About the Artist
Mental Home was formed in November of 1993. The original line-up featured the two brothers, Sergey Dmitriev (Vocal/Guitar) and Igor Dmitriev (Drums/Keys), and also Roman Povarov (Lead Guitar) and Denis Samusev (Bass). Taking after an atmospheric doom/death approach the band recorded their first demo "Funeral Service" in January '94. The recordings took place at the Vnukovo Studio, where all the band's recording have been taking place since. Soon after, the band returned back to the studio and in July '94 "Mirrorland" comes forth climbing to new heights. The album was released on MC by Metal Agen Rec/Soyuz selling 5,000 copies and it's since sold-out. Due to an accident, Roman Povarov was left with a impairment in his left hand and was forced to abandon his guitar duties and fully took over the keyboards. The band chose Sergey Kalachov as the new lead guitarist and headed back to the studio to record the highly acclaimed "Vale" which was released in the Spring of '96 by Morbid Noizz. The album sold out in Moscow in less than 3 months and hit the Russian Metal Charts #1 in July of the same year. Shortly after, Roman Povarov abandoned Mental Home. The band invited Michael "Maiden" Smirnoff to join and Maiden not only replaced Roman on keyboards but also took over as manager of Mental Home. In March of '97 Mental Home returned to the studio and began the recordings of their new album. By June they completed their 4th brand new album entitled "Black Art" which included an intro, 8 songs and one instrumental theme. During that time the band also worked on re-releasing their debut "Funeral service" ('94) and "Mirrorland" ('95). In the fall of 1997, Mental Home signed a three album deal with the US based label, The End Records. First release is "Vale" on CD. The album is available worldwide as of January 12, 1998. As of August 11, 1998 the massive "Black Art" album, is also available through The End Records.

Magic was created one starlit night in July 1990, when Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and José Carreras met onstage at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and became the Three Tenors. They eschewed competitive instincts and cooperated in the spirit of mutual admiration to create one of the greatest musical events ever. This concert is an awe-inspiring orgy of the greatest hits for the tenor voice. Domingo and Pavarotti sing perfectly. The audience wins as these vocal supermen compete to seduce the hearts of the audience. One moment Domingo brings thrilling fire and pain to "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca; the next, Pavarotti rises to heavenly heights in an inspired rendition of "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. Carreras is the competent little brother, one step behind the greatness of the big brothers from opera's Ponderosa. His singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys; but his enthusiasm and passion are unrivaled. the item was delivered to me on-time and with no problems. however,i was looking for a DVD and not a audio Cd. might be good to clearly differentiate when the product is being advertised or shown.

Like so many of the reviewers here I am not an opera aficionado. But I sensed immediately the night I saw this concert on television that this was one of those 'remarkable' artistic events. Domingo and Pavarotti both have such strength and beauty in their voices that they overwhelm. Carreras adds flavor and enthusiasm.
One of the most remarkable music performances I have seen.

You can read the technical information about the contents of this CD above. That is not what this review is about. I became intrested in opera about 1 1/2 years ago because of happening upon Mario Lanza. Since then, I have experienced many great truly operatic voices, including the "King," Pavarotti.
If you are just discovering opera, suffice it to say; Buy this album!!! It was the concert that launched the 3 Tenors phenomenon. It is full of uplifting, heart- tugging favorites, and you will find yourself listening to it over and over. Buy the dvd as well. It imparts absolute electricity! I am a young pianist and vocalist, and this concert is truly inspiring to me! You won't regret one penny you spend on this!
Great singing from the three tenors.......2005-06-23
This cd is a must-have for anyone interested in opera - or beautiful singing. And when you're at it - why don't buy the dvd from the concert? It will make you appreciate the cd even more.
First of all I have to comment on the editorial review of this cd. I felt the reviewer is "belittling" José Carreras here by saying he's one step behind the big brothers and his singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys.....?!?!? Of course I can only speak for myself, but I feel she's way out of line. And I'm starting to wonder if she's been listening to the cd at all? In my opinion you have to be dead not to be touched by his rendition of "Lamento di Federico" and "L'improvviso". If anybody can deliver a line it has to be Carreras. When it comes to his interpretation of "Granada" even conductor Zubin Mehta was gobsmacked. Watching the dvd you can see him putting down his baton and applauding. He even steps down from his podium to hug José.
I have to say I'm not too keen on the two other tenors, although I have to admit I loved Pavarotti's "Torna a Surriento" and "Rondine al nido". The thing about Pavarotti is that he has a great singing technique and he's also in possession of this "push-button" which make him sing a lot of high notes, but that alone isn't enough to stir emotion.
As for Domingo, even if he's giving it all in every song, and his "No puede ser" was great,I think he's a bit too much on the nasal side. He's okay when they all perform together, but his "E lucevan le stelle" is sending shivers down my spine - and not of delight. I'm practically unable to sit still and listen to his solos. If you really want "fire and pain" you should check out Carreras in the Tosca-recording from -80, or his recording from -76. It's really breathtaking and I promise you'll end up in tears!
At the end of this concert the three tenors perform a medley together. Their voices blend perfectly and it's powerful to listen to them giving it all. A lot of people are talking about their mis-pronounciations. I for one, think it only adds to the charm of the performers. Pavarotti has some problems with the English songs (okay, big problems..), Domingo stumbles in the words in the beginning of "Wien Wien nur du allein", and (this you'll see in the dvd) in the same song Carreras is actually reading the text from a piece of paper as he's singing and his facial expressions when getting his head around the German words are really hilarious. O sole mio as an encore is fabulous when Pavarotti pushes his button and shakes out all his high notes.... And I love it when the two other join forces and repeat his stunt to perfection.
All in all this is a wonderful album. And well worth 5 stars.... José alone gets 10 stars!!!

This CD is terrific on so many levels. In celebration of one of the world's great sporting events - the World Cup of football (soccer to us stateside), three great tenors and one masterful conductor (Zubin Mehta) were brought together in one of the world's great cities - Rome -- for a special evening that we are blessed to have been able to listen to again and again.
The concert was held during the World Cup in 1990 at the Baths of Caracella, which are ruins of the once great Roman baths. In this beautiful setting Luiciano Pavrotti, Jose Carreas and Placido Domingo came together for one of the best CD's ever made.
The singing is exquisite. The passion of the crowd in this live performance should equal the reaction of the listener. This is art at its highest level. It is a celebration of great music, not just of opera, but in my opinion, the soaring human spirit. What power to move the soul! You don't need to be an opera fan to enjoy this music. If you like any kind of music, you cannot help but be affected by the power of this special evening. And what an evening, those in attendance were lucky to have been there!!
The casual listener will already know some of these arias, as they are from some the great operas of all time. However, I believe even the most hardenend opera fan, unless he or she is a real stiff, cannot be helped to be but moved by this music.
It is heavenly! I recommend this CD to you, because in my humble opinion, it will bring sunshine to your heart!!! : )

I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.
A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17
Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.
Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.
Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22
Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!
Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02
I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.
Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.

First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20
I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has alternately described his band's third album as "completely over the top" and "borderline psychotic." Such a great product!!!! The cd was filled with great songs and the 72-page book kept me reading all night. The book really helps you see the struggles MCR went through as a band to get to where they are now and there's great commentary on each of the songs by members of the band. I highly reccommend this to any true MCR fan!! And even if you're not a fan, you'd still enjoy it.

NOTE I DON'T HATE EMOS BUT COME ON, DON'T YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY OR WEAR ,OTHER THAN PAIN OR BLACK ! Anyways the music is good ,gives you the feel of The Sex Pistols and the Hard Punk Pop Rock feel .What kills It ,is the Girl voice of Gerard Way that Fu****cks Everything up .And the whining lyrics .DON'T BUY THIS IF YOUR NOT EMO ,And If you are emo your a proud fan :::)

Love the "fuzzy box". You get the Black Parade album (explicit-tho the "clean" version is really not) and an in-depth booklet journey into the minds and madness from writing the album at the haunted hotel "The Paramour". Some of the songs are explained by various group members. We see into the thoughts of a very cool band on top of their game doubting themselves on the eve of a tour explosion in 2006/7-they did not see the overwhelming response it would bring around the world. Wish it had been released first or I had known about the collector set first-now I have 3, yes, 3 Black Parade CD's (original-which is now scratched to pieces from overplay, fuzzy box CD & "Clean" version which I still can't play at work. Get the box-definitely.
Worth 200 million stars.......2007-04-07
My Chemical Romance is by far one of the best bands out there, and this album proves it. You can see how much this band put into their work and how empowering everything is. I have this limited edition version of the Black Parade and it is amazing. The extra cards are so cool and the booklet is hard to put down. Then there's the cd...oh the cd. It's one of the best cd's I own and it really shows MCR's growth.

Welcome to the Black Parade- This is the definition of a rock opera. It has all sorts of different parts to it that makes it so epic.
I Don't Love You- Such a sad song, watch the music video and see how emotional Gerard Way (the lead singer) is. so sad! (I love Gerard!!)
House of Wolves- Another of my favorite songs, it is so energetic and lively!!!
Cancer- Also sad, not one of my personal favorites but it is a really beautiful song
Mama- A different song, but still awesome. It sounds so cool...enough said
Sleep- Very, very sad. Especially when you hear a man at the end say "I can't even wake up." *tear*
Teenagers- The chorus of this song is so addictive. It's a song that make you want to get up and jump around...
Disenchanted- Yet another sad song with a little bit of a faster pace. I can't describe this song really, just listen to it...it's good.
Famous Last Words- WOW!!!!!!!!! Most definately the BEST SONG EVER!!!! My favorite song by MCR!! In the lyrics, music, and video they are really giving it there all.
Hidden Track: Blood- A hilarious song that has sort of the music style like Mama in a way.
My Chemical Romance is an amazing band. At first I hated them, thinking that they were just some Green Day wannabe's because they dressed like them and now had the same producer. But I never listened to them and I was so0o0o0o0o0o0o0o wrong. They are totally different in a good way, and I love both Green Day and My Chemical Romance. They have incredibly enchanting lyrics and riffs that just blow me away. They are not emo, or goth. They consider themselves punk rock or simply just rock for the most part. Don't judge them before you listen to them with an open mind. Just listen and you'll see....

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Minor quibbles can be made about every record King Crimson has ever released, unsurprising as their output has been spread over 39 years and numerous lineups. However, the astonishing recordings of Trio and Fracture elevate this to the pantheon; how many bands have, or will ever have, the range and vision required to produce this music? Recommended listening for any musician who wishes to understand the possibilities of improvisation.
Nice studio tracks and excellent live performances.......2007-05-29
This 1974 release by King Crimson presents a nice mixture of studio tracks and live tracks. With respect to the live tracks, We'll Let You Know was a purely improvisational piece taken from a concert held in Glasgow Scotland, while The Mincer (another improvised jam) was recorded in Zurich, Switzerland and overdubbed in the studio. Three tracks including Trio; Fracture; and Starless and Bible Black were recorded at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as was the introduction to The Night Watch (the remainder was recorded in the studio). For those of you that are curious, the complete Amsterdam Concertgebouw concert was released by the band as The Night Watch, which is a fantastic sounding 2-CD document of this powerful lineup live.
The lineup on this album is considered to be the finest Crimson lineup assembled and I do not disagree. The players at this point included David Cross (violin, viola, mellotron); Robert Fripp (electric guitar; mellotron; and devices); John Wetton (electric bass guitar; lead vocals); and the incredible Bill Bruford (drums and percussion). The performances on the live tracks are out of this world and amply demonstrate the power of this group as an improvisational unit of considerable power and imagination. Robert Fripp turns in some excellent performances throughout (his complex, cross-picking technique really shines on the closing track) and seems to favor a heavily distorted tone played at bone-crushing volumes - he is however, capable of some delicate playing as well. John Wetton seems to favor taking the same approach on the bass guitar and his thunderous bass lines rumble throughout - like Fripp, John is also capable of some fairly delicate playing. I was also happy to hear David Cross and his delicate violin/viola parts emerge from the chaos - unfortunately, his playing really took a back seat on the follow-up album Red (1974).
The eight tracks on the album range in length from 3'46 to 11'14" and include a few studio tracks (The Great Deceiver and Lament) and the aforementioned live tracks. Although some of the live tracks generate enough raw electrical power to blow the earth up ten times over, Trio is a very tranquil piece that just features violin, bass guitar, mellotron, and flute. Apparently, Bill Buford felt that Trio was perfect as it was and decided not to add drums during the live performance - in fact, the band appreciated this gesture and gave him a co-credit. The Night Watch is another quiet and mellotron saturated piece that breaks things up nicely. Although the studio tracks are nice and present a wide range in dynamics, it is the crushing volume and avant-garde tendencies of the improvised tracks that really hold my attention.
All in all, this is a good album released during a very creative period for King Crimson along with Lark's Tongues in Aspic (1973) and Red. Although I can't say that I like this album as much as the other two from this period, this is still high quality progressive rock and is recommended along with In the Court of the Crimson King (1969); Lizard (1970); Lark's Tongues in Aspic; and Red.
Another overatted album by King Crimson.......2007-05-10
I just can't listen to this album, I know many of you rate it as a masterpiece, but I don't. The music has no emotion, just as cold as Mr. Fripp can be. I don't fell anything when I am listening to it.
I consider myself as an open mind and I am always ready to discover new things, this album might have been "hot" thirty years ago, but it is very dated in the 21st century ! I gave mine to a friend, giving space in my cd collection for something else.
no one touches The King.......2007-02-26
king crimson is the byfar the greatest & one of the most creative "prog" rock bands to come out of the late 60s/early 70s next to pink floyd & ELP. this album is no less. it doesn't top larks' tongue in aspic or in the court of the crimson king, but it stands next to them, for sure & openly defines this band as a milestone in the more experimental/art rock of the early 70s.
if you are unfamiliar to king crimson's sound, than i'd recommend picking up the latter albums i previously stated. even to this day, king crimson still does not get the recognition they deserve, but in this day in age, maybe it was better that way. they still have countless fans the world around & are one of the most influential rock bands in past 40 years.

The Best of Mark-Almond is a compelling retrospective of the band's most inventive and best-loved songs. We all know the distinctive sound this innovative English band was exploring in the late 60s and early 70s, carving out a niche in the unchartered territory between rock and jazz. Although the saxophone was rarely heard in pop music at that time, the smoky, melancholy tones of reedman Johnny Almond were an integral part of the group's sound. Characterized by an innovative blend of blues licks, jazz riffs, Latin beats, and rock sensibilities, and in counterpoint to the screaming guitar licks of his contemporaries, Jon Mark, the composer and band leader, lingered over subtle, melodic lines with a unique sense of warmth and intimacy. The resulting sound captured the attention of respected jazzman, Dannie Richmond. The American drummer took a leave of absence from a steady gig with Charles Mingus to tour and record with Mark-Almond.

The Best of Mark-Almond, the group's early explorations of Latin/jazz/rock fusion are balanced by pensive, spatially oriented ballads. The City, one of Mark-Almond's earliest hits, is still a classic of smoldering intensity. The Sausalito Bay Suite, ventures into imaginative montages of sound and emotion, while the impressionistic tunes like Tuesday In New York, and One Way Sunday, softly whisper lyrics with an innate sense of drama and a deft twist of phrase. The elements add up to a release that is a pleasure to listen to, at the same time illustrating Mark-Almond's status as one of the most innovative bands in the history of jazz-rock fusion.

I have had their albums for years I so glad that they finally released the cd I first heard them on an album by John Mayall Turning Point. They were great then but their own albums are a very jazz and rock blend they are very good musicians I have enjoyed their music for years. One track I really like is called the City they have a few different version of this track on most of their albums.
A Special Place in Time and Memory.......2001-06-16
No one had ever heard anything like Mark Almond when MA No. 1 appeared sometime in 1971. "The Ghetto" was this amazing vocal bombast steeped in deep gospel with a searing saxophone solo stuck in the cracks, and "The City" began as some samba-ish lament that evolved into a ecstatic piano and saxophone duet, then faded off into an electric and acoustic guitar jam.. for 13 minutes! Mark-Almond 2 was probably as responsible as anything for the influx of people into San Francisco and the Bay Area in the mid to late 70s: certainly most of us had heard "The Sausalito Bay Suite" under the influence of one thing or another and decided then and there to go "down by the bay/the seagulls play/in circles...". Now that those decades are behind me, as well as my days as a San Franciscan, I still find the best memento is Mark Almond 2. It captures a Californian and world-weary sensibility tinged with existential melancholy that one only gets living by the Golden Gate in the pre dot.com era.
As for the rest here, well, Mark-Almond took a creative nosedive after albums One and Two, and it is evident here. Why the dumbest dingbat at Rhino decided to include "Get Yourself Together" on this set eludes me; it's wholly embarrassing.
Nevertheless, the price is justified by the inclusion of "The City" and "The Ghetto". Incredible stuff that dates very well.
Timeless and not to be pigeon-holed..........2000-04-22
The Mark-Almond Band produced a sound that was not exactly progressive rock, sophisticated jazz-pop, or folk, but a masterful and seamless blend of these styles. I daresay even a die-hard "alternative" fan who might dismiss this as boring old "hippie" music could listen to a song like "Tramp And The Young Girl", and hear seminal echoes of Tinderbox or the Eels in its dark, haunting and morose beauty. "The Ghetto" and "The City" are worth the price of this CD alone, with thier compelling acoustic jazz grooves and hypnotic vocals. If you follow electic artists like John Martyn, or of more recent vintage, Beth Orton, then you'll love this stuff. [edit]

Damnation is a complex and often acoustic album that demonstrates beyond question Opeth's high regard for the sweet harmonies and post-psychedelic atmospherics of '70s rockers such as Camel, Steve Hackett, and, especially, Barclay James Harvest. Which isn't to say this is a retro album; the aforementioned bands have been left out of rock history to such a degree that it's as if they never existed at all. Then there's Opeth's own pedigree. Steeped in the bloodier aspects of metal, singer Mikael Akerfeldt has no time for sweet love or fanciful flights of fantasy; he's trapped in post-relationship depression, drowning in loneliness and regret. His voice drifts beautifully over and under the band's dark folk and hypnotic soft-rock progressions, as chiming twin guitars that recall Wishbone Ash drop casually in and out. opeth always has good stuff to offer. their music shifts from being brutal, with death grunts and all a la "when" (my arms, your hearse), to nice quiet acoustic pieces like "patterns in the ivy part 2" (blackwater park). no matter which album or song opeth throws out, it's always a gem, shifting your emotions from tense and on edge, to relaxed and dreamy. but this time, in spite of all the diamonds opeth has been releasing, i wholeheartedly confess that "damnation" is a ruby.
generally, opeth is known for a variety of things, such as songs that span for well over 10 minutes, mikael akerfeldt's proficiency in both clean vocals and death grunts, martin lopez's drumming, etc. i know them best for making absolutely stunning songs, particularly the quieter, slower ones where the guitars aren't overdriven, where akerfeldt's vocals are clean and conjure up a sense of longing, and such. simply put, opeth made this album beautiful.
when listening to "in my time of need," you can imagine yourself treading slowly through a big city on a traffic-less night, a light rain falling as you contemplate over the meaning of life after a broken relationship. "closure" brings about images of folk music in a forest, in a moor, or in a traditional european/celtic setting. "weakness" makes you feel as if you're in an empty cathedral, ready to make a confession, with per wilberg's haunting, flow-and-eb keyboard/mellotron/organ background.
when all's said and done, "damnation" is definitely one of the best slower, quieter albums out there. despite the fact that it's totally underrated, like i said before, it's that one ruby in a world full of coal.
They can do more than just play very loudly.......2007-04-19
Opeth is a metal band, but Damnation is not a metal album. It is the second half of a broken up double album, and is almost purely progressive rock. Deliverance, which was released about six months earlier, is supposed to be one of their hardest records, and this is quite a counterbalance to that. Opeth is known for switching between hard and soft moments, and that's part of why I liked Ghost Reveries, but without that, they are free to just let the softer stuff do what it wants, and it becomes a more enjoyable overall record. Despite his growling, he can definitely sing, and they don't seem out of place doing music like this.
"Windowpane" proves you can be good at regular guitar playing and fast-paced metal shredding. The more downplayed musicianship is combined with creepy sounding ambiance and strong vocals, and this combination is heard throughout. My favorite part is the end of "Closure" which combines different kind of music to create an awesome sounding groove that could last forever if it wanted to. The whole thing is a bit brief compared to their other stuff, which makes some sense considering it was once just half of an album. It's quite entertaining while it lasts, and shows how much range a band can have.
Unique And Powerful.......2007-04-04
This is the BEST space metal CD ever done! It is lyrically as dark as any death metal but musically closer to Pink Floyd and early King Crimson. The band uses some fascinating chord progessions and time signatures to create a consistently creepy atmosphere that is second to none. This CD is really an art rock masterpiece.
Haunting Electric Folk Rock .......2007-03-21
"Damnation" is one of the best and most unique releases in Opeth's ever growing resume of impressive recordings. Originally planned as a mellow companion piece for the experimental death metal of "Deliverence," the material proved to be strong enough to stand on its own two weary feet. By no means the standard thrown together soft songs one would expect from a metal act, the band and genius producer, Steve Wilson, put as much effort and ambition into the recordings as they did on the heavier counterpart. Oddly enough, what could have been their most limited album ends up being perhaps their most adventerous.
Akerfeld and Lindgren's expressive electirc guitars weep and moan like melancholy ghosts, while the folky acoustics are seductively dark and mysterious. Lopez(drums) and Mendez(bass) form the backbone of the album with tight tragic grooves you can tap your foot to. Eerily filling out the background Wilson uses spooky organs, keys, piano and other subtle effects to enhance the bittersweet rainy day atmpshere. While the music could be described as mellow there is often a nervous, suspenseful energy as well as not so vague hints of something more sinister perhaps even evil lurching beneath the surface. In top form, Akerfeldt convincingly croons the gloomy lyrics like a long dead phantom longing for the return of a lost love that will never come back; his weary voice frail but incredibly rich in understated emotion.
Despite the group's progressive rock roots and influences, most of the songs are tightly structured in a digestable pop format complete with tension building verses and releasing memorable choruses you can sing a long to.( Though the music is a great deal more busy and dense than most pop structured rock obviously.) The urgent but lengthy opener "Windowpane" is the exception with it's tasteful solos and instrumental passages. Other exceptions include: the mourning guitar led instrumental "End Credits" and the quiet bluesy Avant Garde of "Weakness ". Other highlights include the climatic "Closure," which is the only time the band really breaks lose and goes into a lengthy, menacing freak out jam that makes the heavier moments of their other albums sound like child's play; even without the benefit of distorted guitars and growled vocals. "Hope Leaves" might also be the band's most beautiful if not sorrowful moment with it's chiming autumn rain melodies and moving vocals.
Very surprising.......2007-03-13
This was my first Opeth CD; I picked it up based on a recommendation from a co-worker. Initially, I was disappointed as I was expecting something heavier. Later I learned that this is Opeth's most mellow album: You won't hear any "death grunts" on this CD! After listening to (and purchasing) more Opeth CDs, I now appreciate this CD more, but still prefer some of their heavier stuff.
Very good music. If you're into progressive rock (yes, rock, not metal) then give this a try.

Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27
I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.
I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.
I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator
Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20
This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09
This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

Before there were the Three Tenors there was Jussi Björling, the great Swedish tenor who died in 1960 at the age of 49. His bright, sunny tone had a slight, emotion-laden tear in it that conveyed feeling as well as, or more than, any number of sobs and effects that other tenors use. His Carnegie Hall recital of September 24, 1955 has long been available; in addition, this CD features nine never-before released selections from that recital which either did not fit on the original LP or were omitted for some other reason. He can sing at any dynamic level, the voice is always secure, and his taste and musicianship, as always, are impeccable. I doubt we'll ever hear Tosti's Ideale sung more tenderly or "Che gelida manina" sung with such poetic abandon; the newly discovered Grieg, Sibelius, and Sjoberg songs are sung with an opera singer's--rather than a Lieder singer's--style, but it's doubtful anyone will complain. Björling fans should race to hear this; for those who came to opera after his heyday (or during the reign of other tenors), this will be a stunning ear-opener. A must have. --Robert Levine

Magnificent.......2005-09-02
Some years ago I met an elderly gentleman who'd served as a co-pilot on a B-24 bomber during WWII. During a raid on a North German site their aircraft was badly damaged and they were forced to crash-land it in Sweden. The shaken but uninjured crew was picked up by the Swedish authorities and immediately interred (Sweden being a neutral country). They were sent to a dreadful and notorious Swedish internment camp--the largest and lushest hotel in Stockholm--and given something of an expense account. It just happened to be the same hotel where Jussi Bjorling had his digs.
Through a variety of happenings, the vet ended up befriending Bjorling, who he described to me as "one hell of a nice guy" and they became drinking buddies. He and his fellow aviators had front row seats at any and all recitals and apparently became society figures in cultured Stockholm. To my wonder and astonishment, this old Regular Joe fellow, no opera fan before Sweden, told me he was the guy who taught Jussi Bjorling the song "Pistol Packin' Mama." Now wouldn't we all pay good money to have heard him sing that!!
There's nothing more terrific than a great voice attached to a great guy who'd sit and drink with downed aviators and happily learn their favorite pop songs. This disc of music is as wonderful as the guy who recorded it.

In a word - superb. This brings to mind the review of Bjorling's RCA LP "Bjorling in Opera" by Stereo Review's critic George Jellinek, shortly after it's release in 1959, which he ended by saying "highly recommended, especially for other tenors".
Frederick's Understatement........2004-12-22
It was 50 years ago that I met and fell in love with
the accompanist at the voice studio where I studied
for love of singing (i.e., mine was a modest voice).
She in turn introduced me to some of the great singers
then active, or who came through, Chicago. And also, her
own teachers and colleagues, including Dr. Rudolf Ganz and
Frederick Schauwecker. One day, when the topic of melody
came up, Dr Ganz suggested that all piano students should
hear Jussi Bjoerling deliver legato melody. And when Lynn
asked Mr. Shauwecker, who little praised anyone, even a client,
how Jussi did on the trip they were just back from, she was
astonished to hear him grudgingly admit that "Jussi is singing
like an angel. It can't possibly continue at such a level, even
for him." It didn't. As we found out a couple of weeks later
when we heard this recital live, it didn't "continue", it got
better. At the time I found it the greatest listening experience
of my life. Today, 50 years later, it still is. Whatever vocal
records you have by anyone, this is better. There are no equals.
"Like an angel" is one of Frederick's understatements.
Remastering is not perfect.......2004-07-20
This CD is a recording of one Carnegie Hall recital on September 24, 1955. Many composers are represented, including Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, Grieg and Sibelius to name a few. There is even a Stephen Foster - Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair. The accompanying literature has all the lyrics.
Jussi Bjorling is obvious a tenor in top form, but this recording forty years later omits the higher overtones of his voice. Nevertheless, this is a recording of the highest caliber that does justice to this talented man who died too young.
THE ultimate singing voice.......2004-05-22
This live concert cd contains some of the most fantastic singing ever by a human being and that goes both for the lyric and the dramatic repertoire. Why RCA have denied us this fabulous sound for all these years really beats me. I have long cherished Bjoerlings Troubadour recording with RCA, but compared to the Bjoerling sound on this cd, his Manrico sounds like a light Wiener Sänger. The sound on this cd is simply the most ravishing sound I have ever heard.

A nice little disc for ultra Pixies fans. I especially enjoyed the acoustic disc and Frank's vocals have even improved with age.
But Frank's version of "Into the White" comes no where near Kim's. Sorry.
Tired And Emotional.......2006-02-08
Kurt Cobain said Nirvana stole all their best ideas from them, key Radiohead members Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke have similarly emphasised their debt to them, U2 were so enraptured with them that they took them on the Zoo TV tour as special guests and even David Bowie claims they breathed new life into music in the 1980s. If you're new to this act The Pixies that everyone is raving about since their reformation, don't start your collection by snapping up this solo CD set from head Pixie Charles Thompson IV (hunt down Death To The Pixies as a greatest hits taste-test to begin with, then grab a copy of Doolittle and Surfer Rosa). However, if you're a fully fledged fan of The Pixies, Frank Black Francis acts as an even greater revelation than the less expansive but similar period's Pixies (also known as The Purple Tape), with the first of the two CDs (Demo) showcasing Black Francis's 1987 acoustic outlines of all the tracks (bar Levitate Me) that would make it to debut album Come On Pilgrim, as well as Surfer Rosa's Broken Face, Break My Body and Oh My Golly. I've Been Tired reveals a measure of Jack White in Frank's erratic yelps, while the sketchy demos also interestingly include Frank's comments to producer Gary Smith such as "There's supposed to be screaming here" mid-song. Such a rough compilation was never meant to be released, yet Black's fully-formulated idea of how he wished Come On Pilgrim to sound makes the first disc compelling for completists. Of lesser note is the woozy bass-heavy revisionism of The Pixies' legacy on disc two (Treated), although Frank concedes in the liner notes this re-recorded and re-interpreted collection was only put together to bolster the musical content of the Frank Black Francis package. While Where Is My Mind? and Nimrod's Son are interesting due to their `Frank On Tranqs' malaise, similarly classic tracks such as Cactus and Levitate Me don't work quite so well in this sluggish sonic territory. Nonetheless, replacing savage guitars and shrieking howls for tubas and keyboards on awesome tunes such as Monkey Gone To Heaven and The Holiday Song shows Frank is commendably unafraid to experiment with his classic tracks. While such reinvention has divided many fans, the creativity on display on both discs creates an exceptional stop-gap between his 2003 solo album Show Me Your Tears and (fingers crossed) the next Pixies album.
LOVE IT, DISC 2 IS BRILLIANT!.......2005-12-28
I've been a Pixies fan since 89 and have followed Frank Black and his other bandmates other projects since the group broke up. The Pixies were great, and seeing the reunion tour was fun, but it didn't really excite me in the way of new ideas or material. Where the music was once fresh and innovative, it's 15 years later and without new material or any updating of the songs, it just seemed like too much nostalgia. (At least hearing Pixies versions of some Catholics or solo FB or Breeders or Martinis tunes would have been interesting) Disc 2 here remedies that! FB teams up with the duo Two Pale Boys to reinvent the songs so that they sound just as playful imaginitive and whacked as they did 14+ years ago. One of the best parts is that the lyrics stand out more in this format, you can hear what FB's saying and follow the stories. It's just so fun. I hope Francis & the Pixies record some new material that is this bright. Disc 1 is good too, but to me it's more a trip down memory lane, not a step forward.
A must-have for hardcore fans.......2005-12-09
Frank Black/Black Francis is one of the most significant artists of the last 25 years and is still making incredible music with his latest band. These 2 discs are really an oddity, but for any hardcore fan they offer unique musical perspectives on some of the most classic Pixies stuff ever. Yes, the first disc is much more lively interesting, a rare sonic insight into early Pixies. But the second disc will sneak up on you as well if you love the songs.
Not sure what to make of it.......2005-09-24
This set comes on two discs. One is early demo tracks of Pixies songs performed by just Frank Black and his guitar. Two is what I can only describe as reminaginings of classic Pixies songs.
The demos are amazing. Raw, a little dirty in the sound quality, and rough around the edges. It's like listening to old friends who were recorded before I met them.
The re-imagined versions are a whole other thing. It's not that I feel like hey have no business messing with classic songs this way. I love to hear different versions of the same song. It's just that I'm not sure I like the style in which it was done. Some, like "Cactus" and "Where is My Mind" are cleverly done enough. But as a whole the tracks come off as unfocused and even, in a couple of cases, boring.
Still, they are Mr. Black's songs to let people mess with as he wishes.
I'm not going to call it horrible, but I'm not sure very Pixies fan will be into this. In fact I'm sure some will outright hate it.
