Customer Reviews:
played it non stop for weeks.......2006-02-02
I remember buying this one back in 87-88 and after about two listenings I merely thought it was ok. Then I began to hear all the different layers of bass playing and riffing and played it non stop for weeks. I will never forget the first time I played it for my drummer at the time, in my car stereo. During our trip he crouched lower and lower towards the speaker, almost falling out of the seat. "What the eff is the drummer doing?" The song was Prophecy, which has a wild intro and one of the best endings of any thrash song ever, just a maniac unpredictable pounding section which seems to be changing all the time. The record and the band was a huge influence on me, allthough I never liked the vocals. In some way I owe my current occupation with wrtiting avant-garde orchestral and chamber music to this record.
GREAT EARLY PROGRESSIVE METAL.......2005-10-11
this came out originally at the tail-end of the thrash era and just before death metal more or less took over.not quite as "math metal" as Watchtower, nor Sci-Fi as Voivod i felt they had their own sound.the H. P. Lovecraft theme to this disc i always enjoyed,in fact conveyed a certain "lovecraftian" feel to several of the songs.
but wether you get the Lovecraft references or not,if you appreciate "thinking" man's metal like the aforementioned and others like Atheist,Anacrusis,Cynic,Death, etc you will love this!
Out of left field..........2005-08-16
This came out in 1988 and almost defined technical thrash (along with Watchtower perhaps). Virtuouso progressive riffs that just didn't sound like they belonged in a thrash metal song, complex fast drumming that was ahead of its time and a dischordant, wierd-ass, manic feel to it all. I remember my ideas of what to expect from music being challenged listening to this for the first time.
Age of Agony is a reasonably straight forward (relatively speaking) fast thrash, True Lies has one of the most interesting riffs I've heard along with some challenging chromatics and fast drumming with many time changes. Confessions of Madness is more stright ahead medium pacer with a cracking thrash section with solos at the end. Hatred is a difficult one, absolutely manic and hard to listen to. Interludium is a masterpiece incorporating a real quartet or orchestra with crunchy guitars (interesting idea back in 1988!). Prophecy is another fast one which cracks from the start but sorta loses its way (only a bit). Memories of Tomorrow is one of my faves, pretty much perfect melodic techno mid pacer. I King Will Come is sloooow, i remember thinking it must have been slowed down in the studio when I first heard it, but it's not, it's deliberately played slower for effect, brilliant. The Final Deluge finished with a flurry of solos from both guitars and bass, it cranks. The last two songs are exactly what they say, epilogues of the quiter atmospheric type.
The things that let this album down are some strained off-key vocals, a good sound, but without the decent bottom end the first album had, and a couple of moments that don't work. But if you wanna hear some riffs that you may never have heard before, some great technical thrashy solos, bass solos and some really challenging music then check it out.
Voivodish.......2002-07-23
Only two things i have ever heard close to this album are Voivod Killing Technology and Anacrusis Screams and Whispers so if you dig those albums you might dig this

Customer Reviews:
Very strange thrash.......2006-05-09
MKD has got to be one of the most strangest thrash bands I've ever came across with.
Just try looking at the album art!
But likewise, I'm truly grateful. Their music is long, complex, thoughtful and very very very very precise. Most bands can't even formulate decent riffs even if their asses depended on it. But MKD shatters the mold.
If you want to further expand your knowledge of thrash than this is not a bad place to begin with. I'm actually surprised on how good this album turned out to be.
Strange, but satisfying. ^_^

Customer Reviews:
Progressive to the hilt.......2006-04-12
This is probably Mekong Delta's thrashiest catchiest album, and their best. The vocals are aggressive and melodic, the riffs are wrist-numbingly technical, and the compositions of the songs leave your hair spinning and your heart pumping. My favorite part: the drumming. The drummer has a unique way of switching up the standard thrash beat where he goes from a bass drum on 1 snare on 2 to just the opposite. Not that its so unusual, but the way he does it throws you for loop and makes the already exciting music thrilling. This album was actually a cause for a fender bender I got into while I was headbanging. I know, I know, you shouldn't be headbanging while your driving, but sometimes you can't help yourself. Especially when Parasite starts pumpin' out your speaker.
I don't believe you

PARASITES!!!

excellent technical/neoclassical thrash.......2000-08-01
Mekong Delta has been strangely underrated given their status as progenitors of the technical thrash movement of 1987-1992, releasing their debut album in 1987 (yes, before "And Justice for All"). They combine rhythmic complexity with melodies drawn from the Late Romantic period of classical, particularly from Mussorgsky. "Dances of Death," in my view Mekong Delta's best album, contains a rendition of Mussorgsky's "Night on Bare Mountain." This is crazy, quirky stuff, still with a lot of hooks. Songs like "True Believer" and "Parasite" will catch your ear immediately.
most powerful and intelligent metal.......2000-07-14
this group is from Gemany. I can find it's mp3 files in the cyberspace. and there's much recommandation for it. I think that the musics in this album is very difficult to understand. the prasing is too complicate for beginner. but this will cannot be problem. because this album is good enough and rare. maybe only 'watchtower' can overwhelm it's progression.

MEKONG DELTA - VISION FUGITIVES.......2003-02-07
I am a very picky and selective individual after being into the METAL scene for 25 years so I am pretty jaded. HENCE, I found this disc to be a very nice listen and worthy addition to my collection.
This band is technical, symphonic and well orchestrated. The vocals are a bit sunken into the production mix but gives an atmospheric feel to it. But overall, I was into this disc and I recommend other metalheads to give this disc a try if you are into thrash, technicality and classical symphonic orchestrations.

Largely unimpressive.......2005-11-24
Don't expect any of the flamboyant thrash of their early work with this release. The notes of Promenade, which get repeated at each of the interludium tracks, sound like a first time guitar player practicing, painful. In fact, the sound is a little bit like it hasa been recorded at home.
On the other hand, Gnomus, Bydtlo, Samuel, Limoges, Hut and Heroic Gate are worthy progressive instrumental pieces.
The orchestrated versions are pretty bad, as it's all synth stuff.
Worth a listen or if you find it on special.
Brilliant ending of a brilliant career?.......2001-10-10
For almost a decade Mekong Delta impressed its audience with its unique blend of thrash metal, prog-rock and interpretations of classical pieces. They started to play parts of 'Pictures' on their first (self-titled) album - then they played The Hut Of Baba Yaga (The Hut On Chicken's Legs). Other 'Picture' - 'The Gnome' - was issued on same-titled single, later re-issued as a bonus track on both 'Music Of Erich Zann' and 'Dances Of Death'. On 'Dances' they played other epic piece by Mussorgski - 'Night On A Bare Mountain'.
Pictures At An Excibition was composed for piano in 1874 by Modest Mussorgski. Later it was arranged for orchestra by Maurice Ravel. In 1996 Mekong Delta decided to put together the complete Pictures, and arrange it for rock group, AND for group and orchestra. This time, they toned down their sound, and both pieces they recorded earlier - Gnomus and Hut - sound a lot less thrashier, and much closer to Ravel's arrangement.
As always, the album features excellent guitar work by Uwe Baltrusch and unique bassplaying by Ralf Hubert. Drum work by Peter Haas suits the music well, but I miss the style of Jorg Michael here (he played on Mekong Delta early albums).
This is not the first time when a rock group tries to play Pictures. There was also an attempt by ELP in 1976 (exactly 20 years earlier!), but they added too much "rock'n'roll feeling" to it - and vocals! Mekong Delta tried to stay free from such influences - they tried to preserve the original spirit of the music, and just used other instruments to express it. And I can say they absolutely succeeded!
All Mekong Delta albums progressed towards this release. An unfortunate outcome of this is that it turned to be their last album. Though not officially split, they've not released anything since then. I hope to be mistaken about that.
A bold undertaking...........2001-04-25
To fully transcribe and perform Mussorgsky's classical masterpiece "Pictures at an exhibition" in a rock setting is a achievement in it self, but Mekong Delta pulls it off nicely! ELP has also done a version of "Pictures...", but this is far better; less rock'n'roll-ish, and more symphonic sounding... (..and without vocals, offcause!)
There's two versions of the entire "Pictures at an exhibition" on the CD; one with, and one without orchestral keyboards simulating the string arrangements, and personally I prefer the former, more simplistic version.
The production-values has also got to be mentioned, because the CD sounds absolutely brilliant; everything sounds bright, natural, dynamic and "open-ended". Definetly a joy to listen to if you are a fan of both avantgarde-rock and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an exhibition"...
