5 out of 5 stars the classic line-up at their peak.......2007-07-31

Ace of Spades is the most famous Motorhead album for a good reason- it's nearly perfect. From the opening thrashing bass riff of the title track to the final notes of the closing song this is Motorhead in top form. There are other Motorhead albums that I think are as good as AOS, but it would be difficult to say any others are better. This is Fast Eddie, Philthy, and Lemmy in their prime, and the magic is obvious when listening to this CD. The blazing guitar solo in We Are The Road Crew, where Eddie literally falls over and the guitar feeds back in piercing noise, and then Eddie "recovers" and just picks up soloing again is one of the highlights of the entire Motorhead discography.

There is not a bad song on this album.

I highly recommend the "classic albums" DVD about the making of Ace of Spades as well, which is very interesting and entertaining.

Highlights: Ace of Spades, Shoot You in the Back, We Are the Road Crew, Jailbait, The Chase is Better Than the Catch, and bonus track Please Don't Touch.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but overrated.......2007-07-15

Every classic band has an overrated album. And this is Motorheads. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad by any means, but I tend to think of as a middle of the pack album. It's better than thir debut album, but I personally think that both Overkill and Bomber, their two previous albums are better. Maybe Ace Of Spades is so highly acclaimed because it has their "classic" hit, Ace Of Spades. It's a great song certainly, (although I'm pretty sick of hearing it by now) but the rest of the album doesn't quite add up as a whole to truly earn the title of "Motorheads greatest". The production is sometimes atrocious, and has some of the worst "stereo" effects I've heard. In fact in frequently sounds as if it was recorded in mono.

Production issues aside, there are some some songs that frankly just aren't all that strong. Live To Win, Fast And Loose, Fire , Fire and Bite The Bullet are all quite mediocre (although there are some good good guitar solos scattered throughout these songs. Love Me Like A Reptile, Shoot You In The Back and The Cahse Is Better Than The Catch are all good songs, but not quite what I would call classic. In fact apart from Ace Of Spades the only songs that I would consider worthy of classic status are (We Are) The Raod Crew with it's locomotive pace and inspired guitar freak out finale, and The Hammer, a song that although good on the album, really is in it's own element in No Sleep Til Hammersmnith.

I enjoy Ace Of Spades for sure, as it does have some of Motorheads best moments, and captures their early youthful aggression and enthusiasm as opposed to their later grizzled veteran craftmanship but I really don't consider the entire album to be their best. If you have a desire to explore Motorhead then I think it's an album that you should hear, but in my opinion Bomber is better than this, and most of their 1990s releases are easily as strong as Ace Of Spades. I'm a huge fan of the band, but I sometimes think that some rock fans miss out by only buying "Motorheads best", and skip the rest of their catalog, assuming that it's all downhill from there.

5 out of 5 stars If you only got one Motorhead CD, make it this one.......2007-06-07

This is the best quality Motorhead CD I have heard, and it is in my opinion better than the Overkill CD (supposed to be the best they did).

The Ace of Spades album rocks, and if you dont like this one, you will not likely like Moterhead. This album also is one of the series that Eddie Clark plays on. To me, he was the driving sound of Motorhead, and when they were a classic trio, he was the guitar player.

You cant go wrong with this one!

Sonic arcane layover. Memorable vanishing point. Who would be proud? How about John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Hank Williams Sr., Can, Michelangelo Antonioni, Donald Judd, Andreas Baader, Idi Amin, Erwin Rommel, Andrew Carnegie, John Cassavetes, Syd Barrett, Rod Laver, Charlotte Rampling, William Burroughs, Ronald Reagan, Albert Hoffman, Pol Pot, Terrence Mallick,Dan Gurney, John Muir, ETA, Mopar, Stonewall Jackson, Gilles Deleuze,Jacques Lacan, Jean Claude Killy, Mengistu Haile Mariam, António de Oliveira Salazar, Meriwether Lewis, Allen Dulles, Paul Bowles, Le Corbusier,William Mulholland,Girolamo Savonarola, Moshe Dayan, Hamilcar Barca,John Calvin, Jim Jones, Enzo Ferrari, Dennis Conner, Louis Pasteur, Carl Jung, William Handy, Junípero Serra, Mark Twain, Brigate Rosse, Alfredo Strössner, Charley Patton,Mark Hopkins, Mies van der Rohe, Aaron Burr, Clemens von Metternich, Roger Moore, John Fahey.

5 out of 5 stars Cult classic that should be as big as .......2007-01-22

Motorhead share many qualities with another tried and true rowdy bunch of rockers, AC/DC. Unlike their Aussie counterparts, Motorhead never had the U.S. breakthrough that catapulted AC/DC into the mega-legends they are. Perhaps it's because Motorhead is still as caustic, bombastic and offensive as ever, meaning their signature album, "Ace Of Spades" is just too abrasive for radio, along with everything else they've ever done.
This, of course, is an injustice. The classic line-up of Lemmy Kilmister, Fast Eddie Clarke and Phil Taylor created several albums of such intensity and power that even after the inception of outfits like Exodus, Metallica, Sepultura and other heavyweights, Motorhead still sound heavy, loud and rude. No passage of time has been able to corrode or modify their attack. For that alone, they belong in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame.
"Ace Of Spades" is the high point of Motorhead. Producer Vic Maile gave this album a sound that throws you back against the wall and pins you there until the CD is finally over. The best part is, you want to stay trapped. Far better musicians than they ever wanted you to know they are, this album is full of hooks within the barrage, and Clarke's bluesy riffs and leads add style and form to the music, which allows it to not just run over your head over and over, but to actually swing a little, "Fast And Loose" being a good example.
"Bite The Bullet" is punk fast, and funny, too. "Fire, Fire" is as hot as the title and "The Hammer" leaves you in no doubt that what Lemmy says he'll do, he'll do it. No tough guy in lipstick and drag whipped posing for this guy. The three extras aren't quite as up to par as the original album, with the band ahem, joining Girlschool for a three song set that rock, but are timid compared to the rest of "Ace Of Spades".
Strong proof that loving your music and believing in it shows, as this and many other Motorhead gems are easily available, thanks to their loyal followers. Unlike some reviews that claim Motorhead won't attract new listeners, I disagree. This outfit is better known than ever, and my own nephews a generation behind me have begun to get into rock's gnarliest outfit.

Album Description

Ace of Spades remains the ultimate Motorhead anthem, a brainstorming demonstration of power and aggression. And the album was no less ferocious, stripping the trio's hard rock down to its essentials. The three bonus tracks include their collaboration with Girlschool on Johnny Kidd's `Please Don't Touch'.

They're still going, of course, having earned a similar place in the affections of the British public to that of the Queen Mother. Ace of Spades is the reason for Motörhead's high standing. Or, to be precise, the title track of this album is the reason. "Ace of Spades," along with Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild," is the definitive heavy-metal biker anthem, and Lemmy's mid-song bellow of "And that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live forever" is declaration of intent that has rung down the ages. That Lemmy has since given every appearance of obstinate immortality does not detract from it in the slightest. --Andrew Mueller

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Album.......1999-01-06

With Ace of Spades, Motorhead gained limited notoriety in America and achieved what few American or British Metal acts have strived for - humor, excitement, and pure joy in the pursuit of debased desires. "Now, hold on *******," some of you are saying, but wait. Motorhead has always taken pride in their attitude, their integrity, and their music. I assure I affront none. It cannot be denied, however, that the lyrical content of "Ace" is practically subhuman - "Jailbait" speaks of statutory rape; "Shoot You in the Back" recalls the glory of Wild West lawlessness; "The Hammer" is an abstract depiction of brutal oppression; and the title track revels in heroic acceptance of the "death card." Despite this, however, I love this album and especially the words. Lemmy is on to something - people who work, sweat, and bleed for a living like to cut loose and just snap their heads up and down to disgusting songs once in awhile. And there's nothing wrong with that - in fact, we all have those thoughts, it is what makes us human - it's healthy and that's what this album's all about, man. Healthy, aggressive, raw energy and power dashed with a subtle sense of humility and humor and no apologies for being human.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Motorhead album?.......2005-07-25

Ace Of Spades (1980.) Motorhead's fourth album.

Motorhead formed in the middle of the seventies, shortly after Lemmy Kilmister was fired from Hawkwind following his being arrested. The new group he formed with "Fast" Eddie Clarke and "Philthy" Phil Taylor was almost instantaneously one of the ultimate hard rock/heavy metal groups around. Although the band's debut was a raw, punky-styled hard rock album, the subsequent follow-ups, Overkill and Bomber, saw the band find their sound practically overnight. What would result following these three albums was Ace Of Spades, the band's fourth album, released in 1980. In this year, the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) was in its prime. Would Motorhead's contribution to the genre be one of their better or weaker efforts? Are fans who call this album the best Motorhead album correct? Read on, and you shall see.

People who call this the ultimate Motorhead album aren't kidding. Essentially, everything the band did on the previous two albums comes together nicely here, and depicts the band in a prime they had never reached before and would never reach again. I don't know if I'd call this my personal favorite Motorhead album (with these guys it's so hard to pick a favorite 'cause they're all so good), but if nothing else, this one is tied for being the best with some others. Many Motorhead classic came from this album, the biggest and most obvious of which being the title track. This was the biggest hit of Motorhead's entire career, and is essentially their defining moment. Most people know and recognize the band for this song, and rightfully so. That's not the only big hit the album spawned, either. You've got plenty of other classics present here, including classic cuts like Love Me Like A Reptile, Shoot You In The Back, and The Chase Is Better Than The Catch. There are also a number of non-hits that give even the hits a run for their money in terms of overall musical quality. Lemmy serves up some of his finest vocals and bass riffs, Eddie plays the guitar with the best of 'em, and Phil's drumming is nothing short of excellent. In other words, the whole band is in their prime. If you only get one Motorhead album, Ace Of Spades is the obvious choice.

Motorhead's albums (most of them, anyway) were reissued and rereleased with remastered sound, expanded liner notes, and even rare bonus tracks! As far as bonus tracks go on the Ace Of Spades reissue, you get the awesome classic hard rock of Dirty Love, which was the B-Side to the Ace Of Spades single. I can't believe this song didn't make it onto the album! The other two bonus tracks are collaborations with Girlschool, an all-female NWOBHM band from the same era. These tracks are tough to come by, and it's great to finally have them readily available on CD in America. THIS is the way you're supposed to do remasters - other record companies could take a hint from this example (I'm looking at YOU, Mercury and Atlantic!)

Ace Of Spades is a classic metal masterpiece. 1980 is the year that saw the release of a number of five-star NWOBHM masterpieces, and truly, Ace Of Spades is among them. Lemmy Kilmister and the boys are all musical geniuses, and no album demonstrates that as well as this one does. If you only get one Motorhead album, this is the one you should buy, no questions asked. Highly recommended. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Ace of Spades.......2004-03-17

Possibly the greatest heavy metal album ever recorded. This album set the bar very high for all other bands. This album builds on the first three ( Motorhead, Overkill and Bomber). Lots of great catchy riffs, and some pretty cool lyrics as well. You can't say that Lemmy is the next Tolstoy, but his lyrics are plain and simple. This was my first Motorhead album and they became my band. The extra tracks are great for the compleatists out there who may not have picked them up the first time around on vinyl. It's nice that they kept the original ( from the pounding "Ace of Spades" right thru to "The Hammer") order of songs from the European release instead of the mixed up North American. It's a shame that this would be the next to last studio album for this lineup ( Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Philthy ) which in my opinion was the best, of the many different incarnations with Lemmy always leading the way. If you get any heavy metal album start with this you won't be disappointed!!!

Anybody who doesn't like this should be whipped & beaten with iron bars and bike chains. Over twenty years now and it ain't dated at all. I like ALL the tunes including the three bonus ones they added to the CD. My personal faves; "Dance" and "(We Are) The Road Crew". 'Limp Bizcut' and those phony 'Rage Against the Machine' posers NOT allowed... Lemmy rules, man...

4 out of 5 stars CLASSIC BEYOND AGES.......2001-07-17

Enough can't be said about this 1980 release by Motorhead. taking rock to the extreme, they defined a new style of aggressive metal. It's astonishing from track one ttil the end !!. Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Taylor work close to perfection. It's amazing, a clear evolution since their last effort, BOMBER.

5 out of 5 stars Motorhead releases their classic for the ages.......2006-02-03

Ace Of Spades (1980.) The fourth Motorhead studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
By 1980, Motorhead had been together rocking out for nearly half a decade. In the short time, they had recorded three albums - all of which were excellent. However, despite their growing reputation, the band still hadn't made that worldwide impact that would immortalize them in the hearts of headbangers everywhere. But, in 1980, that release finally came. When Ace Of Spades arrived, the world was taken by storm. It was the finest heavy metal record many a hard rock fan had ever heard! With the title track and a plethora of other, lesser hits, the album immortalized the band practically overnight. Read on, and see if the album is as good as everyone says!

OVERVIEW:
Motorhead released their fourth album, Ace Of Spades, on November 8, 1980. Vic Maile served as producer for the album sessions. The band consisted of the classic lineup of Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister on bass and vocals, "Fast" Eddie Clarke on vocals, and "Philthy Animal" Phil Taylor on drums. Album tracklist consists of Ace Of Spades, Love Me Like A Reptile, Shoot You In The Back, Live To Win, Fast And Loose, (We Are) The Road Crue, Fire Fire, Jailbait, Dance, Bite The Bullet., The Chase Is Better Than The Catch, and The Hammer.

REVIEW:
Whenever Motorhead comes up, this is the album that comes up. Plain and simple. Motorhead made their classic for the ages here, and it isn't hard to see why so many fans of the band, casual and die-hard alike, deem this the band's finest hour. It's tough to pick a favorite Motorhead album since all of them rule in their own way, but this is pure heavy metal excellence. From start to finish, the band rocks out the way heavy metal was meant to be heard. And, more importantly, the album deserves all of the credit it gets! Lets take a look at the tracks that comprise this classic album.

-SIDE A-

-Ace Of Spades: This song really requires no summary or comments from me. It's Motorhead's biggest hit, and the one song everyone knows by the band. It's also quite possibly their finest hour. With a hard and heavy fast-paced sound and memorable lyrics from start to finish, it is easy to see how this song gained its lofty reputation. THIS is the way to start an album! A classic for the ages, for all the right reasons.

-Love Me Like A Reptile: Here's another hard and heavy rocker done the Motorhead way. The song became a fairly big hit for the band, albeit not nearly as big as the classic title track. Still, the song rocks hard all the way through and never lets up. The band is in their prime all the way through, making for another memorable rocker you can't help but love.

-Shoot You In The Back: With the album's cover art, it's only natural they'd do a song with a western theme to it. Sure enough, they did. It's another hard and heavy rocker, done the vintage Motorhead way. Clarke's riffs in this song are amazing, as usual. The band rarely fails to please and this is no exception to that age-old rule.

-Live To Win: Fast and heavy are the two things Motorhead does best, and there are many showcases of this. Here we have another example of that rule. The whole band rocks hard once again - Kilmister's bass playing is particularly excellent here - it's a shame it usually gets overlooked in favor of his vocals! Another excellent song.

-Fast And Loose: Quite honestly, this song's title describes the song itself perfectly. The band does another fast-paced rocker, but they just kick back, rocking hard and having a good time. The end result is another classic Motorhead rocker. Once again, the band succeeds on all fronts.

-(We Are) The Road Crew: Here's one of those songs that became a minor hit for the group. It never gained any major fame, but it holds a special place in the heart of many a Motorhead fan. The lyrics, rather obviously, follow the exploits of a band's road crew. The song was likely a dedication to the group's roadies. Great song.

-SIDE B-

-Fire Fire: This is a catchy rocker, and there's no denying it. Despite its relatively unknown reputation, the song is an awesome, fast-paced rocker with plenty of catchy hooks - both vocal-wise and melody-wise. If the song had been released as a single, I'll bet it would have sold extremely well. It's another solid addition to the Motorhead catalogue.

-Jailbait: Many of the songs on this album became minor hits - songs that are Motorhead fan favorites, but relatively unknown to the mostly casual fans. This is one of those songs. Rocking out hard and fast is Motorhead's specialty, and they spare no expense and letting fans know it once again.

-Dance: Motorhead is one of the few bands that managed to create songs that were fast and heavy, but at the same time, extremely catchy. This is one of those songs. With catchy melodies and vocals alike, the whole band succeeds on every way once again, making another excellent composition.

-Bite The Bullet: It's a known fact that the harder and heavier a Motorhead song is, the more the fans love it. Sure enough, this is one of those songs that proves that point once more. Clarke's guitar playing is excellent as usual, not failing to please the listeners. There are many awesome tracks on here - this is one of the many.

-The Chase Is Better Than The Catch: The minor hits on this album were plentiful in number - this is one of the many. Kilmister's lyrics are always excellent and fun to listen to - both what he sings, and how he sings it. This time around, it's not much different. One of the many reasons many a Motorhead fan calls this album the band's finest hour.

-The Hammer: Closing out the album for the band is one of the hardest and heaviest compositions present. A band should always finish off an album with a song that will leave a lasting impression on the listener - and sure enough, they manage to do that here. Motorhead's most popular album ends with a bang - and sure enough, it's one the listener will remember.

OVERALL:
There you have it - Motorhead's classic for the ages. This is the album everyone remembers the classic heavy metal trio for, and it isn't hard at all to see why after giving the album a listen. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the trio or just a casual one, this album is an essential purchase. Don't hesitate to add this one to your collection. If you're a fan of heavy metal, you will not be disappointed with this album. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

EDITION NOTES:
Many of Motorhead's albums were recently remastered and reissued, with an entire second disc's worth of bonus material! These are now the definitive editions of the albums available on CD. If you plan on buying Motorhead's albums, make sure you get the versions with two CDs! Any fan is sure to get a kick out of the non-album bonus tracks, which include B-Sides, live tracks, and previously unreleased studio sessions/alternate takes etc. Definitely get these versions! You won't regret doing so.

This band has a unique style all its own. The songs relate to every aspect of life, stirs every human emotion.....from the compassionate patriot in us.....to the untamed, savageness love can sometimes unfold.....to the exhilaration of a lap around the race track with the champion #3.....to the unconditional love a parent feels for a child.
