Customer Reviews:
Supreme technical sorcery.......2004-11-12
Equal parts Theory in Practice, Cryptopsy, Atheist, Cynic, Dillinger Escape Plan... you get the idea. This is supremely technical metal, and easily as good as any of the aforementioned bands. Mostly fast paced technical shredding, with some jazz and classical influences. The parts of their music that really stand out are the softer acoustic parts (there's even a classical guitar song in there that somehow rocks!). No band has done the soft/heavy thing as well as this. The music is downright sinister, too. The metal attitude isn't compromized at all by the complexity. These guys are good enough musicians to make all these disparate elements come together naturally. Despite the deliberate awkwardness of some of the riffs, the music still manages to be listenable and catchy. The bass plays a prominent role in the music-- always my measure of a good metal band-- and adds another layer of jazzy complexity to the mix. Listening to this album is like watching an athlete or acrobat performing some incredible feat. You just have to sit there and marvel. I got this CD in the clearance bin of my local CD store-- the cover caught my eye, and I thought I'd take a chance on it. Albums like this are the reason I search through clearance bins! I go months without finding anything worthwhile, then a gem like this comes along.
