Classic!.......2007-06-27

All of these songs are classics, why even argue about it? This band has been imitated and venerated by so many others, Christian Death definitely started something here. The only thing is, I'm not so sure if the other copycats understand the complexity of Williams' music and ideas. His own wife said that in 1994 Rozz told her he "had accepted Jesus." And before he died "he called his mother and let her know that he accepted the Lord. In his last conversation with his roommate he said he was going to be with God." Rozz Williams certainly was much more multi-faceted than other musicians and fans even knew, which made for a lot of genuine torment in the music, and a type of anguished singing voice that, as I mentioned, is heavily imitated even today.

Dark Slab of Ghoulish Mysticism with Driving Riffs - A MUST HAVE FOR ANY COLLECTION.......2007-01-26

Back in the early 80s, when this slow, grinding,disturbing set of tunes was first issued, it was considered shocking. (Shocking in a real way, in a way that Alice Cooper and Kiss only played at--making Black Sabbath look like the Brady Bunch!). Replete with themes of necrophilia, satanism, and graverobbing--no nightmare is left unturned--this dark masterpiece has a sinister feel to it that defies all pop sensibility and leaves only the seedy underbelly of LA left in its ruin...Lyrically, it borders somewhere between evil and unintentionally funny....but nevermind, this is a good buy as it includes the original gothic/darkwave (then called death-rock) magna opus "Only Theatre of Pain" in its entirety, along with the later remix EP (now out of print) entitled "Death Wish." Take my word for it....if you are new to gothic rock or just completing your collection, THIS is the place to start. (Don't waste your time with later efforts--Valor all but ruined this band with his narcisistic insipid lyricism)--this is the real deal! (BTW, if you're feeling experimental, be sure and snag CD's hard to find "Catastrophe Ballet"--the monumental follow up LP to this dark little treasure--it's very different but equally satisfying)

Amazon keeps recommending this to me because I like 45 Grave.
But, after wasting money on another album by this band, "Scriptures", I know better. Cool name, cool logo, lame music. I won't be fooled twice.

Not Just For the Shy/Skinny DR kids!.......2006-06-28

When I bought this on vinyl in 1984, you didn't have all the sub-genres you have now. You also didn't have easy access to new music (e.g. the internet). If you saw a used record that looked even remotely punk, you bought it. Especially if you saw it was on Frontier, and had Rikk Agnew from the Adolescents! Hence my introduction to Christian Death. What started off as a "fluke" purchase became one of my favorite records. While I could never get into the whole "goth" thing, I've always been a fan of this album. Nice to see that it is now "new & improved" with (6) bonus trax. The original vinyl only had the 1st (10) songs. Of the (6) bonus trax, I will comment on (4) of 'em:

1) Deathwish - Great Song! I swear I've heard it before, but don't remember it being on the original LP. Anyone know where it came from (the liner notes contain no details on the bonus trax, which is why I only gave this release 4 stars).
2) Romeo's Distress/Spiritual Cramp - Alternate versions of 2 of the best songs from the original LP.
3) Dogs - One of their best! Originally on the Hell Comes To Your House compilation (which I believe has also been reissued on CD).

While I still have an occassional urge to hear Catastrophe Ballet, this is the only LP they did with Rikk Agnew, so all subsequent releases lose their "punk" edge.

The Best DeathRock CD EVER!!!.......2005-07-14

The Cd of Only Theater of pain was the first Cd ever that got me to go to the darker side of music. When i heard thsi Cd it was awsome. Very meaninful and dark lyrics that Rozz Williams had made for this album. The other very beautiful CD is Ashes. He is the best most original rocker that i have seen. A from this point i have not heard a CD that can pass Rozz's masterpiece of Only Theater of Pain.

pretty good, but not great.......2007-01-12

This is the third album by Motley. They had already become arena warriors with their previous album "Shout at the Devil". While "Shout" and "To fast for love were great", this album finds Motley Crue slipping a bit. Their are some good songs:"Save our souls, Louder then hell, Home sweet home, but their are also plenty of filler like "fight for your rights" and "Raise your hand to rock". The punk feel and attitude of their first two albums is all but abandoned. While the songs are as catchy as ever, Motley Crue sounds slightly subdued. It's a good album, but after the first two discs Motley Crue seems like their excesses are starting to catch up to them.

Theatre of Pain, a hard to rate album........2006-11-23

The Theatre of Pain album came out in 1985 right when hair metal was starting to take over the scene. Now Motley Crue were always more glam then hair, but in this album they are full blown hair metal, and thats not nessecarily a bad thing. However, this album pictures Motley Crue at there worst shape, all 4 members were dependent on drugs and it was starting to slur there music and song writing. Along with the fact a few songs were over played. Let's look at the cd packaging.

Cd is remastered perfectly with bonus tracks and is in hard cover case. 5/5

Inserts - alot of cool photo's, linear notes from the band members, and song lyrics are all included. 5/5

Song time

City Boy Blues - This is my favorite track on the album, its got good lyrics and good music to go along with it, a great opener. 5/5

Smokin' in the Boys Room - This song is one of the most over rated, and over played Motley Crue songs, it dosen't even sound that good, if it weren't so played it might not be so bad but in this case it is, I do listen to it but not very often. 2/5

Louder Then Hell - This is a short song, with some good lyrics and good music to back it up, my 2nd favorite song on the cd. 5/5

Keep Your Eye on the Money - This song was a message from the band telling them not to sell out and make sure you know your audience, its an ok song with good music. 4/5

Home Sweet Home - This is the better of the singles for this cd, but this one isn't that good either, its highly over rated but its better then smokin'. 3/5

Tonight (we need a lover) - This song isn't that bad, its got ok lyrics and ok music, but just not that super, 4/5

Use it OR Lose it - Another short song on the cd but this one sounds decent. 4/5

Save Our Souls - this song seems a bit repetitive, but it still sounds ok, just not superb. 4/5

Raise Your Hands to Rock - This song is not that good, Vince's voice sounds annoying on it, and the music isn't that good and its short in time length. 2/5

Fight for Your Rights - This song is good, it had good lyrics and the music is good enough to back it up. 5/5

Bonus Tracks -

Home Sweet Home Demo - This demo actually sounds better then the song, if they had put this one on instead of the one they did, it would have been a better song. 4/5

Smokin' in the boys room - It dosen't have the harmonica on it, which does make the song sound a little better. 3/5

City Boy Blues - This demo is actually better then the song they put on it, and I love the one they put on it. 5/5

Home Sweet Home instrumental - this is ok, just its not that good. 2/5

Keep Your Eye on the Money - Once again, this demo is better then the song. 5/5

Tommy's Drum piece - This is a rare track that has alot of value for true crue fans, 5/5

Along with a video for Home Sweet Home - that video is ok, but not good enough. 3/5

So over all if they had put the demo's on it instead if would have sounded alot better, it would have sounded more like Shout at the Devil. However they were in the studio for months doing this cd, and it was way too over glossed.

Forget about the singles!.......2006-09-04

Besides Smokin' and Home Sweet Home, I think this Crue album rocks....Use it or Lose it, Louder than Hell, Fight for your Rights, Tonight, etc. Who really cares what trend was goin on....forget the fashion for a minute and listen to the tunes.
Im into much heavier stuff these days, but I always dug the Crue's brand of rock and roll, and this one jams......they just need to re-release it without the above mentioned Home..and Smokin.

one of my favorite Motley Crue Albums, i bought this when it first came out and played it so much that i wore it out. i really recommend this to anyone new to crue :)

this is the 2nd worst example of a band merely following a trend that they themselves had initiated; instead of the stuff coming out of themselves, they wind up imitating themselves, imitating the people that had imitated them in the first place. on their 1st and best album, "Too Fast for Love" mot cru didn't know what they were doing: punk,pop,metal, all of the above. This made it raw, edgy, unformulaic. As their direction became more focused with the 2nd album, "Shout at the Devil", they basically invented glam metal, or at least were in on the ground floor. It came from within, unpremeditated. But then with "Theater of Pain", it's like they were consciously saying "hey, let's be glam metal", and ended up looking like a parody of themselves, imitating their imitators, like Ratt or Cinderella or whatever. And the songwriting was strictly mediocre. They did return to form somewhat with grls x3 and dr. flgd.

Just in case you're wondering, the all-time worst instance of this syndrome is the once-mighty Metallica's unlistenable "St Anger", where they sound like they're copying the nu-metal/rap-metal folks that had learned everything they knew from Metallica in the first place.

Motley Crue's venture into the mid 1980s. Gone for all intents and purposes is the heavy brash sound which populated SATD and TFFL. You get Motley Glam. Its a sad joke compared to the two prior releases.

There are people who love this album. I am not one of them. The music loses the edge, power and feracity of earlier output.

For all intents and purposes the Motley Crue of legend disappeared sometime between 1984 and 1985. Replaced by a drugged out band resorting to cliched MTV ballads, lame lyrics and the occasional cheesy cover. From here they never recover the greatness they flashed in the early years.

Thinking about buying this? Don't. Shout at the Devil or Too Fast for Love are THE albums to buy. After this fughetabout unless you like cheesy cliche 1980s rock.

first off let me say i don't care for the re-masters. cuase all the same extra songs that are on all the re-master of all the older motley cd's are the same ones you would find on their box bet "motley crue: music to crash your car too vol. 1 & 2" that being said, if i was you, i'd try to find the 1dt pressing of the old motley cd's, which are Elektra Records. not Moltey/hip-O records that u see now, and put decade of decadence 81-91 back out, that was their first grestest hits cd, which now day is out-of- print, what the F*** is up with that, that had songs on it like "rock n roll junkie" a diffent version of "livewire" "piece of your action" and a live version of "kickstart my heart" on it.

A good, if not great album.......2005-11-05

With the release of "Shout at the Devil," (1983) Motley Crue broke through and achieved their first taste of commercial success. Proving to be no one-hit-wonder, two years later, the Crue released "Theatre of Pain," (1985) which solidified their position as one of rock's premier acts.

For their third album, Motley Crue fully embraced the glam image that was popular at the time.

"Theatre of Pain" proved to be a huge commercial success, entering the top ten and going on to sell four million copies. "Home Sweet Home" and a cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room" enjoyed massive MTV airplay. With "Theatre of Pain" the Crue greatly expanded their audience and established themselves as one of the most popular metal bands of the 1980s.

Truth be told, "Theatre of Pain" is not the Crue's best work. In fact, it's the weakest album from their 80s output. It doesn't "suck," the way some fans (even Vince Neil) claim it does. It just doesn't measure up when compared to the classic first two albums "Too Fast for Love" (1982) and "Shout at the Devil" or the great, but not as great follow-up albums "Girls, Girls, Girls," (1987) and "Dr. Feelgood (1989).

The flaws of "Theatre of Pain" are that the band's performance was half-baked and the songwriting generally wasn't up-to-par with the Crue's standard.

Having suddenly found huge commercial success with "Shout at the Devil," the band indulged in heavy partying. While some artists music is enhanced by excess drugs and alcohol, (Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, the Doors) this was not to be the case with the Crue. While the band's performance on "Theatre of Pain" is adequate, is just isn't of the same caliber as it had on the band's first two albums. The band sounds sloppy and not as cohesive. Vince Neil (vocals) sounds slurred and generally wasted. Nikki Sixx, (bass) Mick Mars (guitar) and Tommy Lee (drums) give an adequate, if not underwhelming performance.

The bluesy mid-tempo "City Boy Blues" is good and effective, if not a little generic. Although a huge hit, the cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room" is really bad, really cheesy, and not the Crue's finest hour. They just sound like they're posing, trying too hard to be baddass, and with such a bubblegum song. They might-as-well have covered "Bad boy Leroy Brown." The album picks up some momentum with the good, but not great, up-tempo "Keep your eye on the money." The album's centerpiece, and one of the Crue's biggest hits "Home Sweet Home" is certainly one of the band's best songs. I'd even argue that it is the greatest power balled of the 1980s. It is the album's shinning moment.

I actually like the second side of "Theatre of Pain" far better than the first. A lot of great songs were buried on the latter half of the album. The free-wheeling "Tonight (We Need a Lover)" has a great hook and killer solo. "Use it or lose it" is another underrated rocker in the same vein. Although not a hit, "Save our Souls," in this writers opinion, is the latter half of the album's best song. It has a certain looseness; a certain intoxicated half-hearted drunken resonance that works in its favor. The semi-acoustic "Raise Your Hands to Rock" is effective and memorable. The closing "Fight for Your Right" sounds like a by-the-numbers 80s rocker, and while it isn't awful, it isn't particularly memorable either.

The remastered addition contains several demos of the songs. They show the songs as works-in-progress and should be of interest to fans of the band.

While "Theatre of Pain" certainly isn't a masterpiece, and has its flaws, it's still a decent album. "Home Sweet Home" and the lost gems on the second side make it an above-average 80s metal album.

Breakthrough from the Crue.......2005-06-01

Theatre Of Pain (1985.) Motley Crue's third album.

Motley Crue came onto the heavy metal scene early in the eighties, with their own breed of metal that fused glam with straight-up hard rock. This style was one of the most unique in eighties metal - The group wasn't a poppy glam metal act like Poison, nor were they a thrash band like Metallica. Despite their unique sound, their first album, Too Fast For Love, didn't really bring them any popularity. Their second album, Shout At The Devil, faired slightly better but still didn't really get them a big enough audience. The group released their third album in 1985. Read on for my review.

Although this is far from being the best Crue album, the fact of the matter is that this is the one that brought them into the eighties mainstream. The band's instantaneous rise in popularity was due in no small part to the success of the Brownsville Station cover, Smokin' In The Boys Room. The group's reinvention of an old favorite was done very well, and became their first big-time charting hit (Shout At The Devil had several popular songs, but none as popular as this one - at the time of release, anyway.) Another big hit for the group that came from this album was the classic power ballad, Home Sweet Home. The Crue isn't a band you'd expect to use the piano in their songs, but they do it here, and create one of the finest power ballads ever penned. The excellence continues through the rest of the album, with the band shelling out a number of excellent rockers. However, as it has often been said, this album sort of lacks elements that the previous two albums had. While every song on here is good, it sounds too much like the band is trying to sound like other eighties metal bands. Despite this, it's still a strong album through and through, and it didn't disappoint me at all. Four out of five stars.

Most of Motley Crue's albums were remastered and reissued in the Crucial Crue remasters series, which feature remastered sound, expanded liner notes, and even some bonus tracks! The bonus tracks include demos, alternative versions of songs, and even some songs that just plain never saw the light of day! However, if you're just starting a Crue collection, you may want to get the Music To Crash Your Car To, Vol 1 box set. It features the band's first four albums and the respective bonus tracks - plus some bonuses not available outside the box. But if you'd rather just buy albums outside the box, get the Crucial Crue ones.

Theatre Of Pain is NOT Motlet Crue's best album, but even one of Motley Crue's less-revered efforts is better than the good albums that most bands put out. Take my advice - if you're new to the Crue, start with the Shout At The Devil album, or the Dr. Feelgood album. Theatre is a great album, but it may give you the wrong idea about the band. Listen to some of the band's better-known works before you explore this one.

Classic Crue.......2002-08-19

I bought this when albums were still being sold. I listened to this every day then all my albums got stolen. I just recently started getting all the albums I had, but in CDs. This is classic crue.

Christian Death is music born.......2006-01-04

This album has so much life in it that it will make you want more from this great band!!!! You will crave this album and find your self putting it on again and again. You will find that everyone who catches a slight hint of this sound will want it too!!!!
This break through record is still fresh. This album is harmonically pleasing and well regarded as a musical masterpiece of epic proportion.

Great classic album...........2005-11-22

This is one of the few albums that I own that I can listen to again and again without growing bored by it.The music is innovative and the lyrics intense.This is far better than his latter work which is haphazard at best. If you are interested in listening to some Rozz Williams get this album before you buy anything else that he did.This is what deathrock/goth is all about.

At moments good, it loses interest quickly........2005-10-03

When I bought this album, I took it home and only had a few moments to listen to the first three songs. I liked them enough so I ripped the album onto my computer playlist and left it at that.

I forgot about it from then on, only hearing various songs during random playing, which in general I either liked or didn't mind.

Recently I decided to listen to the album all the way through, and I was amazed by how poor it works out afterall. The lyrics are okay, sometimes becoming very interesting, but the music and style of singing quickly become repetitive. I found it very difficult not to tune it out after two or three songs, and whenever I tuned in I would start to get annoyed by the lead singer's voice. It's interesting at first, irritating in time, and abrasive by the end.

This album is not something I can really imagine handling all the way through for any good reason. It seems to work best broken up and randomized, at moments popping up onto the playlist and then going away for a while. If you have a rather large collection of music and an iPod or computer playlist handy, hey, knock yourself out. If you expect to listen to this thing all the way through, you're going to either be bored or irritated.

A Pure Gothic Classic.......2005-06-14

This is a wonderful album. I remembering first listening to this album over nearly 20 years ago. Once Rozz departed I sort of lost interest in the band. However, when Rozz toured by himself and did all the classics from this first album, you can bet I was right there front and center. The place: Spanky's in Riverside California. Decades ago I was lucky enough to look at him eye to eye and gently place my hand behind his head as he sang songs from this album. A truly unique moment from a great goth icon. A Death-Rock/Goth Classic........2004-07-17

Rozz Williams,the singer for Christian Death was only 18 years old when this record was released. Rozz went on to release numerous other projects under various names. This album is a masterpiece from start to finish; haunting, lyrically rich, and dark. This 1982 release was "Goth" before the name became so overused. This is an album that will not disappoint the true Goth fan.

Motley Crue's 3rd album was the begining of the comercial rock movement of the 1980's. This album is my favorite because it set the trend for many of the L.A. glam bands that followed. It may not stand out by today's standards,nonetheless, it's still a great cd. The album contains the Motley classics "Smokin' in the Boys Room","Home,Sweet,Home" However,the real gems are the lesser known Crue tunes.Songs like "Raise Your Hands to Rock","Louder Than Hell" rock to an 80's rebellion beat!The demos are great also especially Tommy's drum solo absent on US cd
