Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Legend is still the crème de la crème, the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc. He was unique, and the message of this record, more than any other, is that he died far too soon. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for any music collection.......2007-07-11
I will never grow tired of "Legend." This compilation is absolutely perfect, providing an accurate insight into the musical genius that was Bob Marley. This isn't just reggae at its finest, but it's music at its finest. The songs on "Legend" can be inspiring, uplifting, entertaining, thought-provoking, but most of all just purely enjoyable. The simple songwriting and talented musicianship provide a sunny, lighthearted musical setting, the laidback Caribbean style that would inspire a generation of reggae followers. But it's Bob's messages and lyrics that set him apart from the other great Jamaican musicians who were his contemporaries. Bob's music is at times politically and religiously charged, and sometimes just for fun. But everything he advocates in his muic is positive. He wants the world to be a better, friendlier place, and he advocates human treatment and equality, civil rights, and freedom. He portrays his ideas in a simple manner that makes them all the more effective. This compilation covers the most audience-friendly and appealing of his extensive discography. This is a smart purchase, because Bob's discography is huge, especially because there are so many various releases that have surfaced between different distributors in different countries. "Legend" is an album everyone should own, it's the one that every new Bob Marley listener should not even think twice about purchasing, and everyone should be able to appreciate the music here.
The compilation begins with "Is This Love," one of the most purely roots songs here, a lyrically simple, musically catchy tune. "No Woman No Cry" is my favorite song of Bob's music, and this seven minute live recording is beautiful. The lyricism of this song is simple but really moving, from his talk of growing up poor in Jamaica to his philosophies on life, and the break for the guitar solo and background vocals complete the beautiful arrangement. I absolutely love "Could You Be Loved," a clever production that's immediately catchy, with a great chorus and standard Bob Marley performance. "Three Little Birds," one of his most well-known tunes, is fun, light, and fairly uplifting. "Buffalo Soldier" is an ingenious look at the movement of peoples from Africa to the Caribbean, and Bob praises his ancestors. The politically-fueled "Get Up, Stand Up" is a very effective rallying cry for civil rights. Another of my favorites is the winding "Stir It Up," a laidback, enjoyable and fun song. "Easy Skanking" is included as a bonus on the new remaster, a welcome bonus to the classic tracklist. "One Love/People Get Ready" is a happy call to equal treatment and some light philosophy, one of his most definitive songs. If you haven't, you must hear his ingenious cover of Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff," which is followed here by the easy "Waiting in Vain" and the very inspired "Redemption Song." "Satisfy My Soul" and the incredible "Exodus" follow, with another of my favorites, the unforgettable "Jamming." The remaster also includes "Punky Reggae Party" as a bonus, a unique party track.
Bottom line, this album is a must have for anyone. People of all ages and backgrounds can love "Legend," even if they're not a reggae fan. This music is clever, catchy, and fun, and Bob Marley is really a genius. Make this purchase if you haven't already, you will not be disappointed by "Legend."
Reggae's Ruler.......2007-07-09
This CD is an excellent Bob Marley compilation. Probably teh greatest reggae album ever. Here are just the really good tunes:
Is this Love - great opener, an uplifting reggae love song
3 Little Birds - great, soulful, makes heart soar
Buffalo Soldier - phenomenal tune about black soldiers who were sent to fight American Indians. Great story and great music
One Love - awesome tho simple, it's a call to unity
Redemption Song - slow with soft guitar, a stirring call to free your mind and free yourself, resist opression
Jammin- - a fun party tune, no message here but just to jam
Timeless CD.......2007-05-28
What can I say that has not already been said about this awesome cd? Put it on, relax and enjoy life. It never gets old.
Jimmy Buffett was right.......2007-05-13
My only knowledge of Bob Marley was references by Jimmy Buffett in his books. So when I found this CD, I had to get it. I am glad I did. Thoroughly enjoyed every cut.
Album name says it all..........2007-05-08
You don't have to smoke the you-know-what to appreciate the work of Bob Marley. This is good music for anybody, kids included! This is also one of the few best-ofs to live up to it's name. Invest in a positive message - buy this album today:)

Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Switchfoot's best work?.......2007-01-24
Although I haven't listened to Switchfoot's two most recent albulms (Oh! Gravity and Nothing Is Sound) I consider New Way to Be Human their best up through Beautiful Letdown. Learning to Breathe is also great. If you don't have these albulms, by all means you should buy them at this price.
Great addition for the Switchfoot fan.......2006-07-24
In a day where Switchfoot is known for hits such as "Meant to Live", "Dare you to Move", and "Stars", early songs like "Chem 6A", "New Way to be Human", and "Learning to Breath" remain unheard. This 3 cd set is a perfect additon for those who love the music of the San Diego rockers. Although dissapointing compared to their latter albums, there first three give songs that are awesome both musically and lyrically. In my opinion, each cd gets better as the group matures. I don't recommend this collcection for those who just enjoy Switchfoot with their top 20 spotlight songs. But if you enjoyed the Beautiful Letdown and Nothing is Sound, this is a must have.
Wow! 3 CD's for the Price of 1!!!.......2006-03-22
I love Switchfoot. These guys are definitely one of the best comtemporary Christian groups out there. You can't beat having a 3 cd set for such a great price. The set comes with the original cd's (original covers) along with the books that were with the cd's. So you get all the great original songs for a great price. Learning to Breath, New way to be Human - just can't beat these songs. Enjoy!!!!
Switchfoot.......2005-09-08
I love switchfoot....I didn't have the first 3 CDs so it was a perfect buy and at a reasonable cost. Definately recommend.

Switchfoot Lover.......2005-08-29
Loved the Switchfoot triple CD! It was great to see how they've changed from their first CD through their third CD. One thing that didn't change is the great music they produce and can't wait for the new CD to come out in Sept. 2005. They are a great band and sound even better in person - if you ever have the chance to see them in person! This triple CD is a great value for the price.

Will Smith makes a welcome left turn from his recent Hollywood McAction Film past in director Andy Tennant's romantic comedy. He is also the film's executive soundtrack producer, taking the opportunity to pay tribute to the R&B and soul that initially influenced his own musical career, as well as showcase its contemporary echoes. Vintage tracks represent Motown (the Temptations' classic "I Can't Get Next to You") and Philly (The O'Jays "Love Train") soul well, while the Caribbean rhythms of Jimmy Cliff's "You Can Get It," Martha Reeves' "It's Easy to Fall in Love" and Earth, Wind & Fire's pop-inflected "Reasons" testify to the old school's rich diversity. John Legend's new cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" doesn't add much to the original, but other new cuts like the hip-hop/soul fusion of Heavy D and the Boyz' "Now That We Found Love," EW&F's collaboration with Kelly Rowland and Sleepy Brown ("This Is How I Feel") and Amerie's funk-charged "I Thing" offer up a tasty modern R&B groove. --Jerry McCulley

Hitch..........2007-02-15
I'll be honest, I bought this disc for Amerie's "1 thing." I don't know why, but at the time, I had to have it (and even bidded on ebay for a British CD-Single! Thankfully, I lost, as it went for $26US!!) The rest of the disc is "okay." Three stars for the disc. Five stars for Amerie's "1 Thing."
Found the club song.......2006-09-29
Like others, I went looking for the song from the club...I think this is it: Everthing but the girl: Five Fathoms, from the cd Temperamental. This song, gets the 5 stars. Good stuff.
Club Song.......2006-08-30
I am also trying to figure out what song was playing in the club... I thought it was "Everything but the Girl" also or "Sade"... I have had no luck...
need title of song.......2006-08-09
does anyone know the title or artist or both of the song that was playing in the background when wil approached eva in the club? sounds like "everything but the girl" but i'm not sure. the soundtrack doesn't have it...help! thanks
Not the movie.......2006-03-22
I was very disappointed that the songs on this album were not a comprehensive list of the songs that I saw in the movie. It's a compilation of mediocre songs. Big disappointment.

It's nothing new for David and Diane Arkenstone, the core members of New Age quartet Enaid, to be inspired by mythology; the appropriately timed Music Inspired by Middle Earth is proof enough of that. Avalon is another collection in a similar vein, a compendium of instrumental pieces that take their titles from landmark events and concepts within the classic story. This CD is somewhat less driven by narrative, and occasionally, the music appears to refer to nothing in particular. The opening "Road to Camelot," a dance-appropriate piece with a medieval flavor, leads into "Enchantment," which features wordless vocals and a slower, more ethereal mood. While "The Spirit of Excalibur" and "The Round Table" put the listener on firmer ground, this collection has a less universal flair, tending rather toward personal interpretation. In that sense, it's vintage David Arkenstone; not, perhaps, a groundbreaking work, but diverting enough in its own right. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Mystical Tranquility.......2006-12-08
I adore this CD!! The perfect music to decompress on the ride home after a stressful day at work!! I'm giving it to friends as Christmas gifts!
Easy listening for King Arthur junkies.......2006-08-07
"Avalon: A Celtic Legend" is a pleasant, upbeat collection of songs with a distinctly medieval flavor. Composed by David Arkenstone ("Music Inspired by Middle Earth," "The Celtic Book of Days"), each song on this CD depicts a scene from the life of the fabled King Arthur.
The simplicity of the songs makes them good as "background music," but not as suitable for serious listening. They tend to get a little repetitive after a while, so make sure you have something else to occupy your mind while you're listening. (I often play this CD while I'm lifting weights or working on an art project, for instance.)
Overall, this CD is a good investment. Although not as spellbinding as "A Celtic Romance" or "Celtic Mysteries II," "Avalon" is a refreshing recording and a relaxing addition to any Celtic lover's collection.
Great CD!.......2005-02-21
Excellent CD, the more I play it, the more I enjoy it! I wish I had bought it a long time ago.
Very appealing and inspiring!.......2002-12-05
Melodies and instrumentations influenced by the traditional music of the British Isles are rendered with a modern sensibility that is part New Age, part epic soundtrack. These lush, engaging compositions by Diane and David Arkenstone combine acoustic and electronic instruments, as well as occasional vocalise and whispered texts by Diane (whose name spelled backwards creates the pseudonym "Enaid"). This recording could easily be a companion work to the Arkenstones' "Music Inspired by Middle Earth"; it is equally appealing, telling a different story, but with similar textures and techniques. I find both recordings to be quite evocative and inspirational, and if they were old vinyl LPs, I'd have worn the grooves out by now. If you aren't familiar with David and Diane Arkenstones' work, start with these two CDs, and if you're already a fan, you're sure to love these top-notch additions to the repertoire! David's earlier release, "The Celtic Book of Days", also has British Isles theme and is quite enjoyable. Other similarly evocative "soundtracks" to historical and fantasy legends include Mychael and Jeff Danna's "A Celtic Tale: The Legend of Deirdre" and "A Celtic Romance: The Legend of Liadain and Curithir", as well as Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning's "Byzantium: The Book of Kells and St. Aidan's Journey", and "Music of Celtic Legends: The Bard and the Warrior". Buy them all and put them on a multi-CD mixer for hours of compelling journeys through time and mood!
Simply beautiful!.......2002-07-30
The first time I heard this CD was through browsing the New Age section of a Borders bookstore. It is one among others that they have displayed for sample listening. The front cover caught my attention. After listening to the first track, I told myself that this is definately a *must have* CD. The music is simply so beautiful that I stood there and listened to the whole CD. The enchanting music makes you feel as if you are actually there in the time of King Arthur. There are just no other words to describe this. If this CD is not part of your collection, then you are definately missing out!

These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
In November 2000, legendary director Hal Prince hosted 3hree, an evening of three one-act musicals, at his namesake theater in Philadelphia. It says a lot about Prince's clout that a cast album was released a few months later; it says even more about his unflagging taste that the pieces are so good. Laurence O'Keefe and Neil Dunbar Benjamin's "The Mice" is a darkly comic romp about a couple and its mice problems, while Robert Lindsey Nassif's "The Flight of the Lawnchair Man" is whimsical but never cloying. "Lavender Girl" is set in 1927, thus allowing John Bucchino (whose songs have been championed by Patti LuPone) to let loose with a great Charleston ("We've Got Time"). He also shines with the passionate ballads that are quickly becoming his calling card (though "Real Enough to Change My Mind" admittedly teeters on the brink of Disney territory). Overall, the CD is remarkably strong and will be a great pick for those who crave new musical-theater voices but cringe at Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel's lack of melodies. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Cute Three in one!.......2006-07-25
Ok So this is three one acts put into one show. The First "Mice" is ok. Pretty cute idea. The second, I can't remember the name of it, is probably the weakest, just not much substance. But the final one, "The Flight of the Lawnchair man" is really nice and is worth the 10 bucks alone. The Lyrics are quite clever in all the acts, but the music is definitly story telling, no amazing ballads here. My favorite song would have to be "Tiny."
Catchy tunes, good subject matter.......2006-07-20
The Mice
---------
My favorite of the three, this is a story about an affair between an exterminator and the neglected wife of a tailor. The songs are particularly hilarious when dealing with the townfolks, and the music is incredibly bouncy, especially considering the (very dark) subject matter. Valerie Wright's (Virga) delivery in "That's All I Need" is wonderfully light, and John Scherer (Allan) is hilariously accommodating in "Mice!" These are some of the most clever lyrics you will hear, and the rhymes are wonderful. (I'm sorry, but rhyming "cyanide" and "pesticide" with "blushing bride" is just incredibly funny to me.) If you like the music from The Wild Party (LaChuisa), and Thoroughly Modern Millie, you'll probably like this piece as well.
Lavender Girl
---------------
I can't say much about the plot of this one without giving everything away. It's essentially about a very brief love affair. The music is adequate. The only piece that really gets stuck in my head is "We've Got Time." It's a wonderful homage to the '20s ballroom style, with lots of syncopation, swing, and harmonies. Again, we're in Thoroughly Modern Millie territory here. However, the rest of the act just doesn't stand up next to this particular number. Granted, the performances are great, but there just isn't enough material left in the plot to make one care, and it's just one ballad after another. I feel like adding just one more up-tempo song in here might have made this more complete.
Flight of the Lawnchair Man
------------------------------
I didn't realize until Mythbusters happened to do an episode about it, but apparently "Flight of the Lawnchair Man" is based on the true story of Larry Walters (a.k.a. Lawnchair Larry). Searching for him on Wikipedia will turn up the details of this "true urban legend." Despite this being "grounded" in reality, it's an awfully silly plot. The music is incredibly inconsistent, almost like the writer had a bunch of different musical themes lying around and decided to stick them together. We've got everything from Italian tarantella to Broadway-style kick-line. There are some truly awful lyrics in this one (particularly in "Genius" and "To Tame the Sky") such as:
"Once I tried to fly a sofa/Once I tried to fly a school"
and
"I'm the background/I'm like underwear"
Still, this absurdist (but apparently mostly true!) story (about a man who straps 400 helium-filled balloons to a lawn chair) is somehow transcendent, almost like a Shel Silverstein story. Fans of Joss Whedon's Firefly will probably identify with the sentiment of "The Air Is Free." If you liked Maury Yeston's Nine, and you happen to really enjoy numbers like "Hello Please" from Pacific Overtures, you'll probably like this show too. Everyone in the cast gets to shine with some sort of hilarity, and "Never Finish Before You Are Finished" steals the show, and makes up for the terrible lyrics in "Genius." Some sample great lyrics:
"I could have given up and landed inland, in Finland, and had a Finnish finish and been done"
and
"Better to last to the last and be last"
The puns just keep on flying. Get it? Flying? *groan*
Buy it for the Lawnchair Man!.......2003-03-23
Stumbling upon the incredible BATBOY, I discovered this other gem with the only other Laurence O'Keefe musical on disc. Expecting to fall in love with O'Keefe's "The Mice", I found that the brilliance of composer Robert Lindsey Nassif about the story of a man who flies in a lawnchair. With catchy tunes by famous pilots - Amelia Aerhart, Charles Lindbergh - this show is jampacked with gorgeous ballads, funny and catchy upbeat sontgs and that extra bit of love to touch the heart.
It's worth it. Get it.
You cant beat it........2003-01-01
All 3 show segments of this cd are equally fabulous. Beautiful melodies and clever lyrics and stories make this cd a joy to listen to. The cast is wonderful in their character interpretations and all have beautiful voices. I would have loved to see this live. Besides, what other show has a singing Amelia Earhart in it?
The Musical Has a Future.......2002-01-01
Having grown up in New York in the '70's, I have since felt that the musical has not gone anywhere since the groundbreaking days of "Company" and "Follies" and subsequent Sondheim milestones. Nothing really exciting and new happened for years. Having just finished hearing "3hree" for the first time I must say that I am very optimistic about the future of the musical. Although I found Adam Guettel's "Myths and Hymns" awe-inspiring and Jason Robert Brown's "Songs for a New Word" exhiliratingly beautiful, neither of those shows had stories, and the same composers attempts at book musicals seemed less wonderful to me. "3hree" is made up of three genuine book musicals that are moving, exciting, original and intelligent. The songs tell stories that touch you and make you think. I am very excited about this CD and am looking forward to hearing it again and again. Each of the three musicals far surpasses "The Producers", which to judge by the CD, seems very familiar and unexciting. If you love musical theater definitely buy this! Hearing it has left me much encouraged at the prospective of the future of the musical. Between Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, the writers of "Urinetown" and the writers of "3hree", I think we have a lot to look forward to in the next decade. There very well may be a renaissance of the musical. Stephen Sondhein, you are no longer alone.

Customer Reviews:
A neglected cantata by Sir Arthur Sullivan........2003-02-10
Digital recording processes, efficient marketing, and above all the work of conductor Ronald Corp in bringing back to life late nineteenth and early twentieth century music that has lain moribund and neglected, allow music lovers like me a first opportunity to hear Sir Arthur Sullivan's "The Golden Legend".
I have listened six times to this recording. Each time I find new details or effects in the music that reinforce my admiration for Sir Arthur Sullivan. A quick perusal of the Longfellow poem on which the work is based and a look at the synopsis provided with the recording have been enough to show that its Faust-like story would have been familiar, meaningful and fascinating enough to justify this work's enormous popularity in Sullivan's time. Nowadays, at least to me, it seems preposterous
Nevertheless the music repays close attention. Within the bounds of decorum that Sullivan always preserved in his music, there is a wonderful range of inventiveness, harmonic progression and melody. The forces include five soloists, chorus, orchestra and organ.
Timed to provide a satisfying evening's music making in the 1880s, the music runs for just over 90 minutes. Hyperion have marketed the two CD set for the price of one.
The recording venue was a church in south London that I used to attend many years ago. Rarely have I heard choral singing so well caught on record. The soloists have fresh young voices. If veteran record collectors have a hazy recollection of having sampled this work before, it might derive from a stunning recording of an excerpt called "The night is calm" made by the Australian soprano Florence Austral.
A complete Golden Legend at last!.......2003-01-16
Elgar admired The Golden Legend. Indeed, it is hard to imagine The Dream of Gerontius taking shape without Sullivan's trail blazing experiments in emotional intensity and orchestral brilliance. Sullivan diverges markedly from his "English Musical Renaissance" contemporaries (Parry and Stamford) by following the Wagnerian rather than the Brahmsian path. For example, he uses the voices as extensions of the orchestra. Unfortunately, this is where the current recording is less than ideal. At times, the recording engineers give too much prominence to the vocalists at the expense of the orchestra. The brilliant brass passages on the road to Salerno and the fine trombone writing at the end of the fugue in the Epilogue are too much in the background. Fortunately, the orchestra is clearly heard in "It is the sea."
Of the soloists, Janice Watson is a radiant Elsie. In her aria, "The Night is calm" she almost equals Florence Austral's legendary 1926 performance (conducted by the young John Barbirolli). With the benefit of clear digital sound, Watson's performance is thrilling. Jean Rigby as Ursula is best in her duet with Watson. When she dreads the prospect of standing at her daughter's grave, dark clouds gather in the horns: a haunting passage that long lingers the in the listener's memory. In her two solo arias, I found her singing more restrained.
Mark Wilde is an excellent Prince Henry. His clear, rounded tenor is passionate, but never strident. His duet with Watson in scene VI is beautifully balanced. In scene I, he projects Prince Henry's mood of black despair with remarkable conviction and drama. Jeffrey Black is a wooly voiced Lucifer. His thick, darkly hued voice serves him best when the devil is in disguise as a physician or a friar. In the Prologue, Black is not at all a commanding force. Fortunately, the excellent orchestra and chorus bring this scene to life with great effect. The concluding Latin hymn for organ and male chorus is magnificent.
As befits a premiere recording, Ronald Corp avoids interpretive liberties and conducts with great precision and care. Orchestral and choral execution are at a very high level. Only in the Medical School at Salerno scene does one wish for a more subjective approach. This dramatically inconsistent scene needs to be whipped up to a state of Verdi-like hysteria to succeed.
The cantata concludes with a powerful choral Epilogue that includes an harmonically adventurous fugue. The chorus is particularly impressive here. The cantata then concludes with the organ joining the large orchestral and choral forces on a note of high Victorian confidence.
Conclusion: A fine performance of a inexplicably neglected work of genius.
A must have for any Sullivan enthusiast.......2002-11-27
We have had to wait many, many years for this recording, but Hyperion has not disappointed. The performance is splendid and the music is as wonderful as one might have imagined. Sullivan is in the top of his serious form for this magnificent composition. If you want to hear how brilliant Sullivan could be without Gilbert, look no further.
Ah, the Victorian spirit...........2001-12-18
Hyperion has always been an adventurous company, so I was pleased to see them take a plunge into music of the Victorian era. Over the years, I've found some pleasant stuff from that neglected (and sometimes, reviled) period of English music. Unfortunately, this release is Victorian to the core--in the pejorative sense.
The other reviewer compares the tale to "The Damnation of Faust" of Berlioz, and that's a good comparison to explain what exactly is wrong with this piece. Where Berlioz whips up drama, Sullivan gives us a series of dull, accompanied recitatives at moderate tempos which eventually run into each other. Berlioz gives us characters; Sullivan, a few faceless actors mouthing endless piety. (In fact, the text is so silly in places that I had to read the notes to make sure I didn't hear wrong.) Berlioz provides us with memorable music, Sullivan with some beautiful orchestral textures that are pretty much devoid of interesting melodic content. Berlioz challenges the listener to understand the conflict; Sullivan realizes that his comfortable Victorian audience doesn't want to be challenged and obliges them.
One can sense the problems with this piece almost from the beginning. The opening segment has Lucifer rallying his troops to tear down the cross at Strasbourg Cathedral during a storm at night. His "troops" turn out to be a bunch of wussy sopranos and altos who sound like they couldn't take my 86-year-old grandmother. The storm amounts to a few chromatic runs and a bit of mumbling in the bass. Beethoven's storm in the 6th symphony is far more frightening and he was just depicting nature without the supposedly extraordinary element here. Even Lucifer is given music of little heft or strength. In fact, the staccato wind figures which reappear every time he appears sound like they ought to accompany a patter song!! After Lucifer and his minions slink away with their tails between their legs, we're treated to an echt-Victorian hymn full of sugary piety.
That amounts to 9 minutes of music, there 85 more to go and it doesn't get any better. It's hard to believe that this piece was once second in popularity to only the Messiah. (Although, once the "comfortable" Victorian era passed, it's not surprising that it dropped out of sight.) It's nice to get the opportunity to hear something by Sullivan other than the operettas, but if that's what you're looking for, I recommend the Mendelssohnian "Irish" Symphony which is available from several sources.
Part of the problem with this release may also be the performance. Neither the soloists nor the conductor dig into the music as if they believe it has merit. Instead, they perform it reverently which just heightens the smug, self-absorbed piety of the music. The chorus, singing in the stiff-upper lip tradition of English choruses, further adds to the tedium. Everything is certainly beautiful (aided by good sound), but it's so inert that if you put it on softly, I guarantee it'll cure your insomnia.
Normally, I'd give this one star, but I don't like to discourage record companies from exploring lesser-known repretoire. Besides, if nothing else, this release could serve as exhibit #1 of the pejorative definition of "Victorian."
A welcome release.......2001-12-08
One of the often repeated stories about Arthur Sullivan is that he was never satisfied with his reputation resting on his works with Gilbert and that he yearned to be known as the composer of "serious music." And yet the only non-"G&S" works by the latter that many would recognize are "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "The Lost Chord." Much of his non-vocal music is available on Marco Polo label, but his cantatas and oratorios have been under-recorded to say the very least. That is why the Hyperion release of the complete score to his "The Golden Legend" (CDA67280) will do much to set his spirit's mind at rest.
Based as it is on a very long poem by Longfellow, the libretto Sullivan set to music is little more than scenes from the original, much as Berlioz' "La Damnation de Faust" is just a relatively short string of episodes from the Goethe play. In fact, even the plots are similar. Here Prince Henry (Mark Wilde, tenor) is being stalked by Lucifer (Jeffrey Black, baritone) in many guises. Just as in the the plots of "Alceste" and "The Flying Dutchman," there is a young woman, Elsie (Janice Watson, soprano), who is willing to give up her life to save the Prince. They travel all the way to Salerno, where Henry admits he was only testing her and has no desire to lose her. Snatched from Lucifer at the last moment, she weds her Prince and they live happily ever after.
Obviously the value of this work does not rest with the plot. Nor does it with the vocal lines, which I found on this first hearing surprisingly uninspiring. They simply follow the patterns of normal English speech, while the chorus passages range from quite lovely to pedestrian. There is, by the way, surprisingly little chorus work compared with the pages of solos and duets. What made me love this piece, other than a feeling of loyalty to Sullivan, is the gorgeous music that accompanies all this through most of the score. Listen for yourself and let me know what you think.
Since this was composed in 1880, even as Sullivan was working on "Ruddigore," you might wonder if the opening chorus of demons in "Legend" and the ghost music in the second act of the G&S work influenced one another. I rather think that "The Golden Legend" as a whole influenced the serious nature of their next collaboration, "The Yeomen of the Guard."
The cast is uniformly fine, although you might want a little more of the demonic in Lucifer. Ronald Corp conducts the New London Orchestra and Chorus with the benefit of excellent sound. The back page of the booklet, which has the text for you to follow, acknowledges the "generous participation" of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society and the D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust.
Although the set holds two CDs, it is priced for only one with a running time of 94:47 minutes.

A wonderfully mythic and moving album by Llewellyn!.......2006-10-02
Livelier than his previous CD, "Ghosts," Llewellyn's "Celtic Legend" manages to capture all the mystery, danger, timelessness and heart of eight tales from Celtic lore in these intense, cinematic, richly orchestrated instrumentals. Don't look for reels, ballads and other traditional Celtic fare here; Llewellyn's distinctive compositional style instead blends the best of New Age-style atmosphere and elegance with the deeper, epic sweep characteristic of good movie soundtracks--not necessarily music to meditate to, but very evocative and always a good listen! The Celtic spirit is here even if traditional Celtic musical conventions are note. And this album has great flow--the music always moves along, evolving and developing in a multi-layered, multi-tracked swirl of sound, effortlessly transporting a listener to elsewhere and otherwhen. Very nice! Joining multi-instrumentalist Llewellyn are Juliana on vocalise (i.e. wordless "oohs and ahhs"), Tori Donovan on recorders and other instruments, Sandra Cross on violin and Medwin Goodall on acoustic guitar. There is another album out there with the title "Celtic Legend" by Bruce Huron. I bought it by mistake, thinking it to be this one. However, it was a happy mistake--it's every bit as good, a bit more traditionally Celtic in style, but with some similar qualities to Llewellyn's work, so give it a try too! And for more great music by Llewellyn, try "Mysts of Avalon," "Moonlore" and "Ghosts." For other cool, New Age interpretations of Celtic lore, try also "A Celtic Tale" and "A Celtic Romance" by Mychael and Jeff Danna, "Patrick," and "Music of Celtic Legends: The Bard and the Warrior" by Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning, and the work of Loreena McKennitt.
