Don't expect Triumph. This is the beginning of Rik's jazz/fusion phase. He's still the best and most versatile guitar player around.

Rik puts out his best work since his Triumph days with this CD. This CD is filled with wonderful instrumentals as well as some great songs with Rik's powerful voice. A must buy if you like Rik Emmett!!!!!

Best Western Swing Band Ever!.......1999-10-29

I was a musician for 27 years and I thought I had heard it all or played it all when it came to Western Swing, but oh, how wrong I was. Several months ago a friend gave me a cassette that he had recorded of the Swing Shift Band. It was parts from three of their CD's and it got me right here!!!!!

Since then, I have purchased all of the CD's available of this great band and, as far as I am concerned, they are the all time greatest Western Swing Group that I have ever heard or played with.

Bob Wills' Texas Playboys were good, Leon McAuliffes' band was excellent, Hank Thompsons' Brazos Valley Boys were very good and the Troubadours were something to listen to, Asleep at the Wheel comes as close to any group to being as good as the Swing Shift Band but they're a distant second as far as I'm concerned. I have been retired from music for about 5 years now but if I could work (for free, if necessary) with this great group, I would come out of retirement in a heartbeat. I have asked before but haven't had any response, who are the side men that make the stars sound so good?

Judging by the first few tracks on Count Basie Orchestra's Swing Shift--the rollicking "Burnin'," "Easy Go," and "Four for Basie"--the band is trying to cash in on the swing revival that sawBig Bad Voodoo Daddy play at the 1999 Super Bowl halftime show and Brian Setzer miraculously extend his career. And why not? The CBO is, after all, the real deal, the big band that can be credited with defining the classic swing rhythm in Kansas City in the 1930's--remember, the Orchestra has been steadily touring and recording since Basie's death in 1984. But while the disc is indeed an exhilarating set of big band swing, peppered with impossibly tight horn arrangements and scorching solos from standouts like saxophonists Brad Leali and Kenny Hing and trumpeter Bobby Ojeda, it's also a lot more than that. Swing Shift is at once a classic swing album and a thoroughly modern big-band jazz record, with 11 new compositions and three classics showcasing brand new arrangements. Of course, everything here is impeccably done in the swinging Basie style, making Swing Shift an ideal disc both for older fans already hooked on the Orchestra's sound and for swing newcomers curious about the music's origins. --Ezra Gale

NOT a "Swing Music Revival" CD.......2003-02-14

Everyone on here keeps saying that this CD is such a great mirror of the swing revival of the late 90s. Well, apart from it being swing music, I just don't agree. The music that came out in that era, was cheap, greasy stuff meant to sell on the pop charts. Basie's band goes above and beyond that. Their songs demonstrate the classic Basie ability to ride the back of the beat like no one before them. Everything on this CD is perfect, down to Butch Miles' spectacular playing on Drum Thing. Buy it. It's a must own for any Basie fan, especially for the modern band led by Grover Mitchell.

A Very Serious Basie Fan Reports.......2000-07-19

This CD lives up to the very high standard established by Count Basie himself. Grover Mitchell and other veterans of the orchestra get it right in all the ways that the Basie Band is known for. Play it back-to-back with any other Basie issue and it delivers. You will notice some differences, especially at piano. That, of course, can't be helped. The Basie sound pulses through just the same and it's a slice of immortality to hear it continue into the 21st Century.

There is no denying the superb talent of the Count Basie Orchestra. I've seen them live, and they have an incredible sound, but this CD is a far cry from the CBO of the 40's and 50's, that REALLY could swing! The faster numbers are not all that inspiring, and none of the songs had that something I can't describe that gets you foot tapping to that infectious swingin' rhythm.

Extraordinary Basie Big Band Music to Close the 20th Century.......1999-11-08

"Swing Shift", the latest album by the Count Basie Orchestra directed by Grover Mitchell, is in the finest tradition of the original band. This band swings, playing marvelous arrangements Basie would have loved. Having heard the Basie band any number of times over the years, before and after Bill Basie's passing, it's safe to say that its great sound will cross the bridge to the new millenium and be around for decades to come.

And "Swing Shift"! What a great title for the Basie band's last album of the 20th Century!

Great big band sound!.......1999-09-29

The sound reproduction is outstanding. I liked the sound quality. The big band sound of Basie is back with this album. I recommend this to any one who is looking for good big band music to listen to. I heard the demo at a store and then stayed to listen to the whole album. I asked to buy it from the guy on the spot and he sold it to me!
