Sam Endicott will probably never be taken seriously. Not after fronting a band called Skabba the Hut. Not after switching ridiculous dreadlocks for an even more ridiculous faux-hawk. And certainly not after taking a feud with the Killers' Brandon Flowers seriously. It's too bad because Endicott's band the Bravery has made a second album that is worth taking seriously. On The Sun and the Moon, the New York five-piece trades in the faux British accents and Duran Duran synthesizer flares of its self-titled 2005 debut for something a little more real. Bursting to life with sweeping, opulently textured songs like "This Is Not the End" and "Time Won't Let Me Go," it's a warmer and statelier set that seems somehow more dignified. Give or take a few stray lyrics, it could easily pass for the work of a band that has unexpectedly stumbled on credibility. --Aidin Vaziri

3 out of 5 stars A somewhat unsatisfying transformation.......2007-07-11

With The Bravery's debut album being a very admirable part of the regrettably brief new wave resurgence movement in music alongside such similar artists as The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and Editors, I hoped that their second release would sound fairly similar to their self-titled release, which is one of my all-time favorite albums. I'm all for bands going in new directions, but unfortunately The Bravery seems to have moved in a direction that is more or less a bland alternative style, and comes short of the appeal of their prior upbeat 80's-ish style. Only two or three tracks maintain the style of the self-titled debut, and conveniently they are some of the album's better songs. I liked approximately six tracks including the intro; among them are "Believe", "This Is Not the End", "Tragedy Bound", and "The Ocean". I did not intensely enjoy too many of my favorites on this album however, unlike I have enjoyed past songs "Rites of Spring", "An Honest Mistake", and "Tyrant". Basically the band sounds like a blend of newer Arctic Monkeys with newer Kaiser Chiefs, except with an electronic touch on occasion. Although I am a fan of both those bands, I dislike The Bravery's take on the style used on The Sun and the Moon, and really was fairly unimpressed with the lyrics as well. Still, the album has a fair amount of good melodies on it, and while I didn't enjoy enough of them to justify a purchase, I'd still give this CD three stars since it was if nothing else a mildly decent effort.

5 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight!.......2007-07-03

I almost didn't buy this CD because of the reviews here on Amazon. What a mistake that would have been!!! This one is very similar to the first one, but even more interesting because it is more varied. I LOVED their debut album - it's one of the only CDs I have (out of hundreds!) that I can listen to over and over without getting sick of it. The Sun and the Moon has the same infectious beats, but isn't QUITE as peppy as the first one with respect to the lyrics. Its depth makes it very interesting to listen to, and I have a feeling I'll like it even more as I listen to it again and again. If you're on the fence about this one, give it a chance!!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than others will lead you to believe........2007-06-22

Most of my favorite bands that have put out new albums in the last year or so seem to have changed their sound for the worst ie Linkin Park, Incubus, Evanescence, 311 etc. So when I read the reviews on here about the Bravery changing their sound as well I figured as much and was apprehensive to buy the new cd. However, the change is slight and still sounds like The Bravery. There are still several songs with the electronica sound and those that aren't make up for it with clever lyrics and a distinct Bravery-esk sound. If you enjoyed their first cd, this one is a must buy.

Dawn Upshaw graces us with a template of nocturnal delights. The various musical styles range from Monteverdi to Crumb, keeping the listener from ever getting too comfortable. Her interprations of Warlock's haunting "Sleep" and Schwartner's "Black Anemones" are well- crafted and bewitching, but her usually-stellar musical sense is misguided in a disappointing "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" by Villa- Lobos. She sings youthfully and without vocal abandon, and the middle section is void of passion. Her lovely light voice sometimes treads dangerously on girlishness; it's most satisfying when exhibiting its full meaty radiance. Upshaw's pleasurable artistry creates a dreamy recording. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good example of Upshaw's adventurous programming.......2006-08-24

Early on Dawn Upshaw carveda niche for herself on the New York music scene with daring song recitlas, often at the 92nd St. Y, that critics adored. This CD gives us a perfect example, ranging form Dowland and Monteverdi to Crumb and Schwantner. Except for the Villa-Lobos, most of the selections will be obscure for the average listener. I wish I could say the results totally delighted me. But Upshaw seems a little uninvolved here, and the theme of Morpheus, god of sleep, suggests that the tone is too consistently nocturnal. There's no denying her artistry, but this is one Upshaw recital I rarely pull out of a listen all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars Better than average Upshaw recording. Entertaining.......2006-04-29

'White Moon, Songs to Morpheus' sung by Dawn Upshaw are 12 pieces written by a wide variety of composers, but all dealing with sleep. I am almost always on the fence between four and five stars with Upshaw recordings, but this one is a clear five, as the variety of both vocal range and instrumental accompanyment makes it far more interesting than her single composer essays.

This may not be the best first album for someone new to Upshaw (See 'Dawn Upsahw, Soprano), but if you like her, it should definitely be on your list.

5 out of 5 stars Best Upshaw Recording.......2004-05-04

Almost as good as Upshaw live, as I saw last week in Pittsburgh. I agree also, the Schwanter is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard and she sings it beautifully with the piano. All other songs are excellent, esp. Weep ye no More...the Crumb songs are unusual but don't affect the worth of purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Making Connections.......2002-03-17

Most of Dawn Upshaw's albums are so artistic in their conception, that you want to buy them regardless of what is on it. It takes true talent to "sell" Monteverdi, Schwantner, Crumb, and Purcell on the same CD! But Upshaw does with performances that are sensitive, but always in the spirit of "Songs to Morpheus." Upshaw doesn't just program her album with songs that all share the same literary theme, but she instills the idea of Morpheus, and by extension, the moon, in all the pieces--the "soother of suffering."
Handel's "Gentle Morpheus" is sung with gentle restraint, bringing out the subtle nuances so prevalent in Handel's vocal works. Upshaw has a clear understanding of early music performance and does not seek to "overinterpret" the music. Likewise, her performance of the newer pieces are equally sensitive. Although her diction is a bit obtrusive in the verse of Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, her vocalise is so moving, particularly at the end. Her performance of the Crumb is worthy of Jan de Gaetani, and other top-notch performers of Crumb's music.

5 out of 5 stars The right selections for the right voice.......2001-12-01

The theme of this music is Sleep and Dreams. The 'night setting' is reflected in a very interesting variety of songs, both old and modern. The ethereal quality of much of this music
is well suited to Upshaw's silver toned voice, which expresses the fantasy and other worldliness of the compositions without losing the idea that the human soul can find fantastic strangeness and blessed comfort in each night of its existence.
By the way, and most significantly: the music is beautiful beyond words.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-04-13

I am so glad i bought this cd. I had a choice between this, Churn and Shihad. I'v heard all of them and this is by far the best Shihad album. "Intro" is a perfect gateway into one of the best opening songs ever - "My Mind's Sedate", this song just has so much power and energy. I regularly put this cd in my car and turn it all the way up, I defy you not to start headbanging or playing air guitar to "The General Electric". This song contains one of my favourite song bits ever. The bridge before the first chorus. Jesus I just go absolutely nuts when i hear this bit and it never gets old. "Pacifier" is just too good for words. "Spacing" has got to be one of my favourite songs on this cd. A fantastic sing-along chorus that just makes you feel good. Same goes with "Life In Cars". This cd is at the number five slot in my collection. It should be in your's too.

4 out of 5 stars Great Kiwi Rock n Roll.......2003-11-15

The General Electric is one of those albums you can listen to right through and not get bored. The songs all flow together quite nicely, which is a plus for any CD. This is the fourth offering from Wellington based band, Shihad. Although not their absolute best, it is certainly up there.

Stand-out songs are of course My Mind's Sedate, The General Electric, Pacifier and Sport & Religion. Others seem to flow quite nicely between these tracks.

I can imagine this album will stand the test of time, unlike many albums by artists during it's time. This album is different to Killjoy, Churn and Shihad as it is more laid back, and generic sounding. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as eacgh album seems to have it's own unique sound, while still being the same band.

This album is generic rock without the bored singers and musicians. It is not very original when compared to their other 3 albums. But it is far better than their recent CD "Pacifier".

Overall, If you are new to Shihad, I would consider forking out for Killjoy or Churn as they depict what Shihad was orginally about.

2 out of 5 stars Shihad yes, this album a resounding NO!.......2001-10-22

I'll start this off with the assertion that Shihad are the best New Zealand band I've ever heard, and I live here. Churn was very nearly a very good album, Killjoy was an excellent one and the self titled album was 50/50 - Half the songs were classics, the other half was disturbingly awful. However, sadly, this album has followed the direction of the last one further, resulting in an album so completely dull that I just can't be bothered to listen to it any more.
Not that it's resoundingly bad. It's just so uninteresting I don't see the point. All of you lot who're giving it good reviews... Come on, you can't really tell me this album is as good as Killjoy. It's just radio-friendly rock music with absolutely no flair whatsoever. Yes, the band are talented musicians, but talented musicians playing dull unoriginal material is something that I'll leave to Dream Theater fans. Shihad used to be exciting, anthemic and damned good ambassadors for New Zealand rock. Now they just sound like any polished rock band anywhere - all the life has gone. I can't seriously think that this album would attract the fanbase (members of Faith No More et al) that Churn (for all its flaws) and Killjoy did. Speaking as a musician, this just doesn't inspire a second listen.

A crying shame.

5 out of 5 stars Shihad will rock your world.......2001-07-28

Wow, what a CD. Once again Shihad prove that they are the greatest band you've never heard of with their 4th and best CD so far: The General Electric! Lead singer Jon Toogood's screaming vocals, the rifty merciless guitar of Phil Knight, The booming bass of Karl Kippenberger and the great heavy beats of Tom Larkin combine to blow your mind and bang your head. All tracks are great and there are no frayed ends. The way the intro leads smoothly into the first and greatest ever NZ rock track "my minds sedate" sets the tone for the entire abulm. Everything is pure gold from the hard rock of my minds sedate, just like everybody else and metal song to the sing along life in cars and sport and religion and the haunting beauty of pacifer. Buy it if you love rock!

5 out of 5 stars An American's Response - Believe it! Very, Very Good Album.......2001-05-30

A power chord, riff-laden, hard working album that is worth the extra cost to buy it as an import. Tired of spending money on CD's with one or two good songs and the rest filler material? With the exception of "Life in Cars" this album is nothing but good songs. Listen to it loud and enjoy... By the way what the heck is an Antipode?

4 out of 5 stars Great Selections! Sound Quality Should Be Remastered For a Better Sound!.......2007-07-05

For the benefit of others who may be interested in this disc, I'm going to start off by listing the proper tracks that are on the disc and not the erroneous product description that Amazon, true to form, has put out. The tracks are:

Disc 1:

Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
YMCA - Village People
Rock the Boat - The Hues Corporation

December 1963 - The Four Seasons
Lady Marmalade - LaBelle
Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren
I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers Band
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

Disc 2

Joy to the World - Three Dog Night
Le Freak - Chic
Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb
My Sharona - The Knack
Brick House - Commodores
What a Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers
That's the Way I Like It - K C and the Sunshine Band
Theme from Shaft - Isaac Hayes
Dream Weaver - Gary Wright
American Pie - Don McLean
Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
Best of My Love - The Emotions
Back Stabbers - The O'Jays
Don't Bring Me Down - ELO
You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt
Don't Pull Your Love - Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds
I'm Not In Love - 10cc
Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe - Barry White
Let's Stay Together - Al Green

I'd say all the tracks are very representative of the 70's and so the track selections are impeccable. The sound qualiy is okay but given the quality of what's out there at the moment, it would be ideal if this whole album could be given a proper remastering treatment to clean up the sound.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Life in General ROCKS!!!!!.......2001-08-20

Each CD LIG puts out gets better and better, and this is no exception. "Big Sky" is an incredible track as well as "She Cries" and "No Need to be Lonely." These two guys have a lot of energy and creativity in their song-writing and performing. They have truly mastered the drums, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, tamborine, and toy piano (to name a few) to make for a wonderful listening experience. This band is NOT TO BE MISSED!

5 out of 5 stars Cool guys great music.......2000-07-02

A duo who cannot do wrong, writing music that could be classics if given the right exposure. They rock.

4 out of 5 stars The long awaited album is finally here!.......2000-06-27

Jason LeVasseur and Jerry Chapman provide a refreshing change to todays musical scene. They write there own songs and play their own instruments, take that Backstreet Boys! The new album blends together seamlessly the contrasting musical styles of LaVasseur and Chapman. Though only two, the sound is that of a full band. Having toured together for years, the new album is tight and feels as if they are singing live for you. The songwriting is intimate and heartfelt. "Big Sky" is magical, "Hopscotch in Oz" highlights Chapman's strong voice, "Spacegirl" is hard to get out of your head, and the rest of the album does not disappoint. Don't just buy the CD, make sure that you catch them live the next time they are in your town. They are a fun act live, and this album catches that energy.
