Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars There are many lackluster compilations from the 70s. This is not one of them. .......2006-07-29

There are scores of compilations of 1970s "rock" available, but in most of them, listeners have to skip and wade through track after track of horrific Disco or trashy pop to find something that even rocks a little bit. How many rockers want to buy a compilation full of Disco pop one-hit-wonders just to get to that mediocre third-generation mix of Mississippi Queen? This set, however, is different. At this price for a three disc set, it seems almost tolerable to have one album's worth of good solid rock mixed in with Disco One-Hit-Wonder pap. But this set is not like that. First, all the tracks are being published by the original label, and the label has put together good quality masterings. Second, most of these tracks ROCK! This is the real stuff. You won't find too much garbagy discofied pap here. You will find classics such as BOC's Don't Fear The Reaper and Ian Hunter's Once Bitten Twice Shy, but you will also find the proto punk of Iggy and the Stooges, Molly Hatchet's air-guitar inducing Whiskey Man, and a good copy of Mountain's Mississippi Queen amongst other lesser known tracks such as Pacific Gas And Electric's Are You Ready which, while predominantly an R&B track, comes crashing through the speakers with some of the most intense guitar lines you'll hear. If you remember the rock of the 70s or if you want a brief lesson of what REAL rock was like in the 70s, give this one a try.
No, I generally do not advertise things for free, but I rarely get so pleasantly surprised as I did when I found a compilation which just plain doesn't suck.

5 out of 5 stars what a trip!!!.......2005-07-21

man, when i first saw this little compilation i thought to myself and i quote "i've gotta have this!!!", this box set is very complete, it has groups that are known, and groups that i had never heard before (frank marino, lake) and believe me they rock!!!
so if you're looking for something different and refreshing, then don't hesitate and get this box set, it has a little bit of everything and the sound cuality is great!!!!
viva jibaro!!!!!

    2 out of 5 stars Only 2 good songs.......2000-06-25

Not the bestcompilation cd....personally I got it only for "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum and "Dancing In The Moonlight" by King Harvest. Other than that, the songs left me flat. There were plenty of other 70's classics they could have picked to round out this cd, but I wonder why they settled on the other fairly uninteresting sings. My advice, if there is a particular song you are loonking for, then get this cd, otherwise, look for your song of choice o another compilation album.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Classics...but..........2007-05-18

this is good, and for the most part, what I expected. There is at least one cover (the band covered itself, I think) that I wasn't expecting...but overall, just fine.

4 out of 5 stars Not the original songs, but interesting in a way.......2006-02-06

First of all, this disc is not the original songs, but they are done by atleast the orginal singer of the band. A couple of these re-versions are awful. "Ballroom Blitz" is horrendous. "Falling In Love Again" and "No Matter What" are also equally deplorable. But then there is the interesting factor. 30 years later, Brewer and Shipley do a better "Toke" than the first time. "Imaginary Lover" by the original ARS absolutely smokes. George McCrae still hits the high notes in "Rock Your Baby". Andrew Gold sounds like he just got out of a 1979 studio session. Tony Burrows of White Plains does a Vegas version of "My Baby Loves Lovin'" as does Rob Grille of the Grass Roots on "Sooner or Later". Paper Lace sounds good, except for the squeaky keyboard effect on "Billy Don't Be A Hero". Surprising is Paul Revere's smooth "Indian Reservation" and Heatwave's perfectly executed "Boogie Nights". Another great vocal performance here is from Walter Egan on "Magnet and Steel". Rick Derringer also re-makes his trademark "Hootchie Koo" with as much pinnache as 1972. There are a couple of original songs; "The Rapper" by The Jaggerz and Leo Sayer's live version of "Long Tall Glasses". The CD closes down with a fired up Ozark Mountain Daredevils, who haven't lost a lick and sing their signiture tune "If You Wanna Get To Heaven" with more punch than the original.

All and all, it's hard to recommend these "re-make" CD's. But it's interesting to see if the artists can pull it off. Most of them on this disc do a reasonable job. And I like hearing these old guys sing. For $6 or so, why not? You get 70 minutes of music mastered in 24/96 high resolution technology. Give it a spin.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars 15 original Artists sing out of 21 titles listed!.......2006-10-01

I learned a lesson on these "older" compilations: Listen to all available audio 1st, before buying. It sounds like there are only 15 original artists singing on this CD. 2 are questionable. It's a good mix of long lost songs, so consider the price in your decision. The "knock-offs" are mostly pretty bad!

        1 out of 5 stars Original Artists?.......2006-08-02

Several of the songs on this CD are "re-recorded" versions. Anytime you see an individual's name (Jerry Corbetta) instead of the group (Sugarloaf) you should be concerned that it may not be the original versions of the songs. Also, when the label is "Madacy Records," it warrants closer scrutiny to be sure you're getting the original artist AND the original recordings, if that is what you are after.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of toe tappers!.......2005-02-14

If you remember the heyday of AM radio, this collection of 70s classics is a must-have! Although some of the songs are repeats of other, larger collections (Time Life's AM Gold and Have a Nice Decade boxed set) there are still enough hard-to-find tracks to make this one worth purchasing. "Love Me or Let Me Be Lonely" and "Nice to Be With You" are notable additions and so is "Rainy Night in Georgia." Wonderful sing-along for the ride to work.
