The Godfathers of Glitch and the Kings of Kling-Klang come out of seclusion with a double live CD culled from various concerts on their 2004 tour. Minimum-Maximum is essentially a greatest-hits album with an audience applauding and occasionally shouting. Without them, of course, you'd never know the album was live, since Kraftwerk is the band that put the programming in pop music. Not much has changed with them since the 1980s. They're still wired to the same sonic circuitry as on Electric Café in 1986, sculpting glistening electro-soundscapes that pulse but never quite groove. And they still sing in that flat, German-accented English and French with Speak and Spell electro-voices. But rather than sound dated, this has a timeless charm, especially since Kraftwerk are among the few Kraut rock groups with a sense of humor. With only two studio albums in the last 20 years, you have to give them credit for not caving in to current electronica and techno trends--Kraftwerk remain resolutely electronic. Even their samples sound synthesized. But also give them credit for some of the most relentlessly glistening electronic music ever crafted, and a sound that remains surprisingly pure. All the hits are here, from "Autobahn" to "Tour de France," but nicely buffed to a high chrome finish. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars Kraftwerk still has what it takes........2007-06-07

Punchy live recordings of Kraftwerk's best known songs.

The CDs are programed wisely and the songs flow from one to the other quite nicely. This makes the CDs easy to listen to.

Some fans have doubts if Kraftwerk are still the leaders in electronic music, this set will ease those fears. They still have what it takes to create compelling music.

They have given us vital sounding new arrangements of aging material on this set. In doing this, Kraftwerk is giving long time fans value. And showing newer fans how a legendary band is able to adapt without losing their vision. And finaly they are showing everyone how a teacher learns from the student. To be a good teacher, one must be able to adapt and progress with the changing times. This is what Kraftwerk has done on this release.

5 out of 5 stars A great starter kit for those new to Kraftwerk!.......2007-04-18

A pivotal, amazing, extraordinary, pioneering electronic group such as Kraftwerk does not have a "greatest hits" collection. However, this really is not that saddening since it forces the interested buyer into purchasing their brilliant classic albums (Trans-Europe Express, Autobahn, etc.) like they should. However, for the timid person this CD is out there. The live versions of the song are studio-quality and since Kraftwerk plays everything post-Autobahn live then this functions as a "best-of". For longtime fans, this is great because it includes newer tracks from the Tour de France Soundtracks and great renditions of their older tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Kraftwerk are still the masters of this genre.......2007-02-26

I have a voracious appetite for electronic music old and new, and I have to say this album proves to me that, at the end of the day, Kraftwerk are still the masters of the genre. I don't normally like live recordings all that much, particularly among electronic music, but this one was incredibly well done. The sound quality and mixing are top notch, and listening to it I really almost feel like I am part of those audiences in Moscow, Riga, and Warsaw. The majority of the recordings are from shows in Eastern Europe, which is just a perfect fit. The real standout with this album for me is that my favorite songs on it are some of the titles that I didn't give a great deal of attention to on the old studio albums. It balances the familiar sound of old with some superb new elaborations. If you're a Kraftwerk fan then you owe it to yourself to add this to your collection. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars It's More Fun To Compute.......2006-11-20

Though studio technology has caught up with the creativity of Kraftwerk, the double-live CD from the 2004 tour aptly shows the group can still pack a punch before an audience.

The first set is interesting for the updated versions of the classics The Man-Machine, Tour De France and Autobahn. But it is when Neon Lights ends that CD and the second disk kicks off with Radioactivity that the band's legendary influence in dance-music is captured.

From Radioactivity to the flow from final three cuts - Elektro-Kardiogramm, Aero Dynamik and Music Non Stop - Kraftwerk is in an absolute groove which could easily play for another hour. Also, the lyrics of Compuer World are as timely (urgent?) now than when they first appeared in the classic studio album by the same name in 1981.

The first official live release after the band first performed about 35 years ago, Kraftwerk shows that the electronic revolution they set forth in the music industry is as much about technique and style as it is about the components and gadgets.

5 out of 5 stars Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2006-07-29

This live set is very impressive. The sound is excellent. When I put it on, it just makes me feel relaxed and really good. It's a thrill to hear such enthusiastic crowds cheering on this strange, bubbling, mechanical music. Some people claim Kraftwerk is old hat, but I say it's too unique to sound dated. I've never been one to care much about how current or fashionable music is anyway. In these live settings, Kraftwerk augments these songs and makes them sound fresh.

5 out of 5 stars better than Rising Tide.......2007-02-04

I loved Rising Tide. but after playing it for a few days, I grew quite tired of it. and after listening to the Mixtape, I realized what I was missing. The Mixtape is absolutely worth listening, it is like no other remix out there. I mean, Jimi Hendrix remix? hell yes! My favorite is the Bloc Part ft. Apathy and Styles of Beyond. and including Lupe Fiasco just made this mixtape all the more enjoyable. GET THIS

Wow. Now let me repeat myself. Wow.
    This is a Mixtape Masterpiece.
Now first off, I'd just like to point out that this Mixtape, is in fact legal.
Not like most Mixtapes that are actually illegal.

Second of all, I'd like to mention that, like most all Mixtapes, this Mixtape only contains "Explicit Content", and yet does not contain a "Parental Advisory" sticker.

Thirdly, I'd also like to mention that Mike Shinoda himself (aka Fort Minor) has said that anyone who wants to, may download this Mixtape for free off of the internet, and he (Mike Shinoda) actually debuted the Mixtape for free download on the internet, before it was ever even released in CD format, on a well hidden MySpace page.
So after you've purchased the Mixtape CD, feel free to make copies of it, and give it to friends, but please encourage them to also buy a copy, so as to support M. Shinoda (aka Fort Minor), along with getting a copy or two of "The Rising Tied".

And fourth, I'll give you the complete tracklisting.

    5 out of 5 stars Dope.......2006-04-18

This is the best mixtape I've ever heard. I'm not really into the mixtape scene, primarily because most of them recycle the same beats too much for me, but this one is way different. Fort Minor got creative with this one.

The production on this mixtape is off the charts. It makes the cd. Shinoda kills this mixtape production wise, and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers in the game. This cd contains some innovative sampling from bands you wouldn't expect to hear on a hip hop mixtape including: Guns N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, and Bloc Party; and some of the beats on here will amaze you.

Shinoda is not the most gifted emcee, but he is capable of holding his own on the mic. Apathy and Lupe Fiasco spit some fire on this cd though. Styles of Beyond and Celph Titled have their moments on the mic as well. There is even surprise guest appearance by Juelez Santana on here, who spits a hot verse also.

The official cd Fort Minor put out-"The Rising Tied" used to get a lot of air time in my whip, but this mixtape has pretty much replaced it in my cd rotation. One of my boys told me "DUDE, You GOTTA burn this cd for me" after hearing three songs on it. Fort Minor: We Major is an underground gem.

Here is a quick summary of this review--You want to own this cd. The End.

5 out of 5 stars Shred Guitar Manifesto.......2007-03-15

For those who like me spent the eighties with an electric guitar in their hands this album is something that put a tear in their eyes. I searched for this one for years but for a reason or another I never could find it. This evening I saw a copy of this one in a record shop I rarely visit and I immediatly ran to pay it and to go at home as fast as I can, at the speed of light to listen to this one as soon as possible. Oh! What a marvel this record is! Shred guitar at its best, it is a reference recording. Macalpine never played so lucid, never composed so well again. The melodies are great and the solo are balanced and absolutly perfect. But this album is not only the greatest in his discography, it is one of the greatest shred guitar albums of all time because the compositions are great, because there is the enthusiasm of doing something that was really new at the time. There is a sense of true freshness allaround. Sure it is a flashy, show off music in a sense (think about the Chopin Opus version put here for good measure), but it is great music!! In those days playing great music and being able to REALLY play, to be virtuosos was the thing. Today music is only about nice bottoms. Gosh. Talking again about serious music and shred guitar, someone in the past used to say that Macalpine (and even Vinnie Moore) was a Malmsteen clone. Were they deaf? Macalpine is so different! I love Yngwie of course but Tony is another completly original artist, the only thing they had in common was playing great "guitar-song" even if Yngwie wrote a lot of stuff with lyrics, when Tony was recording only instrumental stuff. Anyway, if you are a guitar kid who grew up in the eighties you know what I'm talking about if you're reading this. You can't stay without this record in your collection. This one with Moore's Time Odissey, Shawn Lane's Powers of ten, Malmsteen's Rising force, Vai's Passion and Warfare, Satch's Surfing with the alien (all the Van Halen stuff of course and few more) define what shred guitar has been. It's a manifesto of an era. A beautiful period! I love this one. Really. I love it. It's amazing music.

5 out of 5 stars a top three neoclassical shred album.......2007-02-24

When I first heard this album (borrowed from a friend), I was electrified. I'd never heard neoclassical guitar before--and I'd never heard such drumming (Deen Castronovo and Atma Anur). The songwriting is some of the best neoclassical instrumental guitar composition ever done. MacAlpine is a very, very good technician also; and with guests such as "Mr.Scary" himself, George Lynch (of Dokken), the playing here is superb. And then Castronovo's drumming in particular elevates it to another level--first time I heard it, I simply could not believe what I was hearing. How could someone drum with such speed and precision and compositional flair?! He matches the guitar intensity perfectly. Overall, if you're a fan of neoclassical shred and you don't own this album, you're probably living in a cave. BUY IT. TODAY.

      5 out of 5 stars MacAlpine's finest........2006-12-27

I love all of Tony MacAlpine's albums and this is my favorite by far, so that says something in itself. Tony has the ability to impress musicians with his technical and harmonic depth, while still writing beautiful melodies. He's the Allan Holdsworth of metal, I feel.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Neo Classical Album Ever!.......2006-11-04

This is my favorite album of neo classical music. Too bad neo classical died out but this cd definitely has more feelings in it than just shredding. These songs remind me of driving out late at night and relaxing. Every song is amazing on this album. A close second to this album is Vinnie Moore's "Time Odyssey." My favorite songs on this cd include "Sacred Wonder", "Dreamstate", and "Tears of Sahara." This cd is great from 1-11 though. A must have album even if you don't like shred. This album is much more melodic than most shred albums.

      4 out of 5 stars Powerful guitar/shred album.......2006-09-23

It always annoys me a bit when people accuse any 80's neoclassical-metal solo guitarist of being an Yngwie clone. First of all, all great musicians in this vein (Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker, etc.) were playing guitar ever since they were young, the same as Yngwie. Similarly, they were playing neoclassical-styled music on guitar, the same as Yngwie. All Yngwie really does is plays dozens of different scales, modes, arpeggios and runs which could be found in any music textbook. Yngwie is a talented musician, but he isn't superlative in the genre, and I feel that there are others who do what he sought out to do, only better.

Tony Macalpine, especially with this early albums, is quite often accused of copying Yngwie. I would disagree with this greatly. The biggest difference between the two is that Tony (early on) was entirely instrumental. Yngwie has NEVER been entirely instrumental. In fact, even on his most instrumental album, (Rising Force) only three quarters of the songs were instrumentals. From there on, his instrumental pieces became even more scarce, not to mention less varied. Tony was somewhat of the opposite, starting out with an entirely instrumental repertoire, and adding in his own vocals later on. Of course, he also went on to experiment with Fusion and other styles of playing (something which Yngwie has yet to do). Tony's early, Neoclassical days were his greatest.

Now that I've cleared up why Tony isn't just "another Yngwie clone," I can move onto a more detailed description of the album. On Maximum Security, Tony demonstrates a focused, melodic, soulful style of playing which is actually quite unique in the shred genre. Tony gives the guitar room to breathe, endowing almost every song on the album with a beautiful, songlike melody that he can modify and solo over as he pleases. His harmonies (contributed by keyboards and bass which are played by Tony himself) add depth and texture to the songs, while his melody lines are quite superb.

Tony's style of playing is surprisingly tone-oriented, with excellent vibrato, bends and expertly used artificial harmonics, left and right. Every song has a distinct 80's sound to it, which is characterized by Tony's tone, drenched in reverb and distortion, but generally sounding smooth rather than harsh. His songs are all on the short side, the average length for the album being somewhere around 3 or 3 and a half minutes. His works are concise and to the point, with much less showing off than one would expect from a shred artist. His songs feel much more like compositions than showcases for his technical prowess, as Tony only really goes full shred sporadically throughout the album. Most of the time, he's fretting along at a medium tempo, sometimes even in a relaxed, luxuriant manner, like on album standouts Tears of Sahara and Porcelain Doll.

Every song on the album is a winner, and there is hardly anything that could be considered filler, except for maybe the Chopin etude (track nine) which Tony threw in, maybe for a tad of variety, maybe for contrast, or maybe to remind us that he's an awesome classical pianist as well as a virtuoso guitarist--just in case we were doubting his musical talent. The etude is a very commonly played piece, but is also of considerable difficulty. It's short and exciting--most serious piano students will tackle it at some point in their career, but Tony's performance of it is quite polished. He's excellent for an amateur pianist.

The rest of the songs are all Tony's original compositions, though he does borrow a theme from Chopin on Porcelain Doll. Several of the songs also feature solos from fellow 80's shredders George Lynch and Jeff Watson, both of whom are very talented guitarists. This only adds more variety and energy to Tony's already magnificent album.

There's not much to complain about with this album. Tony manages to craft a neoclassical album that is original, concise and almost entirely devoid of excess. Unlike more egotistical, showy players of the time such as Vinnie Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony manages to keep the song lengths short, and the compositions focused, with a strong melody and logical structure instead of just seemingly random shredding.

This is a must-have album for any fan of virtuoso, neoclassical/metal lead guitar work. MacAlpine is an underrated guitar player, who also blesses the album with a great ear for melody/harmony and stellar keyboard skills.

      3 out of 5 stars Relatively Decent.......2006-03-22

A serviceable mix suitable for several types of aerobics-based classes, e.g hi-lo, kickbox, step. It has some good grooves and the transitions are smooth and relatively easy to cue with. The actual music's a bit dated.

      4 out of 5 stars It's okay..........2005-01-03

If this 2-CD set didn't have Blood is Pumpin' Future Breeze Mix on here, I would have given it less stars, maybe 3. It's such a great song, and I finally found it unmixed A lot of the songs on these discs were too cheesy or bad for me. Disc 2 has some really great songs, like remixes of Funk-A-Tron, The Launch, and Dive in the Pool, but so much was cut out of them! A pretty good song selection for the most part, but I would prefer the good songs in their entirety. I've begun to like this much better since I first bought it, over two years ago now.

4 out of 5 stars Good step workout .......2004-12-19

This is a good continuous 130-140 bpm cd. Some songs are a little redundant, but the hard beat keeps the energy up. This is not the best workout CD I've ever heard, but it's worth the price. This CD can also be found at workthis.com where you can find lots of other workout CD's that you can't find on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Maximum Workout Volume 1.......2004-07-27

This is a good choice for a cardio workout. My class enjoyed it and so did I. I am glad I purchased this and it was at an awesome price.... I will pass on the good word to other aeriobic instructors at my gym

This has got to be one of the best CD's I've ever heard. This is that CD that you put on when you're alone and just want to be soothed to think about things, whatever's going on in your life. This is also good if you have that special someone with you and you just want to cuddle up and relax with them.

These CDMaximums(made in Russia) are getting more scare by the day, and it's no wonder. The commies have discovered 2 things: capitalism and wacked out music that I don't listen to and can't hum.

The company has decided not to print these anymore, so that's all folks. They don't answer e-mails, nor will they sell them anywhere near the USA. Cd's that have been sold are gone forever, as they will not print anymore of these crisp recordings, unless they get a firm order for 1,000 or more.

You'll also note that these two Beatle albums are not even available unless you purchase the Capitol Version (Vol.1) and even then you won't get the 11 bonus tracks.

I can't believe these are still unsold!!
