uncompromising.......2005-10-26
first 2 compositions are a bit meandering, although still very much an enjoyable and interesting listen with many beautiful moments in the nooks and cranies. I keep picturing getting lost on a foggy day in the hills somewhere.
second 2 pieces of electro-acoustic improvisations focus on deep textured tones from Braxton's auto sax playing with/against waves of other-worldly electronics eminating from Teihttp://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/communities/reviews/preview-your-review.giftelbaum's analog synths. these are Amazing.
A fine reissue of two long out-of-print Braxton albums.......1998-12-29
This Cd, comprised of two long unavailable recordings, is a welcome addition to Braxton's immense catalog. The recordings cover Braxton's career in two periods, 1969 (with Leo Smith and Leroy Jenkins) and 1976 (with Richard Teitelbaum). Braxton's collaberation with Tietelbaum is particularly intruiging, as it provides a fairly early example of the creativity they explore further on later albums. However, Braxton's session with Smith and Jenkins, while it is a true meeting of masters, seems to lack much of the provocative creative interplay that makes albums such as "This Time" and "Anthony Braxton" (also titled "B-X-N-O/47A") classics. Nevertheless, this album is a wonderful document of the virtuosity of these innovative musicians who have made some of the most daring experiments in music in the late 20th century.

This is essentially New Age Music, but with a difference: the music is very relaxing & at the same time, very energising! [I am aware that a lot of people have negative connotations about New Age music. In reality, New Age music is simply electronically synthesised music. Because of its amplitude, the music has much more subtle variations, thus making it much more relaxing &/or energising to listen to.]
It's actually part of a collection of 3, known as the HeartMath Collection (the other two are 'Quiet Joy' & 'Speed of Balance'), produced by HeartMath, a research outfit that is at the cutting edge of peak performance technologies. Their clinical research work is often cited in journals such as the Harvard Business Review, Journal of Innovative Management, The American Journal of Cardiology, Stress Medicine, and Journal of Advancement in Medicine. They have apparently earned global recognition for their unique research-based techniques & proprietary technology to transform the stress of change & uncertainty, & bring coherence & renewed energy to the workplace, & at home.
To really appreciate the music in the HeartMath Collection, I would suggest readers to read their publications first (& also personally experience the suggested stress-reduction exercises first hand!):
- Freeze Frame: One Minute Stress Management, by Doc Lew Childre;
- The HeartMath Solution: The Revolutionary Program for Engaging the Power of the Heart's Intelligence, by Doc Lew Chidre;
I have used the HeartMath Collection regularly in the office, in the car & at home, ever since I bought it in the mid-90's.
There are only four types of music CDs in my personal collection. They are:
- 'Relax with the Classics', the whole collection from the Lind Institute;
- The HeartMath Collection;
- The Hemi-Sync Music Collection, from the Monroe Institute;
- Steven Halpern's Inner Peace Music, also the whole collection;
Designer music for activating the heart.......1999-04-06
Doc Childre composed this music as part of his work in helping people to access their heart intelligence in times of stress or emotional disturbance. It is also designed to help counteract fatigue and access intuitive intelligence. Much of New Age music is relaxing, but this music is relaxing and energizing at the same time. I find it delivers on the above promises, especially when combined with simple exercises devised by Doc Childre. This album is beautiful listening music with a variety of tempos and styles.

This is Real Hip hop.......2004-07-30
I'm a huge fan of the underground hip hop scene. Commercial MCee's aren't saying much these days. Insight comes through with the rugged yet harmonic and jazzy beats, and highly intelligent rhymes (check out Black Inventors remix). If you like groups like Gangstarr, Tribe, Roots, and rappers like J-Live and Binary Star, you will definitely feel this joint right here. At first, looking at my man's iTunes collection, I didn't know what to expect from this dude but I give him props for putting out something unique and outside of the mold. A must-have for anyone who listens to REAL Hip Hop. This should be (but probably won't be due to lack of promotion and exposure) an instant hip hop classic. Don't sleep on this.

Not exactly "Utopia 84" but 3.5 stars and worthy of purchase!.......2007-06-29
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Sometimes forgotten in rock and roll history is drummer extraordinaire Ginger Baker's (Cream/Blind Faith) time with Hawkwind. "Zones" released in 1983 contains both studio and live performances.
Known for their incredible improvisation and esoteric nature the result is a shade under what I had hoped would transpire. What seems like an oxymoron, there are actually cuts on the album that are not stamped with the Hawkwind trademark.
For instance the single released in Europe "The Island"/"Motorway City" pairs the more typical Hawkwind approach on "The Island" but "Motorway City" is more accessible.
The second track "Dangerous Vision" offers a terrific vocal but the instrumentation is often held in check. There is plenty of Hawkwind firepower. "Social Alliance" and "Sonic Attack" are proper representations of the unique quality.
A fitting end to the album is "Brainstorm." At over eight minutes, it is the lengthiest tune on the record.
As the 1970's were ending the band started to construct some shorter compositions, with Ginger Baker onboard it would have been nice for a cut or two to exceed the ten-minute mark. It still is Hawkwind, we only wish there was more to go around.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

More Life Energy From Steve Coleman.......2006-12-16
The music of Steve Coleman is always inspiring. I recently played it to a pianist friend of mine who immediately said "this is how music should be made today". I had the same thought when I first heard Coleman's music.
This CD features Coleman and the Five Elements in their sizzling best - with Andy Milne (piano/keyboards), David Gilmore (guitar), Reggie Washington (electric bass), and Oliver Gene Lake Jr. (drums and percussion). The rhythms are as tight as they come, with each instrument free to take the music to different places, without any chaos taking place. Coleman's playing is so many things - smooth, rough, free, structured... certainly the most intersting performer today in my mind.
This CD was recorded live in front of a studio audience. The tunes sometimes sound like funk, sometimes like mainstream jazz, but it is misleading - the rhythms are never simple, the meters never symmetric. One would think this is how Charlie Parker would sound had he been born 30 years later. Try to follow the amazing "Alt Shift Return", and see how intersting the seemingly simple rhythm becomes !
Hopefully, this is where music is going, and every music lover should tune in.

Outstanding versions........2005-11-08
It's very complicated to write a review in Amazon, as you don't really know exactly what are this stars for; if they are for the works, for the performers, for the technical engineers, the booklet, all together...
Generally I use to give 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 stars to the performing version, not to the work itself. I know there's people who try to evaluate a work of art, putting stars to the artistic creation; I really don't agree. Of course I like some works much more than others, but I try to accept all of them as works of art. The performing, as something based on technical resources and much more comparable, is more easy to evaluate.
In this case, here we have some french quartets played in an outstanding way by the leaders of contemporany-music nowadays; the Arditti Quartet. I've listened some other versions for Duttileux's Quartet "Ainsi la nuit", but no one with the precision and master technical playing of the Arditti Qt. For Dusapin I don't know any other performing, but I really think it will be hard to beat this marvellous recording.
You can like or dislike the works, but the performance is 5 stars with no doubt, in my opinion.
Wonderful Dutilleux, but the Dusapin tends to the ordinary.......2003-12-03
This disc in the Arditti Quartet's bewilderingly extensive output is devoted to French quartets: Henri Dutilleux's 1976 classic Ainsi la Nuit and more recent quartets by the Xenakis pupil Pascal Dusapin. While the Dutilleux shows a major composer in full maturity and at the top of his form, the Dusapin is evidently a composer still finding his individual voice--and that is the primary problem with this disc.
Dutilleux's quartet has to be one of the finest post-war works in the genre. In seven movements (plus interludes) that play without a break, this seventeen minute work conjures up a bewildering variety of nocturnal moods, colours and atmospheres. Yet it is always strongly coherent, the writing unified by the composer's tendency to treat the four instruments of the string quartet as if they were one super-stringed instrument. The performance on this disc is absolutely stunning--the precision of the Arditti Quartet is matched by an imagination and colouristic range that's second to none.
The Dusapin works are more problematical. His second quartet, 'Time Zones', is a collection of 24 miniatures, again playing without a break, supposedly evoking the sensation of travelling constantly from place to place. For much of the quartet, though, I felt it came very close to an earthbound generic modernism; taking inspiration from various composers (Xenakis, Reich, Boulez, Berio, Dutilleux himself) without cohering into an individual voice. The later, more ferociously Xenakian sections did start to forge the work into a consistently dynamic whole, but 25 minutes into a work is no place to do so.
The third quartet is a step forward, though not necessarily more than one such step. Perhaps as a reaction to the extreme formal extension of the second quartet, Dusapin here retreats to almost the traditional four-movement form, with the slow movement placed third (I say almost, because the scherzo isn't very conventional, as it starts slow and ends fast). This is well-crafted music, but once again I did feel that it wanted a bit more of an individual voice.
This disc can be recommended in as much as that it offers the best performance I've heard of the Dutilleux. Any recommendation for the Dusapin has to be less positive, though others may find his blend of modernism to be more appealing than I did.
