1 out of 5 stars poor recording.......2007-04-30

Besides the bacground hiss, I found I had to turn the volume up to max just to hear it. So when you play more than one CD the others will be normal volume but when Kreisler starts you hear nothing and have to turn the volume all the way up to have it at low normal levels. So I recommend passing on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Travel to the Old Vienna.......2006-01-26

Sometimes the author isn`t the best performer of his own works. That`s not the case. I completely agree with the previous reviewer: yes, only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
While listening to this music you so wounderfully feel the spirit of the old Vienna, that most technically perfect record couldn`t compare with this impressions. Treat surface noise of the records made in 1912-1946 as the scent of that distant time (by the way, nearly the age gone) - and you would be completely satisfied, because the playing by Kreisler is so scincere and soulful. So if you like Kreisler - don`t think twice. This is CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars Only Kreisler Can Play Kreisler *****.......2005-05-08

What can I say? Only Kreisler can play Kreisler. Get a discography of Fritz Kreisler and start hunting down everything you can find by this man. You can compare violinists; Heifetz has astounding technique, Milstein's always wonderful, Oistrakh is a favorite of many, Kogan can play anything, etc., etc., etc.. But Kreisler... is a unique personality of the violin. Yehudi Menuhin said of him in his autobiography, there are many great violinists with perhaps greater technique in this area or that; but "Kreisler mystifies me." Bruno Walter, the great conductor, said of Kreisler, "He did not play the violin; he BECAME the violin." and this is true. There is something special about Kreisler that transcends violin playing itself. Something heavenly is communicated by him with his instrument. Transfers from old disks are always of varying quality. Kreisler lived a long time ago and recording techniques were very primitive; but Kreisler even seems to rise above the pops and the clicks. Other artists are drowned out by them but Kreisler soars above them and makes one forget they are there. You're focused on the beauty and the background noise seems to disappear entirely. Other violinists have tried
to play Kreisler and perhaps get the notes right, most notably among them, Zino Francescatti (who plays Kreisler better than any other man except Kreisler), but only Kreisler can play Kreisler.
If you want to hear it best, put up with the background hiss. It's worth it. If you want a modern recording, see if you can find Francescatti's tribute album to Fritz Kreisler. it's OOP, but an LP in mint condition sometimes appears on an online auction service. Why the Francescatti album ever went OOP I do not know. He is the only modern violinist that ever really tapped into the soul of 'Fritz' when he plays Kreisler. If the disk is ever again released, snap it up before it goes OOP again. In the final analysis, modern violinists, at most, will give you a representative selection of only about 16 tracks and usually you get the worn chestnuts over and over again. Enough of Kreislers own recordings are still available that you can still get the whole gamut of his discography if you just look. Do so!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2004-03-08

No crap...really? OF COURSE THIS RECORDING IS A TRANSFER! YOU THINK THEY HAVE DIGITAL RECORDING TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN???? Man, that review from Delaware annoys me.

Go with the first review. This recording is a must. It is one of the great violin recordings. Even my old violin teacher advise me to play some of Kreisler stuff to improve techniques. Kreisler is a legend. Lesson and appreciate the beauties of the violin.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing technical quality.......2000-08-29

I realize that this cd was a transfer, but I have other music that was transferred from old recordings, and they sound much better than this. The disappointing technical quality of the sound on this CD disturbs me. In fact, it sounds worse than the vinyl I already own. Very loud hissing, some popping. The music doesn't actually sound like it's been recorded in a tunnel, but the sound is not as full as I had hoped.

On the other hand, I bought this after comparing Kreisler's performance with Joshua Bell on the samples; and I find I always prefer Kreisler. With no disrespect to Mr. Bell, I find I prefer the composer performing his own music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars MUST BUY FOR FANS.......2007-02-24

This live recording has restored my faith and love in TFF. If you are a fan of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, do buy this. The CD alone is worth it for the concert quality performance (they are amazing live), but the DVD makes it even better. HIGHGLY RECOMMENDED AND WORTH THE PRICE.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money!.......2006-09-05

I've been a Tears For Fears fan since the beginning and I was gutted when they broke up in 1990. I've always felt the 14 years between The Seeds of Love and Everybody Loves A Happy Ending were "wasted".

I am so glad some official video surfaced of the ELAHE tour. I saw them here in Vegas twice on that tour and they were just as fabulous as ever. This Paris show is great, just wish there was more of it. Personally this DVD is worth it just to hear Roland speak French.

Amazon needs to fix the tracklisting though, the song is "Call Me Mellow" not "Fellow"

Anyway, a superb job. They sound super live and should not be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A Really Good Album.......2006-07-12

This album kind of flies under the radar & I highly recommend this one if you have none of TFF's live recordings from various underground sources. So if you have the extra cash, buy it because it has a bonus DVD as well! How can ya go wrong? (look for "Judemac forever" on search engine msn)

5 out of 5 stars Cleveland...OHIO!!!!.......2007-07-05

Being born and raised in Ohio I couldn't help myself from indulging myself into this band. This was the first CD I heard by Mushroomhead and golly was I rocken out. Definently a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Mushroomhead Rules.......2007-06-28

If you like slipknot, you will like this album. Slipknot got everything they know from these guys. Although Mushroomhead is definately more tasteful then the clown freaks. And their lyrics actually make sense.

5 out of 5 stars Great riffs on here.......2007-05-26

Great band, great album. Second release from Mushroomhead (not including the 4 released on their own prior to XX) Great heavy sound to shatter windows, just the way any metal fan loves it. Get this gem now.

5 out of 5 stars Vast improvement.......2007-04-10

I really dont care what the history of Mushroomhead/Slipknot is, I just want the music. The first Mushroomhead cd I heard was XX and that was alright but didnt really spark anything. I got this cd and it blew me away. This is an excellent cd, and probably will become a staple in my collection. I really enjoy all the songs and there isnt a weak track on the whole album. Id recommend this cd to any metal fan, and if you were turned off by XX, this album is way better.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2007-02-26

Maybe Mushroom head should worry less about their mask and image, and concentrate more on learning how to play a their instruments. I have never heard a metal band that was so horrid in my life. All Mushroom Head does is whine through every song with some easy power chords to go along with it. These guys are nothing that you havent heard a million times before, and they are just plain bad. How anyone can like this is beyond me, even if you love Nu Metal, there are so many bands from that genere that blow these guys out of the water. If you are aching for some good Nu Metal, then try Machinehead, Mudvayne, (older) Slipknot, or DevilDriver.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars mystery and fact.......2006-05-07

While I agree with the other reviewers that this is a fine recording, two precisions are necessary for the sake of accuracy. The disc is titled "Gregorian Chant" but in fact it is Mozarabic or Old Spanish Chant. The reviewer who wrote that the monks observe this rite is mistaken. The monks observe the same monastic rite as the monks of Solesmes and other Benedictine abbeys. The choir director at the time (1968), however, is a musicologist who prepared a special program of Old Spanish Chant for the historically based Archiv Produktion of Deutsche Grammophon.

5 out of 5 stars Gregorian Chant as it should always be!.......2005-02-15

The monks of Santo Domingo de silos follow the rites and traditions of the ancient Mozarabic period of Hispania (modern day Spain). This period stemmed from the Visigothic period of control over the former Roman protectorate. And from this period throughout the generations this form of pure, magical and yet authentic chant has been saved and will continue to be saved. I brought this CD initially for my stepdad but I decided to keep it with me after listening to it. I fell in love with the sound, the atmosphere and it made me great when I listened to it.
I hope to one day visit the abbey and listen to these chants in person and live. 22 tracks of solid gold chants and the voices are so in sync with each other that the real mystery is why there is not more monasteries like this one.

5 out of 5 stars The best Chant CD on the market........2004-04-14

By happy coincidence, this CD was my introduction to Gregorian Chant and while I have since listened to many more, this disc is clearly the best. Right from the opening Dominus Regnavit and Laudate Dominum, the listener is caught up in what seems to be a swelling wave of deeply felt emotion, all the more impactful for the pure voices. Follows in due course the majestic old Credo and lastly for the moving finale, the Lamentation of the Prophet Jeremiah. Sung with tremendous control and feeling by the monks of the Abbey of Santo Domingo, the sound quality and the depth of the individual voices is amazing. Listening with your eyes closed, you can picture cowled monks singing in an echoing hall, yet the acoustics are so good that while giving the listener a feeling of resonance in space, there isn't the faintest of ghost echoes. I learn from the inset that the Abbey of Santo Domingo in the village of Silos is one of the oldest surviving Benedictine monasteries in Spain and an earlier reviewer on this page, Jason Anderson, has written some very informative historical notes. The inset also has a nice piece on the abbey and the history of the chant, as well as the full text of the lyrics in Latin plus an English translation. I cannot recommend this CD too highly: whether you love Gregorian Chant or you just want a soothing listen for a quiet evening or a long drive, I guarantee you will not go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Un magnífico cd.......2001-11-18

5 out of 5 stars A RARE EXPERIENCE!.......2000-09-12

The stylistic and indeed musical perfection of the recorded legacy of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes aside (and what a legacy that is - and how impossible to set it aside!), this remains, in my view, the ultimate recording of liturgical chant. There is so much to recommend the recordings of Solesmes -the exceeding quality of their beautiful art, the exquisite singing -especially of that one anonymous tenor voice that seems not only to color but to create the 'sound' for which their choir is justly famed!- the aristocratic liturgical taste of Dom Gajard, and now of Dom Jean Claire, even the genuine poverty of the monastic life at Solesmes (I've been there and seen it) - yet, in this recording of the choir of monks of the Spanish Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos, there is an abiding aura so mingled of sorrow and joy that its effect cannot merely be audaciously touted, but must be absorbed like a holy ether in order to be justly experienced. While Solesmes has explored that vast body of prayer we know as Gregorian chant, the monks of Santo Domingo here offer chant from an earlier age, so-called Visigothic (Mozarabic) chant, rarely heard in our time before the liturgical relaxations subsequent to the Second Vatican Council. To listen to these monodic melodies so redolent of Spain's ancient Arabic past leaves us marked not only with their own intrinsic beauty, but allows us, I think, to hear Roman chant itself again in a fresh light. While the Kyriale included in this recording is perhaps more exactly called neo-Mozarabic chant, the main body of selections indeed come from the period prior to the Roman codification under Gregory, Spanish in heart, and universal in beauty; the remarkable 'Introibo ad altare Dei mei', the various Antiphons and Prayers intrinsic to an older national liturgical ideal usurped by Gregorian legislation, culminating in the astonishing 'Lamentation of Jeremiah' which, once heard, will never leave your heart. Recorded in the great Romanesque church of the Abbey, the acoustic ambience is perfectly suited to the sung prayer of these glad monks. If you enjoy listening to liturgical chant and have never heard this recording, you are unfinished and impoverished in your enjoyment. Get this recording and enter on the rich path of a rare experience indeed.

5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting and Amazing Work.......2007-07-29

Brubeck's Mass setting using his signature 5/4 time is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary, worship and celebration. The "Alleluia" alone is an incredible musical achievement. Brubeck her is clearly God's instrument - and a rare and virtuoso instrument he is!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful choral work + great jazz.......2007-02-09

This music may throw some people for a loop, as it did me at first, because it is a choral Mass and most of us don't realize that Dave composed choral pieces, with his wife doing the lyrics. This Mass was commissioned by 'Our Sunday Visitor' many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful! The operatic choral sections move into the jazz sections and are truly inspirational. My favorite songs are 'the Desert and the Parched Land/The Peace of Jerusalem' and 'All My Hope', which I can't get out of my head all day! Give them a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster Effort.......2004-05-05

I was very disappointed in this CD. This piece in no way compares with Brubeck's "Gates of Justice", which is spectacular. There are a few worthwhile moments for the soloists, but for the most part, the writing is uninspired.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Effort.......2002-07-23

"To Hope!" is Dave Brubeck's attempt at composing a mass, or Christian liturgy. The result is mixed. Unlike Vince Guaraldi's masterpiece "Grace Cathedral Concert," this is not a jazz piano mass. Instead, it is largely a contemporary-classical work, focused on vocals and traditional arrangements. It does, however, include several jazz passages, including one that swings almost like a '50s surf-rock record. Not everyone will like this recording, but every fan of jazz or contemporary sacred music should listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Dave Brubecks Works.......2000-03-15

This CD truly shows the diversity of the genius composer Dave Brubeck. Also credit should to be given to Russell Gloud, the conductor for this CD. This working is one of the greatest pieces by Mr. Brubeck. I recommend this CD to any classical music or jazz fan

    Album Description

French only pressing of the 2007 solo album from the Tears For Fears bassist/vocalist adds the bonus track 'Seven Of Sundays' (French Duet Version/Single Edit). Although bandmate Roland Orzabal may have been TFF's main songwriter, Smith's lead vocals on tracks like 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World', 'Mad World', 'Advice For The Young At Heart', 'Pale Shelter' and 'Change' helped solidify their success. Musically, Halfway Pleased continues in the tradition of Curt's Mayfield project and TFF's 2004 'reunion' album, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, which was their most accomplished album to date. Curt Smith remains an enormous talent more than 25 years after he entered the music business. XIII Bis.

    3 out of 5 stars It's unfortunate.........2007-04-15

Lassus is certianly one of my favriote composers, I have loved every thing I have ever heard from him. This CD consists of wonderful literature. However, im disappointed with the performance. The Oxfor Camerata, much like the Tallis Scholars, seem... very "vanilla," I suppose. In comparison to groups like, my personal favriote, the Hilliard Ensemble, or even compared to Anthony Rooley and the Consort of Musike, or the Hueglas Ensemble, Oxford comes off rather uninspired. They sing well, they have a pleasant (although very obviously British) sound. Yet they lack the emotion, and the individuality of the top early music ensembles. They fail to convey what would have been the style of the Rennaissance.

Overall, it is a fine CD. It still is sung beautifully, it's a wonderful selection, and above all, it is cheap. However, there are much better ensembles out there.

    2 out of 5 stars text problem.......2007-02-18

Sorry, but I am a little disapointed.Only one part Infelix ego has translated text. It is not easy to understand polyphonic latin!

5 out of 5 stars Two masses of great sensual beauty.......2005-07-13

Orlando Lassus or Roland di Lasso (c.1532 - 1594) stands as one of the most fascinating composers of the Seconda Prattica - a group of composers who stand apart from their predecessors in that their music reflects the social and political upheavels of the Reformation and Counter Reformation. The complex polyphony of the Prima Prattica came under attack as being mere artifice that obscured the meaning of the texts of sacred works and with it came a push towards an increasing dismantling of the extraordinary complexity that the previous generations had endowed music. Palestrina definitely shows such tendencies along with the refined pious delicacy of his music. Palestrina also begged humble forgiveness for writing the typically blatently erotic chansons in his youth, that were typical throughout much of the Renaissance - even the greatest composers wrote them. This seems to reflect an increasingly puritanical prudishness that was a characteristic of the Reformation and which the Counter Reformationists tried to outdo. Thereafter this sexual openess and innocence of expression was banished from composition - I can scarcely think of a single genuinely explicitly erotic text set to music by a major Western composer thereafter.

In stark constrast to Palestrina, Lassus tenaciously refused to succumb to this new spirit of prudery. The Humanist spirit in him silently rebelled against this wave of oppression. This reflects in his refusal to systematically disinherit himself of the polyphonic riches of the Prima Prattica that had been handed down to him and continued to happily write for five or six voices as it suited him. However, even more remarkable was the brazen refusal to give up writing parody masses based on explicitly erotic chansons - in blatant violation of the decrees of the Council of Trent. Of this tendency there is no better example than the Missa Entre Vous Filles. The original chanson comes from none other than the great Clemens non Papa (can you imagine Schubert or Brahms writing a Lied like this!):

Entre vous filles de quinze ans,
Ne venez plus à la fontaine,
Car trop aves les yeulx frians
Tetin poingnant bouche riant connin mouflant
Le cueur plus gay qu'une mistaine
Entre vous filles de quinze ans,
Ne venez plus à la fontaine!

    [You girls, fifteen years old,
Don't come to get water at the fountain,
    Because you have darling eyes,
Pert breasts, laughing mouths, warm little cunny
    Hearts gayer than a dream
    You girls, fifteen years old,
Don't come to get water at the fountain!]

Even where the choir sings 'Kyrie eleison' the listeners of Lassus' time must have known perfectly well where the melody came from. Whatever the original chanson parodied here, the crucial things is how truly remarkable the final work really is. For it is a mass of refined sensuality, as well as of an exquisite and deeply felt beauty.

The second mass here is Susanne un jour.

    Susanne un jour d'amour solicitée
Par deux viellardz, convoitans sa beauté,
Fust en son coeur triste et desconfortée,
Voyant l'effort fait à sa chasteté.
Elle leur dict, Si par desloyauté
De ce corps mien vous avez jouissance,
C'est fait de moy. Si ie fay resistance,
Vous me ferez mourir en deshonneur.
Mais j'aime mieux périr en innocence,
Que d'offenser par peché le Seigneur.

[Susanna faire, sometimes of love requested
By two old men whome her sweet looks allur'd
Was in her heart full sad & sore molested
Seeing the force her chastitie endur'd.
To them she said, if I by craft procur'd
Doe yield to you my body to abuse it,
I kill my soule, & if I do refuse it,
You will mee judge to death reproachfully.
But better tis in innocence to choose it,
Than by my fault t'offend my God on high.]
Translation by Nicholas Yonge from the Musica Transalpina, 1588

Renaissance paintings of the theme of Susanna take great pleasure in showing her in the nude while two dirty old men leered on and clearly Lassus is using a Biblical theme to endulge in a similar pleasure in the sensual aspects of the figure of Susanne. Yet this work too is ultimately remarkable first and foremost as a richly conceived polyphonic masterpiece. Both this and the other mass here help to explode the myth that Lassus' best music is to be found in his motets.

By way of stark contrast the one motet on this is set to the text by the demongogue preacher Savonarola. Savonarola is infamous for the 1497 Bonfire of the Vanities. They burnt items supposedly associated with moral depravity such as mirrors, cosmetics, jewelry, non-sacred books, gaming tables, fine dresses on a large fire at the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Even Sandro Botticelli threw his own works on the pyres. A backlash against the puritanical oppression forced upon the city of Florence soon followed and during Savonarloa's Ascension Day sermon on May 4, 1497, bands of youths revolted so that taverns were soon reopened, and men gambled openly in public. Savonarola's fall from grace was completed when he was accused of falsely claiming to see visions and uttering prophecies. With Machiavelli amongst the onlookers he was hung and burnt publically. The text of this motet 'infelix ego' (misfortunate I) was written on the eve of his public execution. One only wonders what motivated Lassus to set it to music.

The only real oddity in this CD are the notes by Jeremy Summerly which contains too little information to be of any help whatsoever. Most amusingly the text of the Savonarola is included but any direct quotation from the original chansons that Lassus based his masses is strictly avoided. There is only the one fleeting and blushing reference to Susanne en jour 'celebrating in galloping rhyme the wonders of the female anatomy' - a case of 'no sex please we're British' perhaps?

Nonetheless the performances here all do Lassus great justice. The sound of the Oxford Camerata has luminosity and sensual lyricism to fully convey the warmth of the writing. Summerly seems to have a genuine feel for the music of Lassus - something you can also sense with their recording of the Missa Bell' Amfitrit' altera.

    Definitely worth hearing!

    5 out of 5 stars Natural eloquence.......2002-03-31

Reviewers do not seem to have paid special attention to this CD, but I find it one of the most convincing recordings of late sixteenth-century polyphony. The Missa Susanne un jour and the setting of Infelix ego are among Lassus's best works, and receive here performances that are models of unforced phrasing and natural eloquence. The recorded sound (which sounds a little dull in some of the other recordings from this choir and location) is fully adequate to convey the warmth and fullness of Lassus's choral writing. It is a recording that I have listened to repeatedly for years with always renewed enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and Rich.......2000-12-30

The music here is "lush" (as the liner tells us) and rich. The voices of the Oxford Camerata never disappoint on this beautiful recording, made in the Chapel of Hertford College, Oxford. I was struck by the full harmonies of these pieces and by the Oxford Camerata's sensitive dynamics.

5 out of 5 stars One of the one hundred recordings in any age.......2005-04-26

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli felt an obssesive fascination by these three piano works.
This Chaconne performing maintains the perfect balance between the mistery and the elusiveness, in fact Benedetti gradually increases the tension level to unexpected heights. I got the Busoni version with this piece and Michelangeli gets very very close in idiomatic expresiveness.
The Carnaval was his glorious triumph in the famous London Recital in 1957. He recorded it several times. And recently I got a new perfomance recorded in Lugano where he makes with this work an absolute journey to the purest romatic tradition and far beyond.
Finally the Paganini Variations was another battlehorse for this legendary pianist. Benedetti remarks the dark side of the score with notable wisdom, and accents as anyone else the charming and rapture lyrical mood that Brahms knew to use so well. It's very difficult to play any Brahms variation due you must be inmersed in the real intention of every variation.
This Remastered album is a reference must for any serious collector item of refined taste and sensibility.
