4 out of 5 stars Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07

I got to see them June 15th 2007 at the Saratoga Winery. They were a blast!!! You thought it was yesterday. They still got it, they still sound as good. They took "Momma Told Me Not To Come" and turned it into a Rap for fun, and the way they did it, you would have thought it had alwasy been sung that way.

I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.

After buying this, go check out "ToTo". They were the opening Band for Three Dog Night!!!

Amazon.com essential recording

Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." If by some chance you've not yet been introduced to Buffett's music, this album is the best way to say hello. --Daniel Durchholz

Whats too say about Jimmy Buffett...he's one of the best! Parrotheads will love this CD...

5 out of 5 stars If you only could have one Jimmy Buffet CD this is it!.......2007-06-11

All the best songs, a must have if you don't have any Jimmy yet. And a great addition to your existing Jimmy collection, and a great spare with all the great songs for the car CD, and what would Jimmy do? You guessed it! Go for it, you will not be disappointed because there is no bad Jimmy Buffet songs.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one that hooks you.......2007-03-24

I've been listening to Jimmy for quite a few years. A friend recommended I get this album, and after that, I had to have everything else. If you've read my reviews, you know I've been rough on Jimmy's incessant string of repetitive live albums. This is the good stuff- All the songs are pulled from Jimmy's (non-Barnaby) albums up to but not including Coconut Telegraph. It skips the album Havana Daydreamin' entirely. I agree with other reviewers that the song selection leaves out a plethora of great Buffett tunes, but you'll find them eventually. This is a sampling of the artist in his prime, and if you like it, it's safe to say you'll enjoy the larger body of his work. If you don't like it, none of his other work is going to do it for you. I always thought Jimmy would come through with a greatest hits vol.2, or at least a double cd encompassing his larger body of work. That's what "Meet Me in Margaritaville" was supposed to be, but that collection just isn't coherent and definitive as Songs You Know By Heart. After becoming a hard-core fan, I have to say that this collection is really going to be the pinnacle of his compilation albums. So, if you're interested in trying out the works of Jimmy Buffett, start here. I'll bet you won't be disappointed. This stuff is solid gold. Thank you for reading my review!(note to Jimmy- why not consider putting the title track to "havana daydreamin'" on this as a bonus track for future pressings of the cd? It's a heck of a song, and it's from the era. It would fit right in.)

5 out of 5 stars Parrotheads Unite!.......2007-01-13

Truly songs we all know by heart. Great music - hard to pick a song that doesn't go well with a Corona or Margarita, and hard to pick a song since that he's done that would push one of these off the CD. The song vividly captures the spirit of Margaritaville - we are turning into the people our parents warned us about, or so we would like to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect recipe for summer.......2006-10-07

Step one: buy this cd
Step two: buy new blender
Step three: buy lots of rum and fruit mixes
Step four: mix the rum and fruit
Step five: pour the mixture into a glass
Step six: put on the cd
Step seven: repeat steps three through six as often as needed

If you don't drink alcohol then you'll still enjoy this greatest hits collection. All the early hits are here and it's really all you need to know about the guy. But there is a lot more good stuff out there. Make sure you give it all a listen.

Bobby Darin was one of the most personally complex and unpredictable artists of the rock era. Indeed, it's hard to find another major artist who reinvented himself with the deceptive ease and overwhelming success chronicled on this 20-track highlight disc. After scoring three lively and considerable Top 10 successes in the space of a year in the late 1950s ("Splish Splash," "Queen of the Hop," "Dream Lover"), Darin traded in his teen idol sweater 'n' slacks for a tux and tie (evidence suggests he considered rock a passing fad!) and went gunning for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The immediate results were the Grammy-winning No. 1 legend "Mack the Knife" (adapted from Kurt Weill's "Moritat" in The Threepenny Opera) and the enduring, French-inspired Top 10 hit "Beyond the Sea." If Darin spent the early '60s alternately goosing standards from the American songbook ("Clementine," "Bill Bailey," "Lazy River," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," etc.) and mending a few rock-pop fences ("Multiplication," "Things"), he still had another surprise in store. His Top 10 take on Tim Hardin's dolorous "If I Were a Carpenter" cast him all too convincingly as conscientious '60s folkie. Other highlights here include his irresistible, swinging take on the lyrically bleak "Artificial Flowers" and his successful, self-penned nods to the '60s Nashville sound, "You're the Reason I'm Living" and "18 Yellow Roses." Darin was considerably more than the first postmodern lounge Revivalist, and herein lies the evidence. --Jerry McCulley

Alongside Sinatra, Ella, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and others, Bobby Darin is an absolute must in everyone's discotheque.

Good selection of his classic songs.Any age group can appreciate Bobby Darin's contribution of music

5 out of 5 stars He was the best of the best!.......2007-04-11

Every song on this CD will remind those of us who lived and loved the music of the 60's why it was so great and will forever remain so. Darin's voice and the artistry of his performance on each song is wonderfully smooth and easy to listen to. It is truly mood food ... whatever your mood might be.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-03-26

This is a compilation of Bobby Darin's hits and includes everything from "Beyond the Sea" to "Mack The Knife". A definite for any Darin fan.

1 out of 5 stars Too Many Mono Recordings.......2006-12-31

I don't understand the 5 star reviews. Of the 20 tracks on this CD (a good collection), only 5 were the stereo recordings; the remaining 15 were recorded in mono only!!! Bobby Darin's signature tracks of Splish Splash, Mack the Knife, and Beyond the Sea are all in mono format. Horrible, especially considering that the word "Stereo" is plastered across the cover of his "That's All" album where Mack the Knife and Beyond the Sea were recorded.

I suppose if you have one speaker, it would not make a difference, but PLEASE. I feel so very cheated.

A judiciously-selected two-CD compendium of Peter Gabriel's finest moments, Hit offers a far more generous windfall than can be found on the only previous Peter Gabriel best-of selection, the 1990 Shaking the Tree. The devil, after all, is in the detail, particularly on the second disc (self-deprecatingly entitled Miss), which really traverses the whole gamut of Peter Gabriel's globally-visioned artistry. It includes recent soundtrack work (the haunting "Cloudless" from Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence), material from 2002's sterling Up ("Signal To Noise", featuring a compelling vocal from the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and some ominous string arrangements, really does sound like a thinking man's Massive Attack) and goes right back to that fourth album when marrying the reticence of cold, synthesised new wave with insistent African percussion seemed like a good idea (it was). The first disc--including the MTV smash "Sledgehammer", anti-apartheid war cry "Biko", "Big Time" (interesting how the styles of Gabriel and his former group Genesis seem to converge at this time) and "Games Without Frontiers"--really speaks for itself, although with hindsight it seems the single-buying public-at-large had a particular taste for a certain kind of Peter Gabriel record. Universally excellent throughout, the collection is rendered even more desirable by the inclusion of three previously unreleased tracks: a live rendition of "Downside Up", a shorter version of "Blood of Eden" and "Burn You Up, Burn You Down", latterly included on a video game and initially earmarked for the Up album but jettisoned at the last minute. --Kevin Maidment

5 out of 5 stars PETER GABRIEL DARED TO BE DIFFERENT MUSICALLY, ON HIS TERMS AND LEFT HIS MARK IN ROCK HISTORY BECAUSE OF IT!.......2007-07-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary 2-CD greatest hits compilation album entitled "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" by one of Rock's all-time greatest legendary solo artists ever. I give you one of Britain's favorite sons, M-R. P-E-T-E-R G-A-B-R-I-E-L! "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" was originally released in 2003 on Compact Disc on the Geffen Records label which is distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Corporation. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

PETER GABRIEL will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for singing some of Rock's all-time greatest anthems as the frontman for the legendary band GENESIS. However, his stint with GENESIS would not last very long. GABRIEL would soon quit the band GENESIS favoring and venturing out on his own with a solo career that would definitely prove successful. As a successful solo artist, GABRIEL will also forever be remembered for composing and recording some of the 80's all-time greatest Rock anthems ever. With this in mind, GABRIEL would record many great hit songs and albums as a successful solo artist during the period from the 1977-2003 years. In my opinion, in 1986, GABRIEL would deliver to Rock n' Roll one of the 80's unforgettable all-time greatest anthems ever. I'm talking about the legendary Rocker "Sledgehammer" released in 1986. What ROBERT PALMER did in 1985 with his legendary 80's Rock anthem "Addicted To Love," PETER GABRIEL would do the exact same thing with "Sledgehammer" in 1986. Which now brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" chronicles and highlights all of the great hit songs that PETER GABRIEL composed and recorded during the 1977-2003 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. This is the tales in the life of MR. PETER GABRIEL, his music is his story that speaks for itself.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of PETER GABRIEL to speak for itself and back it up musically as he originally truly intended for it to be. DISC ONE of "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" begins with the soothing synthesized and acoustic turned mild Rocker "Solsbury Hill," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's anthem "Shock The Monkey," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's Rock anthem "Sledgehammer," the beautifully slow heavenly and uplifting synthesized number "Don't Give Up," the groundbreaking synthesized mild Rocker "Games Without Frontiers," the danceable synthesized mild Rocker "Big Time," the bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Burn You Up, Burn You Down," the incredible bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Growing Up," the amazing synthesized slow/medium Rocker "Digging In The Dirt," the beautifully slow and well arranged synthesized number "Blood Of Eden," the powerfully mild and synthesized slow masterpiece "More Than This," this is one of GABRIEL'S many great experimental songs that succeeded, "Biko," the breathtaking synthesized Rocker "Steam," the beautifully slow turned medium/fast and well arranged 80's Rock anthem, "Red Rain" and the beautifully slow number with the accompaniment of the piano, "Here Comes The Flood." END OF DISC ONE.

DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off with the incredibly sounding and synthesized slow song "San Jacinto," the fantastic synthesized, bass pounding Progressive Rocker "I Don't Remember," another great GABRIEL experimental song that was successful, "The Rhythm Of The Heat," the beautifully slow/medium smooth song "Loved To Be Loved," the slow synthesized number turned into a mild danceable Rocker "I Grieve," the incredibly sounding synthesized number "Family Snapshot," the slow synthesized "In Your Eyes," another beautiful slow song with the piano arrangement, "The Drop," the incredibly sounding synthesized Progressive rocker "The Tower That Ate People," the slow and smooth bass pounding and synthesized number "Lovetown," another beautifully slow song with the synthesizer and piano, "Father, Son," the name of this song is self explanatory and says it all, "Signal To Noise," the incredible live recording sung with Melanie Gabriel, "Downside Up" and the smooth synthesized and acoustic mild song "Cloudless." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that PETER GABRIEL'S voice was perfect and on fire while laying down the vocal tracks for all of these hit songs. In my opinion, listening to all of GABRIEL'S songs makes me wonder why he ever left GENESIS. GENESIS' music sounds very similar to GABRIEL'S. Even PHIL COLLINS' solo recordings sound like GENESIS and GABRIEL'S. Whatever the reason may be, all of their music sounds great.

In my opinion, this music collection or at least on DISC TWO, this type of music might not go well with the majority of the youth today, I MAY BE WRONG. There are great hit songs on this legendary album worthy of checking out. If you like GENESIS or PHIL COLLINS, you can definitely relate to and get into the sounds and music of PETER GABRIEL. I would like to recommend purchasing this 2-CD compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. In doing this, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal PETER GABRIEL music collection. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.

In closing, PETER GABRIEL has successfully continued in recording and releasing new albums along with touring and performing to sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. In my opinion, Rock n' Roll needs someone like PETER GABRIEL to come up with mindblowing sounds and music that is new, fresh and original to floor his fans and audiences with. What I admire about PETER GABRIEL is that he doesn't copy anyone else's music, his music has and always will be different and original. Knowing this, GABRIEL'S musical creativity formula has proven to be successful and I know for fact that PETER GABRIEL is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I also get the feeling that GABRIEL still feels that he truly needs to give and deliver more incredible creative music to the whole world. PETER GABRIEL has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be many new tales and stories in the GABRIEL legend and legacy that will still need to be written in pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you PETER. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. PETER GABRIEL RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

3 out of 5 stars perhaps a good into to Gabriel....?.......2007-04-14

Going back to Genesis in the early 70's I've been a big fan of Gabriel. If you've heard any of these tunes on the radio, or otherwise, you might want to start with this hit 2 CD offering. Can't comment on the bad engineering since I do not have this CD (no need since I have most all of Peter's previous offerings. Always great production and interesting textures, lyrics, arrangements in Gabriel's music. A few of my top album choices would be UP, SO, melted face, 1st album w/ salsbury hill. He's even better in concert...Amazing is the word.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Great Gifted Artists Of Our Times.......2007-03-24

You will probably never hear a more diverse and consistently brilliant Hits collection than this tour de force from Peter Gabriel. Most of his best known songs (not all, alas) are here: Biko, Don't give up, Steam, Solisbry Hill, Games without frontiers, Sledgehammer etc are all on Disc 1 which is subtitled: HIT. But it is Disc 2, subtitled MISS that is more rewarding as it showcases songs like Rhythm of the Heat, Family Snapshot, Cloudless, Downside Up, Father Son and San Jacinto. Two new tracks are BURN YOU UP BURN YOU DOWN (good funky stuff!) and CLOUDLESS (sublime reworking of the song SKY BLUE featuring vocals from the Blind Boys From Alabama)

There are always songs you would like to see on a Hits package and some that could be jettisoned and this album is no exception. I cannot understand why SHAKING THE TREE is not included. This is a song he co-wrote with Youssou N'Dour and there is a remastered version on his earlier hits album, also called Shaking The tree. It is a wonderful song in praise of Women with a gentle voal by Gabriel. Must be a legal reason or maybe a falling out with Youssou. One of his classic songs: IN YOUR EYES is buried on the MISS side and that is on the USA version. It is not even included on the European version. That is an amazing oversight. Also songs like LOVE TO BE LOVED from US is reather boring and does not belong here. He could have included from the same album, KISS THAT FROG, COME TALK TO ME or SECRET WORLD, especially the live version which way surpasses the studio version. Also SKY BLUE or an edited version of THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW from UP might have been a better selection than I GRIEVE. It would have been great to merge SKY BLUE and CLOUDLESS together for one magnificent closing track. The really weird THE TOWER THAT ATE PEOPLE, LOVETOWN and THE DROP could also have been left off so earlier PG material could have been presented. INTRUDER is not included and nothing from Peter Gabriel 2, although DIY is on the European version as is NO SELF CONTROL and I HAVE THE TOUCH. There are cut versions of some songs which actually help in the case of BLOOD OF EDEN, GROWING UP and MORE THAN THIS. Maybe STEAM could have been edited also as it is on the long side. Hopefully an anthology is on the way to encompass all relevant Peter Gabriel tracks.

3 out of 5 stars BAD Remaster.......2007-02-17

While I ordered this set primarily for the song selection (I only had "So") I was eagerly awaiting the newly remastered sound.

Friggin' HORRIBLE remaster job. I can compare sledgehammer from this set and from "So" side by side and this set's version sounds awful. The mastering guy cranked all of the mid-range and treble up way too high and ruined almost every song on here. There is a major peak from 2Khz-6Khz. I get a headache after about 10 minutes of listening. Extremely harsh sounding vs. the softer orignal recording.

What a dissappointment. This thing will sit on the shelf. I have had this bad experience with more than a few remasters. If you are any type of audiophile, skip this and try to find the originals. Bummer.

4 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-01-04

I am a Peter Gabriel fan, good music, If they put all the songs that were great on 1 cd or even 2 thier will be little money to be made.
I listen and enjoy this set.

3 out of 5 stars Hey not "98.6" but worth owning!.......2007-06-24

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

It is inexcusable that the powers that be behind the CD release of "One Hit Wonders" could take a 5 Star idea and turn it into ***.

The first and not as egregious as the second error is the total playing time. With a myriad of great tunes left off the release they could have given 12-14 tracks. To think a CD holds 80 minutes and not even half is full!

As two other fine reviews stated previously (M.Doane and Jonathan Schult) the legendary "One Tin Soldier (The Legend Of Billy Jack)" by Coven is not the version the listener is in tune with. It is both misleading and disgraceful.

This sort of thing was taken one step further frequently in Europe in the late 1960's and early 1970's by offering discount compilation of hits but the original recordings were not used. Hired studio musicians performed the tunes!

The majority of news here is good. "Reflections Of My Life - The Marmalade" is one of the finest and most intense lyrical compositions ever. You could make a case that as long as its contents are found here anything else is gravy.

"Come On Down To My Boat" - Every Mother's Son reminds us older folks of the great summers past. The first note takes you back to a simpler world. We didn't have the internet or even calculators but we did have some amazing rock and roll radio.

"98.6" - Keith may be the most underrated tune on the CD. Although simplistic in its arrangement, something sticks in the brain from the initial listening.

"Monster Mash" - Bobby Pickett is a staple of every Halloween. People were laughing then and still are now, but we are still enjoying the song.

Ten solid tracks and only a couple of gripes. Not bad.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

3 out of 5 stars Not Coven's original.......2007-02-24

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the version of "One Tin Soldier" by Coven on this CD is not their original. The original Coven version was on Warner Brothers and charted in 1971 to # 26 on the Hot 100. This CD's version was a re-record (although arranged and conducted by the same person, Mundell Lowe) and released on MGM Records, and charted almost two full years later, to # 79. Five months later, the Warner single re-charted to # 73. Further, the Coven version (both, actually) are better and more impassioned than the Original Caste version, which suffers from an overstatement of "mellow". The Warner's version of "One Tin Soldier" is available on volume 7 of Rhino's "Have A Nice Day: Super Hits of the 70s"

Great songs. if you like the old songs, you will like this CD

3 out of 5 stars HUGO is correct!.......2006-10-24

I have this CD and I had both The Original Caste's and Coven's versions of "One Tin Soldier" on 45 rpm record. Coven's version got the bulk of the airplay back in the day, but The Original Caste version is all I hear on local oldies (I live near the Canadian border) and on XM Radio's '70s station. All selections on this CD are the original versions. It gets only 3 stars from me for having only about 30 minutes of music.

4 out of 5 stars ORIGINAL CASTE's .......2006-08-06

For all the hoopla and erroneous credit the band "Coven" got in the early 70's for their much latter version, they did not release the 1st and original hit version of "ONE TIN SOLDIER". It was recorded and issued in 1969 by a Canadian group, THE ORIGINAL CASTE, and it was they who actually recorded the more definitive, superior and memorable version still played on Oldies radio stations to this day. This has caused much confusion with music fans of the song over the years. Coven recorded a "cover version" of the song which was used by Warner Brothers for their "BILLY JACK" movie at the time, as it made sense to use a band's version that was also signed to the label, therefore Coven recieved the lion's share exposure/promotion twice over for "ONE TIN SOLDIER", but their scaled down smaller band version is actually the weaker of the two. THE ORIGINAL CASTE version is more orchestrated and well balanced around Dixie's up front and centered impassioned vocal affair by far. The ORIGINAL CASTE was started as the "North Country Singers" in 1966. They changed their name to "The Original Caste" in 1969. It was a group of five people with the married couple of Bruce and Dixie Lee Innes at its core.
At first, they released two singles through DOT records, with little success. In 1969,they signed contract with the T.A. Records division of Bell Records. The single "ONE TIN SOLDIER"[composed by Lambert/Potter] and the album of same title were released. It has become a highly coveted collector's item.
They were produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who became the celebrated lead songwriters/producers at Dunhill Records as they churned out hit after charting hit with various recording artists in the late 60's and throughout the first half of the 70's decade. The ORIGINAL CASTE's group leader, Bruce composed several excellent and fully loaded pop songs found on their debut album.
Title song "One Tin Soldier"[Bell/TA-186] was more popular in U.S.A.(No.34/Billboard Chart; 1969)than their next single "Mr. Monday", yet, both hit #1 in their native Canada and Japan, respectively. Many cover versions of "One Tin Soldier" had been issued subsequently. Especially, Coven made this tune appear to the US charts four times and it was used for the Original Sound Track of the Warner's Movie named "Billy Jack". The music director of this movie's soundtrack wanted to use the original version by THE ORIGINAL CASTE, but the episode was that The Coven, signed band of The Warner Records, was in haste chosen because of the movie and record company's relationship.
Bruce, Dixie & The ORIGINAL CASTE's recording era/career continued in various forms as a group and solo[Dixie]recordings for about eight years[1968-74]and the final album "Back Home"[issued 1974] was left after their original member's group were dissolved in 1972. Dixie & Bruce continued to tour with various new members until 1980.
Dixie Lee lives in British Columbia, state of Canada. Bruce resides in Sun Valley, Idaho, and keeps his music career alive by playing his inspiring folk music in local concerts, issuing his independent label recordings and also tours with an all new line up of THE ORIGINAL CASTE, circa 2005. In 2000 he discovered singer Cheryl Morrell, which led to reforming The Original Caste along with long time Original Caste bandmate Gary Carlson.
A Japanese Import reissue Cd of the ORIGINAL CASTE's first album, "ONE TIN SOLDIER", is available at www.amazon.com - I hope this finally clears up all the confusion.

4 out of 5 stars Paul Davis ~ Sweet Life - His Greatest Hit Singles.......2007-06-02

Sweet Life, '65 Love Affair were simply outstanding songs, I give them 5+ stars. This man definitely had talent and put out some good music in the 80's. Overall, four stars for this collection!

5 out of 5 stars Cool Songs!.......2007-02-14

Hi...I bought this CD for my favorite song of all time...Cool Night. I've only heard this song once or twice on the radio in my lifetime...What a damn shame its one of the best songs ever & because Paul Davis is an outstanding singer who seems to have been forgotten (except for the few of us who really appreciate good music).

I also loved I go Crazy which I'm very familiar with & is my second most favorite song of his.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Davis; Sweet Life: This CD Is Fantastic!.......2006-10-26

Ya know......Some three years ago or so; I decided to start using the internet (namely Amazon) to find and purchase old music I had previously owned and I not only have been doing that but I have also been finding and purchasing some old music that I unfortunately missed the first time around and one of those artists is Paul Davis. What is so neat though is that it was like I had owned this CD all along because I remember every song. These songs are 70s and 80s memories at their very best. This guy is a class act. From the first track to his duet with Marie Osmond (which is the last track); this Disc is definitely Sweet. His covers of the Beach Boys classic, Darlin, (featuring Susan Collins) and, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, are excellent. The Friends Of Distinction version of, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, which charted some twelve to thirteen years earlier (around 69-70) is even better; but barely. What songs are my favorites on this CD?.....Ah Man.....That would have to go to, Cool Night, I Go Crazy, and Sweet Life. Thanks Amazon. I highly recommend this Disc. My opinion of it is.....Wow!.....Bom! Bom! Bom! Bom!.....LOL!
Final Note: Once you hear, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, you will know where the Bom! Bom! Bom! Bom! Comes from. .....LOL Again!.....Great Tune and this CD is a Winner.

3 out of 5 stars Paul Davis.......2006-08-24

I didn't realize so much of it was country. Get past his hits and it was minly C&W.

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2006-07-23

I myself like all the songs on this CD. I think they sound as ggod as they did on my vinyl records. Ride 'Em Cowboy brings back a lot of memories. Cool Nights is a very good mellow song that reminds me of a late June evening under the stars with the one you love. Love Or let Me Be Lonely and '65 Love Affair are my favotite songs of Paul Davis. Sweet Life also brings back a lot of good memories.
A very good CD for all music lovers.
If you do not like the music here then please do not waste your time writing bad things about Paul Davis and his music, PLEASE!!!

The Aggrolites are one of the world's hardest working bands and with serious talent to boot. While out on tour they knew when they arrived back in LA there was no time to relax, it would be straight into the studio for their second album with Hellcat Records. The title track from Reggae Hit L.A. says it all. It reflects two concepts the band formed while touring. One: The desire to represent who they are and where they come from. Los Angeles is in their blood--the culture, the weather, the complexities of the city of angels. Two: While touring the U.S., the Aggrolites were reminded that they love the fact that LA has a reggae scene: one they can dig every week of the year and that's worth talking about. It's not something you can find in the heartland.

Another track from this album that explains the Aggrolites position on things is "Work It." With its simple lyrics and traditional reggae M.O., the band found a platform to express their pride in being able to get the job done when it comes to entertaining a crowd and showing loyalty to their faithful fans. They have no problem saying to the world, you got to work it so you can get it and it ain't easy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Boot stompin to a new level.......2007-07-18

What the Eff? Ok, clarification...there are only two white dudes in this band! Jesse (chops) and Dixon (gee-tar). Rog (korg) and J Bonner (boom bass) are manic hispanics, and the drummer Kory Kingston is black-o-rican. So get it straight foos!

As far as the album goes...it's heavy. A lot more funk and soul which I like and it caters to Jesse Wagner's monster soulful vocals. A few instrumental tracks like Rhythm & Light are solid and just make you nod your head. "Free Time" is a single waiting in line to get on mainstream radio. It's addictive and it's got a story every man can relate to.

I love the album but I do miss the old "tube feel" the old records had in their production. But most people don't like that (or don't appreciate it). I also was hoping for a few more sing-a-long chorus lines that they are so famous for.

Overall this record is solid. Support the Aggrolites. They are spitting out some original tunes with some very talented musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Great summer album.......2007-07-14

I recently found out about the Aggrolites via Tim Armstrong's new release - they are his backing band sometimes. After picking up both cd's at my local store, I can't stop listening to the Aggrolites. The album is solid with all the songs decent, although nothing stands out as a monster hit single. But the depth of the album makes up for it. A great reggae sound steeped in rocksteady and Motown era flavor, it hearkens to soul music but still sounds new and fresh. And when the sun is shining, it can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars Will put a smile on your face.......2007-06-11

Another reviewer deemed this album as only "worth borrowing," and bagged on these boys for the color of their skin. I'll come out and say it; that's a load of crap. This album, like their previous, is full of energetic reggae that just begs for you to get up and sing along.

Nevermind the color of their skin. Yeah, they are white. But these guys are veterans to the modern day reggae/ska scene. Now, on to the album itself...

Self described as "Dirty Reggae," The Aggrolites definately know how to stir up some incredibly catchy sing-along tunes. This album has, for the most part, fantastic song after fantastic song. Highlights include "Faster Bullet," "Reconcile;" with it's gospel-esque lyrics, "Lets Pack Our Bags;" a perfect summertime reggae tune that lifts you up into somewhere else, and of course "Free Time." The latter song is the bands first single of this album, which you may or may not have heard on your local radio.

This is not to say that the rest of the songs are bad. All of the songs on this disc are great - It's just that some are a bit catchier than others. Point being, get this album. Click the order button, or go out to your local record store and buy it. Hell, download it off Itunes if you have given in to the new Ipod trend. This is a great album that deserves to be listened to fans of any type of music.

3 out of 5 stars Reggae from White Dudes.......2007-06-09

Sounds like the reggae parts of a sublime album. Perhaps a little more hardcore (reggae-wise) and with less hookage. Decent background music but will never beat a Lee Perry, King Tubby or Trojan Records Compilation in terms of authenticity and sheer ability to nod heads. Worth borrowing.

Album Description

With so many labels and so many CD's, you'd think it would be easy to find all the top hits from the fabulous 50's. Not so! To remedy this musical misfortune, Hit Parade Records inaugurates their new year-by-year CD series with Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956. This exciting, audiophile-quality disc is bulging with 24 classic pop, vocal group, folk, and early rock 'n' roll hits. All these platters made the Top 40 - sixteen hit the Top 10, three made it all the way to #1 - but just try and find these terrific songs today!

Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956 includes eight songs never available on CD till now, including Fess Parker's "Wringle Wrangle" (#12), Dorothy Collins' "My Boy - Flat Top" (#15), and the stereo single version of Morris Stoloff's #1 smash, "Moonglow & Theme from 'Picnic'." Others, like the Cheers' tragicomic "Black Denim Trousers" (featuring Bert Convey) or Tony Bennett's rapturous "Can You Find It In Your Heart " are very difficult - if not impossible - to find on CD these days.

Hit Parade Records is a new Canadian label dedicated to finding, restoring, and preserving lost treasures like these. Exclusively distributed in the United States by Eric Records, Hit Parade employs many of the same creative folks who lovingly compile those great Eric CD's - including Greg Adams, whose detailed liner notes with biographies of all the artists will fascinate you for almost as long as the full hour it will take you to listen to Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956! And, don't miss Hit Parade's other great collections, Fabulous Fifties Divas and Fabulous Fifties Crooners as well as The Complete Original Hits Of Georgia Gibbs.

I agree with previous reviewers, but would like to emphasise that most of these tracks are probably rare. So often oldies compilations mine the same vein, and the same songs reappear over and over again. The vast majority on this comp are new to me, and there is very little overlap with the contents of the Time Life Hit Parade series disk for the same year.

Once again Eric/Hit Parade records has produced another great CD. As always the sound quality is superb and the liner notes complete. As always there are lots of, as the title says, Hard to Find great songs from the fifties, in this case specifically 1956. While many of the songs are top tens there are a couple of lesser rated gems such as Wringle Wrangle by Fess (Davey Crockett) Parker and My Boy-Flat Top by Dorothy Collins. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Total Bliss!!.......2007-03-13

I didn't realize just how much I missed some of these tunes. My Boy Flat Top by Dorothy Collins and Wringle Wrangle by Fess Parker (TV's Davy Crockett) were both boyhood favorites. The sound is as fresh and clean as I've ever heard on 50 year old recordings. You also get Green Door by Jim Lowe and 21 others to help take you down memory lane. Thi CD is a must for those of us on the leading edge of the Baby Boomer generation.

5 out of 5 stars A veritable smorgasbord of hard to find mid-fifties pop favorites.......2007-01-25

Hats off to our friends at Canada's Hit Parade records. They have come up with real winner here!! "Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features two dozen of the most pleasing pop tunes from that era. And many of these songs are appearing on CD for the very first time! In all cases these are the original hit recordings you would remember from the radio. No disappointing re-recordings on this one! Even though I have been a collector for more than 40 years there were still 7 or 8 songs on this disc that I did not own!! For me, this collection was a real find.
"Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features hits by some of the premiere vocalists in American popular music. Enjoy once again Vic Damone's splendid recording of "On The Street Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady". That one always sends chills up and down my spine! One of the big hits of 1956 was Bing Crosby's duet with Grace Kelly. "True Love", featured in the motion picture "High Society", went all the way to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of that year. I was also extremely pleased to find a pair of hits by Tony Bennett that have been out-of-print and virtually impossible to find for decades. "Can You Find It In Your Heart" and "From The Candy Store On The Corner To The Chapel On The Hill" were both big sellers that year. If you enjoy that rockabilly sound then Chuck Miller's Top Ten smash "The House of Blue Lights" will certainly float your boat. And fans of group harmony will appreciate tunes like Somethin' Smith and the Redheads recording of "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" or the Highlights "City Of Angels". For me, perhaps the biggest surprise in this collection was the remarkable Jerry Lewis recording (yes, that Jerry Lewis)of Al Jolson's 1918 hit "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody". I cannot imagine that Lewis was much of a singer, but his voice proved to be perfect for that song. While I have always been aware that this tune hit the Top Ten back in '56 I had never heard the song before nor had I ever seen the 45 rpm record.
I could go on and on but suffice to say that if this is your kind of music then you should grab this one immediately. It has been my experience that collections like this tend to have a fairly short shelf life so if you procrastinate you may miss out. "Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features a very informative 12 page booklet featuring photos and biographical information on many of these artists. Simply stated, this disc is a joy to listen to. Very highly recommended!!!

4 out of 5 stars great melody.......2007-07-05

I thought that I would get tired of hearing the same song over and over but this cd keeps me listrning it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Canon in D is Great! .......2007-05-26

We have truely enjoyed Pachelbel's Greatest Hit. Although often associated with weddings this is wonderful to hear anytime. I would highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good thing x 8.......2006-10-28

If you'd told me that I could listen to eight consecutive versions of the same music, I would have been maybe just a tad skeptical. Yet, I just did exactly that and I am now a believer. I gave it four stars because although I do like Cleo Laine, I feel that her vocal version here is sort of like, "which one doesn't belong?" from this set, Galway's excellent flute accompaniment notwithstanding. If you find the Canon in D compelling, then by all means consider this CD.

5 out of 5 stars My very favorite music CD ever.......2006-05-02

My husband and I used to listen to this every night before sleep. After he passed away, it was years before I could listen to it without crying my eyes out. I know that the original has no lyrics, as one poster mentioned, but I absolutely love that one. "When will we ever touch again"... speaks to my very soul. I am here buying it again because I wore out the first copy. You can't go wrong with this CD...
