Flashy, Fun, and Flamboyant.......2007-05-31
The Circus March is unfortunately a style of music that is often ignored, yet can be one of the most difficult things to play. Musicians almost have to have a feel for it to achieve the desired effect. Each march contained herein captures both excitement, showmanship, and even a certain degree of comedy that is associated with this style. Listening to these brings back a by-gone era of bearded ladies, roller coasters, and kettle corn. If you play this regularly, you may even begin to smell the peanuts roasting....
stunning musical review.......2005-09-27
This is music I have not heard, or played, for years. Most impressive musicianship. And the tempos are unbelievable! For this size group, it is amazing--and nothing less would be expected.
I am a retired music teacher, and this brought me back to the times when I played in large marching bands, or smaller groups for the local rodeo, as a college student. Great excitement in listening, and being swept away to a time when I had less to worry about.
The music itself has a great affect on me, besides the impressive way in which it is delivered. Great sound. Great precision. Great music that just isn't played or used much anymore. How fun to relive those moments--especially the ones featuring the trombone.
Nice and lively!.......2004-04-28
I was specifically looking for music of the circus and this recording just blew me away. It is clean and well done -- technically speaking. The Eastman Wind Ensemble is spectacular! If you are looking for something that sounds like a circus band, this is NOT it. This is a very professional, high quality recording of some of the best march music ever composed.
Sounds even better than when I first heard it.......2004-03-01
When I first heard the last eleven marches on this recording; I heard them on tape, and I really enjoyed them, this was back in 1988 when I was in the seventh grade. When I moved in the winter of 1988, I lost that tape. I was very sad when I did, and it was not until the summer of 2002 that I saw this recording at amazon; 14 years later still great, and sounds even better on CD than it did on tape. This time was even better, because it has even more marches, in the old tape, it had what on this recording are tracks 17-28. Tracks 1-16 are equally good, this recording is of a great sentimental value for me...I hope you enjoy as much as I have 14 years later....
A staple.......2003-06-14
A great collection of marches not by Sousa conducting by none other than Fennell. You can't go wrong having this in your band CD collection.

Customer Reviews:
Motown meets James Brown.......2007-03-28
The Invictus Soul Box Set is the best compilation I own (and I have over 2500 CDs and more MP3s). There is not a single weak track. While the Motown sound is still strong, new 1970's styles have been grafted on. This unique sound is somewhere between the driving I'll Be There (Four Tops) and The Payback (James Brown). Every song features an excellent rhythm section (probably borrowed from Berry Gordy), interesting lyrics and dynamic performance.
This set prompted me to get Chairmen of the Board Finder's Keeper Invictus Anthology, Holland Dozier Holland Why Can't We Be Lovers Invictus Sessions, Freda Payne Unhooked Generation Complete Invictus Sessions and The Politicians' Psycha Soul Funkadelic CDs.
Get it while you can. This one's a keeper!

Customer Reviews:
The best alboum .......2007-07-26
Gene Eoddenberry's Andromeda is sirie and OST is the best and took that why is my favorite soundtrack from faverite scifi sirie
Enjoyable.......2005-08-23
If you like TV/movie soundtracks, and Andromeda, you should like this. Good Andromeda music, also contains the two different opening themes. (Remember, it is a TV soundtrack so it contains synthesized music.) I enjoy listening to it, and can have it playing in the background at work too without it being bothersome.
A Great Soundtrack.......2005-02-01
The soundtrack to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is one of the best sci-fi soundtracks to come out in quite a while. I found the music exciting, interesting and intriguing, and on several tracks simply exhilarating; composer Matthew McCauley really does take you on a musical roller-coaster, from the stately High Guard Theme to Dylan's theme to Trance's and Beka's themes to the Nietzschean Attack theme. McCauley musically explores each character, underscoring and enhancing their unique personality. The album has kind of a New Age-ish sound to it on several tracks which gives it a mysterious ethereal quality. A great score for a great series. Composer Matthew McCauley certainly knows his stuff. This is just great music whether or not you're a fan of the show!
love it.......2003-08-08
Great presentation of soundtrack. Interesting instrumentals for even those who are not familiar with the show. I listen to it practically all the time!
A great television score!.......2002-03-27
First off, this is a television soundtrack, not a movie soundtrack-- many of the "instruments" are synthesized. Okay, that aside, this is a great album! It's been a long time since I've heard so many different character themes on a tv soundtrack. From the Heroic "Dylan Hunt", to the brooding "Rev Bem and Magog" music, to the outright ominious "Neitzscheans" themes, this album is a winner. It's nice that the producers also included Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" theme from season 1, which is regrettably no longer used on the show. The music on this album takes you on a emotional roller coaster-- from mysterious, to brooding, to heroic and back again. High recommended for fans of both scores and the television series alike!

Outlaw country at it's finest.......2004-01-10
David never achieved the success that Waylon and Willie did, but his music was excellent as this twofer shows. The first album is from 1980 and the second from 1981. A bonus track from 1978 is also included.
Most of the songs here are originals, many written by David, but there are three famous covers. Dock of the bay is the Otis Redding classic - as with any great song, it can be adapted to any genre and David proves this with this excellent cover. Pledging my love is a cover of the fifties song by Johnny Ace, to which David adds a spoken introduction. Perhaps the most unlikely cover is Stand by your man. I believe David was the first man to record this song although Lyle Lovett and Elton John have both recorded it since and there may be others. David adds some narrative near the end to explain why he's singing it.
Among the many great original songs, Tennessee whiskey is perhaps the best, but there are many other great songs. David's status as an outlaw is clear when he sings I love robbing banks. Two duets with Karen Brooks remind me of her brilliant solo albums of the early eighties. Sadly, those albums did not do as well as they deserved to so Karen never made it as a singer, nor did her number one country duet with T G Sheppard (Faking love). At least we can enjoy hearing her sing with David on As far as this feeling will take us and The best game in town.
There are many other fine songs here, as you will discover if you buy this album.
Classic COE.......1999-10-30
There is no doubt that some of COE's absolute best work was done in the time period that these songs were written and performed. It really is a 4 star album if you are a REAL COE fan. DAC most likely will not be truely appreciated until he is gone forever.

Almost excellent!.......2005-10-13
This Ruth Copeland collection is a good one with excellent remastering for stereo. All of the songs are here except "Madam Butterfly". Why they left it out is a complete mystery to me. That is the main reason I could only give this cd 4 stars.
Former Detroiter and Ruth Copeland Fan.......2004-07-09
I was so happy to come across this CD. I have all three of Ruth's early albums, even have a 45. Particularly relevant in today's political climate is "The Medal" - touches my heart. I also love "Crying". Her voice speaks to me with such soul. Very talented and underrated artist.

Wonderful baritone.......2004-01-01
A very special singer. I second the other reviewers' comments, and add that I have been singing along, as best I can, all morning, to this wonderful CD. An exceptional Largo, by the way, even given the aria's warhorse status.
Magnificent tribute to a truly great artist!.......2000-05-04
This album is an absolute prize. Merrill, to me, was the finest of the American Baritone crop, possessing a rich timbre that is unmatched by todays standards. This CD finds Merrill offering some of his best and most famous renditions, some of which have been regrettably out of print for decades. That being said, this issue is an extremely welcome one indeed. One standout is the rare "Zazà, piccola zingara" from the seldom performed opera Zaza, by Pagliacci composer Ruggiero Leoncavallo. This aria, in this reviewer's opinion, uses that rich sonorous Merrill sound to its best advantage. Merrill once stated in a Met broadcast interview that this one recording (Zaza) was his all time favorite and the best recording of his voice. Other standout arias are, of course, "Largo al Factotum", "O vin dissipe la tristesse" from Hamlet, and the ethereal sounding "Vision Fugitive" from Herodiade. The non-operatice fare that stands out are "The Blind Ploughman" (what a truly heartfelt this performance is), "Drink to Me only with Thine Eyes", and the three spirituals. The recording quality is good overall and acceptable in places. Merrill was truly a great Baritone and this recording is a must for anybody's collection.

Excellent performances.......1999-12-13
Robert Merrill has for too long been written off as a bad actor with a good voice. What he really was was a bad actor with an EXCEPTIONALLY good voice, and these arias and songs prove it. And not only do these selections show off his wonderful, rich baritone, they also include some great songs and arias which aren't usually recorded. In particular, the "Invictus" of Bruno Huhn, the Toreador Song from Carmen, and the three spirituals are all either unknown or under-recorded, and all receive their due on this album. And, of course, Merrill's signature aria, "Largo al factotum," is wonderful. The only problem I have is with the sound quality of the album, but even that isn't as bad as it could be, and becomes less noticeable after listening to a couple tracks.

Product Description
Even in this modern world, it seems every few years, some new resurgence of "folk music" rises out of nowhere and finds a welcoming following. The latest wave commonly labeled as freak-, psych-, or wyrd-folk has given us such stars as Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family, and Six Organs of Admittance.
Just about two decades ago, another curious folk music movement began to emerge. A strain of English "industrial" groups were looking for ways to impart new meaning into their bleak and frightening noise, and a new and highly creative, "post-industrial" folk music came to life, heavily charged with mystical and philosophical themes. "Neofolk" as it would come to be known is largely defined by early releases by Tony Wakeford's Sol Invictus, alongside fellow pioneers Current 93 and Death in June.
2006 now sees the reissue of one of the best and most important releases of neofolk, Sol Veritas Lux by Sol Invictus.
Sol Veritas Lux (1988) is likely to rank as one of the most raw listening experiences you can ever find. Playing this album is like calling an arctic blast from Old Pagan Europe. Whatever you think, you are not ready to hear this album.
Over the years Sol Invictus would smooth out the rough edges and produce many beautiful albums, yet the potent Sol Veritas Lux has always stood as one of the best regarded and best selling Sol Invictus releases.
The 2006 edition of Sol Veritas Lux celebrates nearly 20 years of Sol Invictus, presented in a luxurious package with new liner notes, and freshly remastered to bring out even more of its primitive glory.
Sol Veritas Lux is promoted & distributed in North America by Strange Fortune.

Great classic, occultic Goth!.......2006-11-20
*This review is courtesy of newWitch magazine*
Sol Inviticus, hailing from England, is a project of Death In June's Tony Wakeford. I'm surprised at how many times I've heard the band classified as "apocalyptic neo-folk" or a genre similar. To me, this sounds undeniably classically Goth in all the right ways. Their sound is similar to the Gothic rock artists that helped defined "Goth" as a musical genre throughout the 80s. For occult-friendly fans of artists such as Fields of the Nephilim, The Wake, Corpus Delicti, and Nosferatu, this band may be right up your alley.
The term Sol Invictus means "undefeated sun." It was a title used to refer to the Roman deities Sol, Mithra, and El Gabal, all of whom have solar association. The band Sol Invictus is certainly versed in occultism, and has a particular affinity to European Paganism (as well as Germanic Heathenry) and Mediterranean history. This is apparent in a number of tracks in Sol Veritas Lux. This album is a remastered version of the same release from 1990, and is a combination of the album Against the World and the live-in-Tokyo Jaws of the Serpent.
This album is straight-forward in that it uses little sampling or overlays. It is, for the most part, "raw," especially the live tracks. The songs are dreamy, dark, and leave plenty of room for the imagination. It's never assaulting on the senses; it's definitely astral. I've found this release to be perfect background music for reading, writing, spellcrafting, etc. This is the type of music that allows the listener to choose whether to let it to be a pleasant audile backdrop, or to become immersed in the emotion of the sound.
RAVEN DIGITALIS
Primitive and Raw prelude to a great prolific band........2004-02-04
This is a mixed release of Sol Invictus' first full length, "Against the Modern World" (1987) and the live album recorded in Japan "In the Jaws of the Serpent" (1989) in case you didn't know already.
Those words in the title might make the CD sound bad, but I really enjoy this. If you already have Lex Talionis, imagine that album, but more raw, worse production, more primitive/naïve, and a younger voice of Tony. This album also uses a drum machine for a strange halfway point between electronica/industrial and folk-noir, reminiscent of a few Death in June albums. There are very little symphonic elements compared to their other CDs and it sounds relatively stripped down. There is only a little violin and piano hinted in a couple songs, and the rest is just vocals, drum machine, guitars, and bass.
"Angel's Fall" begins the album with quite catchy acoustic strumming, mysterious synthed-sounding keyboard tones, and an upbeat rhythm. This is probably my favorite song on the cd. "Raven Chorus" has a steady rhythm, a calmer feel, and a nice overlying acoustic melody over the main repeating one. "Against the modern world" is a quite fast (just over 2 minutes) and simple song with female backing vocals. "A Ship is Burning" is a very short and haunting song. "Summer Ends" is a favorite, with what almost sounds like clapping from the drum machine, those mysterious synth-keys, and very catchy, gentle yet straightforward acoustic strumming.
I mostly bought this album for "Against the Modern World," the live recording isn't that great (not that I knew that at the time...). I usually don't listen to the live album, and if it were released by itself, I probably wouldn't even have bought it. (Well, it was released by itself at first, but you can't find it like that anymore)
This also includes "Joy of the World," a somewhat interesting unreleased instrumental, which sounds like it contains the background noises from "Tooth and Claw" from "Lex Talionis"
Many people might not like this album compared to what the band has evolved into today, but it might also be the other way around. I really enjoy everything from their oldest material to their newest material. At least the first part of this album is very worthwhile. Very early music of great artists that now have a huge catalog usually has some special significance and a unique feel.
One of the best Odinist rock bands.......2003-09-06
This is one of the best Odinist rock bands around. Very industral and folkish. A must have.
Hesitantly 4 stars.......2002-07-06
This is a very mixed release, as is likely when you combine two different releases and combine them into one. The first part "Against The Modern World" is excellent. Some of the songs "Long Live Death", "Summer's End", "A Ship Is Burning" and the "Raven Chorus" are classics. Interstingly they have that kind of post Joy Division-esque/post Death In June type sound and reveal a kind of bridge from Wakeford's DIJ days to the more folky/neo-classical sound of later Sol Invictus. Very cool, dark stuff.
The second part is a live recording which quite frankly is of questionable quality. Yeah, some of the performances are good but the recording just isn't that great in my opinion. If the whole release were like this I would not give it many stars, however te first part is so good and so worth it, that I have to give it 4 stars. The first part is a must have and if the whole cd were like the first half I would have given it 5 stars.
Part studio/part live.......2000-06-15
This release combines the first two Sol Invictus releases, "Against The Modern World" and "In the Jaws of the Serpent" with an unreleased instrumental, "The Joy of the World". Musically, "ATMW" features the familliar SI sound of drums, keyboard, bass, and acoustic guitar. The songs are short and to the point. Highlights are: "Raven Chorus", with its stripped down percussion and instrumentalization, and "Long Live Death", an upbeat (if possible) anthemic piece.
Part two of the disc is "In the Jaws of the Serpent". This was recorded live in Japan in 1998. While some of the material is available elsewhere in studio version, the less polished result is appealing. Some of the songs sound almost studio quality. "Somewhere in Europe" rises to the top with its faster tempo and militant drums. Because of the live recording, a number of the songs have a very fuzzy bass sound which adds nicely to the undistorted electric guitar.
If you don't own both the albums which comprise this release, I believe this would be the choice format. The unavailability of quality live material from Sol Invictus makes this a good buy as does the slightly different takes on other familliar studio recordings. This clearly shows that the sound Sol Invictus has now was being successfully cultivated over ten years ago.
