Album Description
Powerhouse Records is proud to offer another classic release in our "Guitarchives" series, a re-issue by the Legendary Danny Gatton. "Unfinished Business" was first released in 1987 for NRG Records and was Danny's last studio album before signing with Elektra Records in 1991.
The album is a typical Gatton eccelctic mix of Roadhouse/Honky Tonks style of American roots music; Blazing Country style Twangin' Instrumentals, Blues, Classic Swing Jazz, 50's style R&B, and timeless Ballads. In the mix of Gatton originals and Standards and Classics there are two bonus cuts: "Nit Pickin'" which was a Guitar Player Magazine soundpage from 1989, and did much to bring Danny's phenomenal Guitar playing to a wider International audience, and a previously un-released version of "Quiet Village" recorded in 1975 which later showed up on Danny's Major label debut album "88 Elmira St" on Elektra Records.
The album has been-re-mastered with a fat shimmering sound perfectly suited to enhance the sparkling "Twangy" Guitar sounds that are the Hallmark of the Danny Gatton Guitar sound. The re-designed package has new art work and a great cover photo of a very young Danny Gatton by Bob Berman as well as the original front cover art re-produced as the tray card art.
Titles include Nit Pickin', Lappin' It Up, Melancholy Serenade, Sky King, Homage To Charlie Christian, Sleep Walk, Fingers On Fire, Cherokee, Notcho Blues, and Quiet Village.

Legendary guitar........2006-12-01
Danny Gatton is a guitar genius. Everything is pristine, clean, and totally flawless. Nothing short of fantastic. Nit Pickin' & Sleepwalk are the strongest. His style on guitar cannot be outdone.
Finally they released this again !.......2005-05-27
Oh Yeah ! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yeah! The did it! Finally they did it! They released again "Unfinished business" which was the last album I didn't have from Danny Gatton! Yeah! My collection is now complete! I own everything Danny has ever recorded and published! I own the "whole story"! And what an incredibly story that has been! Danny was an amazing player, he was able to play every imaginable american music style with the best of them and probably better than the best players of each style! Jazz, rockabilly, blues, chickenpicking, surf, slide, acoustic, ballads, bluegrass everything, he could play everything with great authority and he hated to be categorized in just one of those kinds of playing because he knew he was able to play marvellous music in all those styles. Try to figure out that it happened in the nineties that Guitar Player Magazine readers voted him as the best country guitar player and he did never record a pure country album in his life! Talking about a spectacular player that could outplay every cat in the biz! But after all, he played something that was really personal out of all those influences. He play very good music not a bunch of licks taken from here or there. This album is among his best in my opinion together with "Redneck Jazz", "Redneck Jazz Explosion", "Relentless" with Joey De Francesco and few more. It's simply Danny at the top of his game. He was a living encyclopedia of american music. His '53 telecaster in his hands was able to produce some truly breathtaking rollercoaster music. He is one of the very few guys that have left me asking "How did he do that?" (to quote a very wellknown Eddie Van Halen phrase about Allan Holdsworth). I mean, "unifinished Business" is Danny at his best. And "When he's on, he's probably the best there is" (just to quote another wellknown statement, this time from Jimmy Page talking about Jeff Beck). Noone played the american music like Danny did. If you don't know Danny this one is a very good place to start. If you know Danny and you don't own this album you know what you're missing.
Will knock your socks off!.......2005-01-06
This is one of my favorite albums by Danny. It is a true potpourri of styles (but isn't that what Danny was all about?), and if anyone doubts that Danny was the greatest guitarist to walk on this sweet earth ... well just listen to this CD.
"Sleepwalk" had been in Danny's repertoire for many years when this was recorded, but he plays it with such feeling, such inventiveness, such utter mastery of his instrument, that if it were a painting, it would be hanging in the Louvre. This is a cut to be treasured, listened to over and over ... it grows more beautiful with each repeated listening.
"Notcho Blues" is, I think, a tribute to Roy Buchanan, Danny's elder fellow Tele player, from whom he picked up a lot of guitar. Roy has a similar sounding cut on one of his albums, except his blues stays on the tonic for the entire piece. Danny stays on the tonic for an extended period, but then moves to the subdominant and completes the blues form. This is done so dramatically and with such soul, that it will blow you away. Awesome!!
"Fingers on Fire" shows Danny's humorous side as well as demonstrating his monster technique. It is the musical equivalent of a Marx Brothers movie.
"Cherokee" is Danny's tribute to his first musical influence, Les Paul. He does an admirable job imitating Les, with the help of some overdubbing.
"Lappin' it Up" is played on a lap steel guitar, and The Charlie Christian piece is played on a big Gibson.
"Melancholy Serenade", Jackie Gleason's TV theme, is given the royal treatment. This cut shows why Danny was really one of a kind: he didn't play his guitar like most other guitarists. On this cut, he plays it as if it were a tenor saxophone. His solo is so funky, so full of soul, you can imagine Cannonball Adderly (on tenor) playing it (his lines are definitely not those of a guitarist). He could make his Tele sound like a B-3 organ, a pedal steel, a cow bell, etc.
The other songs are equally delightful. This CD is a must for any fans of Danny, of guitar, or just of plain great music.

Jay-Z & R Kelly - Unfinished Business .......2007-02-26
Jay-Z & R Kelly second and final collobration album was "Unfinished Business" (2004) a subpar follow up to their mediocre first collaboration joint "Best of Both Worlds". While the idea of combining one of the Rap Game's most well known MC's with one of R & B's seemed like it had potential it never resulted in a worthwhile effort in my opinion. I was a fan of both these artists in their early day's, but got tired of the quantity over quality formula. The sad thing about R Kelly, is he was one of R & B's most talented artist's but has blemished his reputation by his personal actions. I personally can't enjoy his music like I used to. This album is full of throw away material (ego-fest), listening to it I believe those who state it was the left overs from the first effort and was released purely for monetary reasons. Production comes from Poke, Tone & R Kelly, and is horrible, this uninspired release has no depth or substance. I am not surprised that these two had a falling out during their tour, R Kelly is currently suing Jay-Z over it. I read another reviewer's release who stated this album as "Tolerable", their is nothing tolerable about this album to me, I suggest taking care of some of your own "Unfinished Business", rather then waisting your time listening to this worthless release. Two thumbs down.
Garbage.......2006-03-20
I like Jay Z and R. Kelly...and big fans of the both but do not get this if you are a fan of Jay or R's music, because this is nothing like either prior solo albums this is garbage 10 tracks of garbage and anyway (Best of both worlds?) maybe 4 mainstream but not to me the best of both worlds! Unfinished business,(this is business?) That's why they have beef now because it didn't sound right to either 1, this is the type of garbage that you would put in the refrigerator by mistake because you may have thought it was a stick of butter or maybe some can milk, or u may put it in some boiling water because you think it was some spaghetti noodles and forgot it was actually a Jay-Z R.Kelly cd, to put this in English DONT BUY!
Unfinished Business ----- Jay-Z & R.Kelly.......2006-01-12
If The Best Of Both Worlds was Jay-Z and R.Kelly's "Fiesta"-fueled Friday night then Unfinished Business (Def Jam), the duo's second collaborative album, is their Saturday night sequel. Jigga and Kells re-team with the intention of flaunting their fantasy-inducing fairy tales, but fall short on the results with hangover-like sluggishness. For Jay-Z, arguably the greatest emcee of all time, he often ruminated on rap being boring for him and the Roc CEO forced his own hand into retirement to inspire his most recent work. But on Unfinished Business, with no clear challenge, Jay often cruises carelessly, leaving the R. to serve as the life of the party.
On "Big Chips," the lead single, it's not without noting, however, Young Hov's ability to muster a swagger when necessary. "Like old ladies at the park I toss my bread," he boasts. "And the pigeons start flocking." And "Don't Let Me Die" showcases a reflective Jay-Z reminiscent of the rapper's work on The Blueprint and The Black Album, respectively. The song is easily the finest on the album as-amid Kelly's soulful pleas-Jay poignantly asks: "How come one that made such foul mistakes/ still be allowed to have a smile on my face?"
Whereas Jay-Z is forced to rely on the ingenuity of his lyrics to succeed, Kelly can get by with melody and harmony when his writing fails him. "Feelin' You In Stereo" is the controversial singer's latest allegorical allusion for intercourse (Think "You Remind Me" and "Ignition".), and is both creepy and convincing with its lullaby-like chorus. The singer also injects liveliness into "Pretty Girls" and "Break Up (That's All We Do)," two otherwise throwaway tracks, which is a lot considering there are only 10 tracks on the entire album.
Suffice to say, it's not all Jay's fault Unfinished Business falters. It's not as if he spit any quizzical, sub par material. It's quite the opposite. After thrilling fans for years with spectacular stuff, particularly his (supposed) last album, Jay-Z played it safe this time around. To make matters worse, after hearing Jay rap over the evocative production of both Kanye West and Just Blaze for the past few years, the sonic landscape provided by Tone of the Trackmasters seems skeletal and uninspiring. Maybe for the third Best of Both Worlds installment, Jay-Z and R.Kelly should meet on a Sunday afternoon.
very average.......2005-08-08
I can't stand Jay Z, and his Generic Rapping kinda put me to sleep. R.kelly flows way Better than Jay Z.anyway this Album was very half-hearted though I dug "Feeling you in stereo&Break up to Make Up.

After dropping 1988's classic debut album, Strictly Business, doubters and playa-haters wondered whether the legendary duo of Erick "E-Double" Sermon and Parrish "PMD" Smith had anything left for a follow-up. Striking back with 1989's excellent Unfinished Business, EPMD avoided the sophomore jinx by sticking closely to their winning, bass-heavy formula. Booming "jeep-beat" production and severely laid-back drawls highlighted their career, and the formula was perfected on "So Wat Cha Sayin'" and "The Big Payback." Departing temporarily from their upbeat vibe, the duo got serious on "Jane II" and the autobiographical "Please Listen to My Demo." With an easily recognizable clutch of samples, the duo's forte was definitely in rocking parties and making heads nod. Though they tried a little too hard with uncharacteristically soft cuts such as "It's Time 2 Party" and "You Had Too Much to Drink," Unfinished Business is still a great example of hip-hop mastery that could rock dance floors, ghetto blasters, and the suburbs alike. --Hua Hsu

Never Finish Your Business.......2007-03-17
The second album from Erick and Parrish, a must own classic. Super tight with their beats and rhymes.
4 stars?.......2006-09-05
i dont know what would make any1 think its a 4 star album, its 5 stars, but u should know, the second last song is gonna be skipped every time. but its dont matter cus the last song is like 6 mins and its amazing.
My personal favorite EPMD album, 2nd classic in a row!.......2006-06-25
The Green Eyed Bandit and Mic Doc come with the old adage - "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Saying That, Erick's beats are slightly different from Strickly Business' James Brown and Roger samples. Unfinished is more 1989 than SB. Parrish Smith once again is the secret weapon and knockout punch with his wordplay, following in the footsteps of "DMC". My absolute favorite track on here is "Fame". My favorite line on Fame is:
" My father always told me to wise up son, because if you hang out with 9 broke friends you're bound to be the tenth one. So I cut friends off and P went for self, me & Erick Sermon and no one else. Strictly writing def lyrics to my best ability with the crazy imagination as my only utility. Cause MC's around my way brag how def they are, but they work full-time and sharing their mom's car."
Wise words indeed, those words inspired me then and still inspires me to get that paper and follow my own path. Thank Parrish!
The Second Of Three Straight Classics [Part 2 of 3] (5 Stars).......2006-01-05
I can't speak for anyone else, but after experiencing Strictly Business, I found myself fiendin' for more EPMD tracks. I was getting dressed to go play basketball and then I heard this ill loop resonating from my TV. And there it was.....the video for "So What Cha Sayin". At that point, the album was a must have....no questions asked. No curiousity as to whether or not they could top Strictly Business. No questioning if the product was gonna be uncut and raw. Unfinished Business had to become part of my collection. No ifs, ands, or buts. Remember, this was a time when most of the joints being dropped were straight fire, not like today where 80% of the stuff on the radio is garbage, so chances are it was gonna be dope and I had to be the first kid with the album in my class (I was 12 at the time). Here it is, 17 years later, and this album is still bangin'. Due to a crackdown on sampling and rappers being sued (like Biz Markie, Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, and many others), EPMD weren't able to use the funk and soul samples as often as they did on Strictly Business. Don't get me wrong, there are still samples on this album, but they weren't as heavy handed this time. The new sound was still totally familiar and definitely dope. The range of subject matter also makes this worth hearing. They cover topics like safe sex (Who's Booty), drunk driving (You Had Too Much To Drink), groupies (It Wasn't Me, It Was The Fame), doubters (So What Cha Sayin'), and of course there are party jams (It's Time To Party) and the typical smashing of wack MCs and a continuation of the Jane story.
As far as flaws and shortcomings, I can't think of any. I would've liked to hear more from DJ Scratch, but that's minor. This album is tight from start to finish.
I don't think there's any question that EPMD is one of the best groups ever to pick up the mic. Unfinished Business is a mus thave LP. Erick and Parrish are one of only a handful of groups to drop three straight classics (A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Organized Konfusion, BDP). If you don't have this album, get it now.
Standout Tracks: Strictly Snappin' Necks, Jane II, It Wasn't Me It Was The Fame, Total Kaos, Please Listen To My Demo, So What Cha Sayin', Knick Knack Patty Wack, The Big Payback, It's Time To Party (My Favorite), & Get The Bozack
The best follow up ever.......2005-09-08
I was hooked on EPMD after picking up "Strictly Business" after seeing the video for "you gots to chill" on Yo!, but I actually like the second album even better. "So wat Cha Sayin" is just a dope jam and "Knick Knack" is off the flibbity chain. The only think that even comes close to EPMD in the rap world is snow. I also dig the cover of this album. This pretty much could be a picture of Jabs and me, but our cars are much cooler and instead of Kango jogging suits, we'd be decked in old school baseball jerseys(probably Mark Lemke and Kelly Gruber), elegant men's evening furs and chest waders from Hodgman. I drive an H5 that I had hummer make special for me. It's the size of a footbal field and instead of painting it, I just have pictures of myself on it. EPMD runs some good smack on this CD, but I am the king of smack. At most red lights I'll point over to the driver next to me and when I get their attention, I put up a #1 finger and point to myself. I'll then point at them and give them a thumbs down. It angers some people, but the truth hurts sometimes. If average is pluto, I am the sun. That's how far from average I am.

City Life/Unfinished Business.......2007-02-20
I waited with anticipation for my cd to arrive.I'm the ''Old School'' type, who usually only spends money on music I grew up with. The Blackbyrds, who were sponsered by Donald Byrd early in their music career was that jazzy/funk flava kind of group. The hits on this disc represents their style change from the 70's to the 80's.City Life is more jazzy/funk and Unfinished Business is more dance/funk.Check out Lady and Enter In two of my favorites.YA CAN'T GO WRONG ON THIS ONE!
Help I just can notstop playing it.......2006-02-22
This was out before my time, but DANG! It is jamin, i am sure my parents was stepin to this cd. Funky, and the mellow is tight! A must have!
City Life and Unfinished Business.......2005-09-24
My personal ratings are as follows:
1. Album - City Life: Five stars
The album "City Life" is an outstanding album that I can play over and over again. It just had R&B/Dance covered before anyone! The young men were just talented - give credit where credit is due!
2. Album - Unfinished Business: Three stars
The album "Unfinished Business" in my humble opinion, is "okay." Understand me, after an album like "City Life," can anyone honestly tell me that they could top it?
Overall, a worthy collection of tunes by the Blackbyrds. Four stars!
a motherload of funky goodness!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-01-26
I don't know much about jazz but I know what I like! This comp is worth it for the 'City Life,' half, alone!!! That is one sick, brilliant, fooonkeee album. You can tell just by the plethora of of greats who have sampled it. 'Rock Creek Park,' alone (track one) has been hit up by De La Soul (for Ghetto Thang), Eric B & Rakim, Ice Cube, Massive Attack, Odb and Coolio, 2Pac, NWA and Ultramagnetic MCs- among others. Most of Donald Byrd's solo albums and the early Blackbyrds releases are simply fantastic experiences!
further reccommended (oh so highly!) is the dual set 'Blackbyrds/Flying Start,' both albums are also treasure troves of soulful ecstasy. I could kiss whoever started putting these things out, basically as twofers... the LPs aren't so easy to come by, specially where I reside...
Now- I admit my bias- I like Blackbyrds' material better than much of Mr. Byrds solo albums, but 'Places and Spaces,' 'Black Jack,'Stepping into Tomorrow are some personal faves. Byrd tends to keep himself rooted on those, which is a good thing.
Great Music.......2000-05-22
Two Great Albums For The Price Of One.Fantastic.as is The Genius Mind OF Donald Byrd&Crew.Hash&Eggs is The Jam.Happy Music Speaks Loudly here.Very Essential Music.Soul,Jazz&Funk that is All Of That&More.

a sign of perfection cut short.......2001-02-27
A fitting grab bag of this man's beautiful career. Own this recording if only for the Dutchman, even if you already have a version of this classic tune. This one stands out from other recorded versions. It's oddly downbeat, more than ever. It reduces me to tears every time. While you're at it, buy everything else this man has ever touched. It will make you a better person.
Excellent posthumous Goodman collection.......1999-11-13
Steve Goodman's strengths were'nt always apparent with his studio LPs, less was normally more. Usually Steve, his guitar, and Jethro Burns on mandolin were more than enough for a wonderful outing. Ironically, this may be his best "studio" effort; a fine, often intriguing grab-bag of unreleased studio efforts, and live odds and ends. All are quite good-to-wonderful; "Fool Such As I" is lovely, and the live "Dutchman" is definitive. Which brings up another question: Where's the rest of the tapes these pieces are all coming from? C'mon guys, release 'em already! There's certainly a market for them.

Love Her Music? Find This Album.......2007-01-27
Ronnie Spector's big throbbing, sensual voice, her instantly-recognizable tremelo and her "oo oo oo's," (borrowed from Frankie Lyman of "The Teenagers,") made her one of the greatest female rock and roll stars of her day, basically the 1960's, as lead singer of "The Ronettes. " She worked for producer Phil Spector, as is well-known, in his legendary studio. She began life, a young, half-Puerto Rican, half-American Indian girl, had that remarkable voice, was "discovered" as a dancing teenager, and, of course, married Spector, the boss. She always said that marriage was maybe her toughest gig, and recent history seems to bear her out on that.
Her voice, with its tremolo, boomed out of jukeboxes world wide, with "Be My Baby," "Baby I Love You," and "Walking In The Rain,"among other hits. She also toured with "The Beatles," and played a major part in Spector's evergreen Christmas album of 1963. She's just inescapably part of everybody's sound track of that time: A lot of people danced to her voice, and romanced to it, too. I've been lucky enough to see her several times, and will not soon forget watching the sheer joy with which a man who appeared to be African danced to her music: I think we all felt that way.
When she split with Spector, personally and professionally, and took up a solo career, it was years before her former producer allowed her to use this reportory. However, Billy Joel wrote "Say Goodbye to Hollywood, " for her, and Brian Wilson, of "The Beach Boys" did the same with "Don't Worry Baby;" both were not hits as big as they coulda/shoulda been. In this album, "Unfinished Business" she has a sexy duet with country singer Eddie Money, and does a sizzling "Dangerous" with backup by Susanna Hoffs of "The Bangles." Desmond Child and Diane Warren wrote the haunting "Love On A Rooftop" for her; Desmond Child produced. There's also a very nice "When We Danced," on which Paul Shaffer collaborated.
If you love Ronnie's music, you want this album.
One of the best rock albums ever.......2003-12-27
Ronnie Spector has been and still is one of the best female rock'n'roll performers, a fact that seems to be ignored massively by the public, though she has her followers and fans. No one else could have cut a better recording of "Say GoodBye to Hollywood", Billy Joel wrote it with her in mind, her version was ignored while he later had a hit with this song. Although her 1999 rendition of "Don't Worry Baby" (also initially written for her by Brian Wilson) keeps the fresh essence of the Beach Boys' recording, it doesn't sound dated, she manages to make it sound fresh. If you listen to her "Dangerous" CD you'll find her 1987 album "Unfinished Business" entirely included in it, with wonderful lushy power ballads, it was the sound of late 80s, which makes strange to believe that failed to chart, she also recorded a reworked (dance beat) version of Elvis' "Burnin' love" whichs sounds truly well. The leading Single was Diane Warren's "Love on a Rooftop", produced by Desmond Child. It was a fruitful period for Diane Warren, and this is one of her best songs, later recorded by Desmond Child himself and by Cher for her album "Heart of Stone" (with "If I Could Turn Back Time" as opening track) which would be the starting point for a long string of hits and a new and increasing successful time which continues today. It is used to say that nothing is predictable in music business, anyway I think that Ronnie Spector needs to find the right producer who can take the best from her and a label that takes care of publicity to get the massive popularity she once had as lead vocalist of The Ronettes. She still has the voice, that voice that got the admiration of John Lennon, Joey Ramone, George Harrison, Johnny Thunders, Brian Wilson, Eddie Money, Billy Joel, Keith Richard, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Cher and David Bowie. Could they all be wrong?
Good effort.......2003-12-11
Ronnie was the singer of the Ronettes. She used to be married to their
producer Phil Spector. This is her second solo album. It needs more than one
listen to grow on you. You also need to get used to the
Ronnie-kind-of-voice. "When we danced" is a nice ballad. "Who can sleep" is
a duet with Eddie Monie. "If I could walk away" has been covered often. The authors are people like Desmond Child and Diane
Warren. It's quite a nice album to get to know Ronnie.

Here's to the illustrious rock & roll foil! Extending from Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones to Johnny Thunders in the New York Dolls, from Mick Ralphs in Mott the Hoople to Mick Jones in the Clash, they're the lean and mean complements to preening frontmen. Dave Davies is a distinguished charter member of this soulful, somewhat thin-voiced bloc. Yes, big brother Ray Davies may have been blessed with a sharper pen and superior vocal range. But the Kinks without Dave's vehement leads and counter-punching compositional contributions? Perish the thought! Unfinished Business gathers 31 of Dave's signature songs on two discs, in the process earning the everlasting affection of Kinks kultists. Culled from solo recordings and group efforts, Unfinished Business is fleshed out with late-'90s rerecordings of DD recordings suspended in legal limbo. Surprisingly, the likes of the title track (from 1996, and featuring Dave's son Simon on drums) and the three numbers cut live at New York's Bottom Line in 1997 update this decades-spanning collection quite nicely. Dave was never really overshadowed by his brother, but with Unfinished Business he's finally properly illuminated. --Steven Stolder

The Godfather of the Powerchord.......2007-05-04
As Dave himself as often stated: "It wasn't called Heavy Metal when I invented it".
Brash,Loud and In Your Face, Dave Davies is the Pure Definition of Rock N' Roll. With his Wild Spirit and that BIG Guitar he was the Obnoxious younger Brother of a certain Raymond Davies who wrote songs and sang them in the Fab, Fave KINKS. That is not to say that Dave couid or would live in the shadow of his elder brother. His Mark of Greatness is stamped right onto the Kinks third single release, "You Really Got Me" when after those famous opening chords he goes APE$#!% during that outta-control solo midway through this classic. This one Song Defines it all, and all this is because of Dave.
That said Dave Davies Deserves his own Box Set (OF AT LEAST 4 CD'S) But in this World that might never happen so this Two-Disk Collection will have to stand in for that.
With Disk One containing 15 Tracks and Disk Two adding another 16, I will agree with the other Reviewers that is Version PAILS in comparison to the European Edition that adds 13 more selections into this Collection.
This Edition of "Unfinished Business" is a fair sampler of Dave Davies. But you will want and you NEED more of this Music.. Go for the EUROPEAN copy of this Classic
From out of the shadows, Dave Davies.......2001-05-30
For over 35 years Dave Davies has stood in his brothers shadow. While Ray has lived his musical fantasys on stage, brother Dave had to be content to stand off to the side of the stage and play flawless lead guitar. On this seminal collection, Dave shows us he could have easily led The Kinks himself. Drawing on his early work with The Kinks, such as "You Really Got Me," the acclaimed Kinks cover of "Milk Cow Blues", and "Beautiful Delilah", and his overlooked solo work, this collection proves Dave to have had an outstanding track record. Check out "Imagination's Real" from his 1980 self-titled Lp, probabaly his best solo performance. Ray is not the only Davies boy who can write great songs. Not having sold as many records as some recording artists, Dave Davies has been overlooked by many. But the final songs on this collection prove Dave to be a fine band frontman, as he delights his fans at a show in NYC. We wonder why it took Dave so long to take his solo show on the road. "Lincoln County", a rare Dave solo single from the 60's is played live to finish his joyride, a pure delight. It should be noted that "Death of a Clown", Dave's theme-song, is presented here in a new stripped down version from 1998. Like everything else here it is performed with style and class; kind of like Dave Davies himself.
Not as good as European Anthology.......1999-11-24
Due to legal matters, this double is both shorter and less authoritative than the European Anthology compilation (it includes no Kinks-era recordings from 1966-70). Being as how little of Dave's output outside of this classic time-frame is really up to much ("Imagination's Real" and "Living On A Thin Line" apart - and these both feature on the Anthology) I can't really recommend this for anyone apart from the kompletists.
We're talkin' genius here........1999-09-18
Dave's a genius and this collection will finally prove it. The thing that always amazes me about the Brothers D. is that they're never pretentious. Listen to the title track 'Unfinished Business' and you will see what I mean. For a man who's been around for over 30 years, he sure knows how to "keep it real." God save the Kinks.
Terrific summation of Dave's solo and Kinks kareer.......1999-05-19
The unappreciated younger brother. As long time Kinks fans can tell you, Dave could be the band's secret weapon. His guitar playing helped create the hard rock sound associated with heavy metal. Although not as prolific (nor as gifted) as brother Ray in terms of songwriting, Dave developed a singular voice that, at its best, could be the equal of Ray's.
Unfinished Business collects many of The Kinks key album tracks that Dave contributed to musically (either as a songwriter and/or instrumentalist-vocalist) and from his brief solo career. It's nice to see that Dave is returning to creating his own music and not just living in Ray's shadow.
The Kinks material includes re-recorded versions of songs he wrote and sang in the band (due to legal reasons, the original recordings couldn't be used). The re-recordings work well and compare to the original classics. In some cases, Dave takes an unplugged approach with these tracks brining out new nuances.
Also collected are the best tracks from Dave's three solo studio albums from the 80's. Chosen People, Dave's weakest album, is represented by a re-recording of the best song from that disc. While his first solo record is woefully under represented.
This gets 4 stars instead of five because the US release has 14 less tracks than the UK and European counterpart. It should be mentioned, however, that this disc does have tracks that don't appear on the UK version as well.

Fans hoping that a third Stone Roses album would have picked up where 'The Second Coming' left off are sure to be more satisfied with Brown's endeavors here than what Stone Roses guitarist John Squire's band The Seahorses have concocted sofar.

Ian Brown is not God, but he is very close!.......2005-07-31
I think it helps alot if you already like indie/brit rock, you will enjoy this album, it became one of my favourites very fast! my favourite tracks are corpses, deep pile dreams, cant see me, nah nah, what happened to you part 2 and my star. fookin cool, catchy, unique sounds...I recommend it.
an extremely erratic, scattershot debut solo album from the former Stone Roses vocalist.......2005-07-23
1997's "Unfinished Monkey Business" is the debut solo album from the former Stone Roses lead vocalist Ian Brown, and man, this is a damn weird album. Others have poked fun at the album title saying it's very appropriate--however, although "unfinished" isn't a bad word to describe this album overall, and even better word is "aimless".
Many of the tracks here are Brown solo 'compositions' that feature him on all instruments, and none of them fail to get you thinking, "What the hell is this?"--his instrumental skills seem rudimentary at best, his keyboard/ programmed drumming is at times hilarious, and you're left wondering what the hell he's trying to get at. The album opening "Intro Under The Paving Stones: The Beach" is a baffling sound collage. "Sunshine" is a sloppy, dull lo-fi acoustic ballad with a brief tacked-on keyboard 'coda'. "Lions" features an annoyingly, endlessly repeated chorus line and overblown "soulful" vocals from Denise Johnson, and it wasn't exactly a great idea to mix her to the far left channel while Brown's vocals are to the far right; thankfully, much of the track is instrumental, and it does have some entertainment value despite all the annoyances. "Deep Pile Dreams" is half-baked and thinly performed. The baffling instrumental title track features hilariously amateurish keyboard playing over programmed drums. My CD copy also contains a 'bonus' track called "Come Again" which is basically 7 more minutes of Brown horsing around and it makes annoying use of sampling.
As for the remaining tracks, a majority of them find Brown co-writing with Aziz Ibrahim who also handles a large chuck of the instrumental work. The Indian-flavored "My Star" has a neat little guitar solo although it's extremely brief, and the song just kinda drags along in a frustratingly aimless and repetitive fashion. The main song portion of the sludgy, hard-rocking "Ice Cold Cube" is strong with ear-catching guitarwork, but it proceeds to beat you over the head with the never-ending instrumental stuff going on, and when it finally does end, it does so in 'sudden death' fashion and annoyingly segues abruptly into "Sunshine". "What Happened To Ya Part 1" is a nice, catchy ditty with acoustic rhythm and acoustic slide guitars; it's followed by "What Happened To Ya Part 2" which is basically a lengthy instrumental jam with some voiceovers, and although it's not unlistenable and does have nice guitarwork, it reeks of filler. "Nah Nah", a Nigel Ippinson solo composition, is an acoustic guitar-based tune with a singalong chorus--it's pleasantly catchy, though it's rather slight.
With all of that out of the way, we are left with a pair of hands-down gems. "Can't See Me" finds Brown reunited with his old Stone Roses mates Mani and Reni for an infectiously funky looping groove tune--slamming beats, great Brown vocals, uncannily note-perfect lead guitar from Brown, and great lead bass guitar licks; it's a clear attempt at creating another gem along the lines of the Stone Roses' "Fools Gold", and it works big time. Then there's the mellow-yet-creepy "Corpses In Their Mouths", written by Brown and Ibrahim, with terrific moody lead guitar work and hushed Brown vocals; it does have some rather out-of-place harmonica work from Brown, but it's a minor quibble.
If you're a diehard Stone Roses fan, "Unfinished Monkey Business" is worth checking out--there are lots of intriguing ideas floating around on here, but it sure is wildly erratic and very tough to listen to all the way through.
Appropriate title.......2004-05-11
Ian Brown is by far the most creative mind out of the Stone Roses, and Unfinished Monkey Business proves it. Compared to the drab debut from John Squire's Seahorses, Monkey Business feels like a towering masterpiece continuing in the tradition of superior Manchester pop. But out of context, it just can't sit still long enough to get on your good side.
This is a shame too because if Brown wouldn't have gone crazy with the production and arrangements, it might have ended up being one of my favorite CDs. He is definetly on the right track with Corpses In Their Mouths, My Star, and What Happened To Ya? But Lions doesn't know when to end, or if it even wants to end as the artificial sounding drums just drag on making the song a uninviting tizzy as he and a female voice sing "there are no lions in England" over and over and over and over again.
The biggest achievement of this album is also the biggest folly: since Corpses In Their Mouths stands head and shoulders over so much of the material here that it makes you realize what Unfinished Monkey Business COULD'VE been like. The way that the vocal melody line of the chorus weaves in and out of the lead guitar creatives a divine sound that makes one believe that everyone ought to hear this song. Superb.
If anything, Monkey Business shows us that Ian Brown is off to a good start. He just needs to trim a few things here, develop a few sounds there, and he could be unstoppable. I haven't heard his later releases. Hopefully, that is where he went.
The Ressurection Continues...........2004-02-05
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah. This is the album that Second Coming should have been. This is the Album the Roses should have ended their career with. But fortuanely Ian Brown saved the best for himself. You hear this album compared to Second Coming or The Seahorses (Albums that John Squire contributed very heavily on) and you realize who was the talent in the band. This Album is one of the greatest solo efforts ever by an artist. It takes you on a wild ride full drum beats, electronic beats, guitars and most importantly, Ian Brown's lyrics. Lyrically this album is remaniscent of the Roses first album which is a strong relief. This is a must have in anyones collection. Pure Genius!
Not worth it.......2002-01-09
I was exploring the Paris Virgin Megastore and stumbled upon this. I thought to myself, "Well, Silmarils was good, I wonder if this is good too?" I listened and for some reason liked it. When I brought it home to California, I took another listen to it. I was confused: was this horrible thing what I listened to in the France? Well, it was and now I'm stuck with it. Maybe somebody will buy it off me. But it's got sloppy drums, sloppy vocals, the lyrics are nonsense ("There are no lions in England/No no no!") and it just frustrates me to listen to it. But if you're a fan of Ian Brown's, I suppose you may like it. I sure didn't.
