The least experimental and heaviest release by DTB and I love it!.......2006-08-25
Just when I'd almost given up on The Devin Townsend Band ever releasing anything that came anywhere close to the heights of "Ocean Machine - Biomech", the year 2000 saw "Physicist" released. While 1998's "Infinity" album displayed an immense amount of experimentation and originality, I could never relate to it in the way I had with the debut. There was just too much craziness and not enough metal for my liking. Then this baby came out and blew me away!
This album has more in common with Strapping Young Lad than any of Devin's other aliases. There's a much more metallic edge, a brutality and aggression that he'd normally set aside from his self titled band, and replace it with a more controlled progressiveness. Not here though! From beginning to end, "Physicist" batters the listener, while still containing the harmonies and flourishes that have always been associated with this band.
The almost insane sounding lunatic Devin personality was set aside for this recording while the angry, passionate Devin personality had a turn at the microphone and his performance is impressive to say the least. There are not many vocalists in extreme metal that are as talented as this guy, and when you add the fact that his guitar abilities are also awesome, it's difficult not to be filled with admiration for the guy. Whether he's screaming his guts out or harmonising cleanly, he's simply captivating. But I'd have to say that this is where the real Gene Hoglan stood up with this entity. With a license to rock out, his drumming on this album is outstanding. He's a mechanical genius and it's great to hear him in such good form.
If I had to pick highlights, I'd go with the massive sounding epic "Kingdom" and the simply rocking "Jupiter" with it's in your face variational anthems. But there is no filler material here and the entire 47 minutes are totally well spent. I still don't think it's as good as "Ocean Machine - Biomech", but that's mainly due to the originals 73 minutes running time spoiling me entirely.
If you're into Strapping Young Lad and don't know much about The Devin Townsend Band, then this is the album you're most likely going to enjoy. But it's the least progressive of them all, so some of the normal fans of this band may not find as many variations on here as they're used to. As for me, I love it entirely!
Really 3 1/2 stars.......2005-08-19
This is a unique album. Some of it, like the track "Death", could live happily on a Strapping Young Lad CD. But the production may turn some people off, as well as the happy-sounding keyboards. For me, this album is worth the price for "Material" and "Namaste". The vocals on the latter (especially the very end), though buried in the mix, will remind you why Steve Vai hired young Devin to sing for him way back when.
Strapping Young Lad on a diet.......2004-04-22
Physicist has always been voted the least favourite Devin Townsend solo album among the fans on both the official DT and SYL boards. Although very strong in its own right, I guess I can see why it is not right up there with the likes of Ocean Machine, Terria and Infinity. The core SYL fans, however, seem to lean towards this disc more than any other solo material from Devin.
Basically on Physicist Devin, for the first time, did not experiment with as many new ideas and push his music in more unexplored directions. This album kind of sounds like a lighter version of Strapping Young Lad but still has the ambient and classic Townsend vibe to it. Overall it's very speed metal oriented with slight modern touches thrown in. Devin himself agrees that Physicist is a stripped down version of something that was already there, but for someone who's never heard any SYL before, it is safe to say he's in for a treat because in the end Physicist does sound different from Devin's other albums. It's faster, angrier and more in your face.
This was also the first album where Devin was able to reach a wider fanbase due to the widespread distro support. The album still presents Devin's body of work with more accessible sensibilities. It's like if someone has never heard any Devin Townsend stuff before and picks up Infinity or Terria they may be shocked. Physicist isn't that way. That's what sets it apart from the rest of Devin's catalog. It has the potential to click with you right from the start.
To be honest I listen to this album the least often because every other solo album from Devin is more appealing to me. They're more experimental, more progressive and offer more depth. When I'm in the mood for some heavier stuff, I usually prefer SYL's City or their last one. Also of note is that Devin was going through a very hard time writing this album. It got to the point that releasing the disc turned into a real big mess. And I believe all of this has reflected on the record. I'm not putting Physicist down or anything because it's still 100% Devin Townsend and a very deep album, just not on the same level as Terria and Ocean Machine to me.
wow.......2004-02-26
this is utter chaos. that is all i can say about it. believe me, this is one of the only chaotic cd's that is HAPPY!! STRONGLY RECOMENDED

Great stuff.......2000-12-24
However, this isn't his best CD. It's a terrific listen, with Dev's trademark chords, humour, intensity and general epicness, but it isn't "special" in the way Biomech and Infinity were. He put an ungodly amount of work into making those albums; here he is more relaxed (so to speak). Devin has described it as an "in-between record", and this seem appropriate. Buy the Ocean Machine disc before getting this one if you are new to the Devin catalogue.
This is a very consistent, no-nonsense sort of album. All the songs are great, the standouts being Kingdom, The Complex, and in particular the towering Planet Rain. Jupiter is the weakest track, but it's still catchy and highly listenable (nice "clean" guitar sound). A definite must-have for fans.
Genious. Again........2000-12-11
This new one is kind of "Infinity Heavy". In style it's a blend of Biomech, Infinity and the harder SYL. It features all of Devins genious from catchy poppy to heavy metal, all woven in marvellous arrangements with incredible harmony. It's only because of the harder metal parts, that I give 4 stars instead of 5 (I'm old, shy and musically faint-hearted). But if you don't mind the harder edge, it will be at least as impressive and unbeliefable as "Infinity". In past I could not live without "Biomech" and "Infinity". From now on "Physicist" joins this group.

Spice Girls mixed with Strapping Young Lad.......2005-01-15
I read in an interview once with Devin Townsend, how he called this album before it came out, "A cross between the Spice Girls and SYL" and ever since then i've wondered what the HELL that would sound like. Now i know. Now i'm impressed. Now i have heard the Spice Girls energy and Pop-catchyness, mixed with Strapping Young Lad's intense schizophrenia. This CD is extremely energetic to say the least.
I don't know how Devin Townsend does it, but he makes such great CD's. He's an awesome producer who has produced many bands albums (I read also that he'd love to produce any future Meshuggah albums, as he believes that they are the future of metal. I truly hope that he does produce one of their albums, because you can imagine how good it would sound with Devin adding to it) and Devin, plain and simple, really is a musical genius.
I recommend this album for any person who wants to listen to something different. If you like Devin Townsend and his other works, do not hesitate to get it. This is extremely different to really anything i have heard in "Metal" and everytime you listen to it, you get more out of it, and it's never boring. Also check out some of Devin's other works; Accelerated Evolution (the Devin Townsend Band), Terria (Devin Townsend) and of course any Strapping Young Lad record. I rate this 4.5/5
That crazy Devin............2003-06-27
This one isnt for the faint hearted folks. While it doesnt quite achieve the level of intensity visited by another of his outfits, Strapping Young Lad, this record sees Devin in a mood to punish our ears and grapple with our senses. Unlike the wonderful Ocean Machine, this album avoids treading the lush ambiet textures and driving rock of 'Biomech'. Strange as it may sound, here Devin mixes hyper-kinetic rhythms and stacatto flourishes, all overlaid with a veritable army of guitars which have the mentality of a cavalry charge, with melodic choruses and dreamy interludes. Even more incredibly (this is a testament to Dev's musical genius) it works, well, for the most part. Opener 'Namaste' exemplifies the album's focus well: a charging riff underpinnes by gene Hoglan's masterful, supersonic drumming, and Devin's vocals reaching gorgeous heights on a brutal yet eerily lovely chorus. Tracks like 'Jupiter', 'The Complex', and especially 'Material' extend these ideas (the latter is uncharicteristically melodic). This is still very heavy music, just mixed with other ideas. The epic 'Planet Rain' embraces prog rock ideas, and abandons intense heaviness for the most part, and this is what I find most appealing about Devin's music: it is diverse and experimental, heavy and light, yet still maintains the consistency and unique sound which drew one to the mans work in the first place. This record is no exception to these ideals. The album is, of course, not perfect: one can occasionally feel bogged down in the glut of musical onslaught in the first few tracks, and one feels some of the tracks could have been improved with additions like better lyrics. The fact remains though that Devin delivers again: I've owned this since it came out, and still play it fairly regularly. Great for banging your head, but imbued with an experimental and challenging edge that makes it exciting. Recommended to metal fans and to prog fans, although its a world away from Yes, so be warned. This is brutal, diverse, engaging music, from a manic and prolific artist.
Extreme Future Pop Metal of the Highest Order.......2003-03-25
99% of people listening to or thinking of buying a Devin Townsend record are Strapping Young Lad fans. Now this album does take a majority of its influences from SYL but I don't think most SYL will really like this. Why? Well because most of the vocals are pop-rock orientated and many will find the extreme drum's & guitar/ pop vocal concept too weird or even offensive. The best way I can describe this cd is for you to imagine the Foo Fighters and SYL locked in a small room and forced to play as loud as possible, at the same time. It really does sound like that.
The first time I heard it I thought it was a mess, not because it sounded really extreme but because it sounded a little gay. However after bearing with it for a few listens, it has really started to shine. Just forget your inhibitions and listen to it for what it is, not what you want it to be. If you want the more extreme stuff check out some of his other albums/projects.
The shining lights of this lp are tracks 4 and 7, but it has to be mentioned that no track is poor or 'a filler'. There are 11 tracks and each track is an average 4 or 5 minutes, so its a decent length for your money.
On the music front the drumming and guitar work is absolutly insane, just as you'd expect from Townsend. The drumming especially, does have a military precision and apocalyptic ambiance to it. The singing is very melodic, Townsend does have a good voice as is apparent in SYL's Live In Australia LP. There is some more intense screaming in places but overall after you break through the 'gay' barrier, the voice is a pleasure to hear and such a wonderful contrast to the guitar/drum work.
The production is also top class, its slightly polished compared to extreme metal albums in general but it isn't over done. Townsend himself is a bit of a computer music/ production nerd so its got to be good. He said in a recent interview that the last lp he bought was Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory, why?, well just to listen to the production. Apparantly one of the tracks cost £1m to produce!
P.S- Also check out SYL's latest album. Just another example of Townsend's genius/madness!
Warning.......2003-01-14
After you experience the explosive energy, depth, and creativity shown on this album, you may find it difficult to appreciate your old favorites like you once did. I know I have.
Why an artist like Devin remains relatively obscure is beyond me. All I can say is, please buy his albums so he can afford to go on making music for us.
A Mixture CD.......2002-03-20
This is the CD that Devin made to close his 'heavy' part of his career, it is SYL mixed with Ocean Machine, unique sound:
1. Namaste, a fast song, aggressive vocals, but that melody is in there, good opener - 4/5
2. Victim - Not the best song on the CD, still good though - 4/5
3. Material - The single from the CD, it has got a pop speed metal (Devin's name for it) sound to it, not heavy enough for SYL or melodic enough for Ocean Machine, it is a Physicist song - 4/5
4. Kingdom - The SYL influence starts to appear in the songs from now on, the sound gets harder - 4/5
5. Death - Now, this is a death metal type song, would have fit into SYL - City fine, it may be one of Devin's heaviest songs ever, brutal song - 5/5
6. Devoid - Another filler type song to me, but with Devin, filler doesn't mean bad, just means not as good - 3/5
7. The Complex - Probably the best mix of SYL & Ocean Machine on the CD, hardly any aggressive vocals but the music is hard, great song - 5/5
8. Irish Maiden - This song strikes me as a comedy song, as the intro is just fun - 5/5
9. Jupiter - This sound mixes in with the last song to make an incredible combination, the water based ideas of Ocean Machine start to appear in these songs - 4/5
10. Planet Rain - An Ocean Machine style Epic, with harder music, the chorus & instrumental parts are brilliant - 5/5
Bonus - The bonus track (I think) called Forgotton is not mentioned on the song list, but it is there, like a demented remix of Bad Devil from Infinity, worth a listen - 4/5
Overall, this CD is 4/5. The mix of SYL & OM worked better than expected & people give it credit for
