Customer Reviews:
The Only Blind Guardian Album I Like.......2007-05-17
I don't know what the hell some of the other reviewers are talking about, as far as i'm concerned this is by far the best album they've done, well it's more my style anyway. It's raw & full of passion & more in the vien of thrash with a touch of power metal flavouring. I did not like anything else they did after this, but then i never really got into Blind Guardian myself because my first exposure to them was the later stuff which i immediatly did not like. It's actually my girlfriend who's into them & exposed me to their music. Anyhow to all those people out there that think it's a bit too rough around the edges, this sounds rough because that's how most metal albums sounded in the 1980s especially the early 1980s & i wouldn't want it any other way. It's because most bands couldn't afford fancy productiom (which is a good thing). Blind Guardian's later stuff is all far too clean & polished. Ok so their later music is far more mature, but then i'm not the most mature person. I'm just after metal albums that sound like metal albums & not too arty or polished. As for the vocals, they are perfectly fine on this album, i like them much better than the vocals on the later albums which again are too polished for my liking. Overall this is a classic metal album. If you want something that's produced to the eyeballs, you should consider their later albums. Otherwise if you're true metal fan raised on the stuff & you're used to the idea of a bit of roughness & don't expect to get everything out of it on the first listen, then this is more than likely your cup of tea & a great album to add to your collection. Highly recommended to those who like power metal influenced thrash like Heathen.
Good pure Blind Guardian.......2005-11-03
This album is one of the first albums that BG did. It has a more thrash oriented sound and is filled with all the typical passion of Blind Guardian. Many of these song are from the first album they did: Lucifer's Heritage. For some reason it is not listed under their albumbs. I guess it is becasue it was their first album. This is the studio version of Lucifer's Heritage that they released later. If you are looking for the true first album that BG did check out Lucifer's Heritage [IMPORT].
Battalions of Fear - Blind Guardian.......2005-09-04
Excellent! - and it was here within a week!
Humble Beginnings.......2004-11-22
It's hard, after listening to Battalions of Fear, to believe that this is the same band who would record classic albums like Imaginations from the Other Side and Nightfall in Middle Earth. Blind Guardian may have gone on to become the dominant force in power metal, but you'd hardly know it from their 1987 debut album. That's not to say it isn't a good album, it just isn't what you might expect. Battalions of Fear is pretty much a straightforward thrash album, which makes sense since thrash (both American and German) was the major metal style at the time. The fantasy-themed lyrics were still present, but the grand arrangements and epic concepts were nowhere to be found.
In many ways, I'm reminded of Metallica's Kill `em All when I listen to Battalions of Fear. They're both relatively brief albums, both concentrate on speed, both are a bit choppy and uneven, and both suffer from poor production. Perhaps more importantly, both albums would help set the bands on the road to becoming the major players in their fields. Of course Metallica has long since abandoned their thrash roots, while Blind Guardian is still the world's premier power metal band.
Battalions of Fear is vital for the dedicated Blind Guardian fan. Their other albums are a heck of a lot better, but this is where they started out. If you're new to Blind Guardian and are looking for a good starting point, skip this one and go straight to Imaginations from the Other Side. Once that one sinks in, listen to Nightfall in Middle Earth. It will likely become the standard by which you judge all other concept albums, if not all other power metal albums.
blind guardian at there best.......2004-07-19
I love the way that blind guardian put out there first albun the guitar solos r alot like iron maiden's their fast amazing and full of tallent. i also dig the double bass pedal it blends in with guitar anyways if u like older style metal that is really fast you should add this to your collection i cant get enough of it!
