Editorial Reviews

Combining the stop-start rhythms of Helmet, the hip-hop assault of Rage Against the Machine and the brooding vocals of Faith No More, Bakersfield, California band Korn concocted a golden formula that would reanimate the dormant corpse of heavy metal. The band's self-titled debut is a teenage-fantasy-endorphin-rush--a subversive noisefest as angry and hostile as Slayer but with a propulsive groove perfect for skateboarding, vandalism, or jumping up and down until you're nauseous. Songs like "Blind," "Clown," and "Shoots and Ladders" blend dark, bleak riffs with head-spinning guitar effects and scream-and-response choruses. But even at their most vitriolic, Korn imbue their blustery music with a cathartic element of fun. --Jon Wiederhorn

Losing their edge?.......2007-08-03
Just like everyone else...this album is ayyyight. Nothing new here folks and with Head out of the band and David taking a break...the band is really losing their steam. Here the songs are okay, its good to listen while you're driving but Jon Davis and whatevers left of the crew seem kinda tired. Not to mention now that they're all in their 30's with a family its kinda hard to relate to Jon's lyrics like the good old days. TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR still remains as the worst album they put out. This one is a just a step above it. the KORN i once knew and loved is dead. Say hello to the new "I don't give a sh** anymore!" KORN. This album defintely felt sloppy. But its still a good listen when you want to kill some time.
When Keeping it Real...goes wrong........2007-08-03
Who could've figured that Korn's opening lines to their debut album, "Are You Ready?" would foreshadow for what was to come for their 8th untitled album. Korn has never been a stranger to experimentation from the concept driven Issues to the chorus filled synth tinged Untouchables, they've still somehow always managed to keep a signature sound. The appropriately titled untitled album really shows the band trying to do something new. Unfortunately, this is just another example of when keeping it real goes wrong.
From the online preview of "I Will Protect You" and the lead single "Evolution", I had my fears over what exactly Korn was trying to accomplish. On the Untitled, Korn is too progressive to have signature anthems or catchy choruses, yet it isn't progressive enough to join the ranks of something like The Mars Volta or say Tool. The energy for the most part is absent throughout the album. Its disappointing considering there are some really songs that shine like the pounding "Killing" and "Hold On". The pacing of the album is also something that is really lacking. Korn has always had the ability to pace their albums perfectly. In the middle of the album, the record just drags due to Kiss, Do What They Say, and Ever Be all being around the same mid tempo pace (excluding Ever Be's ending). In fact, dragging would be a perfect one word review for the album.
As a band, the results are very mixed. On one hand, this album does feature Fieldy's finest work yet as a bassist. On the album's more funkier songs, Fieldy's bass playing isn't just slapping and really shows he is on top of his game for this album. This could be due to the addition of Terry Bozzio who adds a real jazzy presence to the album. Terry really shines throughout the album but at times overshines the band. Because of this, Munky really seems like the weak link of the group. His guitar riffs are for the most part pretty bland and not very energetic. Is it just me or does Innocent Bystander's intro straight from the bridge of "Getting Off" from See You on the Other Side. I've always enjoyed Munky's effects use, but I can honestly say I was bored stiff with his effort here. Last but certainly not least, Jonathan's performance is varied shifting from the whiney and unnecessary "B*tch, We Got a Problem" to the emotional "Starting Over". It shows that he is trying to do more with his vocals but i've been more intrigued with previouis efforts.
I want to like this album, I really do. However, I find the album's title to be very similar to the album's sound as a whole. You just don't know how to label it because it seems like a lot of mush. After their Unplugged performance *which was always a lot of hit and miss*, Korn really wanted to aim high for this release. In doing so, they've abandoned a lot of what they stood for. I'm not one of those Korn kids begging for another raw outing like the debut. I just ask that Korn be...Korn.
P.S.
Insert any title you would like to describe the album:
Kreamed Korn
Popped Korn
Korn, We've Got a Problem
4.5 stars.......2007-08-02
Korn have been one of my favourite bands for quite some time now. Perhaps they do not mean as much personally to me. I love them more for their origionality and how the fearlessly experiment in their music. This is no exception.
If you are looking for anything like their debut, then look somewhere else. This is probably korn's lightest album to date, however the mind drawing riffs, the hip hop influenced beats and Davis's haunting vocals that almost mock the simple melody he is singing makes the album distinctively their own.
After the intro, Starting over immediately draws you in with its catchy chorus, and is a good demonstrtion of where the album is going because the catchieness, and industrial style gets more extreme in "Bith we got a problem". The choruses are what really makes the album so effective.
Even if you have not already bought the album the single "Evolotion" is probably still in your head. The same is done most notably on "kiss" and "Ever be" While some will call this annoying and label them as commercial sellouts, you can tell just by the lyrics that Korn are still so much more than this.
It also struck me that as korn do not sound as heavy any more, can they still be called nu metal? or are they more of a funk rock band now? As a fan of the Red hot chili peppers, this does not bother me, but as said before, metalheads will not be impressed. However, if you listen with an open mind, you will see that this album does show the talent and raw emotion that Korn have always possessed
very good album.......2007-08-02
This album has to grow on you. When I first listened to it for the first time I wanted to throw it away and forget about it but after listening to it some more it started to grow on me and now i like it very much. so give it a try it wont dissapoint you
How can anyone rate this 4 or 5?.......2007-08-02
I couldn't wait to get this after reading the preview that stated this was the heaviest korn to date by one of the band members. This was the first time I can honestly say that I wasted money on music. I never thought it could be this terrible. The SYOTOS album took a bit of getting used to, but still it was tollerable once you listened to it a few times. On every song it seemed to start out dull and about mid song, just when I thought they were going to pick up, they just stayed the same. I have every Korn song out there, not just holding onto the past, this really sucked!

Korn fans beware!.......2007-08-03
This is not the normal korn stile of music!
This is a more melodic stile not that different from the later tracks on See You On the Other Side, but sadly there is no heavy song on this CD
Personally I like this side of korn, but those of you who think that "Korn" and "Untouchables" were the best, will be dissappointed if you are expecting another head bashing scream happy CD
Hopefully this will help you before buying.
It's experimental. It's weird. And it's GREAT!.......2007-08-03
I've always favored KoRn's more experimental music over their aggressive, but in the right combination, like on UNTOUCHABLES and TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR, it works quite well. Now I can add this untitled release (really, is it OFFICIALLY called "untitled?") to the above sentence.
Otherworldly effects, strange beats and melodies, more singing and less gibberish - yet underlying it all, a sound that is undeniably KoRn. Much like the warped creatures and beings which haunt the artwork accompanying this album (take THAT, downloaders!), this album is still recognizeable as the KoRn that we "later stuff" lovers have always worshipped.
Fans of "their old stuff" might not like this, but then such people are probably too close-minded to see the doughnut surrounding the hole. This is KoRn at their most experimental to date, and it is a fine release indeed.
The Evolution Of Korn.......2007-08-03
There could be many reasons why Korn left their eight studio album untitled. Could it be that they were short on time and wanted to get this thing out as quickly as possible? Is it supposed to mark a new beginning, with only three original members left and a slew of session musicians rounding out the line-up? Or could it just be due to the fact that "Untitled" is Korn's most ambiguous and experimental album to date? I'll go with the third.
So what's Korn up to this year? Why are they rushing an album out with yet another band member (this time around, it's drummer David Silveria) taken out of the equation? Well, even if it probably was too soon for a new Korn album, it can't be denied that what they have laid down is easily home to the best material they have done since the turn of the century. At some point, we're all going to have to come to terms with the fact that Korn sort of lost it years ago. The delivery by frontman Jonathan Davis has felt forced for quite some years, and the band has either had a fair share of botched experiments or has just been going through the motions. Granted, "Untouchables," "Take A Look In The Mirror" and "See You On The Other Side" are all fine albums, but each fell short of expectations and only assisted in making the band look tired and out of date. With only three members left, who would have guessed they would have turned this thing around? Inviting touring keyboardist Zac Baird into the recording studio, and jamming with the legendary Terry Bozzio and Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) on drums, what remains of Korn have turned out their most satisfying album since their creative and commercial pinnacle in the late 90's.
"Untitled" brings to mind the energy and experimentation of the breakthrough album, "Follow The Leader." What the listener expects to hear is completely shattered here. Witness "B----, We Got A Problem," the song "Twisted Transistor" should have been, easily the catchiest and most infectious Korn tune since "Got The Life." Producer Atticus Ross, who worked on the last album, has returned to help Korn beef up their electronic repoitre, and instead of sounding like re-heated Nine Inch Nails, like a good chunk of "See You On The Other Side" sounded, the experiments are more refined and sound more natural here. "Kiss" starts off rather minimally, going down a predictable route, until the three minute mark when the band digs into some late-Beatles psychedelia. Elsewhere, the band stretches it's genre and limitations, as on "Killing," perhaps the thrashiest Korn song ever, and featuring a death metal inspired bridge, without sounding cheesy or forced. Along with experimentation, we are treated to Jonathan's most honest and emotional delivery in a long time. "Starting Over" and "I Will Protect You" (arguably the best song on the album, which truly shows off the work of Bozzio) both revolve around Jonathan's new obsession with death and leaving his loved ones behind, and it's a powerful message that goes beyond the usual angsty fodder of Korn's past, as something everyone can relate to.
Now, to be honest and fair, this is not a perfect album. Had they shortened it down to only ten songs and left off what didn't work, they'd have yielded better results. "Do What They Say" and "Innocent Bystander" are two songs that just don't work and only serve to slow down the progression of the album. What could have been two of the best songs on the album -- "Ever Be" and "Love & Luxury" -- are marred by their tired lyrical content, focusing on ex-guitarist Brian "Head" Welch and his beliefs. This is really something they should have gotten out of their system on "See You On The Other Side," and only makes it seem like they are running out of ideas and things to say. Regardless of the few flaws, it's still one of the most dynamic and intriguing entries in the Korn catalogue. Korn purists might find it difficult to swallow, but the fan who wants more from their band might walk away happy. It's just too bad that they couldn't work it out with Terry Bozzio, who really pushes this album to the level it's at. More Korn & Bozzio would be a great thing. If you're picking up the deluxe edition, you'll get a DVD that documents the making of the album quite well, and shows off just how insane Bozzio's methods are, and gives a bit of insight into the why's and how's of the album. Also, you get a coupon for a free shirt, a fold-out poster, and individual cards featuring high concept art of Jonathan, Munky and Fieldy. Aside from the DVD, it's all really just fluff, but it's worth it for the glimpse inside the studio for this one.
wow i hate amazon.......2007-08-02
well here it is i think this album rocks being a huge fan i guess i would but it really is likeable. second i HATE AMAZON! i preordered this album and look two days later i still dont have it. i had to download it because i couldent wait for amazon to send it. that off my chest back to the review the album has this really trippy sound wich i like some lyrics are very catchy overall i fell this album has a much better lasting appeal that syotos. favorite tracks evolution, [...] we got a problem, killing, and innocent bystander. ive been with korn since day one and will continue to truge the long haul! GOOOO KORN!
Korn's new sound is authentic and here to stay.......2007-08-01
It gets a little old hearing people comparing Korn's new music to their old stuff. Korn have said that in losing 2 members (only 1 perminant), they have changed as a band and in this the music they create. I have been a Korn fan for 10 years now and I have never been disappointed, and I can say this with "Untitled." This new sound is heavier than 2005's See You on the Other Side and resembles 2002's Untouchables. I can listen to this entire album with only skipping one track (Do What They Say). It isn't a horible song, I just don't care for it. Overall, if you are a Korn fan pick this Limited Edition up if you can (it is sold out in most retail stores). Die hard Korn fans should love this album and I cannot wait to see these guys in Orlando.

Korn has made a career out of playing loud, angry rock & roll--loud and angry enough that placing the band in the unplugged setting has, until now, seemed unthinkable. But the risk has more or less paid off. Tracks such as "Blind" and "Hollow Life" work best in this new context--each filled with a sense of drama but not melodrama, their essential emotional weight is given new heft by opting for intense calm rather than an epic--and overwrought--musical maelstrom. Others, such as "Twisted Transistor" teeter on self-parody; a guest turn from Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee for "Freak on a Leash" is inspired, one from the Cure for "Make Me Bad/In Between Days" doesn't quite live up to its promise on paper. But the band's reading of Radiohead's "Creep" is heartfelt and true, making this unplugged endeavor worthwhile and truly entertaining.--Jedd Beaudoin

WTF.......2007-06-17
OMG! I just couldn't imagine it when i heard there was going to be a korn unplugged. This junk is horrible! Korn is one the worlds greatest bands, but still, unplugged, i can't listen to one word, it sucks so much!
INSANLY GREAT KORN CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-12
Korn - Unplugged MTV Korn unplugged is rock but without amplifiers and added orchestra, band, piano and other instruments to make it sound not so hardcore. It's basically a hard rock band turned into a soft rock band. Famous songs on this cd are Freak on a leash, Twisted Transistor and Coming Undone. On this Cd, Korn featured Amy Lee in Freak on a Leash. I think Korn Unplugged is a great Cd. I like the fact that I can listen to them either hardcore or mellow with some good piano and soft instruments. Korn sounds great both ways. I recommend this to a korn freak or just someone who knows of Korn and is tired of listening to loud music and can't comprehend the lyrics. This cd would be great for them. It is easy to follow the words and it gives off a great sound. Recommended to every type of rock lover.
I loved it- it sucks!.......2007-06-11
This could have been one of the best unplugged/acoustic albums ever made... could have.
This album has one of the most interesting and heartfelt covers of Radiohead's Creep that I've ever heard. This album, from a band that probably never crossed your mind as someone who could do anything acoustic, ever. With special guests on cellos, guitars, harps, bongos, and special gust vocalists like Amy Lee from Evanescence, and a duet with The Cure! And it's all worthless because it's censored.
If you're a die hard Korn fan, you've got to have this for your collection, which is unfortunate.
You Must Buy Korn MTV Unplugged!.......2007-06-03
Korn has really put together a great CD that adds a new artistic dimension to their music. The creativity and imagination behind the music are incredible, I was addicted to it from the moment I heard it. The artists they selected to perform with them also contributed a great deal to this creativity. Their sound was not sacrificed by the tempo changes. The only thing I dislike about MTV Unplugged arrangements is the censorship. I like my music to contain all aspects of its creativity. It's like pasting clothes over a nude painting-- what's the point? Just let art be art... bad words and all. Overall, I would definitely recommend adding this CD to your Korn collection.
Worst thing I've heard in a while..........2007-05-24
This cd is horrible. Kudos to the creative aspect, but Davis is NOT A GOOD SINGER by any means. Some vocalists can pull a stunt like this off, but not J.D. He desparately needs his studio recording technology to cover up his incredibly bad vocals. The cover of Creep is such an injustice to Radiohead, Davis just sings it pitchy and shaky like an amateur teen on karaoke night. Sorry, he can't pull off an acoustic set. Invest your money in a good band like Symphony X or Dream Theater!

Finally gave in...and I do like it!.......2007-07-14
Korn is not a band I have any other music from, but I did like many of thier "hits" or songs on the radio back in the day (which is as it turns out, not so long ago). Something about the hip-hop hard rock sound, and that whatever you call it...clicking bass sound just got to me eventually, and I found myself cranking their songs.
I am into bands like Corrosion Of Conformity, Helmet, Biohazard, Prong; plus I love the rap/rock that surfaced in the late 80's and seemed to flourish in the early 90's, from the aforementioned Biohazard, and Rage Against The Machine; and Korn seemed to draw some from those types of bands and blend it all together and it worked for the most part. Probably the worst thing that happened was getting that stupid "nu metal" tag, I hate that just about as much as the "hair metal" tag. C'mon, ya know?...it's just hard rock music that has a certain sound or feel, why does it have to have a label on it all the time? Perhaps it's not Metal, but it deserves a better name than Nu Metal, that was just being lazy.
Anyway, most of the songs on here I like. I can't help but repeat the "Ya'll Want A Single" chorus over and over, and of course all the hits that follow are very convenient for a casual fan like myself of the band and just wants to enjoy thier fine music.
It's finally over for these guys! 0/5 stars.......2007-06-12
This mallcore mediocre imitation metal band finally released a greatist hit's album Oh yeah I knew these guys were not gonna stick around for long. They were the worst talentless band I ever heard and a massive disgrace to real metal bands like iron maiden helloween slayer white zombie pantera judas priest motorhead. All their songs are garbage and all their music playing and vocals were completely horrible and unrelying they all smack a rush job on every song. I'm no expert in metal but I know there is no way korn can be called metal and there are lot's of other bands (including nu metal) that are alot better than korn. Korn is just an obnoxious fad like limp bizkit which now and days is completely forgotten by exfans like me. And thanks to head who found jesus and left... korn is finally dead that is a miracle no bands in their right mind would do that and im the exfan who found my true taste in music and left korn also.
Just okay.......2007-06-02
Korn has had their occasional hit here and there. While this is probably the best Korn has to offer, it's just okay music (in my opinion, of course). The cover of "Word Up" is nothing short of genius, but I wasn't impressed with Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall". Floyd is one of those bands that are too sacred to turn into nu metal.
Loved it.......2007-05-29

On its seventh album--and first without founding member Brian "Head" Welch--Korn makes a few changes and gets on with proving that it's still a viable force within the world of heavy rock. The venerable veterans lean on outside help from the songwriting team of the Matrix and producer Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails). The end result is that this is a big change for Korn and one that will garner large shares of message board controversy on wether this album is more industrial than nü. The band is at its deftest on "Getting Off," "Politics" and "Coming Undone," which highlight the industrial bend. Stalwart fans need not worry for "Liar" and "For No One" remain in lock-step with classic Korn. One need not listen to the full hour-plus to discover flaws. Its center becomes weighed down with bland mid-tempo numbers and the final song detracts from the powerhouse close the record might have had they ended with "Interlude #3/I've Seen It All." Still, Korn has demonstrated that it's capable of weathering the storm and emerging with an album that will carry them onward. -- Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
With such daring new songs as "Twisted Transistor," "Politics," and "Love Song" among others, it's clear that KoRn--Jonathan Davis, James "Munky" Shaffer, Fieldy and David Silveria--have opened the doors to even more creativity and disarray. And no one does "disarray" like KoRn. The result is the most revolutionary KoRn album since their debut, a barb-wired, bastard son of blinding musical fury, dark and twisted lyrical candor, and searing, sociopathic tendencies. It's the culmination of everything KoRn have come to represent musically, morphed with an industrial-strength alter ego that's been suppressed--until now. "See You On The Other Side" is more than the evolution of KoRn--it's an evolution of heavy.

Shucked Korn......is all they are now.......2007-07-21
Whenever I was in junior high in like 94 these guys owned the metal scene. Their music was very original All the poser kids wore the korn hoodies and everything addidas and pretended to be all mad and hard and emotionally distrought, but their parents were rich doctors and stuff like that, but it was a fun time. Their music was energetic and raw. Hell, I even used to listen to Daddy in my room with the lights turned off, cause I thought it was evil sounding and scary, but then again I was like 12. So now I'm 25 and they just don't do it for me anymore. This album is TERRIBLE!!! I use it as a coaster for my coffee table, it matches my couch. When issues came around I heard the beginning of the end. Why did they have to go and experiment with rapid pads and all those other computer generated annoying sounds? It seemed like the more weight Johnathan Davis gained, the worse their music got.
excellent album.......2007-06-04
Despite missing a guitarist this album is suprisingly good. Each song is good. Now that the drummer is also on hiatus it might be time for Korn to pull the plug instead of milking the cow until theres nothing left.
The weak link in the Korn music catalog........2007-05-31
"Twisted Transistor" is kind of a cool song, and there are a handful of other songs on here that are pretty good, like "Coming Undone", "Politics", and "Souvenier", but I don't know if I like this stripped down, industrial sound that they have tried on. It has some moments, but overall, I was unimpressed with it. Stick to earlier Korn if you are just discovering them, and if you buy it, plan on being surprised by the new musical direction.

Korn's changing, but they still good.......2007-03-23
I thought the album was alright. I kind of preffer their other styles, but this album was alright. It's just that usually bands change and start to burn out a tad, and it's not always easy to keep up with facinating ideas, so I still give them credit. It seems that every album they have realeased has been good. Not all bands are like that, usually they'll run out ideas and change terribly, not Korn! SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE doesn't suck, it's just simply not there best album that's all. I liked twisted transister, hypocrits, souvenere, coming undone, and liar.

Love 'em or despise 'em, you've got to give Korn props for kick-starting a new metal movement that blends aggressive hip-hop rhythms with roaring hate-metal riffs. In the wake of the band's 1994 debut, many like-minded groups cropped up, including Deftones, Snot, and Limp Bizkit. But with the release of Korn's disappointing 1996 sophomore effort, Life Is Peachy, the imitators seemed likely to usurp the innovators. Maybe that's why Follow the Leader is so crafty and inspired. Instead of continuing on cruise control, Korn have diversified their formula, experimenting with mood and dynamics while intensifying their melody and noise thresholds. "Got the Life" blends a seductive disco beat and vocals reminiscent of "Epic"-era Faith No More with oppressive guitar chimes and squawks. "Children of the Korn" features a propulsive rap beat, throbbing bass lines, and angry guest vocals by Ice Cube. But just when Korn's groovin' psychedelic fury starts to make listeners see red, the band lashes out with "All in the Family," a hilarious rap-metal diss-fest duet with Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, that proves Korn are much more than the sum of their rage. --Jon Wiederhorn

Korn's masterpiece, and most successful album........2007-05-15
Back in the mid-to-late 90s, Korn was the coolest heavy band around. They have lost plenty of that popularity lately, as many think of them as sell-outs, or other kids are just trying to be cool, saying they only like death metal and everything else sucks.
Korn has gotten more experimental lately, with Issues, Untouchables, and See You On The Other Side being less heavy and trying new things. Fans have been lost, but I see Korn as one of the most important heavy bands in the history of music. They opened a lot of doors and helped to make metal popular again. And, despite what many may think, I appreciate their music in all stages of their career. It shows growth and keeps things fresh and interesting. Some albums have been better than others, sure, but none have been bad. Follow the Leader is a defining moment in their careers and features many of their best songs. It is loud, angry, catchy, and fun.

Their Best Album.......2007-04-06
It's funny, KoRn's best album is dissed a lot. I got this and I can't stand Ice Box's (or whatever the hell his name is) little rap song. I wonder if Fred Durst knows that it should be illegal for him to "rap". So now that is out of my system, this album is pretty damn good. I really don't like Nu-Metal (Thrash/Death Metal all the way) but KoRn put out a good Nu-Metal album. I don't know why they put 12 tracks of 5 seconds of silence though. I just deleted that of my iPod.
The Best!.......2007-03-19
I falled in love with Korn when i first listened to 'Freak On A Leash' song. But when i listened the whole album, i felt like this is it. This is what i'm looking for in music. Totally out of this world of music type. Full of energy and 'music'.

This isn't Metal........2007-08-01
You call thios metal? I only like one album by Korn and that's because of the silence before the songs even begin and Freak on a leash. other than that this band sucks. The only good Nu-metal band out there is Slipknot. If oyu want real Metal listen to Death, Thrash, Black, Grindcore, or even one of the few good Metalcore bands *coughcough Lamb Of God*.
BS totally only rated it a 1 -cuz there was no zero.......2007-07-31
I hate Korn. Love the vegetable-hate the band. No, Korn were not the first metal band with down tuned guitars. Does anyone remember Black Sabbath? Yeah, I think they beat Korn to the punch with the down tuned riffs.
Quite frankly, I think of Korn as what you find floating in the toilet bowl the day after Thanksgiving. Oh yeah-and I'm from the Bakersfield area and I don't claim them.
Korn are weak.
One of the most influential records of the 90s........2007-05-31
When this came out in '94, it was the most fresh-sounding heavy music that anyone had heard in years. Korn helped usher in the nu-metal genre, which had more misses than hits over the years, but still produced some excellent bands that have helped popularize heavy music again. This is now a classic cd with great songs like, "Blind", "Clown", "Divine", "Faget", "Shoots and Ladders" and many more. It packs a punch and an emotional wallop. One of the best heavy cds of the 90s. Give them a try. Don't listen to the haters, because most don't have a open mind to anything except death metal or "Slayer" or something similar. Korn is a great band who have been very successful and keep making fun, different sounding records.
Greatest emotional outpouring ever recorded.......2007-05-06
I'm not saying this is one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. But Jonathan Davis' agonizing memories and angst that guide each verse are unparalleled on the pain scale. He is a true artist, and this was his real cleansing of his troubled soul.
Almost all young people deal with pain growing up and Korn's music is one way for them to escape from it momentarily. It's easy to connect with his intensity, and his immense pain seems to swallow any problems you might have.
But just because this group has garnered a youthful following, this is not innocent popcorn rock. Most youngsters can't fathom the hard times Jonathan endured growing up. He scatters pieces of it around for you to pickup, and he genuinely hopes it helps kids cope.
Every song on here is laced with cutting, abrasive guitars that are intertwined with desperate screams that really create an overwhelming energy.
The greatest start to an album ever, a hollow, guttural question pierces the airwaves..."Are you ready"? accompanied with pounding guitar riffs and drum beats that drone in and out as they echo within an eerie sort of emptiness, sounding like a concert in a cave. The song is of course called Blind, and it still is a favorite track amongst all the great Korn tunes. There is a sense of broken down hopelessness in the lyrics.
This feeling is apparent in many of the songs. The rage and frustration just comes barreling out in many songs like Faget. Shoots and Ladders might raise some eyebrows on the true meaning or message of some nursery rhymes.
This debut album ends with the most horrific, painstakingly brutal song ever, Daddy. Hatred and tears really fuel this song. It will make you uncomfortable, you'll be hoping it is contrived. But, like every song on here, it is very real, raw, and emotional.
A break-thru that spawned one of the worst music genres ever.......2007-04-04
Let us not forget what the rabid success of Korn created. The worst music genre in history, NU-Metal. However, when this self titled album came out, in 1994, there was no other bands doing this. This was highly original.
Don't get it twisted though, Korn did not invent NU-Metal, they only spearheaded the movement. Faith No More was the creates of this sad, sad genre. Korn actually takes a lot of elements from Faith No More, among other bands.
I remember when I first saw this album, I was intrigued by the cover, it was creepy an dirty, it reeked of something sinister. The cover screams "stolen innocence". I decided to give it a chance. Boy, was it worth it! The music on here is unlike anything ever! EVER! There was no other band like this! They combined heavy guitars that were massively groov oriented yet able to provide speaky and odd sounds on the whim, deep thumpy bass guitar, drum beats that were a mix of metal and hip hop, and a singer that had dreadlocks who growled, screamed, chanted and made other strange noises and wore adidas track suits.
The music was metal, yet they incorporated a sweet start/stop element, sort of like Helmet and a tight semi-hip hop flavor.
The musicianship is also top notch, for a NU-Metal band. The drummer was amazing, striking the perfect balance between double bass, rolling snares, high hats and other drum accents. He also incorporates an electric drum for really low bass hits, its awesome. The beats ranged from a mix of metal/hip hop and hardcore. Fieldy's bass lines were hip hop goove oriented with a little nifty trick regarding faux pas slapping of the strings to produce a clicking effect. Munkey and Head brandished 7 string drop D tuned guitars and either lashed out with powerful power chords or created the oddest and most intricate alien sounds. Many of guitar parts on this album are crafted via odd sounds.
Another amazing thing about this band is that they break down into funky/jazzy breakdowns throughout the album that just add even more "cool" and "unique" to their style.
I instantly fell in love with this band.
I probably played this album everyday all day for about 4 or 5 years, without getting sick of it, each day listening for more layers within the music. Hook this album up in a superb stereo or surround sound and you will be amazed at how awesome everything sounds.
Even their appearnce was striking. They dressed like a mix of grunge/hip hop. Even the way they danced around in their videos and on stage, as if they were moshing, and the popular "jump up and down in one place" move was really cool. Everything about this band screamed "cool", "new", and "different".
Yet this quintet from Bakersfield CA always managed to keep this rugged and raw vibe about them.
One critic back in the day put it really well. He said that Korn have the ability to take the ugly and turn it beautiful, and the music on this self titled album is very beautiful, in a rugged, raw and ugly way.
A massive cult following soon emerged all praising Korn, which in turn they deserved.
However, there is one person that gets hardly any credit for this stellar album, and that is Ross Robinson. He produced the album, formed and shaped the finished product. If you ever get a chance to hear the seld titled album demo, I suggest you do so. You will hear that they sounded much more rock-ish, more chords and less stop/start mechanics. They were really un-defined and sounded much like other bands. Ross changed all that, forced the band to truly channel their inner angst and feelings and project them. The final product is this wonderful masterpiece that still to this day stands as one of the best albums ever crafted, at least in our generation.
Literally every song is worth listening to, again and again. Each song is very intense, and full of emotion, especially the final track "Daddy", which features a long, long outro of Jonathan Davis crying and whining while the band plays on(its very interesting, to say the least).
This album also features a "hidden" song, if you can call it that. It sounds like a husband and wife arguing over the present state of their car.
My personal favorite track is probably "Ball Tongue", a strange song filled with errie guitars, pounding drums and bass and Jonathan Davis' strange grunts, growls and chants.
Seriously, if you haven't heard this album yet, I suggest you obtain it, for the sake of hearing a great piece of history.

Issues are one thing Korn singer Jonathan Davis has in spades. On the quintet's fourth album, Davis spews forth about misery, hate, happiness, pain, paranoia, and other primal issues, all set to an appropriately dark soundtrack. From "Dead" (which begins with Davis's trademark bagpipes in a sort of choral musical setting), to the first single, "Falling Away from Me," the vocalist's quavery, edgy, manic delivery sets the tone for this 16-song outing. Not as modern sounding or melodic as 1998's Follow the Leader, Issues is a throwback to earlier, more metallic Korn. If possible, Issues has an even creepier vibe than its three predecessors, thanks partially to eerie guitar lines and vocal effects, especially potent on "Let's Get This Party Started." Twisted, cohesive, and epic, Issues comes through for Korn's fans, who relate to the band's cathartic musical exorcisms and aggro, bottom-heavy rage, commercialism be damned. (Please note: You may receive any one of the album's four different covers.) --Katherine Turman

One of the best by Korn.......2007-08-01
This album and album by korn that had alot of tracks on them which made it a very long album. I think it was different from their other albums not because of the style, but because there is not TOO many good songs on it, but the songs that are good are REALLY REALLY good. Some of the best songs by Korn are on this cd. The best songs on this cd are "Falling Away from me", "Trash", "Make me Bad", "Somebody Someone", "Counting", and "Let's Get This Party Started". When this album came out it was when Head and David were still with Korn, so that had alot to do with it's greatness. One of my favorites by Korn, great album.
KORN has ISSUES!.......2007-07-09
Well i don't think i realized jonathan has cut out that hip hip garbage after follow the leader but still they are a horrible band and their songs are mostly the same usual mediocre and uninspiring lyrics about how f**ked up life is. falling away was one of the most dumbest songs/daddy and let's get this party started well all of them do. None of these songs are anyewhere creative or amazingly talented the guitar riffs are all the same they sound so poorly like the guitars are farting really loud poorly quality bass use sloppy drummings and jonathan is not a rocker he's a whiner and an embarrassment who needs to seek professional help. Korn is without a doubt a pathetic attempt to be called metal and their a discrace to real metal heads. I use to like em back in highschool but not anymore I found my true taste in what I love now.
Revenant Voices.......2007-06-15
John, I have to completely agree with you. Korn made a tremendous effort in crafting an elaborate masterpiece like that of "Issues." I took a break from listening to Korn by time I was a sophomore in high school (mostly due to my archaic religious beliefs), and just turned my head to some of the albums I missed from 2002-2006. "Issues" has always been a jewel in my CD collection (now my Ipod's sleeve!), and it will always be for its uniqueness, emotional content, and subliminal messages of hate, love and f***ed up life.
This started the experimental side of Korn, with mixed results.........2007-05-31
I enjoyed this cd just like I enjoy all the other Korn cds. But it is one that I normally don't listen to straight through. There are some songs that I skip over. The really good songs, like "Falling Away From Me", "Trash", "Make Me Bad" and "Somebody, Someone" are great additions to the Korn catalog, but I find it hard to get into the other songs as much. None of the other songs are bad, it's just that I have so many other great Korn songs to listen to instead, and I prefer the heavier side of Korn from previous outings. It is worth buying just for those hit songs I mentioned, but don't expect another "Follow the Leader".
I prefer corn to Korn.......2007-04-01
Take the lamest Nine Inch Nails album and splice it with the best Linkin Park album,(or I guess any Linkin Park album will do since they all sound the same) and what do you have? Korn. Enough of these substanceless, mainstream, sell-out high school rock bands like Korn, Linkin Biscuit and Hootie Blew my Fish already! Bands like Razed in Black, Psychopomps, and Biopsy all make Korn look like N'Sync singing a Shania Twain song.

The band that unwittingly begat the current, if waning, rap-metal frenzy, Korn has been semidormant since 1999's multiplatinum Issues, while bands they inspired, such as Linkin Park, have ruled the charts and minds of disenfranchised teens. The wait for Untouchables' 14 cutting cuts is more than worth it, however. The quintet's heavy sound and lyrical angst have not been dulled by success. Singer Jonathan Davis's often agonized, cathartic lyrics and slightly lispy, emotive delivery are as heavy and varied as on previous outings. On the first single, "Here to Stay," which boasts a spooky, Nine Inch Nails feel and Fieldy's aggro, down-tuned bass, Davis growls in pain, "This state is elevating / As the hurt turns into hating / Anticipating all the f---ed up feelings again."
Among and within songs, Korn move seamlessly and dynamically from gentle, spooky, and lushly melodic to a bass-heavy propulsive, explosive musicality. "Embrace" is almost grandiose and Cult-like in its rock drama, in contrast to the punky, straight-up "Wake Up Hate," on which Davis's vocals are especially creepy and Marilyn Manson-like as he rants: "I'm, I'm filthy/ Wasted piece of s--t/ I am disgusting/ Take me away." Untouchables, with its brutal introspection and hints of misogyny, is sure to earn its parental advisory sticker. But the album is still a must-have: 62 minutes of deeply felt, ultra-intense spewings, a tour de force that will strike a chord with fans and critics alike. --Katherine Turman

Deserves all the praise it has got........2007-06-03
First, a confession: for the most part, this album was my first introduction to really listening to KoRn. I had heard a few of their songs in the past and had placed them in the dead nu-metal camp in my eyes. For some reason though, I thought I should give them a chance and since Untouchables is more recent than their earlier stuff, perhaps it would be different. I was very, very surprised.
This album is so creative and so different from the nu-metal genre, shedding away the hard-to-digest rapping in lieu for more melodic vocal melodies (which is something this album is exceedingly good for). The occasional programmed drum beats over the rest of the band are done to great effect and the subtle synths used behind many of the tracks are fantastically layered.
I was left with one clear impression after hearing this album; Untouchables is almost hauntingly vampy. Those in the vampire subculture would find much to be interested in with this album. I love it.
Back to heavier Korn, while keeping experimental edge.......2007-05-31
I was happy that Korn was taking a step back into heavier territory with this album, and it is a much stronger cd then "Issues" was. "Here to Stay", "Thoughtless", "Alone I Break" are the singles, but there are lots of other songs on here that are great. There are still a couple of weaker songs here and there, but for the most part, I was happy with this cd and still listen to it regularly. Their earlier cds are heavier and have stronger, harder hitting songs.
This is my favorite honestly..........2007-03-27
and I know a lot of you disagree with that statement but I stand by it. This album is the most diverse Korn has ever been and the most creative they have ever been. No two songs sound alike. To be honest with you, I found Follow the Leader and Issues to be decent but not great because a number of the songs ran into each other and sounded too much of the same. This is a dynamic work of art. Don't diss this just because it's a new sound, just go into it with an open mind and it will blow you away.
KoRn.......2007-02-24
This KoRn CD is a must have to complete your music collection, it is not as good as there later albums but every KoRn fan needs to own this CD!
Korn does it right.......2006-09-08
This is a great album. If Korn could put this kind of album out consistantly they would be one of the greatest metal bands ever. There is no rap here, no Nu metal, no experimentation, and no filler. This album is just amazing songwriting, great hooks, melody, riffs, and crunch. Korn forgets how to be trendy and gets real and gets it right.

Yes it is........2007-05-15
This was almost a continuation of their debut. The sound is very similar, and just like the first, there is not a dull moment. Odd song structures and insane vocals are prevalent. "ADIDAS", "Wicked", "No Place to Hide", "Twist", "Chi", "Swallow" "Mr. Rogers", etc. This album rocks and is full of killer tracks. There are a lot of Korn haters out there, so if you are just becoming familiar with them, listen and make a decision for yourselves. Don't listen to the haters. They are usually people who don't have open minds about anything, or they are insecure and bashing others makes them feel special. Korn is one of the best heavy bands in recent years and one of the most original to come out in the 90s. Are they the most talented? NO. Plenty of other bands have better guitarists, drummers, bassists, and vocalists. But they are good at what they do, and have made a successful career of it. I don't care how talented someone is with their instrument: if they can't write a hook, people will forget them. Korn knows hooks.
Missing they Y from the name.......2007-03-12
Once upon a time I use to really like Korn and this was shockingly one of my favourite albums at the time but thankfully I grew up and listening to this garbage now makes me feel embarrased. Every track on here sounds the same apart from Wicked which is a cover anyway but this record is so obviously rushed it must have been done in like 2 days.
Johnathan Davis is one of the worst singers ever all he does is whine like a bratty kid that didn't get his favourite toy for christmas, he can't sing to save his life. None of the surposed musicians in the band have any talent. The guitaists Munky and head are both lousy guitarists who play the same riff over again, while Fieldy just slaps random strings not creating any kind of melody from them just slaps which doesnt make a good bass player. Drummer David Silveria is below Mediocre he just plays the same basic drum beat over and over.
The album starts of horibly with Twist which sees Jonathan making stupid noises over a crappy riff in the background. Making stupid noises is perhaps the only thing Johnathan Davis is good at.
It surprises me Head didnt leave earlier then he did if I was in this band I would have left as soon as this appaling record came out and saved myself the embaresment. Your life certainly wont be peachy after listening to this.
more melody is needed.......2006-12-28
overall this album is ok for the most part guitar riffs werent too great but the songs still sounded good it had really no melody becouse the instruments were grindy and thrashy , but aside from the non meledic tunes the lyrics are pretty dark and creepy and give you that wierd feeling however the reason it was so grimey was not only for the lack of melody but becouse this ws a bit of a turn point for the band from general guitars(self titled korn)to electronics (untouchables)this i believe was in the middle of all of it anyway they were on a slipperly slope with this and almost messed this one up but they had some songs that kept the album alive like porno creep and a.d.i.d.a.s. and I dont think there will ever be a time were they ever mess an album up
Korn sucks! .......2006-12-15
This is the worst band I ever heard nevermind limp bizkit korn bearly has guitar riffs no guitar solos the 2 guitars and the bass sound like pure crap. I guess the drums were pretty good that's a 1 star for david but thats not enough to save the performance of this mediocre band and jonathan davis can't even sing right and his gibberish sounds annoying stupid and untalented. I use to be a big fan of korn but now I can never go back to these guys anymore.
Overrated.......2006-09-15
Okay, let's get something straight: Just because an album is loud and full of anger does not make it good!
The album starts out with Jon screaming complete gibberish while the music players of the group make various noises with their instruments, this goes on for about a minute. The rest of the songs continue in pretty much the same fashion.
Honestly, the only one who sounds halfway decent on here is David, but as a drummer he'd have to be pretty bad not to sound good compared to the squealing and sludging noise of everyone else. On this record, rather than playing their instruments, the boys seem to be "playing with" them, as a child would play with his food. The guitarists try to mask the fact that they aren't very good by incorporating all sorts of effects and tricks into their playing, like pitch-shifting pedals and feedback, but that doesn't help any.
I was surprised to learn that the song "No Place to Hide" was nominated for a grammy. Just goes to show you how bad people's judgement is nowadays.
In conclusion, Any KoRn fan will tell you this is a very good album because of it's raw anger and so-called heaviness, but don't be fooled, this is not good because it's not music it's noise. This album is essential only if you're a diehard KoRn fan and any other fan is likely to call you a poser if you don't own it. To everyone else, stay far away.
