Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great live rock CD.......2006-04-14

I love listening to this CD - the sound quality is great for all the live tracks except for the bonus tracks. On Widowmaker and Sex Drive, it sounds like someone sneaked in a tape recorder to the concert....the sound quality is *horrible* and the band can't stay in tune with each other. That's the only reason I'm giving the review four stars.

I can't say there is a bad song from Tracks 1-10...I love them all. The band plays really tight and they sound great! The sound quality is some of the finest I've ever heard. Hard to believe they sound so good while being so messed up, but they do play well on these tracks. My favorites are "Blind in Texas" and "9.5.-N.A.S.T.Y". Lawless' voice is great. My only nit-picky complaint is that you have this awesome, hard-rockin', ear-splitting power behind the guitars and bass, and then you have a wimpy snare drum that doesn't fit....sounds like someone tapping on a tin can.

I highly recommend this CD, at least for the first ten tracks. Rock -n- roll at its finest...

3 out of 5 stars O.K........2005-09-29

Sound quality is great for every song but, "Widowmaker" sounds like microphones and additional dubbing took the night off.

3 out of 5 stars The Ultimate WASP CD........2004-08-20

Blackie Lawless and his co-horts in WASP sprung out of the early eighties L.A. metal scene with the impact of a small hurricane. This was largely due to their over the top live shows and raunchy, explicit lyrics. In hindsight, what WASP offered was nothing new-mix in an Alice Cooper/KISS influenced stage show with some of metal's true big, dumb rock songs and you have WASP at its primal best.
That being said, WASP-Live...In The Raw is a pretty entertaning 'live' album, though those who actually attended the shows may dispute the album's 'live' credibilty, as many of the songs here were never actually performed at those shows. What we have is a very energetic sounding recording that was probably more than a little doctored in the studio. The best evidence for this is in the bonus tracks included in this release-Shoot From The Hip, Sex Drive and Widowmaker sound much more 'live' than the rest of the cd.
As for the actual songs, WASP penned quite a few memorable numbers in their career and the best of them are here-Inside The Electric Circus, Wild Child, Sleeping (In The Fire), The Manimal, I Wanna Be Somebody, Blind In Texas-these are all fine songs that stand up to repeated listenings. Curious, that their controversial debut single was not included-Animal(F**K like a Beast), this song is responsible more than any other for garnering the band attention and is actually a very cool tune. The CD also includes an awesome cover of Scream Until You Like It, an old chestnut redone by WASP for one of the Ghoulies horror film soundtracks.
The large majority of the remaining material suffers from truly inane and insipid lyrics and in some cases music that borders on tedium. Shoot From The Hip and Sex Drive will have to go down in history as two of the most misogynistic and idiotic songs of all time, 9.5. Nasty and Harder Faster aren't much better either. Also, the Sleeping In The Fire(acoustic) is anything but, featuring a very electric solo.
The digipack is nothing to write home about either, featuring some superficial and fluffy liner notes by a WASP 'expert' named Dom Lawson and the same photos initially featured in the 1987 vinyl and cassette release.
For those looking for WASP at their best, this is the only place to start. Ultimately, the only release by the band that stands the test of time in a eighties hair metal sort of way.

In their inimitable 1958 Wayne touring bus, stuffed with flea-market couches and a propane stove, Fred Eaglesmith and the Flying Squirrels have spent the last decade descending from Canada to play any venue that will have them. These two discs generously capture the fury and fun of their live gigs, despite the track fade-outs and the absence of Eaglesmith's hilarious between-song storytelling. The set includes the previously unrecorded (for good reason) novelty tunes "White Trash," "Big Hair," and "How's Ernie?" yet another car song "Benchseat Baby," but also "John Deere" and "Carmelita," rare gems that stand with the best of Eaglesmith's working-class portraits. He growls and snarls through every line, while his cohorts--including human salvage yard Washboard Hank, distortion-pedal-loving mandolinist Willie P. Bennett, and harmony vocalist and bassist Ralph Schipper (whose last show the set documents)--rock like punks on a mission. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars a good'un.......2002-05-21

Just what you probably think you don't need--yet another two-disc thematic song suite on an indie label. "Ralph's Last Show" (named for the bandmate whose green card has since expired) sounds like the worst sort of treacle in theory--songs about trains, old cars, old loves, even, so help me, one about an old dog. In reality these are beautifully observed, sometimes sweet, often hilarious songs written by a journeyman Canadian folkie whose voice has just the right amount of road- (if not world-)weariness in it. All that and an Appalachian murder ballad that sounds more authentic than anything Gillian Welch has come up with. Docked a notch only for spreading two 40 min. sets across two cds when both would've easily fit on one.

5 out of 5 stars Torn between 4 and 5 stars........2001-09-09

FOUR car songs, three train songs, a tractor song, and a bunch of awesome non-machinery songs too... I'd label it country/folk with an edge, with tons of fiddling in the background. Unless you hate that kind of music, what's not to like?

Well, it comes in a cardboard sleeve with no lyric sheets, and parts of it wouldn't play in my finicky old CD player, probably because the CDs got a little warped in transit because of the cheesy packaging. (The lyrics are pretty clear in the songs, so not having a lyric sheet isn't a crisis. The songs I could play on the old player were good enough to justify purchasing a new CD/DVD player the day after I got the CD, which plays both disks just fine.) "Flowers in the Dell" is a little creepy. And after a while the album's overall vocal and musical roughness got on my nerves, so I had to play something else for a bit.

Still, it's an amazing album, too good to knock down a whole star. But if 4.5 was an option, it'd be that.

5 out of 5 stars He's a pretty good guy.. with a great cd.......2001-08-30

I've seen quite a few live Fred shows, and this cd captures the band at its musical peak. Included are some very new songs, some standards, and some revived classics. The best news is that you can really hear Washboard Hank, who's been a major force in the live shows but sadly missing from the recordings. Pay close attention to Hank's excellent dobro work!
On the down side, the cd doesn't include the between-songs stories, quips, and banter that make a Fred Eaglesmith show a truly a wonderful experience.

5 out of 5 stars TOP TEN FOR YEAR 2001.......2001-06-19

This is cd is more acoustic than his last cd's, you'll have to go back to "Paradise Motel" for the same feeling. The cd is full of raw energy, and Eaglesmith as always is amazing. It's his best cd (from the ones I've heard) and one of the best cd's this year.

Amazing!

Just one problem, at close to 82 minutes it's too short for 2 cd's, it could have fit into one (- some applause and maybe one track less). It's yr money so you better know it before you order.

    4 out of 5 stars W.A.S.P s answer to "KISS alive".......2006-12-08

Well i've been a fan of W.A.S.P since 88 or 89 and still love the power theses guys produce in their music but i gave this cd 4 **** instead or five because like the first live album from kiss this album has obviously been screwed with especially the audience audio,it really sounds as if the audience was added later and looped over and over,it just doesn't sound real, and blackie's audio in some parts sound doctored in the studio.the bonus live tracks actually sound more believeable

......oh by the way,i had this cd 17 years ago before it was remastered and you'll know when you buy it that there's a gap between the tracks unlike the original unmastered version. The original just glides from one track to the other giving the effect of a continueous concert, also part of track 3 or 4 fades out of the left speaker quicky than to the right speaker than gradually back to the both speakers.A word to the wise,i thought remastered versions were suppose to enhance the original not make it worse,i even found the same was true when i bought madonna's remastered version of "true blue",remasters are not always better

After 1 Ep and 3 full length albums, WASP released their first live album. Recorded during the Inside the Electric Circus tour, Live in the Raw captures WASP in their prime. WASP play their best known songs with the exception of Animal F**k like a Beast, on this their first live album. 10 Classics like Blind in Texas, Love Machine, Wild Child, 95 Nasty, etc and 1 studio cut Scream Until YOu LIke for the film Ghoulies II. If you enjoyed WASP, The Last Command, and INside the Electric Circus, you will also enjoy Live in the Raw.

    4 out of 5 stars W.A.S.P. - 'Live ...In The Raw' + 4 bonus(Original Masters).......2005-03-07

I've ALWAYS loved W.A.S.P. right from the get-go when their debut lp hit store racks. In fact,I'm amazed their career has lasted THIS long.As big of fan I am of live albums,I might still prefer to hear W.A.S.P.'s first four CD's than 'Live...'.Not that this effort isn't worth having, you understand. As for a live CD,it's good, not great...but GOOD.The tunes are all here, like the awesome opener "Inside The Electric Circus",their Humble Pie cover "I Don't Need No Doctor","Love Machine",the sedate "Sleeping(In The Fire)",their anthem "I Wanna be Somebody","Blind In Texas" and several others, including four(4)added bonus live cuts.A fun time indeed to be had by all.Decent '80's heavy metal.Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars this is the original W.A.S.P. -snotty and belligerent!.......2005-01-20

this live album captures w.a.s.p. at their best. there was one song that i remember from when i was younger: harder faster. wild child and blind in texas from "the last command" are on here too and they are awesome live. i have to get more live w.a.s.p. on cd

5 out of 5 stars This is the Son of Animal....This is the Manimal!!!.......2004-12-04

Blackie Lawless, Chris Holmes, Johny Rod and Steve Riley rock this album from beginning to end. Blackie's unique voice sounds as good on stage as he does in the studio. This album closed the door on the 'classic' W.A.S.P. sound. Beginning with their next album "Headless Children' W.A.S.P. would leave behind the sex, drugs, and rock n roll mindlessness and begin writing music in a more serious direction. However this was a hell of a way to go.

The songs are mostly all classics, 'Wild Child', 'Blind in Texas', and 'I Wanna be Somebody' are all here at their primal best. We also get songs like 'Manimal' and 'Harder Faster'. These two songs are only heard on this album and no studio version of these songs exist, at least not to my knowledge. You also get the studio version of the Ghoulies II song 'Scream until you like it.'

I originally bought this album on vinyl when it was first released in the late 80's. I thought it was awesome then, but now with the bonus tracks and digitally remastered it's even better. This is W.A.S.P. the way they should be lewd, rude, and really really crude.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album from an Amazing Band.......2006-08-03

This album contains most of Death's best songs. The production value could have been a little better, however, the music and musicianship more than make up for it. If you're not familiar with Death, shame on you, they are one of the best bands ever, cetainly within the metal genre. If you're just getting into Death this is a good starting point, and it is a great addition to any Death, or metal, fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars posers stop reviewing.......2006-02-28

Obviously the ones giving this a bad review no nothing about Death or the genre. If your a Death fan or appreciate skill and want to see the one that paved the way for the rest of us check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Proves Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt They Were the REAL DEAL.......2006-02-18

These guys - even considering a few personnel changes - were at the top of the thrash-metal heap and have been credited with creating the subgenre "Death Metal." Personally, I do prefer the pristine studio recordings that capture all of the pounding, razor-sharp complexities in these songs, but the "raw" sound is still pretty freakin' great.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Live Album.......2006-02-14

First of all I would like to send out my condolences to Chuck's family and I would like to send a big RIP to Chuck, who died too young. Anyway this is a solid live album, it contains some of the bands best songs like "The Philosopher", "Pull The Plug", "Suicide Machine", "Together as One", "Symbolic", among others. There is A LOT of improvization here, some song lengths are increased by as much as 2 minutes. It is also missing some of the bands classic songs. Other than that this is a good live album and I suggest if you are a fan of Death metal you should get it. Once again RIP Chuck Schulinder.

5 out of 5 stars Ironically, not as raw as the title makes it sound .......2005-08-06

I listen to this album more than the other ones. Its just something about the flow and the variety that this paticular compilation of songs has an effect on me with. One of the greatest Death Metal bands of all time, Death went out with class, the Sound of Preserverance is influencing bands and musicians every day, and thousands of new bands playing a more technical kind of extreme metal are popping up.

They all have one man to think, the one man to have the vision to introduce the worlds of prog metal and death metal together, that is, Chuck Schulinder.

There seem to be primarily two types of Calypso currently available in the U.S. There's the huge back catalog of reissues by classic Calypso kings like Atilla the Hun, Roaring Lion, and Lord Kitchener, and an endless stream of cheap, meaningless, and vacuous party music spawned by labels in both the U.S. and Trinidad. But Trinidad Rio and Brigo straddle a small but important group of artists who use new sounds and new grooves to make Calypso that is still relevant, witty, politically sly, and thoroughly Caribbean. These two artists use a contemporary band--electronic keyboards, bass, electric guitar, and drums create a sound sometimes punctuated by horns--to make statements about life and music in Trinidad today. Sex (and sometimes sexism) dominates, both for its own sake and in the service of subtle political comments. But there is also topical broadside aplenty in songs about the foibles of the electric company, the local politicians and radio stations, and the complexities of modern living, all poured out with high sprits and humor in a live recording. Calypso survives, thrives, and defies mass marketing on Raw Kaiso. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Rio and Brigo at their best, captured live!.......2000-01-25

If you've been to Trinidad during the Carnival season and visited one of the Calypso Tents, then this is definitely a CD for you.

Rio delivers a diverse array of selections, some with subtle sexual innuendos, others with biting political commentary.

Brigo re-emphasizes his unique beauty with 'Mama Popo' and continues belting out his classics with his roaring, yet stylish demeanor till the very end.

The cd is MC'd by none other than the Revue's Dennis "Sprangalang" Hall and backed by the competent (quite at that) Frankie Francis. Michael Goodwin gives a very good introduction with included lyrics and liner notes (for dem who doh understan' d' Trini talk).

THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE TRINIS!

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal History In The Raw.......2007-03-12

Saxon - One of the most influential yet overlooked bands in the formation of heavy metal, was thankfully recorded during their "Strong Arm Of The Law" tour in 1981. This CD is a recording of a full Saxon show in Antwerpen, Belgium, October 1981, a week or two before the release of their double platinum album "Denim And Leather". This cd finds the boys from Barnsley, England right at the cusp of the breaking of heavy metal music into an international movement. Heavy metal was just about to break worldwide and Saxon was one of the bands leading the charge. Saxon was tight, powerful, full of confidence and yes...raw! Thankfully the tapes were rolling and recording, and based from the energetic Saxon's playing and the frenzied crowd response, it seems that a few Zig-Zags were also rolling :)
Now, as for the cd and show, if you are a Saxon fan, if you are a metal fan, if you are a MUSIC fan, you must have this recording! Saxon proves why they are one of the forefathers of metal music and why they RULED the metal kingdom in the early 1980s. From the opening "See The Light Shining" to the ending number "Wheels Of Steel", Saxon puts on a powerful peformance. Most of the songs on this show come from the classic "Strong Arm Of The Law" album, but they give the audience a preview "from the forthcoming album due out next week"; which turned out to be "Denim And Leather"; an outstanding version of "And The Bands Played On", a song documenting their performance the previous year at the first Donnington Festival. Saxon also plays a mind blowing rendition of the song "Frozen Rainbow" from their self titled first album, as well as a tremendous performance of "Hungry Years" from the "Strong Arm Of The Law" album. Actually, ALL of the renditions of the songs done at this show are staggeringly bursting with energy, especially Biff's vocals on "Strong Arm Of The Law"! Biff's growls and grunts during this performance makes this the definitive rendition of the song! Let me not forget the superb playing of guitarists Graham Oliver and Paul Quinn! Both axmen are in top form and are smoking, yeah baby! But the real backbone/spine of this show is the formidable rhythm section of bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill! The hypnotically, muscular, incessant playing of Dawson and Gill is flawless. Wow, I can't stress enough how fantastic this performance is. Unfortunately this is probably the last live recording of the original lineup, as Pete Gill left Saxon mere weeks after this show and two weeks before the start of Saxon's "Denim And Leather" tour.
The corporate walls trying to keep heavy metal music at bay were about to explode and topple; and Saxon was the band setting the charge! The Eagle Has Landed!

5 out of 5 stars Saxon just like you love em.......2003-01-12

      Sakamoto, Ryuichi

Ryuichi Sakamoto masterfully blends a luggage full of orchestrated poetic commentary and sound bits from the 20th century to create a trip of a lifetime. The skillful way he has constructed the methods to expose life's inter meanings and human existence is a huge task to say the least, however with ticket in hand this is one trip you won't forget! The intermingling of a variety of languages, express to the listener the urgency that we are all one planet. From the orchestrated cliffs to the lakeside poets brings a clashing of ideas that can only dissect and create a whirlpool of emotions that brings the listener to experience a total assault on the senses. The operatic and chamber vocals found though out weaves the catalyst to LIFE ....... Ahhhhh Sweet Life!

(Note) : I had gotten both performances and the differences are tonal, where by "Tokyo" was crisp and spacious in it's environment. "Osaka" was dense in sound and intimate.
