Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Described as "a major Russian prodigy," Nina Kotova, daughter of two musicians, had a promising musical beginning, but had to leave Russia and spent some years modeling and composing before returning to the cello. This debut recording proves that she is indeed very talented, but is designed mainly to display her tone, which is full and pure in every register and rather beautiful, if without much variation. The program consists of short pieces, mostly transcriptions, predominantly Russian and predominantly slow, sentimental, and melancholy. Kotova made many arrangements herself, presumably including the orchestrations, and there are also several of her own compositions. She describes the latter as representing real-life events and experiences; several contain elements of jazz and improvisation. The orchestrations throughout are full of color and sound effects, but seem more suitable as accompaniments for films than for concert pieces. The playing reflects the rather limited expression and mood of the music, and is clean, disciplined, and controlled. It will be interesting to see how this gifted player approaches a musically more substantial, varied program. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Garbage.......2002-10-17
This was my first exposure to Ms Kotova's work, and I have to say it does not inspire me to listen to her more. Perhaps I should have started with some other work of hers. The folks who glow about her tone, etc obviously have no exposure to REAL cellist. Suffice it to say, if you are a true classical music fan, run away from this garbage as fast as you can. If, on the other hand, you live by the brilliance of cHarlot Church, or Andrea Bocelli, then this is exactly the sort of thing for you. For those who sincerely want to hear what alternatives there are to this cellist, may I suggest anything by Janos Starker or Mischa Maisky, and Anner Bylsma for variety. THEN we can talk cello.
luxurious tone.......2002-02-08
I have the great pleasure of living in the city as Ms. Kotova,
Dallas, Texas. Although I do not know her well, her playing is
stunningly beautiful and this CD brings the best out in her. i
look forward to her next CD
wow!.......2001-11-14
What a gorgeous tone, expressive, delicate and powerful all at
once. I look forward to the next CD, hopefully concerto
repertoire.
Beautiful, Haunting and Lingers in the Mind.......2001-11-03
I bought Nina Kotova's debut CD after my parents mentioned how thrilled friends of theirs in Salt Lake City had been after attending one of her concerts. I played this CD two or three times a week for six months until other members of my household started pleading for more musical variety. I still put it on occasionally, and more often when I'm alone. It has a haunting quality to it, a sweet beauty and melancholy that linger in the mind long after the music is over. I have bought it as a gift to friends and family members, including a long-term houseguest of ours who practically requested it when she left. Kotova's life story is fascinating -- persecution, exile to two countries, further musical studies, modeling (!), etc., but the main theme in her life and that of her parents is love of music, and it shows on every track of this CD. It is a wonderful debut piece for a relatively young artist. I keep checking back here to see if she has come out with a new CD, and I look forward to hearing her over the years as she matures as an artist.
Sweet tone.......2001-07-27
I discovered Kotova through a Readers Digest article, and was intrigued, so I bought the disc. The many short selections of the cd is not enough to fully determine what she can bring to the great masterpieces. Based on the selections contained on the cd, one can immediately tell that she is a great cellist with a deep resonant tone. The standards, like Vocalise and Petroushka are well played. The other pieces have been orchestrated by Kotova, which makes the interpretation unique. I always enjoy hearing common pieces in new setting. Let's wait till Kotova tackles some warhorses, like the Shostakovich concerto, or the Bach concertos. If it's anything like her performances here, they will be welcomed by the classical community.

Customer Reviews:
A Second Collection of Rarely Heard Russian Opera Music.......2005-10-05
Naxos has released a second collection of Russian tenor arias by Vladimir Grishko. Like the first volume, we have a beautiful tenor voice treating us to some rarely heard arias from operas not often performed outside of Russia. Grishko has good control of his voice which is a somewhat light and agile one that is free from strain. Probably the only familiar pieces to non-Russian listeners would be the brief orchestral excerpts from Glinka's A LIFE FOR THE TSAR and Polovtsian March from Borodin's PRINCE IGOR so listening is a treat in and of itself.
The two strengths of this recording are similar to those of the first volume: there is a variety to the music on the disc and Grisko's overall performance. While this is a good disc, it is not quite as strong as the first collection. The orchestral performances are somewhat inconsistent. Also the selections themselves do not have a great impact, at least in comparison with those of the first set. Still, this recording at a price that is more than reasonable will add variety to any operatic library.

Album Description
atmosphere, arrangement, sound, layering, and noise
Bethany Curve creates flowing soundscapes that'll make you feel as if you're floating above the clouds. Great music to space out to late at night. This disc was often compared to The Cure, Lush, Ride or Slowdive.
Customer Reviews:
The gloomier side of shoegazer.......2007-03-06
Even for an old shoegazer fan like me, Bethany's Curve's music with it's downright melancholic and ominous sounds and largely unintelligible lyrics, takes some getting use to. It was this website that led to my "discovery" of Bethany Curve (BC) after I had previously discovered the much more accessible band Voyager One, (V1) when I was trying to find other bands in the shoegazer genre. While both V1 and BC owe much to The Verve, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, and perhaps early Pink Floyd, BC is the much heavier band -- think the Cure's "Pornography," as opposed to The Verve's "Storm in Heaven," which is more V1s style. With BC, as opposed to V1, I really had to listen several time before I truly "got it." But I'm glad I persevered.
BC's debut, "Skies A Crossed Sky," contains long slowly developing atmospheric songs, with infathomable (perhaps pretentious) titles such as "troly," "grand shanka," "spacirilie," and "terpsichore." On the inside of the cd cover are the following apropos words: "atmosphere, arrangement, sound layering, noise." After the listed 13 songs conclude, the band does some real experimentation which could be part of a multi-sensory exhibit at the Whitney Museum (ala The Stone Roses at the conclusion of "Seconds Coming"). But stick with this album -- it works.
The first track "Vanish" sets the stage for all that follows. Gloomy swirling melodies with lots of distortion and feedback. "Troly," and some other tracks provided an odd Eastern European feel. With the best song on the album "Spacerilei," the band rocks a bit with a heavy drum beat surrounded by the usual distorted minor-key guitar chords -- truly a remarkable song.
Track five (terpsichord) could be something that early Catherine Wheel might have done. Track seven ("Mot Juste") a short instrumental, sounds almost reminiscent of the intro to U2s, "Where the Streets Have No Name," whereas the following track ("Follow from Swallow") oddly combines the feel of early Pink Floyd with what Interpole would sound like years later.
According to I-tunes, the 12th track ("Serene and Smiling") is one of the bands most downloaded tracks, probably because it's a little less murky than the others ( but still on the depressing side). Interestingly, the band's last song (that's listed) "Almost Perception," is easily the most accessible. In fact, it sort of reminds me of Oasis -- which, believe me, is quite a departure from the rest.
A terrific debut for an extremely intriguing band, and a nice counterpoint to Voyager One. The work of both bands must be explored by every shoegazer fan.
sweet whirlpool of delicious chewy noise!.......2006-06-30
having been in a shoegazing mood lately, i found myself surfing the web for some purveyours of that pedal drenched noise that seems to quench a very thirsty part of my soul. i had run through my catalogue of usual suspects..MBV, slowdive, JAMC, and my personal faborite, ride. i wouldnt say i got tired of them, more like they made me hungry for new stuff, just to see if the torch had indeed been passed.
i was aware of some of the next generation of shoegazers...nu-gazers, if you will (although lets hope our scene never produces a fredo like fred durst...hence, my fear of "nu" anything...) starflyer59 are a good example of really old school sounding dream pop. i really like autolux as well, and while i dont necessarily think he's a direct descendant of the shoegaze line, ulrich schnauss has kind of grown ion me. my wife played his record as we went to sleep pretty mucn nonstop for a couple months. anyway, i felt the need to dig deeper, and stumbled across bethany curve. i checked out a song on itunes, then another, and before you know it, i had downloaded their entire catalogue.
if you ever had a sweetspot for shoegazing, this is a must have band in your collection. solid pop numbers sit alongside dreamy atmospherics, and the result is a lulling, almost trancelike seductionand it is this swirl of sound, fast and propulsive followed by longer, more ambient numbers, then another poppier bit just to snap you from your trance.
the dreamier numbers use layer of effects and washes of sound over lush vocals buried deep in the mix. the pop numbers use chiming guitar chords as the solid center for catchy melodies and propulsive baggy beats, then they swaddle that in the same cottony, billowing layers, and voila...you have a perfect dream pop concoction.
the band they immediately reminded me of was kitchens of distinction, or maybe curve (which, given the name of the band, i have ton think is no accident). i think their melodies are stronger than either of those two, if you were to take simply \ the chord progression and hooks, and remove the approach , the melodies recall a lot of early emo, a la, saves the day or jets to brazil. again, that is only in the notes on the page or played on the instrument. they both share the taste for minor key dirge-y hooks. that similarity stops there, however...no need for any punk aggression or soaring vocal lines. bethany curve are content to set the bait, drp the line and sit and wait for the listener. once theyve got you, though, theyve got you!
as i said, i downloaded their entire catalogue, and have had it playing on repeat for a few nights now, i decided to give the records the attention they deserved and listen to them in order. this, being the first, has obviously had the longest to soak in, and it does its best to set the bar very high for the rest of the band's output. having sampled the catalogue before taking a serious bite, there is no apparent dropoff in the quality of the bands output. i am really looking forward to exploring the worlds of dreamy sound inside these lusciously dense songs.
i withhold that 5th star simply b/c i believe they can make an even greater record.
5 stars!.......2000-09-06
If you are a fan of swallow, MBV, and Lush, you'll love this CD.
This is the best in spacerock.......2000-09-06
I just got this CD. Super soaring guitars and amazing songs. Highly recommended.

Album Description
Dark Beauty is a beautiful and powerful extension of guitarist Issi Rozen's critically acclaimed CDs, Homeland Blues and Red Sea. Rozen continues to explore innovative musical territory by blending Middle Eastern and Latin motifs with post bop and straight ahead jazz. The results are a stunning album that offers a unique and inspiring musical experience. Dark Beauty features Issi Rozen on guitar, Gilad Barkan on piano, Thomson Kneeland on acoustic bass and Harvey Wirht on drums. These stellar musicians stretch musical boundaries throughout the album with playing that is intense, emotional and innovative. Furthermore, the CD has a strong and cohesive group sound that is focused on the musical interplay between the players and their personal interpretation of the music. Dark Beauty features beautiful compositions and great playing, ingredients that have been the hallmark of all superb jazz recordings.
Customer Reviews:
At this Point.......2004-04-22
Most young musicians in the world tend to cling to the styles of the most popular great artists of past decades as they tearfully search for a unique sound for their instrument and ideas. Every once and a while some young musician is reminded of how limitless their musical capabilities can be when they hear something along these lines. Some people believe jazz has dissolved and completely lost its central energy. If you listen closely, around the world there are a handfuls of artists here and there, with media attention and without, who are making progress and furthering our understanding of what music can do. Mr.Rozen has walked off of the beaten track and returned, bearing sounds never heard combined in such ways. I expected the result to be something I could listen to in my headphones at night to relax and groove to. The beauty of the music tends to this quite well...however...it also keeps me up late, wondering how he does it and where he could go next. No matter what, It runs deeper than my ears for sure. Sometimes we all forget what music can do, and here he reminds us and shows us what it can be in the future. Issi Rozen's amazing technical skill aside, what he makes with his talented quartet is not just innovative, but a reason to place more trust in the future of jazz and all music. Any music lover-It should immeadiatly go into your collection...For musicians, keep it in your stereo for a while...

Product Description
"Dying Beauty" is one of the more popular songs from James D Stark's debut album, "Fortress of Solitude" and now the song has been remixed several times to appeal to different tastes and give the track some club life. There are nice mixes by the likes of Tristraum, Assemblage 23, and Chinese Theatre, plus the artist's own new renditions, like a nice piano version to finish off the single. There's also an exclusive bonus song called "Aidra". This synthpop act has a somewhat darkwave mood, but also follows the trends set by the likes of Depeche Mode in his synthpop approach.
