This double CD does as good a job of capturing the full-throated, shoe-tossing glory of a Patti LaBelle show as any recording could. Its success as a home-listening experience, however, is diminished by the explosive vocal runs that the singer insists on tossing into every song, whether appropriate or not. Smartly programmed, the album offers a first disc that leans heavily on LaBelle's signature pieces ("New Attitude," "You Are My Friend") and a second that pays homage to Sam Cooke ("A Change Is Gonna Come"), Ashford and Simpson (a duet with O'Jay Eddie Levert on "Is It Still Good to You"), and the Cheryl Lynn disco classic "Got to Be Real" (with another guest, Mariah Carey). Probably a must for fans but a pass for those who haven't already followed her for years. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars This Is Also on Home Video You Know.......2004-12-23

There's not too much of that unnecessary cutesy-poo note manipulation that guest star Mariah Carey is known for on this CD package. Neither Mariah nor anybody else who has come down the pike can TOUCH Patti LaBelle on what she can do with HER marvelous throat. (I'd love to see the irksome Mariah TRY though). This is actually routine Patti but it's a great opportunity to hear her in concert (or to see her if you get the MCA video). I believe this work goes back to 1998, but you may come to consider it as timeless. Patti has made a lot of cover versions of other singers' songs but she more than does justice every time. The Burt Bacharach tune made popular by Dionne Warwick in the early 60s, "Don't Make Me Over", does not suffer in the hands of the exquisite Ms. Labelle. Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" has been recorded by no less than 60 other artists or groups but none have surpassed Patti's rendition on this CD set. Go for it, I say.

I MUST SAY,PATTI WAS GREAT IN THIS CD.ORDER IT SEE FOR YOURSELF!

5 out of 5 stars A JUST GOTTA HAVE CD!!.......2001-08-14

PATTI LABELLE IS THE MOST DYNAMIC SINGER OUT THERE.SHE HAS THE MOST MAGNIFICENT VOICE I'VE EVER HEARD.I SAW HER IN CONCERT IN BALTIMORE AND WHEN SHE SANG THE SONG IN MEMORY OF HER SISTER I DON'T THINK THERE WAS A DRY EYE IN THE PLACE.THIS IS ONE CD YOU WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TOO.IT'S A MUST HAVE CD.KEEP PUTTING OUT THOSE WONDERFUL CD'S AND YOU'LL HAVE A FAN FOR LIFE!!!!

4 out of 5 stars PATTI ROCKS ON THIS ONE!.......2001-03-22

I've believed for a while now that if I was stuck on a desert island, and had only one CD set to bring along, all I'd need is Patti LaBelle's Live! One Night Only. It's as if I'll never get enough of this masterpiece of a live performance. Upon hearing the CD, I became a fan, and no one's voice in my 21 years has touched my soul the way such tracks as "You Are My Friend" and "Change is Gonna Come" have. If Patti simply released live recording after live recording for the rest of her career, I will be one happy young man. So deeply am I inspired by Patti's sheer artistry that New Year's Eve last, I chose to have my own "countdown" with Patti--with my earphones on, I welcomed to my heart Patti's "I Believe" in hopes that it would have an effect on my singing soul for the remainder of the year. It has done that tremendously. Pick this one up, and be inspired over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Live! One night Only - Patti at her best.......2000-07-22

OK this is a must have for any true Patti Fan, along with the Cd, the video is a must have. This is Patti at her best. From the breath taking opening "I believe", you know Patti is ready to give her all like only she can do. "When You Talk About Love" is just funky. "Is it still good to you" gives me the chills. "Don't make me over"- WOW!! not to mention "If You Love Me". There are some many moments on this Cd that show Patti as the true Legend she is. Her interpretation and phrasing is unique and her power is too good to be true. Although you can find better live versions of "If You Asked Me To", "New Attitude" and "On My Own" on earlier live recordings and videos, this Cd and video is a must have. Patti is one of the best entertainers and she is at her best on this recording. One can't help admire her energy, the chemistry with her fans, and her ability to take a song to new heights. When you hear her sing, you know it is from the heart and it is always done with much style and technique that most singers could only wish for. She blows every performer from Mariah to Whitney out of the water. Patti has got some serious talent and everyone should experience a Patti Labelle concert at least once.

Bad boy Vince Neil revives old Motley Crue selections and solo tunes on this 60-minute outing, recorded at his hometown haunt, the Sunset Strip's infamous Whisky. Neil's vocals are prominently featured throughout and, while his strained screaming was never the best thing about his old band, he fares surprisingly well, trying new phrasings on "Kick Start My Heart" and the lesser-known "Knock 'Em Dead Kid." While uber-guitarist/former solo bandmate Steve Stevens is missed, Neil's current lineup fares well on the likes of "Girls, Girls, Girls," "Dr. Feelgood," and the scorching closer "Live Wire." Motley Crue may represent metal's old guard, but Neil's fresh performance proves the group's veteran frontman still has plenty of energy left. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Almost as good without the "Crue"!.......2004-03-15

Since the rest of Motley Crue is too lazy now to make music we have to rely on Vince Neil to carry the torch! Let's hope he continues to do so!
This live recording of Crue songs sounds a lot better than "Entertinment or Death"-the sound is clear. Of course the drumming isnt as good as Tommy's, but the cd still rocks.
Dont ever skip a chance to see Vince live, he gives a great show.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Try To Sing, Just Go Away Cause Your So Lame!!!.......2004-02-23

Without a doubt. Vince now has officially won the title for the worst Heavy Metal singer ever. It's the same one dimensional format over and over again. Nothing new, no surprises, and no new material. Since it's a solo release, one would expect it on this release, and not 99% of it being Crue tunes. Only a idiot would try to do what Vince does here and worst he bombs at it. Pretty sad to that it's for $$$$$$ and no other reason.

2 out of 5 stars Live, one Vince Neil song only.......2003-09-06

I'm an idiot. I buy anything Motley Crue. I think Nikki Sixx could fart into a tape recorder and I'd probably pay $14.99 for it. I need help. The fact that I bought this is proof.

It's not so bad. It's basically a Motley live album, since all the songs (minus one) are Crue tunes. That's OK, but I'm sure there are lots of fans who would agree that it would have been much more exciting to get a live CD of mostly Neil solo tunes. I've got Motley live stuff. 99% of the folks who bought this CD probably do, too. Give me something different.

I read somewhere that Vince commented that there would have been more solo songs on the record, but the tapes got lost. I don't think so. I've seen Vince on every solo tour he's done, and he hasn't performed his own material in YEARS. The last time he played primarily VN songs, Steve Stevens was still in the band.

I'm going to stop writing now. I've already put more effort into my review than Vince did in this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Woods Rocks!!!.......2003-07-21

First of all, this is a great album. Like everyone else, I would have liked to hear more of Vince's solo songs, but we (the fans)must take some of the blame for this. During last year's tour it was, unfortunately, made abundantly clear to Vince that he was not garnering much fan support for his solo songs while on stage, and thus, was forced to cut most of them from the set list. This is why we are left with crue tunes instead of Vince's material.
However, I think that his performance at the Whiskey is first-rate anyway. Entertainment or Death was so poorly mixed that I can't hardly even listen to it, but this album has superb sound quality and flows much better because it is one show rather than a composite of songs from each tour.
The actual music is excellent as well. Brent Woods does an awesome job on guitar and, in my opinion, sounds as good as Mars. His solos have just enough of his own style to make them authentic, but not to much to make them off base. You get the best taste of this on the songs "Dr. Feelgood" and "Look in her eyes." And to those who use the solo on "Smokin' in the boys room" as a reason to discredit Woods, take another listen. Vince says right at the beginning of the song, "This is a song that Brent doesn't know," meaning that Woods is going to have to improv as best he can. And considering that he doesn't even have a slide, I think he does an excellent job on the solo, given the situation.
Thus, despite the fact that Vince holds back his solo material, this album is a must have for those Crueheads who have waited patiently for a high-quality live record.

4 out of 5 stars Vince Still can control a concert.......2003-06-18

Met vince at Hampton Beach a afew years back great guy concert was great . THIS ALBUM YA It could be considered a Motley Album but if the other members wont tour and give us great Crue music That doesnt mean he should stop. Vince keep it you are great !!!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15

no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

5 out of 5 stars The Return of Black 'n Blue!.......2004-12-29

The 1970's and 1980's were good times to several people, and I think not only do a lot of people miss both the 70's and 80's, but the music from the 70's and the 80's also. A lot of the music that is being released today (50 Cent, Eminem, etc) has proven to be nothing but garbage (that is, to some people) and while I do listen to some new music, I usually turn to old music because I can only find a few new artists who have proven they have talent (example, the new heavy metal band Velvet Revolver). Black 'n Blue was an 80's band, and they should have had more sucess than they did. They were pretty cool. This live album was produced by Gene Simmons, it was recorded in the late 90's, and this album came out either nine or ten years after Black 'n Blue broke up. All of the material on this album are songs that appeared on Black 'n Blue's self-titled 1984 album, "Without Love", "Nasty Nasty", and "In Heat", and one song on here, "Violent Kid", was a song that was originally first written for the first Black 'n Blue album but was never before used until this album was recorded. Unfortunately, this reunion only lasted for one night, but the Black 'n Blue greatest hits album "Ultimate Collection" and the most recent live album "Hell Yeah"(a live concert recording from 1984 that did not see the light of day until last year) are also available. If only the good old days where good music was the most popular music were still here.

5 out of 5 stars the best band you've never heard of.......2001-05-20

This cd is a breath of fresh air when compared to most of todays music. From the opening track of rockin' on heavens door all the way to the climax of I'm the king, this one rocks! I'm generally not that impressed by live recordings, but these guys really did a great job. This band never got the praise or accolades that they deserved...don't pass up this cd, you will regret it.

    5 out of 5 stars Black N Blue/The Best Unknown Secret.......2001-05-15

After years of loving every tune these guys put out, to my amazement, by the luck of Spinner.com I was able to hear the live version of their Anthem "Hold on to 18" It was great. I immediately purchased the album and cannot quit listening to it. I think I have every album now with "In Heat" being their most recent besides the live album. They continue to amaze me and I will forever love the hard driving sounds of Black N Blue.

5 out of 5 stars Long Time Coming.......2001-02-15

I enjoyed B 'N B ever since I first heard "I'll Be There For You". I wish that the record company would remaster the complete collection of Black 'N Blue. I think that this CD was very good considering that I hate live music unless I am there myself.

5 out of 5 stars Great live recording.......2000-08-22

I normally don't like the sound of "Live" recordings, but this one out does it's self. It sounds great. They put alot of enthusiasm into this cd. It has been one of my favorite new purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Long live the Queen!.......2002-09-22

In my book Patti is the Queen of Gospel Soul. She brings soul, fire and inspiration to the songs she sings. She bares her soul and offers up her voice to sing the praises of love, disappointment, hope and redemption for all. This is a must own for any serious musicc lovers.

5 out of 5 stars THE TRUE DIVA IN ALL HER GLORY.......2001-06-18

Nothing and nobody can come close to the awesome vocal power, presence and delivery that emerges from Patti LaBelle. This CD is a definate winner that will prove to be a jewel in your CD collection. This live concert recording features her greatest hits seasoned with some old cuts from her Laura Nero days with the Bluebells and also a few from her days with LaBelle. The song list contains all of her better known work from the 80's and 90's that always has the crowds to their feet when she performs them. This is by far the very best Patti LaBelle CD available.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Unselfish In Giving.......1999-07-13

A lifetime investment. I couldn't wait for this CD to be released in my country. From the first song, 'I Believe', my all time favourite right through to her sign-off, 'Over the Rainbow' (all due respect to Judy Garland), Ms Patti does it again. Highly recommended for people who appreciate some really beautiful and powerful singing. "You Are My Friend" really shines in this album. With guest appearances by Eddie and Gerald Lavertt and Mariah Carey, this album portrays the strength in this Diva's voice. "Powerhouse" Kia Kaha Ms Patti

5 out of 5 stars My husband and I danced the night away.......1999-02-01

This is a visual and audio thrill. Patti's One Night Only showed her at her best. To hear her is divine to see and hear her made us want to dance and sing to each other. Any one who loves Patti, will love this set. It is a must have young or old, in love or not.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Patti at her best. The Ultimate Diva!!!!.......1998-11-19

Patti does what she always does...., give of herself like no one else can. At age 54, she shows that she hasn't lost a step at all. She still hits the notes up in the clouds. From the beginning to the end, this CD/video is the emotional rollercoaster ride performance that Ms. LaBelle is known for. What else can I say??? There will never be another Patti!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.
