Customer Reviews:
A whole lot of memories.......2007-05-07
I had this 3 record album back in college in the early 80's. This was one of the standards for our dorm parties. I lost the third record. I have been searching for the CD for years. I love Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's music and this one is classic.
Dirt, Silver and Very Gold.......2007-01-29
Awesome album and a must for anyone into the bluegrass/country genre but likes a little rock and creative orchestration thrown in. Great covers and signs of better times--who would dare cover "House at Pooh Corner" these days? Tons of great music in this double album. Put it on, kick back and you'll be hummin' and singin' along before you know it.
Last of the good albums.......2007-01-06
This is one album I have in vinyl, on tape, and now on cd. This has the good songs, the memories and the good times. After this, I lost interest in most of what the Dirt Band was performing. Either I grew up or they changed or just maybe, both.
NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND DIRT SILVER & GOLD.......2006-11-10
Dirt Silver & Gold is a great CD. I owned a copy of the original two album set. The CD has been remixed and sounds great. The CD contains a great collection of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands best songs. I highly reccomend this CD to all Nitty Gritty fans.
Outstanding.......2006-05-08
Nothing will ever replace the fold-out cover and enclosed book and poster of the original vinyl packaging, but the songs...and the sound. It's all here. And it's outstanding.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
One of Neil Young's softest and most striking albums in ages, Silver & Gold recaptures the peacefulness of Comes a Time and Harvest Moon. At one point ("Buffalo Springfield Again"), Young even goes so far as to imagine the reunion of the band he left in order to pursue a solo career. It's a moment that almost overtakes Young's songs of husbandly devotion in sheer sweetness. --Rickey Wright
Amazon.com
Once prone to straying all over the map, Neil Young has contented himself of late alternating between country squire and convulsive rocker. Silver & Gold is an exquisite addition to Young's pastoral offerings. Envisioned as the singer's first totally solo album, the 10-song set was reconceived and resequenced over the course of three years. Indeed, the four Young songs on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's problematic Looking Forward were taken from an earlier version of Silver & Gold, backing tracks and all. What's left is a spare, guileless assortment of tunes that owes a thematic and sonic debt to After the Gold Rush. The touchingly nostalgic "Daddy Went Walkin'" and "Red Sun" conjure up images of childhood contentment; Young's parents divorced in his youth, but here they're sweethearts. Love is on Young's mind in the idyllic title track, "Horseshoe Man," and "Razor Love." He reflects on his early musical career with the artless but oddly suitable "Buffalo Springfield Again." Then he pulls it all together with the cryptic closer, "Without Wings." "I'm pickin' somethin' up / I'm lettin' somethin' go," he intones. And one can only reflect on how appropriate it is that Young dropped a song called "Looking Forward" from his latest journey through the past. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Watershed moment for our favorite artist.......2005-10-19
Well, I just listened to Prairie Wind again, another great album which reminds me of Silver and Gold, and I cant say enough about how this great man has helped to guide me and help me find insight into my own life through his heartfealt albums. There are different sides to Neil Young, some best appreciate his hard rock anthems (This Note's For You, Southern Pacific, Like a Hurricane) and some the solopsistic and introveted works, (such as Campaigner, Last trip to Tulsa and Deep Forbidden Lake). But Neil can surprise us with works that can go either way, like a candle lit at both ends, like his acoustic and electric versions of "The Losing End". This album is filled with songs like that, which would be equally at home in either genre. Many reviewers agree that "Distant Camera" is one of the most beautiful songs on the album, a sort of Coda to "Old Man" with a familiar acousitic guitar riff as it's signature. But the album is a total work that bounds from "feel good" type anthems celebrating days with the Buffalo Springfield into the maturity of Neil Young as the seasoned artist and father: "Without Rings", a song for his son Ben, always brings me to tears, and acheives what he tried to do so hard in attempts like "Transformer Man". I truly wish that Neil Young would command the respect of his contemporaries; if there is a postumous Travelling Wilburys" being composed in another dimension with folks like Jerry Garcia added to the Harrison/Orbison mix, they are truly envious and anxious for Neil to join in (but we would rather have him here as long as we can keep him with us).
ol' dusty.......2005-10-18
yeah that Dusty Springfield Again, that one grooves, don't it?
I am a die-hard, an On the Beach-er and all that, but I like a bit of mellowed out Neil as much as the next guy. I love it.
Everything that Prairie Wind Is Not.......2005-10-03
Go read all of the reviews of Prairie Wind and then buy this record instead. All of the superlatives applied by all of the critics to Prairie Wind are deserved instead by this collection of songs. They are simple, heart felt, and beautiful. Their production is not overdone or underdone - its just right. Everything you expect from one man, one guitar and one harmonica is here on Silver & Gold. This, not Prairie Wind, is Neil's acoustic gem for the 21st century (so far). Five stars easy.

As an overview of one of the trailblazing bands of the San Francisco sound, this two-disc assortment of unreleased studio and performance oddities takes a backseat to another two-disc collection, Sons of Mercury, a 1991 best-of retrospective from Rhino. That said, Lost Silver and Gold is of definite interest to devotees of the band and Bay Area psychedelia in general, as well as younger jam-band fans interested in delving deeper into '60s rock than the Grateful Dead. Quicksilver's foundation was the tandem guitar attack of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan, a duo capable of consistently inventive (if occasionally long-winded) improvisation. (Greg Elmore and bassist David Freiberg rounded out the crucial QMS lineup.) Lost Silver and Gold supplements the lengthy live opening disc with a briefer set of unreleased demos, rarities, and soundtrack recordings that illustrate the group's strengths (terrific interplay) and weaknesses (shaky vocals). --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Huh wha?.......2005-12-24
Once upon a time there was a City called San Francisco
and a decade called the sixties.
Some bands based themselves in that city
and some were better, more driven, more creative,
and more controversial than others.
This recording is a chronicle of one of those bands that was and wasn't, respectively.
All right,
they were OK on a good night, but this recording hardly qualifies as one of those. Besides,
the fidelity is utterly atrocious:
so bad as to be unworthy of transcription into the CD format.
And then there's the "Gold and Silver" with no Cipollina:
instead some dude's WHISTLING the lead.
Huh wha?
What WAS "Collector's Coice Music" THINKING when they released this scraping from the soft underbelly of 1960s rejects?
some second thoughts-the more I listen the more I like it.......2004-06-15
Earlier, I wrote that the live disc was a minor disappointment. I still believe that. But, the more I listen to the live disc, the more I like it. As you listen to it repeatedly, your mind tends to ignore the sound quality problems and tends to blank out during the bad minutes, like the first two tracks. You then focus on the truly great moments. With your computer and good sound editing software, you could create a fairly nice CD of 30 to 40 minutes of great jamming music. You might even be able to correct some of the sound problems.
A minor disappointment-Get Happy Trails instead.......2004-06-05
On the surface you would think this would be a great album. 78 minutes of Quicksilver live from 1968. Unfortunately, it does not live up to expectations. The sound quality is bad and the performance is not great.
This is a two disc set from when Quicksilver was just getting started, recorded in 1967 and 1968. The first disc is a 78 minute concert from 1968. The second disc is studio outtakes from 67 and 68. It is around 50 minutes long. The group was going through radical changes at the time. They were more of a pop/folk psychodelic band until the lead, Dino Valenti went to jail on drug charges. The group became more of a jam band after that.
The live album finds the group just evolving their new sound. It shows in the performance. It is rough and raw. The group trips over each other. The vocals on many of the songs are bad. The harmonies are not harmonious. They even forget the some of the lyrics on Who Do You Love. There are some wonderful moments, but there are very few songs that are good throughout. You can hear how much they will improve if you listen the 1969 live album, Happy Trails.
The sound quality is poor. There is no dynamic range. The high end is way up front. The sound is fuzzy and distorted. That added to the rough performance makes this a difficult CD to listen to. If the sound quality were a little bit better the rough performance may be a little more enjoyable.
The second CD is more interesting. The sound quality is better, but not great, especially considering these are studio tracks. There is a loud hiss through some of the tracks. Almost all tracks contain very good performances. The last two tracks are silly thow-away songs.
I would strongly recommend getting the first album and Happy Trails instead of this one. Happy Trails is a wonderful live album with amazing performances and great sound quality. Lost Silver And Gold is just practice sessions for those 2 albums.
If you like Quicksilver's jamming, then you should check out the Welsh group, Man. Man and John Chipolina from Quicksilver actually collaborated. When Chipolina died, Man wrote Sons of Mercury in his honor. On a live album, Deke Leonard of Man says, why does have to be the good that die, why couldn't it have been Phil Collins instead. Some good Man albums to check out include, Back Into the Future, 1999 Tour Party and Live at the Rainbow.
The Greatest Jam-Band Of All Time.......2003-11-12
I've heard many people say that The Allman Brothers Band and Cream are the greatest jam-bands of all time. Well, those people better listen long and hard to the live disc of this compilation. Simply put - Quicksilver Messenger Service were the undisputed masters of improvisational jams. Better than The Allman Brothers Band and better than Cream. Remember where you heard that.
It would be useless for me to try describing these songs in words, because they're so amazing that it would take forever to go into details about them. Suffice it to say that "Smokestack Lightning", "The Fool", "Who Do You Love", "Gold And Silver" and "Mona" simply define the word 'jam'. Gary Duncan is a fantastic rhythm guitarist and his POWERFUL blues vocals make Howlin' Wolf sound like a pansy. The rhythm section of David Freiberg (bass) and Greg Elmore (drums) is solid all the way through, providing a great backbone for the music. And I've saved the best for last - on lead guitar is the uncanny John Cipollina. Definitely one of the top five greatest players of all time, Cipollina hits notes that you just have to hear to believe. He's beyond comprehension, and he is second only to Eric Clapton in terms of raw intensity. Listen to him wail on "Smokestack Lightning", "The Fool" or "Gold And Silver" and prepare to be blown away. The first time I heard those tunes, I could do nothing but shake my head in disbelief as John proceeded to astound me with his unearthly intensity. In a nutshell - THE GUY IS UNBELIEVABLE.
The second disc is comprised of studio rarities (outtakes, demos and alternate versions of official tunes), and together with the mind-blowing live disc, this is one compilation that jam fans will NOT want to miss.
So listen to it. Play it loud. I'll be right here, waiting to say "I told you so".

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!
"Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07
When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Product Description
This is Blue October's third album, building on this British synthpop band's strong reputation for smooth, melodic electronic pop music. The light, airy vocals glide with emotion over the bouncing synthesizer patterns and pulsing beats, with one memorable song after another. The album includes three bonus remixes, all rhythmically enhanced for club play.
Customer Reviews:
Blue October, smooth silky synth.......2006-04-19
I see that somebody who posted a review is writing only because they were confused between Blue October bands. Hmm, I doubt they listened to the music by this, the original Blue October, before they posted a review.
It should be noted that Blue October from the UK had been releasing CD's before the Texas rock band had poked their heads out yet. The album "Incoming" was Blue October's debut release (and still my personal favorite) and was released in 1996, before the rock band was around. "One Day Silver, One Day Gold" is the 3rd album. Also, the comment saying "this kind of music has been done before" is a little bit strange, coming from a fan of a rock band who plays the same old rock sound that has been done in America for the last few decades, as if THAT approach is particularly unique.
Anyway, I'm not hear to argue, but would recommend posting reviews about the bands that are pertinent to your own tastes and interests. If you're a fan of melodic, smooth, electronic pop music, this is right up your ally. If you're looking for a different Blue October that plays typical rock music, then I wouldn't expect you to like this, the original Blue October. Then again, if you're just a fan of good music, no matter what the style, I bet you'll enjoy giving this a listen.
please change your name!!.......2006-01-20
we all know who the real Blue October is and this music from the Blue(UK), is just more 80's, Erasure type music, that's been done over and over. No originality what's so ever. Nice try!!
what happened.......2005-10-30
Pure cheese. What happened this album isnt anywhere near the other albums by them. If youre thinking of buying blue october. Dont buy this one. Buy incoming thats there best. I still hope they come back on there next album.

A refreshing voice.......2003-07-19
Ms. Lynch has a very refreshing voice and this album is one of her best endeavors. I recommend this album to any bluegrass as well as country music fans. I know you will enjoy it. Hope to see more of her talent in the future.

Uplifting music from the queen of bluegrass.......2003-03-08
From her early eighties album as lead singer of the Front porch string band, Claire has always been my favorite bluegrass singer, though Rhonda Vincent, Alison Krauss and Lynn Morris are all brilliant.
Claire's voice is similar to Emmylou's in many ways. This is no bad thing and in any case the music they record is quite different. Emmylou's only bluegrass album, Roses in the snow, is not like any of Claire's albums.
Claire and her musicians (including other members of the Front porch string band) stay close to the traditions of the music. The credits show that drums are used on several tracks, but you don't really notice them.
If wishes were horses is a very fast song that gets the album off to a great start, but although the pace of the music drops after that, the quality doesn't. There are occasional moments of sadness in this album, particularly Out among the stars, but most of the songs are uplifting and cheerful.
Claire co-wrote four of the songs - Silver and gold, Sweetheart darling of mine, Death angel and Out among the stars, demonstrating that she can write songs as well as sing. This might just be Claire's best album, but I enjoy all of them enormously. If you enjoy bluegrass music, you will surely enjoy Claire's music.
Silver and Gold--mostly gold.......2000-05-31
This album is stunningly unique and breaks through the traditional Genre boundaries. There is a great swing dance tune and "Death Angel" transcends the deepest religious music. Even with such diversity, the album hangs together perfectly with no weak tunes. I was so delighted with this album that I bought "Moonlighter" and "Friends for all Time" also. These were very disappointing by comparison
Hats off to Claire and Front Porch for a winner !.......1999-08-23
Claire Lynch's Silver & Gold is just about my favourite bluegrass album. The songs are catchy, instantly hummable and Claire's voice is superb, but the best thing is the playing of the Front Porch Band. They're awesome, either wonderfully melodic as individual soloists (listen to that fantastic guitar) or tremendously assured and dynamic as a unit. Fresh too, I'm almost sick of hearing the obligatory sessions players (Jerry Douglas etc) on every album. Each song is great, my current favourites are "Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring", "Hitchcock Railway" and "Safe Haven". Claire is a talented writer as well as interpreter. Can't wait for more CL&FP music.
Eloquent writing,angelic vocals!.......1999-01-25
Claire is the "real deal". All the rest just copy! I like Alison but, I LOVE Claire. She is a well kept secret. Shame, shame.

At last! Maud Powell's musicianship available again.......2002-01-03
This is a reissue of "The Art of Maud Powell, a 'Victor Immortal' - complete recordings 1904-1917" prepared by the Maud Powell Foundation (Arlington, VA) in 1989. The guiding spirit behind that foundation, and project director of this collection, is Powell's biographer Karen A. Shaffer.
These three CDs were available only from the Maud Powell Foundation. I managed to get volume 3 several years ago after hearing all three discs from a library, but volume 2 has not been available. So, I've waited for volumes 1 and 2 hoping they'd come back "someday." Well, here they are, and Naxos has also released volume 3 according to their January 2 2002 newsletter.
Maud Powell (1867-1920) was in 1904 the first solo instrumentalist to record for Victor's new celebrity artist series on their Red Seal label. Their promotional materials told us to "Listen to Maud Powell's violin...if you want to find out how much can be got out of a fiddle, go--listen to--Maud Powell." They were right.
Powell's performances are the type of playing that may bring tears to your eyes, going straight to the heart and soul of the music and resonating with whatever you find inside yourself. She starts with a remarkably intense tone and naturally easy phrasing, then adds a tastefully varied vibrato and portamento (as vocally-inspired ornaments to heighten the expressivity). She varies her intonation according to the keys and the directions of the phrases, as her younger contemporary Pablo Casals did on the cello. It is extraordinary, like the best singer one can imagine but going beyond words. It is the kind of performance where it doesn't even matter what music she's playing...classical bon-bons, excerpts, folk songs, whatever. The music becomes a living thing in performances this good: breathing and moving and dancing right in front of you, and commanding your attention. It will get to you and you will feel it. What more needs to be said?
Bravo to Naxos for making these recordings available. The sound is pretty good, too, considering that the recordings were made before the availability of electric microphones. I hardly notice the background noise of the record since the performances are so directly engaging. These discs would be a "must-have" even at three or four times the price that Naxos is asking for them....

On Vanessa Williams' second Christmas disc, she proves once and for all she's just not just a glamorous dishonored beauty queen. Over the course of her seven studio albums, she has grown into a strong, nuanced singer, with an unerring eye for a good song. She continues the trend on Silver & Gold, which is the first in a series of thematic holiday albums she has planned over the next few years. The singer eschews tired, overworked Yuletide chestnuts, and instead roasts an entirely new batch, including the title song which in the perfect blend of wistfulness and strength, while the island rhythms of "Mary's Little Boy" elevates the bar on seasonal music, and her coy, saucy remake of the Carpenters' "Winter Weather," deserves to be a retro classic. When Williams does tackle a holiday standard, she does it with a fresh eye and voice, like her while her jazzy delicate duet with r&b heartthrob Brian McKnight: it's so sublime it lingers long after the last note has been sounded. Outstanding! --Jaan Uhelszki
Album Description
Throughout her illustrious career Vanessa Williams maintained a reputation as one of the most respected and multifaceted entertainers into the world amassing accomplishments and accolades one after another. She has conquered the musical charts, Broadway, music videos, television and motion pictures. Now Vanessa fans can catch spirit of the holidays with her new release, Silver and Gold, an intimate collection of Holiday favorites and original compositions. Silver and Gold features the single of the same name and a stirring rendition of Joy to the World featuring Brian McKnight.
Customer Reviews:
One of my Absolute Favorites for the Holidays.......2007-01-04
I have to preface this by saying that I'm a huge Vanessa Williams' fan, as I think her voice is very clear and true. I own both this CD and her 1st Christmas CD, Star Bright, and really enjoy both of them. The one thing I like about this CD is that she doesn't just have the 'same old, same old' Christmas songs that you end up hearing over and over. The title track, Silver and Gold is really beautiful and different, and The Holly and the Ivy is a welcome addition and a song you just don't hear very often from other artists. Rise Up Shepherd is a terrific gospel-inspired song, and December Lullaby is wonderful, featuring her daughter. Vanessa still does include some of the traditional,(her Mary's Boy Child/O Holy Night brings tears to my eyes) and she does a very good rendition of the Carpenter favorite, Merry Christmas Darling. Amazon had this for $3.97 and I bought several as gifts this year and everyone that has listened to it has really loved it.
If you're just looking for all the traditional songs, chances are you won't like this, but if you're looking for something a little new and different by a singer with an amazing voice, you won't be disappointed!!
24K Silver and Gold.......2006-12-21
I already have her previous Christmas album which I've enjoyed every year since it came out: 'Star Bright'. I had not been paying attention and therefore missed out on this musical treat for the past two years, only finding it quite by accident in November 2006. Like some other reviewers, my favorite on the album is 'The Holly and the Ivy', with 'Silver and Gold' being the best rendition since the master, Burl Ives, made it an annual Christmas tradition.
Contrary to some other reviewers, I thought that 'Joy to the World' detracted from an otherwise fluid, relaxing experience. It's just a bit too frenetic for my taste.
Still a 5-star album, by any measure. Heck, just the cover shot is worth the price. A very beautiful lady in every way.
"Simply Amazing".......2006-12-20
Quite simply this is the best holiday CD ever made.
Every song is a treasure. You can't help but feel the
"Joy" of Christmas when you hear Vanessa and Brian sing
"Joy to the World". "The Holly and the Ivy" will capture
your Christmas spirit with its intriguing melodies. But
the best track has to be "December Lullaby" which you will
keep in your head for a long time. Vanessa Williams proves
once and for all that she is one of the best artists we have
today. Enjoy every track!!
Best Holiday Album Owned.......2005-03-19
This Holiday album was a real treat. This album had such a relaxing jazzy feel to it throughout. "December Lullaby" is a spunky upbeat song featuring her four year old daughter Sasha.
"Merry Christmas, Darling" a dedication to Rick Fox. This song, kind of gives you an insight of how Vanessa or anyone feel when they have that special someone missing for the Holidays.
Ossie Davis is also featuring on this album in a reading of Langston Hughes "I Dream a World". This album is definitely a great Holiday album and the best Holiday Album I own.
VANESSA HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!.......2005-01-22
One lonely night I sat watching TV and happened to see a beauty like none else on stage soulfully rendering the classic"The Drummer boy". I was entralled. Vanessa Williams performance on A&E live by request was simply fabulous. I immediately bought the album and Iwas not disappointed. Holly and the Ivy is a classic. Well done and special appreciation to the guy on the flute and guitar. My favorite track? "Rise up Shepard" this is gospel in the making! What's a better way to welcome the lord Jesus Christ into our hearts than to stand and sing our hearts out to him and follow when the time be. Vanessa thank you for recording such a beautiful album.
