By far Jane's Addiction's best album, Ritual De Lo Habitual is chock full of songs that are both catchy and experimental. The singles "Stop" and "Been Caught Stealing" are good examples; "No One's Leaving" has a nice funk edge with some busy guitar work, and "Ain't No Right" and "Obvious" are strong as well. Unfortunately, "Three Days" and "Then She Did . . ." are overlong and get bogged down well short of halfway through, but the album finishes strongly with "Of Course" and "Classic Girl". Jane's Addiction's funk-punk-rock mix is appealing, and never more so than on this album. --Genevieve Williams

One of the best albums of all time.......2007-06-08

This album is the soundtrack along with Jane's Nothing Shocking for my life when I was in highschool. I think it is a work of pure genius. The music has it all,jet fueled funk rock,love and sex everything. My altime favorite song on this record is without a doubt Three Days and after that No Ones Leaving. I can listen from start to finish but those songs are my favorites. Also the lyrics are poetry, you must check out Perry's writing in the linar notes entitled "To The Mosquitoes". This record has been the source of countless amounts of inspiration for writing song lyrics and writing music. If your into Jane's you should read the book Whore's. This album is the best,also check out their other albums.

Some of the best rock ever made.......2007-05-17

What an album! This is REAL alternative-rock, back when it really WAS an alternative to something. It's got bits of funk, prog, folk, psychedelia, whatever, in addition to hard rock. It all comes together on the the three long guitar workouts: Three Days (JA's best ever IMHO), Then She Did and Of Course. Dave Narravo was (and still is) a talented creative guitarists. And where to hear that better than these pieces. And the lyrics on those first two... amazing. So the three funk/prog/folk/psychedelic/hard-rock songs rule supremely, but you knew that already. The record's first half is just as good though, with some equally memorable, more conventional rockers: the funky hit Been Caught Stealin' is probably the catchiest song about crime I've ever heard. A great song to blast. The rockers Stop and No One's Leaving are also quite cool, even if they're a lot more normal than the best songs, they still pack a punch. And these guys can do riffs!
This is to me JA's best album, a classic for the ages. The early '90s was a very creative period for rocck music (almost as much so as my beloved '65-'75!), and this is probably the best album to come from the era.

The end of JA's first era.......2007-02-10

Before the ulikely reunion with Dave Navarro etc this album was considered to be that last JA album we'd have bestowed upon us by this most famous of Perry Farrells vehicles. And like the previous two slabs from this most eclectic of heavy art rock acts it's a scattered journey.

From the stop start attack of Stop! to the rants of later tracks onthis disc this is not the sort of stuff your going to hear on an easy listening station. Or even a mainstream metal radio station. In actual fact the majority of this album is hard to pin down which is perhaps why so many people loved this band. The listener has to really wrestle with much of this album, Been Caught Stealing and perhaps Stop! being the only two tracks that really strike me as being fairly linear or at leat easily digested.

Never having swum as close to the current as Farrell and the lads I find it hard to really fathom what is going on here. Perhaps it's something only mind expanding drugs can unlock. Certainly my more chemically adventurous friends back in those long gone high school days seemed to get more out of this labrynthical musical offering. Ultimately to me this album just didn't penetrate my phsyche - coming across as an angrier Hawkwidn in terms of me not really knowing what's going on though where Hawkwinds' art rock was minimalist the JA lads strafe their listeners with mentally frayed lyrics and dive bomb t hem with musical moves that fit perfectly in a disjointed way, like you've woken up in an alternate musical universe.

Art rock sequing into art metal, JA give the listener precious few handholds with which to climb the mountain, riffs are barely worthy of the name in some cases while in others they are totally accessable and then disappear.

My best advice for the newcomer is to get the accepted masterpiece of Nothings Shocking, then this disc which will forever known as their second best and if your still on board then try their self titled debut. Of course I'm discounting their later 'reunion' albums as I've not heard them and don't want to comment on 'em and lead you astray. Though the tour for Strays was a fun gig....

Perhaps the most helpful thing I can say is that the new fan should try to pick up the bands catalogue cheaply as listening to JA'a albums out of their temporal time and space will never give you an appreciation of just how influential their music and persona was. A band that, a touch like Nirvana, were more influential than they were actually good in and of themselves. A low four stars IMHO.

... and this is the last, most literate treatise on the sparks that fly between those three discrete phenomena that I can remember. Nothing has come close ever since: this is the quintessential Los Angeles spaced-out, drugged-out rock slab upon which millions of minds were soul-sacrificed since the day of release.

"Ritual" is a bright light among the used bins, screaming out at you from two (!!!) distinct and meaningful slices of cover art, and if memory serves me, I snatched up both for the hell of it. The first listen was at a party on a sweltering summer afternoon into spacy hot evening, the CD thrust upon me by a buddy who was also in a pretty popular indie-rock band at the time who claimed to have been inspired and changed already, two days after its release. I bought it the next day. I made out to it, listened to it on road trips, put it on mixtapes for friends, stared at the cover, set it in stone. I carried the novena thingy in my wallet for a while too.

A little context: the pseudo-political ramblings of a very heady Perry were consistent with the open-eyed awakening of (true) gen-X youth of the time: a time when there was no internet spoon-feeding and word-of-mouth was the order of the day. I seem to recall a real stream of interest in generational politics and a true alternative ethic: Fugazi and the whole DC thing were exploding in air, Douglas Coupland had just written his book, China and Eastern Europe were simmering and worldwide global crapola was everywhere. The state of the environment was resurrected as a social issue. We were finally figuring out that we had to live in a world with something called AIDS. Even frivolous pop-culture stuff like "My Own Private Idaho" was part of this generational, twenty-something awakening. "Ritual" was the soundtrack to this revolution of the mind that seemed to be erupting in my heart and those of my friends. Something was changing.

The album is brilliant. Nothing is filler. It was like a scream from L.A., and the music was all over the map. Perry's vocals were attacks. The rhythm section was apocalyptic and buzzing. And good grief - Navarro - the first Guitar God of the 90's - what ground he didn't cover in the initial five tracks is mopped up with sonic reverb and melancholy in the end, a wan, wasted vision closing with the underrated "Classic Girl", a sunset to a sonic excursion on a scope with the very best epic rock from any era. This was the 90's at its doorstep, and "Ritual" set the tone for the entire decade, with a truly astonishing and fertile underground scene earthquaking in its afterglow. Everything that came after seemed to spring from this source: from Jawbox to grrl rock (Babes, L7, and so on), from shoegaze to garage rock (did MBV and Dinosaur really tour? what I wouldn't give today), from music to movies to political activism to interpersonal change... everything just erupted after "Ritual". Just erupted.

The importance, vision, and intensity of this album cannot be overstated. It's one for the ages.

A fun album!.......2006-05-16

It stuns me how Jane's Addiction is such an unknown band today, compared to Zeppelin and stuff... n e way, here r my revus 4 the songs:

Uncommon Ritual.......2007-06-27

Utterly fabulous! This album is an important addition to any collection of Edgar Meyer's work, or a great introduction for anyone interested in modern American folk music. The songs will keep your head nodding and your toes tapping as you listen to pieces that range from exquisitely simplistic to incredibly complex.

Background Music?.......2007-01-02

This is a brilliant, beautiful, fun album that really makes Meyer's command of a complex and much under-appreciated instrument seem god given. In spite of the fact that there aren't any words the music on here stakes a claim for itself outside of just background music because it can be pretty edgy and raw at times. I like the combination of old folk tunes covered and Meyer's avant-garde double bass compositions, although this album's not for those looking for lots of covers of classical tunes.

An absolute must-buy for any collection........2006-07-01

This is an amazing album! The combination of talent, musicianship, and artistry on this album is startling. It is a perfect blend of classical, rock, blues, jazz, and folk influences; there is really something for everyone here. One cannot listen to this album without getting lost in the music. As a fellow composer and string player, I highly recommend Uncommon Ritual.

Creative Composers with a New Vein of Music.......2006-04-09

There is a real joy in discovering the work of contemporary composers who lighten the music world with abundant creativity. Such is the case for Edgar Meyer, B?la Fleck and Mike Marshall. These three not only compose but also perform their own compositions on this completely delightful CD sampler.

The works marry American folk tune semblances with folk music sounds from stray parts of the world. But they also know their classical training and the roundelays on old themes and styles prove to be some of the most exciting. Edgar Meyer plays Bass, Contrabass , Mandocello, and Piano; B?la Fleck plays Banjo, Electric Guitar, Gut String Guitar, Mandolin, national steel guitar, and Track Performer; and Mike Marshall plays Guitar, Mandocello, Mandola, Mandolin, and Track Performer. Just listing the instruments involve in this m?lange of works suggests that the music is unlike any you may have heard before, especially in the chamber music atmosphere it is played.

All three artists are gifted with fertile minds and technical demands for the instruments used. The result is a recital of endlessly interesting music, as fresh as morning sun and equally as welcome! Grady Harp, April 06

Mott's Ritual.......2006-10-10

In the lead up to Christmas 1972 there was a massive disturbance in the force as the mighty Hawkwind had a freak hit single with their `Silver Machine ` reaching Number three in the singles chart. I am not saying that this exactly made Hawkwind into pop stars, but it certainly gave them access to a far wider audience.
`Silver Machine' was even more of a freak than it appears. For a start it was a live recording, which was almost unheard of in singles land, especially as it was nearly five minutes long (even if it had been heavily edited with Robert Calvert's vocals completely erased and replaced with the far more aggressive growl of Hawkwind's bass player Ian Kiliminster, known to all as Lemmy). The sight of the Hawkwind video being played next to the Nolan Sisters on Top of the Pops did bring a smile to the face, but imagine if they had let Lemmy into the same studio as the Sisters?
It's not as though Hawkwind had not already enjoyed success, as their first three albums had already charted in the U.K. `Hawkwind' (1970), `In Search of Space' (1971) (complete with fabulous foldout cover and Hawklog), and `Doremi Fasol Latido' (1972) which had a vaguely space concept.
But with the money generated by a hit single Hawkwind decided to take their Space Ritual on the road for a massive tour of the United Kingdom and surrounding planets. A road crew was brought in, the most impressive display of lights were acquired under the auspicious eye of Liquid Len accompanied by his crew of Lensmen, costumes were fashioned, famous English D.J. Andy Dunkley was appointed Mothership control, one of the most impressive stage settings was put together to house the band for their rocket ride, actual dancers were put on the payroll and given chorography, and most impressively the band put in some rehearsal time.
The band had been stable for a whole year, which for this bunch of space cadets was in itself an event. Baring in mind that there had already been three other bass players before Lemmy secured the job, a lead guitarist had been lost and nobody had bothered to replace him, whilst the drum stool had already moved into Spinal Tap mode. It was almost a rule in the band that they never did two studio albums with the same line up.
From these early beginnings, though, nobody could have ever imagined that over the years Hawkwind would have such a heavy influence on such diverse musical threads as Ambient, World, Disco (seriously), Trance, Stoner Rock, Heavy Metal, and of course Space Rock.
Fortunately for us all several of the shows were recorded, and the best of two of them from Liverpool and Manchester have been spliced together to give the complete experience, all done in the correct running order. This was first released as a double album in 1973 at the price of a single album, Hawkwind being Hawkwind and always giving value for money. As well as a poster size foldout cover, you also got two booklets, one telling the story of the Space Ritual joining the dots between songs, the other giving you all the information you could possibly want about the tour.
In 1996 EMI went one step further and re-released the Space Ritual in Digi-Pak form reproducing the original artwork, whilst adding some extra photos from the tour. The music itself has been wonderfully re-mastered to give a much clearer sound than the original vinyl, or for that matter the first CD release. Due to time constraints first time round (you could only get eighty minutes of music on four sides of vinyl) the encore of `You Shouldn't Do That' had to be left off. Well no more; here you get the full concert encore and all. As if that was not enough over twenty minutes of bonus live Hawkwind has been tacked onto the end with two tracks from the hard to get Greasy Truckers benefit concert.
The concert starts with the Starship Hawkwind on final countdown for its rocket ride. Robert Calvert, Hawkwind's resident poet, gets things underway with `Earth Calling' amidst an array of Hawkwind, bubble music, audio generators, countdowns, swazzles, electronic robot music, swishing, and after burns.
Blastoff occurs with Dave Brock blazing out the riffs from his sonic axe of `Born To Go'; then the rest of the band comes thundering in. Now you must remember that nobody had ever bothered to mention to Lemmy that the bass guitar was a rhythm instrument, as he goes note for note with his captain's guitar. Simon King on drums may have had his failings, but subtlety was not one of them as he thrashes away for all he is worth.
Everybody's favourite, hippy Nik Turner hoots and honks his way through every song on his battered saxophone, only reverting to the flute for those short quieter moments when Robert Calvert would get up to read out some of his poetry or to speak out the words of Michael Moorcock the famous science fiction writer who had written special passages for the Space Ritual. `Sonic Attack' is particularly disturbing in the concept of the Space Ritual, with the whole band echoing the narrator's speech. Then behind this you had the twin attack of Del Dettmar and Dik Mik on synthesisers, audio generators, and electronics giving out that very special Hawkwind wall of sound. The songs were most of `Doremi Fasol Latido' plus any songs that fitted in from the Hawkwind back catalogue. `Masters of The Universe' for example fitted in very well, plus material specially written for the mission. This was Heavy Metal at its very best, no matter what different wrapper you want to give it.
Of course Hawkwind was a very visual band in every way. Out the front of the stage for the journey was the larger than life Amazonian dancer Stacia, who somehow during each performance managed to lose every stitch of space garb adorning her ample body. As there were always a lot of spotty sixteen year old boys down the front of the stage, it probably means that Stacia was the first naked female seen by thousands of young lustful teenagers. To answer your next question, "Yes, those thoughtful people from EMI have included a few snapshots in one of the booklets," purely for historic reasons you understand. I know this has nothing to do with the music, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
More than thirty years later, Hawkwind are still flying, sadly without Stacia, who went off and married drummer Roy Dyke, which makes her Mrs Dyke, hmmm. Lemmy has of course gone on to become the founder of Heavy Metal with the mighty Motorhead. Whilst David Brock, with new Hawknauts, still leads Hawkwind, who released a new studio album in 2005 called `Take Me To Your Leader', their first album since `Distant Horizons' in 1997. Hawkwind's Space Ritual is a great trip.

i'd like to say to the other reviewer who said don't kid yourself that this is nonsense hello it's called space rock for a reason because it doesn't have to make sense and being spacey and trippy is kool man better try it something you may enjoy it
than working the 9 to 5 circle

but hey anyway a truly great live cd from the pioneers of space/rock hawkwind yeah the drumming is repative but it's cool
man way kool and if your a pot smoking hippy there's nothing better than listening to this album.. hey man i must sound stoned well maybe i am, who knows?

Psychedelic Warlords!.......2005-10-01

I have been a HawkFan since the acid daze of the early 70's and I highly recommend this album (and most others) by Hawkwind! They are unique and not widely known in the U.S. although they have an almost cult following around the world. Their "Live" perforances are legendary (which is why I chose to review this album). The British fantasy/sci-fi author Michael Moorcock is a huge fan and has collaborated on some Hawkwind lyrics from time to time. The band members change often (Dave Brock being the only constant) and that is part of their mystique. If you like Heavy Metal/Space Rock you will Love Hawkwind and "Space Ritual"!

One of the best live cds ever.......2005-03-09

The bad things first. Yes, it is a bit overlong, and yes, some of the spoken poems are a bit insipid. Having said that, this cd contains some of the best live music I've ever heard.

The heart of the cd is the old (side 2 + 3) from the original album - that is, from "Lord of Light" to "Brainstorm". "The Black Corridor" is one of the spoken poems that actually works. You then get 8+ minutes of a monster song "Space is Deep" that is truly amazing - music so thick and nuanced that it could be sliced with a knife.

After some electronic noodling comes "Orgone Accumulator". You don't need to know what an orgone accumulator is to enjoy (though it doesn't hurt - try googling for it). "Upside Down" is fairly forgettable, but then comes another halfway decent poem "10 Seconds to Forever" and then, what may be one of the best live songs ever (any genre any musician). "Brainstorm" is one of those songs that you can listen to again and again - the lyrics don't mean much (though they set an interesting vibe) but the music...o the music. This is a song that deserves to be played as loud as you can get away with.

As for the rest of the cd...well, some interesting bits and some embarrassing bits ("Sonic Attack" in particular is outstanding in a bad movie sort of way). But who cares. Edit it down to 40-50 minutes and you have something to enjoy again and again. Hard to believe this came out five years after the beatles broke up...hard to believe hawkwind never became more than a cult success. Get it and enjoy!

Don't Kid Yourself.......2005-01-04

I loved this when it came out, but I also loved lots of things then that weren't good for me. Not that this is harmful in any way... it's just that it is really, really awful.

Lemmy is the only one in the band that could play with any facility or sense of melody, and even he wasn't exactly at his best then. The drummer is an unsteady, two-lick metronome, and Dave Brock continuously uses a wah pedal on his guitar solos to try to cover up for the fact that he sounds like he's playing with his toes. Overlay it all with undifferentiated sonic sludge, add a flute/reed player who seems to have never learned half the notes on either instrument, and sprinkle with "cosmic" lyrics that weren't so much goofy as stupid - that was Hawkwind.

Don't buy the hype. Hawkwind was always terrible, if terribly sincere. They were a joke then, and if you pay what they're asking for this idiocy, the joke's on you. Want space rock? Buy Gong, or even Planet Gong, not this mud.

Excellent Educational Tool .......2007-07-07

Chants: Ritual Music is a great CD for learning popular songs used in the Wiccan/Pagan community. Not only are you likely to hear these chants in any public rituals attended, but you can also use them in solitary practice. The chants are simple enough in case you intend to modify them, or you can put your favorite track on repeat and use it as background for meditation.

Each chant is, on avergage, about two or three minutes long, which means you have plenty of time to become familiar with the melody and words, but before it gets drawn out or boring. The lyrics are also printed in the accompanying booklet.

The chants are lovely, and most have simple harmonies, which can also be learned fairly easily. The singers are from the Reclaiming Community so while they are certainly enthusiastic, they are not professional musicians. However, this is a high-quality recording.

I facilitate a teaching coven, and I can see myself using this CD as a valuable tool for years to come. recommend this CD to anyone looking for basic beginner Pagan chants.

Easy to learn and powerful........2007-03-10

This is just what I was looking for. It didn't matter to me that the singing was not perfect. I was looking for simple, meaningful, easy to learn pagan songs and chants. I use them all the time in rituals. They're awesome.

Great CD for rituals and classes.......2005-10-11

This simply-recorded CD contains 19 of the most-loved chants from Reclaiming-tradition Witchcraft. The arrangements are simple and clear, making it easy to learn chants in a few listens.

If you are wanting chants and songs for small rituals, classes, or other events, this is the CD to get.

The CD is not "easy listening," and might not make the best background music for a Pagan-themed art opening. Most chants are drums-and-voices only.

But the recording is actually very listenable, and I enjoy putting it on from time to time, just to be reminded of an old chant I've forgotten about.

Reclaiming also produced "Second Chants," which is more polished music in the same vein; and "Let It Begin," which is music from the Spiral Dance ritual. Both are excellent.

If you want to learn useful chants for ritual and classes, "Chants" is the CD for you.

Inspiring!.......2005-10-08

I just listened to this CD and I can't get these inspiring chants out of my head (not that I would want to)!
I can definately see my husband and I using these chants in rituals and for just sitting around and singing.
I felt my spirit uplift as I played this CD. Each and every person that sang or played an instrument brought something spiritual and powerful to these chants.
If I had to pick one word to describe this CD... it would be "inspiring". I was inspired not only to sing along, but to dance and feel the energy within and around. Inspiring.

Collected here are several simple chants and songs inspired by the practices of Pagan Witchcraft. Intended more as a teaching tool rather than as an 'easy listening' piece, Chants provides several tracks that are appropriate for use in circle and for inducing trance. Most of these chants are naturally (and appropriately) repetitive, while a few others will classify more as songs whose melodies and rhythms are bound to delight and inspire. If you are looking for something to sit back and relax with while sipping a glass of wine then look elsewhere, but if you are intending to learn a body of material than can be used or adapted for circle or coven use then Chants fits the bill nicely.

This is packaged in a clear slipcase and 8 panel fold-out digipack, similar to the legacy or universal deluxe re-issues that have been released lately. The DVD worked in my DVD player even though it's PAL, and I don't have any fancy player, it was some 80 buck radio shack thing.. great art, great booklet and cool visuals on the DVD. the 5.1 mix isn't that radical, but it's good to hear it all at once instead of on 2 dvds..

Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine

FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15

I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...

I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.

The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.

Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.

Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23

It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.

Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19

Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.

I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.

Can I add a few more stars?

Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12

This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.

Old school thrash metal with a dark, slow groove. Clean sounding vocals well sung by frontman Chuck Billy, Blistering solos ripped with absolute finness and perfection by guitarists Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, a steady, pounding rythym section from bassist Greg Christian and drummer Louie Clemente. I would love to see this original lineup put out a new recording sometime in the near future.

Huge Letdown.......2006-03-16

I cant believe there are so many positive ratings given to this sub-par Testament release. Testament must have taken hints from Metallica and tried to attract a different audience. This is not a horrible album, but compared to any other Testament album, it is easily their worst. Only the die-hard Testament fan, or those into commercial metal should pick this up.

Worse than Turbo.......2006-01-30

There are a few albums that have historical significance as the "end of eras." This is one of those albums. This CD somehow exceeded the disapointment of Judas Priest's infamous Turbo. The Ritual is #1 on my list of most-disapointing albums of all time. Testament at the time was my favorite band. I remember buying this CD when it came out, and nearly slashing my wrists. I couldn't believe that such a great thrash band could go pussy-up so spectacularly. The only reason to buy this CD is to appreciate the history of a great band turning into "just another washup." Except for one or two good songs on subsequent albums, they never recovered from this debacle.

Great CD.......2007-04-07

I remember when I 1st got this cd a loooooong time ago. I was upset how I thought it sucked, I really didn't care for it besides like three tracks. One day...well night I had nothing to do so I took my iPod and got the lyrics out and just listen to the whole cd through while reading the lyrics. That I think just helped me made me understand the album even more then when I 1st listen to it and just skimed the lyrics a few times and just listening to it whileplaying video games, reading, or whatever. This is a great solid cd. If your a fan of heavy metal then you really need to check out this cd. I highly recomend getting this cd.

Some Sympathy.......2006-09-22

As an album it's very repettitive kinda punkish metal, but also compared to Use Once and Destroy it's even worse. I was skeptical when Phil made a new band, but with the release of Use Once and Destroy I had no need to worry until now. I really don't think this band'll go anywhere compared to Down and Pantera. I love Phil as a metal vocalist and hey with these guys he sounds even heavier, but everything's just to basic.

Good hardcore.......2006-02-09

Many music fans are quick to dismiss Phil Anselmo's side projects because they hastened Pantera's break-up. But once you really give Superjoint Ritual a shot, and realize that this band's sound is quite different from Phil's other bands (like Pantera), you will probably come to enjoy "A Lethal Dose of American Hatred" quite a bit. This is a good hardcore album; it's full of meaty, Sabbath-y, doom-y riffs, pounding drums, and howling vocals. Several of these tracks (i.e. the blistering and ultra-heavy "Permanently") crush anything on "St. Anger," and are easily among the best metal songs of 2003. Songs like "Dress Like A Target" and "Stealing A Page Or Two From Armed & Radical Pagans" (catchy title!) feature lurching riffs which sound tailor-made for headbanging, thumping drums, and Phil's constipated grunting. Other highlights include the heavy, grooving guitars and strangulated howl on the album opener, "Sickness," the almost buzzsaw riffs on "Personal Insult," and "Never To Sit Or Stand Again" (which has a few really long, tortured yells and a pounding rhythm). The album, as a whole, is too short, and many of the songs begin the same way (with Phil counting "One, two, three..."), but all in all, it's a very solid release. And if you're craving a dose of Phil, and you don't yet own this album...what are you waiting for?!

I read these reviews first then I listened. In no way can I take seriously a discussion of musical style or lyric content concerning this disc. Vocal quality ... there is no quality no talent needed to produce that gutteral nonsensical sound. Musicianship, none is present here. Lyric ... simplistic deluded are the only words to describe.

Masterful!.......2005-06-15

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Philip Anselmo is the indefatigable frontman for three of the heaviest bands in existence--Pantera, Down, and now Superjoint Ritual, possibly the most extreme of Anselmo's belligerent bands. Unrepentant, unrelenting, long-in-the works songs on this incendiary debut include a 1989 cut about the Manson Family entitled "Creepy Crawl," and the portentous gut-wrencher that gives the band its name, a 23-word ditty that ends with "get killed." Anselmo has created a raw metal onslaught, more punk-thrash brutality and less groove-oriented than Pantera. This hardcore underground supergroup has its moments on the memorable "All of Our Lives Will Get Tried" and the more midtempo, but no less growling and vocally merciless "The Alcoholik." Superjoint Ritual pull no punches and have no remorse, just check songs such as the musically and lyrically blunt "Antifaith," with its chorus "dischord [sic], fear, psychosis, then the grave." Not bad, but..........2007-01-07

Eh, these guys were above average I guess. The main reason I gave this a 3 is because Phil broke up Pantera and Down, both who were far superior bands, to start this. If these guys were maybe a one album project, I may have given it a 4. This band was obviously more punk oriented than Phil's two original bands. The riffs are pretty catchy, but when compared to Pantera & Down, they are rather simple. Not only that, but there are no leads on this album whatsoever. The songs are brutal and some are very catchy, which gives this some points. However, this CD just seems to be all brawn. None of the technicality and creativity found in the above two bands is present here.

Fortunately, Phil left this band behind to go back to Down. Overall, i'd say finish your Pantera(RIP Dimebag) and Down collection before you consider buying this. Check it out if your a HUGE Pantera fan or if you're on a budget or something, but I can't really recommend this to a casual metalhead.

Serious metalhead ear candy.......2006-04-22

In 2001, after Pantera released "Reinventing The Steel" a year earlier, Phil continued work on two of his other bands, Necrophagia and Viking Crown, as well as starting a new group, Southern Isolation. Then Phil returned in 2002 with Down and Superjoint Ritual. Superjoint actually released their first demo in 1997, but they officially debuted in 2002. "Down II" proved to be quite a disappointment, but, fortunately, SJR's "Use Once And Destroy" is very cool. This album is much more hardcore-influenced and underground-sounding than anything released by Pantera or Down. The downtuned guitars, fast drumming, and Phil's constant, throat-straining, lung-stretching yells make this record a very raw, seething, dissonant, relentless, and sonically crushing assault. There are a few moments when a song will sound somewhat traditional or catchy, but then Phil's roaring voice will explode through your speakers and shatter that song's opportunity. Phil hinted at this type of extreme vocal style on Pantera's 1996 disc, "The Great Southern Trendkill," as well as "Reinventing The Steel," but he only fully lets loose on this album. Phil's performance isn't as great or expansive as it was on past releases with his name on it, but it is every bit as expressive and it helps to make these songs as intense as they are.

Most of "Use Once And Destroy" is very fast, but it does sound somewhat like Phil's other band when the tempos slow down. Two examples of this are "The Introvert," which sounds like a "Far Beyond Driven"-era tune, and "Superjoint Ritual," a slower, mostly instrumental track which sports a fairly big groove and blowtorch, jackhammer guitars, could be a b-side from "The Great Southern Trendkill."

"Oblivious Maximus," opens this album, and might be the best song on here. It's completely instrumental and boasts blistering, pounding guitars and drums, as well as a fast tempo change. In addition to the usual high pitched screams, "It Takes No Guts" puts low, constipated bellows on top of more scorching riffs. The walloping "4 Songs" is backed by machine gun drum patterns, and a few of Phil's patented, long shrieks. (It sounds like he just had his wisdom teeth pulled without any Novocaine.) Elsewhere, when "All Of Our Lives Will Get Tired" hits its peak, it's almost deafening, with squealing guitars and vocals, and "Drug Your Love" and "Haunted/Hated" are explosive, pounding squalls of prominent double bass work and fiery, careening guitars.

"Use Once And Destroy" surely won't cater to everyone's tastes. If you don't like melody and harmony deficient music with turbo charged riffs and vocals which could peel paint off of walls, you should not even consider this disc. And if you're a casual metal fan, you might enjoy this album only in small doses. But serious metalheads (like me) and hardcore fans (also like me) will think this stuff is pretty bad ass.

A friend gave me this CD...I listened to it a couple times, man this band sucks..No solos, not much thought, simplistic riffs, and nonstop screaming...Phil broke up Pantera over this garbage? F uck you Phil.

An extreme metal band that combines thrash with speed and threatins to shatter the ground every heart wrenching second. Superjoint Ritual manages to let the riffs go to a crawl and just tear it up with thick distortion when they are not playing fast and aggressive. If you have any recollection of Phil Anselmo you can just imagine him growling and screaming over it all. Superjoint Ritual is a hardcore force to be reckoned with and a band I find far more superior to the newer bands on the scene today.

Extreme Metal CD that doesn't dissapoint... .......2006-01-03

I'll be honest...I heard F**k Your Enemy on the metal channel. I had no idea who SJR was and had no idea Phil was the vocalist. I was just impressed by what I heard. It was at a time when I was still developing my musical tastes for extreme metal. Since then I got into a whole load more extreme metal but these guys were one of my first. It has fast heavy riffing that will keep you entertained if you can handle it. It might take some getting used to Phil's vocals on here but I adapted easily. You should give it a shot.
