Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Alfred Newman's Final Epic Bow.......2004-10-12
Varese Sarabande has again done credit to the genre of great film scores with their recent release of the expanded (if not full) Alfred Newman score for George Stevens' production of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (Newman and Stevens had also worked together on "Gunga Din," one of Newman's best efforts). The film title missed the mark a bit as far as the film is concerned. This is probably not the greatest of the Bible epics, but it is an interesting entry nevertheless. For those of us who live in the area of Lake Powell and southern Utah it is a trip to view this film with its very familiar Red Rock backdrops filling in for Palestine. And the acting was in many cases first rate. Newman's score was also an enormous plus. Perhaps not one of his best, it was certainly a great score. Based largely on a major theme that is clearly reminiscent of his earlier score for "The Robe," this is a major triumph, as is this three disc presentation. Nicely packaged and produced at an unbelievable price, this is a must for film score buffs. Disc one contains the original soundtrack recording (with updated sound)including Handel's chorus from "The Messiah" which Stevens' insisted upon using instead of Newman's own ending. Curiously, Newman's choral "Exit Music" would have been a much better fit for the film and is included here. Discs two and three include the majority of Newman's original score, as he intended it. It is really majestic stuff, although much of the score took a sombre tone. I cannot wait to enjoy this score driving down the Burr Trail. It is music that mataches the grand landscape, and the greatest story ever told.
Soundtrack, entire film score and composer ~ Alfred Newman.......2004-10-10
Varese Records presents Alfred Newman's score for "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965/196 mins), George Stevens directs an epic that shares the story and life of Jesus Christ ~ featuring Max Von Sydow [Jesus], Dorothy McGuire [Mary], Claude Rains [Herod the Great], Charlton Heston [John the Baptist], Angela Lansbury [Claudia], Donald Pleasence [Satan, the Dark Hermit], David McCallum [Judas Iscariot], Sidney Poitier [Simon of Cyrene], Telly Savalas [Pontius Pilate], Martin Landau [Caiaphas], Robert Blake [Simon the Zealot], Jamie Farr [Thaddaeus], Roddy McDowell [Matthew], Jose Ferrer [Herod Antipas] and John Wayne [Centurion] and many more with memorable performances ~ yet at the time of release, received low praises for the director and cast.
The music, yes the music is where this film shines...Alfred Newman, one of the most respected composers of his time was given the assignment ~ it was Newman who gave us the "20th Century Fox" fanfare theme...also a number of other film scores "Anastasia", "Diary of Anne Frank", "Captain from Castile", "Gunga Din", "How The West Was Won", "How to Marry A Millionaire", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "Man of Galilee", "Mark of Zorro", "Nevada Smith", "The Razor's Edge", "The Robe", "The Song of Bernadette" and "Wuthering Heights" ~ all of them were winners.
The Greatest Story Ever Told is here complete for the very first time and has everything from "Original Soundtrack Album" and then the "Entire Film Score" on the last two discs...making this a three disc "film-score-buffs" dream come true ~ completely remastered, with liner notes that will tell all the inside scoop from author, screenwriters, director and composer...just the way we like 'em!

Shades of Prince.......2006-11-27
Released in 1986, Drums Along the Mohawk is the solo debut album from singer/guitarist Jean Beauvoir, who was a member of the seminal punk band the Plasmatics and was involved behind the scenes with artists as varied as KISS, John Waite, and the Ramones.
Drums Along the Mohawk (named after the classic novel I assume, though Beauvoir's wild hairstyle may have had just as much to do with the title) is a pop/rock album with plenty of funk influences. Comparisons to Prince are inevitable. Beauvoir was in fact asked by Prince to join his touring band prior to this album's release. Beauvoir's style isn't as over the top as Prince's, however, and leans more towards rock than funk. This is a very solid and very enjoyable album from start to finish, without a single song that could be considered "filler".
In addition to his solo career, Beauvoir would go on to front the acclaimed AOR/melodic rock act Crown of Thorns, which has more of a straightforward rock sound. If you like what you hear on this album, and don't mind a less funky approach, you'd do well to check out Crown of Thorns.
Drums Along the Mohawk should make most fans of 80's pop/rock quite happy, especially those who enjoy what Prince was releasing at the time. Fans of Beauvoir's work with Crown of Thorns should also check this one out.
Raw & Fonk-ay.......2005-10-15
I had the original album back when it first came out, When it was cool to listen to funk rock, So if you like stuff like Mothers Finest, Dan Reed Network, then you'll dig this album it's raw and funky too bad the album never really got any airplay or at least not in Slowvannah Georgia!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great Anthology from an Under-appreciated Band.......2006-09-20
Crown of Thorns is another quality AOR/melodic rock group on the Frontiers label. Led by singer/guitarist Jean Beauvoir, who has ties to bands as varied as the Plasmatics and the Ramones to Doro and KISS, the band plays fairly straightforward, not too heavy, melodic rock with a few quirks. To my ears they sound like the offspring of TNT and Enuff Znuff with some trace elements of King's X thrown in for good measure.
The 3-disc compilation Crown Jewels provides a nice overview of the band's career, and features a total of 46 tracks (including two new Christmas songs), all of which have been digitally remastered. A 24-minute video interview with Beauvior is also included, which is a nice addition. This is a great way to become familiar with the band's work, though it does have a somewhat hefty price tag. It's also a nice collection for long-time fans, as it is the first time we get to hear these songs with such improved sound quality.

Rockin' good fun........2004-05-01
Well. I just started listening to this one again recently. Bought the re-issue shown here and wow. Somehow this record makes more sense at 37 than it did when it first came out. (Maybe I've just lightened up???) This record just cracks me up. A very funny record. Blues are supposed to make you "laugh your troubles away". This does. Good rockin' edge throughout and no acoustic stuff. The added cd is a nice extra and is what sold me on picking up the reissue. Cheers.

Album Description
The Crown of Thorns embodies the sacrifice at the heart of the Passion story in reflections such as the Stabat Mater text, a moving portrayal of the anguish of Christ's mother, unaware of the resurrection to come. The vast power of the royal courts of England and Scotland may be long gone, but the sumptuous sounds of their worship are not lost. This disc brings together music of some of the most outstanding but now little-known composers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and introduces a major new work by one of this century's most remarkable composers, James MacMillan.

Jean Beauvoir shines on this album.......2003-05-12
Jean Beauvoir proves himself to be a multi-facetad performer on "Kharma". Crown of Thorns does their original compositions such as "Believer", a richly-lyriced song written by Jean, and "Before it Slips Away", a rocking love song. The most outstanding track on this album, however, is the amazingly executed cover of George Harrison's classic, "My Sweet Lord". Beauvoir is off the beaten path, but this Crown of Thorns CD is well worth the journey. Highly Recommended!
