5 out of 5 stars My Mother's Music.......2005-01-31

I heard this album when I was in my 1-didgets and I must say, this is a good album for the following.

#1: Dancing

#2: Mediation

#3: Yoga/Stretching

#4: Martial Arts

If you need some relaxation for you body, mind and soul, don't hesitate to purchase this.

4 out of 5 stars Moving to the Music, a personal & "daily" practice.......2001-03-20

I first learned of Gabrielle Roth at a Sacred Path men's retreat. The retreat focused on sacred movement, attaching emotions & totems to each of Roth's five dance styles: flowing, stacatto, chaos, lyrical, and stillness. We had live drumming at the retreat and didn't use recorded music. On the way home, however, I stopped and bought a copy of INITIATION so I could work through the rhythms myself.

If not danced to, the music is OK, nothing spectacular. It's not particularly great party dance music, either. But as the basis for an embodied spiritual practice? Wow! It's hard to beat.

I open up with flowing, connecting with Goddess, connecting with Earth, connecting with Ancestors, connecting with Spirit, connecting with Heart. I let my body move in flowing motions, softly, gently, slowly opening, encompassing more and more.

Moving on to stacatto, I move into a new energy space. Man, the toolmaker, not simply flowing with the current, but carving out a life. My energy level is rising. Into this movement I pour my plans, my goals, all that I would control.

The third movement, Chaos, seems to be the natural result of carving out my expectations from life. I let my body move wildly, struggling to control the rhythm, to push the river, to herd cats. This is where I bring my anger, frustration, and fear, letting the emotions flow through body language, in which no lie can be enacted.

The exhaustion of Chaos leads naturally into the rest of lyrical movement. It's discovering a new level of peace, of connectedness with the Universe, with Goddess, with Spirit; knowing that I'm not alone in the Chaos.

Finally, comes stillness, where I allow my motions to wind down, allow my body to slow down, to come to rest, to enter into meditation.

I've not worked with the other body music on the CD, I don't have enough time most days to work through the five rhythms. But that leaves me something to look forward to.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2000-03-23

This is one of the most magical CDs I've ever heard. The music is purifying. It helps to focus my mind at the end of the day when I need to relax.

1 out of 5 stars What Was Todd On When He Came Up With This?.......2007-03-28

If there ever was a reason to stay drug-free, Initiation proves it. Todd, easily one of the most gifted songwriters in pop rock history, completely falls off the deep end with Initiation. I'm not going to experiment with what Todd used to come up with this album, but perhaps that means that I won't ever appreciate this album. I'm fine with that--the bizarre album is virtually unlistenable except for the first track. Todd has dozens of classic songs, so even devoted Todd-ees can skip purchasing Initiation and have a real complete disography of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Warning.......2007-03-15

This is one of my all time favorite Todd albums. There isn't a bad song on here and it's unfortunate that at it's release was widely panned. The album also lasts 67 and 1/2 minutes which in the days of lps was quite long. Side one features six songs played mostly with Utopia which was going thru a lineup change at the time. In fact, it was during these sessions that Roger Powell and John "Willie" Wilcox were "asked" to join the band. Side two is made up of the Cosmic Fire segment running 36 minutes. The most known song on here is Real Man which beings the album in fine fashion followed by Born To Synthisize(think of the Grateful Dead's What's Become Of The Baby).Eastern Intrigue is fun which runs into the title track which smokes with some help from early midi stuff. Fair Warning is a cool ballad with great lyrics about an individual's choice in the way things are(I don't like to call it fate as it releaves the person's responsibility for their actions like the song suggests).
I should add that all the songs on here have meaning.Side two is given to an instrumental piece called Cosmic Fire. The best sounding version is again the Japan import

1 out of 5 stars An insult to his listeners.......2007-03-04

Todd Rundgren is part genious, part kid, and part lazy bumb. This work, when contrasted with Lies is pathetic. Using one long song on one side to fill up the album with junk is a slap in the face of his fans.
I love "The Last Ride" but the rest of this album can just be trashed.

2 out of 5 stars Todd throws a curve ball.......2006-08-29

"Real Man" is a terrific opening song and you would think the rest of the album will be of comparable quality and then he gets all crazy and self indulgent.. This is when Todd, I think, was crazy and thought he could do whatever he wanted. Hey Todd! Art should always have an audience and this was brutal.

"Eastern Intrigue" is OK but the rest was really, really bad. It was unlistenable in the psychodelic 70's. Today, it is even worse.

I saw Todd on the LIARS tour and he played "Born to Synthesize" ...yuck...

I am not the artist but as a fan, I am the audience I know what should and should not be played. I am the customer. An artist should play their good songs not their bad songs

Get the song "real man" off of a compilation and stay away from this garbage!

5 out of 5 stars my fave.......2006-07-07

of all the records he's done and the myriad of styles, this is the one that sits atop the pile for me.

why? because it combines in the smoothest way possible the varying aspects of this multi dimensional artist named todd. first, the warbly leadoff single real man deals with issues never before addressed in pop song format. the sound is otherworldly on this whole album and thats another reason it is the best of all. the single has the most haunting deep synth sound i have ever heard and i dare anyone to find another sound like the keyboard sound on this studio verison. its otherworldly.

second, the naked born to synthesize holds up well as a showcase for the effects on todds voice..you can feel the blood running through his veins on this one..into the shimmering death of rock and roll-i was always dissappointed sultan sang this live with utopia but always glad to hear it..the solos here eat your face alive..rock is dead! long live rock! breathtaking around the corners.....

then comes the duo of tunes that stood as singnificant meat nightly in the peak years of utopia..eastern intrigue creates the amazing sounds of incense wafting in the air, sound of an appearing horizon at dawn..again, with the voices and their chants doing amazing things with changing effects on each successive verse..another production and artisitic acheivement never to be matched by another..

then comes the apex of side 1, the title track..where the sonics have been fine tuned to a light string touch over a chugging rhythm section of 2 drummers.the sound on all these tracks is so innovative, there are so records that use the same sounds as todd did here..this title track is a great example...the sound comes in along the edges and is not in anyway standard sounds..todd took a lot of time to perfect these sounds and thats what sets this album further apart from the pack...the solos by roger powell, david sanborn and todd just elevate the heads of all outward.

.then the deep deep soul closer, fair warning actually brought a tear upon first listen when it was released. ill never forget the look on everyones face as the tune tumbled out of the speakers for the first time-we were convinced it was over after this album at time..maybe we were too stoned, i dont know.but i was glad when the next one appeared (faithful). we knew then the mesaage was "find your own way" rather than "its over..."

but side two was where the hardy souls were separated from the sheep...it is a sonic side long experiment that again has no parallels. yes, the krautrock groups and free jazzers have endless freak out whole side stuff, but thats not what this is. many who didnt listen to it were lost..in fact the song death of rock and roll kinda sets it up for you. your only limtation is your own mind and many people checked themselves out of the game upon hearing the synths enter..figuring it to be another shaft goes to outer space..its is not...it is a masterful well planned thematically unified art (of todd and roger) on par with any experimental electronic piece ever written by anyone. anyone. without going into the details, i would urge everyone..even those who say they dont like it already to sit down and play it all the way through. if you make it that far, i know you wont hate it..you may not get it the first play but try again...there are such revelations great music and ideas contained conveyed and compressed in these grooves...made for out of body or deep meditation..this will take you places no music has ever done before and im not saying that from a naive point of view..ive heard a lot of things down the same road and there's nothing that touches this.

todd had a lot to say here and said it all without uttering a word. an artist at the peak of his powers unbound by convention both of structure and sound. every time you hear this record it will amaze you. every time. all you have to do is listen. i dont mean talk through it, i mean really listen. it will change your head for good.

5 out of 5 stars happiness takes place in small piano tunes.......2001-07-24

these short piano pieces are simple, but absolutely not boring. gurdjieff and de hartmann wrote some of the most thoughtful and sincere music you'll ever hear. I found this CD over a year ago and it's one I return to over and over again.

    5 out of 5 stars Cacaphonic Harmonious.......2001-07-15

Truly an exposition of beautiful "objective" listening. This music will not put you to sleep. Transitions are abrupt and engaging throughout the score's entirity. I play the music whenever I find myself searching for something to do or am bored. This music will consume all negativity and poke the listner to begin a stirring sensation in their own mentation. The music is not sophisticated or eligant by no means, but has a way about it which will intrige one to listen again and again.

    5 out of 5 stars Sac-Town Delight.......2005-04-12

This is the cd that turned me onto the Sacramento rap scene. Great CD all the way through. Sounds real nice in the ride. I also credit this cd for introducing me to my favorite rapper T-nutty. Seeing how not much good comes out of the west anymore its nice to know Sac is still holdin it down. Buy Last of the flowheakinz and flowmastermouth. I don't mean to plug this guy but these are classic cd's in my collection and he is probably the most underrated rapper in the country. He should be gettin respect across the globe.

    1 out of 5 stars A Bold Prototype for a New Genre.......2004-05-31

This is something new under the sun: Autobiographical Pederastic Rap. This bold album tells the vivid, graphic story, set to some ill beats, of how the young Mr. X (the pseudonym chosen by little Billy Queenan to protect his identity...oops!) was violently (some might say "passionately") introduced to the joys and sorrows of inverted love. Whether he was born this way, or whether his earth-shaking experience as a young altar boy made him this way, we will never know. One thing's for sure, though: He's lovin' every minute of it now and wants to share that love with all the little boys in the hood.

Kudos to Michael Jackson for going out on a limb and producing this one. Heaven knows what drew a sensible bloke like him to get involved with this genre-warping project. I'm glad he did, though.

    5 out of 5 stars Madman Records.......2001-10-29

Locked up in the pen, X-Raided is signed outta Black Market Records and has started his own record label called Madman Records. I gotta say, Madman Records is real tight. He has 2 rappers signed to his label called T-Nutty, and NoLove. They are defenately talanted and have their own style. I defenately look foward to hearing them in the future. Anyways, I thought this album is a great way to start out his new label. The production by Big Hollis and KG is nice throughout the whole album. I wish Madman Records the best of luck in the future.

    4 out of 5 stars pretty sicc.......2001-09-04

this cd is pretty tight. raided kinda changed his style, but he still flows sicc like, and his madman homies are tight too. this shows that raided still has a promising future ahead of him. get it.

5 out of 5 stars MADMAN's PREMEDITATED OUTCOME HAS BEEN UNLEASHED.......2001-06-21

Mass ammounts of deep bass, collide with lyrics, that are written, and displayed flawlessly. X raided, T-nutty, and NoLove show that MADMAN can only get better. And if that proves to be right, then any albums released will far exceed my expectations. Because the Initiation went high above my hopes to begin with. Besides only one track, this cd can be bumped at full throttle all the way through. That's how ive been doin it, since the day it came out. X is always gonna keep it thoro, by laying down well thoughtout lyrics, and then precisely relaying them with thee siccest style. T-nutty's flows unravel very quick, with unique twists in changing the vocal tempo, and he has a different sounding voice too. Speaking of originality. NoLove's presence on this cd didnt come in quantity, but the tracks he tore a lil somthin on, show a very entertaining style, and a lotta potential. Also there's a few other rappers on the label too. If you wanna initiate yourself into real rap, then purchasing this would be a big step forward.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD Worth the wait.......2005-11-20

This is an awesome CD by TheStart, not quite as good as "Shakedown" but definetly an excellent CD and worth the wait. Powerful guitars and heavy drumming mixed with Aimee Echo's fantastic voice makes this CD a treat. Best song has to be "The Underwater Song" some people say this song is to slow but heavy guitars, Aimee's voice, and powerful drumming makes it fantastic, the song bridges from one melody to a completely different melody then back to the original. "The Conversation" another different sounding song with a pause towards the end, you think the song is over but it starts up again, just how it started, nice guitar work. "You, Me, & a Knife" starts out slow but give this one a chance, it builds to a song with powerful lyrics, more heavy guitars, and again Aimee's unique voice. "Christian, Christian" Lots of guitars here, loud and powerful. There are also songs with the 80's influence, "Life is Sweet", "All or Nothing", & "Dead End Queen" for example. Definetly a must for all Start fans even though some of these songs are different and may border on experimental.

When I first listened to this album I immediately disliked Peacocks, Dead End Queen, and Christian Christian. I kinda like them now though. Like Days is a great opening track and probably packs more of the power-pop punch of their first album than anything else here. They show their effect pedal oriented Cocteau Twins/Slowdive/Lush style shoegaze skills on most of these songs, but they take it a step further on The Conversation, Jewel, and You Me And I Knife, making commanding use of Kevin Shields' unique guitar style, proving themselves worthy of a My Bloody Valentine comparison. Those 3 songs are my faves. Oh and Aimee sings good too.

4 out of 5 stars In the words of Mr Gluba: Decent..........2005-03-01

I bought this after seeing them open for Goldfinger. They were TERRIFIC live, and so is this cd. I got mine signed by Aimee Echo... after she opened it for me. It was fun.

She's got a very unique voice. It's nice to see a great band with a female singer in a genre so heavily populated by men. Her voice almost reminds me of an edgier, angrier Gwen Stefani. This is a good thing. I love gwen stefani. The music is so unique. I really enjoy it. I'm glad I bought this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Re-Initiation.......2005-02-04

The power-couple of Aimee Echo and Jamie Miller, collectively, theSTART, finally follow-up 2001's brilliant "Shakedown" with this, their first release on Nitro Records (also home to A.F.I.), "Initiation." I've been an Aimee Echo fan since Human Waste Project. I love her voice, very unique and very seductive. I've also been a fan of Jamie Miller's since his drumming days in Snot, and now, he is just as gifted as the guitarist for this band. There have been a lot of changes in the three years since theSTART made their debut. Aside from being dropped from Geffen, there has also been a line-up change, with former drummer Scott Ellis and bassist Jeff Jaeger exiting the band and being replaced respectively by Billy Brimblecom and Erick Sanger. However, this change hasn't affected the music much. Together with producer Brian Virtue (Deadsy), theSTART has recorded the perfect and long-awaited follow-up the "Shakedown." The style of music they play hasn't changed much, as the lead-off track "Like Days" indicates, but they definitely throw in some new elements. "Life Is Sweet" is a very catchy, and unique sounding song, probably their biggest pop-experiment to date. "The Underwater Song" sounds a lot like their friends in Orgy, while the title track is brief, but murky and experimental, and is followed up by a straight-ahead rock track, "A Thousand Years." "The Conversation" and "Christian, Christian" capitalize on the bands knack for 80's flashbacks very well. All the songs are amazing though. Overall, it's a solid album. It's got all the great elements that "Shakedown" had, with a bit more experimentation and variety. It definitely has potential to do something big for the band, if only their label could get 100 percent behind their backs. If you were a fan of theSTART before, you will more than likely love this.

    Album Description

"Listening to Initiation can re-awaken past-life memories and stimulate amazing visions in the mind's eye." -- Leading Edge Review

The best--and only--recording of its kind! A must-have for anyone interested in meditation, past lives, or mystical history. Features chanting of "Om" and other sacred mantras; no other instruments are used.

1 out of 5 stars Should have taken first reviewer's advice.......2007-04-28

Recorded in 1981 and released in 1996, that should tell you something right there. The enclosed pamphlet mentions that even the guard helped with the singing. This CD is not what one would expect from this artist. He mentions the recording being interrupted by a Japanese family that had found another guard to bribe. While some may get value from the Om meditations, the wild birds in the background on every track take much away from the recording quality because this was recorded inside the pyramid. There is little intrinsic value here.

No, I'm more than a little disappointed in this CD and Borders won't take it back.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-04-08

Let me preface by saying that I really like most of Halpern's music, however, this CD hit way below my expectations. It is a chanting CD without any musical ambiance, and with one 10 minute track of meditation that is "silent meditation", literally. I could've gotten my friends to chant with me while I recorded in the Great Pyramid, or anywhere acoustic for that matter and then added 10 minutes of silence and ended the CD with another chant. I really feel Halpern missed a grand opportunity to do some amazing stuff while in the Great Pyramid, yet he chose to chant, chant, chant. Why, only he can answer that one. I bought this CD before any 30 second bites were available to listen to, otherwise, I would have never bought this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Canadian Gothic.......2001-08-05

Most of you must know that "new" is well-forgotten "old". Showy Canadians Rhea's Obsession are giving the next convincing evidence for it. In their latest album "Re: Initiation / The Mudra Mixes" they returned to their first record "Initiation", reminded their eloquent beginnings and added something brand new. As the first record, "Re: Initiation" is striking by unbelievable blend of celestial ethereal and earthy industrial, where confident and high-grade guitar noises provided by Jim Field meet Bulgarian and Indian rhythms of elegant percussion performed by Rakesh Tewari and Ed Hanley on tablas, doumbek and bodhran; and the whole of this alloy is ravishingly adorned with Sue Hutton's operatically trained vocals. Leading "Memento Mori" is the perfect guide to prevalent experimentation of Rhea's Obsession creative work and sets the mood to the record. Next to bewitching ballads "Waves (Take Me Alive)", enchanting song of sirens, and "Cun Lacoudhir", Gaelic tale about the breaking ice in the dream, there come hypnotizing splitting sounds of "Strategies of Movement", which makes you sit stunned without any twinkling. "Hymn to Pan", reciting of Allister Crowley's poem, is distinguished by its chaotic eerie intensification. Maybe the most glaring piece of this record is "Anxia", romance-turn-to-murder song, which creates mystical and ominous atmosphere basically because of Victor Rebelo's amazing drums. The piece, where love re-incarnated to hatred, sounded in Valentine's Day scene of sci-fi series "Psi Factor: chronicles of the paranormal"; the insertion of this song to the record is rather humane act concealing to everyone being deprived about "Eclipse", band's second release. Enigmatic "Tsunami" in both elaborations is nothing more but obvious work of art, containing mesmeric tribal notes along with Field's fabulous guitar passages. Haujobb remix of "Cun Lacoudhir" is unforgivable challenge to previous serene version of the song, but also it shows the bright example of Rhea's Obsession's considerable experience in creating remixes. With all diversity and singularity of songs, the whole record has one remarkable dignity: Sue Hutton's sensual voice. From the first piece gorgeous modulations of this multi-layered powerful voice possesses your soul, reaches for every cell of your body, makes you feel yourself in smooth sailing flight over uneasy world; it's certain, skillfully controlled, deep and delicate. Okay, please stop comparing Sue with Lisa Gerrard, because actually it's needless, unfair and mistakenly. Why? Because then you'll have to blame all Goth songstresses in that "they are not Lisa". Ultimately, I want to say, that today's music world undergoes hardships about formed, defined and really professional bands. Rhea's Obsession is definitely that sort of rare bands with efficient level and aims, which they always reach without fail. And "Re: Initiation" shows this statement in all its absolutism. Sue and Jim are still true to themselves: intelligent, experimenting, resourceful, distinctive and simply delectable.

4 out of 5 stars The first album is good. The remixes, a mixed bag.......2001-08-02

My understanding is that this is a remastered version of their now out of print first album, Initiation, which was released in limited numbers some years ago.

The songs of the original album are rather different and less poppy in sound and structure, more experimental, than the music on their second album -Between Earth and Sky.- This makes them more enjoyable to my ears. The influence of Celtic and Eastern European folk music is more pronounced, and the singing is stranger and more striking.

Standout tracks include the original -Cun Lacoudhir-, -Death by Moonlight-, and the weird and original -Hymn to Pan-.

The additional material on this release is something else entirely. Most pieces are inoffensive. But I have to mark it down one for the Haujobb wrecking job on -Cun Lacoudhir-, apparently aimed at a club-dance market. This Gaelic song is decidedly not improved by the addition of electronic beeps, industrial noise blasts, and the deliberate distortion of the originally lovely vocals. This seems a lapse of judgment.

4 out of 5 stars Re: member, Re: dedicate---Re: initiation.......2001-07-26

Since the first time I listened to it, Rhea's Obsession's second CD, Between Earth and Sky, has been one of my favorites. I could barely contain myself, waiting for the re-release of their first CD, Initiation (called Re: initiation and containing bonus tracks called the Mudra Mixes). It is in some ways much different from the other album. Sue Hutton's vocals are as haunting and gorgeous as ever, especially on the tracks Momento Mori, Cun Lacoudhir (the breaking ice), and Death by Moonlight. The song Hymn to Pan is a weird spoken-word cacophany that was at first off-putting, but its undeniable power has really grown on me. The Mudra Mixes are set to an electronic background, proving that this band's music can encompass nearly any challenge. Now if only they would tour in the southern US.

    4 out of 5 stars extra tracks.......2007-07-06

I used to listen to this when I was high school back when it came out. It is a great album, but I just recently purchased it again because now I can finally here the extra track I was never able to listen to back in the 90s.
For those that don't know, there is a hidden track before track 1 called running man, you just hit rewind on your cd player. The second track is much more difficult to access. It is after the song Initiation. When the song ends, there is a long passage of feedback. If you have a stereo that can play mono, then just listen to this section in mono and there is a track called the gate/tomorrow, inbetween initiation and the chihuahuaphile. Otherwise (and this is what I did), download this free software called audacity, record the song from your stereo to your computer, or just import the track into Audacity, then split the stereo track, convert each channel to mono, and reexport the track as an mp3. There are some better guidelines if you do a google search for converting stereo to mono. Both of these extra tracks are much quieter and have an haunting feel to them compared to the rest of the album. Also, the version I recently purchased also contained the remixed swing version of Infested as yet another hidden track. I guess there are versions with and without this track, but all in all, this band was (and probably still is) the most creative with the CD format.

    5 out of 5 stars Fair Warning.......2007-03-27
