Customer Reviews:
The german Schlager in general and Udo in particular.......2001-04-30
I'm Swiss, 42 years old and mainly a 70's Rock fan. Concerning modern music there were just two inputs from my parents side. In 1976 my father to everybody's surprise started to listen to Barry White, whom I've come to appreciate myself. More recently I heard my mother play an Udo Juergens cassette. (By the way if she's right then contrary to his claim of 66 Udo is about 70 years old - she remembers fancying him as a young girl in Vienna when, about the same age, he just started his career). In any case, he is still going strong. Udo Juergens is what Germans call a "Schlagersaenger". As opposed to other languages (English, French, Italian, Spanish,..) this term has a somewhat negative connotation in German speaking countries. I suppose these are some reasons: Germans (at least the older folks) tend to draw a line between serious music (e.g. classic) and inferior popular music (Unterhaltungsmusik). Furthermore, I believe it i s in fact more difficult to sing popular music in German because it's harder to find rhymes that make sense. Or maybe German speaking folks are just genetically less musical than other peoples. All the Schlagersaenger that I know of sound cheesy (schmalzig) more often than singers of another tongue. Fortunately a couple of them get it right every now and then. Let me mention Alexandra, Daliah Lavi, Peter Maffay, and of course Udo Juergens.
As to the latter, the two compilations "Aber bitte mit Sahne" I and II really minimize the Schmalz and offer some great tunes. My favorites on II are Lieb Vaterland, Traumschiff, Rot blueht der Mohn, Liebe ohne Leiden. I hate to admit it but occasionally the melodies almost (not quite - whence only 4 stars) measure up to the best of the Beatles, Moody Blues, or YES.

Sodom does it best EP style.......2004-11-30
Sodom is one of the "big 3" German thrash bands from the 80's with Kreator and Destruction. All three continue to pump out high quality, old school thrash.
Sodom saves only the best for their EP's. While only 4 songs, this is their best release to date. I've owned this since it was first released, and it has never left my car. It is impossible not to play this over and over. The production is very crisp and powerful and the flow of the songs, from slow to fast, is very invigorating.
Guitarist Anthony Brings, with his low-tuned hardcore style, lends the band their most powerful sound of their 20-years-and-counting career. He reigned from Tapping the Vein (1992) through Masquerade in Blood (1995).
Here are the tracks:
1. Aber bitte mit Sahne (3:14) - So bad, yet so good! This is a cover of a German pop song by Rückkehr Nach Mendocino. The lyrics are completely in German. This sounds like cheesy Poison-style 80's glam rock, yet tuned WAY down and belted out Sodom style. The first time you hear it, you're likely to think, "What the f---?" But, it's so powerful; you'll be drawn to play it over and over.
2. Sodomized (2:37) - The same tune later released on the "Get What You Deserve" album (1994), but this version is much more powerful and the mix is better. Angelripper is absolutely pounding on the bass during the chorus. This one always gets my adrenaline pumping.
3. Abuse (1:43) - The highlight of this release. Once again, very powerful--adrenalin keeps pumping. It has a very heavy hardcore influence that the band adopts for their next few albums. The perverse lyrics are fun, especially the final scream, "Screw for deliverance!!!"
4. Skinned Alive '93 (2:30) - Sodom's fastest song to date. This shreds. Rerecording of the song from their previous album, Tapping the Vein, clocking 13 seconds faster. It's much tighter than the first recording as well. By the time you're through this number, you'll be so spent from the adrenalin rush that you'll have to wind-down with "Aber..." And it starts all over again...

GREAT MUSIC FOR LISTENING OR PUMPING UP THE PARTY........1999-10-07
AT LAST I HAVE UDO IN MY CD COLLECTION. I HEARD MUCH OF UDO ON THE RADIO WHILST I LIVED IN GERMANY BUT NEVER THOUGHT TO BUY ANY RECORDINGS. I ENJOY LISTENING LISTENING TO THIS CD 'COS IT HAD MOST OF THE SONGS IN HIS REPOTOIRE & IT WAS GREAT TO HEAR THEM AGAIN. I BELIEVE UDO TO BE A VERY ACCOMPLISHED AND DEDICATED MUSICIAN WHO SINGS WITH AS MUCH STIRRING GUSTO AS HE PLAYS THE PIANO. FORTUNATELY BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND GERMAN I HAVE THE EXTRA BENEFIT OF UNDERSTANDING THE LYRICS WHICH IN THEMSELVES ARE INTERESTING. BUT EVEN WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS YOU CAN ENJOY THIS MUSIC BY SIMPLY LISTENING OR YOU CAN USE IT TO MAKE A PARTY SWING .
un po' demodè, ma sempre di grande effetto.......1999-07-15
Peccato che in Italia i cantanti tedeschi non siano molto popolari
Good selection of Udo Jürgens' best-known songs.......1999-05-13
Making a selection from Udo Jürgens' repertoire: a repertoire spanning 30 years and over 500 songs, with musical styles ranging from pop to jazz and classical, could never be easy. This well-arranged CD has made a good attempt. The famous Udo songs are naturally here- 'Siebzehn Jahr, blondes Haar'; 'Ich war noch niemals in New York' ; 'Griechisher Wein', and of course the marvellously satirical 'Aber bitte mit Sahne'. The versions featured here (1967-1991) cover most of his career although technically the tear-jerker 'Merci Cherie' and 'Warum nur Warum' are older. Incidentally, both were Austrian Eurovision Song Contest entries, with Merci Cherie winning in 1966. If a song was ever written to show off Udo's voice it has to be the latter one: pure rich black-velvet power! The collection shows the subtle change in his style over the years, from the 'crooner' 'Immer wieder geht die Sonne aus' to the electro-pop influence of 1991's 'Na und..?'. Whatever the period though, he remains true to his unique mix of jazz, big band and classical-influenced pop. Swinging between satire ('Ein ehrenwertes Haus' , 'mit 66 Jahren'), romance ('Merci Cherie') to the upbeat 'Hautnah' and the fragile hope in 'Ihr von Morgen', he manages to cover most human moods. No Udo 'greatest hits' would be complete without an example of his charismatic live performances and here we have a 9-minute version of the moody '5 Minuten vor 12' with full orchestration. Also included are a selection of the medleys that are such a popular feature of his concerts. Having for many years written the team songs for Germany's World Cup Soccer team, it is natural to have one here: 1978's 'Buenos Dias Argentina' with its distinctly Latin feel. OK, so what's the downside to this CD? Well, as a collection of Udo Jürgens' music, it's precisely what the subtitle says: his greatest hits. As with all compilations, the commercial big guns are here, for that's what sells; but it can never truly reflect the man's range and unfortunately, by definition, misses some of his lovliest songs. To be fair however, I find it difficult to see how one CD could achieve this scope. Also, more sleeve information would have been a bonus. If you like Udo Jürgens, you probably have this already. If you're just browsing, don't speak much or any German but are curious: just try it for the music - you might just find something you recognise. It will be a cover of the Udo Jürgens' original...
