3 out of 5 stars Eric Peterson In corpse Paint?.......2006-05-10

I think I've lost all respect for Eric. I am a huge fan of Testament and always respected how they had their own style of music and didn't pose out like a lot of CA metal bands back in the day did. For Eric to jump on the corpse paint / band photos holding swords bandwagon is embarrising. It's not even a bandwagon any more. It's five years past it's Black Metal prime... Eric looks like a pudgy little dork with makeup on in the band photos I saw. He is a great guitarist and some of the Dragonlord stuff is good. But I can't take it seriously after seeing the band photo's. They look worse than COF wannabees..hehe

4 out of 5 stars soundtrack to your worst nightmares.......2005-12-21

What really separates this group from the rest of the death and black metal bands out there is their ominous and haunting keyboard tones. They add just the right amount of contrast to the ferocious vocals and monster riffs. I'll forgive the utterly cliché album title. This disc is the soundtrack to your worst nightmares

5 out of 5 stars Why Dosen't anyone notice the similarity to Emperor?.......2005-12-11

This is the first Black Metal album I've bought in a long time now. I heard it and just couldn't resist. I'm pretty skeptical of any fresh BM acts out there because they usually just can't cut it as far as speed and brutality go. These guys nail it. I don't think I've heard a BM album this good since the last Emperor record. Comparing Dragonlord with inferior musicians like "Cradle of Filth" just dosen't do this album justice. This is Black Metal the way it was meant to be played, none of that wimpy melody-without-the-edge stuff. If you dig Emperor, Satirycon, and Old Man's Child, buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Symphonic black metal!!!.......2005-11-15

I like this album over other bands that got the same style, is that simple. Dragonlord is a band of many veterans like Eric Peterson (Testament), and Steve Smith, so this guys know what they doing. This is Black metal in the vein of Dimmu Borgir, no more no less!!. So if you're into Dimmu, Cradle and Agathodaimon, try this!!!

5 out of 5 stars a true classic from a sadly underappreciated band.......2006-12-20

Domine, an Italian heavy/symphonic power metal band with better than average fantasy lyrics, a different but very good and very dramatic singer, and some of the best darn vocal melodies and meaty guitar riffs you've never heard, sadly never got the attention they deserved.

This is your lucky day. Not only have you discovered one of the true hidden musical gems this world has to offer, you have found their best album. As good as their other albums are (and they are all far, far above the genre standard), their very best album, and a classic by any reasonable standard -- Dragonlord -- happens to be the one that is most widely available at a reasonable price.

There's not a skippable track on this one. Epic to the bone. If you can get a copy, jump all over it and play it until the plastic wears out.

4 out of 5 stars A Great CD!.......2005-11-19

When Im playing Warcraft I pop this cd in. It goes right along with the game! It's almost like a soundtrack. The beginning of this album kicks ass. A semi classical piece with some spoken lyrics, "Your time has come. A storm is coming, our storm. And when it arrives it will shake the universe." and BAM into track 2. A high octane fast paced song that just rocks. This is what this kind of metal is about. High octaine music followed by high pitch lyrics about the Renaissance era. Good schtuff here!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful True Metal, Happy Posers Stay Away!!!.......2003-03-08

Domine is a great band, and of course NOT a typical power metal band, as a ... mentioned in his review for Amazon... Just to mention it, Domine exists since 1983, at a time when bands like Hammerfall, and other bands were just babies...
Anyway, Domine's music has nothing in common with bands like Hammerfall, or any other German-type power metal. Domine do not have happy melodies, but serious melodies out of the heart, they are inspired by bands like Warlord, Manowar, Queen, and many others, you can check my webpage for Domine if you'd like... [website]

2 out of 5 stars Uninspired, unoriginal; typical power metal,.......2001-10-21

Domine is another one of those typical power metal bands that come out of the woodworks; among those bands which Domine can be lumped with include Iron Fire, Hammerfall and Power Symphony.

Like each and every aforementioned band, Domine doesn't have any major flaws; the music is, without question, power metal. There's melody and epic (or corny) lyrics, strong guitarwork, a high pitched vocalist and overall decent musicianship. Sometimes it grips you; other times it puts you to sleep or sickens you. At times, it just fades into the background.

The largest problem with Domine is that they have no major strong points; being overall generic is both Domine's greatest strength and greatest flaw. You cannot necessarily go wrong with their albums, but there's nothing that really makes you want to stand up and praise your metal gods.

I'll go so far as to say "Dragonlord" (a concept/theme album based off a book series by... Michael Moorcock? Whatever) is plain boring for the most part; listening to a high pitched power metal vocalist sing typical power metal fantasy lyrics along with typical melodic power metal guitarwork is so amazingly typical, it's tiring. In fact, it's pretty sickening sometimes, in part due to their vocalist (he can't hold a stable note). This sickening/boring sense reaches it's climax at 'The Battle For the Great Silver Sword", which clocks in at "VII suites" of boredom and almost fourteen minutes of general "ickiness".

Overall, there are far better releases in the power metal field these days. This is another album which I feel will get lost in the masses along with other albums such as Heavenly's "Coming From the Sky". Other albums will remain memorable for years to come; Sonata Arctica's "Ecliptica", Falconer's self-titled album, Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys" saga, Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" for example. Others, such as "Dragonlord", will eventually vanish.

My ultimate suggestion; avoid "Dragonlord". Your money would be better invested in other places; say, the first fifteen dollars toward that bagel cutter you've been wanting for years.

4 out of 5 stars More like 4 1/2, but I can't do that! Great album..........2001-05-27

Ok, it took until song 8 ("Uriel the Flame of God") before I looked up and disliked a song. It was the ONLY song on the album that I didn't grin and say to myself, "Damn, this is GOOD." Now, admittedly, Domine isn't going to set any world records for originality, but if I (or you) was concerned about that, I wouldn't have bought a fantasy-themed epic power metal album in the first place, right? Right, I thought so.

That said, the power metal that is here is simply superb. "Anthem" is a suitable opener, bringing the tempo up and setting the tone for the dive into the speedy goodness that is "Thunderstorm," one of the finest songs on the album. Things don't slow down much, as Domine kicks their brand of anthem rock into high gear with awesome metal tune after awesome metal tune (i.e. "Last of the Dragonlords," "Defenders," and "Dragonlord").

But the true quality of the album is found at the epic finale, "The Battle for the Great Silver Sword." It's broken into 7 parts, each with a fairly distinct and noticeable sound to it. I dare you to check out the HEAVY riffing as Part IV ("War") becomes Part V ("Sword Fight") and not just bust out into wild thrashing and headbanging! It's THAT good.

This is not an original album. But Domine is one of a handful of simply awesome modern power metal bands doing the originators like Manowar, Iron Maiden and Armored Saint proud. Get all of this!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Black Metal!.......2005-09-10

In this metal-head's humble opinion, Rapture is better than most run of the mill black metal out there (dimmu, etc). Now maybe it's because I love Testament as much as I do, but I think the blend of old school thrash influence w/ the new melody and power of black metal just elevate this album beyond all reproach. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could. There hasn't been, nor will there be, another album like it, Eric Peterson's influence (from Testamrnt and anywhere else) is key to the sound of this record, and, personally, I think he does an outstanding job on vocals... he's got the growl and scream, and you can actually UNDERSTAND him!!! Excellent album, A++. I can't wait for the next one: Black Wings of Destiny.

4 out of 5 stars Well Worth Your Time..........2005-08-13

...If you are a fan of Symphonic Black Metal.

Ah yes, Symphonic Black Metal. It's the genre that bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth kick-started in the early ninties that soon became saturated with carbon-copies. What makes Dragonlord different? Not much really, it's still Black Metal laced with wonderous keyboard effects and symphonic elements, but this time it's good.

If you took the keyboard arrangements of Dimmu Borgir and mixed them with the thrashy riffs and songwriting style of Testament (In fact, Eric Peterson and Steve Smyth have come from Testament to make this side project) and bulked them up on Black Metal steroids, you wouldn't be too far off. Eric Peterson has even done a Black Metal makeover on his vocals so they sound more "evil". While they aren't the best Black Metal vocals you'll ever hear, they do a fine job. All in all, it's nothing very original, but it's executed very, very well.

Each song is as strong as the next and waste no time kicking your @$$, but there are some standouts. "Unholy Void" starts out the album with a bang as "Vals De La Muerte" (An instrumental opener that's actually great to listen to) draws to a close. The majestic keyboards coupled with brutal Thrash Metal riffs and a spacial atmosphere catch your attention and don't let it go for the rest of the album. "Tradition And Fire" keeps up the pace with another jewel of a song that's unrelenting in it's Symphonic Black Metal awesomeness.

If there was a single to the album, it'd most likely be "Born To Darkness". It's less brutal than the rest and focuses more on keyboard effects than the other songs (although there is an awesome riff near the end that makes mo go into a headbanging fit every time I hear it), and the already sweetend Black Metal cut is topped off with some clean vocals.

"Judgement Failed" is probably my favorite from the album. The blasting riffs kick you off into one hell of a ride that you won't regret taking. The song soon breaks out into the best clean vocals you'll hear from 'Rapture' topping the astonishingly beautiful keyboard effects that's pure captivating ecstasy for the ears, and it's as catchy as hell.

Another highlight is "Spirits In The Mist". The song is sheer symphonic bliss as the guitars lay the background for this song, but one shouldn't complain. The piano verses alone are worth listening to the song for. The whole peice reeks atmosphere and the closing riffs are the most mesmerising works of the album.

The production is excellent. The guitars are thick and punishing, and the drums are blasting and meaty. The bass is audiable enough to hear, although you probably shouldn't expect to hear the bass too often. The keyboards are, as they should be, enough in the background to provide tons of atmosphere, but forefront enough to let you in on their majesty.

So, is this album original? No. But is this album an awesome cut of Symphonic Black Metal? You bet it is. Thirty-five minutes and they don't waste a second delivering killer riff after killer riff. Although it's not the best Black Metal you'll find, it is a worthy and rock-solid investment that's screaming for attention. If you are a fan of Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child or any other Symphonic Black Metal band out there, I highly reccomend you give this a chance.

3 out of 5 stars Unholy Eric Peterson.......2004-10-13

Although there are some typical Testament influences on this album, Rapture can be mainly described as a melodic Black Metal album. Testament guitarist Eric Peterson is a big fan of Black Metal, mainly melodic Black Metal bands like Dimmu Borgir. On Rapture he combines his Thrash Metal roots with Black Metal. Besides playing the guitar, Eric Peterson also sings on this album. His vocals are also a mixture between Black Metal and Thrash Metal vocals. Its works surprisingly well. Although most of the songs are fast, sometimes I wished that some songs would be faster and contain more blast-beats. Also the arrangements are rather simple compared to his main influence Dimmu Borgir. Further complaints are the short length of the album and the sloppy production. Sometimes the band doesn't sound like playing very tight. Because this is Eric Peterson's first effort in a Black Metal band I hope that further releases will improve. I still recommend this album to Testament fans who do not dislike keyboards and fans of melodic Black Metal in general.

4 out of 5 stars Not great, but good Thrash Metal !.......2004-06-09

I really enjoy this album. It's good Thrash Metal with some Power Metal and Black Metal influences. The guitars and drums are strong and the pace is fast with a lot of slower breaks. The vocals are good, but not great. Rapture has an Epic feel to it with longer tracks and some catchy Power Metal guitar riffs. I know there are members of Testament in Dragonlord, but I can't really feel too much resemblance in musical styles. Dragonlord is definitely going for a different sound. While the album goes in a lot of directions, the musicianship is very focused. I feel the keyboards are a little over used and sometimes out of place, but I still think Rapture is a very solid release. I give Rapture 3.5 stars not 4, only because the replay value is only moderate. I'm looking forward to their next release.

    4 out of 5 stars Dry'n'traditional.......2004-05-21

Overall this sounds pretty much like traditional 80's melodic metal, which is not bad at all because we're lacking here the constant double bass storm spoiling too many power metal albums. Although many of the structures and melodies on this album have been heard for some 50'000 times before, Domine's serious devotion to the 60's fantasy saga of Melnibone breathes new life into them in the form of a very glorious and warm, but dry atmosphere. Rhapsody doesn't have one, neither does Blind Guardian, and you can forget all the power metal bands with the modern sound; they could by no means sound this old.
And for Domine, it's a huge bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, very solid.......2001-11-10

This is a very good a solid album. Some people might say this is just another double-bass power metal band... they cant be more wrong. Very epic, clean and polished vocals combined with perfect guitar riffs. Amazing CD. Any true metal fan will love these guys.

    3 out of 5 stars Black Blade.......2000-06-04

I haven't heard this power metal album, but I've read mixed reviews of it. In any event, the subject of inspiration for the entire album is Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone fantasy novel series. Like Tolkien, it's been done before. In this case, by Hawkwind, Blue Oyster Cult, and Cirth Ungol.

    5 out of 5 stars Just Fantastic!.......2000-03-01

Domine is one of the few new heavy metal bands that do something really good, creative and new. I'm very impressed with this album, inspirated by many sources, from Manowar to, guess, J.R.R. Tolkien! And I have to say: DOMINE RLZ!
