"The Dream of the Ancient Ones" was pianist/composer Craig Urquhart's second solo piano recording, and he accurately calls it "an epic." Somewhat "bigger" and more powerful than Urquhart's other recordings, "Ancient Ones" reveals another facet of his playing and composing styles. The nine tracks are grouped into three movements, each with an introductory Incantation, and two dreams. The work as a whole was designed as a musical and mythical approximation of a classic religious "triptych" painting, with two sides opening to the third. "The Ancient Ones" are the ancestors from long ago who brought knowledge to civilization over the centuries and have special spiritual powers. The three Incantations reflect the use of magical ceremonies used to summon this ancient knowledge. Overall, the music is dark and mysterious with strong classical influences. Urquhart is an exceptionally expressive pianist, giving his music a broad range of musical colors. While the three incantations are darker and more improvised, there are also quieter, gentler pieces such as the warm and serene "The Wonder of Miracles," which closes the epic on an optimistic and peaceful note. "The Dream of Flight" was composed for Urquhart's late employer, Leonard Bernstein (Urquhart was his personal assistant for the last five years of his life), as a birthday gift, and is also very tranquil, as is "The Dream of Mother Earth." I really enjoy all of the tracks on this album, but especially like the rhythm and energy of "Incantation II." "The Dream of the Ancient Ones" is a fascinating musical journey.

It's hard to imagine that a work like this could exist. It is part Chinese classical opera, part Aaron Copeland's American landscape, and not just a little bit like the best of Walt Disney's epic soundtracks. Zhang Ying was an acknowledged master flautist and composer in China. He now lives in Minneapolis. This set of seven independent works are his interpretations of the American landscape he has seen in his travels--the Badlands, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the Florida Everglades, and even the urban landscape of Las Vegas. The works are performed by an unusual orchestra, a chorus, keyboards, and recorded sounds, with Zhang Ying soloing on various ancient Chinese flutes on most tracks. The pieces run from the ethereal "Cooking Fires," performed on flutes and cooking utensils, to the strangely clichéd yet totally captivating "Seagulls over Niagara." Most graphic is "Gambler," with its cartoonish portrayal of the city of Las Vegas creating a vivid and perfect image of the city of neon through the eyes of a Chinese visitor. Throughout this work, the composer and performers exhibit that most essential gift, an ability to display serious and complex music with passion and not just a little humor. --Louis Gibson

Atsiaktonkie is better known as the leader of Native American folk-rock group December Wind. Here, along with fellow Mohawk singer Ratsista:akowa, he has created an excellent album of traditional Native American songs. The power present in these tracks is undeniable. The music is uplifting, spiritual, and fluid. If you like Ulali and other better-known Native artists, give this album a try; I for one am eagerly looking forward to this duo's next release!

Just saw these guys in Denver this is a hard to get ahold of cd and is good in your GD collection if you're a big fan of the band.....a brief look into what GD sounded like before their 1st domestic release....won't dissapoint fans of the band.....and shouldn't dissapoint fans of metal in particular....

A brief view of the black past of God Dethroned..........2001-03-25

This cd gives you a nice look into the band's past, with the songs from their original demo, previously unreleased songs, and of course, LIVE songs! The booklet contains pictures of all the members that joined/left during that time period, and there is a note from the lead singer Henri about the recording of their demo. And as an added extra, if you pop the cd into your computer, you can watch the music video for Necromagnon, the first *banned* music video. The hunt on Christ begins...

This cd was kinda a waste of time. All I really needed by God Dethroned was the Grand Grimoire. Even the new album, Ravenous, is still questionable. If you do not have the Grand Grimoire get that album before you get anything else from God Dethroned.
