didn't put their full names in the book. Oh well. Buy this, buy it now!
