3 out of 5 stars okay.......2007-01-05

I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17

Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.

Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22

Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02

I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.

Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20

I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

3 out of 5 stars NEW MATERIAL FOR FANS.......2007-04-23

If you new to Savoy Brown, I would suggest you get some of their studio albums from the late 60s to middle 70s. At that time, they had a very good keyboard player with some very nice solos, and the material and production was much better than this disc, which sounds like it was recorded on home gear using a computer for mixing. It does list a studio, but that is hard to believe. This offering still sounds ok: has a raw dirty sound, although somewhat muffled. The keyboard is gone except for some crudely added piano. Many songs end abruptly. On one selection, a harmonica keeps on going after the band stops. But the good news is that there are 5 very good blues rock numbers, although they are simple and loose their interest after maybe 10 plays. These tunes are: headline news, going down to mobile, she's leaving, the blues keep me holding on, and when you got a good friend (Not the Carol King song). These are mostly John Lee Hooker, but with good solid rhythm. The lead singer on most songs is the bass player, a black dude, with a fairly good voice: Nathaniel Peterson. Leo Lyons of Ten Years After plays bass on 3 tracks. Kim sings on 3 tracks. There are 2 slow blues. I like, Bad Shape, with some very good blues feeling vocals by Nathaniel, and good guitar by Kim. (On the slow songs, I wish Kim would play less notes, with more melody.) That's all I want baby, is a rockabilly selection. Two jump tunes, but, I can live without the solo acoustic blues song. The CD's artwork is not in color, but has a picture depicting each selection. There is some nice guitar interplay between Kim and Duke Robillard on the last song, a jump blues. Finally, if you are more into straight blues, you will like this CD more than me. I do like the traditional approach, but prefer the blues rock style. I almost forgot; Kim spends most of his time on steel guitar slide backing--less solos--but the audio quality is not so hot. So, if you are a fan, here is new material.

    2 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT THE SAVOY BROWN I EXPECTED.......2005-01-28

In 1968 I moved to Berkeley from the LA area where I grew up. The music scene was fascinating; I remember listening to Savoy Brown's recordings in my tiny apartment near the University. I thought the vocals on A Step Further were edgy, creative and powerful. At the time I was also listening to a lot of John Mayall with Eric Clapton in addition to all of the San Francisco Bands (Quicksilver, It's a Beautiful Day, etc. etc.)Now, in 2004 I am re-living my late '60's era. My mistake was not researching the vocalist on previous Savoy Brown albums. What I thought I was getting was the incredible vocal stylings of Chris Youlden. Instead, Kim Simmonds lends his talents to this album, but they just don't move me at all. I hope others will realize this before purchasing this CD. It just doesn't hold up to other recordings by SB.

    4 out of 5 stars Hold On, I'm Comin'!!!.......2003-09-30

Released in 1999, The Blues Keep Me Holding On marks the beginning of the Savoy Brown renaissance, meaning that Kim would once again settle for no less than outstanding material, the best musicians, and excellent albums. Nathaniel Peterson's vocals and Tom Compton's tasteful drumming provide a fabulous blues backup to Kim's guitar virtuosity. He chases after "Little Red Rooster" with a cleaver, hacking it to pieces and then magically reassembling the reconstructed bird like a phoenix. (Much better than the acoustic band version on his 1986 effort, Slow Train.) Also, his National steel playing truly shines on "Going Down to Mobile" and he attacks the boogie of "Everybody Says They Want It" with renewed vigor. Petersen, SB's first black lead vocalist since Bryce Portius from the Shake Down days, brims with passion on "Bad Shape" and delivers the message with conviction during the political number "Headline News". Similarly inspired, Kim's own vocals are starting to gain confidence, as "When You've Got A Good Friend" and "Mississippi Steamboat" are sung with authentic fervor. Finally, numerous guest musicians contribute to the record's success, most notably SB (and Foghat) alumnus Roger Earle and Cajun guitar whiz Duke Roubillard on "That's All I Want Baby"; they play while Kim swaggers the vocals. In short, The Blues Keep Me Holding On heralds a renewed committment by Kim and Co to passion and excellence in music. If you love both blues and boogie, then get this album and hold on tight for the ride of your life.

    5 out of 5 stars fanfare.......2001-04-15

let me start out by saying this album/CD is essential to those of us who have seen Kim Simmonds live and know his capabilty.the first four cuts in my opinion are teasers and show versatality.then comes Bad Shape which just previews Kims guitar work,a few more versitile cuts and Kim cuts loose a little more with great finger work on Little Red Rooster that still doesn't show his full capabilities as those of us who have seen Savoy brown and know what Kim Simmonds is capable of.its a must have for those who have just discovered this group or are just into blues and music.simply a great rating for a great group who deserve every star.Blue Matter by the way is also up there among others that contain Savoy way back when,Raw Sienna[the album],chris youlden, lonesome Dave among other former Savoy Brown members.all in all its just great

5 out of 5 stars like the good old days.......2001-03-27

I can still remember when I saw savoy brown perform as backup for Led Zepplin along with Jethro Tull.both of which I went out and bought the next day along with Zeps first.the moment I heard kim simmonds do his riffs on guitar I knew thats what I wanted for my own group.the blazing instumentals really rock even though its supposed to be a blues band and dave[aka lonesome dave]is no longer with them.he was also a great guitarist who went on to form the now defunked Foghat.if your a blues or rock fan you'll want this album as kim only proves he gets better with age.hes second to none in a class by himself.stevie ray vaughn came close but kim outdoes himself on this one, shades of old.like mikey says "try it you'll like it"you can take that to the bank.I do not joke when it comes to music seriously!

Deyansa breaks onto the scene with a CD of inner strength and fortitude Deyansa was born Wayne Fearon in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica in 1973 and while he was always singing and writing songs it wasn’t till 12 years ago that he got serious and started to write down his lyrics and working out the songs on his acoustic guitar. Deyansa hooked up with fellow Jamaicans, Keith Senior and Jonathan Ford. The band toured with such reggae dignitaries as Culture, Meditations, Augustus Pablo, Cutty Ranks, and even Gregory Isaacs! Giving their able support on tours that took them throughout the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Keith Senior and Jonathan Ford had been session musicians for Coxsone Dodd, Lee “The Upsetter” Perry, and Ms. Pottinger performing on many hit songs. They also worked on such great projects as “The Black Ark Dub” and “The Upsetters” albums. Keith is a multi-talented musician who is very comfortable in the studio no matter what instrument you place in front of him, keyboards, bass and rhythm guitar, or drums. Jonathan is an accomplished bass player and was one of the original members of the Rhythm 1000 band. Rounding off the core of Riddim Zone is Ian Joseph, a drummer with a passion who hails from the tropical islands of Trinidad & Tobago. He joined the band two years ago after touring in Asia. Deyansa and Riddim Zone are here. Holding On To Life – SKCD025 Produced and Arranged by Silver Kamel 2005 ©

5 out of 5 stars Old school melody: old school sentiment; new school style........2006-05-07

A wonderfully strong old school type debut from rootsman Deyansa. Organic instrumentation including flute and harmonica on stellar, mainly, all original roots and lovers rhythms while the man proclaims in his melodic rough tenor: "now i'm free from oppression/ i rejoice in the light of redemption." even when Deyansa's down: "woman, you tripped me and i'm falling/ now i'm bruised up with all your love." he's still upbeat.
a modern, positive message album, reminiscent in tone and sentiment of some of Bunny Wailer and I Jahman Levi's stuff: of the scene but apart from it.
the best roots album of 2005? easily the best debut.

    5 out of 5 stars Cookin!.......2007-06-05

The first cut alone here is worth the price of the album--its what led me to buy it when I heard it on the radio--because unfortunately, I had never heard of Mr. Stephens before. But he plays just the kind of virtuoso, hard-swinging piano that I like to listen to again and again. I knew "Cookin" from Phineas Newborn's version of it, but I think Stephens' version is even better--those opening breaks are amazing. The rest of the songs are good, too, with some nice, complex counterpoint rhythm work on Epistrophy, and some laid back, Benny Green/Oscar Peterson type block chords on "Beans and Weenies." If you are a fan of straight-ahead, in-the-pocket jazz piano played with incredible, but not over the top technique, check this album out.

        Album Description

When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series.

Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event.

Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. This newly remastered Friday Music disc bring this fine concert to light for the first time in North America. Procol Harum fans rejoice!

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Odd But Compelling.......2005-04-25

This benefit concert, recorded September 28, 1996 in a big old stone church, features an odd combination of spirituals, madrigals, old Procol tunes and one Elvis impersonation. Backing Gary Brooker are a gospel choir, string quartet, and the Gary Brooker Ensemble, four musicians who are NOT introduced as the New Procol Harum.

Procol fans will surely enjoy the Procol tunes, but the unabashed religious nature of many of the other tunes may throw them off. The acoustics are grand and Gary sounds great, but one wonders exactly which market this release is aimed for. Hopefully the concert raised all the funds needed, because the program here -- part classical, part Christian, part rock & roll -- seems destined to find few devotees of all three.
