3 out of 5 stars Only a hint of what they will bang out on WILD DOGS!!!.......2007-07-30

I've always admired the raw sound and driving rhythm of 3 person bands. You know, like Motor Head and RUSH. Admittedly, this high expectation probably prejudiced my experience with this release. With that said, there are only 2 memorable songs here. On their own, the rest of the songs only rate 2 stars. For the most part, these songs are generic medium-rock with occasional segments that hint of The Rods' talent to be heard in WILD DOGS. Link to WILD DOGS here: Wild Dogs

5 out of 5 stars awesome american hard rock .......2007-06-29

I discovered this band through a sounds review by 'Deaf' Barton way back in ' 81 . He said the band reminded him of the ted nugent band circa the classic '75 era , the man was always right !! this is american hard rock at its best , before the influence
of the NWOBHM ! . superb songs , fantastic playing , Carl Canedys drumming has to be heard to be believed !!. Every track is a stand out , but if I have to single out tracks I would pick NOTHING
GOING ON IN THE CITY & HUNGRY FOR LOVE as my faves . If you like real rock 'n roll buy this cd , if you like death metal forget
it this cd is about geat songs and having fun .

2 out of 5 stars interesting.......2006-04-20

have had this cd since it came out but never listened to it. It has some truly interesting work on it. Most of it is sort of shoegazer downtempo but with a bit more punch. If the songs were trimmed down some or the vocalist did some more with his melody then the songs wouldn't drag.

5 out of 5 stars Chumba Wumba.......2005-02-25

Gay? is a record that makes me want to thump tubs. It is post/pre awesome. They found their perfect middle ground on this EP. These chaps are production junkies in love with the process and they made an EP that proves it. Buy this now or forever be forced to drive very small automobiles.

4 out of 5 stars Serious music by a band serious about music........1999-02-17

I've heard the phrase "Post New Wave" associated with 12RODS- mebbe they called themselves that, mebbe someone else did. It's an apt description. They showed me it was possible to have a loud, strong sound and still be melodious. These guys are dedicated to their music, and put alot of effort and emotion into their songs.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Bliss.......1998-04-26

12 Rods has found the perfect musical balance between the technical prowess of Rush and the pop genius of The Cure. I have recently re-discovered this EP and it has hardly left my CD changer. If you get a chance to see them perform, be sure to do so; they are even better live than on disc.

Another version of this disk may still be available at similar prices. That disk has all these songs PLUS 5 bonus live songs. Expect the bonus songs to be not as refined as the studio songs. But, for aficionado's of live music, they're worth even a little extra cash. Link to other version of Wild Dogs here:Wild Dogs

    5 out of 5 stars A Response.......2005-01-06

I love this album. The imaginative songwriting and thoughtful lyrics make it realy worthwhile. However, for those of you who were thrown by the 1 out of 5 star review, notice that none of the other, extreemly positive, reviews are from MN. In fact i heard from them when i was in Oxford, OH where the band started. They were also on the "Orange County" soundtrack, the one with Jack Black. Whatever, if you like punk/electronic/rock this is a great choice.

1 out of 5 stars I'm so shocked they got dumped by V2!!.......2004-06-26

The local Twin Cities "tastemakers" (now there's an oxymoron) wanted BADLY to make this group the next big thing, and hyped them mercilessly in the local press for at least two solid years. I envy anyone who lived anywhere else who didn't have to put up with it. If you were a gullible fool who listens to such drivel you would have thought they were better than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined. Those of us with real taste were unimpressed by an obviously bland and uninteresting "modern pop rock" combo. Boy, the world sure needs more of those. Let's review some of the nonsense: "Greatest band in the last 10 years"....."MN's greatest artists since Dylan," (that one really cracks me up)..... "one of the best albums ever recorded".....uh, right, no hype there! Gee, and I thought they were a mediocre wanna-be group that got dumped by their label after 2 albums. Silly me. Don't be fooled by the Rundgren connection - unlike most artists, producers get their green up front UNRECOUPABLE. Todd got a sweet payday (billed to the "artists") and got to keep the money when the album flopped. I had to laugh at the reviewer who puzzled over why Todd didn't insist on his name being displayed more prominently in the credits. Don't get me wrong, he did the best he could, but there wasn't much to work with. Beware of hypesters (especially from in and around Mpls/St. Paul) who still want to try to convince the world that this utterly unremarkable music is 5 stars. Take serious note of how many used copies are out there and how little they sell for, despite the album being not available new. That speaks a lot louder than any hype.

5 out of 5 stars god commands you to buy this album!!!.......2004-06-05

Theses dudes are local too me which is real cool.this album is "poppier" than split personalities (great album) but its my favorite rods album plus one of my all time platnium classic double deluxe super special albums series. I'm sorry, thats ridiculious, but in all seriousness, this albums has so many different sounds and grooves and moods that its difficult to describe.Plus (...)they can go REAL BIG and moody which I dig big time...the singer has a style all his own so i can't really compare him to any other artist except to say he captures all the different musical moods with vocal perfection and his writing is totally original. Although i am a monster fan of their music i would not let them take me sexually. That I will not do.

    5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2002-04-22

This CD is fantastic. I've had it for about a year and a half and I still can't believe it never took off. I really believe it may be one of the best albums ever recorded. Certainly it's one of the best that went undiscovered.

While I appreciated, but never loved his solo work, Todd Rundgren's production here is genius. This is pure pop - a beautiful mix of early Weezer, XTC, Thomas Dolby and Prefab Sprout. Check out Kaboom, Radioaction, Marionette, You Gotta Go, Everybody and Repeat. The production and mixing are flawless.

5 out of 5 stars If you could wear CD's out, this one would be a goner!.......2001-01-04

Every few years, a recording comes along that I instantly become addicted to and the 12 Rods record, Seperation Anxieties is the most current. I bought this title when it was released in July 2000 and I'm still listening to it a few times a week. Seperation Axieties, produced by Todd Rundgren, harkens back to those power pop/punk sounds of the eighties(think XTC, Police, The Replacements etc.), but unlike most bands today, they don't mine that era of music for the vintage synth sounds. What they do take from the eighties are the catchy melodic hooks, tight songwriting a blend of synth and guitars. Mr. Rundgren's production is excellent, as he does something similar to what he did with XTC on Skylarking. He has taken the songs and made them into a cohesive collection, polishing all the rough spots as he finds something that sonically links all the tunes. Ryan Olcott's songwriting is key to this record. The melodic hooks in songs like Everybody, Repeat and Your Secret's Safe are nothing short of addictive. The lyrics are self reflective but he never takes himself too seriously. Anyway, I could go on, but I'll stop myself. If you're one of those pretentious people who think everything needs to aggressive, atonal or cutting edge, then forget about this record. If not you should buy this CD!! I can only hope that the 12 Rods get some well deserved media attention.

    Cheers!

Here's an educated guess that road tapes are the second most popular type of homemade mix cassette. (One suspects that old off-road standard--the bedroom mix--would clock in at No. 1.) Hot Rods & Custom Classics is Rhino Records' big daddy of road mixes: four discs housed in an elaborate box that includes a scrupulously assembled 66-page booklet, a catalog of hot-rod accessories, a strip of decals, and even a set of fuzzy dice for your own resto rod. Musically, this collection is all over the road, ranging from selections that seem like they were written with one foot on the accelerator (Johnny Bond's "Hot Rod Lincoln," Chuck Berry's "Maybelline," War's "Low Rider") to more tangential tracks that might force you to pull into a rest stop (Hank Williams's mournful "Lost Highway," Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley"). Spanning multiple genres and five decades, Custom Classics is enlivened by film and ad snippets, including a public-safety message from high-speed-crash victim James Dean on, naturally, safe highway driving. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Well done Amazon.......2005-09-07

I read a review of this in an English music magazine some years ago and have been trying to get it ever since. The only place from where i could get it sent was "Amazon.com".This is an amazing set with songs from the 50s right through to the 80s and I love it to bits. Particularly pleased to have the wonderful "Black & white Thunderbird" by the Delicates on CD now but it's all really good. Yes there's a lot missing as one reviewer said but you'd have to have a 25CD set to get it all on and you'd still miss out on stuff even then. Be thankful for what it HAS got on it - it's wonderful. And the service from Amazon was first class - arrived 3 weeks before it was due to do so. Thanks

    4 out of 5 stars Hot Rods.......2005-09-06

We just DJ'd a "Car Cruise" in our area. Not only did we enjoy the songs on these cds, but most of the people in the crowd were jammin' right along with us. The "Rev Off" between the '41 Merc and the '61 Chevy was AWESOME! We used it as a contest. Actually had someone able to guess both vehicles! If you are a DJ, and play at any car shows, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Lots Missing Though.......2004-11-15

this is a great set.Sure to be collectible in the future and some of the songs are treasurs.I personally love hearing all the rare unknown stuff and im happy they didn't load it up with known stuff.Drag City and Little Duce Coupe are great songs but I have enough copy's allready.I wish there had been some more surf derived songs on here like

    Beach Buggy-The Shutdowns
    GeeTO Tiger-The Tigers
Burning Rubber-Gene Moles(also released as Batmobile for Batman fans)
    Twin Pipes-Gene Moles
    Ballad Of Boneville-Don Brandon
    R.P.M.-The Four Speeds
    Mag Wheels-Gary Usher
Four On The Floor-The Four Speeds
    My Sting Ray-The Four Speeds
    Surfin Hearse-The Quads
    Nifty 50-The Customs
    Dragster On The Prowell-The Dovells
    Chicken-Burt Convoy
    Road Runner-The Gants

The list goes on.They did a good job but they could have dome better. My personal favorite is off the set is Hoped Up Mustang by Arlen Sanders.Yeah its just a re-write of Hot Rod Lincoln and he does basically talk through it rather than sing but there is a certain attatude about that song. One song they should have thrown on or maby Rhino will do a Christmas cd some day is Hope Rod Sleigh by The Reindeer. So werather its

My Dad He Said Son You Gonna Drive Me To Drinkin If You Don't Quite Drivin That HOt Rod Lincoln

Santa Said Elves You'll Never See Christmas Day If You Don't Quite Drivin That Hot Rod Sleigh

    There All Good To Me.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for every road lover.......2003-10-16

I expected this box 2 be good, but it's amazing. I just think this box should be in every road music lover's collection, because the songs are just mind blowing, the book is something wonderful, plus you get decals and fuzzy dice, what do you want more??? If you like cars and road songs, all you need is here.
    Long life to Rhino Records.

5 out of 5 stars Essential relief fer hot rod fetishists!.......2000-07-25

This is sooo good. The package is great: excellent book featuring Tom Wolf's very intellegent "The Kandy-Kolored-Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby" and other nice little bits and over 80 classic, humorous and just darn right bizarre tracks about cars, hot rods and driving 'em and lovin' 'em, covering 5 decades. If you're into that, grab it, you'll love it I'm sure. If you're not ...mmmm think about it 1st and then probably get it! P.S. Mr. Amazon, I was so impressed with it that I wrote a revue for a friend's magazine and I know another friend of mine is going to revue it in another 'special interest' magazine here in the UK ...but I've already checked and you can't get this box set from Amazon .co.uk. Let me know if this changes and I'll pass on the details (for a small consideration of course! ).

    5 out of 5 stars great album.......2005-01-27

great album by a very good band. never get tired of. some classic songs. cannot think of a better album from the period. wonder what happened to the band - whatever such a waste.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Rods Rock!.......2002-08-10

Not a dull moment on Eddie and the Hot Rods second LP. A masterful job from each member of the band from start to finish as they race thru the title track and other songs like "Telephone Girl" and "Ignore Them". If you like high energy rock, then you will love "Life On The Line".

5 out of 5 stars Second album crowns career of hard-rocking late-70s pub band.......2000-06-15

As British pub-rock fed into punk-rock, bands like Eddie & The Hot Rods were caught deliviously in the middle. They were more accomplished instrumentally (and compositionally) than the punks, but they caught the fire of the latter's energy and teenage abandon.

This LP represents the 'Rods second and best effort, adding a bit more of a melodic edge through the addition of guitarist Graeme Douglas. Many bright moments to be heard, including the superb UK chart hit, "Do Anything You Wanna Do."

This import reissue is listed elsewhere as containing nine bonus tracks.

What's a group of small town high school misfits to do when the popular shoe won't fit? Go the rock & roll route, of course! 12 Rods' full-length debut, Split Personalities, is a swizzle stick of XTC-like pop, stirring up '90s production values in a glass of geek. Guitarist Ryan Olcott, his keyboardist brother Ev, and drummer best friend Christopher McGuire surf over self-depreciation with synchronized sighing, turning life's lemons into thick but witty anthems like "Red," "Make-Out Music," and "Split Personality." The Minneapolis-based trio also knows how to offer up atypical love songs like "I Wish You Were a Girl"; instead of turning into a novelty song, it sounds both uncomfortable and sincere. Mixed by the band, Paul Q. Kolderie (Morphine), and Sean Slade (the Cure), Split Personalities stacks tender next to abrasive, proving that the smarts don't win without the heart. --Jason Josephes

    5 out of 5 stars The best.......2001-11-28

I like 12 Rods as much as I like music in general. This is my favorite album of all time. I've been listening to it frequently for about nine months now, and A) I still love to listen to it, B) I still notice new interesting things in the songs. The first album I got of 12 Rods' was Separation Anxieties. It blew me away, and it was instantly in my top 10 favorite albums ever. Then I got Split Personalities and couldn't even listen to Separation Anxieties anymore. That's how good this album is.

5 out of 5 stars Angst-filled rock at its best.......1999-12-24

With all the useless, stupid anger in the world of rock music today, it's nice to hear a band that you feel isn't whining for no reason. Oh yeah, and the music rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Geeks, Cowboys, and Rock Stars Unite!.......1999-02-24

It's about time somebody in the Minneapolis music scene did something different. Ballsy, smart, and beautiful. This album's great, but the real thing is oh so better. See them live if you can...they're unbelievable!

5 out of 5 stars Drop it in, hit play. Repeat........1999-02-13

The 12 Rods have pulled off a wonderful eclectic mix of guitar driven rock and hi-fi technology. This has a little something for everyone. Hard driven rock, with splashes of hi-fi for some flavor, cheesy popiness without selling out, and great lyrics. "Split Personalities" the title track and first single off of the disc, is solid, although I don't believe the best song on the disc. "Red" which is also featured on the EP Gay? is weighty for those who need a little "chunk, chunk" in their library. My favorite track, if I had to pick, would be "Girl Sun." This is where they bring in a little cheese, but it is pulled off beautifully. "I am faster" is a very dynamic song that really carries alot of energy. I listened to this song over and over. It is very powerful. I am very much looking forward to the Rods next effort. If you are lucky enough to see this band live don't miss the opportunity. Run don't walk to your local store or just order it here from Amazon. I definately recommend this CD to anyone with the ability to turn off their radio and listen to something that has had some effort put into it.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......1998-12-13

A wonderful album overfowing with mixtures of good old guitar rock and a bit of the cheesy techno that has made prodigy so sucessful into an album that is just great. Compared to Gay? (their debut EP) the album is easier to listen to and the vocals are more up front to the noise backing it up. Although it takes Make-Out Music and Red from Gay? they are both done very well done and worth the listen. As for the rest of the album they do a great job at mixing suburban nostalgia and the frustration that errupts because of it. I would recommend buying the very affordable EP Gay? first and if you like what you hear buy this long-player as well.

4 out of 5 stars The Rods Rock!.......2006-08-11

This is good, old-school, head-banging, fist-pounding metal. Nothing too complicated here, but it doesn't have to be. If you wanna rock like it's 1984, then this is a great place to start!

    4 out of 5 stars Hot! .......2005-08-10

Great classic Heavy Metal band at one of its best. "Let Them Eat Metal" composition was hit in Poland played on the radio many times in the middle of eighties.
...by the way: cover is very original and very hot too.

    5 out of 5 stars "80'S CLASSIC".......2004-05-28

A hidden gem! I bought it when it first came out and now I can't live without it. My LP got scratched and for many years I searched everywhere for the CD until I finally found it as a German Import. I would have payed 10 times the price, it's just that good and essential to my Metal collection. I bought two just to make sure I never had to go without ever again. All their releases are good but just take one look at this cover and you know that you're in for a treat. The Rods are probably the most underated band of the 80's. They never got the respect that they deserve. This CD is a must for those who love pure Hard Rock at it's best. Pick this one up. You'll thank me later.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Stripped Down Metal at it's Best!.......2000-10-05

This album is a time trip back to the early 80's music scene. No "Glam" here. Just a raw power trio cranked up and smokin'. I've had this album in my collection for over 15 years now and I'm glad they are reissuing it, since my copy is worn out! Not perfect, but a fun record. The sometimes muddy mix loses the lyrics and the lead guitar work on occasion. The lyrics can get a bit tedious since they verge on the death metal side every now and then, but if you want a hard CD that will help you stay awake and drive cross country, this will. Not for the faint hearted. Track nine is possibly the ultimate "Telling Off Your ExGirlfriend Tune." The title track will have the guy in the next lane glaring at you if you crank it up with the windows down, but ignore him and just floor it when the light changes. The Rods are real memory lane nasty school boy stuff like old AC/DC and Judas Priest, just pared down to the basic elements. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Fine "Best Of" For Band That Bridged Pub & Punk Rock.......2004-09-11

Eddie And The Hot Rods were the last of the true Pub-Rock bands. By the time the Hot Rods' 1976 debut album appeared, pub-rock was breathing it's final gasps. Very soon, the punk onslaught overwhelmed the remaining pubbers. Eddie and The Hot Rods were able to hang on longer than the others, largely because their faster tempos and higher energy were more in line with the punk ethic. (Dr. Feelgood also managed to survive for largely the same reasons.) They tried to catch the wave and present themselves as a punk band, but listening to their recorded output makes it quite clear they had more kinship with the pub-rock crowd. But they managed to record three pretty fine albums (as well as one pretty mediocre swan song) and last until 1981. Along the way they scored a big hit with the classic "Do Anything You Wanna Do". Other choice cuts include "Teenage Depression", "Quit This Town", and "Power And The Glory". The best of the Hot Rods' brief lifespan can be found on this excellent compilation. Note: This collection does NOT include any material from various reunion projects that occurred between 1984 to 1996. And that is as it should be; the true heyday of the band was 1975 to 1979, the period covered in this set.
