The Beast is, of course, Iron Maiden, whose 1982 Number of the Beast is one of heavy music's paramount releases--as any metal fan worth their mettle knows. This 16-song tribute, dominated by European underground metal bands, is often akin to death-metal karaoke. With songs from both the Paul DiAnno and Bruce Dickinson eras of Maiden, most of the true-to-original versions are decent, highlighted by Grave Digger's "Running Free," Sonata Arctica's "Die with Your Boots On," and Iced Earth's "Transylvania." Interpreting Maiden is the maiden of Singery, Kimberly Goss. Her higher, more delicate vocals on "Number of the Beast" are surprising but interesting. Tierra Santa's version of "Flight of Icarus" is initially slow, but then sped up to an even faster tempo than the original, which is also unexpected. Cradle of Filth appropriately tackle "Hallowed Be Thy Name," the ominous graveyard vocals certainly bearing no resemblance to Dickinson's. The tuned-down death-metal attack of Disbelief's "Stranger in a Strange Land" is another fresh take on a classic cut. Still, this tribute, while a treat for devotees, ultimately proves there ain't nothing like the real thing. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars A Calm Way to Enjoy Celin's Hits.......2005-07-08

This album has collected most of Celin's greatest hits and played them to the piano with a pleasant suggestion of the stringed instruments in the background. It would be more complete if Where Does My Heart Beat Now and I Drove All Night were also included. Nevertheless, the orchestration is awesome, and the music overall is very soothing. The tempo is slow and benefitial for studying or just relaxing. The tracks just melt into each other, and you find yourself filling the lyrics to the various songs as they play. This Cd is especially good if you are an enthusiastic fan of Celin Dion and classical music because the two concepts are blended in this album. And even if you are neither, the music is quite calming anyways.

4 out of 5 stars Most fans will like it.......2006-06-07

Excellent song choices, vocals range from ho hum (Mark Slaughter, Chris Jerico)to great (Lemmy, Chuck Billy, Robin McAcAuley), drumming and bass all very good, some of the guitar playing is so good that I was blown away (Bruce Krulick, Craig Goldy, Nino Bettencourt, George Lynch). However if you are on a budget and don't have Live after Death, GET IT instead

1 out of 5 stars What the...?.......2006-05-30

I will refrain from going down the list of songs on this heap. They are all bad. What makes them bad is really sad too...some of the vocal performances are outstanding, but all of the intrumental parts are just badly produced, sounding incredibly thin, having been performed by studio artists. I own every Maiden album and every Maiden "tribute" album and this is by far the worst. Do not let some of the big names on vocals rope you into buying this one. I really want to know how they feel about this- did they hear the background band at all- I would venture to guess not. To compare, listen to Di'Anno's other versions of Wrathchild since his exile from Maiden- even the his live version on "The Beast...Live" is better!

4 out of 5 stars Where's Iced Earth's covers?.......2006-05-18

Back in 2002, the progressive metal band 'Iced Earth', who gets a lot of their influence from Maiden, did a Tribute cover album called "Tribute to the Gods" of some of their favorites and two of the tracks on that album were Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Both of which were IMO probably better in both musical arrangement and vocals than the originals. The vocals were sung by the now former Iced Earth vocalist Matt Barlow and sound extremely close to, but also IMO Bruce Dickinson's vocals on the original versions from '82. The music tracks are also stronger. Both use the same basic arrangement, but with updated production and guitar riffing styles. Quite frankly, it's a shame that the entire Maiden catalog couldn't have been redone by Iced Earth.

With regards to this album, I previewed a lot of the tracks and quite frankly, they're missing the vocal range of Matt Barlow from Iced Earth. In fact, they make you wanna go back and listen to the original Maiden version, while the Iced Earth versions sound so similar to the originals that you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best if not THE best tribute albums ever........2006-05-11

I have lots of tribute albums, and this is one of thye best ever. Right up there with Nativity in Black.

1 out of 5 stars Thirty-foot pole? Not even!.......2006-02-27

Generally speaking, this tribute album's covers are poorly done. They're watered down, the vocals are only nailed in a couple songs- and you'd better be able to, Paul, after recording 50 different versions of Wrathchild since you were given the boot 25 years ago- the guitars end up sounding out-of-tune or off-note, and, well... some of the people on here who aren't currently enlisted in a band probably have a reason for it and it shows in this album. I guess the only way this album could really serve as a tribute is that it underscores the notion that Iron Maiden is too high-caliber for anyone else to get right. The only cover track on here that I would ever consider actually listening to is Flight of Icarus. The instruments weren't particularly spot-on but it's the only song (other than Wrathchild) that doesn't induce vomiting from the vocals alone. Tim Owens comes very close to sounding like Dickinson.

The gesture is nice and all, but it does reek of commercialism and, more often than not, the tunes are dumbed down.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: DO NOT BUY UNTIL U HEAR THE PREVIEW..........2006-10-22

I've heard quit a few tributes to IM, but this one really blows. The music just has no dynamics, and sometimes even sounds out of tune. If u want to waste some money on classic instruments performing IM songs i recommend that you buy THe Piano Tribute, but do not even bother with this one. It is a rather experimental attempt to play already perfected music and doesn't even give you that satisfaction that you might have had if you are a Metallica fan and have listened to Apocalyptica's tribute to them.

1 out of 5 stars The CD IRON MAIDENS SHOULD BE "WITHOUT".......2006-01-27

Being an Iron Maiden fan i thought this would be a good one. But Stupid me i didn't read the warnings from other buyers. This is the worst cd ever. well if you pretend its not iron maiden songs being destroyed, i guess it may be acceptable. A waste of money. i will probably toss it out with the rest of the trash. This is my opinion. DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to the warnings of others PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Comparatively Disappointing.......2004-12-19

I am a big fan of almost all "String Quartet Tribute to -" 's, but this one is an exception. The arrangements are rather poor and on some tracks, the instruments are slightly out of tune - which is really distracting. They add a set of bongos / congos into the mix, and it feels really foreign and out of place. As much as I love this genre and Iron Maiden, this tribute really does justice to neither.

3 out of 5 stars LOL.......2004-10-08

When i Heard the sample tracks it just made me feel like turning on some REAL Maiden.

5 out of 5 stars Something old, something new.......2005-07-25

This album proves why Iron Maiden is the Beast - because of best songs. But, after hearing around 200 of their songs a thousand times, it starts to get boring to hear the same style over and over again. Now we have some huge hits in a new, more modern and powerful interpretations. It's good for Iron Maiden to keep the spirit alive, and good for the small bands to get their names heard.

In my opinion, Cradle Of Filth did an awesome cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name - adding more power and horror to the song. The second riff is so powerful now that it's beyond comprehension. Dani Filth's best performance, I guess his vocal chords surgery had a meaning afterall.

Children Of Bodom added clarity, power, and speed to Aces High, a good cover.

Sonata Arctica did the same with Die With Your Boots On, but they made a song that was almost a B-side an excellent, fast and powerful song. That heavy metal song just needed to be covered by a power metal band.

Therion did a huge job with Children Of The Damned, made a completely new song, dark and scary. Much better than the sad attempt by Skid Row, which basically only played the song, never covered it to make it something different.

Burden Of Grief's Prowler is great for my ear, powerful grunts with melodical riff in the background. Who would say that such an old song can sound so new? And different than similar attempts from new bands.

Disbelief did a great job with Stranger In A Strange Land, Maiden's riffs are powered up, and vocals show despair that the original song was meant to show. However, it gets boring before the end of the song.

Grave Digger's cover of Running Free is very interesting. They captured the spirit of the song.

Tierra Santa's Flight Of Icarus shows good potential in the beginning, but later gets boring and shows the limited abilities of the singer.

Other songs are just bad (Steel Prophet, Sinergy) or bring nothing new (Rage, Iced Earth, Six Feet Under).

4 out of 5 stars Quite an interesting mix..........2005-02-24

If you have read my review of 'Keepers of Jericho: A Tribute To Helloween,' then you probably know how I feel about tributes. This is a bag of interestingly mixed tunes from an even stranger mix of artists. I have sampled the album here, and I will say that with a vast majority of the contributions, I am most impressed. However, like on the Helloween one, this does have it's share of butcheries. Let's take a look.

    1. Steel Prophet-"The Ides of March/Purgatory": Well, unfortunately, all I heard was about half of "Ides of March," but I know Steel Prophet's sound well enough to be able to picture what "Purgatory" will sound like. Probably, pretty good.

    2. Children of Bodom-"Aces High": It seems that melodic death actually does a pretty good job with Iron Maiden, and "the Bodom bashers" are no exception. A lower key than the original, and much shriller vocals, but ultimately, it's just as good as the original.

    3. Rage-"The Trooper": Not too hot. Rage's singer just doesn't pull this one off well enough.

    4. Cradle of Filth-"Hallowed Be Thy Name": My favorite on the album! In spite of a massive difference in vocal sounds, this is perfect!

    5. Grave Digger-"Running Free": Meh, this is faithful to the original, but the singer, who generally sounds awesome, doesn't sound too hot here.

    6. Burden of Grief-"Prowler": A more extreme death metal band covers the song that pretty much introduced Iron Maiden. Good, but the key is a bit low, which might turn off some hardcore fans.

    7. Sonata Arctica-"Die With Your Boots On": Well, this is not quite as extravagant as the Cradle of Filth cover, but my current favorite Finnish group does a worthy contribution here, with vocals that fit perfectly.

    8. Therion-"Children of the Damned": Not too hot. The singer just can't hit the high notes that Bruce can, and he sounds really bored.

    9. Iced Earth-"Transylvania": Awesome. Though Matt doesn't get to sing here (it's an instrumental), I find it quite faithful to the original.

    10. Opeth-"Remember Tomorrow": Also awesome. Though the death vocals aren't as emphasized as Opeth normally would emphasize them, it's actually for the better.

    11. Sinergy-"The Number of the Beast": Awesome! And to think, the singer is a CHICK! This actually Alexi Laiho's second appearance here; he plays 1st guitar with this band, and also plays 1st guitar and sings for Children of Bodom.

    12. Disbelief-"Stranger In A Strange Land":UGGGGHHHHH! By far the worst on the tribute. The vocalist for this band is okay in general, but Disbelief just doesn't sound right for this in the first place.

    13. Tierra Santa-"Flight of Icarus": Not awful, but a bit strange; it starts out as more of a ballad, and slowly builds up.

    14. Dark Tranquillity-"22 Acacia Avenue": Another Scandinavian melodic death band contributes. Overall, it sounds pretty good, though, naturally, the vocals don't fit...at first. Once I got used to it, I really enjoyed this one.

    15. Six Feet Under-"Wrathchild": Actually, you don't need to buy this to get this; it can also be found on their 2000 cover album, 'Graveyard Classics.' It's pretty much what you might expect from Chris Barnes, him being the master of death metal and all like that.

    16. Darkane-"Powerslave": Meh, this isn't nearly as good as the original, but for an extreme thrash act, this is pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting album........2005-02-10

This is NOT a good album.
To start with, half of the band lack the emotion of real 'Maiden.
    * The Steel Prophet cover isn't too shabby, something I can't say about some of the other covers.
    * As much as I love Children of Bodom, I don't like their covers: Alex doesn't have the voice.
    * The vocalist of Rage sings like a japanese woman with a sore throat which is strange because last time I checked, Rage's singer was a man. I don't mean that women can't sing 'Maiden, on the countrary, the After Forever cover of "The Evil That Men Do" is magnificent, but Rage's cover is terrible.
    * Then the good, old Cradle of Filth. Never a band with a more fitting name walked the face of earth. Except that, in case of this one, "Filth" isn't strong enough to describe what I think of them. No, I like the instrumental part of *SOME* songs, but the singer seems like he is dying from a lung disease.
    * Grave Digger's cover is unremarkable.
    * The Burden of Grief cover is just what to expect from a Death Metal band. I like it.
    * Being a big Sonata Arctica fanboy, my opinion is biased: I love Sonata's cover of "Die With Your Boots On" but then I love everything Sonata Arctica has done before.
    * Therion's attempt at "Children of the Damned" would've passed if the singer didn't sound to be bored to death singing this song. I admit I never liked that particular Maiden song, though. I can understand this chap.
    * Iced Earth's instrumental-only piece is a joy and I never was fond of IE in particular (there are better bands than them).
    * I always had a great interest in Opeth as the band has plays in two completely different styles. This cover has a typical Opeth sound.
    * Surprisingly Sinergy's cover of one of IM's most popular songs sounds very close to the original Maiden. A good cover.
    * Disbelief did to "Stranger In A Strange Land" what the barbarians did to Rome. 'Nuff said.
    * Tierra Santa's cover of "Flight of Icarus" is interesting: it is made in the ballad/alt-rock style for the first half. It's an interesting piece of music.
    * My feeling for Dark Tranquility is reminiscent of my feeling about Cradle of Filth. Since 22 Acacia Avenue is one of the first songs by IM I heard as well as one of my favorites, I am annoyed by this particular song.
    * Six Feet Under's cover is bland.
    * The last song is also unremarkable. I can't find anything good nor bad to say about it.

This is a pretty interesting album. I know I won't listen to it for long but it's worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars The best Tribute album for the "Beast".......2004-10-21

How many so called tribute albums are there for Iron Maiden? 10, 22, 666...it doesn't matter. This one, along with Vol. 2 are all you need if you are a fan of Maiden. As to all those of you who are downplaying the female vocals, I would like to point out that there exists and ALL female band known as the Iron Maidens that can destroy any cover of any Iron Maiden song with perfection. Check them out if you don't believe me www.theironmaidens.com. Unfortunately, unless you are on the left coast, you may never see them because they are based out of so-cal. That being said, this album does an excellent job of recreating many of the classic Maiden tunes that we all know and love. Some of the highlights I think include Darkane's version of "Powerslave", Opeth doing "Remember Tomorrow", fairly close copies of "Number of the Beast" by Sinergy and "Die w/Your Boots On" by Sonata Arctica, a fantastic cover of "Hallowed By Thy Name" by Cradle of Filth which also appears on their Cruelty and the Beast Bonus CD, and an awesome cover of Transylvania (done instrumentally) by Iced Earth. Their are many other covers that will knock you out of your mullet too including "Children of the Damned", "The Trooper", "The Flight of Icarus", and "22 Acacia Avenue" just to name a few. Many casual metal fans may be reading this and not recognize some of these bands. This is because most are Death Metal/Black Metal outfits that play music that is influenced by many British and Scandinavian Metal bands of the past. What better way to pay homage to them than to honor the kings. These bands do an excellent job. In my opinion, and you are entitled to disagree, this and its' partner CD (VOL. 2) are the best tribute albums that exist for Iron Maiden.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!.......2003-12-06

First I would like to respond to neon buttmunch. The reason that your so called 'crazy/thrash/screaming' heavy metal bands play music written by a 'power metal' band such as maiden is because they were INFLUENCED by them. And by the way, maiden is as straight up metal as they come. Now, these covers appeal to all metal fans of all metal sects. Sure youve got 6 feet under and Dark Tranquility playin the tuff guy hardcore style, and therion and sonata arctica playing the riff heavy power style, and cradle doing a the BEST version of Hallowed be thy name that I have ever heard (Excepting, of COURSE the original) This cd is a must have for ALL metal fans, whether they be followers of old school Iron Maiden or not, this disc kicks ass!

    2 out of 5 stars A tribute to a lengendary band.......2000-08-23

It's the seconde official tribute to iron maiden and it's less good than the first; the choice of music it's worse because they are always in the same musical style, almost the works of bands who give the tribute is just a works of copy even if it's symphatic to listen them, there is an air of deja-vu. For a fan it's just an album to add in your collection...

      3 out of 5 stars Maiden tributes.......2005-09-25

Anyone looking for a Maiden tribute album that doesn't suck? Haha! Get Worlds Only Female Tribute to Iron Maiden by the Iron Maidens... these chicks can rock!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all!.......2001-04-08

Anyone that's heard most other Maiden tributes (like 'A Call To The Irons volume I & II' or 'Slave A To The Power') know their like a slap to Iron Maiden's face!! It's just a bunch of death/black metal singers from horrible bands screaming into the mic like friggin' morons!! How anybody could like that crap is beyond me! But this tribute album however is pretty damn good, nice vocals and good musicians. And I love the fact that Paul Di'Anno (the original Iron Maiden singer) did some songs. It would have been REALLY COOL if he'd done some post Iron Maiden songs (to let us hear what Maiden would have been like had he not have departed from the band in the first place) but it was still very cool to hear him do the tributes he did. So if your looking for an Iron Maiden tribute CD this is the one to get.

      1 out of 5 stars A tribute?.......2000-04-06

I have bought every Iron Maiden Tribute album I can get my hands on and so far they are all good except for this one. Overall it was a very major dissappointment. The lyrics as well as the music are very watered down and it seems that most of the album is just Paul trying to cover some of his former band's music, and not very successfully

4 out of 5 stars Excellent tribute of melodic vocalists.......2000-01-30

Although this is the only Maiden tribute in my collection, I believe it is the best. I've listened to samples of others. I believe the others don't cut it with death metal gutterals. I don't care for all of the singers on here but a few did excellent jobs. Goes to show how difficult it is to imitate Bruce. Only too much Paul Di'anno on here. My opinion is tribute isn't really a tribute if it contains a former lead singer of that very band, but all in all, it's good and I enjoy it. Best cuts are 2 Mins. to Midnight, Hallowed be thy name and the Trooper. Anyway definitely a keeper. By the way, Paul Di'anno songs sound re-mixed; different from original 1st two albums, could he it be he re-sang for this cd?

4 out of 5 stars For hardcore Maiden Fans.......1999-08-23

This is a very good tribute to one of the best bands of rock history. If you like rock, buy this album.... and if you like Iron Maiden you MUST buy this album...all the songs are very good. Ofcourse no one can do better singin on Maiden songs than Dickinson himself but the music overall is very good. The only reason I didnt give it a 5 star is because there are already like 3 tributes to Maiden and thats a lot of competition and if you have all maiden albums and all tribute albums this one will be all repetition to you and nothing will be new. But I highly recommend this album to rock fans!
