To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood

Album Description

There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Music.......2007-08-03

I bought this for a friend of mine who loved his rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". She didn't know who sang it but we listened to it at her birthday party and this was it. Just Iz and his ukeleli. Anyway, we enjoyed the rest of the album too. His style was so gentle and pure.
The world lost one of it's beautiful spirits.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening.......2007-07-30

This is my second CD by IZ I will keep collecting his music as long as he keeps producing it. It offers a taste of pure Hawaii. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air!.......2007-07-28

Iz and his music are truely a breath of fresh air in a world full of cookie cutter music. He's a master of the ukulele, and has a voice as sweet and clear as a warm Hawaiian day. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is beyond perfection. It fills the soul with joy and lifts you above the clouds...above the rainbow. A must for the Hawaiian music collector.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to a happy place.......2007-07-23

I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere over the Rainbow", but do enjoy the entire range of songs. Would recommend it, however, I probably will not buy any more of his stuff; a little goes a long way.

5 out of 5 stars You need this classic for your Hawaiian music collection.......2007-07-21

This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

3 out of 5 stars It was GOOD but not WONDERFUL.......2007-07-31

I have almost all of IZs albums and that's the reason I bough this one. It was then, that I realized that it was "arranged" with a big orchestra. I guess it is OK to listen to because his voice and the orchestrations are nice on their own, but I'm not crazy about it because I cannot think they necessarily go toghether well. It is probably just me, but I like his voice and his ukalele sound much better. It is still GOOD, don't get me wrong...but it's just my preference. But I loved the presentation...the cover is beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful World.......2007-07-28

The music on this CD is absolutely wonderful. In my opinion, Iz is one of the all time greats, especially for Hawaiian music. I have all of his CD's, and play them over and over. I recommend his albums to everyone. I think once you listen, you will be hooked. Happy Listening.

I LOVE IZ'S MUSIC! HE SING FROM HIS HEART TO YOUR SOUL. I HAVE MOST OF THE SONGS THAT ARE ON THIS CD HERE ALREADY BUT THIS CD HERE HAS HIM SINGING WITH AN ORCHESTRA. AHH THE MAGIC MIXERS OF OUR TIME. THE ORCHESTRA / IZ WHAT MORE CAN YOU WANT! BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL... A GIFT FROM GOD

1 out of 5 stars WHAT!!.......2007-07-23

Why ANYONE would feel the need the "remake" or add to the music of IZ is way beyond me (other than the obvious - $$$$). Skip this one and pick up any one of his previous albums - Trust me, they're all you'll ever need!

4 out of 5 stars it is a good cd .......2007-07-22

I think that this is a good cd with the music of IZ, it has somewhat of a softer feeling to it.

The artist behind Facing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovely that it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovingly assembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World is comprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includes versions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "Mona Lisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn at harmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatingly beautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" are especially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard in Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester--may never again sound so pure. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars True Hawaiian.......2007-07-30

If you like Hawaiian music, IZ is the man. I love his renditions of Hawaiian and traditinal music. He has a beautiful voice. "Over the Rainbow",in his unique style, is a definite favorite. I play his CD's over and over again - a vicarious trip to the islands.

5 out of 5 stars one of a kind!.......2007-07-28

Iz was truely one of a kind. A multi talented singer and song writer, who can pull you into his music and surround you with the warmth of the islands. I highly recomend this CD. Great Hawaiian music that will be enjoyed by all.

4 out of 5 stars Alone In IZ World is worth a look.......2007-07-05

This was the first Israel Kamakawiwo'ole cd I had listened to. I think despite the fact that at least one of the songs (Mona Lisa) wasn't finished it's an excellent CD. The song "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is a beautiful Hawaiian rendition of an old Classic. The CD is lighthearted, fun, and introspective at times, offering a track with audio from Iz talking about his battle with obesity (something hardcore Iz fans might enjoy). The word: if you have all of his CD's and love IZ get this one, if this is your first purchase, buy another and work your way up to this one later.

5 out of 5 stars IZ.......2007-06-28

This is a special type of recording that not everyone would care for. It is what I would call a Kamaaina type of CD; i.e., if you like down home Hawaiian style, it's great. Having lived in HI for over 18 yrs, I really dig it. The reason I say this is that it's the type of recording that's rather "off-the-wall." There's false starts, talking and just plain uke strumming and picking up words as he goes along, but it's real. These are recordings as they actually happened rather than having been rehearsed. For those that have sat around a bonfire eating pig and poi, listening to uke players, I'm sure they will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and beautiful.......2007-06-27

The tracks on this album are beautiful from Iz's rendition of "Mona Lisa" to the now familiar "Over the Rainbow". What is most haunting is hearing Iz speaking on several tracks, especially his views about death and losing his family members. A definite must have.

Released in 1996, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known as IZ is much a part of Hawaii as the beautiful blue oceans. Every cut on this album you can hear the power and majesty that is IZ, which gets into the listeners' heart and soul. "In Dis Life" serves-up a mix of Hawaiian language standards, two hit tunes from local artists, several fresh new songs and a Jawaiian remake of "Starting All Over Again". A must have if you are a fan of IZ's other material.

IZ passed away but the recordings he left behind capture the real essence of Hawaii. All his albums are outstanding

5 out of 5 stars IZ.......2006-06-29

We discovered Iz while in Hawaii this past January. We have purchased all 6 of his CD's and all three of his DVD's. He has a beautiful voice, sense of humor, and love of his heritage and Hawaii. I just wish he was still with us to share himself. He is singing to God now and what a beautiful sound that must be. Thanks Iz for giving us your love and appreciation of Hawaii and what it means to the Hawaiian people.

5 out of 5 stars I'd say by far his best album........2006-05-14

Though all of his albums are recommended, no Israel Kamakawiwo'ole collection is complete without "In Dis Life." This album, I believe, is his best ever, despite the fact that it doesn't have his "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" medley on it. If you are looking for that particular song buy "Facing Future."

As for the selections on this CD, I particularly enjoy the title song, "Wai'alae," and his rendition of the Hawaiian Style Band's "Living in a Sovereign Land." The contemporary tunes show a different side of him. "'Opae E" has been a favorite of mine forever. I also like his jazzy rendition of "Aloha Ku'u Pua" and his medley of "Na Ka Puio" and "Keyhole Hula," otherwise known as "Kauoha Mai."

The only song that I think is just okay is "Yokozuna," at least for now, but maybe it'll grow on me eventually. I don't hate it though, just not one of my favorites. Maybe that's just because I would choose Hawaiian language songs over contemporary if I had to make a choice.

Please get this CD as well as all his others.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii's Favorite Braddah.......2006-04-22

I remember the year Braddah Iz died,I live in Waianae and it was a shock to the people of Hawaii.I remember the day of his funeral his ashes were scattered out to sea with his brother Skippy, people came from all over the island traffic was horrid, but it was for the love of the music this one man brought. I have lived most of my life in Hawaii, and have gotten to known the Hawaiian culture and music,my children are Hawaiian and have been blessed to been brought up with this man's music.Braddah Iz will always be apart of the Hawaiian aina, and culture and his music is still listened too this day........ God Bless Braddah Iz...and his family.

5 out of 5 stars Brings a smile everytime.......2004-11-09

My wife and I heard IZ for the first time while on our honeymoon back in June 1997 while on a Helicopter Ride over Kauai. The pilot was playing his music over our headset as background music. At the time we didn't even realize how nice the music was and didn't think to ask the pilot who was singing.

Several days later we were in a shop and once again I heard his voice over the stores speakers and had to have the CD. This is classic Hawaiian music that brings me back to Hawaii every time I hear his music...and that is far since I live in New York.

Several years later I looked him up on the Internet and was heartbroken to learn he passed away...a week after we left Hawaii. I have purchased every CD as well as DVD's that have become available.

IZ died with a huge heart and the world has lost a great singer that believed in Hawaii and the land that was meant to be. You would be surprise to hear how many times you hear his music in movies, commercials and shows. A performer that will be remembered forever.

Fiona Apple, brooding, brainy belter and capital-A artist of near forbidding depth, begins her much gossiped-over third CD on a lark. The title track, one of two songs produced by Jon Brion before the label dispute that prompted hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Eminem) to step in, sounds like a Judy Garland number slathered with irony or something Rufus Wainwright might have had a hand in--strings soar, beats bump around skittishly, and notes require a ladder. But playful as it is, by the time the chorus kicks in it's clear why the world has missed Fiona Apple so much. Young female artists who have stepped into the spotlight since she fled it six years ago-- Nellie McKay and Joss Stone spring to mind for their cleverness and heat, respectively--seem slight in comparison. With every track ticked off, in fact, Extraordinary Machine moves listeners a little closer to what might be a correct assumption: that everything they've dipped into since 1999's When the Pawn ... was filler. Fans will feel it especially on "O'Sailor," a gimlet-eyed lament, and "Tymps," a tight piano track with a tip of the hat to hip-hop. It's "Window," though, with its lyric about "a filthy pane of glass" fogging up a clear view, that sums up the experience of this CD best. "I had to break the window," Apple sings, smoky-voiced as ever. "It just had to be." With Extraordinary Machine, she shatters already sky-high expectations. -Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I hate to say it but..........2007-07-13

...this album kills me! After several heartfelt attempts to like it, I eventually had to retire it to the depths of my CD cabinet. The fact that I truely find it to be impossible to listen to is devasting because I have so enjoyed Fiona for many years. The songs on this album are terribly depressing and musically I just don't find this work to be pretty or inspiring. I'm sorry Fiona, and I will always love you, but this album just didn't cut it for me.

5 out of 5 stars Her Best........2007-06-28

If you loved Apple's first two albums, you may have a hard time liking this one. This one is very different from the others. It exists not on Apple's raw and simple singer-songwriter style that made her famous, but more of a bigger, vaster, more complex music ochestration. There is a shift, on this album. The focus moves away from her minor piano chords to synthesizers and handclaps and chimes and mandolins. The songs loose their classic verse-chorus-verse structure for something more like verse-bridge-chorus-verse-another bridge with crazy schizophrenic tempo changes ("Not About Love")and "hip-hop" beats ("Tymps [Sick in the head song]"). So brace yourself, it is a very big change. One that people are quick to write off as "trivial" or "sugary-pop", but they are just amateurs at Apple's work; the reason she is so amazing is that she can make music that seems too refined, too upbeat and shallow to be anything important. But then you listen to her voice and her lyrics and her chords and you realize that what apple is really doing is poking fun at her self. Deconstructing that seemingly airbrushed-rosy-cheeked image until you see that sharp shadowy figure of depth that lurks beneath that surface. This is what she does here, presenting a cleverly crafted marketing package that--on first listen--will sell copies. But, if you look close enough, you'll see that itching anguish that almost goes over your head. The woman is full of riddles.
And don't be fooled, fiona is still amazing.
Her voice takes on a solid, more mature tone in this album. Deep and rich and at times eerie.
And the lyrics are better than ever. She is witty, clever and concise; a goddess at rhyme who's lyrics possess a powerful sting in and of its simplicity; the kind that you have to read twice, three, four times to get. She is the sing-song Dorothy Parker of the 21st century. Brillant.
Highlight Lyrics inlude:
1. From "Window"---"I had to break the window/It just had to be/Better that i break the window/Then him, or her, or me."
2. From "Red Red Red"--"I don't understand about diamonds and why men buy them/Whats so impressive about a diamond?/Except the mining?
3. From "Parting Gift"--"Oh you silly, stupid past time of mine/You were always good for the rhyme.
4. From "Get Him Back"--"Wait till i get him back/He wont have a back to scratch.
This album is also perfectly balanced. A perfect combination of upbeat power songs ("Get Him Back, Tymps, Not About Love), gut-wrenching ballads (Oh Well, Red Red Red, and Parting Gift) along with some light fluety, fun tunes (Please Please Please, Waltz, Extraordinary Machine.)
In short, youd have to be a perfect fool not to buy this album. It is Fiona Apple's best yet. She has raised the bar yet again; vocally, lyrically, and melodically. This album goes from the margin to the center in terms of emotion, too. Screaming and growling and belting out whatever raw feelings that have been buried underneath, seeming to surface like a great big crashing wave that will completely smother you in its prescence.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2007-05-21

Great album. The music is amazing and so are the lyrics. I would easily consider this a must have. One of the best of 2005

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-05-14

This is such a beautiful CD in every way shape and form.
It is great to have her back and in such a wonderful way.
Very few words are needed to express the beauty of this effort.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-05-13

This is now one of my favorite albums of all time. Fiona does a brilliant job of songwriting in a variety of styles. She comes up with the catchiest melodies and hooks. Her lyrics are deep, well-written works of poetry that stand on their own.

Not only is The Nightmare Before Christmas one of the best musicals of the past two decades; it may well be Danny Elfman's masterpiece, successfully integrating his main influences (from Cab Calloway to Nino Rota) into a fantastic whole. The first disc of this reissue features the original soundtrack, its songs still teetering between dark humor and poetic flights of fancy; this so-called kids' music is at least as sophisticated and skilled as anything you're likely to hear on Broadway. The second disc includes demo versions of four songs on which Elfman plays and sings everything, and five new covers of some of Nightmare's best-loved songs. Marilyn Manson successfully applies his spooky Weimar-circus style on "This Is Halloween" while Panic! At the Disco's lushly orchestrated take on the same tune is closer to the original. Fiona Apple's poignant "Sally's Song" is enhanced by very nice string charts, and She Wants Revenge does a disco take on "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Best perhaps is Fall Out Boy's cover of "What's This?" which sounds like an unexpected cross between the Beach Boys and Queen. A highly recommended set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars His Halloween!!!.......2007-06-20

Well, disc 1 is Danny Elfman's classic soundtrack to the film that is of course great (goes without saying). Disc 2, to mu pleasent surprise was pretty cool as well. Marilyn Manson's cover of "This Is Halloween" is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMO, it's not only the best track on the album, but it is one of the best cover songs ever recorded in the history of history. I was almost certain that he would have messed that song up...but he really does an amzing job. Even if you hate Manson, ..you won't hate this song. As for the other covers, I liked Fiona Apple's cover of "Sally's Song", and I thought the She Wants Revenge cover of "Kidnap The Santy Claws" was a good eightees style presentation, kinda Depeche Mode-eske. The other bands on the disc all did an ok job, but it's really all about the Manson cover when it's all said and done.

THIS SOUNDTRACK'S PERFECT IF YOU'RE INTO ANIMATED MOVIES AND MUSIC!MANSON DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB ON HIS SONG: THIS IS HALLOWEEN! HIS VOICE HAS SO MANY DIMENSIONS IN THIS SONG.HIS MUSIC IS PERFECT WITH THE TITLE.

5 out of 5 stars It's simply the best!.......2007-02-15

Both versions of "What's this?" are great! Danny Elfman had already conquered my admiration and respect with Batman's and The Corpse Bride's soundtrack, but The Nightmare Before Christmas is my number 1 for a bunch of reasons: the interpretations are awesome and the new versions in the second CD have profoundly delighted me. If you're an Elfman's fan, you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars best 2-pack i've bought in a while.......2007-02-09

i will admit, i have been and will be a manson fanatic for a number of years. Nightmare before Christmas has also been on a consistent highnote for me even as a little kid when we got on VHS. so when i heard Danny Elfman on the radio talking about this thing a few weeks before it came out, i heard "marilyn manson will be doing a cover of "this is halloween", my heart jumped and i almost veered of the I-15. i bought two copies of it, one for myself and one for a friend who i knew would also appreciate it for the Panic! cover.

i will also admit i bought this cd without any hesitation, and only for that one song, and i must say it hit it right on the money. Marilyn Manson in my mind is the master of taking good, popular songs, and twisting them into something unique and that makes a statement (hearing him sing "boys and girls of every age, wouldn't you like to see something strange?" is rather convienient).

i also enjoyed the rest of the cds with more or less the same appreciation.

my only gripe with this cd is She Wants Revenges version of Kidnap The Sandy Claws. that was something i was looking forward to, and the signers monotone singing does little to honor the song. the background tune hardly resembles the melody it was taken from. in that song there were 3 distinctive voices, with SWR, you got one unchanging voice with no emotion. hell Beastie Boys coulda done a better job on this song.

4 out of 5 stars A review.......2007-01-20

Seeing as I am an impulse buyer as well as a fan of this movie, I wasn't surprised to wake up one morning and find the package for this sitting on my doorstep. I listened to the second disc first and decided that it was OK. After reading some of the other reveiws I came to agree with some but disagree with others. Everyone has been saying that the Manson version of "This Is Halloween" was the best because it was scary and the Panic! version of said song sucked becuase it was too carnical like. If any of you remember the movie, the original song wasn't meant to be scary, but celebratory. I think Panic! captured that feeling best. Fiona Apple's song was beautiful, but I found that She Wants REvenge missed the mark a little. It had a good beat, yes, but it was too monotone for my taste. Fall Out Boy's cover is a kepper and has made it's way to my most played list. The demos are great, thought the demo of Kidnap the Sandy Claws kinda freaks me out when I remember that it's one guy doing three voices.

4 out of 5 stars It's IZ, what more needs to be said?.......2007-05-12

Since I am not from Hawaii I don't profess to identify with the political and cultural aspects of IZ's music, so all I can really say is that I find IZ's music just plain nice to listen to, especially when its just him and his uke. Need to relax, need to kick back and drift away to the Islands then this will do it for you. Get rid of the pills and pick up a dose of IZ to calm the tensions of the day. Of course you'll have to resist to go out and purchase a one way ticket to Hawaii.....or will you?

5 out of 5 stars So long, Beethoven!.......2006-10-24

A classical music buff, & up until August had never heard of IZ. In an airport in Botswana, awaiting a plane to Johannesburg (delayed for several hours), I observed a distinguished-looking man, sitting completely relaxed, with a smile on his face, listing to his iPod. Finally, out of boredom I commented about how un-stressed he seemed to be; he promptly passed over his earphones. WOW! It was Iz singing "Over the Rainbow" (a song I am completely and thoroughly sick of!) Of course, his version was familiar and for the first time in years, I loved the song. Unfortunately, I then forgot the artist's name. Thank goodness it came back to me.

Bought this CD at probably the last Tower Music Store in the nation, along with 15 others (all classical) and can't stop playing it. Right now I'm in the process of buying this album for a friend, along with all the rest of his collection.

So long, Beethoven! (Not really, but this is a whole new wonderful addition to my listening life.) I think IZ belongs in every top-notch music portfolio.

3 out of 5 stars Hit or Miss.......2006-05-07

Odd that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (formerly a member of Hawaiian Renaissance band, the Makaha Sons of Niihau, and outspoken vocalist in the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement) would hook up with John DeMello, the son of Hawaiian music's whitest bandleader -- Jack DeMello (the latter of whom orchestrated ultra easy listening records in the '60s). Putting that aside, this album is really hit or miss for me.

When Israel is doing his beachboy-style songs (loose, comedic, played solo on the ukulele or with minimal overdubs) he provides a glimpse of the old Hawaiian spirit so lacking in contemporary Hawaiian music. Which is to say that most present-day Hawaiian music is so serious, that it almost sounds like Contemporary Christian Music. Israel's versions of "Kamalani" and "I Ke Alo O Iesu" are slick, sappy and overwrought with sentimentality. In other words, they are the opposite of the loose, mellow and cool sound inherent to beachcomber cuts like "Tengoku Kara Kaminari" and "Theme from Gilligan's Island."

Yeah, that's right... this strong native Hawaiian voice tackles the theme from Sherwood Schwartz's tacky, '60s go-go, beachcomber television show (starring TV beatnik Bob Denver). But in doing so, Kamakawiwo'ole puts his own spin on the song, first bringing an oceanside humor that was not on the original theme recording for the show's credits. But halfway through "Theme from Gilligan's Island," Israel turns the song into a loose politcal statement, as he reminds the listener that he has no need to come back from THIS island... back to a place where there are cars, pollution and government corruption. In that sense, the song connects on many levels, even though it seems like a silly idea at first glance.

"E Ala E" -- the opening track on this album -- is a fiercly political cry that works as a personal plead for Hawaiian civil rights and sovereignty over their own land. The field recordings of Hawaiian demonstrators marching and chanting in the background gives the song another layer of depth.

All in all, there's enough goodness going on here to get you past the sappy material. But there are better Kamakawiwo'ole albums out there, including his entire back catalogue with the Makaha Sons of Niihau, plus IZ's first two solo albums.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing Enjoyment.......2006-04-17

This is a beautiful combination of traditional Hawaiian and contemporary tunes, both tender and upbeat. I purchased this CD when visiting Hawaii for the first time, and have loved Iz's music ever since. This CD should be in anyone's collection who loves contemporary Hawaiian music and the versatile sound of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

Tidal is the debut album by Fiona Apple, a New York singer-songwriter-pianist who was 18 years old at the time of its 1996 release. Apple is obviously talented--she has a dark, smoky alto and a knack for an arresting turn of phrase--but she's still several years away from realizing her potential. For every fresh lyric she writes ("Daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary of waiting to be consumed by you"), she provides two examples of embarrassingly precious schoolgirl poetry ("Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red," from the same song, "The First Taste"). She also has yet to refine her moody piano chords into actual melodies, though "Shadowboxer" comes close. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-07-05

Fiona Apple is by far one of the most amazing artists of our time. Her 3 CD discography is needed in every music collection.

3 out of 5 stars When it's good, it's violent.......2007-02-09

Lots of missteps here, especially the 'soulful fuzak' approach, and less ear candy than later work, but the key tracks conclusively demonstrate Apple a master of the pissed off / vulnerable dichtomy not seen since Joni Mitchell stopped taking crap from the world. "Sleep To Dream" is as excoriating as it is catchy - no mean feat. Ditto "Criminal." Raw and real - estrogen brutalization. Whatever is happening with the song or the band (yay - trendy chamberlain), Apple's astronomical persona aims unwaiveringly at the bullseye, BANG - bold as Lennox on "Missionary Man." Oh yeh, "Never Is A Promise" is an unqualified art song, complete with string quartet - oblique and visceral. The start of an incredible career.

4 out of 5 stars excelent debut.......2007-01-20

great album... no as complete as her second one "when the pawn" but definitely brought my attention to her awesome singing... "criminal" and "sleep to dream"my favorite songs.. and also the use of a mellotron keyboard stirs up memories of the 70's ... great artist overall...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-12-31

Bought this cd site unseen. Heard the voice and the rest is history. Wish there was more material out there - but this is the first and best effort from Fiona. Every song is powerful and soulful that will move you. It is a pitty that there was not a duplicate effort, but this cd is a can't miss!

5 out of 5 stars sultry rock.......2006-11-29

this album is wonderful, it is blues based, with jazzy tunes, yet there is a rock /pop componenet as well. for those of you that love tori amos and the like. This album is a bit mellow and sad though. no real fast songs to groove to.

5 out of 5 stars A sound and soul unique.......2006-08-07

IZ's voice is well known to many from his background music on a television commercial for a toy company. He makes everything he sings his own, no matter the genre, the era. He sings traditional (pre-statehood) Hawaiian music with a vibrance that reflects his love of the islands and the early way of island life which he worked to promote. He sings popular standards adding his own soaring improvisations, his own interpretations, revealing music we never knew was there. Buy this recording. Buy all his recordings, as I have. Listen to them all by yourself, then listen to them with your closest friends. They are deeply-felt, deeply-personal works of music that have touched me and broadened my vision of what good music can be.

3 out of 5 stars Magical.......2006-03-11

I love this man's music and spirit, however, this was not my very favorite of all his albums. I loved "Facing Future" the very most. But there is not a time or an album that you cannot be extremely moved by Iz's music and soul and love of his Hawaii.

5 out of 5 stars Best Music On The Planet.......2005-10-27

In the beginning of the movie Contact, our planet earth is shown wildly spinning through space, expelling out transmissions of television and radio. The feeling is that we are representing ourselves to possible listeners from beyond. It's a fascinating thought, and more than a little embarrassing if you think about it.

This live cd by Bruddah Iz is something very special. It's something that would make me proud to broadcast into space, traveling until it's received and pondered by an intelligent lifeform. It's powerful, beautiful music, presented by a kind-hearted man. This is absolutely how I would like our planet to be represented. Perhaps this is why I frequently listen to Iz after I've overdosed on the complexities and harshness of living, or the bad vibes seen on the news.

Someone below stated that there is too much talking, and not enough music. I don't get it. I have everything that Iz ever created, including cds, dvds and videos, and treasure every single one. The fact that he does talk is what is special here. Iz is a generous window into an indigenous culture, and he shares this like no other. But, the cd is mostly about the music, and I never gained a sense that this is chatty or unmusical. I love hearing him talk, especially since he has moved on and the talking has stopped. At the end of Alone In IZ World there is a secret track, where he is talking about having trouble breathing, shortly before he moved on. This is powerful, and very moving.

Facing Future is a great place to start, and this cd is a great second ... or perhaps E Ala E. But, I've nearly worn this one out. Iz was musical down to his bones, but more than that his music is healing and represents the highest nature of us.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

When the Pawn Hits fulfills the promise of Fiona Apple's debut, Tidal, a strong statement given that her first outing was one of 1996's most exciting collections. Dark and emotionally dense, Apple's sophomore effort is awash in alluring and witty undercurrents that belie its creator's youth. --Steven Stolder

Amazon.com

Fiona Apple, what a character. Between the softcore video, the awards show rebuke, and now for her second album concocting history's most ludicrous title (the full thing runs 90 words long), Apple is earning a rep as a world-class oddball. Which may be the case. In contrast to many of her faux eccentric contemporaries, however, this wolf in waif's clothing seems to be genuinely astray in the straight world. And Apple is the real thing in another way--as a talent. When the Pawn Hits picks up where her eye-opening debut, Tidal, left off. With Jon Brion back in the producer's seat, the twosome concoct a heady, keyboard-heavy soundscape that perfectly complements the singer's assertive, dangerously sexy Nina Simone-meets-Chrissie Hynde delivery. Unforeseen embellishments color the arrangements, including the sinister carnival interlude in "On the Bound," the George Harrison-like guitar in "Mistake," and the drum solo (when's the last time you heard one of those on a pop album?) in "Limp." All Brion's enhancements are in service of Apple, who comes through with preternaturally confident expressions of insecure sentiments ("Change my mind, I can't decide, there's too many variations to consider") and cold-eyed accounts of recrimination and self-recrimination. Cohesive, gutsy, and finely honed, When the Pawn Hits pummels any notions of a sophomore slump for 1996's most promising newcomer. A character, yes, but what an artist, too! --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars The Best Apple CD.......2007-07-05

I feel that this is the best of the three Fiona CDs. This is probably my most listened and most coveted CD, not just by Apple, but in general. She is an amazing singer/songwriter and this album is a display of that. You WILL NOT be disappointed by this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Getting extraordinary.......2007-04-19

Disclaimer: I heard this one after Apple's 3rd, and latest, album - so, loving the cabaret touches added to Extraordinary Machine (and sharper songwriting), I was a bit let down by When The Pawn.

The formula is firmly in place, and it's a good one - PlasticOno piano, bitter recriminations, unpredictable metaphors, walloping beats, spooky Chamberlain and retro colors (usually on the coda). It's an intoxicating sound.

"On The Bound" offers classic aggressive Apple and "Get Gone" gets downright nasty, but my fave is "Paper Bag," with its vulnerable stance and super-startling hook, "Hunger hurts but starving works when it costs too much to love."

Her influence throughout pop music since the mid-90's is leviathan.

5 out of 5 stars a modern classic.......2007-01-20

the best record i've heard in the past few years... awesome production... fiona at her best, great songs, great arrangements, great sound...
it puts her right there with my most favored classics... a modern day "abbey road".. can't stop listening to it... absolute masterpiece.a step up form the debut album... it actualy made me by all three fiona records...

5 out of 5 stars Music for the road.. to think and enjoy.......2006-06-16

Asa travelling salesman on the road, i have the unique privilige to hear a cd well and experience all the moods..

Fiona Apple is a musian that its wiser beyond her age.. for contemporary adults (Im in my early forties) this music involves you in an atmosphere (kind of dark but intense) that will challange you.

3 out of 5 stars "And I'll be your girl if you say it's a gift...".......2006-06-12

Fiona Apple's When the Pawn... is an ok album of sorts. Boy is she angry and pissed on these songs. After that MTV fiasco in 1997, Fiona became an outspoken and muchly hated woman for speaking her mind. This album is very different from her debut album, Tidal. Standout tracks include: Limp, Fast as you Can, Love Ridden, Paperbag, Get Gone, and The Way Things Are. The rest of the songs I didn't care for, nothing drastically wrong with them just middle of the road tracks. Some of the songs are too jazzy and slow for my taste. But the songs I do like are strong and gutsy, especially the song Limp, "You feed the beast I have within me, you wave the red flag baby you make it run, run, run, standing on the sidelines waving and grining, you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun..." The song Love Ridden would actually fit better on her Tidal album, haunting and gorgeous song though, "Love ridden I've looked at you, with the focus I gave to my birthday candles, I've wished on the lidded blue flames under your brow and baby I wished for you..." When the Pawn shines in certain places but otherwise average to my picky ears.
