Following Bobbaldwin.com, this underrated keyboardist returns with a breezy star-studded effort that's one of the best smooth-jazz albums of the year. He frames his tracks in the classic '70s contemporary jazz style of the Crusaders or Roy Ayers, while never losing the sonic quality of the quintessential '90s smooth-jazz sound. In addition, he has a solid grasp of how to mix in hip-hop grooves without overplaying his hand, except perhaps on the boy-group-like "Too Late," featuring vocalist Phil Perry. Baldwin's not shy about wearing his influences on his sleeves. He could fool many die-hard fans of ex-Crusader Joe Sample on the first two tracks, and obviously so on "Mr. Sample." His arrangement of Ayers's classic anthem "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" is superb, and features the composer on vibes. Marion Meadows on sax and Chieli Minucci on guitar also make solid contributions, but Baldwin is the prevailing and most inventive soloist here, as well as being an absolute magician with changing up grooves. The track "Neo-Soul" really defines the whole album, as this is a forward-looking musician repeating a cycle by mixing neo-soul and smooth jazz. --Mark Ruffin
Customer Reviews:
Magic hands-smooth groove!.......2005-09-26
This is another Bob Baldwin classic!...a must have for your collection of smooth jazz-neo soul artists! This album has a diverse mixture of innovative arrangements and the remake of "Everybody loves the sunshine" is worth buying the album by itself. The man is underrated in the smooth jazz world-he has magic hands on the keys and he is a legend in this day and time. My favorites are tracks # 1, #8, #9 and # 10. Buy it , absorb it and groove to it!We saw him at the Croton Jazz Festival unveil this masterpiece. (...). Then move on over to "Standing Tall" and get your degree in the smooth grooves of this amazing smooth jazz album. Bob doesn't disappoint-he enlightens!
This is the bomb.......2004-05-18
Bob Baldwin is a bad dude. I heard him on "The Wave" one day and decided to get his CD, and I love it. I recommend that everyone that likes comtemporary jazz to buy it. I gurantee you that you won't be disappointed.
New Listener, New Fan.......2003-12-07
I first heard Bob Baldwin while in a record store's listening booth and was totally captivated by Baldwin's artistry. This is truly an album you can listen to and never get tired of. The title track grabs your attention right away and you realize you are patting your feet and moving your head thoughout the song. From there you can literally take your pick: His rendition of Roy Ayers' "Everbody loves the Sunshine" with help from Will Downing and Roy Ayers himself is just delicious. The smooth but funky "See you in Miami" is the epitome of jazzy soul. The tribute to Sade "A New Day" is just plain tight! I literally can't select a favorite. His tribute to Joe Sample is right on. I can go on and on but if you want to hear real contemporary keyboards, this is a must get. Everyone should have this release in their collection.
Best Album Ever!!.......2003-04-07
I've been listening to Bob Baldwin for over fifteen (15) years. I also have two other albums including this latest one.He is by far, the jazz of jazzman. This album captivates from the heart of music lovers and the smooth groove of jazz contemporary.
For example, the song called "See You In Miami" is vintage Baldwin. Referring back to his early years as a young musician. I recommend this album to all music fans. Jazz or non-Jazz lovers.
Bob Baldwin Should Be More Well Known.......2002-11-20
About 10 years ago, I took a chance and ordered a Bob Baldwin CD from one of those music clubs. Ever since then I've been a huge fan of his. Everytime I hear his CD's it amazes me why he is not more well known and featured more than he is on so-called smooth jazz radio stations. Perhaps the reason is Bob's music is really not so smooth. If you are looking for elevator music, this is not the place to go. However, if you want a CD that keeps your toe tapping and really sounds great, then look no further.
One of Bob's moniker's is to re-make a song on each of his CD's and without fail, he takes it to another level. His re-dux of Everybody Love's The Sunshine (track 8) is outstanding...and it is about my 3rd favorite cut on the CD! Tracks 1,2,7 and 10 are some of the best stuff you'll hear anywhere.
If you want a CD that you will not tire of listening to AND where the music gets and keeps you moving, look no further. Buy this CD and you too will become a big fan.

The composers Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu might not be the names that first spring to mind when love songs are mentioned, yet this fascinating collection gives us a taste of what delights we have been missing. They range from seven Moravian folk songs, collected by Janácek at the turn of the century, to songs written by Martinu in the U.S. in 1942. There's also early Martinu--including songs he collected in Slovakia in 1920--plus the world-premiere recording of Songs for a Friend of My Country, a cycle he wrote in France in 1940 on his way to America. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work; most have much more to offer. Many are achingly lovely, especially those by Dvorák--including his Op. 2, a reworking of four songs from a cycle he had written almost 20 years earlier, and Love Songs, a revision of eight songs from the same cycle. "Good night, my darling," from his 1886 cycle In Folk Tone, is worth the price of this CD alone. Czech mezzo Magdalena Kozená, who put together the program, sings with pure, attractive tone. Graham Johnson is her excellent accompanist. --Richard Fawkes
Customer Reviews:
On the Subject of Intelligent and Sensitive Recitals.......2005-05-19
Combing the recorded literature to find CDs that showcase singers who not only own brilliant vocal gifts but who also possess the intelligence to program recordings of lesser known works in a sequence that makes for intelligent recitals, it is becoming more obvious that there are many singers who opt for purity of purpose rather than 'salesmanship' of careers in the PR arena. Magdalena Kozená is one of these gifted singers whose intelligence and sensitivity match her physical and vocal beauty.
LOVE SONGS is a tastefully selected panorama of lesser-known songs by Kozená's fellow countrymen (Czech) Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu. And while many of the Dvorák and Janácek songs have been occasionally heard in recitals, the Martinu "Songs for a Friend of My Country", an exquisitely beautiful work written in 1940, here receives its World Premiere recording. Kozená's voice is in prime condition for these songs and she is ably accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson. The special flavor of these Slavic emotions and songs has rarely been so well captured.
But over and above the beauty of Kozená's performance of these neglected masterpieces shines the glow of her sensitive programming. Recordings such as these are rare and should be included in the libraries of those who appreciate the lieder genre. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05
Lovely.......2004-03-25
This is a beautifully performed selection of Czech lieder. Kozena has a lovely voice and sings with precision and nicely modulated emotion. The accompanying pianist, Graham Johnston, is excellent. Despite the title, not all these songs are love or romantic songs but all are well worth hearing. The selection of songs is excellent. Different listeners will prefer different songs. For me, the highlight of this recording are the rarely heard Martinu songs, many of which exhibit the lyrical aspect of his compositional style. Recommended strongly.
A Beautiful Disc.......2002-01-06
This is simply a magnificent recording. I like it better every time I put it on. The voice is fresh, supple, and expressive. I even find myself trying to learn some of the Czech words (from the translation in the booklet) they sound so nice. Both Kozena and the brilliant piano contributions by Graham Johnson are faithfully caught on the recording. There is enough variety and contrast that one doesn't tire in the least (over the generous 67 minutes of playing time) of hearing these playful, sometimes poignant, songs. One of the best discs, in terms of programming, performance, and sound quality, of the past couple of years.
A stunning burst onto the world stage.......2001-12-17
Magdalena Kozena is suddenly known around the world, thanks to this stunning disc of 42 lieder from her Czech homeland. Most of the songs are short - some come in under a minute, the longest 3-4 minutes. Each is a little gem and many have never been recorded before.
Kozena's voice is sheer delight. She does have resonances in her voice which are reminiscent of her compatriot, Lucia Popp, but is certainly a mezzo - although she has chosen her repertoire well so we hear no strain at the top. Her low resonances are delightful and consistent with her head voice. To compare Kozena's voice to that of the late diva (Popp), it is more pure, more consistent in tone from top to bottom, and doesn't have so much of the `squeezey' quality which Popp used to great effect in evincing the passion of her characters. Kozena can empty her voice of vibrato or let it out rich and full, and uses all her vocal resources to great effect in contrasting the individual songs. She has astoundingly mature lieder-singer's technique for such a young singer.
This recording rightly won a Gramophone award this year. Kozena deserves all the accolades she receives for this - doubtless all listeners will develop their own favourites from these delightful miniatures.
Wonderful songs, and a singer with great potential.......2000-10-08
What a wonderful, carefully thought out CD! Kozena obviously revels in these rarely performed songs by Dvorak, Martinu, and Janacek, and Johnson accompanies with his usual ease and sensitivity. What a pity the piano is balanced distantly -- we hear little of Johnson's variety of touch and dynamics. As for Kozena, she is obviously an intelligent musician with a voice of great potential. It is qutie beautiful as it is, yet the colour is still rather pale. Yes, there is something of the late Lucia Popp's timbre, yet it has little of Popp's depth and range of colour. BBC Legends released a CD of Popp a year ago which includes three Dvorak songs also sung by Kozena. The differences are quite marked -- while Kozena's timbre and interpretation suggests a dreamy yet earnest youth, Popp brings out an autumnal glow and a sharp pain that pierces at least this listener's heart. Kozena has started a wonderful career. Only time will tell how her voice will develop. I do hope it goes in the direction of Popp's unique lyric timbre. No one could ever equal Popp (perhaps it's obvious by now that Popp is my favorite singer of all time), but perhaps Kozena will become something of Popp's heir, while still being her own person. I hope so. But her musicality is not in question. Let's keep our ears open!

Customer Reviews:
Standing Tall is the best of all.......2004-02-01
Kym Marsh's debut CD is great!!! Despite rumors of her just being dropped by record label after poor 3rd single sales, this album is one of my faves. This album charted at no.9 in the UK
Cry - 10/10
- First single. This is a great mid-tempo track is considered the greatest track on the album. The chorus is really catchy as violin strings give it a great effect. UK Charted no.2
Come on over - 9/10
- Uptempo no. and the 2nd single The acoustic is really catchy on this track but the lack of beat linking the chorus and verses slow the song down for a little bit. Charted UK no.10
Sentimental - FAVE
- 3rd single and my fave track on the album. This is really different from the two singles beforehand, it is more rocky. It starts off simple acoustic but then the rock sound kicks in at the bridge. UK Charted no.35
I think it's gonna rain today - 9/10
- This is a really husky song. Kym does little singing and is more talking. Is similar to the Kelly Clarkson track 'Beautiful Disaster'
After Goodbye - 9/10
- First ballad. This song is really epic and the guitar is brill! Kym's vocals are really strong and the song is strong throughout
Girl I used to be - 9/10
- This is a carbon copy of Cry. The acoustic is basically the same and the vocal beat is basically the same. Doesn't make it rubbish though, is very catchy
Standing Tall - 10/10
- This opens with an electric guitar and sets the pace for the rest of the album. This is really unique from the rest of the album as it's something that a rock/pop artist would do
Cross every river - 7/10
- If country music is your thing then this song is for you. In my opinion is bland but the song does have potential to be an amazing song
Glow - 8/10
- This is a Eurovision style song, good to start off with but I amen't keen on the chorus
Live Forever - 7/10
- On the same basis as Cross every river, if you like country pop then you'll like this
Shine on me - 10/10
- This is like an acoustic and slowe sounding version of Sentimental.
Because of you - 7/10
- This is just a simple acoustic song which makes it boring. Kym wrote this song about her kids, so her heart is in the right place
Here comes heaven - This is kinda country. This song is a grower, but you can tire of it too.
Tempted - 10/10
- One of my faves. Similar to another song but I can't put my finger on it. This is really catchy and the whole song has you hooked
Don't break me heart - 8/10
- A sickly ballad, but still good. Really impressive vocals
All in all Kym's sound is acoustic pop with a hint of rock and country. Fans of Natalie Imbruglia, Dido and The Corrs will love Kym

Joe Cocker Guest Vocals Give Unique Twist.. .......2005-01-25
...to patented Crusaders 80s' sound. "I'm So Glad I'm Standing Here Today" becomes a neo-gospel number with Cocker's gruff vocalisation punctuating the lyrics. "Luckenbach, Texas" finds Felder at his best sax playing. "Longest Night" is one of those infectuous grooves these dudes usually come up with and you find yourself humming along with its melody. The overall production and musicmanship are as smooth as they come: this CD will give you many hours of listening pleasure.

Album Description
The Front Porch Country Band was scheduled for a studio session on September 16, 2001, when tragedy struck the U.S. Shocked and saddened by the terrorist attacks, the band pulled together to express their love for America the only way they knew how - through beautiful music. America Standing Tall - The American Trilogy was recorded in a 36-hour marathon writing and recording session following September 11th, and was released on September 18th, exactly one week after the attacks.
The uplifting patriotic music soon hit radio airwaves across the U.S. and as far as Hawaii. An entire America Standing Tall concert series was built on the strength of the three songs, combined with more Original American Country from The Front Porch Country Band. The songs have reached Number One on MP3.com's WORLDWIDE charts in their categories. The album features beautiful vocal harmonies, soaring guitar solos, and bold instrumental accompaniment. "America Standing Tall" and "American Skies" are proud and patriotic, while "Echoes of Your Love" has been called one of the most beautiful soft and reflective songs about 9-11.

Johnny Jolin.......2003-03-15
Wow! What an awesome album, what a tribute to our fallen hereos.
The lead vocalist on American Standing Tall & Echoes of Your Love is an incredible singer. His voice is commanding and powerful on America standing tall and then touching soft and full of emotion and brillanty delivered on Echoes.I can't wait for more.
A Very Powerful CD.......2003-01-21
This is a really powerful album. You can tell it was recorded right after September 11th, the songs are very emotional. "Echoes Of Your Love" is a particularly good track that looks at the tragedy from the perspective of phone calls to loved ones.
A Salute To America's Heroes.......2003-01-21
When I first listened to The Front Porch Country Band's trilogy CD I was left speechless. The songs are definitely instant patriotic classics. This album is the perfect salute to our heroes!
Extremely Powerful Album.......2003-01-21
I saw The Front Porch Country Band perform the songs from this trilogy album at the band's concert in June 2002. I can't even begin to explain the surge of emotion I felt when I heard "American Skies" performed live for the first time. This album is a perfect example of the increased patriotism that has become part of our everyday lives.

Chick Webb, master of Swing.......2007-03-19
Chick Webb is to this day considered one of the two most influential drummers of the Swing Era (the other being his predecessor, Jo Jones). Webb's musical career was brief, but memorable. He fronted his own band by age 17 and played aggressive drums in spite of severe physical handicaps. Additionally, Webb gave teenaged Ella Fitzgerald her start, in 1936. Her Webb-backed waxings of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" and "Undeciced" became big hits.
Webb also introduced the world to what would become a jazz standard, "Stomping At The Savoy," a song written by his alto sax man, Edgar Sampson. As his orchestra's fame grew, unfortunately Webb's health rapidly deteriorated. The majority of tracks on STANDING TALL are from a May 10, 1939 radio broadcast, and are the last recordings Chick Webb would make. Six weeks after these performances aired, he would die, a victim of tuberculosis-- Webb was only 30.
Audio quality of these dozen sides is a bit limited-- mostly midrange. Distortion's not too bad and surface imperfections are minimal. CD includes a three-page Webb bio.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 40:25
Thid is a RARE find!.......2001-02-19
If you can ignore the poor sound quality of 1939, this is a great, rare live recording of the great band led by one of the great drummers of the day - Chick Webb! One of the early swing pioneers and king of the Savoy Ballroom for many years, these recordings let us have a breif hearing of his band in live performance to prove he swung even greater live than on the studio 78's. This CD is from 1939, less than 2 months before his death in June, 1939, but he still drove the band relentlessly. An added bonus is hearing a young Ella Fitzgerald in the infantcy of her fabulous career. Hearing this CD, even to the unassociated listner, will make your feet tap and give you a breif glimpse into the great world of swing bands.
