5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds.......2007-07-18

If you like soft sounds from the 60's and 70's, this is THE album for you. Memories flooded over me in wondrous waves when I listened to this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Bert's best.......2007-04-10

CD is very soothing. I listen to it when I need a calming influence. Wonderland By Night is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars I'm A Kid Again.......2007-02-23

Like everyone else, I know Bert Kaempfert's music from watching Sandy Becker. I smile every time I hear it. I'm sorry that "Echo In The Night" is not on this CD, though. It was one of my favorite songs to listen to on the radio when I was a kid. It's amazing how the music stays with you after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Bert Kaempfert.......2007-01-12

I am old enough to remember the Sandy Becker Show, the Match Game and several other shows that used Mr. Kaempfert's music as a theme or sound logo. The music on this CD is carefully re-mastered and sounds as fresh as it did in 1966.

If you remember my above references, too, then pay extra attention to Afrikaan Beat, That Happy Feeling and A Swingin' Safari.

5 out of 5 stars Great Artist, Great Music.......2006-11-03

This cd really exemplifies the composing and conducting talents of Bert Kaempfert. This album is cheerful with a wonderful blend of winds and strings....simply the BEST!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a great CD!.......2007-02-05

My children had heard 'Dominic the Christmas Donkey' and 'Peppino the Italian Mouse' previously. We enjoyed Lou Monte's songs so much that we bought this CD. The entire family enjoys it, as well as our children's friend's who sing along when carpooling with us. I highly recommend this CD for both children and adults alike. It's a refreshing medley of songs some of which are sung in both English and Italian. We especially enjoyed 'Mamma get the hammer there's a fly on Pappa's head!' 5 Stars to Lou Monte!

5 out of 5 stars Calypso aye, Calypso Italiano- Great CD.......2007-01-13

We ordered this CD before the holidays mostly to have Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey, but we were totally wowed by the rest of the selections. From Pepino and Pasqual to Please Mr.Columbus, they all rock!
Lou Monte and his songs bring you back to a different era. His voice is unique and his message simple- have fun. For this Italian American household it is the perfect blend. From the 3 year old to the lone Irish guy everyone enjoyed.

Lou Monte one of my favourites of my days as a young boy growing up in Mauritius and listening to the big stars of the day. This album takes me back to those days when "Roman Guitar/Calypso Italiano/Lazy Mary/Eh Marie Eh Marie" were practically heard everyday and ruled the Charts.Buy it,it is a must for any decent music lover's collection.

It also includes the ultra-rare duet "Come Softly To Me" by Oliver and Lesly Gore! Completely remastered from the best sources available, this CD is a "must have" for music lovers and collectors alike.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Why You Been Gone So Long" I picked up the remastered CD!.......2007-07-22

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

To fully appreciate the everlasting mark Oliver's "Good Morning Starshine" (Although he is not the composer) has left in the listeners ears the song is crafted with such precision that if the rest of the CD were blank this is a must own.

"Good Morning Starshine" rightly opens the Greatest Hits package. A timeless song that had wide scale appeal from the fan of Top 40 Radio to the listener of Album Rock, the 3:39 have no imperfections only brilliance.

Oliver has more in his arsenal than being a one hit wonder. "Jean" would have been a quality song for any performer with a certain vocal quality but Oliver's delivery of the lyrics brings it to the next level. The first two tunes show the wide range of his vocal strengths.

If the song "Come Softly To Me" sounds familiar it was a hit for the "Fleetwoods." Lesley Gore and Oliver have a brilliant duet found here.

"Early Mornin' Rain" originally penned by standout Gordon Lightfoot, is given a great treatment by Oliver. He captures the folk inflection needed to make the lyrics believable but enhances the rendition with strings in the background.

"Walkin' Down The Line" has Oliver cover Dylan. It isn't only that he attempted the superlative composition but delivers with an emphatic vocal.

Oliver's career wasn't only interpreting the work of others. He wrote songs as well and you can experience those on the Greatest Hits.

With remastered sound and a chance to enjoy "Good Morning Starshine" without clicks and pops why don't we all purchase this before the early morning rain falls.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

3 out of 5 stars Oliver - 'Good Morning Starshine:The Best Of Oliver' (Taragon) 3 1/2 stars.......2007-01-23

I barely remember much about this 'vocal pop' artist. Born as William Oliver Swafford, 1945-2000. He passed on from cancer at the age of 54. This is a twelve track collection of his better material. Looks like he had three albums put out. What I do recall is his 1970 hit "Good Morning,Starshine". Other tunes on this CD worth mentioning are "Sunday Morning", "I Can Remember", his Gordon Lightfoot song "Early Morning Rain" and Dylan's cover of "Walkin' Down The Line". A nice easy listening pick.

5 out of 5 stars Mormon Tabernacle Choir never showed up.......2006-12-21

I saw Oliver once in a small venue and forget that serious image of a guy named Oliver singing Jean. His real name was Bill Swofford and Bill was a really funny guy. Everyone in the audience really enjoyed his performance and there was just something about his delivery. And he had a very good voice. I remember a local radio DJ making an on air comment about how much he enjoyed seeing Oliver in concert as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Oliver's career.......2006-05-11

William Oliver Swofford had a short but infectious hit-making career, which has had an impact on society even recently, as Good Morning Starshine continues to be used in various marketing ads.

His three top 40 hits, Good Morning Starshine, Jean and Sunday Mornin' are here, along with a spattering of other singles (including some that he recorded for United Artists), and some rareties (including a song he recorded with Lesley Gore under the artist name Billy and Sue).

The sound quality is top notch, as should be expected with any Taragon label release, and Sunday Mornin' (released on cd for the first time, i believe) is presented here in a brand new first time stereo mix. I think that Taragon could've thrown on a few more tracks and included some of Oliver's B-sides, but to get his 3 hits in one place, in superb sound (the other two top 40 hits have never sounded better), makes the cd worth getting anyhow. You can't miss with this one.

5 out of 5 stars much underrated.......2005-11-20

great collection of his short career, but the original sole three albums deserve to be reissued- that would be the real tribute to Oliver.

Excellent CD. By far, the best song is "My Little Angel". Most of the others are great too.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Song Collection.......2007-03-01

I have enjoyed the music of The Four Lads for most of my life. I think that this is one of the finest music collections on cd that I have ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars Moments to Remember: Very Best of the Four Lads.......2007-01-29

Great old songs by a great old group

5 out of 5 stars One of my childhood favorites.......2007-01-10

My parents had an album of greatest hits by the 4 lads and I played it over and over again. When the group came to our local county fair a few years ago, I made plans to see them in person. Their harmony is wonderful and many of their songs are so upbeat that you just smile and smile as you listen to them. And this CD not only has all of the old songs I remember from my childhood but a bunch of others too. Great fun!!

5 out of 5 stars THE definitive Four Lads collection.......2006-09-07

Every hit song that the Four Lads made (except for a few that were really the Four Lads and someone else, like "Cleo and Me-O" with Jill Corey or "Cry" with Johnnie Ray) is included in this collection, including BOTH versions of "The Mocking Bird" (yes, two different versions charted, several years apart!)

It includes their biggest hits and some less-popular songs (like "There's Only One of You," my personal Four Lads favorite).

If you like the sound of this group, this CD is a must-buy. None of the other "best of..." collections compares to this one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST OF VAUGHN MONROE.......2007-02-15

This is a must buy compilation re-issued on CD of some of the very best hits by Vaughn Monroe & His Big Band. My favorite on this compilation is "They Were Doing the Mambo" in which Monroe captures the rhythm and spirit of the true "Mambo King" or "El Rey del Mambo", Perez Prado. Monroe also goes latin on the beautifully played and sung bolero "Ballerina". The only "cream of the crop" songs missing from this wonderful compilation are his hits, "Rum and Coca Cola" and "Donkey Serenade" but these 1940's recorded hit songs by Monroe are available on other compilations. Vaughn Monroe's deep and melodious voice with great feeling, along with his band was the perfect, combination, which gained him a preferential spot with big band era fans and made him my favorite of all big bands or yesteryear.

4 out of 5 stars Memories.......2005-08-03

This CD brought back memories of my father who often told me how he listened to Vaughn Monroe during WWII. When I listen, I can somehow imagine my father enjoying some brief moments while the war went on around him. Very enjoyable and nostalgic but not maudlin.

4 out of 5 stars "Okay" mixed with "Wonderful".......2004-10-16

There are no bad songs on this album, but they range from "Okay" to "Wonderful". This could be said of any greatest hits almbum, with people differing on which are which.

The stand-outs, for me, on this album are:

When the Lights Go on Again (All over the World) - Just plain good and nioce, easy to listen to.

There! I've Said It Again - Long before Britney, this song was better.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! - This has been done by many singers, but this is a very nice rendition.

Red Roses for a Blue Lady - I prefer Bobby Vinton's version, but this once is very close.

Riders in the Sky - This song is eerily beautiful, and never fails to get me to stop and listen. Musical magic.

That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day) - Do songs get more Summertime, more content than this?

They Call the Wind Maria - Another work of musical magic, that can be enjoyed repeatedly.

A good album, with a mix of quality songs, including two pieces of wonder: "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" and "They Call the Wind Maria".

1 out of 5 stars A Great Vocalist; A Lousy Recording.......2004-06-25

My fellow reviewers have one of two things happening: (1) they received different discs than I, or (2) they have been smoking some very serious stuff. The average review is five stars? I can give it only one which is a major disappointment! Why? Although the title of the CD is accurate, the quality of the disk is perfectly terrible. A number of tracks reproduce horribly and No. 2 (There I Go) is particularly bad. One wonders why the folks that make thse recordings can't take the time to make certain that the customer gets a decent recording for his or her money. If original master recordings need to be cleaned up in order to give the listener a fair shake then this needs to be done. This is a perfectly wonderful assortment of Vaughn Monroe's recordings. It is a perfectly terrible recording of them.

4 out of 5 stars great music.......2000-04-22

my father had a album with music of the 40's and one song on that record was Ballerina by Vaughn Monroe. since that time i was looking for this artist, only you won't find that much Monroe in the Netherlands. finally, i found it here and today i am a very happy man. great orchestra, great and somewhat strange voice, and great songs. If you love music from this time, you'le love Vaunghn Monroe. love,

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Ames Brothers.......2007-01-29

Great old songs by a great old group

5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2006-11-13

A fantastic collection of their RCA sides which is marred only by the non-appearance of 'Stay', their 1958 charter. How they could include 'Destination Moon' (an LP only track for RCA) in preference to 'Stay' is beyond me. Great sound on all tracks and quite a few in stereo for the first time. A couple of the other reviewers who complain about the non-appearance of tracks such as 'Rag Mop', 'Undecided' etc are way off course. This is a compilation of their RCA releases, not their earlier Coral material which is available elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Review = VB of the Ames Bros CD.......2006-07-26

Fantastic CD. Great sound. Better than the original recordings. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars harmony par eceellence.......2006-07-01

The Ames Bros certainly haver to be the best all male group of the 50s and 60s. Their voices blend extremely well together and they also have incredible arrangements for their songs. Nostalgia that makes you feel great.

5 out of 5 stars Half of a perfect compilation.......2006-03-21

All the 50's RCA hits by one of the smoothest quartets ever. The Ames Brothers were as harmonious as they come on everything from novelty tunes to love songs. All you need is the equally enjoyable CD containing the group's 40's hits for Coral to have the perfect Ames Brothers compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Sound.......2007-08-03

This group was unusually large for its time, and while it was another minor player among the many British entertainers to invade North America's shores in the Sixties, it can lay claim to one feat usually denied most U.K. groups: their first N.American hit, Baby Now That I've Found You, crossed over into the R&B charts! Not even The Beatles could manage that.

Peaking at # 11 Billboard Hot 100 in February 1968 on the Uni label (they recorded for Pye in the U.K.), it also made it to # 33 R&B, b/w Come On Back To Me.

Consisting of vocalist Clem Curtis, Anthony Gomez on keyboards, Eric Allandale on trombone, saxophonists Pat Burke and Mike Elliot, guitarist Alan Warner, drummer Tim Harris, and bassist Peter Macbeth, the group scored again in March that year with Back On My Feet Again which topped out at # 59 Hot 100 b/w I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving, also a # 22 Hot 100 that year for Herman's Hermits.

February 1969 saw their biggest hit, Build Me Up Buttercup, rise to # 3 b/w New Direction, but after that it was like they fell off a cliff. When Elliott and Curtis left the group, and Colin Young climbed on board, In The Bad Bad Old Days (Before You Loved Me) could only manage a # 51 Hot 100 in May 1969 b/w Give Me Love, followed by My Little Chickadee which barely made the charts, settling in at # 99 Hot 100 in July b/w Soloman Grundy.

In 1970 the group split up, although a new Foundations [with a completely different cast] was formed a bit later, but with no further chart success either in the U.K. or North America.

A nice even representative sound of the late 60's pop boom well worth a spot in your collection.

I love The Foundations who made a lot of great music in the sixties. Of course everyone has heard "Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup", but they had so many great songs. I had a ten inch compilation from the early'80's with about ten songs, all of which are on this disc. They would've fit in very well with a lot of the Motown groups, although they were a multi-racial English band. I mistakenly gave this recording one star when I intended five.

5 out of 5 stars A couple of pop classics.......2005-03-14

So many singers and groups are remembered for just one song. The Foundations, whose music was at the R+B end of the pop spectrum, fared slightly better as they had two major international hits.

Baby now that I've found you, their debut single, topped the British chart in November 1967 and just failed to make the American top ten. It has a really bouncy tune that hides the sadness of the lyrics. In the mid-nineties, Alison Krauss gave the song a completely different interpretation, slowing the song right down. Both versions are highly enjoyable in their different ways.

Build me up buttercup, another upbeat tune but this time with upbeat lyrics, peaked at number two in Britain but topped the American charts. This song was originally intended for the Paper Dolls, but a mix-up meant that they did not turn up to record it at the scheduled time, so the song was given to the Foundations instead.

The Foundations had a few other hits. In the bad bad old days was a top ten UK hit, while Back on my feet again made the UK top twenty. Two other songs, Any old time and Born to live born to die, were minor UK hits while My little chickadee was a minor American hit.

The rest of this CD contains many other excellent songs although it omits all the obvious cover versions that are often featured on Foundations compilations. Unless you want those covers, you find all the Foundations tracks that you need here.

5 out of 5 stars FOUNDATIONS ARE MUCH MORE THAN A TWO HIT WONDER.......2002-04-12

...I always knew their two big hits, Baby Now that I've Found You and Build Me Up Buttercup from the radio and I decided to take the plunge into the group's other music. What I discovered is that though the hits are good, they are not the best songs on this realy good cd. In the Bad Bad Old Days, Born to Live Born to Die, Baby I Couln't See, Take A Girl Like You, My Little Chicadee, Something For My Baby and especialy the ridiculously catchy Stoney Ground are all more than enough to convince any listener that this group is wildly underated. A must have sixties classic.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best Of The Foundations Review -error correction.......2002-04-02

Agree that the collection is a good representation of The Foundations but it is misleading. First of all because Colin Young, previously known as the lead singer of 'Joey Young and the Tonicks'in 1965-66,replaced Clem Curtis in The Foundations in 1968. Secondly, because their greatest hit, Build Me Up Buttercup, featured Colin Young as the lead singer, not Clem Curtis so to write that the group 'fell off a cliff'when Clem Curtis was replaced by Colin Young does not make sense!!

4 out of 5 stars The Title Is A Bit Misleading.......2007-07-30

This compilation, while including a few of her own Pop hit singles, is intended more to demonstrate her ability to put over a pure pop sound by allowing her free rein on some huge standards such as Peggy March's I Will Follow Him, Little Eva's Keep Your Hands Off My Baby, and The Shangri-Las' Remember (Walking In The Sand), among others.

In that respect Taragon's choice of title may be a bit misleading to the many Skeeter Davis fans who have been waiting patiently for her definitive Pop hits collection.

Not counting 1953's I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, which reached # 18 Pop and # 1 Country (for EIGHT weeks) as by The Davis Sisters [Mary Frances Penick, aka Skeeter Davis, and her friend Betty Jack Davis, who was killed in a car crash before the record charted], she had 41 Country hit singles between 1958 and 1976, 8 of which crossed over to the Pop charts, 6 to the Adult Contemporary [AC] charts, and one to the R&B charts.

Here you get four of her Billboard Hot 100 hit singles, with the best easily being The End Of The World, a monster hit that made it to # 1 AC, # 2 Hot 100 and Country, and # 4 R&B in 1963 (not many can make that claim). That same year I'm Saving My Love reached # 9 Country, # 13 AC, and # 41 Hot 100, while I Can't Stay Mad At You peaked at # 2 AC, # 7 Hot 100, and # 14 Country. The other hit included here was a 1964 cover of the 1952 Teresa Brewer hit, Gonna Get Along Without You Now, which topped out at # 8 Country, # 15 AC, and # 48 Hot 100.

The missing hits are: (I Can't Help You) I'm Falling Too, which was her 1960 "answer" song to Hank Locklin's Please Help Me I'm Falling and which reached # 2 Country/# 39 Hot 100; My Last Date (With You) - her vocal version of the Floyd Cramer instrumental which made it to # 5 Country/# 26 Hot 100 early in 1961; and the double-side 1964 hit He Says The Same Things To Me (# 15 AC, # 17 Country, and # 47 Hot 100] b/w How Much Can A Lonely Heart Stand [# 92 Hot 100].

Although she will always be associated more with her Country side, Skeeter had that rare ability to attract audiences from right across the spectrum, given the right material, as you will readily discover from this album.

It would be nice, however, to finally see a definitive collection of her 8 Pop hits plus the remaining seven B-sides [No Never, Someone I'd Like To Forget, Somebody Loves You, Somebody Else On Your Mind, It Was Only A Heart, and Now You're Gone] which are impossible to find in CD format.

5 out of 5 stars Skeeter Davis Pop Hits.......2006-07-12

We love this CD. My husband and I are great fans of Skeeter. Great songs sung in Skeeter style. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing but Greatness.......2005-10-22

Skeeter could always hold her own with the pop crowd, and this nicely-packed 24 track CD proves it.

Of course you know "The End of The World" & "I Can't Stay Mad At You", and you maybe even remember Skeeter's cover of "Gonna Get Along Without You Now". These are the only the beginning.

The disc contains some of the best musical collisions of all time. When you slam the "Brill Building" sound into the "Nashville Sound", you get something really special. (No less than 5 of these tracks are honest-to-goodness Goffin/King tunes!)

This CD covers the years of 1963 through 1967. The CD runs the gammut from the cheery teenage pop of "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" (originally done by Little Eva) to '67's fantasticly mature-yet-breezy "What Does It Take (To Keep A Man Like You Satisfied), which was a Top 10 country hit that managed to bubble under the top 100 at #121.

THE CD also contains some first time stereo mixes of some of Skeeter's lost singles, including "Don't Anybody Need My Love". Originally a B-side, it's a song which I consider to probably be THE greatest 60's non-hit that there ever was. It's blatently obvious that Skeeter and producer Chet Atkins modeled the tune after "Home OF The Brave" by Bonnie & The Treasures, a Phil Spector associated tune. They even went so far as to copy the main hook from the song. However, IMHO they did Uncle Phil one better. The song just wails. It's as if they disassembled the Wall Of Sound and had it rebuilt right on Nashville's Music Row. Sonicly and musically, it's just perfect. Out of all the tracks presented here, it's the one which has the most timeless sound.

Other stellar tracks are the 6 cuts from the "Singin' In The Summer Sun" LP that are included here, including the mellow-and-wispy "Summer Sunshine", and a GREAT cover of Chad & Jeremy's "A Summer Song".

I've used enough adjectives to describe this one. You have to hear for yourself!

4 out of 5 stars Huge compilation of a underrated singer worth cherishing.......2005-06-09

Skeeter Davis's pithy, ne'er-do-well vocals enhance just about any song given to her, and that includes a lot of cover tunes since Davis wasn't primarily a songwriter. The fact that she makes the songs her own says a lot about her vocalizing style, which when put to a sad song about lost love comes out warmly melancholy(never bitter). "Essential Skeeter Davis" is probably the better buy, yet this one does have "Sun Glasses", "What Am I Going To Do With You(Hey Baby)" and "Don't Let Me Stand in Your Way"--rare singles that are wonderful to have on disc.

5 out of 5 stars Skeeter's versions of pop classics.......2005-01-13

Skeeter is best remembered for End of the world, an extremely sad song that almost topped the pop charts in America and also made number eighteen in Britain, where a cover by Sonia also peaked at eighteen over twenty years later. This track appears on just about every compilation of Skeeter's music, so it is the other tracks that are the main interest here. The compiler has included a few of Skeeter's own hits but has mainly focused on her covers of songs that were successful for others in the American pop charts.

Silver threads and golden needles was original recorded by Wanda Jackson, but became a top twenty hit for British folk-pop group the Springfields, who recorded it after hearing Skeeter's version. I will follow him was originally a French instrumental. With vocals added and titled Chariot, it became a million-seller for Petula Clark in France. She recorded the English version (I will follow him), but it was Little Peggy March who had the big hit, topping the American charts and also charting in Britain. Petula's version topped the chart in Singapore. Gonna get along without ya now was an American hit for Teresa Brewer, but was later covered by Patience and Prudence who also had a hit with it. Viola Wills had a UK hit with it in the seventies.

Other notable covers here include Keep your hands off my baby (Little Eva), Sunglasses (Sandy Posey - a UK hit for Tracey Ullman in the eighties), Under the boardwalk (Drifters) and Remember walking in the sand (Shangri-Las).

This is a fascinating collection that demonstrates Skeeter's versatility, but if you're looking for Skeeter's own hits, Essential Skeeter Davis is the strongest collection of those.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Much Better.......2001-01-06

Easy listening/dance music doesn't get much better than Bert Kaempfert. Kaempfert possesses one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds of the last fifty years! Taragon's release of his product is to be applauded; the remastering is superb! The tunes---ah, there isn't a bad one on here! The use of Bert's signature trumpet; the omnipresent bass riffs; the impeccable percussion; smooth strings; and that enchanting female voice, this is what makes Bert Kaempfert one of the Best!

5 out of 5 stars Two amazing LPs on one CD.......2000-05-25

Taragon is doing a great job of reissuing Kaempfert product. This particular disc to me, is the cream of the crop. These two LPs showcase the Kaempfert orchestra at the top of their game. The first disc is an amazing collection of latin standards (and a couple of originals!) and the second disc is one of his most beloved albums and all time best sellers. Together on one CD, they make for quite an enticing package. Besides the Kaempfert classics (Blue Midnight, L-O-V-E, Red Roses for a Blue Lady and Three O'clock in the Morning) there are many outstanding yet lesser known gems in the Kaempfert catalog. Bert's incredible arrangements of Besame Mucho and The Breeze and I sound as exhilarating today as they did over thirty years ago. Other highlights of the Latin album are Cha Cha Brasilia, Chicken Talk, and Bert's Bossa Nova (samples of which have been turning up on hip hop records and in television commercials lately.) You may want to start your Kaempfert collection with Taragon's excellent 16 track Best Of compilation, but this is an indespensible companion to that disc as many of Bert Kaempfert's best recordings are not always his best known.

I knew you when is the best "breake up" song ever wrote. Tom.

5 out of 5 stars Best collection so far.......2003-03-15

After several years of failed attempts, Billy Joe Royal's unique sound coupled with the songwriting talents of Joe South blasted into the top ten with his signature song, "Down In The Boondocks". While that tune remained his biggest hit, he had several other respectably selling tunes including the follow up to "Down....", the plaintive and underappreciated "I Knew You When". Royal continued to have minor chart success through the later 60's until after parting ways with South, he hit big again in '69 with the quirky "Cherry Hill Park". Staying power eluded him though and it wasn't until 1978 that his revival of the Drifters' "Under The Boardwalk" put him back on the charts, if only briefly, partly due to the fact that his new label folded shortly after "Boardwalk...." started gaining sales momentum. Several more label changes later, Royal finally found a new home in the country music arena and had chart success there but was never again to be seen on the pop charts. This new greatest hits collection from Taragon Records gathers up all his Columbia hits and does it far better than any of the often sonically mediocre compilations that have heretofore appeared. Filling out the generous 23 track count are bubbling under and failed singles along with a few album cuts. The ten-page flopover liner notes booklet provides a musical history, pics and track details to finish up the piece. While including Royal's single non-Columbia hit "Under The Boardwalk" would have made this a more comprehensive collection, for its purpose of anthologizing his Columbia years, it is done in fine style. For anyone seeking Royal's signature pop sides, forget all the rest as this is the best quality choice, bar none.
