4 out of 5 stars Another new boney m release.......2007-04-29

Although the songs from Boney M have been released many and many times over on compilation cd's, this is actually the second time that this album is going to be released on cd. As a fan and collector I was hoping that this release would bring some rareties that were still not released on cd before. Partly that's what we get.

The tracklisting:
Nightflight To Venus 4:47
Rasputin 5:52
Painter Man 3:11
He Was A Steppenwolf 6:52
King Of The Road 2:37
Rivers Of Babylon 4:21
Voodoo Night 3:31
Brown Girl In The Ring 4:02
Never Change Lovers In The Middle Of The Night 5:33
Heart Of Gold 4:05
Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord (Bonus track) 5:49
Dancing In The Streets (Bonus track) 3:59

On vinyl this album has been released 4 times around with different running running times of zeveral songs. For example, the first vinyl release contained a 7 minute version of nightflight to venus and a 6:39 minute version of rasputin, while on the second vinyl release the nightflight track ran 5:55 and on the third it lasted only 4:58 and the 4th and shortest only 4:45. And unfortunately, this short 4:45 minute version is the one used on this cd. Can you inmagine how I (colletor and fan) hoped that finally that long version became available. Hence my dissapointmend. Also the second track, rasputin is the 5:52 minute version and not the first vinyl (6:39) or second vinyl (6:03) version, but again the fourth vinyl short version.

Other omissions for me, the 12" version of rivers of babylon (yes, there is a officially released vinyl promo-only 12inch that runs 7:22, released in 1978 so no later done re-mix). Also missing the 12inch for dancing in the streets (6:18, never released on cd), and why not included the 12inch for mary's boy child (6:18) which is unavailable on cd instead of this more common 5:49 version. Also am I missing the 12inch for rasputin (7:33). The cd now only plays for 54 minutes, so why not filled her up till 79min with these missing tracks. Would have made this re-release much mor worthwile.

5 out of 5 stars All Contemporary Blues Albums Must Be Measured Against This.......2002-05-22

Sure, they're all downhearted and they've all had hard luck & trouble. But given half a chance, they'd raise up off the ground and pop you one in the mouth. Not Fenton. There's a gentleness and resignation to him unlike any other blues artist I know. The man is defeated. Lucky for us, we get to hear him play & sing about it. One of my profound regrets is that I never got to see him perform. Rest in peace, Brother Robinson.

5 out of 5 stars another great bluesman.......2000-09-10

fenton is another great bluesman who's music end life had its ups and downs. fenton played some great chicago blues and on this cd it continues in grand style. if you like the sound of floyd macdaniel or even dave specter you will love fenton. two great songs are my favorites "sinners prayer" and "nightflight" rip fenton

4 out of 5 stars Sinner's prayer indeed..........2000-02-24

Passionate and unique,Fenton's combination of blues and jazz shuffles, commuting easily from traditional blues to improvisation and fusion leaves all competition in the dust.A great vocalist as well,Fenton added fuel to the fire by inviting Junior Wells aboard, while the horn section featured on a number of tracks simply does no wrong.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have item........2007-02-24

If you are a Boney M fan or just a music lover this is a must have CD just for one reason: This is the ONLY Boney M CD where Rasputin follows Night Flight To Venus which is the correct sequence (because the end of NFTV is the beginning of Rasputin). There are other reasons though: the tracks in this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Boney M : NIGHT FLIGHT TO VENUS.......2006-04-21

When this was first released in Europe and especially in the United Kingdom, it is believed that a lot of the music shops, almost were out of the copies that they had within the week. But then came the release of the single, "Rivers of Babylon," and it went straight to number one in the United Kingdom charts and remained there for five consecutive weeks. In the discos, "Night Flight To Venus" and "Rasputin" could be heard being played. People who were not Boney M fans, began to purchase the album and the single.

Today, after twenty odd years, Boney M is still remembered and especially the album, "NIGHT FLIGHT TO VENUS."

The album is absolutely brilliant and is worthwhile listening to it just once to get to know what it really is like.

5 out of 5 stars The classic album.......2005-03-30

This album was popular all over Europe and remains one of the finest disco albums ever recorded. It included four tracks that, released as singles, became huge UK hits for them - and the other tracks were also of a high quality. The title track (included here) was not released as a UK single but must surely have been considered for such a release.

The first single off the album was Rivers of Babylon, a cover of a reggae song from the sixties that was originally recorded by the Melodians. It spent five weeks at number one in the UK before beginning a slow decline. Just when it looked as if it was near to dropping out of the charts (over three months after its original release), the record was flipped and its B-side, Brown girl in the ring, was heavily promoted. The record climbed the charts again and eventually re-entered the top five. By the time the record finally dropped out of the UK chart, it had been there for forty weeks.

While the above double-sided single was still in the charts, Boney M released Rasputin, which made number two in the UK. Following a Christmas single not taken from the album, they returned to this album for one more single, Painter man, which only just made the top ten. Being released more than a year after the album from which it came, I suspect that a lot of people already had the album by then.

The other tracks include unlikely but brilliant covers of King of the road (Roger Miller) and Heart of gold (Neil Young) as well as three original songs of which my favorite is Never change lovers in the middle of the night.

The hits are, of course, available elsewhere, but this fine album is worth hearing in its entirety - if you can find it.

3 out of 5 stars Yes... Poor Sound Quality!!!.......2004-04-14

I agree with the Mexican fan, who wrote a review below. I had bought this CD at Amazon as soon as I found it but was disappointed by its poor sound quality. No deep bass, unbalanced channel separation, etc. Luckily, I had a chance to get an original Hansa German LP a few months ago. You know what? The sound is so very much better than the CD. Actually, just perfect (also with the inner post cards and double jacket). So... I sold the CD and am enjoying the LP a lot. If you have a record player, I would recommend you to follow my example.:-)

3 out of 5 stars Different styles from the Eurodisco champs.......2002-10-04

This varied album was released following their huge success with their biggest hit ever (Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl in the Ring) and also contains the follow-up Rasputin, which was another chart hit and dancefloor filler. It is an album of prime Eurodisco but unfortunately the rest of the tracks do not quite live up to the promise of their other albums like Love For Sale. The title track starts with a vocoder-voice counting down to a launch into a sizzling piece of synth-pop and girlie vocals. Painter Man is a nice sing-along while King Of The Road and Heart Of Gold are passable interpretations of these classic songs. Voodoonight, Steppenwolf and Never Change Lovers are just fillers. I recommend their Greatest Hits album because it contains all their best work, including the best tracks from this album.

    5 out of 5 stars IMAGINATIVE FLIGHT.......2007-03-24

"Hey Baz, you've been known to string a few words together, you could review it if you like...., it's in the post." I must admit that I was a little ambivalent about the prospect - I hadn't heard Tony play for some time and what if I didn't think the CD did him justice, for whatever reason eg choice of tunes, production, arrangements, quality of sound, quality of instruments, technological gremlins heard as low flying flatulence etc etc

He informed me that an Abba track was included, followed by "If I Were A Richman" and coming from my roots preference perspective (as exemplified by my roots programme Mystery Train on Valley FM, Canberra), I was somewhat apprehensive. I needn't have worried.

This CD is quite honestly well worth the admission fee. Notes? Flyin' everywhere, and all in order. Blood oath. Styles? He mixes more styles than you can poke a stick at, and then some. ...I seriously started thinking of him as Anthony after I'd heard it. It's like our sister going for the doctorship - mate, we used to call her Coll and tell her jokes, like the one about men finding women in leather underwear attractive because the aroma remind them of a new ute.....now we send them to the Doctor by e-mail, same joke but....

Times change and people do without you realising it, become more skilful, sensitive, start investigating themselves, and others, a whole new world inside, with it's own splendour, depth and surprises. People can shock you. One minute they're Tony, next they're Anthony, or Doc. Same face, somehow different bloke....different perspective, a shift to the left, a two step was once a stroll, now a shift to the right and Blind Willie shimmies to shades of Django, a dash of Segovia, was slack string open and loose, now tight pointed, defined, with a grin on the gee-tar and an incisive quirk in the observation.

Yeah, there's humour here, check out the "Silly Season", "Oh Dear" or the bridge between "Money, Money Money and "If I Were A Richman". Tony's wry humour with the spontaneous laughter beneath, a sort of contradiction in himself really, self depreciatory yet musically snobbish, self contained yet vulnerable, a well honed appreciation of the ridiculous and random, yet yearning for order and control. Life's a bugger, but it's bloody well there and you've got to deal with it. Has it's moments but......yeah, and just when you think you've got it sussed, it'll turn around and bite you on the bum.

His personality imprints the music where similar discs of this genre can be clinical, albeit well executed. This also is well executed, but there is space for quirk of personality, the character of musical instrument and not forgetting the listener's involvement. It's not all perfect but it has soul and grit and thankfully it`s not too polished. The overall sound has an organic feel, with a warmth and snap. The possibilities of Jim William's excellent instruments are realised.

The use of dynamics is good, and within the minimalist instrumentation, has attack and subtlety. His control manifests in the use of medium, which is kept to acoustic guitar, mandolin and double bass (played on 3 tracks by Peter Kohlhoff). Like a painter sticking with water colours to keep his artistic vision uncluttered, clear. It is pure, honest, working man's tools for this man from the Gong.

"Separate Ways" threw me. It has soul. Bares the soul in fact. Not merely clever playing to display skill, rather a personal statement with it's tenderness, doubt, longing and resignation. Most musicians wouldn't risk this exposure first up.

The three self penned long pieces are also risky, "Ship In the Storm" "Nightflight" and "Going Home". The listener may not see what the composer intends. On the other hand the imagination of the listener may provide more. What is a canvass painted white? It may mean nothing whatsoever to some; to others - nirvana, or the snow which covers a Crimean battlefield, or the white of an eye. Some of Bob Dylan's throwaway lines have been interpreted to His Bobness's advantage, no doubt. Critic Griel Marcus recently wrote a book on "Like A Rolling Stone". Hendrix's "scuse me while I kiss the sky" was interpreted as "scuse me while I kiss this guy", much to Hendrix's amusement who subsequently sang it the second way, for fun.

Regardless, the music itself provides ample interest in it's movement, light and shade, percussion, and soundscape. A musical canvas for the listener's imagination. Loved the shifting plectrum percussive effects in "Ship In the Storm". "Nightflight" is a rhythmic dervish with elements of Irish, Middle Eastern and Led Zeporama - lovely production too from Robbie Specognia, adding depth and colouration. "Going Home" was a stunner for me, so evocative, standing in the hallway, recollections....we must have shared the same home.

Do yourself a favour and buy this gem. Keep the lad alive and composing.

Mr. Magic's Nightflight is created by "Norman", a well known German DJ whose main credentials included producing intelligent techno for the "Music Research" label in Germany. This CD takes a more hyperspace approach, while still retaining a lot of rhythmic charm. It opens with "The Wildlife" a slow strange ambient tance with acidity that paradoxically has the qualities of velvet. But hold onto your reciept, this is not an ambient project. What a wonderful beginning to an otherwise hard edged dance album. It closes with "The Last Flight", a sophomoric space dreamscape that wanders aimlessly for 13 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars I'll fly Nightflight at any time of the day!.......2003-06-08

The second to last album from these squawky Welsh birds, finds them in a different mood than on Power Supply. Fewer AC/DCish chords, and better song ideas overall makes it an improvement over it's predecessor (personally, Power Supply has always been my least favorite Budgie album) Lots of huge heavy drums courtesy of Steve williams even though most of the tracks are "lighter" and the heavy ones I find the most dissapointing. Superstar is mere filler, She Used Me up almost hits the mark. The ballad Apparatus gave them a minor hit in the U.K. (one of VERY VERY few!) and opener I Turned To Stone uses a great light-heavy-light-heavy mid paced song structure with a galloping guitar solo laden outro, and is one of my favorite tracks from the 80's era of Budgie. I tip my hat to these batty birds, I can't imagine ever getting really SICK of their music, and I don't blame them for giving up when they did. Things change, music changes, and Budgie just didn't fit the mold of pop music at the time, nor did they ever. Listen, learn, and buy all their damn albums if you don't have them already!
